The results could surprise both supporters and detractors. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) News about an upcoming venture causes you to make some last-minute adjustments in your plans. Is commercial space travel stupid or kind of a cool idea?
He She He She Said By: Jordan Baker
If you thought there was no such thing as space travel for the common man, you’re only partly correct. Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic company will send its clients travelling where now many men have gone before, hovering just above the planet’s atmosphere. It will be available to everyone, though like most things only the very rich and well connected will truly have the opportunity to travel in space. It’s no joke that you can go to the Virgin Galactic website and click on a link for “space tickets,” which then directs interested people sitting on $200,000 and absolutely no new places to travel to on Earth, to make reservations by contacting an “accredited space agent.” Accredited space agent is what I always hoped my job title would be because I think that’s what James Bond will be in the future. But really, they are just regular travel agents who will talk about space with you and jot down your credit card information. You need to train with the crew for two or three days before your trip into space. That is something the kids of tomorrow won’t have to do because they will be receiving all the elementary space-travel training they need by the time they’re eight years old. In those days, space-travel training will be considered elementary. Why wouldn’t everyone want the chance to be blasted into space with the opportunity to float around in zero gravity for a little while with five rich friends? We kind of take it for granted that we know what the Earth looks like from space, but we have really only known for the last 50 years. My grandparents couldn’t have had any idea growing up except from artist’s conceptualized idea. I’ve seen concept art involving space, and it’s not always very accurate. This is something I would love to do, so starting today I will be accepting donations at the Mercury office, and you can all help me reach zero-gravity. I imagine there’s something very serene about looking out at the Earth from the quiet of space and knowing that you just gave $200,000 to Richard Branson.
By: Tonaya Marr
Commercial space travel is so stupid that it hurts me to talk about it. Why would a civilization that is rapidly burning its way through precious non-renewable resources during a recession start sending the rich and famous into space? Are we really in a position to waste the materials and resources to send billionaires into space for a vacation? Last thing I’d heard, there aren’t very many countries that are sitting very financially comfortable right now. Certainly these people with the cash to be building rockets to send people into space for fun have other options to spend their money on, like maybe helping the poor? I’m not at all against space exploration. I think that learning about our universe is a great thing, and could someday benefit all of human kind. But these commercial travellers will not be helping anyone except for the business people who will be lining their pockets with cash. Plus, space travel is dangerous. Astronauts have to go through years of intense training, both mental and physical, before they are able to head into outer space. Sending rich, chubby billionaires into space could actually be dangerous. There’s the risk of injury, and imagine if one of them gets up there and starts to freak out? I’ve seen Apollo 15, I know this happens. We also don’t want to trivialize what real astronauts do. For so long, these men and women have been international heroes. Sending some random business person into space is just an insult to the hard work and dedication of the brave men and women who pioneered the technology to even make commercial space travel a possibility. In summary: just don’t do it. Don’t send people into space. Let them have their fun at places like Disney World or the Mall of America, and get the economy generating again. Space Mountain is pretty fun too.

‘Minor’ heart attacks can still be deadly DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband, 46, died suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack. An autopsy showed that he died from what the doctor said was a minor heart attack. How does a minor heart attack kill? It was major for him and me. -- C.C. ANSWER: The pathologist who performed the autopsy must have found that only a small section of heart was involved, and only a small heart artery was obstructed. Minor heart attacks can lead to major complications, including death. They can generate abnormal heartbeats, so abnormal that the heart’s pumping action stops. You have my deepest sympathy. The booklet on heart attacks explains why they happen and how they’re prevented. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 102W, Box 536475,

DONOHUE: I want to get rid of a lot of expired medicines. I have heard that flushing them down the toilet or putting them in the garbage will make them end up in our drinking water. What is the proper solution? -- M.S. ANSWER: Different government agencies have different recommendations
for medicine disposal. Congress is trying to resolve those differences. First, check with your drugstore to see if it has a program to dispose of medicines; many do. Also check with your town, county or state to see if it has “take-back” programs. Many do. If you can’t find a facility that accepts old medicines, mix them with coffee grounds, sawdust, kitty litter or similar materials (making them less appealing for children or pets to eat), seal them in a plastic bag and put them in your trash. A few drugs ought to be flushed down the toilet or the sink. These drugs are mostly powerful painkillers, like morphine, fentanyl, oxycodone and Demerol. They pose a danger to children, pets and even adults if accidentally ingested. This advice comes from the Food and Drug Administration. You can find the

Will you give me some directions on what to do? -- H.A. ANSWER: You can try to handle it on your own, but be careful. Don’t traumatize the toe or skin. Soak your foot in warm,

Dental floss hooked under the corner of the skin helps you accomplish this. From this day onward, cut your toenails on a horizontal plane. Don’t round off the edges. Who is more ethical: rich people or poor people? The shocking truth is that it’s not the super rich. Score one for poor people. A study by a team of professors at the University of Toronto and the University of California, Berkeley says rich people are more likely to lie in negotiations and engage in unethical behaviour at work. This is the kind of information I should be taking into salary negotiations. I am worried that if it works too well, it may appear that I would be arguing for a reduction in pay, just as an extra precaution to ensure I am not tempted to test any ethically-questionable waters. It’s true, journalists have ethics too, and according to the study, ours would be as noble as anybody’s. The day after reading about the study finding unethical rich people, I see another story about a billionaire Canadian accused of running an illegal gambling website. With that, I conclude the findings in this one study must be true. The findings do beg the question: is the only way to get rich by making an unethical pledge with the devil?
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers Maybe the correlation is that poor people need to pool resources and work together in order to survive, whereas the wealthy don’t need to rely on anybody else. Growing up in these different atmospheres will naturally instill different values and teach people at a young age different ways to self-preserve. In the study, individuals played a game of dice with a pot of $50. Those of high economic status were more likely to cheat, as much as three times more likely, and declare rolling a higher number. It didn’t matter if $50 was a lot of money to them. It reminds me of The Simpsons episode in which the billionaire Mr. Burns was promised eternal happiness for $1. “I’d be happier with the dollar,” he
said. Wall Street’s Gordon Gekko, with his famous, “greed is good” line, appears to be an accurate representation of the economic elite. I guess pop culture has been warning us of the questionable behaviour of wealthy people for quite some time. Maybe the study was unnecessary, and the scientists could have just watched movies and cartoons to get their answers. The wealthy in the study were also more likely to not say anything if a cashier gave them too much change after purchasing a coffee. So it’s true, poor people are poor by choice; it’s just not the choice everyone thought (to be lazy). The choice instead is whether or not to sacrifice their ethical standards. It seems that in a fit of stubbornness, poor people would rather remain that way than to push another person in the mud to get ahead. A promising side note to this global recession may be that the world as a whole has become a little more ethical in the last five years.
Seeking respect for the Clydesdale Horse power on the farm for most is only a memory, or perhaps something read about in books. So I am always intrigued when I have the opportunity to talk to someone still interested in draft horses. For many who remain dedicated to the big horses, it is usually something that is deeply felt. They love the gentle giants that once powered the farm. It is something I can relate to since my dad told the story of quitting school after Grade 8 so he could stay home and work the horses in the field. I’ve written about Merlin Ford in this space before. He is the Kuroki area man hoping to create a book on the draft horse and their integral part in the history of Saskatchewan. “I was looking at all the jobs horses did. There were a whole bunch many people had probably never seen,” he said in a Yorkton This Week (YTW) interview in 2011. Ford said most people are at least somewhat aware of horses doing farm work, pulling plows and binders and threshing machines, but at one point they did all the jobs in a city too. “People think of milk wagon horses,” he said, but added basically everything that moved was moved with horses. Goods would arrive by train and then be taken to stores and homes by wagons drawn by draft horses. Ford said even buildings were moved, drawn by 20 or more horses. “People don’t realize, or remember that,” he said. Some do remember and continue to breed and promote the big horses. Take for example long-time Stockholm, Sask. area farmer Louise Szumutku of Clydesdale Creek Farm who was named Clyde Person of the Year for her involvement with
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist the draft breed. “I have been involved with the Clydesdales over 20 years,” she said in a recent YTW interview with yours truly. “I guess you could say I married into it as my husband, Delvin, has never seen a day on the farm without them. “You call it a business, and I guess that is what it is. I look at it to be the love of the Clydesdales. They are known to be Gentle Giants with each having their own unique personalities, and each holding a place in my heart. “I look to it as having a personal relationship with each horse. “My husband has taught me so much and my passion for the breed grows each year. Spring time is my favourite with having the nursery ready when each colt is born. The time flies when we are out bonding with each one.” And there is Sandy Weber. She and her husband Klaus are emigrating to Canada from South Africa, and they are going through the long course of quarantines to bring their Clydesdale stallion with them. “Firstly we had to go into quarantine in South Africa in Bronkhorstspruit for 26 days, then we flew to Mauritius, where we were in quarantine for a total of 92 days, then we flew to Germany, where we have to be for 90 days,” she said. Yet the time and money to bring the stallion is something Weber said she was happy
to deal with. “In South Africa we did not have a farm. I bred Clydesdales from our small holding as a hobby - which took up a lot of my time,” she said in another of my YTW interviews. “We decided to bring our horses, because they are part of the family - the stallion is registered, and is of good breeding, but the real reason is because he is ‘my boy’ and my daughter brought her gelding because she and the stallion are inseparable, and Bailie is Kayla’s best friend.” And then there is Greg Gallagher of Canora. He is one of those who holds the big horse, in his case, the Clydesdale, close to his heart. Gallagher is the breeder of Donegal Dr. Pepper, a horse that was named Supreme Champion Clydesdale of the world at the World Clydesdale Show held in Madison, Wisconsin in late October 2011. Gallagher has been involved with Clydesdales almost since birth. He explained his father was born in 1883, and when he turned 15 “took a team of Clydesdales to the bush in Quebec.” He said it was good business since a man made $8 a month, but a man with a team made $30. Gallagher’s father would move west, settling just northwest of Yorkton, where he again raised Clydesdales until retiring to the city in 1960. “So it’s in the blood,” he told me in an interview. The amazing dedication to draft horses by people like those mentioned here may not make sense to many in this era of doing everything for the greatest returns, but when I think back to my dad, I understand it completely and applaud such efforts to keep the big horse part of the farm story.

weekly Southeast Trader instalments. But it’s not like I can e-mail them when I finish because my Internet is off. Plus, there’s a good chance my laptop battery won’t make it all the way to the end, especially since I’m also using it to charge my phone. It’s also getting kind of cold in here. So I’ve lit five highly scented candles.
If my dad tried to enter my apartment right now, his allergies would be hugely overwhelmed, and he’d be forced to leave, which I now realize is a cool discovery and I will be writing it down to use at a more convenient time. Anyway, to combat the dropping temperature, I’ve thrown on a couple of blankets and a hoodie, but my hands are cold and I have to
type. It’s really not helping that I’m eating ice cream. And I’m pretty sure the power affects the temperature of my water, so I can’t wash dishes because it would be pointless without hot water. (I recognize that this is incorrect. I’ve just decided to go with it because I really don’t want to wash dishes.) I considered just heading back to Estevan, because I have the next couple of days off anyways. But I can’t see into my closet to pack my clothing and while it may not be obvious all the time, I do try to co-ordinate my clothing in some semblance of style. And the most problematic of all my troubles created by this powerless dilemma: I watched Paranormal Activ-

other infested areas. Look behind appliances, including the stove and refrigerator, for dropped food or spilled juices. Check and clean all cabinets, especially those in which food is stored (canned or fresh), in case any food has fallen out of sight and spoiled. Treat drains, including unused or infrequently used drains, by pouring a cup of white vinegar down each and letting it sit for several minutes before rinsing with hot water. If a thorough cleaning
doesn’t end the problem, talk with a pest control professional about locating other sources of the infestation and treating with a pesticide. To prevent future infestations or minimize the impact of one (since fruit flies can be brought into the house with fruit and veggies from the store), clean the kitchen and other areas where food is eaten or stored once a week, and reduce the amount of clutter in those areas so the bugs have fewer places to settle in. Treat drains with vinegar once a
As I write this column, I’m sitting in my dark apartment contemplating the meaning of electricity. And by that I mean I’m wishing that my power would come back on. It’s been off for nearly an hour now and my laptop battery is about to die, and I’m really wishing I would have charged my phone at work, and that I wouldn’t have bought Popsicles at Sobeys on my way home. (Guess what I had to eat for supper before they melted.) All this brings me to my current deep thoughts: how freakin’ lost are we without electricity? Driving home, the street lights at the intersection near the university are out. In a
perfect world, all drivers would flawlessly execute a perfect four-way-stop. But this is near the university, and many of the cars in the area have after-market spoilers, which should elude the intelligence level of the area’s drivers. And there are tons of pedestrians who run the show around the university. So a bunch of us just sat there, no one sure who should drive, who should yield and if it would be inappropriate to run down the pedestrians crossing kitty-corner because they have the ultimate rightof-way. Long story short, I eventually made it home to my supper of frozen ice made with “real fruit juice” and got started at typing my
Q: How can I get rid of pesky fruit flies? They’re all over my kitchen. -- Stephen F., Warwick, R.I. A: Fruit flies, as their name indicates, love hanging out around fruit, or any sort of sweetish, sugary item. They’re much more common in the summer months, but it’s not unusual to see them in early spring, particularly in the kitchen, if the conditions are right.
A warm environment combined with a bowl of overripe bananas often is all it takes for a few fruit flies to set up housekeeping, and in a few days, it will seem like they’re everywhere. The fastest way to get

They also can thrive in drains, empty containers, mops, piles of damp rags or clothing -- anywhere that liquid or food has been allowed to sit and get stagnant. They can even get into your refrigerator. Throw out old food and clean the kitchen or

The most vital element of SaskEnergy’s safety initiatives is YOU! Make sure you know where underground lines are before you dig, by contacting Sask1st Call on-line at www.sask1stcall.com or call 1-866-828-4888. When planning a building demolition project, contact SaskEnergy at 1-888-7000-GAS (427). Pay off the mortgage first I get a little nervous when I see headlines suggesting oil could hit $150 a barrel, if Israel attacks Iran. Beyond the nuclear implications of such an exchange, oil at that level could be a bullet to the chest of many economies that are struggling to get back on their feet. In particular, oil at that level could be a tremendous blow to both the European and American economies. It wasn’t that long ago - July 2008 in fact - that oil did indeed hit close to that level, topping out at $147 a barrel. And by the next spring, it had dropped to $38 a barrel. Part and parcel of this collapse was the recession walloping the global economy, a
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile recession spurred by rising fuel prices. So despite the fact a strong oil price helps out the sector I report on, too strong a price is not a thing to wish for, but rather one to avoid. There are certain tipping points where the economy simply can’t pay anymore. The laws of supply and demand catch up, and soon demand dries up, and prices fall,
or worse, collapse. Should we see another collapse in the near future, this not only spells trouble for the companies and workers, but also for the provinces and federal government. It’s oil and potash that are keeping Newfoundland, Saskatchewan and Alberta, and by extension, Canada, humming at a time when much of North America is still in the doldrums. Will our petro-dollar
stay at parity with the greenback if oil collapses again? Some manufacturers would see it as a reprieve, even if consumers do not. At current oil prices, Saskatchewan’s budget this March should allow the province a little bit of breathing room. Hopefully this will be used to pay down debt, not increase spending. That was the pattern four years ago, and would do well for us if it were repeated. Saskatchewan was better positioned to weather the storm that followed, even if the finance department truly messed up its potash price predictions. The quicker this province can clear off its debt,
the healthier we will be in the long run. That lesson can be applied on a micro level as well. In January, the Bank of Montreal announced the lowest fixed interest rate on a closed five-year mortgage in Canadian history. Other banks soon followed up with similar offers. I personally jumped on that like a fat kid on a Smartie, seeking to reduce interest costs, and therefore debt servicing. It’s part of a personal plan of reducing as much debt as possible, and freeing up cash flow. That way, when bad things do happen, as inevitably they do, there is more breathing room to roll with the punches.
Some people are going to be hoping for a new football stadium in Regina coming out of this budget. With the Grey Cup coming to Regina in 2013, and a premier who has his own weekly football radio segment called “Premier’s Picks,” it would be astonishing if we don’t hear such an announcement. Everyone likes new, shiny things, especially if they will have a Rider flag flying from the rooftop. But before we buy a stadium with oil royalties, let’s pay off the mortgage on the province, first. - Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian. zinchuk@sasktel.net

Fat cat raising money to lose PROVINCIAL MOOSE JAW, Sask. - Fat Boy is still trying to slim down. The hefty feline became a celebrity last summer at the Moose Jaw Humane Society after his efforts to lose weight went viral. The 24-pound cat’s fame started with a facebook page and stretched to include autographed posters. The attention has helped out his fellow animals at the shelter, raising a few thousand dollars through donations from fans online. Shelter spokeswoman Karla Pratt says Fat Boy’s last weighin had him down to 20 pounds, but he’s still got a way to go to hit his target weight of 14 pounds. NATIONAL LONDON, Ont. - Jury selection began last week in the trial of a man accused of killing an eight-yearold girl who went missing outside her school in
Woodstock, Ont., in 2009. Michael Rafferty, 31, is charged with first-degree murder, sexual assault causing bodily harm and kidnapping in the death of Victoria Stafford. To r i d i s a p p e a r e d while on her way home from school on April 8, 2009, and her body was found three months later. Terri-Lynne McClintic, now 21, has already been convicted of fi rstdegree murder in the girl’s death. A total of 1,375 people have been summoned for jury duty this week and next, and they could end up serving on the Rafferty trial or any other criminal or civil jury trial starting during that period. *** PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. - City councillors in Prince Rupert, B.C., are the latest to officially oppose the Enbridge Inc. (TSX:ENB) Northern Gateway oil pipeline project.
The north coast city has unanimously adopted a resolution recently approved by the SkeenaQueen Charlotte Regional District outlining the potential devastation of an oil spill from tankers carrying Alberta crude to Asian markets. Councillor Jennifer Rice says Prince Rupert’s silence could have been taken as acceptance of the $5.5-billion proposal to pipe Alberta oil across B.C. to Kitimat, where supertankers would carry it to overseas customers. Councillors in Terrace, 150 kilometres east of Prince Rupert, voted two weeks ago to oppose the pipeline project. *** OTTAWA - The independent Parliamentary budget officer says a federal measure to restrict conditional sentences for offenders is going to cost the provinces and territories more than $100 million a year.
Kevin Page’s report says about 3,800 additional offenders would face jail time under changes to the Criminal Code contained in the Conservative omnibus crime bill. And the cost per offender to Canadian taxpayers would increase to $41,000 from the current $2,600 — a 16-fold increase. The 97-page report also states that the cost projections are “likely underestimates” and do not include the cost of building more prisons. INTERNATIONAL PARIS - France’s constitutional Council has ruled that a law concerning
the mass killings of Armenians a century ago violates the country’s constitution. The law passed in December makes it a crime to deny that the killings of some 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 constituted genocide. Turkey, which says there was no systematic campaign against Armenians, strongly opposed the law. The two countries’ relations have suffered since the law’s passage. *** TUNIS, Tunisia - Tunisia’s president has told a local paper he is ready to offer asylum to Syria’s leader Bashar Assad as part of a negotiated solution to
end the Syrian conflict, the paper’s website announced said Tuesday. President Moncef Marzouki said the offer would also extend to Assad’s associates, in the interview set to appear Wednesday in the Frenchlanguage daily La Presse. Tunisia would be a surprising choice for Assad’s retirement as it was the first Arab nation to topple a longtime autocrat when its former president fled the country a year ago in the face of protests. Pro-democracy demonstrations in Syrian towns and cities have been violently repressed, provoking world condemnation of the government.
Aluminum cookware Q: I have a complete set of Guardian aluminum cookware from Century Metalcraft Corporation. It is from the 1950s, and the conditions of the various pieces vary. I even have a recipe book that came with the set and a box of cleaning supplies provided by the company. Any information will be appreciated. -- Carolin, Stratton, Colo. A: Guardian cookware was manufactured in Los Angeles from the mid-1930s until the plant was destroyed by fire in about 1956. The product was sold mostly at house parties, much like Avon is marketed today. The pieces were constructed of hammered aluminum with glass tops. The durability was one of the main selling points. Since glass lids got broken and lost, they are especially coveted by collectors. Typical prices found on the Internet include a turkey roaster, $75; 1-quart casserole, $18; and 2.5-quart Dutch oven, $22. *** Q: I have a set of three Badger Fire Extinguishers, one full-size copper, one full-size brass and one juniorsize in copper. All three are museum quality. My concern is value. -- Gerald, Haverhill, Mass. Coalers take first game against Oxbow The Bienfait Coalers got off to a good start in the second round of the Big Six Hockey League playoffs, dumping the Oxbow Huskies 7-3 at home on Tuesday. Game 2 of that series was set to go Wednesday in Oxbow, with Game 3 tonight in Bienfait. If necessary, the series continues Sunday in Oxbow and Monday in Bienfait. In the other Big Six semifinal, the Midale Mustangs and Wawota Flyers were tied at one game apiece entering Wednesday’s game

Game 4 is tonight in Midale, with the fifth game, if necessary, Sunday in Wawota. In provincial action, the Coalers closed out Balcarres on Sunday by winning Game 3 of the A semifinal 5-2 on Sunday in Balcarres.

A teaching clock for preschoolers To help your preschoolers learn how to tell time on a traditional clock, make a teaching clock with a pizza pan. Personalize it with photos and drawings to remind them of the activities and chores they do throughout the day. There’s no time like the present, so get started with these four easy steps: Step 1: NUMBER from 1 to 12 around the edge of a metal pizza pan to create a baseline clock face. Use self-sticking numbers, stickers or permanent markers. Step 2: COLLECT 12 large plastic milk-jug caps and number them on the top from 1 to 12. On the backs, attach a piece of thick, selfsticking magnet (available in rolls at hardware stores).

The Coalers had lost the second game 2-1 at home on Saturday. Bienfait will now face Nokomis in the A south final. Dates for the series had not been determined at press time. Nokomis had knocked out Arcola with an 8-2 win in Game 2 of their series on Saturday. In the C bracket, Carlyle lost their two-game semifinal to Bethune, who won 4-2 on Saturday at home and 11-5 on Monday in Carlyle.
Step 3: CUT OUT two craft foam or cardboard arrows for clock hands, making one 3 inches long and the other 4 inches long. Attach magnets to backs. Step 4: DRAW pictures or cut out snapshots or magazine photos of what your child does in a typical day. For example: Eat breakfast, brush teeth, play outside, pick up toys, brush the dog, read a story, etc. Glue the images to small cardboard squares, attach magnets to the backs, and
use interchangeably with the numbers on the clock to help your child understand what happens at different times throughout the day. Make extra cards for activities your child might do weekly, such as “visit Grandma and Grandpa,” “walk to story hour at the neighborhood library,” “attend ballet class,” etc. At bedtime, kids can choose the cardboard activity square that represents a specific special activity for the following day. Store them in a small box or basket when not in use. Extra Tips for Use: Remove all numbered caps and replace by matching the numbers on the caps with the numbers on the pan. Use
numbered caps to practice counting. Note: Small plastic milk-jug caps may pose a choking hazard to children 4 and under. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Are Braun’s hall chances doomed? The start of the regular baseball season is still almost a month away and already the biggest story of the spring is about drugs. Didn’t that topic hit the showers when Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens hung up their spikes? This latest drug saga is a good news-bad news deal. Good for Milwaukee Brewers leftfielder Ryan Braun, who appealed his 50-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs; bad for Major League Baseball because its great plan to rid the game of juicers may have been jeopardized because of Braun’s acquittal. Braun is no ordinary Ryan. He’s the reigning MVP of the National League, a superstar with offensive credentials that one day will be scrutinized closely by voters in Cooperstown, where the Hall of Fame resides. Unfortunately for Braun, having the drug allegations hanging over his head likely means the Hall will never call his name — innocent or not. Bonds has not been convicted of anything drug-related (other than obstruction of justice) and we’ll find out next year, when he’s eligible for the Hall of Fame for the first time, just how anxious the baseball establishment is to have the highly-suspected cheater, Big Head Barry,

given a big-head bust in Cooperstown. Same goes with Roger Clemens, whose career stats would make him an automatic first-year selection to the hallowed Hall. Instead, he’ll be going to the Hall’s gallows, joining Pete Rose in the non-existent wing for Automatic Hall of Famers Who Shamed Their Way Out. Braun, another “innocent” one, may join them one day. His 50-game suspension, scheduled to begin at the start of the 2012 season, has been set aside on appeal. The urine sample he provided — and was allegedly found to contain excessive and illegal levels of testosterone — apparently stayed in the drug tester’s home over a weekend instead of being sent immediately by FedEx to the drug lab. That 48-hour delay was all that two of the three-person arbitration panel needed to uphold the Milwaukee slugger’s appeal. So Braun is “innocent” after all. In the court of public opinion, though — the one that ultimately leads to the Hall of Fame — his guilt or innocence is yet to be decided. The likely outcome? The only way he’ll get into the Hall of Fame is to pay the $20 admission fee, like you and me. • Blogger Chad Picasner, on the Yankees announcing their 40-man roster: “Three catchers, 19 pitchers, seven outfielders, eight infielders, two ac-

Regina to field lingerie football team in 2012 PROVINCIAL REGINA - The Lingerie Football League is coming to Regina. The fledgling league announced Wednesday that the city will be home to Canada’s third franchise. The as-yet-unnamed team joins the B.C. Angels and Toronto Triumph in the women’s indoor league that has its players wear protective padding, lingerie and little else. Toronto played against American competition in 2011, but the LFL plans to announce three more teams based north of the border to create a sixteam league known as LFL Canada. The LFL — which dubs itself as “true fantasy football” — has operated in the United States for three years. Teams in LFL Canada will play a 12-week schedule that
is set to begin Aug. 25, 2012. NATIONAL WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. - The mother of an eightyear-old boy spent an anxious night worrying about her son after he was hospitalized following a chlorine “incident” that sent 70 people to hospital in British Columbia, most of them children gathered for a swim meet. Almost all were treated and released following the incident at a community pool in Williams Lake, B.C. yesterday, but one adult and Angela Swyers’ son, Billy, were kept overnight. Swyers said she and Billy were sitting on the bleachers when she began to smell fumes in the air and everybody ran out of the pool. Many of the children were coughing heavily, she added. ***
TORONTO - Another season is slipping away from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Chants of “Fire Wilson!” echoed through Air Canada Centre on Tuesday night as the Florida Panthers put the finishing touches on a 5-3 win over the sinking Maple Leafs, an all-too-familiar outcome for frustrated fans in Toronto. It was the ninth loss in 10 games for a team general manager Brian Burke decided against tinkering with ahead of Monday’s trade deadline. Even Wilson couldn’t blame the fans for calling for his job. “It’s frustrating, but understandable,” he said. “We didn’t do anything at the trade deadline and we came out tentative to say the least. Emirates - Egypt midfielder Ahmed Hassan is set to become the most capped player of all time when he takes the pitch in a friendly on Wednesday against Niger in Qatar. The 36-year-old Hassan will make his 179th appearance, meaning he will break the record he has shared for several months with Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohamed al-Deayea. The Saudi goalkeeper last played in 2006. Hassan, who has won four Africa Cup of Nations titles and been named the tournament’s best player twice, made his international debut in 1995. He was set to break the record on Monday in a friendly against Kenya, but the Kenyans used its under-23 squad for the hastily arranged match and the 5-0 win for Egypt didn’t count as an official game. Hassan converted a penalty in the win.

One year in, new powers for pharmacists It was March 4 last year when pharmacists were granted new authorities, allowing them to prescribe treatment for certain ailments and provide refills of therapies for chronic illnesses. It’s Pharmacist Awareness Week from March 4 to 10, and following that legislation, it’s important to ensure that everybody knows exactly what the pharmacist can do for them now. As it turns out, a lot of the things they do now are similar to what they’ve always been doing, but just in a little bit different way, said Brad Cooper, a pharmacist at Pharmasave in Estevan. “It’s important to maintain that continuity of care,” said Cooper, adding that they communicate a lot with family physicians to ensure there is a full medical record. When people can’t get in to see their family doctors in a timely manner, their only recourse was to go to the emergency room before the new legislation was introduced. “Often we’re helping people out of a jam, people who need just enough to hold them until their next appointment,” which he noted can be several weeks in Estevan. “Now they can actually get access to (their medication). Rather than burdening the system by going to the hospital for a cold sore, it saves time and money.” With the new rules in place, pharmacists have the opportunity to more closely fulfil their intended role. “It’s allowing us to do more of the things that we’re trained to do,” added Larry Preddy, pharmacist at Henders Drugs.
Like a good neighbour...
we’re always there when you need us. We’re proud to be your neighbourhood pharmacy! Whatever your health concern, we want to help. Our convenient hours make it easy for you to get what you need, when you need it.
The list of prescription powers, which currently includes cold sores, acne and insect bites, is expected to be added to, noted Preddy, and the plans to do so began before the original legislation was first introduced. “You can’t manage if you don’t measure,” Cooper said of the monitoring the new system has undergone in the past year. With all pharmacists involved in the process, the Pharmacists’ Association of Saskatchewan has looked at how things have progressed in the first year in order to see how best to expand the program. Cooper noted that they can also adjust a previous prescription, which may be necessary, particularly in children who grow quickly, and as they gain weight may need a different dosage. The pharmacist’s prescribing powers are something Preddy would like more people to be aware of. He said a lot of people picked up on the renewal process pretty quickly, but fewer have a good understanding of what can be prescribed. Because of the shortage of family doctors in the Estevan area, Cooper said he has noticed more people take advantage of stepping into the pharmacy for a refill than what he’s heard from pharmacists in larger centres.

“There is a higher utilization of it in Estevan,” he said adding, “We’re there to supplement, not replace their primary doctor. It’s all about the patient getting better access to health care.” As far as Pharmacy Awareness Week is concerned, neither pharmacist said they had anything particular planned to recognize the special week. Cooper noted that they may do something after their re-opening, but in general they like to highlight the pharmacist’s involvement in the community. “We like to think Pharmacy Awareness Week is everyday,” said Preddy. “And we put forward our best effort everyday, not just for one week.”

Grocery carts overflowing with health Eating healthy starts at the supermarket. Filling your grocery cart with nutritional foods is easy, when you know what to choose. Before going grocery shopping Make a list of all the food items you need. Don’t go grocery shopping on an empty stomach, otherwise you’re bound to be tempted by items of dubious nutritional value. Make the right choices Once at the supermarket, try to focus on the fresh produce department. Fresh fruits and vegetables provide many of the necessary elements for good health. Opt for seasonal fruits and vegetables, but
during the winter don’t be afraid to buy frozen fruits and vegetables; they are just as nutritious and will allow you to vary your menus. Choose whole grain products. Whole grains that are found in breads, cereals, brown rice, quinoa, breakfast rusks, and natural popcorn are good sources of fiber. Choose food items whose ingredient lists start with whole wheat flour, whole grain barley, whole grain rye, etc. For dairy products and alternatives, choose fatfree milk or low-fat milk with a 1 or 2 percent fat content. Whole milk (3.25 percent) is recommended
For The Health Of It!
for young children. Choose yogurts and cheeses with a minimum fat content as well. Milk can be replaced by enriched soy beverages, ideally unsweetened ones. When shopping for meat and alternatives, choose the leanest cuts. Even better is to limit your consumption of red meat, replacing it with two portions of fish per week and with white meats such as chicken and turkey. Try tofu, a vegetable protein with no cholesterol and an ability to take on the flavor of whatever sauce it’s cooked in. A healthy grocery basket will also contain proteins such as beans and lentils.
Allen Miller

Four tricks to combat inactivity Physical inactivity causes millions of deaths every year and is one of the five main risk factors for death in North America. We are currently faced with a real crisis in physical inactivity and obesity, which could lead to almost unimaginable costs in the future due to an epidemic of chronic illnesses. Fortunately, all society has to do to change this depressing scenario is to exercise more! An adult should do 30
to 60 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. However, this is easier said than done, especially for adults caught in a busy routine of work, children, caring for elderly parents, domestic chores, etc. So here are four tricks to help you succeed without turning your schedule upside down: 1. The idea is to get moving, not just to work out at a gym. So take every opportunity to shovel, dig,
scrub, walk, climb stairs, etc. 2. After supper, don’t sit down in front of the television before going for a walk or a bike ride with your partner, your children, the dog... 3. Make the most of your lunch break to walk, bike, swim or work out. 4. Weight bearing or impact exercises, which are great for bone health, should always have a place in your routine: jump rope, garden energetically, etc.

March 8, 2012 Farmer Appreciation Day lineup looks like a winner The nominations are now in and the selection process is being completed. Estevan and area’s Farm Family of the Year will be crowned and celebrated on March 8. And this will just be one highlight of the night that will feature a keynote address, speeches from a group of talented young people and some good spirited pure entertainment. Alf Tide, one of the co-ordinators for this year’s Farmer Appreciation Night, said that J.P. Gervais, of Farm Credit Canada will bring the dinner audience updated information on the ongoing challenges facing
European financial centres as well as their agricultural communities and how they relate to Canada’s producers and marketers. The current marketing challenges are being well documented and it is expected that Gervais will be digesting the information and putting the challenges and the outlook into an understandable format for those in attendance. Tide said that ticket sales for the dinner, which usually exceed 300, will no doubt be reach that level again this year. That is the capacity of the Days Inn Plaza which will be the host venue for the event.
The Mad Trapper will make an appearance too. He will provide the crazy entertainment part of the package. A character-driven comedian, the Trapper is able to pontificate on all kinds of
life’s misadventures as he takes on the subjects of marriage, raising children, politics and of course, trapping. The evening will include a little speech making by award-winning members of
the Benson 4-H Beef Club. 4-H club speakers have provided entertaining subject material of their own as part of the evening’s opening entertainment package for several years now and their efforts are always greeted with enthusiasm. The crowning of the Farm Family of the Year remains a big moment for the crowd as well and Tide said this year’s nominees were represented by a good selection of local producers to choose from, which made the final decision by an independent panel of judges a difficult task once again. This will be the 47th consecutive time the farm
family has been recognized by the community and the event’s major sponsors, the Estevan Chamber of Commerce and the Estevan Exhibition Association. Tide indicated earlier that invitations had been extended to Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud who has accepted the offer and will be in attendance along with Estevan MLA Doreen Eagles. “We’re happy to see that Mr. Bjornerud has accepted our invitation to attend, that adds something else to a pretty impressive program,” said Tide. The activities get underway around 6 p.m.

March 8, 2012 New funding for wheat research Today, Premier Brad Wall announced $10 million in new funding for wheat-related research over five years. This funding will go toward research projects that accelerate the development of wheat varieties and improve yield, quality and tolerance to disease and extreme weather conditions. “It’s time to put wheat back on top again,” Wall said. “Early varieties like Marquis made farming worthwhile in all but the most inhospitable parts
of the prairies. It allowed the prairies to become the breadbasket of the British Empire for the next 100 years. It’s time to recapture that leadership, so Saskatchewan can help feed a hungry planet.” Recently, wheat has become less profitable for producers to grow, relative to other options such as canola and pulses, two crops that weren’t even grown in any significant amount in western Canada 40 years ago. Yet increasing global demand for food makes it
crucial that new investments be made in wheat research. Wall made the announcement at the Saskatchewan Agriculture Wheat Summit in Saskatoon. The summit brings together industry stakeholders to discuss Canadian wheat research, variety development, production and marketing. “We have some of the best producers in the world in Saskatchewan and we are committed to investing in research to address their needs,” Agriculture Min-
ister Bob Bjornerud said. “This increased research funding will lead to new wheat varieties which will ultimately create long-term benefits for Saskatchewan farmers.” “Wheat has always been an important crop for Saskatchewan farmers and research is critical to our
future,” Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association Chair Gerrid Gust said. “We are very pleased with this new funding which will give farmers the opportunity to increase profits and help our industry remain competitive in the world marketplace.” The new wheat-related research funding will be
used to partner with public and private research organizations. This funding will be added to the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agriculture Development Fund. Since 2008, the ministry has invested nearly $62 million to support agriculture research in Saskatchewan.
I would like to acknowledge the contributions made by farmers, ranchers and the agriculture industry in this country. Agriculture plays a big role in the economy of our country and I salute all farmers and farm families for their dedication to the agriculture industry.

Preventing rollovers saves lives (NC)—Agriculture is one of Canada's most important industries. It is also among the most dangerous. Governed almost entirely by voluntary workplace standards, farming demands the diligence of its workers to keep the work environment safe and accident-free. According to the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association's latest national report, nearly 1,800 farming fatalities occurred from 1990 to 2005.The #1 cause? Machine rollovers, accounting for more than one-fifth of deadly injuries. The report sites statistics from the Canadian Agricultural Injury Surveillance Program (CAISP) in the section “Agricultural Injuries in Canada for 1990-2005”. “Too often, farmers underestimate the dangers associated with equipment rollovers and other accidents,” says James Savage, executive vice president at Western Financial Group. “We advise them to make sure their insurance will cover any injuries or property damage should an accident occur. Even more importantly, we encourage them to follow strict safety practices to prevent these accidents.” What safeguards can you put into place? 1. Equip your tractor with seat belts and rollover protec-
tion structures. If the tractor is old, have it retrofitted. 2. Maintain the brakes and electrical system. 3. Make sure the engine is off and the transmission is in neutral or park before doing repairs. 4. Never start a tractor by short-circuiting its ignition system. 5. Remain seated at all times while operating the vehicle. 6. Do not permit passengers unless the vehicle is designed to accommodate them. 7. Keep a safe distance from ditches and the sides of roads, and never operate or park machines on steep slopes. 8. Do not corner at exces-
sive speeds. 9. Respect the tractor's centre of gravity by adhering to manufacturer's recommendations concerning towing capacity and hitching points. Also monitor the terrain conditions; conditions such as thick mud and ice can compromise towing capacity. 10. When dragging a tree, log or other object, be alert in case the object becomes caught. 11. Never attach a tow rope or chain above the level of the draw pin. 12. Don't allow children to play near a vehicle. 13. Avoid long hours operating machinery and ensure that older farmers can safely perform needed tasks.
14. Keep a two-way communications system with you at all times.

Plant biotechnology explained (NC)—Plant breeding is a practice that's thousands of years old. People bred different plants to improve the quality of crops and increase the yields they produced. This
process was typically imprecise and labour-intensive. In the past few decades, plant breeders have been able to pinpoint beneficial traits in one plant and directly and pre-

cisely transfer them to another plant thanks to more modern breeding techniques such as biotechnology. This allows agriculture to quickly adapt to changing growing conditions and shifting consumer demands. Canadian farmers overwhelmingly choose to plant biotech crops—corn, soybeans and canola. Why? Well, first of all, they improve the bottom line for farmers. Corn yields, for example, have increased by more than one third since biotech corn varieties were first introduced. Biotech crop varieties can help control weeds, insects and diseases that typically cause huge damages to crops, all while helping protect the planet. “Canadian grain and oilseed producers are early
adopters of new technologies because there is a benefit to using them,” says Bob Bartley, a Manitoba farmer who has been farming for the better part of four decades and grows corn, soybeans, wheat, canola, and flax. “Biotech crops play an essential role in Canadian agriculture.” He adds: “Eighty percent of our corn is Bt, making it resistant to European corn borer. Prior to the introduction of genetically modified Bt varieties, we lost as much as 50 bushels per acre because of this pest.” This translates to about one-third of the crop that the insect pest resistant trait known as “Bt” has saved from being lost. Scientists are using biotechnology to produce foods with improved human

March 8, 2012 Farmers can grow more food with less land and water (NC)—Canadian farmers play an important role in putting food on the table for Canadians and people around the world. With the world's population growing every day, this is becoming more and more of a challenge. However, thanks to the help of pest control products and plant biotechnology, farmers are able to grow more food without increasing the amount of land they cultivate. In fact, without access to these tools, Canadian farmers would need to find 37 million more acres of farmland to grow the same amount of crops they do now. That's about the same amount of total land used for farming in Saskatchewan and four times the farmland in Ontario. The
Using plant biotechnology, scientists are developing drought-tolerant and water-efficient crops that will ease the pressure on the world's water supply and allow crops to grow in places that have been too dry. Ford loved soy • If you visualize an image of John Lennon, more likely than not you’ll see him in your mind’s eye wearing a pair of round spectacles. In July of 2007, one pair of those iconic glasses was sold at auction for a whopping $2 million. • You might be surprised to learn that early automobile magnate Henry Ford was a fan of soy. In the 1940s, the fabric used for the upholstery in some of his cars was made
from 25 percent soy. He even owned a soy-based suit of clothing that he would sometimes wear for media events. *** Thought for the Day: “Obstinacy is the result of the will forcing itself into the place of the intellect.” -- Arthur Schopenhauer
