Further outreach planned following We Day From me to we, students from Lampman and Grade 7 students at Hillcrest School in Estevan returned exhilarated from their trip to the We Day conference in Saskatoon last week. The conference was organized by Free the Children, an organization founded by brothers Marc and Craig Kielburger, in order to bring young people together to hear inspiring stories and empower them to create change in their communities. The conference was held Feb. 27 at Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, and Hillcrest student Morgan Barnard said she was particularly impressed by Molly Burke, one of the speakers at the conference who is visually impaired. “She spoke about how she was bullied when she was 14,� said Barnard. “I was just so inspired by the speech that I wanted to learn more about her, so I looked her up on the We Day site. She said that we all have a voice and that we should use it.� Burke was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa when she was four years old, and her vision has been declining steadily ever since. Grade 7 teacher Cat Costa said the class got very involved in the community leading up to the conference. Not everybody gets to go to We Day.. Students have to earn their attendance at the conference, and the class completed a can and bottle fundraiser leading up to the event. “In some ways, I see this as the climax of all of the fundraising that has happened from October until now,� said Costa. “In the opposite way, it will be interesting to see where students go from here.� Hillcrest School is now collecting pennies, fundraising for a clean-water initiative. Each student received a bag when they attended the conference and they are meant to be used for the We Create Change campaign. When the bags are filled with $25 worth of pennies, they are taken to the bank and the funds are forwarded to Free the Children. The money is intended to give someone who doesn’t have clean drinking water a life’s worth of it. The Grade 7 class had about three bags filled last week, and each of the other classrooms is collecting

pennies as well. Lampman Grade 11 student Elusha Baird and Grade 12 student Taylor Roy also attended We Day, along with 15 others from the school. Baird noted they heard from actors like Mia Farrow and Martin Sheen, who spoke at the conference about their views on social injustice. “It was really interesting to hear them speak about how they see the world,� said Elusha. “Hearing them talk about how we’re the next generation and that we’re the ones who have to choose to do something about our future in life, it was really inspiring.� For some, just being immersed in the crowd of 15,000 excited people was an experience itself. “After three months, all of a sudden we’re right in this room with 15,000 people. It seemed so far away but then we’re there,� said Jarod Buick, a Grade 7 sstudent tud at Hillccrest. res “It was cool o ssee all of these tto kkids id there who wa wanted to learn an and wanted to kn know more,� Ta Taylor added. “I “It definitely put a new pperspective on everytthing about bbeing more conscious of how much we spend and how much water we use. We take so many k education things for granted li like and water.� Taylor took a vow of silence by herself in November 2011, raising more than $2,000 for Free the Children. The Grade 7 Hillcrest class can opt in to the We are Silent day on April 18 as young people around the world take a vow of silence in order to raise awareness and funds for children around the world who are being silenced by the denial of basic human rights. Costa said she will be silent that day, and the students who wish to join may do so as well. Elusha quoted Sheen who said, “‘We are dreaming things that never were, and saying, why not?’ That quote really hit me because he believes we’re doing things that people never even dreamed of.� She noted students at Lampman also took part in the 30-hour famine on March 1, going until 6 a.m. the following morning.

We can’t say whatever we want Canadians just aren’t allowed to hate on one another anymore. Last week Weyburn’s Bill Whatcott was deemed by the Supreme Court of Canada to have violated our country’s hate-speech laws. Whatcott distributed some homophobic material about 10 years ago, and the country’s highest court voted 6-0 to overturn a Saskatchewan Court of Appeal decision and find he was operating outside of his right to worship and had spilled over into expressing hate and discrimination. Last I checked, a poll on the Regina Leader-Post’s website found 80 per cent agree with the decision to shut this guy up, so clearly I’m in the minority here. As a member of a free press, the rights to expression and speech are sacrosanct, but that doesn’t mean everything said or printed is beyond complaint. Libel laws prevent us from writing terrible or perhaps unfounded things about someone. That’s a clear limit on our ability to say harmful things about people, and we generally accept that as responsible adults. The same now goes for people expressing themselves in a hateful way in everyday life. Whatcott can no longer use his Christianity as a defence to spread hate. It’s great when hate isn’t spread,

This isn’t a matter of religious freedom, because Whatcott can continue to believe in all the misguided ideas he wants. It is a matter of the freedom to express oneself without harming anyone. Obviously, we can’t express ourselves by attacking randoms on the street. We don’t have to be nice to one another. We don’t have to get along. But putting limits on hate is a slippery slope the same way censorship is. We should all have the right to feel safe. Not everybody needs to accept us for who we are. People don’t need to like skinny boys with glasses, but if my neighbours were passing out literature suggesting I had no business living near them or that skinny boys with glasses were a danger to children, I would accept that as just a couple of strangers with a bizarre view of the world. Not everybody has to like skinny boys with glasses, and we are OK with

that. I understand the pamphlets Whatcott enjoys distributing suggest gay and lesbian people sexually abuse children. It sounds like Whatcott’s experience with gay people is woefully limited. Maybe he should just have a coffee with one of the people he claims is a child abuser and just get to know them. Whatcott’s ideas are disgusting, outdated and juvenile, but he is more than welcome to view the world in such a shallow way. His pamphlets should be properly recycled without given a thought. Thankfully Estevan is too small a community for it to be a city targeted by Whatcott’s mailings. I have no plans to renounce any friendship with my gay friends and don’t find his argument very persuasive. It’s unfortunate that Whatcott chooses to hate people, when he can choose to accept everyone and live happily. It’s an excellent way to get through the day, not having to worry about sexual orientation, colour or religion. As my grandfather says when my grandmother wants to stomp a spider in their house, “He’s just a little guy trying to make his way in the world.” Gay, straight or something in between, we’re all just like that spider, trying to make our way in the world.

Could you spend 500 days on a two-man mission to Mars?

A private group is working its way toward sending two people on a mission to fly around Mars in 2018. The journey there and back will take about 500 days, and the plan is to have two travellers take the trip in a small living space that allows for very limited personal space. They are looking for volunteers, and while I don’t plan on putting my name forward, I am curious by the prospect of such seclusion for so long. It would take an extremely special person to come back to Earth once they eventually do come back. I like to think I am that special person. I can handle a little alone time in a place where, as I learned from the Alien film franchise, nobody can hear you scream. I have some experience with prolonged time in a small capsule with one person. By prolonged, I mean 16 to 18 hours instead of 500 days, but how different can that be? It was a drive down to Myrtle Beach and after that first trip down, we had to drive all the way back about three days later. Thirty-five hours in a car with one person over four days could be a problem, but I came out the other end in flying colours. I’ve also spent three months travelling with one person. Sure we met other people and moved around, which was really all we did, but seeing the same person everyday, knowing that tomorrow you’d be sitting across from each other on a train once again for six hours, it can be a little agitating. Again, I had no problems, and got through barely thinking about what would happen if I just turned around in the busy street and walked away, completing the trip myself. Both of those examples pale in comparison to this proposed trip to the Red Planet. It would definitely take a special kind of someone, but I think I have the building blocks. — Jordan Baker

No. Definitely not. Not in a million years. Nuh uh. Hard pass. If someone walked up to me on the streets and said, “You look perfect for the year-anda-half-long mission to Mars I’m planning. Are you interested?” I would initially laugh, and then decline the invitation when I realized they were serious. First, spending 500 days away from home sounds horrible. I can’t imagine not seeing the people I love for that long. Plus, that’s a long time to check out from normal life. A lot changes in the world in 500 days. Thinking about 500 days ago from right now, a lot of significant things have changed. I would also be super bored in space. What is there to do? It’s not like I can take a giant library with me for things to read. I guess I could update my library, but after awhile, I think I’d get tired of reading. And of writing. And watching TV. And going online. Being confined to a small space for that long would be incredibly limiting. I would be so stir crazy from being locked up. And it’s not like you can take a stroll outside the aircraft to stretch your legs. You’re in space. Anything outside your little spaceship will kill you. There’s also that whole issue of spending 500 days with one person. I won’t lie, I am not always pleasant to be around. If I were stuck with another girl, after our initial bonding, we’d probably get super frustrated with each other. Then we’d get catty. Then we’d cry. It would suck. With a guy, I’d be super awkward (always) and I wouldn’t know what to talk about, and it’s not like I could avoid him. So no, I wouldn’t survive a 500-day mission to Mars. It’s dangerous, lengthy and I’d be brutal company. The aircraft won’t even touch down on the Red Planet anyway, which would be insanely painful. I imagine that would be like flying to Hawaii, circling around over the islands, and returning home. Just the trip would be longer. Gross. – Tonaya Marr

Canada should stay in NATO to stay out of wars J.L. Granatstein may be a distinguished research fellow of the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute, but in his March 4 opinion piece in the National Post, he is just plain wrong. In a piece entitled, The End of NATO? he says, “The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has been the most successful military alliance of the modern era. Set up in 1949 to counter Josef Stalin’s threat to Western Europe, NATO won the Cold War some four decades later without firing a shot. Although NATO had accomplished its goal of defeating the Soviets by the early 1990s, its existence didn’t end.� He goes on to talk about Europeans not wanting to pay for their own defence, and concludes, “If such an analysis says strongly that we need NATO to protect our national interests, so be it. But Canadians must ask the question. The answer might be that NATO has served its purpose well in the past, but is no longer needed as we head into a new world with different challenges. It’s time to raise the question.� For an obviously learned man, he apparently forgot about history repeating itself. For as long as records go back, Western Europe was constantly at war with itself. Since the creation of NATO, that track record has ended. For about a millennia, and quite likely longer, the French and the English have been at war with each other. A bunch of Frenchmen known as Normans conquered England in 1066 in the Battle of Hast-

They even fought a war that would become known as the Hundred Years War, even though it lasted longer than that. In 1815, Napoleon finally got put into his place by the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo. The French seemed to fight everyone - the English, the Russians, and oh, yes, the Germans. They spent a lot of time fighting the Germans. Every few decades they would go several rounds with the Germans. The First World War was caused in part by hangover of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. It only took a crown prince in the Balkans getting a bullet in the jugular to set off the French and the Germans in 1914. That, in turn, led to Canadians slogging through the trenches of the Somme, Ypres and Vimy Ridge. While NATO kept the Communists out of Western Europe, it also kept the Western European nations from fighting one another. You tend not to shoot at your buddy if you both are in the same command structure and train together. What would a militarized-against-itself Western Europe look like? For one, there

would be an awful lot more nukes, beyond what the British and French already have. The world may be worried about Iran getting nukes and North Korea using the few they have, but imagine if Germany felt it needed nukes to point at the French. Remember, the French, who they invaded twice in the last century and shed millions of lives on both sides in the effort? Some Germans might consider them good targets. As one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, with a huge number of existing nuclear reactors, Germany could become an atomic power in the blink of an eye. Nuclear weapons are the great equalizer. Your nation may be small, like the Netherlands, but a handful of nukes can level the playing field - literally. And since the Dutch and Danish have been marched across in the not too distant past, maybe they would want some nukes, too. Don’t forget the Norwegians, or the Poles. Poland got trampled on the last time out. With the exception of the Turks and the Greeks, NATO has done a stupendous job in keeping European members from going to war with one another. They also pacified the Warsaw Pact. Some, like Granatstein, may question the continued value of NATO. If it keeps us out of future European wars (a paradoxical result, since our allegiance guarantees our involvement should one start), then it is worth every penny. Just be yourself (corny, I know) A little while ago, I was telling a friend at school that I had been using all of my spare time to watch The Vampire Diaries on Netflix. I was explaining that I was obsessed with the characters, and was losing hours of precious sleep because I just wanted to watch show after show after show. Another classmate was listening in, and when my rant had wound down, she looked at me and said “You’re so freakin’ weird... I love how you own it.� Now, personally I don’t believe that watching The Vampire Diaries is weird at all. There are a lot of people who are as obsessed as I am, though many of them are probably 17-years-old. But I was incredibly flattered by that terrific (and maybe a little backhanded) compliment. How nice is it to hear that someone appreciates the fact that you’re different and true to yourself? In my early years at the Estevan Comprehensive School (Grade 9-10), I was deathly afraid of being myself. As a brace-faced, Harry Potter-loving book nerd, I didn’t feel comfortable revealing my interests to my classmates or teammates. I was pretty sure they’d laugh in my face when I admitted that I’d rather read fan fiction online than watch TV, or that I had to look up most of the things they

talked about on Urban Dictionary after school (“Oh ... that haha. I thought you were talking about something else ...�) I honestly thought I was destined to wander the world alone, because no one would ever accept me being me. So I was weak and blended in as best I could. The last few years of high school drew me out of my shell, slowly. I opened up and shared a few of my quirks, and for the most part, the true friends I had made were happy to accept me; plus, most of them were pretty weird too. Of course, there were setbacks, including a boyfriend in Grade 12 who was happy to ridicule the aspects of my personality I was ashamed of. In a couple of months, it’ll be four years since I graduated from high school. I’ve definitely shed the walls I put up to hide who I am. I’ve realized that being quirky is one of the best things about me, something the 14-year-old version of myself would never have believed. For example, I usually suck at talking to people my own age. I think it’s because I’m pretty brutal at small talk.

But, lucky for me, I’ve found a career that harnesses what I’m good at: talking to people older or those younger than I am, and doing interviews, which are the furthest thing from small talk. Being self-aware and comfortable with me has made this a strength that I work at every day. What I’m getting at – in the midst of my self-esteem high – is that it’s all right

Lalonde said the proposal for the town is for an outdoor pool with a zero entrance, similar to the one at the RM of Estevan Aquatic Centre. She noted the current pool in Bienfait was built in 1975. “It’s pretty much lived its life now already,� said Lalonde. “I took swimming lessons there, so I can only imagine.� She said her son took swimming lessons in Estevan but was too short even for the shallow end of that pool. “I think the new pool will be a good opportunity for the residents,� she added.

Lalonde said they have had people logging in from all over, putting their numbers toward the community. If Bienfait collects the grand prize, the $10,000 will go toward the town’s pool fund. The pool is a project many of the town’s residents are looking forward to. Lalonde noted swimming lessons are difficult to get into, so having an option in their own town would be a big improvement. “An outdoor pool is really nice,� added Lalonde. “Estevan hasn’t had one since Woodlawn’s closed down many years ago. I think an outdoor pool would be a benefit to the whole area.� Other communities taking part in the challenge include Lampman, Oxbow and Weyburn. As of Tuesday morning, Bienfait was ranked seventh.

Canada to chair Holocaust Remembrance Alliance National BERLIN - Canada has assumed the chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, a body comprised of government officials and experts from 31 nations. The alliance is devoted to fostering and promoting Holocaust education, remembrance and research around the world. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney attended a ceremony in Berlin today where Belgium handed over the chairmanship to Canada, which will now hold that position until March 2014.

Each year, the alliance nominates a member country to assume leadership of the organization. Canada became actively involved with the alliance in 2007 and became a full member in 2009. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Conference will be held in Toronto in October 2013. *** OTTAWA - The Harper government’s plan to buy the oft-maligned F-35 fighter is expected to face another blow with a series of deep spending cuts about to unfold in the

United States. The cuts, known as sequestration, could affect “specific military procurements� in this country, Peter MacKay told a breakfast event at the Economic Club of Canada. “It could slow down the production line of certain aircraft, of certain procurements we have a direct interest in. These are the realities.� It’s the fi rst time a federal cabinet minister has acknowledged what the defence industry has been saying for months, that the stealth fighter program faces yet another

major restructuring. U.S. lawmakers consider the long-delayed and costly F-35 program a prime target for the budget axe.
