Youth return reflective from first look at Haiti A group of Macoun youth returned last week from a mission to Haiti energized but tired, and with a new perspective on the conditions under which many live. The Macoun Evangelical Church organized another trip to the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, this time taking eight of the congregation’s teens, aged 15 to 18. “We all had the thought in our minds that it was an impoverished country, but actually seeing that probably impacted us more so than just stories,” said Karissa Gustafson. The youth ran programming at the schools and churches and also attended one of the orphanages. “We all did the program together, but we each had a different leadership part in it,” said Selena Wiebe. Selecting what each individual would do was a matter of looking inside and deciding what was best for oneself. “Whatever we felt we wanted to do, or we could lead in the way we thought God wanted us to, that’s what we would choose,” added Selena. They organized puppet shows and sang songs with the Haitian children. “The puppets we took into the audience to kind of mingle with the kids,” said Michael Wiebe. The songs were sung in both English and Creole, with the children singing to them in their native tongue. They would be dealing with anywhere from 100 to 350 children at any given time, but the children would be

split up too, so they dealt with smaller groups from 15 to 20 as well. “You need to empathize with them when you’re there, but it’s hard to put yourself in their shoes because at the same time you’re seeing them and how they live, we live in this First World country where we can never be put in their shoes exactly,” said Karissa. “It’s a humbling experience.” The Macoun group was stationed in the Central Plateau of Haiti, about three hours from Port-au-Prince. They stayed in a compound where the water ran sometimes and a generator would kick on in the evening. They said the food was an adjustment because they were eating rice everyday, but added that the living conditions weren’t bad. The group was in Haiti from Feb. 16 to 27, returning in the early morning hours on Tuesday last week. All who went agree that the experience was a positive one, and as long as the adults continue to keep the trip open to the youth, they are all looking forward to the next opportunity to head down for a second mission. “There are different things that people tell you about Haiti, but it’s a lot different when you’re there for yourself and you see it for yourself,” said Selena. “It’s really nice to see the way that God actually works through these kids.” “It makes you realize the things we take for granted,” added Karissa. “Having power all day, or having power at all, and just the little things that if we went every day without,

it would change our lives completely, but you still make it through without them. It prioritizes things.” Michael added that since his return a friend of his came to school with soccer balls, and they hold an entirely new significance now. “When you’re (in Haiti), when they see a ball, they go crazy. So when I have it in my hand, it’s like I’m back in Haiti and where are the kids to throw it around with?” he said. Little things like having a ball to throw or kick around is a novelty for the children they were dealing with. “During the days that we did do our program, when there was any time that we could go play with them outside, or (they asked) can we have a picture with you, they all just wanted to do it so badly. They’d come to grab your hand and ... they’re like little kids here. They wanted to show you how good they were at jumping rope, so they each wanted their try,” said Karissa. In the area where the Macoun youth stayed, they were don’t get many visitors, and Darlene Bowen, one of the adults on the trip, noted that they would even more rarely have teenagers visiting them, so there was quite a bit of excitement when the teens arrived on day one. Michael also recalled their experience with Pastor Jack, a Haitian with a church in the area. His house had been partially destroyed when a road was being built right next to it. “We decided to give the church some money,

and also him so he could help repair his house. We gave him $300 and the smile on his face when he got it (said) ‘We’ve been blessed, but I don’t know what to do now.’ He was speechless for awhile.” The girls also left all of their clothes and shoes in Haiti for the girls there. They returned to Canada on Feb. 27 in flip-flops. There aren’t any details ironed out on a further mission to Haiti for the Macoun church, but if more trips are in the works, they’ve added to the numbers of whom will sign up to go down. Along with the eight young people who went this time, they have more friends who are ready to go for the next trip.

North Korea is very interesting, maybe the most interesting country in the world, which makes Kim Jong Un the most interesting man in the world. The kid is a few years older than I, and he’s running a nation that, if not hated by most of the world, is at the very least scorned because of the way the leadership treats its citizens. For any concerns people may have about this young person being in charge of possibly the most unstable regime on the planet, consider this: he’s not even 30 yet. Things have started well enough for his term in power, after the North Koreans agreed to accept a few hundred thousand tons of food in exchange for suspending their uranium enrichment program and allowing International Atomic Energy inspectors to monitor exactly what they’ve been up to with that nuclear program. He’s only got four years on me, so he probably really just wants to watch basketball, like his old man, and talk to his friends on Facebook. He probably hates that he has all this responsibility thrown in his lap. He has to run a country, and it’s North Korea. He probably doesn’t let on when he’s hanging out with his advisers and military leaders that he’d rather be at home playing video games than talking to them about the status of the troops and overseeing which

His ears probably prick up when they mention war games out at sea, but then he’ll realize it’s just a bunch of nautical mumbo-jumbo and has nothing to do with hunting down German U-boats in the Second World War. He would definitely rather spend his days playing Call of Duty than running North Korea. I know this because I understand 20-year-olds as well as anybody, and running that country is just not on the radar of any of us. Kim Jong Un knows full well he isn’t prepared to oversee a country and that he’s just the face of power until he actually has the capacity to make decisions. He still has all these obligations to talk to people who will tell him what to do, and he has to get his state photographer to shoot photos of him with the generals. He’s just a middle man right now. They make decisions, tell him the verdict and then he signs his name to make it official, but he’s still stuck play-

ing the part of supreme leader without any of the power that a title like that should come with. That sounds like a terrible job. Sure he’s his own boss, but it’s not like he started up a hipster design firm with an office in a loft and hired all of his buddies. He’s still responsible for North Korea, and he’s been outside the country plenty in his young age. He may never leave again, but he knows how the rest of the world operates and knows there are much better countries to run. I see comments about how corrupt Kim Jong Un is because like father like son, but think about it from the perspective that he’s 28 years old. He wants to hit the Pyongyang bars and go clubbing. He probably has no interest in beginning a global incident. That would just mean more work for him. He doesn’t want to stay at the office late on a Friday night. He definitely doesn’t want to have to go back in on Saturday morning. That’s what his job would mean if he started to get aggressive with his southern brothers. He doesn’t want to give himself any more work. He knows life would be easier if he just keeps quiet, and North Korea will probably be a quiet country for a long time.

How will future generations eat? When we start looking toward the future, it appears to be a place with a lot of rather ominous shadows cast over it. In this case the future I am thinking about is not immediate. In fact I am thinking beyond the years I am likely to witness first-hand. While I have fewer than 50 years ahead of me under the best of possible circumstances, I do have children, and hopefully one day grandchildren who will see the start of the next century and beyond. Of course that will only be possible if we, as a global society, come to terms with some massive issues looming on the horizon. On top of the list will be how we grow enough food for our increasing population. There are a couple of constants we know for sure. One is that the world population is growing, and there does not appear to be any controlling that, at least within the foreseeable future. Any efforts in that regard come with massive moral and ethical debates I am not even willing to wade into. The second aspect is those new mouths will need to be fed. And that comes back to farmers. There is finite land to produce food on, a land base which is actually likely to shrink from urban sprawl, desertification, and similar things which are taking acres

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist out of production. Urban sprawl is even happening here in Saskatchewan. Take the city of Yorkton. It has purchased land around the city to facilitate growth in the near future. The land is currently farm land, and while the few quarters in isolation may not seem like the loss of a lot of land to farming, when you multiply it by all the cities around the world, the impact becomes significant rather quickly. Technology is helping to offset land loss and other factors by increasing production. The move to zero-tillage systems, using a better package of crop nutrients, and utilizing precision farming techniques has meant more production from the same acres, at least here in North America. The same tech can transfer to a broader world, of course, and in time it will have to. But that will not happen quickly. There is the issue of the money needed to make that transfer, however, and in time

it will have to happen. Of course, there is also the backlash against high-tech farming. In spite of most of us recognizing the need for more food, with generally full fridges in the developed world, we can stand back and have the debate over whether we should use intensive techniques. Farmers here could grow food for North America using less technology, but to feed a larger world that will not cut it. And the basic issue of food production has other hurdles it will need to overcome. Climate change will mean dramatic changes to what grows where in this world, and how that impacts food production a half-century from now can only be vaguely guessed at. Resources too, are finite. It is a case of when, and not if, oil and gas reserves run out. We assume science will solve that question, but steps in reducing reliance on oil and gas are currently small at best. Add in a reluctance to make any serious effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and agriculture faces a lot of unknowns in the decades ahead. The issues are something world leaders need to start seriously addressing now for the sake of our children, grandchildren, and generations beyond.

Driving etiquette: turning lanes I’m guilty of driving in the right lane even when I’m not going to turn, because turning isn’t always required and I just see it as good forward planning. Especially when I’m driving in Regina and I don’t always know where the traffic is going to be, and if I’m going to be able to get into the lane I need. Consider that today while driving, I nearly side-swiped the crap out of a Cavalier. Fortunately he dodged me like a professional, but things could have ended a lot worse. So I generally try to get into the correct lane right

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me off the top. But every time I drive in the right lane, there always seems to be that one, irate hockey mom 15 minutes late to start supper who’s behind me, impatiently smashing her

open palm into the steering wheel. The look on her face suggests that I am keeping the light from changing, and am responsible for her being unable to get into the Walmart parking lot. She always glares at me while

I sit trembling, meeting her icy gaze in my rear view mirror. I usually lock my car doors, in the off chance that she wants to get out and confront me face-to-face. As you can see, it’s a very terrifying time, but I always find myself in this situation. I just want so badly to save myself time and be efficient that I ignore the fact that some people out there just need to stop at Sobeys to pick up a jar of Ragu and I am ruining their lives. At this point, it’s really turned into my personal mission in life. I don’t see it

as a form of torture or anything, so much as a training exercise in patience. These drivers should thank me, because I routinely force them to sit in their Land Rovers and wait longer than they knew was possible. The small trials of patience in their lives following their encounters with me seem that much more relaxing and within their control. I should also point out that this is best done when I’m not driving my own vehicle. With my job in Regina, I drive vehicles that are not my own every day. This makes it great

for me to escape without people being able to track my licence plate. It also helps prevent them from recognizing me later. So you are welcome, angry right turners. And eternally more patient. Adjudicators unveiled for Music Festival The Estevan and District Music Festival is back for another year beginning on Tuesday. The festival welcomes participants across the southeast to compete in a number of musical disciplines, with this year’s categories falling into band, from March 13 to 16; piano from March 18 to 23; and voice and speech performances from March 25 to 29. The final concert and awards gala will be held April 3 at 7 p.m. at the Estevan Comprehensive School. Along with the performers, several adjudicators will be on hand for all performances. Adjudicators for the band performances will be Troy Linsley and Dennis Weist. Linsley holds a bachelor of music degree from the University of Saskatchewan where he was fortunate to study with Marvin Eckroth, professor emeritus. Active as a chamber musician, he has performed with the Saskatoon Symphony, the Saskatoon Saxophone Quartet and performed at local, provincial and national festival and conferences. Linsley teaches saxophone at the U of S and maintains a private studio. Active as a clinician and adjudicator, he is often called upon for saxophone and band clinic workshops around the province. For the past several year Linsley has co-ordinated the Saskatchewan Band Association’s summer band camp program in Saskatoon. His wife Marie plays bassoon with the Saskatoon Symphony, and together they have two boys, Nathaniel and Samuel.

This year will mark the first he has played piano in the local music festival when he performs Sailor’s Dance with his six-year-old son Nathaniel. Weist is from Regina, where he began his band studies at the the age of nine. Over the years he has performed in numerous bands in the Regina area including the Intercollegiate Orchestra and the Regina Symphony Orchestra. He graduated from the University of Regina in 1972 with a degree in music education. He worked as an elementary band director and classroom music specialist in Saskatchewan and Alberta from 1972 to 2002. From 1979 to 2002, he taught in Regina Catholic schools. Weist is a member of the Saskatchewan Band Association and a former board member of the Saskatchewan Music Educators’ Association. Weist works as a piano tuner and technician in Regina and area. He has recently expanded the business into a dealership for Hailun pianos. Weist sings in the Regina Philharmonic Chorus and directs the Queen City Brass Band. Margot Sim is one of two who will be adjudicating the piano and vocal portions of the music festival. Sim began her musical training in Winnipeg, achieving performance diplomas in voice (ARCT, LMM); piano (ARCT); organ (ARCT); and recorder (AMM). Furthering her studies at the University of Toronto with Mary Morrison, she received her bachelor of arts and diploma in operatic performance with distinction. As a soloist,

Sim has performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Innis College Theatre and the Winnipeg Mennonite Theatre. Sim has also worked with the Canadian Opera Company and the Canadian Opera Company Children’s Chorus. As a Young Artist Tour winner, she performed in recitals across Western Canada with pianist Angela Cheng. An experience teacher, adjudicator and clinician, Sim is currently a voice instructor at the Canadian Mennonite University and she is organist/ choir director at Grace Bible Church. Her students include examination medallists and her choir has been an award winner in the CBC National Choral Competition. She said she loves adjudicating because of the opportunity it gives to encourage musicians of all ages and levels of ability. In her spare time, Sim tries to keep one step ahead of her three daughters. Along with Sim, Lore Ruschiensky of Regina, who began her piano studies in Eston will be adjudicating piano and voice classes. She studied with Dorothy Bee in Regina for her teacher’s associate in piano and received her associate in piano performance while studying in Ottawa. Ruschiensky has continued to pursue further studies in music in piano pedagogy as well as general music studies at the conservatory and university level. She has had the privilege of attending professional development conferences provincially, nationally and internationally on a regular basis.

Should all anniversaries be recognized and celebrated?

He She He She Said

The Oreo turned 100 years old on March 6. It certainly has lasting power and seems to be plugging along just fine in this economy, with a factory in Montreal producing one billion individual Oreos each year. There are so many anniversaries that we could potentially celebrate this year, like any year, that it’s probably easier to just ignore them all. Unless you’re part of the Royal Family or have a Sunday brunch date with the Queen pencilled onto your calendar each week, there probably isn’t much sense in celebrating the Queen’s 60th year as Canada’s head of state and oldest living member of the House of Windsor. Very few of us have worked for Oreo, or whichever company owns the brand, so we have no ties to the black and white cookie that gave its name to one of the forward lines from the first Mighty Ducks movie. For 30 years, Elvis Presley’s Graceland has been open to the public. If you’re a Broadway buff, you may well wish to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Grease. Now it’s only Broadway’s 13th longest running show, but at the time of its closing in New York in 1980, it was the longest running show in Broadway’s history. It’s the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. That involved Brits and Americans more than it did Canadians, but I see the merit of recognizing the historical significance of that event. Let’s just wait another 100 years to check back in. We can skip the 250th marker. Let’s start being a little more choosy about which special days really are special.

I don’t really have a problem with the celebrating stupid things. Consider that I have celebrated it being a Wednesday, and not crashing my car into things on occasions when I just needed a reason to celebrate. So I’m totally fine with celebrating anniversaries of things like Oreos. For one, Oreos are awesome. They’ve been around for 100 years, so they have to be good. And even if they’d only been around for 15 years, Oreos would be worth

celebrating. I’m pretty sure we are conditioned to celebrate stupid things right from birth. When explaining how old their children are for the first two years, parents always seem to say things like “16 months,” and “Oh, she’ll be 20 months next week.” No one ever says “He’s something like one year, give or take a couple of months.” So right from the beginning, we’re told that counting insignificant things is important. Then we all turn into teenagers and suddenly the most important anniversary we celebrate is the number of months we’ve been in a relationship. Celebrating dating three months seems pretty important when you’re 14, but it’s not really something that continues into the rest of your life. Later in life, it’s strictly about years ... and even then, you may not remember the actual date. So there’s nothing wrong with caring that North America’s favourite cookie has reached an age that many of us will never see because of obesity. Obesity because of eating aforementioned cookies. And it only would have made sense to celebrate the birthday of Oreos by eating them until you throw up. I approve.

Winning on the ranch by Norm Park It’s a sprawling operation that has a firm grip on its owners, just because they love it so much. It’s not ever easy to operate a commercial cow/ calf ranch with all its variances without a lot of help , commitment and some pure love of what you’re doing. The Ross family has that in abundance, and for their dedication to this world of raising beef on the hoof, they were presented with one of the coveted awards southeast Saskatchewan can bestow on one of its own, the Farm Family of the Year Award. The Ross family, owners and operators of the Ross L-7 Ranch that is headquartered on the home front just a hop-skip-jump from the United States border south of Estevan, encompasses over 3,000 acres that is familyowned and another 8,000 leased acres throughout the region. This is not just a flyby-night operation either, it is in it’s fourth generation now and expectations are that it will continue along that family vein for some time to come. The main cast of characters is headed up by Brian and Rosalie Ross along with Chad and Crystal Ross and their children Cassidy and Carlee and not to forget Jeremy and Carol and their

Bringing the herd closer to home in the fall and taking them our to pastures every spring is a big job but one that is filled with panoramic views from the hilltops. kids Jaycee, Sydney and Hugh. Then there is Brian’s mother Helen. There are plenty more in the family compact and they all participate and contribute at various times, many of them “coming home” from other parts of the country to enjoy a working and socializing experience.

Sometimes those trips might involve a round-up or a camp out or maybe a little friendly roping and penning competition to maintain the edge and remind them all of their roots. “Our only regret is that Dad (Cyril) isn’t with us to share the moment, but Mom is pretty excited about this

award,” said Brian. The Rosses run a herd of between 600 and 700 cows over that vast acreage that spreads from Torquay to Frobisher and it, of course, comes with all the expected challenges. “We’ve come through so much this past decade, as a family and as an industry,

including the BSE crisis,” said Brian, referring to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow) disease that surfaced in Alberta in May of 2003 which led to a host of countries shutting down their borders to Canadian cattle and beef until just recently. “But right now it’s looking good for the industry. We’re getting markets back, the prices are good and we’ve just come through a pretty good winter,” said Brian. “Good hay, lots of grass ... we’re just wondering now when is the next wreck coming?” he added with a laugh. “Isn’t that how it is in this business, in this province. Things get going well, so you wonder when the dark side is gonna hit.” Like others, the Ross family encountered some issues with last spring’s floods, but not to the degree that so many others felt. Brian said the freak May snowstorm did more damage to the herd than any flood waters could do later on.They do late calving, starting just around the time the storm struck, so they lost a few head. “We have a late calving season because we bale graze over winter, so we don’t want or need early calving,” said Brian. So while they appreciate their beef, the Ross clan absolutely loves their horses and for good reason. These animals are pretty well part of the family. “I would hate to have to sort cattle without horses. I don’t know how we could do it,” said Brian.

They are proud of their equine family members and make sure they get quality and train them well and when it comes time for a little recreation, you can be sure the Rosses will be saddled up doing it. “We do penning and roping for recreation, our social life revolves around the competition and even the little ones, when it comes time for work, they’re there. The young girls worked around the chutes just the other day,” Brian said, referring to Chad’s daughters. “When you’re working hard, all day, you need two horses anyway. I don’t like to admit it, but I have five horses myself. They get to rest, we don’t,” he said with a chuckle. When it comes time for branding or a fall round-up, working the Ross L-7 herds can become a pretty intense and impressive undertaking. In the spirit of the ranching world, they usually share cowboy and cowgirl time with other ranchers in the district. The history of the Ross operation goes back to 1906 when Lester George Ross and his two brothers from southwest Minnesota arrived in southern Saskatchewan, the province that had just been formed. They set up a mixed farming operation, something that was quite normal in those days. Lester had a farming background, but he liked the idea of mixed farming and with affordable land ready to be worked, it was a good fit. Continued on Page 9

The idea that he could earn some cash breaking (training) horses for the RCMP appealed to him. He met and married Nellie, they raised a family and Brian’s father, Cyril was a product of that union with Creighton and Donald (twins) and Jessie coming along later. “Government programs of the day promoted mixed farming so that’s what grandpa Lester did and so did Dad. Even the marginal land was put into crops,” said Brian. “We know now that was a mistake because they lost what little quality there was in the land but after awhile we all learned from that and the operation grew in strength with cattle,” said Brian. “Dad’s heart was in cattle, especially as he got older we started the switch. Our operation became one of the first to do artificial insemination, it began on this ranch and we were one of the first to bring in a purebred breed, Simmentals. In fact we went purebred for a few years but it was highly labour intensive and as our kids started to get older, we realized we had to get into more general commercial operations and to get ahead in that game you need some numbers, so we expanded the herd.” But by going that route, they also reduced the work load. New techniques such as the bale grazing, even during the tough winter of 2010, has proved worthwhile. “As long as the cattle have windbreaks, and a good bush or tree line will provide that, you can bale graze through the season and the cows contribute to the soil value and as they wander around the top soil improves and therefore the productivity of the land improves with the good natural fertilizer,” Brian said. Now he finds that being out of the political realm of the business, and with the

business end being taken over ever more gradually but continually by the next generation, he’s even had time for a quick trip south. “We took a trip with Rosalie’s sisters, for a week. Squeezing a bit of sand between my toes on a warm beach in February was a new experience for me.” Chad and Crystal are now the 4-H leaders, Jeremy and Carol and kids arrive for the roundups, and branding and penning competitions,

and all the other work and fun times. “All the daughters-inlaws work from a horse just as well as the guys,” said Brian. Stuff like that doesn’t happen by accident. Cowboys and cowgirls have a tendency to find one another, it seems. Their kids are naturals in the saddles and among the herds too. The Ross L-7 legacy appears to be pretty safe for another few decades at least.

Bill Granger’s caramel chicken

After many requests, I have decided to share this recipe. I can’t take any credit for finding it, however, indulging in it and enjoying every bite, I can!! This recipe comes from one of my favourite Australian chefs, Bill Granger. I have all of his cookbooks and while living in Australia would frequent his restaurant as often as possible. The recipe is for Caramel Chicken and it is simply delicious. Trust me on this one, your family and friends will love it and it’s a great recipe that you can whip up in no time. This dish allows you to dazzle your guests with your culinary skills and is great as leftovers or for school lunches. Caramel Chicken (Bill Granger) 8 Chicken thigh fillets, skinless chopped in half 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life 1 Red onion, sliced 3 Garlic cloves, sliced Freshly ground black pepper 60ml (1/4 cup) Dark soy sauce (important that the soy sauce is dark) 115g (1/2 cup) Brown sugar 60ml (1/4 cup) Fish sauce Method: Place the chicken and oil in a large bowl and toss to combine. Heat a large frying pan over a high heat until hot. Add the chicken, in two batches, and cook for two minutes on one side until lightly brown, turn and cook for another minute. Remove from the pan. Reduce the heat to medium and add a little extra oil if needed. Add the

onion and garlic and cook for five minutes, stirring occasionally. Return the chicken to the pan, sprinkle liberally with black pepper, add the soy sauce and stir to combine. Cover the pan, reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Increase the heat to high, add the sugar and stir to combine. Cook uncovered for three to four minutes, or until the sauce is rich, dark and syrupy.Add the fish sauce and stir to combine. Place on a serving dish and serve on a bed of steamed rice with your green vegetables draped over top. Serve with steamed rice and my favourite, roasted or sautéed asparagus and you have a meal that will be requested time and time again. I hope you enjoy. 1 cup pecan halves, toasted and cooled 20 gingersnap cookies 2 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons margarine, melted, substitute butter 3 pints vanilla ice cream 2 tablespoons pumpkin-pie spice 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Reserve 16 pecan halves for garnish. In food processor with knife blade attached, blend remaining pecan halves with gingersnaps and sugar until mixture is finely ground. 2. In 9-inch springform pan, with fork, stir cookie mixture and melted margarine or butter until moistened. With hand, press mixture onto bottom of pan. 3. Bake crust 8 minutes. Cool completely on wire rack. 4. Let ice cream soften on counter 20 minutes. In large bowl, mix softened ice cream and pumpkin-pie spice until blended; spread over crust. Place pecan halves around top edge of torte. Cover torte and freeze at least overnight or up to 1 week. 5. To serve, let frozen torte stand at room temperature about 15 minutes for easier slicing. Math failure as a child leads to poor decisions as an adult Last weekend Katrina was studying her math on her computer, using a program that was recommended by the school. I’ve heard high praise for it, but have not yet ponied up the $80 subscription to allow her full access to the site. “Daddy, why do I need to know math?” my sevenyear-old asked. “I use math every day,” I told her, explaining that math is important for photography. As an example, I had her turn on all six pot lights in the family room. For six lights, I said, I have my camera set this way. But if you turn off three lights, then there is half the light in the room, and I have to change my camera one F-stop. At the beginning of the school year, Katrina was struggling with very basic arithmetic. She tried to explain it to me, parroting the new math curriculum that made no sense to me whatsoever. The heck with that noise. We pulled out an abacus that my soon-to-be 16-year-old sister used, and we were off to the races. If billions of Asian people used an abacus for math, so can my daughter. It worked. Now she’s getting high marks on her homework. We’ll see how her most recent test pans out. No calculators for my kid just yet. My friend Douglas, who happens to be pretty astute about numbers himself, rails on about the lack of math skills among adults

I was looking at hot tubs. I was curious how much they cost. EVERY vendor was advertising the monthly payment. I don’t care what the payment is! I want to know what the total price is. Based on the posters, they were catering to the general population that is more interested in the monthly payment than the total cost.” I have to agree with Douglas there. Ever notice cars and trucks are now advertised with bi-weekly payments, to hide the true cost? He goes on, “Big box credit cards come with 0 per cent interest for a year. How many people understand the retroactive interest is applied if the ENTIRE balance isn’t paid at the one-year anniversary? “Electric cars! Good deal! How much of a price premium must be paid?

How many litres of fuel could this extra charge pay for? “The banks ask about your income. Everyone boasts their income. I make this! I make that! WHO CARES! How much to you keep at the end of the year? “Are you on the nevernever plan? “If so, it doesn’t mat-

ter how much money you make!” Indeed. And we both feel that the lack of financial knowledge as adults is directly attributable to poor comprehension of math, right from an early age. The provincial Ministry of Education announced Feb. 27 they were seeking feedback on the current math curriculum over the month of March. “Having wrapped up the consultations with educators across Saskatchewan, we’re confident that we have a good idea of their thoughts and opinions around the effective instruction of the math curricu-

lum,” Education Minister Donna Harpauer said in a news release. “Now, we want to hear from parents or guardians of students who are learning this math. What are the experiences and opinions of the parents and guardians whose children are bringing this math home? Hearing from all different selections of the population who are engaging with the math curriculum will help us to understand the areas that are working, as well as identify opportunities for change.” Dear. Ms. Harpauer: This new system of math sucks. If I can’t explain basic arithmetic to my Grade 2

daughter using it, it needs to go. Oh yeah, and I studied calculus during my university days, so I think I get it. In the meantime, I might be buying a subscription to IXL Math for my daughter. CUPE presidents expects plenty of labour discussions ahead Provincial SASKATOON - The national president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Paul Moist, says it’s going to be a busy bargaining year for their members. Moist says health care is the biggest public policy issue in Saskatchewan. He says recent surveys suggest that people in Saskatchewan want more public health care services, not private ones. He also says the union’s surveys show that the public value Crown corporations. It’s going to be a busy bargaining year for CUPE Saskatchewan, with almost the majority of collective agreements starting to open this year. Moist says of 154 collective agreements, 108 are open. National

QUEBEC - The federal Transportation Safety Board says Canadians have reason to fear rail security given the troubling similarities between a recent fatal train accident in Ontario and a derailment two years ago in Quebec. Board officials made the observation during a news conference Tuesday in Quebec City, while releasing a report into a crash in February 2010 that injured seven people in StCharles-de-Bellechasse. The report cited a variety of factors behind that crash, including: poor visibility because of snow; poor technology that leaves open the possibility of human error; and improper sharing of medical data that could reveal things like sleep disorders. It said all those factors contributed to the

2010 accident where the Via passenger train burst into a siding track at excessive speed. Almost two years later to the day, there were related factors behind the Via derailment that killed three crew members in Burlington, Ont., on Feb. 26, 2012, board members said. *** OTTAWA - A humanrights group wants the federal government to withdraw a directive permitting Canada’s spy agency to share information even when there’s a real risk it will lead to torture. In a letter to the public safety minister and the head of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Amnesty International Canada says the policy violates Canada’s international obligations to

The United States said it is proposing a new United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an end to violence in Syria, first by government forces and then by opposition fighters. Coalers, Mustangs in Big Six finals rematch TE/sports/Big Six/pic Coalers, Mustangs in Big Six finals rematch The Oxbow Huskies refused to quit, but the Bienfait Coalers proved too much in the deciding semi-final game. The sixth-place Oxbow club in the Big Six Hockey League earned a 5-4 overtime win on Monday to force a fifth and deciding game against the first-place Coalers. Back in Bienfait on Tuesday night, the Coalers eked out a 3-2 victory to send them to the finals where they will defend their championship against the Midale Mustangs. The two teams will square off for the second year in a row. The Coalers won the first game of the semi-final series 7-3 last Tuesday, but Oxbow rebounded with a 5-3 win on Wednesday. Bienfait took Game 3 by a 4-2 score on Sunday, only to see the Huskies push

back again in a series that has seen every game won by the home team. The winner advances to the league final against the Midale Mustangs, who wrapped up their series against the Wawota Flyers in four games. With the series tied 1-1 entering Game 3 on Wednesday, the Mustangs won that game 5-3 in Wawota to set up a series-clinching 4-3 win on Friday in Midale. Game times and dates for the final series between the Coalers and Mustangs have yet to be announced. In provincial action, the Coalers are the only Big Six team still alive. Bienfait defeated Nokomis 9-3 in the first game of their best-of-three Senior A south final on Friday. Game 2 is this Friday in Nokomis, followed by Game 3 on Sunday in Bienfait, if necessary.

The Bienfait Coalers finished up their tight semi-final series against the Oxbow Huskies with a 3-2 victory at home on Tuesday night. The Coalers will now face the Midale Mustangs in a rematch of last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final, in which the Coalers won in the seventh game.

Canada women suffer another defeat to France NATIONAL LARNACA, Cyprus - Another big game with France, another disappointment for the Canadian women’s soccer team. The French have defeated defending champion Canada 2-0 in the final of the Cyprus Cup. France knocked Canada out of the World Cup last July, dominating the Canadian women in a 4-0 win. This time goals by Marie-Laure Delie and Louisa Necib — via penalty — were enough to sink Canada. The French are ranked sixth in the world, one spot above Canada. The two teams came into the final each with 3-0-0 records after winning their respective pools. The French had outscored their opponents 8-1 while Canada had an 8-2 edge. *** SASKATOON - Glenn Howard worked overtime to establish yet another record at the Brier. Ontario’s 7-5 win in an extra end over Saskatchewan on Tuesday marked 175 career games at the Brier for Howard, surpassing the

previous record set by his older brother Russ. It was also Ontario’s fifth extra-end game at this year’s Tim Hortons Brier, so if rounded up . . . “What is that. Use shower caps to stow shoes when on the move

• Use a muffin pan to make cookie cups for ice cream or fruit. Just flip your muffin pan over, and press dough over the upturned wells. It will puff up a little,

CONSTRUCTION BULLETIN Woodlawn Reservoir The City of Estevan is undertaking construction of a Treated Drinking Water Reservoir. The affected area includes The Woodlawn Avenue Right of Way North of the St. Joseph’s Hospital. Richard (Dick) Weisgerber April 28, 1946 - February 26, 2012 It is with heavy hearts we tell you that Richard passed away suddenly at his home on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the age of 65 years. Dick was born in Regina on April 28, 1946 to Elizabeth and Christian Weisgerber. On October 12, 1984, Dick married Joanne (nee Ganje) and from this wonderful union had two great children, Stephen and Stephanie. Dick was a loving and great husband and father. He loved to tease and laugh. He was a very kind, generous, soft spoken and hard-working man. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and co-workers. Dick’s entire career was spent working in the field of insurance beginning with SGI and dedicating over 37 years as an insurance broker with Western Financial Group, formerly Border Bannatyne Insurance in Estevan. He was very dedicated to his job where he worked tirelessly to serve his clients. 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup quick oats 1 cup raisins Sugar substitute to equal 1/4 cup sugar, suitable for baking 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon apple pie spice 1 cup fat-free milk 2 tablespoons fat-free sour cream 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 1 egg or equivalent in egg substitute 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray a 12-hole muffin pan with butter-flavored cooking spray or line with paper liners. 2. In large bowl, combine flour, oats, raisins, sugar substitute, baking powder, baking soda and

apple pie spice. In a small bowl, combine milk, sour cream, applesauce and egg. Mix well with a fork to combine. 3. Add milk mixture to flour mixture. Mix just until moistened (batter will be lumpy). Evenly divide batter into prepared muffin wells. Bake 18 to 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center of muffin comes out clean. 4. Place pan on a wire rack and let set 5 minutes. Remove muffins from pan and continue cooling on rack. Baked Chocolate Pudding This easy yet impressive dessert can be made in advance and heated when you’re ready to serve it, making it the perfect choice when you’re hosting a large group. The splash of framboise in the pudding adds an elegant touch. 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus more for greasing 3/4 cup good-quality cocoa powder 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 4 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 2 cups sugar 1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped

1 tablespoon framboise liqueur (optional) Vanilla ice cream, for serving 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Lightly butter 2-quart shallow oval baking dish. 2. Into medium bowl, sift together cocoa powder and flour. In large bowl, with mixer on medium-high speed, beat eggs and sugar 5 to 10 minutes or until very thick and light yellow. 3. Reduce speed to low; add vanilla seeds, framboise (if using), and cocoa mixture. Mix just until combined. Slowly pour in butter; mix just until combined. 4. Pour mixture into prepared dish
