Local shoppers check out the merchandise on display at the farmers’ market during last year’s campaign. The market is open this year for the Christmas season each Saturday between Nov. 26 and Dec. 17.
Estevan Farmers’ market the place Kinette Club for local Christmas shopping Craft Show The Christmas season is kicking up already and what better way to check things off your list than making a stop at one Estevan’s final farmers’ markets of the season. The market will be prepped and open for four final outings beginning next Saturday in the Estevan Exhibition Hall. That’s the day after Black Friday, a holiday shopping bonanza in the United States. Market organizer Linda Jones expects the first day will be a smaller affair, with about 20 vendors, but it will pick up quickly in the other three weeks with more than 30. “As it goes along, it gets busier,” she said. “More people get in the mood.” A lot of the vendors who has been with the market all summer long will show up with their Christmas line of goods. Jones noted that the people
who bring in crafts and the bakers, in particular, bring in the holiday goods. Jones has been attending the market for more than 30 years, and as far back as she can remember there have always been markets leading up to Christmas. Now she said there are some vendors who come from Carievale, Weyburn and Regina. She said in many cases she contacts vendors from outside the surrounding area to see if they’d like to participate in the markets, but because it’s been going so long, most of those people are very now aware of the opportunities to set up shop in Estevan on the Saturdays leading up to Christmas. Those people have been spreading the word to others they know, and those word-of-mouth notices have meant that the local market keeps pretty full for the Christmas season sittings.
And locally, people have been very supportive of the market. “The last couple of years (attendance) has really increased. We’ve been doing a lot more advertising in recent years.” Jones said the local attendees have been very faithful to the market. “The people of Estevan really support us. They come out unbelievably well in the summer, and then they always come back for the winter ones as well,” she said. Whether you’re looking for baked goods, Christmas ornaments or a unique gift, there are lots of reasons to continue or begin to support the Christmas farmers’ market. The market is open in the Exhibition Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting Nov. 26, with dates following on Dec. 3, 10 and 17.

Cellphones new target of poor driving Operation Handsfree Blitz isn’t a new military strategy; it’s an SGI plan, executed by local law enforcement all over the province to crack down on drivers using cellphones. SGI research says that 92 per cent of Saskatchewan residents consider talking or texting while driving to be a major safety issue. I doubt the culprits are a mere eight per cent of us, however. Either this is a rule that individual people don’t think applies to them, because they are such stupendous drivers, or we ask others to do as we say and not as we do. It’s probably more of the former. I’ve mentioned before that people tend to have a very bloated opinion of their own driving skills. I have an aunt who swears she can text without looking at her phone, and continue to drive like a champ, but that’s what everyone who gets into an accident under those circumstances thinks too. The SGI bulletin outed talking and texting as the main activities causing a disturbance on our roads, but really any use of a cellphone is questionable behaviour for a driver.
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers Playing Angry Birds may result in some disgruntled drivers around you, and if you weren’t so focused on the furious feathers on your phone, you might be able to lend a little attention to the fur stuck in your grille from two kilometres back when you clipped Bambi. Using the phone while driving has become pretty taboo in the last couple of years. Some people think it’s so disrespectful to everyone else on the road that they’d look at those drivers with the same venomous eyes they would usually reserve for smokers who have wandered out of their segregated zones. It will take a long time for cellphone users to kick the habit. Whenever something new comes along, it takes a while before the dangers are identified, and then twice as long to get everybody to
really respect those dangers. I’m sure it took a long time for seat belts to earn their place among our safety staples, next to helmets and orange camouflage. While on a landscaping crew a few years ago, I recall being the guy stuck in the middle of the front bench of the truck. A number of times the driver would whip out his phone to text something, so I was then expected to take the wheel for a brief time while he thumbed out his message. That may not have been the safest thing to do, but it was probably better than him continuing to steer with his priorities on his message and us passengers’ priorities on not veering into the ditch. Unfortunately, we don’t always have a passenger at the ready to take the wheel every time our phones vibrate in our pockets. People can be pretty bad at driving, especially when they have blinders in the way of their own mistakes. We don’t need any more reasons to perform poorly behind the wheel. Hopefully the blitz can hasten how quickly we become accustomed to cellphone-less driving.
Draft horses a connection to farm efforts There is something about being around draft horses that I have always enjoyed. It probably goes back to stories my dad used to tell about how he quit school in Grade 8 to stay home and work the big horses in the field. When I was a youngster, a few decades ago now, the stories were most intriguing because of the prospect of quitting school, but as I grew older I came to understand my dad’s love of the big horses. At the recent Grain Millers Harvest Showdown in Yorkton, it was great to see the gentle giants as part of the event, especially when the draft horse show has been eliminated from Canadian Western Agribition. I have to think that is a mistake by the CWA given how impressive a ring full of four and sixhorse hitches are. It is sad that has been lost at what we often hear referred to as the premier livestock show in Canada. In the case of the Yorkton show, one of the most amazing moments for me was to watch young school students gathered around the massive draft horses. The children were in awe, but also so excited to be able to reach out and pet the big horses which took the attention in their usual docile nature. That is perhaps the most amaz-
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist ing thing about draft horses, how the powerful horses are so amazingly calm. The seeming opposites come into focus when watching the horse pull competition. Between pulls, the horses stand quietly on the sidelines. Once they are hooked to the pulling sled, there is an explosion of power as the horses get down to the business of pulling. To see the horse pulling up to 10,000 pounds shows their great power, and how it was that much of the Canadian Prairies was transformed to farmland through the sweat of horses such as those now relegated to pulling show wagons and competitive pulling as they have given way to mechanization. It is good though, that breeders are keeping draft breeds alive, and in terms of raising top animals, the Canadian Prairies certainly excel. An example of the quality was seen at the recent World Clydesdale Show held in Wisconsin.
Donegal Dr. Pepper was recently named Supreme Champion Clydesdale of the world at the show. The sixyear-old stallion was raised by Greg Gallagher of Canora and was chosen Grand Champion Stallion of the show for his current owners”Bob and Laura Gookin of Boulevard, Cal. He topped a field of 108 stallions that were eligible for the title. The championship was one of several top-10 class finishes to come back to Western Canada. And in 2012 it will be the Belgian breed’s time to shine as their world show is held in Brandon, an event high on my “must attend” list for next year. No doubt Western Canadian bloodlines will once again shine. Certainly draft horses are integral to our farm heritage, and any effort to maintain the breeds gets my applause. In that same vein, it’s hats off to Merlin Ford of the Kuroki area and his ongoing efforts to chronicle the history of draft horses in a new book. Check it out at www.clippityclop.ca For me, the big horses are a living connection to the farm efforts of my grandfather and my dad, and that will always make them special, and an element of any agricultural event I will be drawn to.

Movember means much more than moustaches November has been transformed into a moustache lovers’ paradise. Aptly affectionately renamed “Movember,” the month has been dedicated to spreading awareness and raising funds toward the prevention of prostate cancer. Men (and women?) grow their moustaches for the entire month, giving them the perfect conversation piece to get people discussing the deadly and once-taboo disease. However, in a lot of ways Movember has turned into something evil. For one, moustaches are great face hiders. They’re kind of like wearing a great hat to cover a bad hair day. Some people turn a hefty moustache into the perfect way to disguise a not-so-perfect face. This technique makes it tough to spot attractive males when out in public. Say you’re at the library, where I’ve been told people sometimes
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me spend their time. You spot a male across the room. He appears to be single, and you check him out. Then BAM! moustache. Distracted, you can’t decide whether or not to pursue. The horror! Then there are people who take advantage of moustache growing season. They have no opinion on prostate cancer, nor do they have a desire to spread awareness. They’re just jumping on the bandwagon and abusing the fact that women everywhere can’t whine about their moustaches for an entire month. They seem to relish
in the freedom to gross out women (not all – totally generalizing) without them being able to comment. And there’s the double standard. Were roles re-
versed and women grew out their leg or armpit hair for a month to support a cause, I’m sure men would have something to say. Maybe women are spreading awareness of breast or ovarian cancer. Men are still going to complain. One also needs to consider the facial hair challenged men. These are the adults who are unable to produce more hair than a baseball team (nine on each side – Grandpa Tom’s joke). These unfor-
tunate men are subjected to teasing and questioning of the masculinity simply because they were born without a certain gene for hairiness. On the plus side, Just For Men hair colouring products make a killing off these guys. So at least someone wins. The exact opposite on the spectrum are the men who use Movember to grow all of their facial hair. A man whose beard connected uninterrupted with his chest hair was spotted
at the university this week. Pardon me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that mess is spreading awareness for anything more than the increasing price of razors. Moral of the story: boys, it’s cool to grow a moustache to support a cause. It’s hard to be against something like that. But don’t abuse your month of power. Because women don’t forget things like that. And there are 11 other months in the year in which to extract our revenge.

Is it disrespectful to keep a business open during Remembrance Day?
He He SheShe
It’s not disrespectful to stay open on any day. Most special days are not ones that people really take the time to acknowledge and celebrate, or in this case remember. Even with Remembrance Day, only a handful of people really take notice of why this day is of any more significance than a typical Tuesday. Some people go to the cenotaph. Some people sleep in or go away to the cottage one last time before the winter really kicks into high gear, and they don’t think about any soldiers past or present who give their lives for the ability to go to the cottage one last time. I have a lot of respect for Remembrance Day. I certainly feel it’s a much more worthy day to recognize than the birthday of Queen Victoria. People choosing to keep their businesses open to serve customers is not disrespectful. A lot of work places take the day off, so a lot of stores will remain open in order to serve all those people who don’t have to work. It’s a day for stores to make money, especially with the early-bird Christmas shoppers. I remember a conversation in college that my journalism class had with our profs. We were having an editorial meeting, and Peter Conradi, the managing editor at the Niagara Falls Review, asked the group if we should bother covering Remembrance Day. We put our collective foot down, taking a stand for both veterans and poppies. Conradi assured us he didn’t hate the troops and was just questioning whether Remembrance Day was relevant, particularly for a publication that targeted 19-yearolds. He was just asking us if we thought Remembrance Day coverage would sell newspapers. Of course it wouldn’t sell a single paper, but we thought it was important enough to cover and nobody read the student paper anyway. Remembrance Day may be the most significant special day of the year, at the very least beating out Family Day, but even so, very few people give it much attention. If the general public doesn’t give it any thought, why should store owners treat it as sacred? They know more people are going to be attending the open stores than those who are going to be recognizing the significance of the day. It just makes sense to stay open.
Said
Said
Yes. Remembrance Day isn’t some trivial government holiday that the ambitious can ignore with the bottom line in mind. Remembrance Day is meant to show respect and gratitude to the brave men and women who have served in the name of our freedom. Keeping your business open during Remembrance Day really just shows that you value making a buck over being appreciative toward all that
you’ve been given. And, unlike Christmas or Easter, you can’t shrug Remembrance Day off as something religious. There can be no “Oh sorry, I don’t celebrate Remembrance Day because it’s not part of my religion.” Do you live in Canada? Are you personally free from war? Then heck, yes, Remembrance Day is for you. Consider that you probably wouldn’t own a designer shoe store if there were a draft in affect. You’d be fighting in some horrible war. Your family members, too, would be off battling somewhere. Seems like locking up for a day isn’t such a huge price to pay when you consider the alternatives. I do see one exception, however: businesses that offer awesome discounts or some type of special treatment for veterans are welcome to stay open. Nothing says “thank you” like 50 per cent off their pancake breakfast. Or maybe a door prize when a veteran enters your store. Something along those lines. If you’re going to stay open, you might as well put the people who won you your freedom first. We have so much to be grateful living in Canada and it’s a shame that business owners don’t always realize this. I don’t think it would hurt you terribly to stay home one day of the year. Even if you don’t catch a Remembrance Day ceremony or thank a veteran personally, spend time with your family and be thankful that because of the sacrifice of others, you have a family to spend time with.

Not the brightest bulb I’m standing in aisle in the big blue box store, looking at the picked over shelves of light bulbs. “Now what?” I ask myself. A few years ago, I wrote about the no-brainer policy adopted by the federal government to ban incandescent light bulbs as energy-inefficient enemies of the environment. I had long been a convert to energy-efficient lighting, and seen the results in my power bill. I even installed motion sensors for the bathroom and laundry room lighting this past year.
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile Except this week, I was also seeing the results in my pocketbook, and it was not to the positive. Less than a month ago, I bought a box of four 23watt (100-watt incandescent equivalent) compact fluorescents from the same big box store to replace all the conventional bulbs in

our stairway ceiling fan light fixture. The second last of four had finally burnt out, so they needed to be replaced. Not an easy task, it turns out, even with an extension ladder. It involved contortions that are not generally deemed safe by OH&S inspectors. But I had put in these new bulbs, with the ones with long lives promised on the box, with the satisfaction that I would not need to risk life nor limb for at least a few years. When my wife got home, she was duly blinded by the lights. What she didn’t notice is that they took three minutes to actually brighten up after being
turned on. Last Friday, the third of the four bulbs went out. These bulbs cost about $2.50 each. I was not impressed. Still, that’s a lot less than the $7 a bulb I paid when we first made a big switch to compact fluorescents in our old house about eight years ago. Those bulbs, from that mammoth big box store that requires memberships, promised lives of seven years per bulb. We didn’t get a third of that. Yes, we did see definite savings on the power bill, but the capital costs have been noticeable as well. I say “capital costs” somewhat in jest, because when you’re paying $7 a bulb, you expect the bloody things to work, and last. The next lighting technology is supposed to be LEDs. They may have taken over flashlights by storm, but house usage has
not yet caught up. At my recommendation, Mom put some in her house to replace highenergy usage halogen lights. The result was what I would call a “hollow light”, at best. These very pricey bulbs were less than useless. A candle may have been more effective. A coal-oil lamp surely was brighter. They were in the neighbourhood of $20 a bulb. My basement is lit with eight pot lights and three track lights, most of which are on dimmers. Dimmable compact fluorescents of this style are atrociously expensive around $15+ a bulb from what I’ve seen. I really don’t feel like spending $150 or more on light bulbs for my basement, especially with the poor longevity track record I’ve had. That’s three-quarters of my power bill for a month. I may just forego
the ability to dim the lights and put in three $1.50 single pole light switches instead. Now we’re looking the 2012 incandescent bulb ban in the face, and the supposed energy efficient replacements have been, in my experience: pricey, ineffective, and prone to early burn out. In short, they have not been all they’re cracked up to be. In my heart, I want to stay as energy efficient as possible. But in the end, I reached for some of the last boxes of 60 watt, Thomas Edison-styled incandescent bulbs on the shelf. They only cost about 32 cents a bulb. Hopefully I won’t break my neck replacing my good-fornothing compact fluorescents in the stairwell. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian. zinchuk@sasktel.net

Great memories of grandparents I remember as a child how I adored my Nana. She was one of my favourite people, so kind, so caring and she was always on my side. When I wasn’t allowed to get my ears pierced, Nana stepped in and they got done. When life was feeling all too hard, Nana was there with chicken soup and a kind word. She always shared her wisdom in the most unique way; she corrected me without me really realizing it. My Nana was a small woman (maybe fivefeet tall) but in my young and now older eyes, she was a giant. I’m sure she had her shortcomings, her challenges in life, like the rest of us - but I saw none. I saw strength, courage, wisdom and kindness. She was my Nana, after all. Nana had an interest-
Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life ing role in our family. She was a great support to my parents, when it came to us kids. Nana’s house was always open to us; she always welcomed us with open arms. There was always a bed ready for us, cash on hand if we needed it, and she could whip up a hot meal and fill our tummies in what seemed like minutes. She played games with us, helped us with our school work, told us stories and always connected the family dots,
“Uncle who? How’s that person related to me? Our Nana also served as a sounding board for us. When we thought our parents were being unreasonable, we’d ask Nana. When we felt they were being too hard on us, we’d go to Nana. Oh that poor lady. I think back now and see all of the stuff she dealt with and how it never seemed to faze her. Although she was our sounding board and great supporter, our parents also used Nana in

their favour too. An example of how Nana impacted and helped me through life would be the time I stole a piece of gum from our local IGA Store (sorry Mr. and Mrs. White). If my parents making me return to the IGA to admit my guilt and pay for the gum wasn’t enough, they then made me stand in front of Nana and tell this sweet, gentle, kind, little lady what I’d done. Of course, as the years went on, the situations escalated from the gum incident to other more “teen related things - things more like bad report cards, talking back to our parents and then, of course, the peer pressure incidents. Getting in trouble with our parents was emotional enough on its own but the real sting came when we had to disappoint Nana. What clever parenting and discipline our parents used

on all of us. The “grandparent effect was huge in my life because, as I mentioned, my Nana was an extraordinary person in my life. Now, as a grown woman and as a mother of three, I too have adopted the “grandparent Effect. I have seen it work wonders in our home. Most recently, our eldest was “caught out in a very minor situation that required parental intervention (a table discussion). Following our healthy discussion, I told her that the going forward part of her discipline would be to call her grandmother (my mother) and tell her what had happened and why she had found herself in certain “hot water with her parents. At the thought of this, my daughter burst into tears. She wept saying, “No, please don’t make
me do it, I never want to disappoint Grandma. I cuddled her and said, “Well then my sweetheart, whenever you are faced with a decision or are tempted in anyway, just imagine yourself standing in front of Grandma, telling her about it. It’s called the ‘grandparent effect’ darling and trust me ... I know it works. Friends, never underestimate the “grandparent effect. Adopt it as one of your tools and make it your own. Extended family is there, like my Nana, to support, to love, to be a soft place to land and in some cases perhaps a simple look of disappointment from a respected grandparent is all that is needed. Measles again causing problems in the province Provincial REGINA - Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Health is warning residents about measles, something the province hasn’t seen much for more than a decade. Two kids and four adults have caught the virus in the last year. All six cases are in Regina and so far, officials say they are not believed to be connected. Deputy chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab believes what we’re seeing is in reaction to outbreaks in other parts of the continent. Generally, measles shouldn’t be of great concern because the immunization rate in Saskatchewan in 94 per cent. National OTTAWA - The federal NDP has acknowledged it broke the rules when it launched a Jack Layton memorial fundraising campaign on behalf of the Broadbent
Institute. The Canada Elections Act prohibits political parties from soliciting donations on behalf of any entity other than the party itself, one of its candidates, a leadership contestant or a district association. The federal New Democrats launched the online campaign after Layton died of cancer in August. The party avoided court proceedings and potential fines by entering into a socalled “compliance agreement” with the commissioner of elections, William Corbett. *** VANCOUVER - A B.C. Supreme Court judge began hearing arguments Monday over whether Canada’s laws against assisted suicide should be struck down, while outside the courthouse, a group protesting against euthanasia hung effigies in trees. Joe Arvay, a lawyer for the B.C. Civil Liberties As-
sociation, told the court there is a wealth of new evidence supporting the right to die since the high court rejected Sue Rodriguez in her efforts to get help to end her life 18 years ago. Arvay told the court he’s confident that once all the evidence is completed, the judge will find Canada’s ban on assisted suicide unconstitutional. *** OTTAWA - The CBC has given a Commons committee some of the documents it has been seeking, but the broadcaster did so under protest Monday. CBC president Hubert Lacroix said the broadcaster is complying with an order from the access-to-information committee, even though he contends the order may be unconstitutional. Some of the documents are sealed, however, and the CBC has asked MPs to read a legal opinion the corporation
has obtained before opening the material. International LONDON - The press likes to cast itself as society’s guardian. On Monday, the judge leading the investigation into Britain’s deepening phone hacking scandal vowed to find an answer to the question: Who guards the guardians? For years, the British media’s answer has been that it mainly looks after itself. But following explosive allegations of pervasive criminality at Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World tabloid, Lord Justice Brian Leveson suggested it was time for a change. “Guarding the guardians
is not an optional add-on,” he said. *** SAN FRANCISCO Ilya Zhitomirskiy, one of the founders of the social networking site Diaspora, has died. He was 22. Nina Fiore, executive secretary in the San Francisco medical examiner’s office, confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday that Zhitomirskiy died in San Francisco. She would not say how or when he died. Diaspora, an alternative to Facebook, was founded by four New York University students in 2010. *** ATHENS, Greece Greece’s junior coalition leader defied European de-

mands to provide written support for a massive new debt relief deal, leaving the country’s loan lifeline in doubt hours before its new government was to outline its policy platform. Conservative party leader Antonis Samaras insisted Monday that his verbal pledge to back the deal should suffice for Greece’s European partners to release an €8 billion loan installment, without which the government will run out of cash before Christmas. Greece depends on loans from a €110 billion ($150 billion) rescue package agreed in 2010, when huge borrowing costs blocked the debt-crippled country from international markets.

Lions whimper, then roar down the stretch So, here’s some early strategy for getting to the Grey Cup Game, which has become almost a national holiday in Canada: Start your season 0-5, then 1-6, then start getting serious. Usually, 0-5 means at last three things: 1. Player personnel is pathetic; 2. Fans quit showing up for games; 3. The coach gets fired. In British Columbia, evidently, it’s called warming up. Unbelievably, the B.C. Lions were 1-6 on Aug. 13, after a 30-17 home-field defeat at the hands of Winnipeg Blue Bombers and now, about three months and 11 games later, they are likely to be overwhelming favourites to win the Grey Cup when it’s played on Sunday, Nov. 27 in B.C. Place. (The Lions had one obstacle in their way en route to the Grey Cup Game, the Edmonton Eskimos, in the Western final held this past weekend.) Vegas odds makers would have laughed at anybody putting serious Grey Cup money on a team languishing at 1-6 one-third of the way into the season. But the last laugh would go to a B.C. believer, one of whom was veteran head coach Wally Buono, who saw that three of those first six losses were by less than a touchdown and that quarterback Travis Lulay was improving with
Bruce Penton Sports Columnist
every game. In July and August, Lulay was Ordinary Joe. In September and October, he was Super Joe, throwing 25 TD passes and only three interceptions in the Lions’10-1 rush down the stretch. When voting took place for Most Outstanding Player in the Western Conference, Lulay was lionized by the voters: He won in a walk. And this is what most observers think the Lions should do on Nov. 27 in Vancouver, when 60,000plus fans jam into B.C. Place and millions of TV viewers across the country tune in to watch what could be, well, a contest similar to the Christians being fed to the lions in ancient Rome. The Christians, in this case, will be the Eastern Conference rep, either Winnipeg or Hamilton, neither of whom scared too many people - other than their own coaches and fans - down the CFL stretch. The Bombers lost seven of their last 11 while limping to the East
pennant; the Tiger Cats had similar problems, losing four of their last five (finishing with an uninspiring 8-10 overall) before escaping with an overtime win over Montreal in the East semi-final. If the Lions win the Cup on Nov. 27, other coaches around the CFL will have a new answer to critics complaining about poor starts to seasons. “Just pulling a Buono,” they’ll say. • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “St. Louis Cardinal Albert Pujols unveiled a statue of himself outside his restaurant. David Wells once thought he had a statue of himself outside a restaurant but found out the place was just a Big Boy.” • Barach again: “NASCAR driver Kyle Busch has written a letter of apology for intentionally causing a wreck during a race. Racing fans were surprised. NASCAR drivers can write?” • R.J.Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Saskatchewan Roughriders punter Chris Milo tied a CFL record with
a 108-yard boot for a single. Call it the punt of no return.” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “John Daly, who walked out in the middle of his round at the Australian Open after half-heartedly hitting all his balls into a water hazard, can always say the devil made him do it. Daly’s latest world ranking: 666th.” • Budd Bailey of the Buffalo News, after NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier ran the New York Marathon in four hours, 14 minutes, 21 seconds: “And that includes four minutes for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct along the way.” • Kevin Gleason of the Middletown (N.Y.) Times Herald-Record, on tinkering with the outfield dimensions at Citi Field: “The Mets do know the other team gets to play with the fences in as well, right?” • After No. 1- and No. 2-ranked Louisiana State and Alabama played a 9-6 football “thriller”, Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN. com wrote: “If that was The Game of the Century, then I want my 100 years back. So let’s get this out of the way right now: These two teams deserve a BCSchampionship rematch like Kim Kardashian deserves to keep her wedding gifts.” • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “If
that was the “Game of the Century,” then in the 1900s the Cubs were the “Team of the Century.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha World-Herald weighs in on the debate about Canada replacing the beaver as its national symbol. “How can a country obsessed with hockey have a mascot with teeth?” • Another one from Dwight Perry: “The Toronto Maple Leafs are off to a 9-4-1 start and leading their division? Looks like that guy who keeps predicting the world is
about to end finally nailed it this time.” • Headline in the Onion. com: “Celebratory Jets Dump Cooler Of Soap And Water On Rex Ryan.” • Columnist Bob McCown in Sportsnet magazine, answering a reader’s question about whether tennis star Novak Djokovic is on drugs: “Djokovic weighs about 80 pounds and his arms are like pipe-cleaners. The only drugs it looks like he’s on are laxatives.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@yahoo.ca

Riders take first step to clearing murky future The Canadian Football League is down to its final four in the running for the 2011 Grey Cup but the Saskatchewan Roughriders got a head start on all of them in the news this past week While the Blue Bombers, Tiger Cats, Lions and Eskimos all battle for the right to play in the CFL title game in two weeks in Vancouver, the Riders took a major step towards cleaning up the franchise’s murky future. At a news conference on Wednesday, Rider president Jim Hopson announced vice-president of football Ken Miller will not be replaced and that general manager Brendan Taman has been given full control of football operations as he enters the final year of his contract. It was a major step forward for the franchise and
Rod Pedersen Rider Insider also a point of clarification. It was admitted that Taman never had much control of the team while having to answer to Miller for the past two seasons, and now it’s up to him to chart the course that includes hiring a new head coach. It had been suggested that Taman was due a contract extension because no top-notch coach would want to come here with a GM in such a precarious situation, but that notion was quickly swept aside. Taman was confident as he addressed the room full of media and also an-
nounced the promotion of Jeremy O’Day to assistant GM. A Saskatoon product, Taman has plenty on his plate as he attempts to
clean up the mess left behind from a 5-13 season. There are 14 free agents who need to be dealt with and they will be - but on a priority basis. First and foremost is the matter of a coach. Right now there are four or five candidates, but that list will swell as more coaches become available (some are currently under contract to teams still alive in the playoffs). Rider assistants Richie
RON’S
Hall and Craig Dickenson have made it known they’ll apply for the job, as has Hamilton defensive coordinator Corey Chamblin. Offensive co-ordinators Dave Dickenson (Calgary) and Scott Milanovich (Montreal) will be approached as well, and interviews will begin this week. This will be a crucial hire for Taman. For all intents and purposes, this is his first real shot to prove
himself. He reportedly had no real control during his 10 years in charge of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and he certainly didn’t have it here the past two. It’s a one-shot deal to turn this thing around and get a new contract for himself, and to restore credibility to this franchise. He welcomes the challenge. No-Fuss SlowCooker Beef Tacos It’s finally time to share my family’s favorite “Too Good to Be True SlowCooker Beef Tacos” recipe. Passed on by word of mouth from one neighbor to the other, it’s a recipe that’s so easy to remember that I’ve just never taken the time to write it down. Simply put: “Place pot roast sprinkled with taco seasoning in a slow cooker. Set on high and cook five to six hours. Spoon tender, shredded beef into warm soft taco shells and add favorite fillings.” That’s it! No-fail, no-fuss cooking that our busy lifestyles demand when we want to gather friends together for a robust and tasty evening meal. Ingredients for 12 softshell beef tacos: 2-1/2- to 3-pound boneless beef chuck pot roast, trimmed of fat 1-ounce package taco seasoning mix, such as Old El Paso brand 1 medium onion, peeled and sliced (optional) 12 flour tortillas Toppings according to taste: cilantro, chopped tomatoes, chili peppers and onions, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, squeeze of lime juice 1. Sprinkle both sides of meat with seasoning mix. Reduce the amount according to taste. Place meat in slow cooker. If using onion, spread slices evenly over the meat. No need to add water. 2. Cover, set on high and
cook for five to six hours or until meat is tender and easily falls apart. Remove from slow cooker with a large slotted spoon. 3. Using two forks, shred the beef into a large bowl. Add onion and remaining warm juices from the slow cooker. Toss lightly to keep moist. To serve, spoon meat into warm taco shells. Add favorite toppings. Extra idea: For a spicy pot-roast dinner, follow above steps. After three and a half hours in the slow cooker, add six peeled and quartered potatoes and six medium carrots, halved crosswise and lengthwise, on top of the meat. Add pepper and 1/4 teaspoon salt. When meat and vegetables are tender, about two hours later, remove meat and vegetables with a slotted spoon and place on a serving platter. Spoon drippings over meat, and serve with a fresh green salad. Serves 6. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Table tennis gold medal goes to Canadian PROVINCIAL REGINA - Jeremy O’Day is making his way up the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ front office. The former lineman was promoted to assistant general manager Nov. 9 after joining the Riders’ front office as their football operations co-ordinator earlier this year. “Jeremy has surpassed our expectations in the job he has done for us,” GM Brendan Taman said in a statement. “He brings forth incredible dedication and passion to this job and he knows the importance of the Riders to this community.”
game in Edmonton on Saturday and died of his injuries in hospital. Betty Chmilar of Hockey Edmonton says grief counsellors have met with the 16- and 17-year-old players of both teams. Counsellors have also been called in to Holy Trinity High School to help students and staff come to terms with the teen’s death. She says Fundytus was wearing an approved neck guard and other required hockey equipment. Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta are expected to review what happened. *** TORONTO - The NHL’s general managers are looking to clarify the rules about contact involving goalies. In the wake of the Milan Lucic-Ryan Miller incident over the weekend, the 30 GMs spent Tuesday morning discussing goaltender safety. Lucic
NATIONAL EDMONTON - Hockey officials are calling the death of a 16-year-old player hit in the neck with a puck a freak accident. Kyle Fundytus was injured while blocking a shot during a midget AA
received a two-minute charging minor after crashing into Miller on Saturday night — the Sabres goalie was concussed on the play — but avoided a suspension from disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan because he claimed not to have done it on purpose. Understandably, the GMs are concerned about the safety of some of their most valuable players. *** GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Canada’s Ian Kent won a gold medal in table tennis at the Parapan American Games on Tuesday. The native of Eastern Passage, N.S., dropped the opener but roared back to win the next three sets against Brazil’s Paulo Salmin, 7-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-3. “This was very different from my other wins,” Kent said. “It was great to win gold for Canada.”

Less than three days into the Games, Canada has earned 23 medals. INTERNATIONAL NEW YORK, N.Y. NBA commissioner David Stern says it looks like the 2011-12 season really is in jeopardy after the players rejected the league’s latest proposal. Stern had urged players to take the deal on the table, saying it’s the best the NBA can offer and warned that decertification is not a winning strategy. In an interview with ESPN, Stern says the union’s decision to disband is a “big charade.” He says he believes the union is trying to see “if they can scare the NBA owners or something. That’s not happening.” *** FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The NFL is looking into an Internet video that appears to show New York Jets coach Rex Ryan using
an obscenity while angrily responding to a fan after the team’s 37-16 loss to the New England Patriots. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says Monday that the league is aware of the 48-second video, which shows the Jets walking off the field Sunday night. When Ryan appears, someone is heard yelling, “Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you,” referring to Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Ryan looks up and tells the fan to “shut up” while also using an obscenity. Ry a n w a s f i n e d US$50,000 by the Jets in 2010 after he was caught on a cellphone camera giving the middle finger to a fan during a mixed martial arts event in Florida. *** MARRAKECH, Morocco - Cameroon captain Samuel Eto’o and his teammates have gone on strike and refused to travel for a friendly against Algeria, saying they haven’t been
paid appearance money promised to them by their national federation. The players said they would not travel from Morocco to Algiers for Tuesday’s match after complaining for a week that their federation had not fulfilled promises over regular payments owed to them to join up with the national team. The dispute reportedly centres on a $30,000 appearance bonus for each player.

Humans Can Sprout New Blood Vessels DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I don’t remember you addressing this subject, so I thought I would write. In 1997, I had a mild heart attack and went on medicines. Six months later I had another mild incident that led me to angioplasty. Ever since, I have been eating well, exercising and taking all my meds. My cardiologist says I have great collaterals. I have sprouted new vessels for my heart. I thought I should have some kind of intervention, but the doctor says no. Can you discuss autogenesis? Am I related to a starfish? -- R.S. ANSWER: You’re the first writer ever to use the word “autogenesis.” If a starfish loses an arm, it grows another -- autogenesis. Humans have the same ability when it comes to blood vessels. They can grow new ones, and do so in many instances. Heart-attack victims often can sprout new arteries. It’s a long process.
gotten in the habit of drinking them far too often. He says they really do increase his energy. I’m worried that they might be dangerous. Will you please provide some information? -- B.B.
It doesn’t happen overnight. And it doesn’t happen to all people. Count yourself lucky. The booklet on CAD -- coronary artery disease -discusses how vessels become plugged and how they are treated. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You are familiar with energy drinks, aren’t you? Well, my teenage son has
ANSWER: One kind of energy drink is a mixture of caffeine and alcohol. In November 2010, the U.S. Food
• “During the holidays, our schedules change so much that it’s hard to keep track. I used to write and re-write our family calendar, but now I just make a grid for the days/weeks, and I use Post-it notes to enter parties, school obligations and anything that is a ‘maybe.’ It’s much easier to move around and add or delete events as needed.” -- A Reader, via email • “Fasten all buttons, snaps, fasteners and zippers on your clothes before washing and drying. It will help them keep their shape. Turn socks inside out, too. It will help prevent them from getting fuzzballs.” -- M.W. from Saskatchewan • “I pick up extra coffee mugs from second-hand stores, then clean and fill them with hot chocolate packets, small coffees and wrapped tea bags, and a few little chocolate bars. These make nice gifts for friends and service people. I am on a fixed budget, but I find I can be generous this way.” -- T.L. in North Carolina • When mailing packages, keep in mind that secure cargo is tightly packed. You don’t have to buy expensive packing peanuts or bubble wrap -- you can use what’s around. For in-
• “When mailing cookies, make sure they are packed well. Use an appropriate size container, and give layers some space by separating them with small sheets of bubble wrap. My cookies arrive intact every time.” -- J.J. in Florida • “I use a black permanent marker to ‘erase’ scuff marks on my black heels. I only wear them a couple of times a year, so I have to make them last. It works.” -- R.E. in Minnesota Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Adolescents drinking such large amounts of caffeine can suffer sleep disturbance, shaking hands and possibly a rise in blood pressure. One school district has banned these drinks at all practices and games. I think that’s a good policy. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer
individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Fasten all fasteners before doing laundry stance, plastic grocery bags are always in abundance. They can be tucked into any spare space and they barely weigh a thing. Same with newspaper; fill all the available space so that nothing bounces around in transit. Save your bubble wrap for the following tip.
and Drug Administration declared such combinations to be unsafe. I’m sure your son isn’t using this sort of energy drink. Others are. Your boy is likely drinking caffeinated beverages. The amount of caffeine in these drinks ranges from 50 to 505 mg of caffeine per can. A 6-ounce cup of coffee contains 77 to 150 mg of caffeine.

ESTEVAN THE ENERGY CITY
Construction BULLETIN… Water Main Replacement The City of Estevan is undertaking replacement of Water Main at: Souris Avenue – Seventh Street to King Street The purpose of this work is to provide timely and cost effective replacement of existing cast iron water main with PVC pipe, replacement of existing water and sanitary sewer services from water & sewer main up to the property line and surface restoration. This work would require closure of immediate areas of excavation and may necessitate parking restriction in adjacent areas. This work will commence during the week of August 22, 2011 (from Seventh Street) and will take approximately Eight (8) to Ten (10) Weeks to complete (subject to weather). Glen Peterson Construction Ltd. will perform this work within the current Bylaw regulations. Temporary Water Supply Temporary Supply of Water shall be made during the construction through the water tap outside the house during the week of August 22, 2010 (from Seventh Street). This may require crew to enter inside the house to complete the connection. This temporary supply may be connected up to 8 weeks. During this time water pressure may vary, however should not adversely affect appliances that use water. Interruption of water supply may result in some pockets and sediments enter in the plumbing. We advise that when water service is restored, please let each tap in house run for about 30 seconds or until water runs clear.
