Cheers to the man who cleared the pathway between Nicholson Road and Thorn Crescent. My friends and I walk through that pathway with small children everyday and the walk was so much easier with the snow removed. Cheers to all the co-ordinators, all the volunteers, and all the callers and students who donated to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation during the Radiothon. Way to go! Cheers to the gentleman at Canadian Tire who gave me the last bag of ice salt from his truck. I can’t thank you enough.

Jeers to whoever jeered snow removal getting done on Dieppe Crescent. Clearly this person should get their facts straight before making a comment. Our snow on Dieppe has only been cleared twice all winter, and the second time it was never finished, as you can tell by the boulevard of snow we have had on our street for almost three weeks now. Jeers to some local stores who have very poor snow removal, including the one with a two- to three-foot high snowdrift along the front of the store in the fire lane.

My name is Summer, I am a young female Shih Tzu,. I was just groomed aren’t I cute? Me and 2 other adult female dogs and 2 puppies were found north of Almeda on Hwy. 9 a few Mondays ago, we were left in a quilt to fend for ourselves, thank goodness someone found us. The puppies were only a few weeks old. We are all good now, we have been groomed , fed and given alot of TLC. We were hungry matted and in poor shape when we were found. My name is Ginger, I am one of the three dogs found by Alameda. I have 2 puppies so I will have to stay at the Humane Society for a while until my puppies are old enough to be adopted.

Organizers may be a little fearful the weather could be frightful this year, but the Day of Pink, to be held April 10, will see students and community members marching down Fourth Street for the second consecutive year.

Walk to demonstrate power in numbers Students and community members alike will once again be storming the main thoroughfare of Estevan as they call for respect. The Red Cross Day of Pink will be held for the second year in Estevan with participants marching down Fourth Street in a pink tide. Shannon Culy, school counsellor with the Holy Family Catholic School Division and local event organizer, noted the schools will be taking part in pink shirt activities throughout the week, with the walk to be held in the middle on April 10. There will be pink ribbon days, where students can affix ribbons to various belongings in order to show their support. She noted they will also have a token day, where students are awarded tokens for good deeds. “If kids are out showing acts of kindness or showing caring behaviour or showing respectful behaviour, there will be tokens passed out to students, and they are asked to pass them out to other people,� said Culy. The organizers are quick to call the Day of Pink plans “weather permitting,� considering the chilly and unpredictable spring we’re having when compared to last year. “Last year we were in T-shirts and

sandals and no snow, and this year I’m thinking we’ve got two weeks to get rid of some of that snow,� Culy said, noting the plan is still to hold the walk on April 10 at 1:30 p.m., beginning at the Estevan Court House. Walking a loop around the core of the city, everyone is asked to wear their pink shirts and show their support of the event. “It was something new last year, so we’re checking to see where it is this year. Maybe next we’ll partner up with a couple more of the schools and add a component,� added Culy. “We thought maybe we’ll hold off and see where this goes.� She said they had been kicking around some ideas, but considering the event is still in its infancy, the organizers decided to make sure there is enough support in the community to keep it going. She said bringing in a speaker is something they look at in the future. Culy said they received lots of positive feedback after the first event, and many of the schools and community groups were asking if the walk would continue. The T-shirts with all new designs just arrived at the school this week, so she said the students are getting

excited about the day. Students have been sharing their stories of how the previous walk has affected them, said Culy. “I think all kids recognize that it’s happening and that it’s real, and there is some awareness being brought to (bullying),� she added. “Our whole focus is that there is power in numbers. If we can show our support by doing these activities, wearing the pink, it makes kids realize they’re not alone. They’re not the only ones suffering with it. They’re not going home feeling alone, feeling invisible. It gives them that sense of hope that people are trying to do something about this.� Culy said when she went back to the City of Estevan and Estevan Police Service to let them know of the plans to walk, officials remembered last year’s event and were happy to see that it was going to continue. All community members are welcome to come out for the walk, and for those who don’t have a pink shirt, Culy said any amount of pink will do the job of showing support for the walk. “We’re hoping to get more people from the community to come out and walk with our students.�

The hype behind the stereotype While frequenting one of the mediasharing sites I check in on, I found one site asking men to chime in on what myths about males were untrue. After going through the various posts, I can say I have really only encountered some of them. The two most prominent were that men can’t cook and can’t help but leave their cars cluttered and disheveled. These two things have come up among women in the office who think those things must be true and must apply to me unless I’m weird. I assume they just don’t actually know many young guys. I snapped something in my leg last summer and iced it at home that night. Because I’m such an ingenuous guy, I found a bag of frozen green beans that made for a perfect ice pack. The ladies in the back found it unbelievable I would have green beans kicking around, because the only thing a single guy can prepare is one of those fully cooked and spiced chickens that are bought ready to serve at the grocery store, requiring no more work than a flick of the knife. That they thought I didn’t quite have the capacity to put some frozen beans in a bowl with water and stick it in a microwave for three minutes when I was hungry wasn’t just offensive, it was

I don’t eat Hungry Man dinners and Hamburger Helper because I’m not in college anymore. Now I can just make my own damn food, out of actual real people food, because I’m a grown man. I don’t know where the idea that men have so much trouble in the kitchen started. I had an English teacher in high school who spoke about gender issues, which I just assumed weren’t issues any more. I thought all those gender things were just silly social ghosts from the past like racism, homophobia and antidentites. He talked about how food preparation in the home was the woman’s job until it came to cooking outdoors where manly things like barbecues and fire are the modus operandi, because women can’t cook with fire. That’s generally the way it was between my parents when I

was growing up, but I understand them to have had a frighteningly old-fashioned relationship. I still know how to use an oven, cook a stir-fry and quarter a pepper. I like cooking, and I can flambé like a champ. What I don’t do is bake, because real men do not bake. Then there is the car. The first thing they say climbing in is, “wow, you’re car is clean for a guy.” This stems from the idea that most men are slobs, comfortable surrounded by filth and too lazy to clean it up. I don’t leave a lot of junk in my car and really don’t understand how everyone else’s cars could up with decades of debris. I’m just used to garbage always going in the trash. It can’t just be women who throw things in the garbage. Some people don’t care about their vehicles, but if I’m going to be sitting in it as much as I do, I don’t want to be surrounded by clutter. There must be other men out there who feel the same. Everyone says it’s men who don’t understand women, and while we too, are prone to believing the hype behind stereotypes, it doesn’t seem to me that women get men any better. We’re all just a bunch of superfluous idiots trying to figure this thing out.

Farmers should be lukewarm to new budget The Saskatchewan Party brought down its 2013 budget last week, and it was one where agriculture saw a major positive, as well as leaving us to wonder about what was missing. To start, the positive came in continued research funding. The Saskatchewan Party has shown continued interest in investing general taxpayer dollars in public research for the farm sector, and that is a good plan. The Agriculture Development Fund’s (ADF) budget of $27.7 million is an increase of 36 per cent over last year. The dollars are a significant investment from a province of about one million people, showing the government is aware that a strong agricultural sector is crucial for the overall economic health of the province. Not surprisingly Garth Patterson, executive director with the Western Grains Research Foundation, saw the increase as a positive. “Producers will benefit from the Saskatchewan government’s increased commitment to research,” he said in a

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist press release. While the WGRF is directly involved in research, Patterson is right; producers should benefit from increased dollars invested in the field. So too, should the overall economy since farmers spend money when they are doing well in communities across the province. But there was also a hope the budget would more clearly address how the province plans to deal with community pasture land. Many see such lands as there for all producers, and that if the province wants to divest itself of the land, there needs to be a plan which assures it remains as pasture land for all. There are those who also note the lands are important in terms of wildlife

habitat since it is not disturbed by cultivation, and that the land resource needs to be protected for that reason as well. As New Democrat finance critic Tim Wotherspoon pointed out in a postbudget conference call with media last week, there was no plan in the budget for the pastures. He said the government’s budget failed “to recognize the value of these pastures to producers.” Wotherspoon also noted there was no plan in the budget to address the future of the former PFRA tree nursery at Indian Head, a facility that dates back to before Saskatchewan was a province. Certainly, compared to the major costs of health care, education and debt servicing, agriculture is a minor line in terms of finances. Yet its impact as a sector remains a major one in Saskatchewan. The recognition of that through research investment is positive; the lack of leadership in other areas is troubling, leaving this very much a 50/50 budget for agriculture.

Work safe both physically and psychologically The key to a great work environment may be to find “sneaky� ways to not work as hard. The Southeast Enviro and Safety Seminar hosted occupational therapist Sylvia Yaeger, who spoke not only about physical strains of the workplace but also the psychological ones. With about 200 people gathered in the conference room at the Southeast Training Institute March 20, Yaeger’s keynote address went over the problems of when work life can impede satisfaction in everyone’s day-to-day lives. Hosted annually by the Southeast Environment and Safety committee, the seminar is meant to provide information about safety issues and industry standards that may affect everyday operations for businesses. Yaeger said there is a mind-body connection that needs to be in good balance if people are going to work their best and smartest. Stress leave is a relatively new phenomenon, she noted, adding that nobody ever heard of it until very recently. “When you think about what stress in the workplace can do to people, it’s terrible,� Yaeger told the attendees. “Who heard of stress leave even 25 years ago? Now stress leave is costing Canadian businesses over $12 billion a year, and that is exponentially increasing.� She said that has never been seen before in the country, and the incidences of depression in Canada are “unparallel� to any other time in history. “Think about that for a second. Post-war in NorthAmerica we didn’t have the level of depression that we have now,� she said, noting post-war levels in Europe weren’t as high either. “We live in the land of plenty. We have so much. How can that be? One of the big things that has changed is work, the way that we work, the amount that we work, the expectations.� She said many people are rarely away from their job now that it’s so easy to remain tethered to work with a smartphone. Some employers want people to turn their phones off when away from work, but that is a minority. “The expectation is that we’re available,� she said. That constant connectedness to work and the stress it can create is where many people fall short in their adherence to safety. “The part where we’re really lacking is understanding safety of the mind, psychological safety,� said Yaeger. “There are choices that we make everyday that impact our safety. That’s fine if it’s just about you, except it never really is.� Safety, she said, isn’t all about wearing safety glasses, but is also about the mind-body connection. She said those two elements are not separate, as everything that happens in one’s mind causes a chemical reaction within the body. “Safety has to be more than just protecting your body at work, because some of the people that we work with our

She said employers should make it clear to their employees that safe-work procedures are not optional and are designed to make work easier for everyone. All employees should then follow those procedures. If an employee injures himself or herself by working outside the safe-work procedure, it could result in disciplinary action from the employer. “You never want to be in a situation where you choose an injury, psychological or physical, or make a choice that leads to that because you don’t know what the outcome is. You don’t know if everything is going to be OK,� said Yaeger. She also warned against work being one’s life, suggesting that while it can be a passion, life should start when one leaves work. “How many people go home and hit the couch because they’re exhausted? They have nothing left. They’ve given it all to work,� added Yaeger. “What’s really sad is that they do that for years and years, and then they retire and everything is worn out. They can’t enjoy the life that they’ve planned for themselves because they are too worn out.� The employee’s job is to find those “sneaky� ways through ergonomics and creative solutions to not work as hard, she said. That may be what it takes for some people to be able to enjoy life away from their jobs. Repetitive strain injuries from 2000-2001 in Canada were 2.3 million people.About a quarter of all injuries on the job are back related and between 30 and 40 per cent of all workplace absences in Canada are a result of back pain. “For those guys, the price could be life,� said Yaeger, who added that depending on the injury, some employees will never return to work.

What projects should qualify as candidates for crowdfunding?

For the uninitiated, crowdfunding is simply a way of raising money from the masses online in order to complete a project that would otherwise not be finished. It’s a method generally looked to by artists looking to receive funding for their comic book, album, short film or whatever else they may do. An artist or group can throw up the plans for the project and anybody who really wants to see it come to fruition can pledge whatever amount of money they wish to help fund the project. There is some controversy over a recent project on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, in which a film project was advertised, looking to raise $2 million. It soon came out that a major studio was going to fund the project after taking donations from the public. Lots of people were upset that a big studio with deep pockets would turn to the general public to seek money. Their concern is that those who turn to crowdfunding are supposed to be the poor, struggling artist or engineer with limited resources and connections. The indie films, the quirky technological innovation, the garage band’s first album are supposed to be the projects seeking funding, they say. That’s a bit of a paranoid outlook. Artists big and small can ask for support from fans. Part of the spirit of crowdfunding is people putting money towards something they see as a worthy endeavour and is something they want to see in the world. That should be open to everyone. This is all done under the democratic eye of the Internet, after all. Other crowdfunding sites revolve around the scientific world. Projects pop up on Petridish. org, a site allowing people to pledge funding for scientific research. Many of the projects are small, but if a university wants to post a project in order to receive funds that should be no problem at all. If enough people think the project is a good one and want to see what will come of it, then it’s eligible and people will support it. — Jordan Baker

I’ve only recently been introduced to crowdfunding as a way to raise money, and I think it’s a really promising idea. It’s also something that could be abused and taken advantage of. I think entertainment, like movies and music are the perfect candidates for crowdfunding. A lot of musicians make their music for their fans. It kind of makes sense to me that fans would pay for the music-making process. It keeps bands safe from the control of the domineering music industry and will allow artists to stay true to themselves. In turn, artists can offer their music for free online. It’s a win-win situation. The artists have the funding to produce their music, and the fans are getting what they paid for. I don’t feel comfortable with charities using crowdfunding, however. Yes, lots of charities have the best intentions, but does anyone remember the big Kony marketing campaign last year? When their video first hit the Internet, I imagine there were thousands of people rushing to donate money to Invisible Children. I’m not saying Invisible Children isn’t a worthy charity and deserving of cash, but research needs to be done into where donations go. In the rush created by Invisible Children’s online campaign, how many people would have donated their savings without looking into the cause? I’m betting quite a few. One thing that’s really nice about crowdfunding is that people can use their common sense to decide what to fund. If you feel like tossing in your hard-earned cash to build the house of a complete stranger, that’s totally on you. It’s a donation made in good faith. You might find yourself being scammed, but you at least have the option to use your brain to determine if you’re donating to a worthwhile cause. — Tonaya Marr

Squeeze a few more sardines into that flying tin can I think a lot of Western Canadians take a perverse pride in WestJet. It started out as a Western Canadian airline. It was several years before the airline even offered flights to and from Toronto. Westerners saw this as almost as “sticking it to the man,� and “we don’t need the centre of the universe to survive.� WestJet was modelled on the highly successful Southwest Airlines. Its barebones approach has made it one of the most successful airlines on the continent, surviving recessions when others were in bankruptcy court. Southwest’s approach was KISS; keep it simple, stupid. The entire airline operated only one model of airplane — the Boeing 737. This meant that they only needed one set of spare parts and mechanics that specialized in only one aircraft. One class of seating meant you didn’t have empty first class seats because no one wanted to pay the extra fare. One class also means everyone is treated the same, which makes the passengers feel a little happier because they don’t look up to the people at the front of the plane and realize they are being treated like second class citizens in the back. With its new president, Gregg Saretsky, the company has started to

According to a March 23 article in the Financial Post, the airline is going to bring in a second class of seating - “premium economy.� It will have the same newly designed seats as the poor slobs in the back, but they will have four to five more inches of space between them than those in the economy class. They accomplish this by squeezing the economy seats two to three inches closer together. This is being done by making all the seats substantially thinner, which is sure to be noticed by backsides. The company is also launching a regional airline, WestJet Encore, with a

second aircraft, 20 new Bombardier Dash 8 Q400s. This will allow service to smaller centres, but also takes away from the “only one plane� model that has served the airline so well in the past. While service to places like Fort St. John will be welcome, one worries about how the changes will bode for WestJet overall. We’ve been so proud of this Western Canadian based airline, we’d hate to see it become another Air Canada (which has multiple classes, multiple aircraft, and a hard time keeping out of bankruptcy court). What’s most bothersome in my eyes is the change to multiple classes in WestJet

aircraft. I don’t think the introduction of segregation of classes is worth the loss of esprit de corps among its passengers. WestJet customers, on the whole, tend to love this airline. For those that don’t love it, generally they hate it a lot less than they hate Air Canada. Why start giving them reasons to lessen the love? As for the trend of packing more people into an airplane, someone needs to tell airlines that Canadians as a whole are getting fatter, not thinner. A whole lot fatter would be more like it. For every person who looks good in Lululemon yoga pants, you probably have three or more who can barely wedge their butts into the seats. Instead of cramming us like sardines into their flying tin cans, it sure would be nice if airlines gave us a little more space instead. That comes at the expense of higher ticket prices, which no one wants to pay, however. I wonder what’s next? Maybe they’ll remove the seats entirely and stack us like cord wood? The electoral boundaries commission recommended last year that more ridings be made exclusively rural or exclusively urban instead of hybrids. That’s supported by the NDP and Liberals, who theoretically benefit from more urban ridings, but has been vigorously attacked by the Conservatives as an unnecessary change. The Bienfait Coalers continued their run of dominance in the Big Six Hockey League on Sunday, winning their third straight league championship. The Coalers swept the Arcola-Kisbey Combines in Arcola to complete the three-peat. After three blowout victories, the Coalers had to fight for the deciding win, edging the Combines 6-5 after the home side came back from a three-goal deficit. “They gave us a little bit of a scare,� said Coalers co-manager Trevor Dutka. After winning three straight games to upset the Midale Mustangs in the semis, the Combines weren’t able to push Bienfait in the first three games of the final. The Coalers won the opener 9-1 on March 19 in Bienfait and took Game 2 by a 6-2 score on March 21 in Arcola. It was another drubbing in favour of the Coalers last

Skill-wise, Datsyuk has few peers Even though these words are running during the week of April 1, we’re not fooling when we say Sidney Crosby has competition as the best player in the National Hockey League. Hall of Fame hockey writer Jim Matheson wrote recently in the Edmonton Journal that Crosby was the best player in the game but that the “best of the rest� was Pavel Datsyuk of Detroit Red Wings. Hmmmm! After watching both of them play a few games this year, here’s where I stand on this comparison: 1. Crosby; 1A, Datsyuk. This is not to knock Crosby by saying he might have a hockey equal. Sid the Kid is undoubtedly among the best eight to 10 players of all time and at last glance, he was 20 points ahead of Datsyuk in the scoring race, but hockey is about more than piling up points. While Crosby wheels around the ice with gusto, setting up linemates for highlight reel goals and making incredible individual plays at breakneck speed, Datsyuk operates at

a controlled slower pace, a Baryshnikov with the puck. In a crowd, no one controls the game like Datsyuk, an 11-year NHL veteran who was picked in the late rounds of the 1998 draft. Using deft moves in tight spaces, employing the slickest feet in the game, Datsyuk seemingly plays keep-away with the puck when the mood strikes him. He’s like a magician. And while he’s the Red Wings’ top offensive threat, he’s also among the very best in the entire league when it comes to defence: He has won the Frank J. Selke award for defensive forward of the year three times, a prize Crosby will likely never contest. Don’t get me wrong: If an NHL general manager were picking a team from scratch right now, Crosby would be his No. 1 pick because he’s only 25 and Datsyuk is 34. But for sheer skill in 2013, Datsyuk takes a back seat to no one. Both Crosby and Datsyuk are riding up front. Those two are among five or six players in the NHL who are individually worth the price of admission (Steven Stamkos,

cross-country skiing champion Andrus Veerpalu won his appeal Tuesday against a three-year doping ban, even though sport’s highest court suspects he did cheat with human growth hormone. The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the Estonian skier’s appeal against the ban imposed by the International Ski Federation, citing “procedural flaws� which could have caused false positive test results. “The panel noted that there were many factors in this case which tend to indicate that Andrus Veerpalu did in fact himself administer exogenous HGH,� the court said in a statement. The court’s three arbitrators also stated their belief in the value of the test for HGH — which has traditionally been one of the hardest substances to detect in the fight against doping. FIS, the ski federation, said Veerpalu tested positive for HGH in Estonia in January 2011 while preparing for the world championships the following month. The 42-year-old skier won gold medals in the classical 15-kilometre races at the 2002 and 2006 Olympics, and was also a two-time world champion. *** TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Lightning hired Jon Cooper as their new coach on Monday. Cooper had been coaching Syracuse of the AHL, Tampa Bay’s top minor league affiliate.
