“Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero” by Chris Matthews (Simon & Schuster, $27.50) Reviewed by Larry Cox

My name is Dewly. I have long hair and I am a male. I am about 11 weeks old. My friend is Buffy and we have a lot of fun playing together.

Although there have been dozens of books written about our 35th president, this one humanizes John F. Kennedy in such a way that he is accessible to many of us, perhaps for the first time. Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s “Hardball,”

sifted through the memories of many of JFK’s closest friends, including prepschool classmates, war buddies and political associates. The result is an intimate portrait that reveals not the Jack Kennedy you remember or think you know, but the man behind the myth. Most of Kennedy’s childhood was spent in and out of infirmaries and hospitals. He was a sick, lonely child who was in bed more often than not, and almost always with a book. He suffered from both Addison’s Disease and a back problem for most of his life. Instead of becoming a young athlete, he was an incessant reader. Kennedy was able to

join the U.S. Navy during World War II only after passing the physical on his second attempt. He became a young skipper who saved his crew after their PT 109 was chopped in half by a Japanese destroyer. The amazing thing about Jack Kennedy is how he stepped out of the shadows of his father and older brother to become his own man. Against all odds, this big-eared, skinny kid nicknamed “Ratface” overcame all obstacles because of his focus, determination and motivation. He even challenged the political system of Boston, which ultimately helped pave his path to the White House. As Matthews writes, the Kennedy his research found was “a fighting prince never free of pain, never far from trouble, never accepting the world he found and never wanting to be his father’s son.” He adds that Kennedy was “a far greater hero than he ever wished us to know.” Perhaps this is why he’s still remembered with such high regard almost 50 years after his tragic death in Dallas. Money Problems?

Student members of the social justice club at the Estevan Comprehensive School fill shoe boxes of goods to be sent off as gifts to children in a third-world country as part of Operation Christmas Child.

Christmas operation sends shoe boxes of gifts This week a truckload of gifts packaged in shoe boxes was taken away to be delivered to less fortunate children in other parts of the world. The Estevan Comprehensive School donated 115 shoe boxes of goodies that most of the youth in Canada may consider to be ordinary. For the children who will be receiving the school supplies and clothes, the gifts mean a great deal. They mean an education as well as a chance to play. This year Margaret Duncan, teacher and co-ordinator of the social justice club, which organizes this campaign, said the boxes’ destination is Haiti. Students at ECS have been preparing shoe boxes of goods since the beginning of November, in anticipation of loading up the truck for its departure this week. The boxes are collected and sent out so the less fortunate will have something to open on Christmas morning. Duncan and Ashley

Cote started the social justice club at the school two years ago, and 12 students are now involved. The round up of boxes is one of the club’s yearly projects. The club asked firstperiod classes to collect items that would be suitable for a Christmas shipment to the children in need. Brayden Gervais, a Grade 11 student, has been in the club for two years and was out encouraging everyone he knew to donate something to the cause. “For Operation Christmas Child, the members of the social justice club have been promoting the activity in the school. We have been collecting items for our period one classes and bringing them in,” said Gervais. The campaign closed on Monday when the club went to each class first thing in the morning to retrieve the donations. Individuals could also donate money, which is used mostly to cover costs of shipping, and the school

U-

raised $881.25 by the final count on Tuesday. After school on Tuesday, club members were packing all the toys and school goods into shoe boxes, some for boys and others for girls. They would be sent to the Alliance Church in Estevan, before heading to Calgary and then on to Haiti, said Duncan. For the past month, the students involved have been raising awareness of their campaign. “We’ve been telling all our friends, all our families to donate to the school or just donate to the church locally,’ said Gervais. “I think it’s for a really great cause, and I think it’s really good what we’re doing, giving less fortunate kids overseas a chance to have a good Christmas like we would have here.” “They do the 30-hour famine as well, and we like to make the students aware of days that come along that look at stereotyping and other social issues,” said Duncan.

Cote noted the school has been involved in the Operation Christmas Child program for a number of years, annually getting into the holiday spirit of giving to a cause that sees children receive school supplies and toys. She said that since the social justice club was started, this campaign fits under the type of projects that they have, so they have taken over the organizing for the time being. For Gervais, he takes part because he wants to help the less fortunate, so they can enjoy some of the comforts that everyone else does. “It’s really important for me to get involved in this, and to make the world a better place. That’s what the social justice club is aimed at doing,” he said, adding that he gets involved because “I feel like I’m doing something good for the community and everywhere as a whole. It’s been really good to promote social justice in the school and in Estevan.”

The world of financial mumbo jumbo It’s Financial Literacy Month. How’s my financial literacy? In Grade 10, Ontario students have to pass a literacy test. If you fail, you take it every year until you pass it. Not many people fail, but if I were to take a financial literacy test now, I would absolutely fail. Me looking at financial stuff is like Vince Young looking at anything other than a playbook. Everybody praised the documentary Inside Job because of the good job it did at explaining the 2008 financial meltdown in the U. S. in such basic layman’s terms. I didn’t understand a thing that happened in that movie. I just know Wall Street did some bad stuff and is now being occupied for it. My financial know-how goes about this far: buy low and sell high, pay my credit card off in time and don’t give money to the African prince who’s desperately asking for my help in an urgent e-mail. That’s about it. I don’t invest my money. My dad tells me I should invest and that I should learn about it, but I just give him some money and tell him to turn into more by the time he gives it back to me. He’s my

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers financial guru. He does my taxes and gives me all the money advice I never listen to. He told me to open this account at the bank that would allow me to buy stock. I did exactly that. It sat around for a year or two and I didn’t think about it again until I found out the bank was taking money from it. I took all the cash out of there as fast as I could, which is pretty fast thanks to online banking. I wasn’t using the account for its intended purpose, so it was just costing me to keep money there. The account is still open, but now there are just zero dollars in there, so if he asks me if I still have that account, I can say yes. My dad will tell me about what I should be doing to invest. The Canada Pension Plan won’t be around when, or if, I retire, so I will

need to create my own wealth somehow. My dad has informed me of what I should do to save, but I still don’t know how. I know that it is good for me, the same way spinach is good for me, but I never buy spinach. I’m a chronic procrastinator, so just because I know something is good for me doesn’t mean I will do anything about it until it absolutely has to get done. Even then it depends on how good a sleep I had the night before. The latest investment my dad wants me to get into is the tax-free savings account, except he gave me a great opportunity to procrastinate. Apparently I can put money into these accounts at any time. I can still put in the maximum for the first year the accounts were made available. So in 30 years, when I get around to it, I can open up a TFSA and put in $5,000 for the first year it was available. What’s the hurry? I’ll miss out on $200 of interest, but that’s only going to be half a tank of gas in 30 years. In the world of finances, I’m lost, and being a naive young person, that’s kind of how I like it.

Supply management shows real agriculture costs One thing has never made sense to me, and that is how we seem so interested in tossing aside the supply-managed sectors of farming. In the past we have heard groups such as APAS (Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan ) talk about what grain farmers really need is a pricing system reflective of the cost of production. At their core, that is one of the foundations of supply-management systems. Dairy and poultry producers receive a price that reflects at least a portion of the industry’s general costs associated with producing a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs or a pound of turkey. The idea of producers recouping their costs should be central to any farm program - from a coffee producer in South America benefiting from fair trade sales - to a dairy producer in Ontario, or a grain grower on the Canadian Prairies. Interestingly consumers are only impacted marginally by having farmers recover their costs. A nickel on every loaf of bread would go a long way to helping farmers manage a consistent profit when you place that nickel on every loaf a bushel of wheat produces. However there is a feeling out there that we would be better off dismantling supply management in an effort to secure market access for other farm commodities. Now if we take a moment to consider

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist how well the world marketplace does for farmers, we come to realize that as many years as they pay prices generating profits for farmers, they have a seemingly equal number of years where farmers need government support programs to keep them viable. That’s the other side of supply management. There is an element to control production levels to basically match domestic consumption. Markets usually rise and fall based on supply and demand. High prices send farmers into a lemming-like rush to boost production in order to grab the high prices. As a result, supply soon exceeds demand and like those same lemmings, prices crash off the cliff. Sheldon Wilcox, manager of DLMS Alberta, a speaker at this year’s Grain Millers Harvest Showdown, summed it up rather well. Wilcox said he sees “two, three, maybe four years,” of good prices ahead in the cattle sector, adding “if I had to guess, I’d say four.” In fact Wilcox said strong prices will

stay until the industry “screws up and overproduces. “And we will,” he said. Supply management helps eliminate the ebb and flow of returns. But apparently that’s a bad thing. Many seem to want to toss the dairy and poultry sectors into the same market uncertainty as wheat and cattle. You would think we’d be better off trying to get other farm commodities to the same place as dairy and poultry, that being one where returns at least have some correlation to costs, and consumers pay a price in the store that also has greater connection to farm costs. Some argue supply management makes food costs higher than they should be. Perhaps higher than they could be, because dismantling the system will lead to lower farmer returns, but they are not higher than they should be because they reflect some real farm production costs. Canada’s effort to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership seems to be fuelling the current debate, since supply-management appears a chip Canada would put in the table to get a deal. The supply management chip may get us into a new trade deal, but the dairy and poultry sectors will be dragged down into the same pit where returns often fail to meet costs, and somehow that is hard to justify as progress.

I’m stealing your ideas Coming up with a column subject this week was a challenge. In other words, I don’t have any ideas of my own and took suggestions from my Facebook friends. Everyone seemed to have decent suggestions, and rather than choosing between them and risking hurting someone’s feelings, I’m just going to comment on everyone’s column idea individually. But I won’t name names, to keep things anonymous. 1) Generational gap: parents just do not understand the appeal of tattoos, and the change in what’s appropriate for suitors. I know all about this. I’m not allowed to get a tattoo or a piercing until I graduate from university. Apparently they’re not attractive? As for the change in what’s appropriate for introducing dates to parents, I can’t speak much for this. The tactic among my sisters and I has generally been to tell scary stories about my

U.S. Congress has time to decide what counts as a vegetable, but cannot figure out their budget problems? Also, this seems like a huge waste of time. I wonder which pizza company was whispering in Congress’s collective ears? Good thing there aren’t bigger problems in the world right now than whether or not pizza is enough of a vegetable to be served in schools. That’s all for this week. Two more weeks of school until I can dedicate my full mental capacity to my column. Exciting! When my parents ask why guys don’t come up to the door and introduce themselves, we just explain that they’re terrified of Dad, whether or not it’s true. He seems to find that satisfying, so everyone wins. 2) Facebook and Twitter addictions. I don’t know anything about this. “Addiction has such a negative connotation and I don’t see anything bad about spending time on Facebook. I mean, the first thing I do in the morning is check my social networks. Then when I get to school, I immediately sign into Twitter and Facebook. And then check them continuously throughout the day. Nothing about this spells addiction. Nothing about the-year holiday plans could be disrupted by something out of your control, but stay the course. Ultimately, things will settle back into a normal pace. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your honest approach to a workplace project earns you both respect and credit from those in charge. Meanwhile, that personal problem still needs to be dealt with. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Money could be a little tight this month. This means the usually bargain-oblivious Sagittarian should look for ways to save on end-of-theyear holidays. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Examine the facts, and you might find that it’s a wiser move to shift gears and re-

direct some of your goals before the end of the year. Someone close to you offers good advice. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful that your generosity is not abused. Find out more, both about the special favors you might be asked to grant and who is asking for them. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’ve come through a recent rough time in great shape. Congratulations. Now go out and enjoy your well-earned rewards. More good news comes in mid-December. BORN THIS WEEK: You aim for truth, and you usually find it. When is it OK for a teacher and a student to be Facebook friends?

He She He She Said By: Jordan Baker

Teachers and students probably should be Facebook friends just because a lot of schooling can be done online. Classes can be organized into groups on the social network and students can ask questions through the site if, for instance, they are doing homework or writing an essay and need some clarification on something. From my little knowledge of Facebook, I believe they would need to be friends in order for them to part of the same group. That could be wrong. The teacher wouldn’t have to be the only one who provided answers to these questions. An over-achieving student could pipe in with an answer, and the teacher could simply oversee the conversation to make sure answers are provided correctly. Kind of like how Wikipedia entries are moderated by Big Brother. Teachers can use Facebook as a tool. If that’s where the kids are these days, then teachers may as well try to incorporate a virtual classroom into that network. There are also some invisible lines that shouldn’t be crossed by teachers or students. As I’m not a teacher, I may see that line differently, but my grandpa and one of my best friend’s fathers were high school teachers, so I’ve picked up a bit about what these indiscretions are through them. A Facebook friendship should probably only be used for educational purposes. I haven’t taught anything before, but I have been a coach, and I think the roles are pretty similar in their interaction with students or players. To be a coach there is a training session so you can have a card that says you’re allowed and qualified. There is also a part of that session devoted to telling you how not to put yourself in a bad situation with one of your players. Don’t ever be alone with them and never drive them home, is basically what you need to know. Facebook is a social network so there are lots of people who can oversee what is happening, but I’m sure there will soon be, if there isn’t already, training and guidelines for teachers to follow when dealing with students on social media. It should be deemed a good tool for school.

3-419 Kensington, Estevan, SK S4A 2H8 (Strip Mall by Wal-Mart)

Social networks are awesome. It’s great for connecting with friends and family that you don’t always see. It’s also great for just maintaining friendships from day to day. But it doesn’t come with an etiquette manual, and the details of “when to friend” are never clear. One problem that is faced in schools is when is it OK to add your teacher as a friend on Facebook. For high school and elementary school, I think the golden rule is do not friend. Teachers, your 15-year-old students do not need to see your sloppy drunk pictures. This rule can also be applied to friends of siblings more than four years younger than you. It’s kind of like friending the kids you used to babysit: really not a good idea until they’re old enough to be in the bar, too. University is a bit of a different story. I’ve had profs put invites to Facebook friend them on their syllabi. I had an English prof who let us watch his homemade rap videos during class. And for some reason, neither situation seemed weird at the time. I’ve actually kept in touch with the rapping English prof through Facebook and he’s been a great reference and friend as I’ve made my way through my university career. So I don’t see anything wrong with Facebook friendships between university students and university professors. Everyone is an adult. The posting pictures from parties really stops being a craze after high school, so there are fewer drunk Facebook pictures for everyone to see anyway. So to summarize: do not friend your high school students. The age and maturity difference is just too much. But it’s OK for friendships between university students and professors to exist. In fact, I recommend them. They are great for networking and honestly, when you know your prof reads your news feed, you’re going to self-censor your posts. It’s kind of like when your boss follows you on Twitter.

I am a very athletic person and injured my ankle. I could hardly flex or stretch my ankle. It even bothered me to walk. After only one Radio Frequency treatment I had significant pain relief and almost full movement back in my ankle. This is a remarkable treatment and I would recommend this treatment to anyone that is experiencing any type of muscle or joint pain. Thank you so much Bell Medical! ~ Female - Age 26

Craft Show a busy time for early Christmas shoppers For those who wished to start their Christmas shopping early this year, the Kinette Club hosted its 28th annual Craft Show to give just such an opportunity. The Wylie Mitchell Hall was bursting at the seams with close to 40 vendors, featuring everything from baked goods and ornaments, to books and niche gift ideas. Kinette member and craft-show organizer Melanie Tribiger said there was some concern in the days leading up to the event because some of the vendors had told her they heard a rumour the show was cancelled. Of course, the show was to go on, and despite that seed being planted,

More than 650 people attended the Kinette Craft Show on the weekend. Visitors to the show had lots of choice as where to go, with more than 35 vendors on site. nothing more grew out of it, and each of the 37 expected vendors showed up.

has chaired the event for the last three years. “The ones I spoke to said they had a really good day. They’re coming back.” Next year’s craft show is planned to continue the tradition, to be held on the same weekend and same place as it has since the event was turned over to the Kinettes from the Quota Club five years ago. More than 650 people came through the hall’s doors over the weekend. Tribiger said for a lot of them, it’s the first shopping they do with the Christmas season in mind. Bringing shoppers into the craft

The vendors were happy with the setup and turnout, said Tribiger, who

The event also added the involvement of another local organization, with Estevan Minor Football being called in for take down after the show ended. Now that it’s gone, people have a whole year to look forward to the 29th annual show next year, which Tribiger assured is already a go. 11114MS01

Prentice can keep his BlackBerry Jim Prentice, a former federal industry minister, and vice-chairman of CIBC, wrote in the Nov. 21 Globe and Mail “I’m keeping my BlackBerry.” He made a stirring argument in favour of Research in Motion, the Canadian technology champion. He spoke of how it has increased his productivity. “RIM has had its share of challenges and critics lately. But it isn’t the first technology company to face technical problems or fierce competition in a changing market. IBM, Microsoft and even the current high flier, Apple, have all had their difficult periods,” he wrote. Sure. That’s great. I loved my BlackBerry too. But that’s not going to stop

me from putting an iPhone 4S under the Christmas tree for little ole me, and if she’s good, maybe my wife, too. I loved my BlackBerry, but it’s soon going to end up in the kids’ toy box along with all the other retired cellphones for them to play with. I’ve been pining for an iPhone for a while. There are so many things you can do, with literally hundreds of thousands of apps. As for my BlackBerry Curve 8330? Not so much. I only have a dozen or so loaded, and several no longer work, like, for instance, my Globe and Mail app. Or my banking app. Oops. Would you believe I can get apps that allow me to control my Nikon camera (with the addition

use it that often, so no big loss there. I won’t miss the crappy built in camera on the Curve. The iPhone camera was recently praised by Annie Leibovitz, one of the greatest photographers of all time. Many pro photographers are now using it as their carry around pocket camera, and that was before the iPhone 4S camera update. The BlackBerry tablet, the Playbook, is a poor answer to the iPad. I played numerous times with a relative’s, and was not impressed. Maybe that’s why it is being discounted so heavily for the Christmas season. What’s a 60 per cent price cut after half a year on the market? It’s highly indicative of

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile of a netbook or specialized add-on) from an iPhone? I can actually see the liveview image, on the phone, before I even click it? That’s pretty impressive. What really cheesed me off was a support call to SaskTel. A while back, RIM came out with a new operating system. RIM says my BlackBerry can support OS 6. SaskTel won’t allow me to upgrade beyond OS 4.5, and there’s nothing I can do about it except buy a

new phone. I don’t want to buy a new phone. I want to be able to do all the things the phone I have already paid for is capable of. The phone has been reliable, except for the occasional purple screen of death that requires the battery to be removed and replaced, followed by a lengthy boot-up. The killer app, BlackBerry Messenger, I will miss, since apparently my whole family has BlackBerries. But I don’t

RIM’s fall from grace that no less than a former industry minister felt obliged to write a cheerleading letter to a national newspaper saying he supports the BlackBerry. By saying “I’m keeping my BlackBerry,” the corollary is that one is assumed to soon be dumping it, most likely in favour of the iPhone. The BlackBerry is a competent Smartphone, but it’s no iPhone. RIM needs to knock it out of the park soon, or suffer ending up on the technological scrap heap. The market is voting with its feet. I just hope SaskTel doesn’t run out of iPhones before Christmas. This apple didn’t fall too far from the tree There is a saying that most of you probably know. It goes like this: “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” This saying has become very real to me in the last few weeks through my eldest daughter, Sophia. I recently received an e-mail from her language arts teacher, regarding a recent writing assignment she had handed in and it was titled “OMG (Oh My Goodness).” The content of the e-mail was as follows: “Hey Susan. OMG! Did you read Sophia’s eulogy speech? She totally made me cry. That girl is extremely talented!!!!!! Must be her fabulous teacher. Seriously, I’d love to take the credit, but I’m sure her mom has more to do with it!!!!!!! Fantastic writer!!!!!” Being a writer and one who expresses myself through the written and spoken word, I’m sure you can imagine how overjoyed I was to receive such a lovely e-mail and, from a teacher. I was coming to understand, that my daughter, at the tender age of 12, was indeed a gifted writer. So, today I would like to share her assignment with you. The class assignment was to write a eulogy about something (thankfully not someone). They had to pick something and write about it and then present in front of the class. Sophia wrote ever so beautifully, and with poise and elegance presented her writing to her class. Through her writing, I have come to understand the saying about the apple and the tree so much more. I don’t think this little apple has fallen far from

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life the tree and maybe I, as an apple, didn’t fall far from the tree of my origin either, both of my parents are accomplished writers. It must be in the genes. I hope you enjoy! The Difference Between a House and a Home By Sophia Sohn: March 12, 2011 It was a simpler time, when all I needed to be entertained for hours at a time was a piece of paper and a crayon. Like most five-year-olds, my drawings were usually pink and they were usually of princesses, fairies and castles. They were drawings that showed who I was and who I wanted to be. I was going to be a princess, and I would have a gorgeous prince, and we would live together in our castle. In reality my castle was located on 18 Old Glenhaven Road, Sydney, Australia. There were no turrets, no moats, no knights in shining armour and there was absolutely nothing pink about this house. I never realized how much I loved my house until it was gone. It wasn’t a huge house. It wasn’t little either. The simplicity of it was what made it beautiful. Maybe I was the only person that thought it was beautiful. Maybe I was the only one who enjoyed the swing set outside. Maybe I was the only one who liked my small wooden cubby

laugh and watched me cry; and it watched me run to it and it watched me run away from it. I’ve come to a point in my life where I’ve had to learn to give up things, and sacrifice things for other people. When my parents told me that we were moving, I didn’t want to let go. Personally,

house. Maybe other people didn’t appreciate it the way I did. If people didn’t like my house then they sure didn’t show it. My house was never empty. Maybe that’s because it isn’t just a house. My house was an actress and as a little girl I often had friends over, and my house soon became my castle, my secret lair, and once it even became the school from High School Musical (the movie). The most important role it ever had was as my home. Sure it wasn’t my first house, but it was definitely my first home. It was where our family started. It was a home that would forever hold some of our most precious memories. It was where we laughed together, cried together, celebrated together, mourned together and learned to love each other. We are gathered here today to honour this house that soon became three little children’s home, their safe haven, the place they would run to if anything went wrong. The place where these little kids would grow up. This home has become part of my family. I grew up with it, and alongside my parents, it watched me grow; it watched me go from a pink room to a green room; it watched me go from a Size 1 shoe to a Size 4 shoe; it watched me

have a spot in my heart. Thank you and always remember “A house is made of walls and beams; a home is built with love and dreams.” Thank You. Susan J Sohn susanjsohn@yahoo.ca blogtalkradio.com/susanjsohn

Man to find out if Diefenbaker is his father PROVINCIAL TORONTO - DNA sampling at a Saskatoon museum is going ahead next month as a Toronto man tries to prove former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker was his father. George Dryden says he’s happy a date has now been set for the sampling. Warnex Pro-DNA, based in Thunder Bay, Ont., will carry out the tests Dec. 6 at the Diefenbaker Canada Centre. Results should be known before the end of the year. Dryden, 42, became aware last year of long-

time family whispers that Canada’s 13th prime minister, to whom he bears a strong resemblance, was his real father. In June, he discovered that the man he always believed was his dad was not his biological parent.

involving alleged abuse of the mentally challenged should go to trial as soon as possible, a judge has ruled. In setting a trial date, Ontario Superior Court Justice Patrick Moore expressed concern that many of the 5,000 former residents of the Huronia Regional Centre in Orillia, Ont., are aged or dying. Moore said the trial would now go ahead in September 2013 — the earliest date available for a long trial, and comes despite the government’s opposition to the date setting. The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Kirk Baert, said the decision to expedite the trial is an indication of the significance of the case. *** HARBOUR GRACE, N.L. - Officers with the Canadian Border Services Agency were dockside Monday as a fishing trawler reported to be carrying three stowaways arrived in Newfoundland. Three people could be seen being led by officers down the gangway shortly after the arrival in Harbour Grace of the trawler Newfoundland Lynx. A spokeswoman for the agency said last week that the stowaways would be processed according to Canadian law. She said officers would interview

the stowaways and what happens next would depend on the documentation provided. INTERNATIONAL KAMPALA, Uganda - Ugandan police say they have arrested a man for “abusing the presidency” after he built a pigsty out of old election posters featuring the president’s face. Officer John Kuusa says the 35-year-old taxi dispatcher’s decision to construct his pigsty out of the images of President Yoweri Museveni led to his Friday arrest. Kuusa said Saturday that George Kiberu used the durable posters for the roof, the walls, and as plates for the pigs. Kiberu says he did not know he was breaking the law. His friend Robert Mbalule says the posters were still on the streets after February’s poll, won by longtime leader Museveni. A recent report by an international rights group says government-backed harassment and repression of critics are increasing in the East African nation. *** BERLIN - An American university has returned a precious painting to a German museum more than six decades after it was stolen in the chaotic

aftermath of World War II. The Indiana University Museum of Bloomington on Monday restituted The Flagellation of Christ, by an unknown artist in the late 15th century, to the Jagdschloss Grunewald museum in Berlin. The painting, which originally formed a wing of an altarpiece, was one of more than a dozen paintings that disappeared from the Berlin museum during the summer of 1945, looted by British and Russian soldiers, and was later sold and ended up in Indiana. *** TRIPOLI, Libya - The International Criminal Court’s prosecutor says Libya can put Moammar Gadhafi’s son and one-time heir apparent on trial at home, but The Hague court will help and its judges must be involved. Luis Moreno-Ocampo was in Tripoli on Tuesday for talks with Libya’s new leaders about their plans try Seif al-Islam Gadhafi. The son of the former Libyan leader was captured last Saturday in southern Libya. The ICC has charged him with crimes against humanity. Libya’s new leaders have said they will try Seif al-Islam at home even though they have yet to set up a court system.

Triple-Cheese Mashed Potato Casserole Mashed potatoes are always a popular dinner choice, and when you add three kinds of cheese to the mix, no one can resist a second helping. 5 pounds all-purpose potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks

1 tablespoon salt 2 teaspoons salt 5 tablespoons margarine or butter 3/4 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese 3/4 cup plain dried breadcrumbs 2 cups reduced-fat milk (2 percent) 4 ounces Cheddar cheese, shredded (1 cup) 4 ounces Neufchatel

Best of best go toe to toe Well it all comes down to this. The 2011 CFL season is now a one-game showdown for all the marbles between the B.C. Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers this Sunday at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. It’s the way it should be, really. Both teams finished atop their respective divisions and now, truly, the best team will win. Meanwhile our Roughriders will be watching the 99th Grey Cup from home. Having missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade, the players on Canada’s Team have had a few weeks to decipher what went wrong. And if they know what it is, they’re keeping it to themselves. If misery loves company, then the Riders have a lot of it. The Alouettes, Stampeders and Argonauts

Salisbury Steaks There’s not a man around who doesn’t love the taste of Salisbury steak. There’s something in the sauce that’s more powerful than all the perfume Paris can make! Serve this to your man and see if he doesn’t agree. 16 ounces extra-lean ground sirloin or turkey breast 3/4 cup finely chopped onion

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider all watched this past weekend’s division finals on TV after participating in them one year ago. It should give us all hope for next year and so should Paul LaPolice’s Bombers who one year ago, were a league-worst 4-14. However this blogger cautions not to refer to this 5-13 season of 2011 as a blip on the screen. Not by a long shot. There were mistakes ... plenty of them. There was an arrogance wafting through the locker room that drifted its way onto the field. We were all guilty of it, so this is not to

point fingers. However, it needs to be rectified. Steps have already started to ensure the bounceback begins in 2012. The ugly, and dysfunctional management structure has been cleaned up and everyone will answer to one man: GM Brendan Taman. And he now is in the process of finding a coach and re-signing players. The first to re-sign is defensive tackle Keith Shologan who just completed his fourth season in Green and White. The Rochester, Alberta product dabbled

form into 6 patties. 3. Place patties in a large skillet sprayed with butterflavored cooking spray and brown for about 3 minutes on each side. Place browned patties in prepared baking dish. 4. In a small bowl, combine gravy and undrained pimiento. Evenly spoon gravy mixture over patties. Cover and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. When serving, evenly spoon gravy over patties. Serves 6.

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray an 8-by-12-inch baking dish with butter-flavored cooking spray. 2. In a large bowl, combine meat, onion, cracker crumbs, ketchup, parsley flakes and black pepper. Mix well to combine. Using a 1/3 cup measuring cup as a guide,

with the notion of signing with his hometown Eskimos but realized if you’re a CFL player, Saskatchewan is the place to be. Shologan also noted the move to put Taman in charge is a sign the club is back on track. There is a moratorium on announcements not pertaining to the Grey Cup this week so you won’t hear anything about player signings or a new coach with the Riders. However Taman plans to interview Argos assistant Mike O’Shea and Ti-Cats assistant Corey Chamblin this week for the job. Right now there appears to be no clear-cut favourite. Slowly but surely things are turning around, and for the better. Richie Hall always says, “the sun will come up tomorrow” and I’ve always disliked it as we wallow in the shadows of failure, no matter how brief they are. But lo and behold, it looks like he’s right.

Taylor vs. Tyler? We have a new leader Your Honour: The hockey jury may wish to change its mind. Remember the “Taylor vs. Tyler” hysteria leading up to the 2010 National Hockey League entry draft and the feeling that the poor Boston Bruins were the big losers when Edmonton Oilers, picking first, grabbed Taylor Hall, thus winning the biggest prize in the draft pool? Some win. Some loss for Boston, which wound up with the consolation prize, Tyler Seguin. It felt like winning a plastic replica when first prize was a cherry red Corvette. Poor, poor Boston. Stuck with Seguin. At the time, the hockey world was ostensibly sending letters of sympathy to Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli for losing out on the majestic Hall, a player some were calling a one-in-a-decade star. That was then. This is now. Those people doing cartwheels down Nashua Street in Beantown? Chi-

arelli, Bruins coach Claude Julien and the thousands of Bruins fans who some days feel like the Chicago Bulls did in 1984 when Sam Bowie was picked No. 2 (behind Hakeem Olajuwon) by Portland in the NBA draft and the Bulls, choosing third, were saddled with a North Carolina collegian by the name of Michael Jordan. Perhaps you’ve heard of him. Hall entered the NHL with the blaring of trumpets and superstar predictions. Seguin sat on the Bruins bench a lot, and played third- and fourthline minutes. Hall finished with 22 goals in 65 games before breaking an ankle in March to finish his season. Seguin managed just 11 goals in 74 games. But oh, by the way, Seguin won a Stanley Cup while playing a far more prominent role in the playoffs; Hall’s Oilers missed the post-season. Year two? Seguin has been dazzling. He leads the Bruins in goals and points (11 and 21) in the first 18

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist games. As of Nov. 19, he led all NHL forwards in plus-minus with a plus-17. He is the Bruins’ offensive spark on a squad that will likely contend again for the Cup. “I think we knew he’d be a good player for us this year, but no doubt, he’s probably playing even better than we expected,” Julien told Steve Conroy of Bostonherald.com. And Hall? Still getting plenty of minutes, still a great player, but with only six goals (including a hat trick) in the first one-fifth of Edmonton’s season. Maybe the pressure of trying to live up to being the No. 1 pick is weighing on him. Maybe being No. 2 has motivated Seguin to try just a little bit harder. • Comedy writer Jerry

Perisho: “A Democrat congressman is comparing the NCAA to the Mafia. The big difference is that when young kids are coming up through the Mafia, they’re expected to go to class.” • Hall of Fame QB Joe Namath, to ESPN Radio, after Jets coach Rex Ryan was spotted at a mall wearing a Namath jersey: “I’m just stunned that the jerseys with No. 12 come in that size.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, on the arrest warrant issued for Terrell Owens for missing child-support hearing: “Don’t worry about Terrell; he’s spent his entire career building an insanity defence.” • Cam Hutchinson of the Saskatoon Express: “The Yankees signed CC

Sabathia to a fi ve-year, $122 million deal. That works out to $400,000 per pound.” • Ah, the poor Maple Leafs. The world of humour just won’t leave them alone. Here’s a quick one: “I met a fairy today that granted me one wish. ‘I want to live forever,’ I said. ‘Sorry,’ said the fairy, ‘I’m not allowed to grant wishes like that!’ ‘Fine’ I said, ‘I want to die after the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup!’ ‘Oh, you’re crafty,’ said the fairy.” • Comedian Argus Hamilton, on the Dodgers being put up for sale: “It will take awhile to sort out the best offer. Peter O’Malley’s interested in buying the team, Mark Cuban’s interested in buying the team and Kim Kardashian is interested in marrying the team.” • Greg Cote, Miami Herald: “Kneeling to pray in public has come to be known as ‘Tebowing.’ Meantime the practice’s namesake, Tim Tebow, continues to take way too many sacks for the Bron-

cos. Analysts think Tebow would have more mobility in games if he’d ditch the flowing robe and sandals.” • RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “A new study has shown that prolonged sitting puts you at greater risk for illnesses like diabetes, arthritis and cancer. This can’t be good news for Denver QB Brady Quinn.” • NBC’s Jay Leno: “A man is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at Sunday’s Patriots-Giants game. The guy’s lucky. If his gun had gone off at a Raiders game, 50,000 fans would have returned fire.” • Headline at Fark. com: “City of Orlando still preparing for NBA All-Star Game, halftime entertainment from the Easter Bunny.” • Comedy writer Alan Ray on Matt Kemp’s $160 million contract extension windfall: “The last person Frank McCourt gave that much money also took his house and the Ferrari.” Care to comment? Canadian De Rosario named MVP of MLS NATIONAL TORONTO - Canada can now start planning for the next round of its World Cup qualifying journey: six matches in just over four months starting with a potentially steamy date in Cuba next June. The Canadian men have fallen at this stage in four of the last six qualifying campaigns in CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. There are 12 teams remaining: Canada and the five other pool winners from the second qualifying round have been joined by the region’s six top-ranked teams, as of the March 2011 FIFA ratings. Canada, ranked 83rd in the world, has been drawn in Group C along with No. 53 Panama, No. 57 Honduras, and No. 100 Cuba. *** NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. - Canadian Dwayne De Rosario has been named MVP of Major League Soccer. The D.C United attacking midfielder wins the Volkswagen MVP Award after finishing as a finalist in 2005 and 2006. The 33-year-old from Toronto also won the Golden Boot this season as the

league’s leading scorer with 16 goals and 12 assists. *** DALLAS - The Dallas Stars gave new owner Tom Gaglardi the perfect welcoming gift. Toby Petersen, Steve Ott and Michael Ryder each scored goals and the Stars ended a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night. Kari Lehtonen made 17 saves for the Stars, who had been outscored 21-4 during the five-game skid. Before the game, Gaglardi was introduced to the crowd and dropped the puck for the ceremonial faceoff. The Vancouver businessman’s purchase of the team was approved by the NHL last week. INTERNATIONAL MILWAUKEE - Baseball owners have unanimously approved the sale of the Houston Astros from Drayton McLane to Jim Crane. The Astros will move from the NL Central to the AL West beginning in the 2013 season, giving each league 15 teams. As part of the agreement to switch leagues, the sale price was cut from US$680 million to $615 million, a person at Thursday’s meet-

ing told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details weren’t announced. Major League Baseball will make up part of the $65 million difference, paying McLane $35 million over three years, the person said. Commissioner Bud Selig said owners also approved two additional wildcard teams for the postseason, meaning 10 of the 30 teams make the playoffs. Selig said the specifics are being worked out. The players’ association favours the move. *** ROYAL OAK, Mich. - An exhibition of art by exDetroit Red Wings defenceman Vladimir Konstantinov is going on display. The Detroit News reports that the show titled “Animals and Inspiration” includes 42 of his pieces and took place Thursday at Gallery U in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak. Konstantinov was left with disabling brain injuries following a 1997 limo crash six days after he helped the Red Wings win their first Stanley Cup in 42 years. His rehabilitation has included attending the Universal Institute in Troy, which also operates the gallery. The exhibition illustrates Konstantinov’s expres-

Surviving a winter weather emergency Q: We recently experienced an unexpectedly early and heavy snowfall in the Northeast. As a new transplant from a Southern state, I was totally unprepared for this. My neighbors were a real help as I dug out from nearly a foot of snow and dealt with having no power or heat. I wanted to write you with a few of my observations from the snowstorm. --Make sure you have basic necessities on hand. I had a “hurricane kit” with me that I’d assembled in Alabama years before, which included a combination fl ashlight-radio that charges by winding a crank; extra candles and matches; energy bars; beef jerky; emergency blankets and a couple of gallons of water. --Have appropriate clothing for your region: Since I had just moved to the area, I had not yet bought a heavy winter coat. My next-door neighbor loaned me an extra one. --Purchase an extra battery for your cellphone or laptop, and keep it charged. --Fill your car’s gas tank the day before a storm’s arrival. If you have

a generator, purchase fuel for it as well, and store it in approved containers (and ideally away from the house). --Do not run generators inside the garage! We had a few people taken to the hospital in our region due to carbon monoxide seeping into the house. --Get to know your neighbors before bad weather strikes, and stay in touch with them during or after a storm. Without my neighbors’ help, I would have had a much harder time getting through this event. --And finally, when shoveling snow, lift with your legs, not your back! Don’t overload the shovel, and just push the snow aside, rather than fling it away. My neighbor was happy to give me lessons. (Although, I’m investing in a snow blower as soon as they’re available at the hardware store.) Hope your readers

Bake and share holiday cookies It was somewhere between a Norman Rockwell painting and a Hallmark Moment. Our extended family had just gathered for Christmas last year at our cozy cabin nestled in Northern California’s coastal redwood forest. The kids were busy chopping wood in the misty, foggy air, and my husband was stoking the fire in the sturdy Norwegian stove, while I arranged fresh pine and eucalyptus down

the center of our family’s century-old dining-room table. Then, just as Grandma Dolly cracked the last egg for her traditional Swedish rice pudding, we heard a knock at the front door.

Beaming from ear to ear, our friend from down the road stepped inside to present us with a delectable plate of his mom’s homemade treats. From crunchy peanut brittle to light coconut meringue, the gift assortment was the exclamation point to a perfect afternoon. Mixed with family tradition, culinary talent and enough sugar to satisfy any sweet tooth, cookie and candy recipes reign

at holiday gatherings. Some of our best family memories are built around mounds of cookie dough, colored frosting and candy sprinkles strewn all over the counter and kitchen floor! Here are some fresh ideas and hints for this year’s family memorymaking and baking: --Start with a standard sugar-cookie recipe with your school-age kids. Let them practice their math and reading skills as you show them basic measuring techniques. --Once baked and cooled, make frosting in several colors for decorating cookies. Spoon each color into a separate zipper-style plastic bag. Close and twist like a pastry bag, pushing the frosting to a bottom corner of the bag. Snip the corner

with scissors to allow the frosting to flow. Raisins, nuts, coconut and colored sugars make tempting additions to your cookie art. --Hang decorated sugar cookies on branches of mini Christmas trees for holiday guests to take home. Before baking, make a hole with a drinking straw at the top of each cookie. Squeeze frosting to write on the names of guests. Thread ribbon through the holes, and hang the cookies. --For iPad users, techsavvy families will be inspired to try new recipes using the fun, just released “Martha Stewart Makes Cookies” app created in partnership with Callaway Digital Arts and MSLO. The inspiring “Cookie Runway” is a real hit with kids when they swipe across the screen through

the 50 plus recipes. The innovative roulette-wheel recipe finder lets them pick their favorite type and flavor. I like the practical shopping lists I’ve sent to my iPhone, the nifty timer and the how-to videos. Preview the app at www.marthastewart.com/ cookie-recipes-app. *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Prostate blood test far from perfect DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had my annual PSA test, and it came back 3.5 ng/ml. My doctor said anything below 4 is good. My past scores have never exceeded 0.5. I am concerned with the rate of increase from last year. Need I be? Should I get checked in six months to ease my mind? -- B.B. ANSWER: PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a blood test used for the detection of prostate cancer. It’s far from being a perfect test, but it is the only one we have. Not only is the test imperfect, but experts disagree on how the test numbers should be interpreted. Many insist that a

man’s age should define what the normal range for it is. The younger the man, the lower should be the acceptable PSA. Results from large studies yield conflicting information. One study suggests that a PSA of 2.5 ng/ml ought to prompt additional testing, such as a prostate biopsy. Another large study uses 4 as the cutoff for ordering more

investigation. And a third sets the upper limit of normal at 3.5. PSA velocity is another factor that enters into interpreting the test. If the PSA value increases in one year by 0.75 or more, then the possibility of cancer exists and further testing is suggested -- a biopsy. Your value increased many times that number. I believe you need to have that checked out soon. In fact, if a man has a PSA value of less than 4 on previous tests, and his PSA has increased by 0.35 in one year, that man should be advised to have a biopsy. The booklet on prostate enlargement and prostate cancer digs more deeply into these subjects.

Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My son had surgery for diverticulitis and was discharged from the hospital two days later. He had to return to the hospital because of terrible stomach pain. The doctor did a second surgery and submitted material to the lab. The report came back that he had C. diff. I would appreciate so much any information

on this. -- M.M. ANSWER: C. difficile (diff-uh-SEAL) is a bacterium. It can be acquired anywhere, but most often in the hospital. In the digestive tract, it is a distinct minority. However, antibiotics can kill off the normal bacteria in the tract and the C. difficile bacterium then experiences explosive growth. That can cause minor intestinal problems to major intestinal catastrophes with voluminous diarrhea and fierce pain. All of this is due to toxins (poisons) produced by this germ. Stopping antibiotics is the first line of treatment. If that doesn’t bring relief,

“Oh Deer!”

then the antibiotic metronidazole often cures patients. Should metronidazole fail, the antibiotic vancomycin is a trusted standby. Sometimes attempts to reestablish a normal bacterial population for the colon are successful in ending the problem. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Q: My mom grew up in Soulard, a neighborhood in St. Louis. During the early 1930s, she met Irma S. Rombauer, who, with her daughter Marion, was compiling a new cookbook, “The Joy of Cooking.” It was published in 1931, and my mother was given a signed first edition. I have often wondered about its value and wonder if you can help me. Is this just another cookbook, or do I have something really special? I am a professional cook and often use the cookbook’s later editions, especially the one pub-

lished in 1962. -- Susan, Wheatridge, Colo. A: Take off your apron and sit down, because I have some rather startling news for you. First, let me provide you with a little background about “The Joy of Cooking,” one of the most significant cookbooks in American history. Irma and Marion Rombauer lived in the Compton Heights neighborhood of St. Louis, and even though neither woman had much experience in the kitchen, Irma’s husband committed suicide, which made it necessary for the two women to find a way they could

support themselves. Irma gathered recipes, and her daughter illustrated them. The first edition had a definite German-American flavor, which reflected their neighborhood. The editions that followed made “The Joy of Cooking” a national bestseller, and many consider it one of the better cookbooks ever. And now for the good part. Are you sitting down, Susan? Since so few copies of the first edition exist, your signed copy is probably worth about $5,000, perhaps more at auction. The 1936 edition is valued in the $140 to $250 range, and the 1962 edition (which I also like and use), goes for $30 to $50, depending on condition. Another popular edition is the one issued in 1943 because of its “sugarless” recipes, necessary because of war rationing. *** Q: While cleaning out my mother’s kitchen
