THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2012

Cheers to the ECS staff and students who organized the Fun and Food Carnival to raise money for the St. Joseph’s Hospital foundation. It was FABULOUS!

Cheers to the few carriers who deliver the flyers on Thursday evening for those who like to shop the sales on Friday morning.

Freeze your broth in pre-measured cubes

Jeers to the guy in the weight room at the leisure centre last Thursday night who threatened and swore at a woman because she turned down the volume of his music. If someone wants to listen to their music that loudly they can invest in headphones. Jeers to the type and volume of music in the weight room. It should not be controlled by a small group but leisure services.

Cheers to the Paul Brandt concert. He put on a spectacular show.

Jeers to all the people that complain about the smoking people’s location. We are outside, what more do you want?

Cheers to the Archery Club and coaches for all the hard work they put in.

Jeers to the people who use the yield sign entering Highway 39 from Highway 18 as a merge instead of a yield, putting lives at risk. With traffic as thick as it is, rushing still gets you to Estevan within seconds of all the cars you were trying to get ahead of.

Send your Cheer or Jeer to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca

Jeers to the lady at the photo studio for being less then helpful and not taking my children’s passport photos.

I put a very thin sock (didn’t have any panty hose) on the end and tucked it into the hose. I secured it with a zip tie. I was able to suck up most of the BBs, and they went right back in the container.” -- E.L. in North Carolina • If you make your own broth, you can freeze cubes in easy-to-measure amounts by using your muffin tin. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2012

Music festival kicks off 48th year The Energy City will be bubbling with musicians for the rest of the month as another year of the Estevan and District Music Festival kicked off this week. Hundreds of individuals and groups will perform their polished pieces in locations all over the city for the 48th year of the festival, culminating in a highlights and awards night on April 3. Anita Kuntz, the president of the local festival for the past 10 years, said it is an important event in the community each year, simply due to the nature of music. “Music needs to be shared,” said Kuntz. She added that it is a skill that

is great to learn, but ultimately it is a medium we are supposed to share with one another. The festival gives music students from all over the area the opportunity to perform, and for some this is one of the only opportunities they have to show off their stuff. Kuntz stressed the importance of forcing students, in some cases, to participate in the music festival in order to perform in front of adjudicators and other people. Learning music is a great skill, but finding an opportunity to perform is a vital part of the process. “The thing about it is, my gosh, some day in

The Estevan and District Music Festival kicked off its three-week campaign on Monday at the Estevan Comprehensive School.

your life you’ll be put into a position where you have to get up and do something.” It’s the experience that these students receive now that they will be able to draw on when they need it later in life. Kuntz said that while the festival is the third biggest in the province, behind only Saskatoon and Regina, there is an atmosphere that is very open to newcomers and those who are a little shy about their performance. While it is a competition, the goal is as much about performing at one’s best than it is winning. “We try to keep it kid friendly, so they feel comfortable. The experience kids get, not only in front of people but also the constructive criticism, is second to none,” said Kuntz. With a three-week festival that sees close to 675 participants, there is always a need for committed and organized volunteers. Kuntz said they are in good shape this year and that “people have really stepped up to the plate.” The festival has received lots of volunteer support in the past and the two local recipients of the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association Volunteer Awards are Zella Reed and Sharon Stregger. Kuntz calls both women “long-term” volunteers, as Reed has been part of the festival for more than 25 years, while Stregger has been involved for more than 10, after first watching her granddaughters perform. The festival awards $10,000 in scholarships, with 50 in piano, 35 in vocal, 30 in band, 25 in speech arts and two for strings. “We do pride ourselves in making sure a maximum number of kids get something for their work,” she

said, noting the awards range from $15 to $500. “I can’t say enough about the generosity (of the awards sponsors).” There is a new memorial award this year, the Deb Lindquist Award for Music for Young Children. Lindquist introduced the Music for Young Children program to the community in 1987, a program that Kuntz herself is part of. Four adjudicators are here this year, with Troy Linsley and Dennis Weist overseeing the bands, Lore Ruschiensky doing piano and Margot Sim adjudicating the vocal and speech arts. The April 3 awards night will be held at the Estevan Comprehensive School beginning at 7 o’clock.

The People vs. Tobacco for $27 billion The class-action suit against “big tobacco” that went to a courtroom this week is a little over-exaggerated on the part of the complainants, and the focus on tobacco companies may be a little misplaced. Sure, it’s bad business to sell a product that may do harm, or will do harm, to the consumers who pay for it. Canada has been in that business for years, selling asbestos to poor countries long after we’ve learned of its damaging health effects. Our government, over the years, has continued to have a strange idea of what is and isn’t dangerous. There is also always responsibility on the part of the consumer to be aware and know what they are buying. I’d rather not side with big tobacco on this one, but those guys haven’t done a whole lot wrong, which is unfortunate because everything they’ve done should be considered wrong. These tobacco companies have really done little for us aside from creating all kinds of tax money, so it would be nice to see them dinged for the $27 billion that is up for grabs in this lawsuit. There is a lot of onus on the govern-

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers ment for the state of smoking in Canada. Let’s face it, if somebody were selling ham that was contaminated with listeria, which can make people sick and sometimes lead to death a lot like cigarettes, there would be measures taken to remove that product from shelves. We saw that just a few years ago, when cold cuts were found to be contaminated. The government stepped in and said, “No, this can’t be sold to people.” Then a Conservative minister, Gerry Ritz, made some horrible comments about how it was kind of funny that people got sick and died. I forgot about that part, but I hear he’s still in office. Regardless, the government stepped up and stopped a company from selling us a product that could be lethal, though those cold cuts were intended to be safe.

The government could have just put a warning on the meats with a picture of one of the sick people on it, but instead it made sure steps were taken so that the products were tracked down and removed from the shelf. It’s that time of year again when we are reminded not to have any Kinder Eggs in our pockets or vehicles when travelling to the United States because those chocolates with toys inside are illegal in that country. That is another example of the government stepping in and preventing a potentially life-threatening product from reaching consumers. Some people may say that all that is just creating a nanny state, and that Darwinism does a good enough job so that the government can stay out of the private market. It’s really too late to draft some legislation making cigarettes illegal. The amount of money it would take to enforce and prosecute cigarette smokers as though they were serious drug users just isn’t worth it, especially with all that lost revenue that the government wouldn’t be collecting on the sale of illegal cigarettes.

Farmers attempts at gambling for profits There was a recent story in the Western Producer which had me thinking back to a reoccurring theme in these columns over nearly a quarter-of-a-century, and that is the gambles farmers have taken over the years to try and find new outlets to profitability. The Western Producer story was about concerns from Llama Canada that their numbers have declined to 26 members from a high of 146 in 2006. There have been a lot of attempts by farmers over the year to “diversify” and while such efforts were applauded and generally supported by government, most have done little to change the face of farming. While cattle, hogs, and chicken have been mainstays of agriculture basically from day one of North American farming, they, of course, hold their place in farming for one very basic reason: the general European heritage of North America is to eat beef and pork. We like our steaks, and the adage about anything being better with bacon is something we generally accept as near fact. Beyond those three species of farm animals, consumers here have never really found others to be particularly

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist popular. While at certain times of the year like Thanksgiving and Christmas, we like to chew through a pile of turkey, the big birds aren’t exactly regular table fare for most of us. And while there have been ducks, geese, and sheep on farms from the time of the first turning of the soil, again they have never been regular fare. Even the horse, while important to farming as a power source before the development of the tractor, saw numbers decline after steam and gasoline power arrived, and we have never acquired a taste for horse meat. Over the last 25 years, farmers have rolled the dice on many alternative livestock enterprises, and none have caught on beyond localized niches. While there is nothing wrong with a farmer being successful on a localized

level, there was great hope surrounding the idea of bringing rabbit meat to the dinner plate. It never materialized in spite of rabbit meat having a low fat, high protein profile that would seem ideally suited to the health-conscious society we live in. There are at least pockets of rabbit interest left, including a significant producer at Saltcoats who has managed to carve out markets and maintain interest when most have given up. Others have carved out markets for wild boar and elk, and in the case of goats and bison, have even grown to have reasonable markets, although they are far from being meats that most homemakers have ever cooked in their kitchens. Farmers can raise anything, but there must ultimately be a market for the meat, or fibre from the animal. This brings us back to the plight of the llama. It never really caught on in terms of fibre or meat. Without a market, livestock such as ostrich and others have come and gone. How to get enough people eating something new to the point it is popular enough to support an industry is something which has proven elusive for all but pork, beef and chicken.

I’m not Taylor Swift so I can’t get my revenge through song I want to start off by saying that I used to have the nicest man in the world living in the apartment above mine. His name is Neil and he was polite and kind, always pushed my car out of the snow in the winter, and once came to class with me and earned me a solid 92 per cent on a class project. He was also prone to stopping me to chat in the hallway, no matter how many bags of groceries I was carrying at the time. In short, he was a beauty. And then he moved away, heading into some seniors’ facility because he was 88 years old and wanted a personal hot tub or something. Because I live in a popular area near the university, I knew Neil’s apartment wasn’t going to stay empty for very long. And I was briefly thrilled when a pair of university-age boys moved in. After all, they too would probably dig out my car after a storm if I asked nice enough, and if they sat out on their deck tanning in the summer months, it would probably be less awkward than when Neil did so in a Speedo. Of course, this beautiful friendship has not come to pass, and after several months of Call of Dutyrelated screaming, loud

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me parties Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (and I work weekends), and being woken up by their “other” nighttime activities, I’ve had enough. So it’s revenge time, and revenge is coming in the form of Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black. For example, last weekend I was awakened at 2:30 a.m. by my precious neighbours shouting and wrestling. Judging by the loud slurring, they were pretty drunk and I was too tired to either confront them or call the police, so I piled a couple of pillows on my head and willed myself back to sleep. And when I woke up at 8 a.m. to get ready for work, rather than making breakfast, I made a two-song playlist, featuring JB’s “Baby,” and Rebecca Black’s Friday. And I blared the playlist on repeat through my laptop speakers in my bedroom while I showered, and then switched to my roommate’s empty room while I fi nished getting ready

(because listening to those songs for any amount of time is murder). While finishing my hair and makeup, I could hear the late-night morons stirring in the rooms above me, no doubt enjoying the musical treat I knew for a fact they could hear. I wish I could say that, satisfied, I took the mature route and turned off the playlist when I left for work at 9:15, and that I politely addressed them later and that we’ve had no problem since. But that’s just not how I roll, and I definitely left my music blasting all day in my bedroom, making sure that no one in the room above mine would be able to get any sleep at all. And I haven’t felt a moment of guilt. And do you know what? They’ve been a lot quieter since. I like to think that I’ve conquered evil using evil, which is both

awesome and terrifying. In any case, it’s probably more that I’ve simply won this battle, and that there will be many more to follow. Obviously I have several equally-devious counter-attacks planned to be used in the future, if needed, like keeping them up on weeknights when I don’t have to work

the next day, or possibly making a Bieber/Black CD and playing it loudly on repeat in every room of my apartment (with roommate approval, of course). No matter what, I’ve been patient and nice for long enough. This is officially a war. While Tonaya Marr is perfectly capable of

getting revenge all on her own, she’s interested in hearing how you would solve this problem. Send her an e-mail at tonaya. marr@gmail.com, or tweet her @TonayaMarr. But if you’re all “anti-revenge” and “Tonaya, be the better person,” she’s probably not interested in hearing from you.

Students challenged to respect one another A group is coming to challenge the Grade 9 students at the Estevan Comprehensive School, all in the name of fairness, equality and respect. For three days, March 19 to 21, two members of the San Francisco group, Challenge Day, will be at ECS to lead full-day programming that is designed to open young people’s minds and show them that a world of love and respect is better than one of prejudice and fear. Moira Grayson, a teacher at ECS who also works for the school division, spoke to the Grade 9 students during a presentation March 6, introducing the program and what they will be doing during each of the one-day sessions. With Challenge Day coming to ECS, and more anti-bullying awareness coming at the start of April with Pink Shirt Day, there are things being done to confront the issue of bullying in Estevan. Grayson noted that they have considered bringing in the Challenge Day group for awhile now. “Over two years ago we had this committee going, and we were talking about ways to improve the quality of life for kids in Estevan, and the idea of Challenge Day came up,” said Grayson. “I think I mentioned it because I’d heard about it years earlier. The kids immediately jumped on it; the one girl especially said, ‘Yeah, I’ve been through it and it’s fantastic.’ She said it changed her life in positive ways and it was a really, really good experience. Most of what they do is create interaction. That’s the primary thing.” If it’s considered a success this year, the school may decide to continue hosting Challenge Day each year by initiating the Grade 9 class through this program. “We’re doing it for Grade 9. We’re hoping that if this is a positive experience for everybody and then we would do it again next year for the Grade 9s, so each year for several years the Grade 9s would go through it. Hopefully that will help with some of the

Grade 9 students at the Estevan Comprehensive School learned about Challenge Day last week. The students who sat in on the presentation heard from teachers and students that the program is intended to create help bolster an atmosphere of among the student body. negative stuff that’s going on,” said Grayson. “We’re all in one room and we’re all in there together for the whole day.” The event will be held each day in the drama room. There will be about 90 students and 25 adults participating each day. The adults will be teachers and administrators at the school as well as police and other

community members. “The community’s really been enthusiastically supportive.” It isn’t inexpensive to bring in the group, which has appeared on shows like Oprah. The United Way of Estevan donated $10,500, and the school has received sponsorship from other local organizations and companies, both

financially as well providing things such as food for all the participants. Bullying is a concern for many right now, not just in Estevan but in schools everywhere. “I really wanted to see us trying to do something to change some of the things that are going on around here,” said Grayson. ECS principal Mike

Little said, “We have surveyed the kids in the past, and one of the things that comes up is peer pressure and cyberbullying, and we wanted to address that the best way possible.” “We talked about it awhile longer and then just decided to see what we could do,” added Grayson. So they started to look for fundraising because of

the high cost of bringing in the program and found that the rest of the community was happy to put their support behind something that could be so beneficial to Estevan’s youth. “Once we knew that we were going to have the money in place, we contacted Challenge Day and got things rolling,” added Grayson. The idea had to be run by the school’s administration, and she said that Little was very eager to bring in Challenge Day to see how the students responded. “(It was) just an absolutely immediate ‘yes, let’s do that.’ (The administration) very, very supportive.” “I hope my school can go forward with this and try to move forward in a positive manner, recognizing all forms of bullying,” said Little. “I hope to improve the school’s climate, and anything we can do to (move forward) is good.” Little said having a professional organization come in and tackle the issues with them is something he’s is looking forward to being a part of. He will be one of the adults involved during one of the days, and the school’s two vice-principals will be present for the other two days. Grayson also encouraged and wished to remind students to get their forms signed and handed in so they would be able to participate. 12032JJ00

Are heat rays a better way to disperse crowds?

HeHe SheShe

The United States military went public with their new heat ray this week. This device fires an invisible ray of hot pain at unsuspecting people with the idea that it will be used to get crowds of angry people to run away and calm down. With the warm spring weather on its way, expect the heat ray to be used at this year’s Occupy Wall Street protests. It’s great for cameras, because while last year media and onlookers captured video and images of police and crowd control authorities exercising their muscle a little heavy handedly with the pepper spray, the heat ray is not seen or heard. Now authorities can go crazy with the heat ray, blasting people with a highlyfocused oven. All we’ll see is a bunch of people running away and maybe screaming a little. The transparency of the heat ray does nothing to add to the transparency of policing forces. I don’t like to be the guy who sides with the mobs that in many circumstances can be out of control, like Vancouver when one of its sports teams inevitably loses the big game, but there is a problem with crowd control measures that can’t be measured by the public. There are situations when police and military need to use some degree of force to control mindless hordes of rioting people, but those actions are still open to public criticism. It’s hard for the public to determine for themselves if a person in authority is abusing their power through force if what they are doing is invisible. This heat ray is like the wind; you can’t see it, you can only see it’s effect. They say the heat ray is safe, and it doesn’t heat you up from the inside like a microwave. Imagine the heat ray were visible though, and it was firing a red laser, like an alien from a movie, at a group of running people. I don’t know what would look more comically evil than that.

Said

I think the answer to this is pretty obvious: yes, a heat ray is awesome at controlling crowds. They were developed by the military and they blast people with heat to a point where they have no choice whether or not to flee. Their genetic desire to stay alive makes them need to run away. So that’s pretty awesome when it comes to keeping unwanted crowds from assembling. But if the question was “are heat rays a humane way to control riotous crowds?” then I’d say the answer is probably no. Blasting people with heat from a weapon that the military decided wasn’t appropriate to use on civilians doesn’t strike me as a great idea. From what I’ve seen online, the heat ray is intended to be used on riotous prison crowds. And while I still maintain that this is a pretty special and brutal form of crowd control, blasting prisoners trying to escape seems all right. Not to say that they aren’t people too, but they’re people who have murdered, raped and stolen (etc.) and if my choice is between a pile of prisoners escaping and ray-gunnnig them, then I’m going to choose the latter. But heat blasting crowds of people? Not cool. After watching so many videos of police abusing their power and shooting Occupy protesters in the face with pepper spray, I really am not keen in handing them yet another weapon to use at their discretion. Whether or not their intentions are noble, the power to control any crowd will probably prove too great for power-hungry cops looking to keep teenage protesters off their lawns. What if there are babies in the crowd? Young children? Elderly? What if there are innocent bystanders in the wrong place at the wrong time? At least firing rubber bullets or spraying mace is well controlled and fairly easily directed. So I vote no to heat rays for crowd control. If the military doesn’t think it’s cool to use the ray on enemies, then it has no place being used on civilians.

Will Viterra’s sale affect the iPad farmer? It didn’t take long for the Canadian Wheat Board shakeup to have a ripple effect. Late last week, Viterra, formerly the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, made it known that there are suitors out there looking to buy the Reginabased grain giant. At least, we might think it is a giant, having absorbed what was once the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Alberta Wheat Pool, Manitoba Pool Elevators, and United Grain Growers. This includes the intermediate companies known as Agricore and Agricore United.

But on the world stage, what’s $5 billion or so? Not much, it would seem, and so there are several companies that may be in the bidding. Even though as of the time of writing we don’t know who it is yet, the announcement that they even exist makes a sale seem like a foregone conclusion. Viterra will be sold, and to foreign interests. There are generations of Wheat Pool members turning over in their graves as we speak. With the province already saying it’s not going to bat for the Wheat Pool, sorry,

In step 3, mix 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, and 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne) with salt, pepper, and oil in bowl. Add potatoes and toss to coat. Complete recipe as in step 4.

Serve this popular choice with your favorite beef or steak dish. 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 medium (about 8 ounces each) baking potatoes 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper 1. Preheat oven to 425 F. Brush 2 large cookie sheets with 1 tablespoon oil. 2. Cut each unpeeled potato lengthwise into quarters, then cut each quarter lengthwise into 2 wedges (or, cut potatoes crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices). 3. In a large bowl, toss potatoes with salt, pepper and remaining 1 tablespoon oil until evenly coated. 4. Divide potatoes between cookie sheets, spreading each batch into an even layer. Place cookie sheets on 2 oven racks and oven-fry potatoes 25 minutes or until tender and crisp, turning potatoes over once and switching pans between upper and lower racks halfway through cooking. Lemony Oven Fries: Prepare Classic Oven Fries as above in steps 1 and 2. In step 3, mix 1 teaspoon grated fresh lemon peel, 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 1 tablespoon dried oregano, and 1 large garlic clove, crushed

Can anyone say Inco? How about our steel industry, which, once strong, is now almost completely foreign owned, and in tatters in Central Canada. Viterra is the largest Canadian company in the agriculture sector. Its headquarters are at the corner of Albert and Victoria, the very centre of our capital. I imagine it will soon be a branch office, although Boyd Erman of the Globe and Mail feels it already is. He wrote on March 12, “Viterra, like Potash Corp., has spirited many of its head office jobs out of the province while keeping a headquarters there in name only. Yet it remains tied deeply into the province’s fabric and history. The company’s roots are in the farmer-owned Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. In scores

there’s a downturn, the plant gets shuttered. Could this happen to Viterra? Not likely, at least not in a Stelco sense. Its geographically distributed network of terminals makes it hard to cut much more than what was already done when the industry converted from wooden elevators to concrete terminals. But if the purchaser is Cargill, for instance, surely there will be consolidation. And how will all this affect the farmers? They are no longer the quarter-section per family Wheat Pool members, but instead have thousands of acres and $300,000+ combines and tractors with which to operate. They can market their grain on their 3G-enabled iPad while in the seat of the aforementioned tractor that is steering itself. These farmers are in better shape to deal with big, foreign grain companies than their ancestors. To them, it will likely make little difference in the long run. of small towns, including the one I grew up in, the grain elevators of Viterra and its rivals offer the only hint of a skyline.” Fighting the dominance of big grain companies was the very raison d’etre of the Wheat Pool. Now, if it is sold wholesale to foreign interests, the Pool’s journey to the Dark Side will be complete. We’ve got China and South Korea buying up oil and oilsands assets, the steel sector already gone, manufacturing in the tank, and a good chunk of our minerals in the hands of foreign companies. Research in Motion, our technological champion, is taking a beating from Apple and the Android, and is considered a takeover target. Foreign investment is great, except for when it isn’t. At some point here, Canadians will realize a large number of us are going to mostly be working for someone else, and that someone else doesn’t necessarily have our best interests in mind. Historic lawsuit with tobacco companies begins from her car into the bin two weeks ago when she heard a rustling sound and spotted a bag moving around. Outside Montreal’s Trudeau airport, dozens of members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers blew whistles and plastic horns Monday to protest the government’s decision to prevent them from going on strike. A similar protest was held at Toronto’s Pearson airport later in the day, the union said. International LONDON - British police arrested six people Tuesday as part of the investigation into phone hacking in the British media. The Metropolitan police said five men and one woman were arrested in various locations in and around greater London. It said their premises were being searched. Police said the arrests took place between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday. All six were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, the force said in a statement. The arrests are part of a probe into phone hacking by journalists and private investigators working for British tabloids, notably Rupert Murdoch’s the News of the World, which closed in July after a string of misdeeds was exposed. Police said a 43-yearold woman was arrested at her home in Oxfordshire

and is being questioned by police there. *** GUATEMALA CITY - A former member of an elite Guatemalan military force extradited from the United States last July was sentenced to 6,060 years in prison Monday for his role in the killings of 201 people in a 1982 massacre. Pedro Pimentel Rios was the fifth former special forces soldier sentenced to 6,060 years or more for what became known as the “Dos Erres” massacre after the northern Guatemala hamlet where the killings occurred during the country’s 19601996 civil war. The sentence was handed down by a three-judge panel is largely symbolic since under Guatemalan law the maximum time a convict can serve is 50 years. It specified 30 years for each of the 201 deaths, plus 30 years for crimes against humanity. *** ROME - Since the start of the month it has been illegal to die in Falciano del Massico, a village of 3,700 people some 50 kilometres from Naples in southern Italy. Mayor Giulio Cesare Fava issued the tongue-incheek decree because the village has no cemetery and it is feuding with a nearby town that has one — creating a logistical problem about what to do with the deceased. The mayor told newspapers that villagers are content. “The ordinance has brought happiness,” he was quoted Tuesday as saying. “Unfortunately, two elderly citizens disobeyed.”

The landmark classaction case, with up to $27 billion at stake, kicked off in a Montreal courtroom where Canada’s three biggest cigarette companies began their battle against a group representing all of Quebec’s 1.8 million smokers. It is considered the biggest class-action case in Canadian history. It is also the first time tobacco companies have gone to trial in a civil suit in Canada. Two lawsuits are being heard together and they involve separate groups of Quebec plaintiffs — some who have gotten seriously ill from smoking, and others who say they can’t quit. *** LONGUEUIL, Que. Rangers and Blues no laughing matter anymore Legal bookmakers in Nevada will take bets on just about anything connected with sports. If you want to put down a fiver that says the national anthem singer will finish singing in less than a minute and 30 seconds at a college basketball game in Tulsa next Thursday, somebody on Las Vegas Boulevard would likely quote you odds without a snicker. But you probably would have got a smirk or maybe even an outright giggle or a belly laugh had you wagered money last October that the best two teams going into the National Hockey League playoffs in April would be the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. But that’s what a team commitment to defence, and great goaltending, will do. The Rangers were the better of those two teams last year, barely sneaking into the playoffs after finishing eighth. They were quickly dismissed four games to one by Washington in the first round of playoffs. The Blues were worse; they finished a dismal 11th in the Western Conference, missing a playoff spot by 10 points. Fast forward 11 months:

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist The Blues, under coach Ken Hitchcock, who took over from Davis Payne after 13 games (6-7 record), were ... huge surprise ... the No. 1 team in the West! The Rangers, riding the hot goaltending of Henrik Lundqvist and the determined coaching of John Tortorella, who won a cup in 2004 with Tampa Bay, have been the class of the East all season. The perceived powers in the NHL - Stanley Cup finalists Boston and Vancouver, and perennial contenders Detroit and Pittsburgh - have had strong seasons, but the underdog Rangers and Blues have been even more sublime. New York is likely to finish the season with only three 20-goal scorers (Marian Gaborik, Ryan Callahan and Brad Richards) but are riding Lundqvist and his mid-1.80s goals-against average, eight shutouts and save percentage close to .940 to win after win. Same story with the Blues, who are the only team in NHL history to have two goaltenders post at least six

shutouts each in one season. When they award the Vezina Trophy this June, don’t be surprised if it’s shared by the Blues Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott. The playoffs are still about a month away, but suggesting a Rangers-Blues Stanley Cup final is no longer accompanied by roars of laughter. • Comedy writer Alan Ray, not surprised that Massachusetts authorities broke up a canary-fighting ring: “Usually, investigators can get one or two of the participants to sing.” • Angels manager Mike Scioscia showed up to spring training 38 pounds lighter - and with a goal to lose another 20. “I was born 10 pounds, 12 ounces,” he explained to the L.A. Times, “and I’ve been trying to lose weight ever since.” • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “Forty-nine-yearold pitcher Jamie Moyer is trying to make a Major League comeback. Apparently he has good speed and location with the peanuts. They just need to show him how to make correct change.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@ yahoo.ca

Mustangs tie series at one in Big Six final The Bienfait Coalers have a chance to bring home two banners this spring. The Coalers have reached both the provincial Senior A final and the Big Six Hockey League final. Bienfait edged the Oxbow Huskies 3-2 in Game 5 of their league semifinal last Tuesday to take the series by the thinnest of margins. That set up a rematch of last year’s Big Six final against the Midale Mustangs. The Coalers (17-2-1) took Game 1 of the championship series on Sunday with a 7-3 victory on home ice. The fourth-place Mustangs (11-8-1) rallied at home on Wednesday night for a 6-3 win to tie the series at one game apiece. Game 3 was last night in Bienfait, followed by the fourth game Sunday in Midale at 7 p.m. Game 5, if necessary, is Tuesday in Bienfait at 8 p.m., followed by Game 6 Wednesday in Midale at 8 p.m. No date had

been set for the seventh game in Bienfait, if necessary, at press time. The Coalers are getting a balanced scoring attack in the playoffs, led by Big Six top scorer Chris Hammett (17 points). Lorne Tytlandsvik has 12, with Neil Petruic, Brennan Wrigley and Tyler Spencer each adding 11. Justin Richter (14 points) and Brendon Vertefeuille (13) lead Midale in playoff scoring. The Coalers are also preparing to take on the Shellbrook Elks in the provincial A final. Bienfait dumped Nokomis 6-2 on Friday in Game 2 of their semifinal to win the best-of-three series. The series kicks off Saturday in Bienfait at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 is next Saturday in Shellbrook, with the deciding game, if necessary, on March 31 at Spectra Place in Estevan. The Coalers lost to Milestone in the first round of provincials last year.

The Bienfait Coalers and Midale Mustangs kicked off the Big Six Championship series with the teams trading wins at home, halving the series at 1-1. The Coalers’ Lorne Tytlandsvik (19) tries to sidestep a check during a semifinal game against the Oxbow Huskies.

Cabbage Has the Right Stuff Nutrition experts recommend that you eat cabbage or other cruciferous vegetables -- meaning “cross-bearing” from the shape of their flowers, whose four petals resemble a cross -- as part of a healthy diet. They suggest you eat at least 2 cups, 3 to 4 times per week. Cruciferous vegetables include cauliflower, cress, bok choy, broccoli and similar green leaf vegetables. I love cruciferous vegetables, but I’ve found cabbage to be the most versatile of the group. Cabbage is a good source of vitamins C and A. When choosing cabbage heads, select those that are firm and dense with shiny, crisp, colorful leaves. Examine the leaves to make sure that they’re free of cracks, bruises and blemishes. Severe damage to the outer leaves means there is probably worm damage or decay in the inner core as well. We enjoy stuffing cabbage leaves with a variety of interesting ingredients. This recipe for Cabbage and Potato Cups makes a great weekday side dish, or a unique appetizer when topped with thin slices of crispy Prosciutto or Parma ham, or bacon crumbles. Remember, eat more cabbage (or other cruciferous vegetables) and improve your health!

the boiling water using a slotted spoon. 3. Boil cabbage about 5 minutes, or until softened. Transfer the largest leaves (at least 6) to a bowl of ice water to stop cooking. Transfer remaining cabbage to a colander to drain. Transfer large leaves to paper towels to drain, then pat dry. 4. Using a nonstick muffin tin with 6 (1-cup) muffin cups, lightly spray each muffin cup or oil with 2 tablespoons of butter. Cut parchment or wax paper into 12 (10- by 2-inch) strips. Put 2 strips in a crisscross pattern in each cup to help with removing cabbage. (You will have a 2-inch overhang.) Line each cup with a large cabbage leaf. Coarsely chop enough remaining cabbage to measure 3 cups, then add to onion along with garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and water, and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and browned, about 10 minutes. 5. Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 350 F. 6. Use at least 2 cups of leftover mashed or baked potatoes with the flesh scooped out. Alternately, peel raw potatoes and cut into 1-inch

cubes, then cover with cold salted water by 1 inch in a 2- to 3-quart saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook potatoes until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain in a colander, then set potatoes in colander over saucepan to steam-dry, uncovered, 5 minutes. Using a large bowl and a slotted spoon or potato masher, mix the potatoes with the buttermilk, cheese, horseradish, remaining 6 tablespoons butter and remaining 1 teaspoon salt and pepper until combined well. 7. Fill each cabbage leaf with 2 to 3 tablespoons of mashed potato mixture. Then, place a layer of the sauteed cabbage mixture on the potatoes. Top with remaining potato mixture, and sprinkle evenly with breadcrumbs. Drizzle crumbs with olive

oil. Fold edges of cabbage in toward filling (do not completely cover). At this point, you can cover and refrigerate the Cabbage and Potato Cups for 24 hours. Bring to room temperature (about 30 to 45 minutes) before baking. 8. Bake until heated through and edges of cabbage are well browned, 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer stuffed leaves to plates using wax or parchment overhangs. Makes 6 servings. SHORTCUT TIP: If you have at least 2 cups of leftover mashed potatoes, or leftover baked or micro-cooked potatoes, mix them with the rest of the stuffing ingredients to save time. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is

Fresh funding forwarded to Olympic athletes NATIONAL OTTAWA - Athletes competing in 11 sports at this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic games are getting more money from the federal government. About $2.29 million will be spread among sports organizations through the Own the Podium program. The sports chosen — including equestrian, soccer, swimming and athletics — are believed to offer the best chances for Canadian athletes to win medals at the London Games. Canada is aiming for a top-12 finish in the medal count at the Olympics and a top-eight finish at the

Paralympics. The head of the Canadian Olympic Committee calls the funding timely. *** ASHBURN, Va. - The Washington Redskins released Canadian safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, saying an early goodbye to one of their big free-agent signings from last year. The Redskins also cut former CFL player Mike Sellers on Monday, the day before the start of the NFL’s free agency signing period. Atogwe, a native of Windsor, Ont., signed a five-year, US$26-million contract just before the NFL lockout a year ago.

But he was hampered by hamstring, toe and knee injuries and finished the season as a backup. He was set to make $3.4 million this year. Sellers began his pro career in 1995 with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos and spent the the 2002 and ‘03 seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He has played 11 seasons with the Redskins, first joining the team in 1998 and returning in 2004. *** INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - There could be just two Canadians in the Olympic tennis event when it is played on the grass courts at Wimbledon in

Injuries, especially to her left knee, have prevented her from competing at her highest level recently, Paerson said in a statement posted on the Swedish ski federation’s website Monday. The 30-year-old Paerson won 19 medals at major championships, has won 42 World Cup races since her debut in 1998 and clinched two overall titles, in 2004 and 2005. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 38-year-old woman who has a very stressful job. It is also very well-paying, so I don’t want to give it up. I think it might be giving me chest pain. The pain comes and goes unpredictably. Sometimes I am just sitting at my desk, and I get a squeezing sensation in my chest. At other times, I had been hurrying around. I have had several EKGs, been examined by three doctors, had a stress test and a radioactive stress test. The doctors say my heart is healthy, and the chest pain could come from stress. In speaking with people I trust, I have been told to have a heart catheterization. What do you think? -- P.A. ANSWER: None of your three doctors told you that. Don’t you think they might know more than your friends? You have to be guided by advice given to you by those who have had experience in assessing people’s complaints. There’s no pattern to your chest pain. Heart pain, in contrast, causes chest pain when a person is physically active. That

pain goes when the person rests. Your kind of pain is not suggestive of a heart disorder. Your doctors have told you that your heart is healthy. You have had EKGs, stress tests and even a radioactive stress test. Those tests would have disclosed a heart problem if you had one. Furthermore, you are only 38 years old -- not an age for heart problems to occur. You mention no family history of heart trouble at early ages. With a catheterization, a thin, pliable tube is inched from a groin blood vessel to the site where the heart arteries are found. There, dye is injected so doctors can visualize the health of heart arteries. The doctors can spot any obstructions, like cholesterol buildup, in those arteries. It’s an amazing test. However, complications can arise from any procedure that invades the body. When the detection of heart disease can be accomplished in no other way, information from a catheterization is justified. In your case, it’s not. Stress is the most likely cause of your chest pain. Coronary artery disease is the No. 1 cause of death in most of the world’s countries. The booklet on that subject explains in detail its symptoms and its treatments. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL

32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’ve been talked into donating blood. My hangup is that I have a fitness program that I religiously adhere to. The thought of an extended rest bothers me. How long do you have to spend recuperating after donating blood? -- A.A. ANSWER: You’re not facing an extended recuperation after donating blood. One day is enough. That sounds like too little time, but it’s sufficient. You won’t notice it. It takes a full month for your blood count to return to what it was before you donated. That slight dip in your blood count isn’t going to affect your exercise performance unless you are into marathon training. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Aware of how badly Hope and Liam’s first encounter went, Bill tried to convince Steffy to hold off on signing the annulment papers. Hope asked Brooke not to tell anyone what she talked about in therapy. Ridge tried to talk Steffy out of leaving town as a way of coping with the end of her marriage. Hope and Liam tried once again to capture the elusive magic between them. Liam felt guilty for driving Steffy away because she was too heartbroken to be around him. Taylor and Brooke once again bickered over which of their daughters held the key to Liam’s heart. Wait to See: Hope reveals why she has a problem with intimacy. Bill faces a public-relations crisis. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Billie informed Hope that Bo was dying. Fortunately, Lexie was able to resuscitate Bo, but his condition was still grave. John and Hope broke into the security office to get their passports so they could fly back to Salem. EJ planned to take advantage of the rift between Abe

Rafe found out that Nicole was pregnant and agreed to keep the news secret from EJ. Wait to See: EJ has Jennifer arrested. Austin begs Carrie to give their marriage another shot.

Make a portable playmat for preschoolers I’ll bet your kids easily can map out the setting of their favorite TV series. They probably know exactly where the main characters live -- that they turn left to get to the water fountain and right to get to the stables. But how well do they know their own neighborhood? Here’s a playful way to become familiar with where they live in relationship to all the places that regularly touch their lives. It’s a portable town playmat made with an inexpensive window shade. Designed to mimic where you live, it’s personalized and perfect for indoor fun. Once it’s made, kids can spill out a basket of toys and bring their town to life. If you listen in, you might hear that a tiger is prowling the street right next to the supermarket! Wait until he finds himself eye-to-eye with the T-rex stomping down the steps of the library. And that bright-green cowboy. Look at him ambling out of the coffee shop. Wonder which direction he’ll run? To get started, you’ll need: --Plain white rolldown window shade from a discount store --Pencil and permanent nontoxic markers --Ruler --Acrylic paints and sponges for dabbing Here’s the fun: First, take a walk

with your young kids. Stroll down your street. Turn in various directions, discussing the outing as you go. Your conversation might go like this: “Let’s remember how close the post office is to the cleaners. Oh, look, the library is two whole blocks up from here. The bakery is across the street.” It’s a chance to teach that places aren’t just “out there.” They can be located. When you return, roll out the shade on the floor and sketch your community using a ruler and pencil, beginning with your home. Then, with a ruler, plot out important places in relationship to your dwelling. Color and decorate streets,

buildings and other details with markers. Don’t forget lakes, ponds or parks. Dip a small sponge lightly onto some acrylic paint and dab in bright colors for the water, flowers and trees. Let dry, gather small toys and let your “Our Town” play begin. To store, roll up the painted shade and set upright in a closet for another day. Extra idea: Add familiar faces to the toy pieces. Ask friends, teachers and shopkeepers if they will let you take close-up photos. Print on heavy paper, cut out the individuals, leaving an extra half-inch at the bottom to bend back and glue to the inside of a

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Put your restlessness to good use by indulging the Arian love of exploring new places and seeking new challenges. There also could be a new romance waiting to be “discovered.” TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise message from someone in your past could lead to a long-awaited reunion with a once-close friend. Also, look for a workplace problem to be resolved in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your self-confidence is rising, and that should be a significant factor in helping you adjust to a new social

situation, as well as adjusting to a series of changes in the workplace. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Turnabout could be lots of fun when someone who previously accepted your tender, loving care without question now suggests that he or she wants to start taking care of you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Put the lessons you learned from past disappointments to work in planning your future. The way ahead opens to opportunities “purrfectly” suited to the adventurous Lion. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to renew contacts with

family members and/or old friends who somehow slipped off your personal viewing screen in recent years. Travel also is favored. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Most problems surrounding that recent personal situation have been resolved, and that means you should move on to other things that are important to you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Spend this weekend recharging your physical and spiritual energies. When you return to your workaday world, you’ll be ready to take on that new project. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful how you advise a troubled friend. Even your wise counsel could be misunderstood. Better to suggest that he or she seek professional help. CAPRICORN (Decem-

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2012 ber 22 to January 19) Family problems once again dominate and, once again, everyone seeks your guidance in these matters. Later, you can indulge in some much-needed relaxation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some mixed signals create confusion in the workplace. Best advice: Ask for explanations before you attempt to deal with any of these matters on your own. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A patch of roiling water in the workplace could be threatening, but stay the course and you’ll soon be clear of it. Then go out and have a great time with loved ones. BORN THIS WEEK: Your extraordinary leadership qualities mark you as someone people can turn to for guidance in difficult situations. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Is Basement Moisture a Leak, or Humidity? humid at these times. -- Bill in upstate New York

Q: My basement stays fairly dry, but in the spring and during other really rainy periods I can see the concrete walls are wet. Is it condensation or water leaking inside? I haven’t seen any puddles of water on the floor, but it is really

A: There’s an easy way to test whether the moisture on the basement walls is seepage (water leaking inside) or condensation. Get a few large squares of aluminum foil and tape them to random spots on the basement walls and floor. Use water-resistant tape and completely cover all four edges of the foil so that no air can get underneath it. Leave them there for

a couple of days, and then carefully peel away the tape and check both sides of the foil. If the side facing the wall (the inner side) is wet, then seepage is your issue. If the outer side is wet, condensation is the problem. If both sides are wet, seepage is the most likely issue, with condensation possibly a result of the seepage. To reduce seepage, check all of your gutters and downspouts to make sure they aren’t damaged

and that rainwater is being directed well away from the foundation. The drain trough under the downspout also should be checked; make sure water isn’t pooling there. Next, check the foundation and basement walls for small cracks, holes or gaps. Repair these with the appropriate type of cement. Finally, paint the interior basement walls with a waterproofing paint specifically formulated for this task, which adheres

well to concrete or masonry. To reduce condensation issues, install a dehumidifier in the basement, or install a fan that will pull air outside and help the basement air circulate. Wrap insulation around cold-water pipes so condensation is less likely to occur in the basement space. Outside, try and increase the amount of air and sunlight that reach the basement by trimming back plants and hedges, especially around basement windows.

HOME TIP: Debris and leaf dams in your gutters can damage them and lead to other problems around your home’s exterior. Clean your roof gutters twice a year. Direct to Smelter – Precious Metals Roadshow comes to Estevan Ursa Major Gold, Silver & Coin will be in Estevan on March 21st. and 22nd. during a roadshow making its way through SE Saskatchewan. You can bring your gold, silver & coins to the Estevan Public Library between 10am and 6pm each day. No appointment is required. Barry Dick is a precious metals buyer and President of Ursa Major Gold, Silver & Coin. Ursa Major hails from Richmond, BC but Dick has his roots in Winkler. “Ursa Major has the unique advantage of dealing direct with a smelter” said Dick. “That allows us to cut out one or even two middlemen. Ursa Major purchases gold and silver from other gold buyers, pawn shops, jewellers and jewellery makers as well as from the general public.” Recent price increases of precious metals have created lots of “gold buyers”including mail in companies. Many of those buyers offer pennies on the dollar to unsuspecting customers and are limited to what they buy, choosing to ignore silver and coins and only purchase gold. “Better Business Bureau complaints about mail in

gold companies are extremely high, but it is hard to regulate. My advice is that you do NOT mail your precious metals to anyone you haven’t met or spoken with at length”says Dick. Ursa Major analyzes your gold, silver and coins while you watch, with the process explained to you in detail. Any coins with numismatic value will be set aside from those with a ‘melt’ value. Silver items such as jewellery, flatware and serving trays will be analyzed for hallmark identification. Items thought to contain gold will also be analyzed for hallmarks, and then confirmed using precise testing that is done while you watch. Then a cash offer is made and you decide to sell or not. Dick took out his first gold claim when he turned 16 in the 1970’s and has been involved with precious metals ever since. An ardent gold panner, he was a regular at the world championship gold panning competition with a personal best of 3rd place in 1984. Now he concentrates on building the wholesale business with jewellers and brokers while taking the roadshow out one or two times a month across

Western Canada. “People bring in all kinds of interesting items, but for the most part it is a broken or old chain, unloved jewelry, a single earring, and out of fashion items like charm bracelets. We also accept dental gold but it should be clean. Lately I see more and more silver flatware sets, but before you bring those in please make sure it says “Sterling” on the handles. There is a lot of silver plated flatware that we can’t buy due to the low silver content” says Dick. Another valuable item is coins with silver content. Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars and Dollars from Canada and America can be sorted and the silver content determined in no time at all. People are encouraged to bring in any and all coins for assessment. Dick had a customer in September who brought in a coffee tin of coins in which he found some South African Rands made of pure gold. Ursa Major Gold, Silver & Coin will be at the Estevan Public Library on Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday, March 22 from 10am to 6pm. No appointment necessary.
