THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2012
Cheers to the owner of Estevan City Cab. I needed money to go to Weyburn to see my daughter and he gave me a free cab ride.
Jeers to parents who complain about activities inside and outside of school but never, ever volunteer to help out.
Cheers to the second annual Eve of Destruction. It was a destructive good time.
Jeers to the prevalence of smoking in our society. I couldn’t even escape the smell of smoke while in my car waiting for a train.
Cheers to the bus drivers who get our children safely to and from school all year. Cheers to the launch of the new housing development at Estevan’s north end. Cheers to the library staff who does such a great job and has lots to offer families.
Jeers to a top professional hockey league in North America and its commissioner for once again not being able to find common ground with its players and locking them out. Jeers to all those people who continue to proceed north or turn left at the stop sign at the corner of Souris Avenue and King Street. If you can’t read the sign, you shouldn’t be driving. Jeers to the bad customer service I received when dealing with a telecomm company in the area. Jeers to smokers who stand in front of shops lighting up. I shouldn’t have to walk my children through your cloud to get groceries.

Campaign asks people to adopt a shelter dog With the summer over, the Pedigree Adoption Drive reminds people there are dogs in the local shelters awaiting new homes. It’s the fifth year for the campaign, and the Estevan Humane Society is one of 30 shelter partners with Pedigree. Marlene Moore, president of the Estevan Humane Society, said one of their goals during this campaign is to show that the dogs in their shelter are good dogs and simply in need of a good home. “The Pedigree Adoption Drive campaign is just to enable Canadians to help by adopting or volunteering or donating to the cause, she added. The campaign launches today, Sept. 19, and donations are made through the sale of each bag of Pedigree dog food. A portion of those sales is donated by Pedigree to the campaign. Moore said the company is very generous with their partners, noting Pedigree has donated more than $1 million in its first five years. Donations of up to $5,000 are made to the shelters, and those funds are used for whatever the shelters deem is necessary. “We have staff that we have to pay. Our medical bills each month can be anywhere from $800 to $1,000, said Moore.

“Maintaining the building is another huge thing. She noted they are now able to move their dressing trailer up next to their shelter. “It would have to be moved out of there since the flood last year, so it will be moved this week hopefully, said Moore. They’ve received some help from the community for gravel and labour, and she said they are grateful for the assistance. The trailer will be used for storage of food and cat litter among other things. The adoption drive is also about encouraging people to adopt one of the dogs residing at the shelter. Moore said it’s important for everybody to know that the dogs at the humane society find themselves there for a number of reasons, but they are all worthy of a home. “They are trying to let everybody know they’re good dogs. The dogs at the shelter are good dogs. Some of them need more love and attention, but I say ‘bad dog, bad owner,’ she added. Moore said they have been kept busy this past summer, seeing more dogs come in than usual. “We’ve had more dogs this summer than we have all summer. Part of the reason is that we have so many transient people coming into town. They get here and they don’t have a place to stay, let alone shelter their animals, and I think they just let them go. Then they end up at the shelter. She said they do still have a couple of kennels vacant, but had two more dogs come in this past week. Moore said for those looking to adopt one of the animals, they can take it home for a week or two and foster it. If things don’t work out for whatever reason, they can bring it back to the shelter. She said that is an option, and the most important thing for the humane society is that the animals get a good home. Moore reminds everyone that the humane society is hosting its dog jog in memory of the late Dr. Neil Howard, who would look after the Estevan animals for free. The dog jog is Sept. 23 at 1 p.m., with registration beginning at the Estevan Shoppers Mall. A barbecue will follow the event.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2012
Changes proposed for Estevan, Cannington The Estevan Constituency is being proposed for a redraw, but there are some arguments that favour maintaining the status quo. Every 10 years, the boundaries for each provincial constituency are reviewed and changes are proposed to keep each one as close to the average allowable population as possible. The current commission has outlined new boundaries for Estevan and was at the Estevan Court House on Sept. 11 to hear from a few delegates about what their ideas were for how the boundaries should be dealt with. There were delegates from the RM of Benson as well as a representative from the Cannington Sask. Party Constituency Association, both of whom were requesting the boundaries remain unchanged. The proposed changes to the Estevan boundary would remove the town of Benson, and all of the RM of Benson from the constituency, placing the entire RM in the Cannington Constituency. Previously the RM of Benson was split,
6

with the town and part of the RM inside the Estevan Constituency. The proposal adds Frobisher to the Estevan Constituency. Stuart Pollon, deputy chair for the constituency board, said one of the considerations they made when redrawing the lines was to use established borderlines where possible by not splitting RMs. “We try to respect municipal boundaries where we can, he said. “We try and do that not just in this area but across the entire province. We haven’t been entirely successful because of the requirement to balance it off the legislative requirement with respect to population size. The primary concern for the commission is keeping each constituency as close to the population quotient number of 13,059 as possible, and no more than five per cent outside that number. Pollon said the main reason for the local boundary change is because Estevan is growing disproportionately from other areas of the province and needs to

be geographically smaller. “This area is growing. The southeast part of Saskatchewan, Estevan and Weyburn for example, the actual physical footprint on the boundaries for what’s proposed in this commission compared to what was in existence from the 2002 commission, they’ve actually gotten smaller because of population growth relative to the rest of the province. RM of Benson administrator Laureen Keating gave a brief address to the commission, requesting that the town of Benson remain in the Estevan Constituency and the RM remain split between Estevan and Cannington. Keating was asked by the commission what her thoughts as an administrator were in dealing with two MLAs instead of one. “We have no issue with that, said Keating. “Right now Highway 47 divides the RM already. The highway was the constituency dividing line for the last 10 years, and RM of Benson residents are used to going to Lampman for voting, she said.
09
08
07
She added that many constituents would have to travel greater distances for voting, which could lead to poorer voter turnout. She said people in the RM are familiar with Estevan and travel to the city often. Pollon said part of the difficulty with the constituencies in the southeast is the fixed borders, with North Dakota to the south and Manitoba to the east. Cannington can only move north or west into other constituencies. Estevan can’t add any land from the south. “It’s not just purely (about) where does the RM go, said Pollon. “It’s called the domino effect. When you alter one area, you have to impact another constituency. It is quite limited when you get into this area of Saskatchewan as far as what changes you can make, because we don’t have the ability to go south and we have no ability to go east. The commission’s final report is scheduled to be completed on Oct. 18, with its outline of all new boundaries for provincial constituencies.

Sometimes things are chosen for us The world of hit music will never be the same. There aren’t any hits anymore. Music, like everything else that is popular, is going viral. A great example of viral music, because of its viral nature more than its artistic merit, is the summery yet monotonous Carly Rae Jepsen song Call Me Maybe. This is a song that not even I could avoid and while I didn’t know the song title or artist until just recently, it is immediately recognizable. The song really is the definition of a virus. It spreads far and wide whether we like it or not, and it is inescapable. You don’t go to the Billboard charts anymore to see how prevalent a song is. Now it’s just another trip to YouTube. Here I can see that one video of the song has attracted more than 260 million hits, while other different videos of the same song have gone viral as well. Other videos range anywhere from one million to more than 90 million views. The other unavoidable hit of the summer, Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know, gathered more than 321 million hits in a little more time. Again, the song and video lent itself to numerous parodies, covers and alterna-
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers tive videos that raked in hundreds of millions of more views. In some ways it’s great that music can be shared so easily and everyone can access the tunes they want. But as with everything, there is someone in the background pulling the strings. Apparently it was the one and only Justin Bieber, of course, who sent out a tweet promoting Call Me Maybe and launching it into a megahit. He is the source of the virus. It just goes to show that it isn’t the media that holds all the sway over public perception; it’s Bieber. And just like The Dude, when Bieber tells us what to do, we simply abide. It does startle me that we’re being bombarded with things that have received the Bieber stamp of approval. He has more power over what we see and hear than Rupert Murdoch. No one person should have that power, but The
Biebs, due not to any fault of his own, has that influence. It’s interesting how people influence our lives. Our family and friends have very direct impacts on us, but then The Biebs comes along, and now, like him or not, he has some sort of control in pretty much everyone’s lives in North America and in many other places around the world. If it’s because of him that the Jepsen song exploded, then he chose the pop song of the summer for us. It’s because of him that we have baseball teams posting videos of themselves performing a choreographed dance to the song. It’s because of him that somebody took the time to splice together Barack Obama quotes to make him say the lyrics to the song. This is still democracy at work as far as I’m concerned. It’s not the cream of the crop that rises to the top; it’s just the easily digestible and inoffensive vanilla flavour that a teen pop star tells us to vote for. That’s democracy at its worst perhaps, but it’s still in action. It’s because of Bieber that I’ve heard this song, and now I dread the moment when he dabbles in my life once again.
Cuts to heritage a blow to Motherwell If recent experience has taught me anything, it’s not to expect much in terms of positive for Western Canada and agriculture to come from the Stephen Harper government. When I heard recently about Harper’s budget cuts that were about to impact the Motherwell Homestead Historic Site at Abernethy, I was not particularly shocked, but I was very disappointed. The Motherwell Homestead will become a self-guided site in 2013 as a result of the impact from a $29.2 million budget cut to Parks Canada. One of the great things about the Motherwell site has been having staff in period costume to help take you beyond the surface of looking at a display to really understanding what you are viewing. It is one thing to see a horse-drawn plow and to read a little plaque about how it was done. It is decidedly more meaningful, and impacting to see a demonstration. That is where the Motherwell Homestead has shone, because it has offered agricultural programming that is meant
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist to depict a prairie homestead, and the homestead is not just the cornerstone of agriculture today, but frankly of the Prairie region as it exists today. The site has had people on-site doing demonstrations with horse-drawn implements showing how the land was broken and worked. Go to the house, a beautiful heritage building filled with artifacts, but more importantly there has been the smell of fresh bread made by staff. It gives you a feeling of truly stepping back into our collective past. For those unfamiliar with the site, it honours an important figure in agriculture. William R. Motherwell was the province’s first agriculture minister, a significant portfolio in the era given the
importance of farming at that time. Motherwell would later become federal minister in the Liberal government of Prime Minister William Lyon MacKenzie King. Homesteaded near Abernethy in 1882, the Motherwell farm site was designated a national historic site in 1966. The man and our homesteading past deserve to be remembered, and that is best achieved by having qualified staff to help you understand what you are seeing. Sadly our history apparently isn’t a particular priority for the federal Conservatives, and the Parks Canada cuts will mean the loss of five staff at Motherwell. And in terms of Saskatchewan, five more staff are being lost at the Grasslands National Park at Val Marie. At a time when we have growing interest in protecting natural ecosystems, these cuts again make little sense. Cuts to heritage programming make no sense when you factor in their importance to local economies, tourism, and the education of a new generation. Too bad Harper and his cabinet couldn’t see that from Ottawa.

Is social media an important tool for candidates in civic elections?
He She He She Said
Social media is the newest weapon for candidates at all levels of government. It’s at everyone’s disposal but how it’s used can mean everything in an election. This is particularly true of civic elections where there are no party affiliations and voters base their decisions entirely on the individual. Voters look at what a candidate stands for and whether or not that candidate is likeable. How well a candidate uses various kinds of social media on the campaign trail can have an incredibly large impact on voters. In a civic election, voters choose the candidate they like, and a great place to make voters swoon is on a social network. Social media offers a unique way for candidates to interact with potential voters. At any time and in any place, a connected candidate can speak directly to the electorate, and that can mean everything as more and more voters become tech savvy. I’m not a campaign strategist, but a candidate who is connected can reach a much wider audience than one who isn’t. As a voter, if I can fire off a question or comment to a candidate and receive a response, that matters to me. It makes a voter feel like this candidate will listen to them. Previously candidates were only available during a public debate or if they were making an appearance somewhere. The availability of a candidate opens up a whole new world of transparency. Messages and responses are public on social media sites. It’s not filtered through the media. Even with accurate coverage of a debate, we still never have the space to regurgitate everything verbatim, so decisions are made based on what an editorial department deems most important. That’s necessary for us, but when a candidate can send out messages personally in response to a voter question, there’s no better way to connect to a voter right now than in that digital space. Social media has quickly become a vital strategy for any candidate who is looking to take a serious run at public office. — Jordan Baker
I think social media is important in everything, so it definitely has the potential to be useful in elections. Candidates can use Facebook to set up a profile and spread the word that they’re running for election. This is a good way to let people know that you’re running. It’s also a great forum for discussion, for posting your platform and for interacting with the voters. Similarly, Twitter is a great way to reach the public. Mayors or city councillors who are proficient in tweeting can keep the public up to date on their activities, on issues that are important and can answer questions directly. It makes public figures into people, rather than figureheads who make speeches and smile nicely for cameras. A lot of the people using social media are young people, who consistently seem to have the lowest turnout in elections. Put your platform and your ideas in a place that young people can find you. I’ve definitely read through platforms and scrolled through profiles of politicians online. If you reach out to me, and to young people like me, I bet you’ll get more votes than if you appear stuffy and old. While there are tons of positives involved in social media and elections, there are also downfalls. Consider, for one, if a candidate is a bit of a moron. Let’s say a candidate sets up a Twitter account and uses it to fight with people who disagree with his/her platform, and to attack other candidates. This hateful candidate might have great ideas and could have the potential to be a great leader, but all his/her good qualities are hidden behind a horrible online persona. This person has lost the race before things have actually even started. Similarly, a candidate who has bad grammar or spelling and makes himself/herself seem stupid online isn’t going to be popular with educated people. As far as I’m concerned, if you can barely spell your own name, then you’re unfit to lead my city. I don’t care if you have every other leadership quality; if you can’t put together a sentence, you’ve lost my vote. So yes, social media is important to civic elections; to all elections, in my opinion. And as more people are turning to the Internet for their news and social interactions, social media is only going to get more important. — Tonaya Marr

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2012
The grown up life is a balancing act Living on my own for the last three years has been highly educational. When I fi rst moved out of my parents’ house, I lived in a residence for eight months. This taught me a variety of important lessons, like how to play nice with other kids, to shower fast in a shared bathroom and to value sleep because you can never be sure when you’re going to get it next. I also learned that not all kids are taught how to do laundry, not everyone understands basic hygiene principles and to check to see if your roommate left her webcam on before you get dressed (or undressed). Transferring to the University of Regina and moving into an apartment
brought on a whole new barrage of information. For example, groceries go bad. That container of sour cream Mom always had and seemed to finish isn’t a realistic expectation if you’re not eating sour cream with every meal. I also learned how dangerous napping can be, and how quickly weight can be gained when vodka is your main food group. Living within a budget is another lesson that really hit hard in my second year, and when March comes around and you’ve had to get a job, you start kicking yourself for not saving more in the summer. In my second year, I also realized that some people stay skinny without putting a real emphasis on
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me nutrition. I think everyone has a friend who can eat Pizza Pops twice a day and manage to lose weight. No one likes that person. If you are that person, I probably don’t like you. In second year, I also learned that my dad will still text me bi-weekly, even though I’m back in the same country and only a two-hour drive away, as opposed to a threehour flight.
12094DS00
Third year brought lessons in time management and an appreciation for planning ahead. Journalism school is its own kind of busy, and my first year in the program taught me to plan ahead with meals, to make big batches of things like soups and stews so I could feed myself for a week if needed. I also learned that yelling at classmates won’t always improve situations, but it always makes me feel
better for a little while. Sometimes it makes me feel better indefinitely. When my internships started, I learned to appreciate being able to call my mom and complain about work/ ask for recipes/chat about life. There are so many great things I’ve learned from conversations with my parents that I can’t really begin to express my gratitude. This year – my final year – I’ve learned a few new things as well. I know how to clean puke out of carpet, which I expect may be useful someday (or sometime soon). I’ve learned to get along with whomever I’m living with, which is a lesson learned from four roommates in four years. I’m still working on learning how to man-
age my time, because I’m trying to balance school, work, more work and a social life while trying to use the gym membership I’m paying for. In summary, I’m feeling pretty grown up today. Yes, I called my mom twice to whine about school and life. Yes, the floors in my apartment could probably use a mopping. And yes, I have Facebook and Twitter open while I’m working on my homework. But I’m getting there. Defi nitely feeling good about that. Tonaya Marr isn’t usually so perky and happy. But it’s a good day. However, you can probably look forward to her usual sarcastic wit next week. Contact Tonaya at tonaya.marr@ gmail.com or send her a tweet @TonayaMarr.

Another household appliance bites the dust While doing my husbandly duties this evening, I looked into the dishwasher and, much to my chagrin, I found yet another victim. Like a wilted flower, or a wheat field crushed by a mid-summer’s hailstorm, there it was, lying there; desolate. One more victim of the unyielding forces of nature - the conversion of steel to iron oxide. One more finger in my dishwasher’s bottom rack had rusted off. It’s come to the point where there are more casualties than survivors. It is now next to impossible to stand up a dish in the back row of the dishwasher. Soon, very soon, this appliance will need to be replaced.
This will hopefully be the last in a long line of replacements in recent years. Nearly every major appliance in our home has kicked the bucket in the last five years. When we moved to Estevan, we brought with us a brand new stove, since our old house in North Battleford had built-in appliances. Both the built-in oven and stovetop had been replaced, as well as the microwave and dishwasher, in the year before we left. Our appliances were dying off so fast, there was a point where I was literally cooking supper in an aluminum takeout tray in the wood stove located downstairs. Very rustic, indeed. The following spring

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile in Estevan, our dryer died. That very same week we were going to Prince Albert for what was then the largest photo shoot of my career, a four-day dance festival. Just as we were walking out the door, I heard a strange noise coming from the 30-year-old fridge we dragged with us across the province. It, too, died and at the worst possible moment. We emptied it, crammed what we could

into the little bar fridge that used to be in my camper van, and took off for P.A. Upon our return it was a case of Sears card, here we come. It took the better part of the year to scrounge up the money for the other half of the washer/dryer set. Finally, we seemed to have some relief in sight. One could only hope. Our then two-year-old son decided to get behind our old 25-inch CRT television and push it off its stand. BOOM! My wife and I raced upstairs to find him giggling as our hearts were leaping out of our chests.
It took almost a year to scrounge up the money to replace that, finally, with a fancy-schmancy 50-inch plasma TV, which I intended to drag around to trade shows to wow people with my photography. Some people buy TVs to see the hockey game. I tested out every TV in the store with a thumb drive full of sample photos for display. We had it for all of two months when I carted it off to Regina and back for a bridal show. It made the trip safely, but a little “whoopsie ended up destroying the brand new TV before it could be put back up on the wall. I never want to hear a crash like that again. In recent months, the aforementioned bar fridge has given up the ghost. At first we thought Spencer had simply turned the temperature control off again. No such luck. It would need to be carted out to the dump. But heaven forbid it
should make that trip alone. Oh no. One can’t have one dead or dying appliance at a time. My microwave of 19 years, the graduation gift from my parents, decided servicing me without fail for more than half of my existence on this planet Earth was enough for it. I think we saw a little smoke from it, and it got unplugged and its cord cut. Once again the Sears card got pulled out. If there was ever such a thing as an appliance funeral dirge, I would be able to whistle it by heart. In recalling all these appliance travails, I am reminded of a little truth. When you pay off your car, you think to yourself, “Finally! No more payments.â€? That’s when the maintenance bills start rolling in. Canadian flag back in Quebec’s Red Room National OTTAWA - A Federal Court bid to stop auditor general Michael Ferguson from releasing correspondence between his office and a House of Commons committee died a quiet death Monday. MPs voted to waive the parliamentary privilege of protection over the records in what’s being described as a one-time gesture. A court application was filed by federal lawyers in early September after attempts to persuade Ferguson to reject the information request failed. The NDP were seeking access to his correspondence with the public accounts committee, where he testified about his explosive report into the handling of the planned purchase of F-35 stealth fighters. Commons Speaker Andrew Sheer says the action taken by officials was in keeping with long-standing practice and they’d only asked the auditor’s office to wait until September before deciding whether to comply with the information request. *** AYR, Ont. - Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says if there is evidence or-
ganized crime has a firm grip on the province’s economy, he wants to hear about it, and not through the media. Former RCMP chief superintendent Ben Soave told a Quebec television network that organized crime has infiltrated Ontario’s economy at least as much as it has in Quebec, if not more. But McGuinty says if anyone has such allegations, they should make them through proper channels. The premier says he doesn’t think senior police officers in Ontario would withhold such information from the government or try to keep it confidential. McGuinty says if there is any truth to the allegations, he wants to know about it. Soave said Ontario has the same organized crime groups involved in corruption, and they are probably even more active than in Quebec. Another Mafia expert, Antonio Nicasso, who lived in Toronto for 15 years, said Ontarians tend to minimize the problem “as long as there is no bloodshed in the streets.” *** QUEBEC - The Canadian flag didn’t spend long in the closet. its return to the ornate Red Room of the Quebec legislature today, less than 24 hours after it was pulled out as members of the proindependence Parti Quebecois took the oath of office. The red and white flag is back for the swearing-in of Quebec’s other main parties: Francois Legault’s Coalition and, later in the day, the Opposition Liberals. Whether it remains there, in the long run, is another issue. The flag has been a political yo-yo over the years, bouncing in and out of the chamber depending on the party in power. It has never been present the previous times that the PQ has governed — although, this time, the party has only a minority. International CAIRO - Egypt’s general prosecutor issued arrest warrants Tuesday for seven Egyptian Coptic Christians and a Florida-based American pastor and referred them to trial on charges linked
to an anti-Islam film that has sparked riots across the Muslim world. The case is largely symbolic since the seven men and one woman are believed to be outside of Egypt and unlikely to travel to the country to face the charges. Instead, the prosecutor’s decision to take legal appears aimed at absorbing at least some of the public anger over the amateur film, which portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, womanizer and buffoon. But some Christians and human rights groups expressed concern that trying people on charges of insulting religion, which also occurred to a degree under the secular-leaning regime of Hosni Mubarak, could only increase now that various strains of Islamists are gaining power. The arrest warrants were issued the same day that a Coptic teacher in southern Egypt received a prison sentence for Facebook postings deemed anti-Islamic, charges that
predated the amateur film. *** STOCKHOLM - Two Swedish women are hoping to get pregnant after undergoing what doctors are calling the world’s first mother-to-daughter uterus transplants. Specialists at the University of Goteborg said they performed the surgery over the weekend without complications but added that they won’t consider it successful unless the women give birth to healthy children. “That’s the best proof,” said Michael Olausson, one of the surgeons. One of the unidentified women had her uterus removed many years ago because of cervical cancer, while the other was born without a womb. Both are in their 30s. They will undergo a year of observation before doctors attempt to help them get pregnant via in vitro fertilization, in which embryos created with eggs
from their own ovaries will be implanted in their wombs. *** BERLIN - The German government agency overseeing IT-safety is warning of a security breach in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and recommending people use other browsers until the problem is fixed. The Federal Office for Information Security said in a statement late Monday the browser’s “weak point is already being used for targeted attacks.” It warns the code to attack computers running on Windows XP or Windows 7 operating systems through the browser is freely available online and might therefore spread rapidly. The agency says users of Internet Explorer versions 7, 8 or 9 should switch to alternative browsers until Microsoft updates its browser’s security features. Microsoft Corp.’s German division was not immediately reachable for comment Tuesday morning.
It’s a new Roughrider team at every game You can say it was a step back. It was a small one, but definitely not a move in the right direction. The Saskatchewan Roughriders were denied a third-straight win Sunday in Montreal, falling 28-17 to the first-place Alouettes. In the process, the Riders dropped to 5-6 and remain technically in third-place in the CFL West. Did you watch it? The Alouettes jumped out to a 14-3 lead after one quarter and their lead swelled to 22-6 by halftime. However the Riders completely neutralized Montreal’s offence in the second half, limiting quarterback Anthony Calvillo to 30 yards passing over the final 30 minutes. Unfortunately once the defence got going, the offence stalled. Quarterback Drew Willy, making his first pro start in place of the injured Darian Durant, was unable to replicate
Rod Pedersen Rider Insider his heroics from the week before in the comeback win at the Banjo Bowl. Two second half interceptions plus two missed field goals by Sandro DeAngelis snuffed out any chance of a road victory. It’s too bad. The game was there to be won but the club lost the turnover battle 4-2 and took almost 200 yards in penalties. Many of them were of the needless variety, and sustained Montreal drives. “ T h a t ’s f o o t b a l l , ” shrugged Rider coach Corey Chamblin. “There was an opportunity for us to take this game, but we
didn’t take it. Cinderella didn’t show up twice. We need to look at ourselves with the penalties and the turnovers.” Riders’ leading receiver Weston Dressler was a lot more cutting in his post game comments, saying “It’s time for this thing to grow up.” On a daily basis, Dressler is growing more and more as a leader, saying the things which need to be said, but that comment was particularly poignant. Just who ARE these Roughriders? They’ve definitely been a Jeckyll and
Hyde bunch, starting the season at 3-0, losing five in a row and then rebounding with a back to-back sweep of rival Winnipeg. And now this. It’s head-scratching to examine Sunday’s game. It was right there for them, but as defensive lineman Terrius George said, “We just didn’t want to take it.” Oh well. If there was a game that the Riders could afford to lose, it was this one, rather than the upcoming home games against division foes Calgary and B.C. They’re learning ... sometimes at a painfully slow pace, but they’re definitely learning. All that matters is that they secure a playoff spot and then, as we all know, anything can happen! (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on CKRM radio)

Writers Workshop
Eager writers in Estevan joined visiting author Ed Willett for one-on-one critiques of their writing during the morning last Saturday. In the afternoon, Willett provided a public reading of his work, which includes several science fiction and fantasy novels. Both events were held in the Estevan Public Library. Shauna Stock, Maggie May Holmes and Laura Stock
Tie-Dye Crafts
A group of eager six to 11-year-old crafts kids gathered in the Estevan Public Library on Sept. 15 to participate in the tie-dying workshop that saw them using Sharpie pens with coloured ink to create their colourful T-shirts.

Eskimos come to terms with O’Donnell National EDMONTON - The Edmonton Eskimos shored up their offensive line Monday, agreeing to terms with Canadian-born lineman Matthew O’Donnell. Edmonton acquired the six-foot-nine, 340-pound O’Donnell on Sept. 5 from the Saskatchewan Roughriders for receiver Greg Carr. Saskatchewan selected O’Donnell, who played collegiately at Queen’s, in the second round, 15th overall, of the 2011 CFL draft. However, the native of Comox, B.C., signed with NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals and spent the season on the practice roster before being released prior to the start of
the 2012 campaign. *** MONTREAL - One week after a heart attack, professional wrestling star Jerry “The King Lawler has been released from a Montreal hospital. A brief statement from World Wrestling Entertainment says the 62-year-old Lawler will be heading home in the next several days. He collapsed at the announcer’s table at a WWE event at Montreal’s Bell Centre last Monday night, after suffering a mild heart attack. Lawler, who works mainly as a commentator these days, was also involved in a match earlier in the night.
The statement by publicity director Kevin Hennessy says the organization looks forward to his return to WWE in the future. Last week, the WWE said it was hopeful that Lawler would make a full recovery. *** MONTREAL - Montreal Alouettes running back Brandon Whitaker is out for the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The Alouettes say the 27-year-old will require surgery after suffering the injury in Montreal’s 28-17 home win over Saskatchewan on Sunday. Whitaker is fourth in

the CFL in rushing through 12 weeks of the season, putting up 631 yards and four touchdowns. He also has 516 receiving yards with five touchdowns. The native of Edmond, Okla., led the league in rushing last season with 1,381 yards, scoring four touchdowns. He added 638 yards and six touchdowns through the air. The injury comes just before the Alouettes’ big home game Saturday afternoon against Toronto. Montreal leads the second-place Argonauts by one game in the CFL East Division standings. International ATLANTA - Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner was jailed on charges of drunken driving and speeding early Tuesday, just hours after he scored a touchdown in the team’s win over the Denver Broncos. Turner, 30, of Suwanee, Ga., was booked into the Gwinnett County jail in metro Atlanta just after 5 a.m. Turner spent barely two hours behind bars before he was released on $2,179 bond, jail records showed. A Gwinnett County police officer pulled over Turner’s black Audi R8 on
Interstate 85 northeast of Atlanta after clocking the car at 97 mph — 32 mph over the speed limit, said Cpl. Edwin Ritter, a police spokesman. “The officer made contact with the driver who identified himself as 30-year-old Michael Turner of the Atlanta Falcons, Ritter said in a news release. “The officer could smell an odour of alcoholic beverage coming from the driver and proceeded to conduct a DUI investigation. *** GENEVA - New York Islanders captain Mark Streit and Montreal Canadiens defenceman Yannick Weber are returning home to play in Switzerland during the NHL lockout. Bern says it has signed Streit and Geneva-Servette says it recruited Weber. Geneva-Servette coach Chris McSorley says the club expects to announce another signing on Wednesday. San Jose Sharks captain Joe Thornton is also expected in Switzerland this week after saying he would rejoin Davos. Thornton played with the Alpine town team during the 2004-05 NHL lockout season, alongside New York Rangers winger Rick Nash.
Nash is also being pursued by Davos. The NHL formally locked out its players on Sunday after the collective bargaining agreement expired. *** WA S H I N G TO N President Barack Obama has welcomed the reigning WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx to the White House. It’s been nearly a year since the Lynx won the championship, but the team’s visit was delayed by the Summer Olympics and Obama’s busy schedule. Obama told team members they are great ambassadors for the game and strong role models for his own daughters. The president says the Lynx have returned glory to the Twin Cities. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve thanked Obama for his support of the WNBA and told him the selflessness of her players along with leadership are behind their success. The Lynx won the championship after sweeping the Atlanta Dream in three games last October. The team is in first place in the league’s Western Conference this season.

Take advantage of NHL lockout On a par with Tim Hortons running out of coffee or Internet access going down, Canadians are almost certainly going to face one of those “Oh, no! situations when the National Hockey League goes dark. So, while the lockout is on and NHL rinks are gathering dust, what are loonie-spending, Maple Leaf-waving, coffee-drinking, Justin-Bieber-loving Canadians supposed to do
with time formerly spent in front of their TV sets or - if they’re lucky enough to live in an NHL city - in the stands cheering on their favourite team? Here are a few ways to fill in that time and feel good about yourself at the same time: - Go for a nightly walk, but not to the neighbourhood bar. - Be the “Good Samaritan on your block and shov-

SOUTHEAST AGRI NEWS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2012
Mack steps up to assume bigger role in the Simmental world By Norm Park for Agri-news He finally succumbed to the pressure and allowed his name to stand for the board of directors of the Canadian Simmental Association. Wes Mack is now fully engaged in the front line business of promoting this popular breed of cattle both across the nation and internationally. The nomination came from the Saskatchewan branch, and Mack is the second provincial representative on the board that includes Kelly Ashworth of Oungre as the other provincial voice at the table. The president is Ron Nolan of Markdale, Ont. It’s a three-year term and Mack said he finally found himself in a position where he might be able to devote time to the job that includes a two full board meetings annually with the next conference to be staged in Calgary in October. The spring meeting is generally held in March. Those general working sessions are always held in Calgary while the annual general meeting shifts around the country with the most recent one being in Nova Scotia. Mack said he’s been involved in the Simmental business since 1970 with the family being able to boast of having one of the oldest established herds in Canada. “Dad had Herefords, but when he saw these new breeds coming into play, he
used some foresight and the effort brought phenomenal results with just one cross. He brought in the first imported full-blood female from Switzerland in 1971 and then two more from France in 1972 and ‘73, Mack said. The process wasn’t easy since there wasn’t a lot of protocol established for the Canadian importers at that stage of the game. “The application wasn’t easy and there were only so many permits granted each year. But we persevered and it’s been Simmental ever since, Mack said. When the family took note of how the calves were larger yet there was an ease to the calving procedure, it was one big feature that sold them on the breed. Mack is one of a few mixed farmers still engaged in the business. He and his brother Brian and their families seed 2,000 acres to traditional producer crops and set aside about 1,500 acres for pasture and hay land to accommodate the 150 cows in the operation. On the grain farming side, the Mack clan put in some spring wheat, canola, mustard, oats and flax this year and they’re even putting hay packages together to ship to Eastern Canada and the American south to assist those producers in the severely drought-stricken regions. Mack noted that the CSA also works in tandem with their American counter-
Wes Mack, taking a leadership role with the Canadian Simmental Association. parts, making cross-border business more efficient in the long haul. “We have a big bull sale every spring in Whitewood and right now everyone who is in the cattle business is glad they are. That’s not always the case, he said with a laugh. “It’s a good time to be in cattle. Commercial calves are moving well, good prices all around and a strong market is predicted going into fall and for the rest of the year so it’s our job as particular breed promoters to keep the market in the forefront of all our businesses. The BSE or mad cow disease nightmare that hit everyone in the cattle industry about 10 years ago is still very fresh in the minds of most Canadian ranchers
since the cutback in sales and shipping to international partners “hammered us all, Mack said. “That definitely sorted a lot of cattle guys right out of the business. The CSA, which took root in 1969 just as the first Simmentals were arriving, continues to strive to improve beef production through encouragement, development and regulations that circle around this particular breed. As a result, Mack
said the breed has grown in popularity, something that didn’t always happen with the other “exotics that were brought into Canada during those hey-days of full-bred importations. The CSA also boasts of a very successful junior program through the Young Canadian Simmental Association. The CSA also engages in a geonomics program that studies cattle DNA in partnership with the federal government. This leads to sires that produce the best carcasses and with the bottom line being the most important part of the business, Mack said such things as feed conversion lead to sire groupings that are more marketable. “Some bloodlines get better weight gain on a pound of feed and produce better meat quality so it’s longevity issues we look at, Mack said. Naturally Simmental producers aren’t the only ones working on these lines of experimentation and assessments. It’s just like any other industry, all makes and models are being continually tested and re-designed for
improvements and fixing problems. “It’s one way to stay ahead ... fix the problems before they become major, Mack added. There are programs in place to track stock from the corrals to the dinner plate. Mack, who served as a president of the Saskatchewan Simmental Association for one term and was on the board of directors for four years, says he’d love to see the breed he promotes become the most popular one in the world. The Mack brothers’ farming/ranching operation is located about eight miles north of Estevan on land tracts known as Prairie Wind Farms and they’re proud of their father James who showed that foresight back in the early 1970s to set them on this particular path. He’s was an active participant until just recently as health issues have slowed him up. “Dad was a founding member of the Canadian Simmental Association so I guess it’s time for me to step up and made a contribution in this way too, he said in conclusion.

Last of the crops coming off in southeast By Norm Park for Agri-news The wind certainly didn’t help canola producers this year. Gusts of up to 80 km/h or more just as farmers were attempting to move canola swaths into bins led to some significant losses, said Shannon Friesen, crop specialist for the Ministry of Agriculture. Friesen spoke with Agri-news from Moose Jaw where she was assisting with the mid-September provincial crop report. “Most of the canola is off in southeast Saskatchewan, but what was still around when the winds came last week (Sept. 7-9) was getting blown around right out of the swath, she said. There was also some flax lost, but not as much as the losses to the light weight canola. Overall, about 80 per cent of all crops were off the
land in the southeast sector by Sept. 15 with spring red wheat coming off in record or near record yields which in this part of the province, means 35 to 40 bushels per acre or even better. “I’ve heard of some that came close to 70 per acre in some areas, said Friesen. “Canola results have been disappointing for various reasons. The dryness hit those crops hard in mid-summer, then they got attacked with some diseases, then this wind. They didn’t look all that bad while they were standing, but once the farmers started to bring them in, there wasn’t as much there as they hoped, Friesen added. As in the past southeast Saskatchewan producers were willing to try pretty well anything for crops this year, including a few more acres put into soybeans. “They’re proving that
this is a crop that can be grown very successfully right here in this corner, so they’re doing it, she said. Top soil conditions have undergone a complete turnaround since early and mid-July, going from surplus and good to merely fair or quite dry due to lack of moisture through August and into September. “I would say dugouts and sloughs are still adequate because of the surplus we had, but they are now going dry. I know southwest Saskatchewan is extremely dry. They’re pretty well finished with their harvest. The central and northeast region was only 30 to 35 per cent done by Sept. 11, Friesen said. A final last word of advice from the crop specialist? “For those taking the last of the crops off, remember it’s safety first. You’re tired, so take it easy and also aerate in the bin, she said.
Community pasture transition The provincial government announced recently they will be consulting further with federal pasture patrons on the transition of federal community pastures to patroncontrolled ownership and operation. “We have said all along the patrons of these pastures are the priority for our government throughout this transition, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. “Our goal is to ensure patrons are able to continue using these lands and we want to give them every opportunity to have input about the transition of their pastures. While consultations continue, the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are attempting to ensure pasture users will be able to utilize them for grazing in 2013. Both governments are negotiating a memorandum of understanding that will see federal staff continue to manage these pastures for the 2013 grazing season. Following the federal government’s decision to discontinue the Community Pasture Program, Saskatchewan established an advisory committee made up ofindustry leaders and cattle producers. The committee recommended the following principles for the framework for the transition: 1 – Pasture patron groups will have the opportunity to own and operate each pasture. 2 – Each pasture will be maintained as a complete block. 3 – Sales will be based on market value. 4 – Any sale of native prairie land will be subject to no-break and no-drain conservation easements.
Representatives from each federal community pasture patron group were invited to participate in a conference call in July and each patron advisory committee chairman has been sent an information package on the transition process. “We have had numerous
inquiries by patron groups who are interested in owning and operating these pastures, Stewart said. “I encourage all pasture patron groups to look into forming legal entities or grazing co-operatives in order to transition these pastures into their hands. Discussions are ongoing
6HQFKXNÂŻV 6XSHU 'HDOV
with the federal government and Farm Credit Canada on options that are avalable for financing plans for patron groups to purchase these pastures.

SOUTHEAST AGRI NEWS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2012
Producers making hay in the southeast By Norm Park for Agri-news Producers in southeast Saskatchewan are making hay, making hay. But some are also willing to share the abundance with cattle producers in Eastern Canada who have suffered from severe drought and have been unable to cut much hay to keep their herds fed and sustainable. Noting that exactly 10 years ago Western Canada underwent a big drought and Eastern producers arranged for trainloads of hay to be shipped in this direction to ease the situation, Western producers are now trying to reciprocate with surplus hay that they can send to Ontario and Quebec in what is being dubbed the Hay East Project. The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) made the announcement of the program during the federalprovincial-territorial agriculture ministers’ meeting in Whitehorse, Yukon two weeks ago. In turn, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture is calling on the federal government to provide AgriRecovery funds to assist with the transportation costs. It was also hoped that other partners such as corporations and railways would come aboard to ease the tense situation in Eastern Canada. Norm Hall, president of the APAS, said Eastern producers sent thousands of bales west to help Alberta and Saskatchewan cattle producers survive drought in 2002. “It’s 10 years later and time has come for us to give back to the people who helped us.” Lynn Jacobson, president of the Wild Rose Agriculture Producers, said online forums were filling with farmers checking in to report that their second cuts or stored hay could be moved East, and some were even willing to provide some cash because they were simply proud to be able to help and return the favour. The website to check is www.hayeast2012.com Producers of hay in southeast Saskatchewan are therefore faced with a moral and business decision all at the same time. Lorne Klein, forage specialist for the Ministry of Agriculture, said from his Weyburn office that southern states in the United States have also been hit hard by drought and their cattle producers are having to thin out the herds and do what is necessary to survive. “Texas and Oklahoma are just a couple. There are many other states that are so dry, they’re looking for bales and those large square bales
we can truck so easily now are going for $90 to $100 per ton from the yard and I’ve even heard of $150 per ton for premium second cuts,” Klein said. “So the advantage goes to the southeast on this one because there are lots of trucks coming north related to the oilpatch business and they’re returning with loads of hay and we’ve had significantly good hay crops around here,” he added. “Nobody is in a better position in this case than your guys around Estevan.” But there is also the understanding that producers might feel an obligation to donate bales to the Hay East cause too, and that’s where the moral dilemma comes into play. “This spring we had a significant showings of the alfalfa weevil over the
wide range of southeast Saskatchewan; some fields were devastated in fact,” said Klein. And there has been no real pattern that would help forage specialists make accurate predictions. “We have been monitoring the weevil for years. They were around in 2009 at a moderate level and in 2010 they pretty well disappeared then were moderate again in 2011, so this one is difficult to explain and they really did catch us off guard this year. It may have been the mild winter we had because when they showed up again in such large numbers, they were also two to three weeks earlier than we would normally expect.” Klein said recent recovering prices for commercial cattle and relatively good conditions have helped some of the older producers exit
the ranching business gracefully ... especially those who had been looking for the past few years for a good time to get out of the business anyway. “Calf prices are better
Curious
this year and last year they were good, so those wanting to get out of cattle were doing it this year,” said Klein. These facts might create a minor glitch in herd numbers for awhile, but as
the tradition of the cattle business continues unabated with younger producers coming into the game to carry on, the transitions should be efficient enough not to cause major ripples.
This young steer showed signs of real curiosity as it peeked out of the stall during the summer 4-H competitions at the Estevan Exhibition grounds.
