Empowering youth to be the change Randy Fortes asks the groups sitting in circles around the gymnasium to put their knees together and instantly everyone gets a little closer. Fortes is one of two Challenge Day leaders who ran Grade 9 students as well as adults from around the community through his organization’s program this past week at the Estevan Comprehensive School. From Oct. 29 to Oct. 31 in Estevan and Nov. 1 in Lampman, students experienced what it means to be the change, as the program encourages students to share their stories so their peers can see how life is different for everyone. Fortes was in Estevan last March when Challenge Day was first introduced to the school. He returned with fellow Challenge Day leader Gina Pernini this week. “It’s amazing. I love coming back to a school,� said Fortes after Monday’s session. “(The students) came in pretty anxious and there was a lot of resistance in the beginning, but once they get that we are actually really here for them, that it’s about them and we really do care. As soon as we get past that everybody is fully involved.� He said it’s typical for the students to be shy or perhaps intimidated at the start of the day because Challenge Day turns many social norms on their head. “What we’re doing here is going against the grain of what normal culture is. We’re talking about being real,� said Fortes. “We’re talking about getting beyond the image, (because) in high school that’s the thing. You have to

Fortes still loves to see. “It’s rewarding for my heart,� he said. “To really be able put your heart into something and feel that reciprocated and get it back from the students. When I see them step out of themselves and see them do something they may not

The Estevan Comprehensive School played host to Challenge Day from Monday to Wednesday this past week. Grade 9 students from the school went through day-long sessions, and were encouraged to show their support for other students by displaying the hand signal saying “I love you�. find your clique, find your group and uphold the image of who people stamped you to be or who you are as a jock or a cheerleader, like you fit into these little boxes. We’re actually asking them to step out of that and be real.� Moira Grayson, an ECS teacher, participated in the event on Monday and said it’s always interesting to see students evolve over the course of the day. “Friends are really clinging together (at the start), and then gradually throughout the day they tend to get more relaxed and start to have some fun and also start to open up a little bit,� she said. “By the end of the day, everyone has experienced what it’s like to be the other people in the room and have an understanding of why they feel the way they do.� Fortes said it calls for students to step out of their comfort zone, but it’s important for peers to see

who they really are. He added that coming back to a school that he’s been to helps because he can see how the culture has already shifted in how students understand what is important to them. Fortes said when they come a second time, or third and fourth time as they will be coming back in 2013 and 2014, they can build upon the foundation they’ve already set in the school. The message Fortes hopes students will cling to is the organization’s slogan, Be the Change. “It’s about not standing there and just waiting for someone else to do this for you,� he said. “It’s about saying, ‘no, I have the power to actually create change in the school and change in my life. All I have to do is step into it.’ It’s about empowering them and giving them permission to step into that power.� He said young people may have something to say but may also feel that it isn’t their place to provide input. “Speak from your heart, speak what’s real and own your truth. Be you,� Fortes said of his advice for students. Grayson spoke to some

of the adult volunteers from the community who came in for the day, and found they were surprised at how much they got out of the program as well. “At the end of the day it was really nice to be able to thank them, because kids often think that the community doesn’t know about them and doesn’t really care about them, and this just proves that’s not true. There are so many adults willing to step up and be there for them.� Fortes has been a leader with Challenge Day for seven years and has seen many different schools across North America. He noted the economy has a big impact on the stories that he hears from students. “We usually wind up in the same place, but the journey is different. In more impoverished, loweconomy areas there is a lot of violence. Those days are a lot harder, but we always end up in the same place.� At the end of the day there are a lot of tears and a lot of hugs. The leaders ask all the participants to stand up, look around and give a hug to someone they have shared an experience with that day. It’s something

There are a few things everybody needs if they are going to grow a moustache for 30 days this Movember. The first is an empty hole where your shame would normally reside. The second is a desire to follow the crowd as a growing number of men are taking part in the monthlong moustachefest. The third is optional, but if you find it necessary, moustache wax. One of the first things you need to decide on Nov. 1 is what your moustache style is going to be. With moustache-growing skills as juvenile as mine, my options are limited. I’m not the Estevan Mercury’s web editor Rhys Kelso, who is something of a manscaping veteran. When deciding on a style, it’s important to consider how ridiculous you will look and balance it with getting into the spirit of the month. I initially considered handlebars, but my spirit could never defeat that amount of embarrassment. It might just have to be another year of a slightly red caterpillar strip resting under my nose. Moustaches, by their nature, are the most difficult accessories for a man to make work. Not many can do it, and I would never be so arrogant as to say that I am one of those men who can proudly sport a mo and still stand tall.

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers Movember is all about raising awareness and money for men’s health issues, with prostate cancer at the forefront. Women get October, so when everybody is tired of giving, we guys try to pick up the charitable scraps just as everybody else is gearing up for Christmas. There are many moustaches that inspire me, one of which is Lanny McDonald’s. He came to Estevan earlier this year with a lip sweater that could keep anybody warm throughout a Prairie winter. McDonald could compete in the World Beard and Moustache Championships and maybe even win that very real event. This year, Movember organizers have delved into the vault of Rudyard Kipling, with Movember Canada featuring a promotional video of moustachioed men during a recitation of his poem If. The words are intended to inspire a million mo’s, and that’s not a stretch with passages like “If you can

talk with crowds and keep your virtue/Or walk with kings, nor lose your common touch/If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you/If all men count with you, but none too much.” That’s just some sweet, sultry Kipling right there. Movember is also, unfortunately a time for butchering the beauty of language with horrible puns, like “father mo’s best.” As you track your moustache over the month, growth is called mo-gress. I guess men’s health has to take the good with the bad. The Baker side of my family has a pesky prostate problem, whereby absolutely everybody gets prostate cancer. Now it’s just one of those few things we do together as a family. Because of that, I will be growing my mo for my future self. Risk, uncertainty in farming but farmers endure As an agricultural journalist, nothing is better than spending time talking to people who are involved in the industry. I don't mean with me sitting there, pad and paper in hand, firing questions and recording the answers for some story. While that is the job, and it is usually as informative for me as it is readers of the stories, some of the best conversations have me holding a cup of coffee, not a pen, and simply talking about farming. Recently I have had that opportunity twice in very different circumstances, and in both cases the vision of farming for those I spoke with was rather unclear. In the first case, I was actually at a meeting of the local Canadian Association of Farm Advisors where I was the guest speaker for an early morning breakfast gathering. My topic was simple enough - some of the trends I see in farming, the debate of genetically modified technologies such as terminator and lethality genes, the potential of operator-less tractor drones, and how we balance grains for food or fuel. But the discussion turned to much more than a simple chat among people with like interests just having coffee around a table. That is where it became interesting.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist The biggest question we all ended up kicking around is what farms might look like in the years ahead. There is the now decades-long trend of ever-larger farms, and it was quickly agreed that trend was likely to continue. The real debate is where the move to everlarger farms will take us. There is a limit in regard to how large a farm that has any semblance of being a "family farm" can be. The day that someone wants out of farming, the ever-larger units require massive cash outlays in order to purchase them. There will always be buyers for land. It's a finite resource and retirement funds and offshore dollars will see the long-term value in a world of ever more people. Today there are boundaries to offshore purchases of farmland, but long term, those are likely to disappear in a

world where borders seem ever less important in terms of trade. The future seems almost assured to be one of fully corporate farms, where Canadian farmers are essentially tenant operators once more, not so different from the times when early settlers left Europe for a different future. But as they say, history does tend to repeat itself. The second impromptu meeting was at a coffee time at Heartland Livestock after a recent sale of Charolais genetics feeder cattle. The farmers at the table all raise cattle, an industry impacted by bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the recent past and now again by an E. coli scare. The future they see is one of uncertainty based on not only the issues specific to the cattle sector, but one based on razor-thin margins over the years, and the issues facing a world economy battered by the situation in several European countries and that of the United States. But they were all still willing to take the risks to keep raising cattle and to keep farming, and therein was the most compelling part of coffee, to see the producers dedicated to a vocation that is ever evolving but still one they love.

Adventures in pumpkin carving Before Growing up, my sisters and I always carved pumpkins for Halloween. Being the least artistic child (well, Janay and I are probably tied), I always did a poor job of it, choosing to stick to the classic “two eyes and a toothy grin� model. Mom and Dad always pretended that it looked as good as the others, but in my heart I knew I was a brutal pumpkin carver. Now that I’m a grown up, I don’t carve pumpkins anymore; I usually choose to appreciate them from afar. For example, Pinterest has lots of cool pumpkin carv-

ings that I browse through during boring lectures. I’ll never understand the people who look at these designs and think to themselves, “I’m totally going to try that.� For me, that’s akin to looking at a pyramid and thinking, “Can’t be that tough to build.� But this year, my dad grew pumpkins in his garden and I was encouraged (required) to take a few with me back to Regina for Halloween decorating. So here I am, the night before Halloween, preparing to decorate one of three pumpkins so I can say I am both a good daughter and a generic celebrator of

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me Halloween. (The remaining three pumpkins go to my boyfriend, who’s more of the ambitious type.) But rather than carving out my normal grimace, I’m going to steal an idea off Pinterest. Because on that site, there are tons of people just like me who

cannot wield a steak knife to create a masterful gourd. I’m going to melt crayons using a lighter to create an artistic design full of colour. This is a good idea because I have lots of crayons I’m not using and I can add sparkles to the melted wax to make my pumpkin

super pretty. There’s also a lower risk of me cutting myself with a knife, and I don’t have to scrape out the inside of my pumpkin and make a huge mess in my apartment. The risks include: burns, burning my apartment building down, running out of crayons, glitter everywhere. I think it’s worth a shot. I’ll finish this column with the results. After Relative success. I didn’t burn myself or anyone else, so that’s good, but my short attention span really hurt the overall quality of my work. It would have taken

me probably an hour to do a good job, but I scraped out a decent project in 30 minutes. So that’s something. 12 (2 1/2-inch) graham crackers 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free vanilla instant pudding mix 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 3/4 cups water 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free vanilla cook-andserve pudding mix 1 cup reduced-calorie cranberry juice cocktail 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries 1 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping 1. Evenly arrange 9 graham crackers in a 9-by9-inch cake pan. In a large bowl, combine dry instant pudding mix, dry milk powder and 1 1/4 cups water. Mix well using a wire whisk. Pour mixture evenly over graham crackers. Refrigerate while preparing cranberry sauce. 2. In a medium saucepan, combine dry cook-andserve pudding mix, cranberry juice cocktail, remaining 1/2 cup water and cranberries. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until cran-

As it stands, people need to request that their organs be used for further purposes, but it has been suggested that perhaps people should have to opt out of the organ donation registry. It was found that the generations who are most likely to need organs are the least likely to be registered organ donors. Certainly there are some people who wouldn’t qualify as donors because of health problems, but for the rest of us, is it a duty to donate organs to people in need when we no longer have any use for them? Organ donation perhaps shouldn’t be mandatory, but we could do something to encourage a culture of people who want to give to others in need. My parents didn’t force me to hold an organ donor card, but when I got my first driver’s licence, their opinion was that if you don’t need those organs anymore, it’s fair game for others. That rubbed off on me. It’s not something we should force on people, but fostering an attitude of charity is something that is vital in our society. There certainly isn’t any harm in expecting people to be helpful and doing what they can to ensure their neighbour is healthy. The organ donation game is one that helps everyone. They say each organ donor can potentially save eight lives. When we can do that kind of good, it’s totally worth it. We should want to help our neighbours. It’s one of the reasons why I support universal health care. We help our neighbours if they are sick. It’s something I consider to be a core Canadian value. A policy where everyone is automatically a donor unless they opt out is something I would have to support. – Jordan Baker

As much as I value organ donation, I don’t think making it mandatory is fair. First of all, people have a right to donate their organs, just as much as they have a right to keep them once they’re dead. It’s part of a human being and as far as I’m concerned, death doesn’t change that. Just because someone dies doesn’t mean I can loot their house. That house belongs to the dead person’s family (or whomever it was left to) and a corpse full of organs is no different. If a family wants their great aunt buried with her extremely healthy heart and lungs, that’s just fine. Also, some cultures consider organ donation wrong, or they define death differently. Some Asian cultures don’t consider “brain death� to be actual death like we do here in the western world, so harvesting kidneys from a body in which the heart still beats is definitely not an option like it is here. Telling a person with these beliefs that it’s mandatory to donate organs definitely infringes on their right to practise their own religion, a chartered freedom in Canada. Organ donation definitely has benefits, as anyone with a donated heart or lung will tell you. But donating organs is a choice and shouldn’t be made mandatory. The only thing that should be mandatory is for the family to have to donate the organs of someone who chose to be an organ donor before dying. I’ve heard stories of families who chose to keep their relative’s organs even though the relative indicated wishing to donate. That’s not fair. People should have to respect the wishes of the deceased, considering those donated organs could help a lot of people. – Tonaya Marr

Highway flagman turkey shoot When one starts a big-inch pipeline job, the safety orientation takes a good chunk of the day. Part of that orientation focuses on being a flagman. Whenever a piece of equipment crosses a road, or is working adjacent to the road, you need two people out there with vests and stop signs, one in each direction. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dirt trail on which the last traffic was guys on horses chasing buffalo, you need your fl agmen. When crossing pavement, you also have a handful of labourers and oilers, running rubber tires across the pavement for the tracked equipment to drive on. They also like to have a truck with blinking lights in each direction too, as an added precaution. In some cases, you don’t shut down traffi c, you just slow it down. This was the case in 1998 when I spent part of July working in the median of Highway 1 just west of the White City Esso. We were working on the very long, very difficult road bore which sent a 36-inch line across four lanes of the TransCanada Highway and the north side service road.

It was something like 800 metres of boring. The excavator I was assigned to was tasked with digging a sight hole right in the middle of the highway median. We needed to see where the boring machine was going so that it wasn’t working its way towards one of the other pipelines in the same right of way. That would have spelled disaster. We couldn’t shut down the highway, but we also couldn’t have wide loads driving past at highway speeds as the counterweight of the excavator was swinging into the line of traffic. Therefore the left lane in each direction was shut down, but traffic was still allowed past at reduced speed. This was the “orange zone,� where the traffi c was supposed to slow to 60 km/h. That was a joke. A few times, I was tasked with standing on the highway with my stop/ slow sign, with the purpose of slowing down traffic. I soon realized that I was like a big gobbling bird in a turkey shoot. Cars don’t slow down. Maybe half of them slowed.

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile The rest only took their foot off the gas momentarily. Others just kept going. Indeed, since the usual clip is around 110-120 km/h on that stretch of highway, it was something akin to standing on the edge of a racing track. There were several times where a car whizzed by so fast I was tempted to throw my sign into their windshield. This was the deterrence method my excavator operator preached, but I think he was bluffing. I only did this duty sparingly, but it was enough to ratchet my stress level to the max. It was a fight or flight reflex, and any fight with a moving car or semi, you lose. Thankfully we soon moved on, and I spent the next three months standing in swamps. At least there were no sports cars barrelling down on me at 120 km/h.

The tragic incident of a flag person being mowed down at Midale this past summer was wrong on so many levels. It was wrong that the young, 18 yearold woman was killed. It was wrong she was killed on the first day of the job.

(Young, green hands are typically the most likely to get hurt, or killed, on the job.) It was wrong that this young woman from New Brunswick came to Saskatchewan to work, and found death instead. It was wrong that her unborn child was killed with her. Wrong, wrong, wrong. wrong. On Halloween while heading to Weyburn, I will yet again drive past the roadside memorial to her and her child - the hard hat and high visibility vest on a white cross, and a smaller

cross beside it. In last week’s speech from the throne, the provincial government announced it will be bringing in photo radar to enforce speed limits in the orange zone. I hate the very idea of photo radar. But after having been in the turkey shoot known as flagging, I can’t see a better alternative, other than throwing signs at the drivers. Curt Dagenais was hoping to have his convictions overturned by the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. Dagenais admitted shooting the officers after a chase on country roads near Spiritwood in 2006, but claimed it was self-defence. The appeal claimed the trial judge made an error when it failed to put the defence of provocation to the jury. But the three-judge panel dismissed the appeal as soon as it had finished hearing arguments. Dagenais was convicted in 2009 of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of RCMP constables Marc Bourdages and Robin Cameron, as well as the attempted

murder of another officer. *** REGINA - Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall wants to grow a moustache for Movember despite the disappointment of his staff and — more importantly — his wife. Wall says that’s because they’ve seen pictures of him from the 1980s when he had a ‘stache and they think it looks dumb. Movember is a campaign that encourages clean-shaven men to grow a moustache in November to raise awareness for prostate cancer. Wall says he will go ahead if $3,000 is raised by Nov. 1. However, the fair-haired Wall admits there might not be a noticeable difference even by the end of November because the fuzz on his face doesn’t grow very quickly. The premier also jokes

that he’s not sure what colour the moustache will be. National OTTAWA - Federal accounts say the government lost $1.9 million last year in pilfered property, including vehicles, laptops, smart phones, cameras, furniture and even several dozen military weapons. Another $8.6 million worth of government property — including some 2,700 more weapons — was lost, damaged or destroyed accidentally. A lengthy list of lost, stolen, damaged or mislaid articles is contained in the public accounts for the fiscal year 2011-12. They added that the area had been sealed off and there was no immediate concern the bomb would explode. The Big Six Hockey League regular season kicks off next weekend. The Bienfait Coalers are coming off their second straight league title and look forward to further building on that success.

Coalers set sights on successful season The Big Six Hockey League is about to get underway with last year’s championship finalists expecting big things for 2012-13. The Big Six’s most successful franchises in the past few years, the Bienfait Coalers are coming off back-to-back league championships and an appearance in the senior A provincial finals last season, while the Midale Mustangs have come up short in the league finals the past two years, following three straight championship campaigns. The two teams will face each other on this year’s opening night as the Coalers head to Midale on Nov. 9. Coalers manager Trevor Dutka said there are high expectations for the defending champions heading into the coming season. “Our goals are always the same, that is to go out and play our best and hopefully bring home another Big Six championship,� he said. “Last year we did have a hiccup at the end of the year where we lost in the provincial final, but I think we’re setting that as a goal to repeat into the final at least, and then hopefully bring home that championship also.� Dutka attributes the team’s recent success to sticking to their game plans throughout the year as well as shoring up their defensive side. “Defensively three years ago when we lost the championship, that was one of the things that we wanted to improve on. We are definitely protecting (goaltender) Jackson Walliser a lot more. Defensively we’ve been very sound.� Last year the Coalers allowed the fewest goals

throughout the season, with just 51 finding their net in 20 games. Walliser led all goaltenders last year with a 2.22 goals against average in 17 starts. The Bienfait squad will be very similar to last year, as Dutka said nothing needs fixed if nothing on the team is broken. Some players have moved away so there are a few lineup changes. He noted they have added former Estevan Bruin Riley Tetreault, who played two years in Estevan between 2007 and 2009. The Midale Mustangs are also coming off a string of successful seasons, reaching the league final series in each of the last five years. They won three championships in consecutive years before falling to the Coalers in the last two seasons. Myles Hoium, manager and one of the coaches for the Mustangs, said they’ve had a good mixture of local players and imports in the past few years, and it’s led to a good product on the ice. “We have some pretty good support out of Estevan and Weyburn of guys coming out, and that’s helped us out quite a bit,� said Hoium. “It’s pretty tough to win with just locals now too. You can run with them, but you have to have some imports just for the numbers alone.� While the team wants to register at least 20, and ideally 25 players, recruiting from outside the Midale community is necessary to stay competitive. “It’s been pretty fortunate to get that support from the cities.� As far as roster changes are concerned, Hoium said the Mustangs will be a considerably different team on the ice. They are bringing in some players

from Macoun and Goodwater as well as some veteran Mustangs who are coming back for another season after an absence. There are others from Estevan who were playing elsewhere in the league and have come in to play for Midale this year. Hoium said he’s hoping to find more success on the ice this year, but noted that the league could be particularly competitive. “We’re hoping to stay in the top end of the league if we can,� added Hoium. “I’ve heard some stories of Carnduff being pretty good this year, which will be good for the league. It’s nice to keep a balanced league where anybody can beat anybody.�

End of an era for the Yankees? Are the New York Yankees at a crossroads? Will the start of the 2013 season mark the beginning of a new era for the Bronx Bombers? Now that Major League Baseball has wrapped up for the season, it’s never too early to start looking ahead, especially since there’s no NHL hockey to obscure the view. When you look at the Yankees, you can’t help but wonder whether the iconic team’s Big Three - Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez - will still be wearing the pinstripes when the team gathers in Florida next March.

The Yankees had the American League’s best record during 2012, but their playoffs ended with a whimper - four straight losses to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Championship Series. Jeter didn’t finish that game after suffering a broken ankle while falling awkwardly after scampering to his left for a ground ball. He’s 38, and the ankle repair might take four or five months. He’s doubtful to start the season. Rivera, undoubtedly the game’s best relief pitcher of all time (and absolutely amazing in the post-season), missed most of the 2012

Riders out of time to reach top form There are very few positives one can take out of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ current three-game losing streak. Really the only one that comes to mind is the fact they ARE on a losing streak, which will eventually end, and a winning streak could be just around the corner. It had better be, because the playoffs start in two weeks! The latest defeat was another close one, 31-26 to the visiting Toronto Argonauts at a frigid Mosaic Stadium on Saturday. It was -9 C with the wind chill, but it felt a lot colder. Ironically it was the Argos who came out hot, jumping to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. They were in control all the way. The loss dropped the Riders’ record to 8-9 and

now they need a win at B.C. on Saturday to ensure Corey Chamblin doesn’t have a losing record in his rookie season has head coach. Really that’s all that’s at stake, semantics, because the team will be going on the road to either Calgary or Toronto for a division semifinal. Minor hockey coach receives 10-year ban National MONTREAL - It’s 10 years in the penalty box for an amateur coach who punched a player in the head. Quebec’s minor-hockey association has handed down a decade-long suspension to the midget-level coach who took a swing at a 16-year-old player last weekend. The incident occurred during a Quebec midget A game. A scuffle occurred in the dying moments of a heated contest between teams from Chicoutimi and Jonquiere. During that melee near the bench Andre Harvey, a coach with the Jonquiere Pumas, delivered a punch to an opposing player who was wearing a helmet. The incident was caught on video and drew media attention. The volunteer coach has admitted to the incident, and apologized, but he says the landed punch was an accident. Hockey Quebec says that apology isn’t enough. In a statement Friday, it said the coach had a responsibility to set an example and that his behaviour violated the basic principles of amateur coaching. The organization said it concluded, following an investigation by its regional disciplinary committee, that the act was deliberate. *** TORONTO - Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero was expected to need six weeks of recovery time after undergoing arthroscopic left elbow surgery. The routine procedure was performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum after the regular season ended to clean up the left elbow area, the team said Tuesday in a release. Romero also received PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatments to both knees to enhance the recovery of his quadriceps tendinitis. The 27-year-old southpaw struggled last season. He finished with a 9-14 record and 5.77 earned-run average. Romero left his last start of the season on Sept. 30 after only three innings due to a left leg injury. His off-season throwing program and readiness for spring training were not expected to be affected by the procedures, the team said. *** He has been named Canadian thoroughbred racing’s top conditioner four times and is closing in on a sixth trainer’s title

This weekend, Casse will saddle five horses in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita in search of that elusive first win on thoroughbred racing’s grandest stage. Casse has had 10 horses race in the Breeders’ Cup, his best finish being second in ‘08 with Sealy Hill, a 48-1 longshot with Patrick Husbands of Brampton, Ont., aboard. Costume Contest For The Pets

It was time for the pets to sparkle in their Halloween costumes on the night of Thursday, Oct. 25 at the Estevan Shoppers Mall. The costume contest attracted several dogs and their owners with the judging done by the Estevan Humane Society volunteer directors and proceeds were directed to the society. Prizes were donated by the Mall and corporate sponsors and they were awarded for such things as best behaved pet, cutest pet/costume, most original costume and funniest entry. Dogs and owners had a good time getting to know one another.

Hot flashes can last into the 70s

ANSWER: It’s said that 8 percent of women still have hot flashes into their 70s. Most women get over them in six months to five years after menopause. The drop in estrogen production that occurs with menopause affects a part of the brain that regulates body temperature. The brain’s thermostat is thrown out of whack, and the result is spells of sudden, uncomfortable warming with sweating. Let me give you the usual recommendations made for control of hot flashes. I’m pretty sure you must have tried them after more than 20 years of putting up with flashes. Dress in layers so that outer garments can be shed at the first inkling of a hot flash. That can keep it from becoming a full-blown one. Keep ice water on hand and drink it at the start of a flash. Cut back on caffeine. Slow, deep breathing at the onset of a flash is said to minimize it. Estrogen, which you have tried, is the most effective treatment for flashes. It should be taken in as low a dose as possible for the shortest time possible. Maybe

a different estrogen preparation would work for you. Effexor and Lexapro, two antidepressants, have met with success in suppressing hot flashes for some women. Here they are not used for their antidepressant action. It’s an example of medicines that have more than one function. Neurontin (gabapentin) is a seizurecontrol medicine that is also used for control of hot flashes. Hot flashes that have lasted as long as yours call for a consideration of conditions other than estrogen deprivation. An overactive thyroid gland, a hidden infection and two unusual tumors -- carcinoid and pheochromocytoma -- are examples of illnesses that produce symptoms similar to a hot flash. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 84 years old. Recently I had a CT scan of my abdomen. It revealed multiple diverticula in the sigmoid colon. Will you please explain diverticulitis to me, and what I can expect from it? -- H.T.

Diverticulitis is inflammation of diverticula. It happens to only a few people with diverticulosis. Fiber also will prevent inflammation from developing.
