2013 Year In Review July
The Estevan Bible Camp is looking to rejuvenate itself as it looks forward to a brighter and fuller future. The Bible camp’s vicechairman Justin Nixon is a former camp leader and spoke to the Southeast Trader Express last week about the future of the camp and its new home in Woodlawn Regional Park. The camp location was devastated by 2011 flooding, though many of the cabins escaped relatively unscathed. The camps were converted from weeklong ones to day camps in 2011 and 2012, and were held at Living Hope Community Church. The flooding forced the board to look at other potential locations for the camp. Eventually, Woodlawn Regional Park approached them about setting up in the location they could share with the Scouts, just

to go forward regardless, because we need to start somewhere. We need to rebuild.” The long-term plan for the camp is to turn it into a two-month long, all summer experience. The board is looking ahead three to five years and are hoping to be able to put that in place, but having a building of their own will allow them to do it, free of their three-week time limit with Rotary Hall. “That’s what we’re going for. That’s what we’re striving for, because we really feel that this area could really use it. It may take a little longer, but we’re excited to work toward that,” said Nixon.

The Souris Valley Trekkers hosted their annual trail ride and wagon trek around the paths surrounding Roche Percee. Along with the Roche Percee Recreation Board, the three-day event over the weekend saw about 100 trail riders mount their horses and wagons to enjoy the scenic countryside throughout the valley. Riders gathered at the centre of the village early on Friday and began the first ride at 1 p.m. The afternoon ride allowed everyone to ease into the weekend with a daylong ride following on Saturday. Sunday included another lengthy ride, departing at 10:30 a.m. and running until 4, with a supper that
followed. About 80 riders showed up for the Friday ride and a few more arrived for the remainder of the weekend, which included camping and lots of food. Trail leader Richard Asbenlieder toured the trails ahead of the weekend to determine the best routes to use. The wet conditions the past few weeks had left the trails a little soggy so it made it difficult for some of the wagons to traverse the trails. “(Friday’s) going to be a little damp. Saturday will be good and Sunday, it’s fair on Sunday,” said Asbenlieder. “You try to go around the real bad spots. We lost half our parking spot here on account of the floods. This is the first year we’ve really had a problem. It’s just too wet.” The event is a fundraiser, and the organizations are hoping to put some funds toward a new community hall, which was demolished following flooding in 2011. The healthy turnout of riders allows Asbenlieder to be a little optimistic about the future. “It’s good for a Friday,” Asbenlieder said about the turnout on the first day of the weekend. *** They call themselves the most audacious fitness community in Canada, and they’re looking to foster a Culture of Funk in the Energy City. ⇢ Page 3

northeast of Met Stadium and right next to the river. “We were in discussion with them to develop this land that happened to be used by the Scouts and will be used by them. It was a great opportunity to give us a lot of flexibility because the time constraints in Rotary Park, the size of the building and the size of the kitchen really hampered what we wanted to do,” said Nixon, saying that with them no longer going to use Rotary Hall, it gives the park a few extra weeks each summer where they can rent it out. “Moving into this facility will give us the flexibility we need. As a camp we need a few more amenities for health reasons.” They need showers on site, more bathroom stalls and a more “commercialstyle” kitchen, he added. “Once we get back up to our full numbers, you need a full-sized kitchen to properly prepare food, so it made sense because we needed a bigger facility and Rotary Hall just isn’t designed to facilitate that for us.” Numbers for the camps are down, with a lot of the blamed place on the flooding, which caused the camps to be pretty quiet for the past two years. The squirt camp is higher than the others, as per usual, but the numbers for the junior and team camps are very low. Still, the camps will go ahead this year. “We made the decision as a board that we’re going

2013 Year In Review ⇠ Page 2 It’s called Funkology — not a scientific term — and it’s the basis for a robust workout that encourages fun, friendship and pushing yourself to do better. Founded by Levi Clampitt with Cara Lee getting in on the ground floor, the workouts sprung up from humble origins in December 2012. It all started with the Funk Walk. Unable to enjoy the outdoors in the middle of a Prairie winter, the group took to the Estevan Leisure Centre, donned weighted jackets and walked around the track in Spectra Place. A couple more people joined in, more activities were added to the workout and when May rolled around and the group was able to exercise outside, Funkology really took off. Clampitt said there are now about 60 people who will attend the weekly sessions on a regular basis, with about 20 showing up for each one. On July 31, I threw on gym shorts and running shoes to see exactly what this Culture of Funk was all about. Clampitt summed things up pretty quickly with an offhand remark to the participants following the warm-up. “Who knew working out could be fun?” he said. Clampitt and Lee are resident Funkologists, setting up and running different exercises with fellow organizers Blair Tinant, Rico Tomsha and Anastasiya Shved. Together they create a safe and friendly atmosphere that truly does make working out fun. It has to be fun and non-intimidating because that’s what keeps everyone coming back. “We put the fun in funky,” Clampitt said. “It’s that fun that you get from overcoming obstacles. You feel empowered. Over on my station, there’s a lot of people who are hating in the moment, it’s not fun for them. But afterwards, they pat themselves on their back.”

Travellers to North Dakota will have certainly noticed the physical changes to the United States port of
entry at North Portal. The port recently received a grand promotion in stature, turning it into the fortress-like compound that now creates quite the shadow for the Canadian port to relax in. With the construction of the new building coming in at 33,000 square feet, the port of entry is now 10 times larger than it used to be. What exactly is filling this building is what was on display when the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provided an inside look at the facility and its four buildings on Sept. 5. What most cross-border commuters will notice is the addition of primary inspection booths. Three will be accessible at all times, and there are an additional two lanes for passenger-vehicle traffic. the building, so portions are strategically closed off at various times of the day so employees can focus on necessary areas. The new facility includes a defensive tactics and training area and a gun range. Every three months, all CBP personnel are trained in intermediate force and take part in shooting exercises. Beeter said having a gun range on site is a real luxury after years of having to find a field or gravel pit in the middle of winter to practice. Brian King, CBP public affairs liaison, said the officers at the primary booths know who is approaching them before they stop because of technology in passports and other documents that signal their system before the vehicle comes to a stop. “As the vehicle is travelling up to our officer, he or

Attending the event were a number of individuals and organizations involved in the project, with representation from the City of Estevan, surrounding rural municipalities and the Sun Country Regional Health Authority. Marlin LeBlanc, whose life was saved thanks to the expediency of STARS, acted as an honourary guest by cutting the ribbon. Greg Hoffort, executive director of St. Joseph’s, said no matter the weather or time of year there will be a landing pad that is clear and has direct access to the emergency ward. “It’s that much quicker and efficient and with less risks, so that we can get a patient from our hospital to Regina General,” said Hoffort, who noted the journey will be just 45 minutes by air, where it was two hours

Opening up to what 2014 has in store Turning the calendar into a new year always presents endless possibilities. As we look back at the year that was, reviewing and internalizing all the changes in the world, it’s easy to wonder what’s next? What does the new year have for all of us? How will our lives become easier and what unforeseen challenges are going to make them more complicated? As the planet begins another trek around the sun, people everywhere are making resolutions in an effort to shape and create the world around them rather than have it molded by others. A new year inspires an imagination’s worth of possibilities, and it’s natural for all of us to desire to seize the opportunities we know about while also being prepared to latch on to spontaneous adventures as they present themselves. That’s what we really need to be prepared for in 2014, then again in 2015, 2016 and ever forward. We can make predictable and boring resolutions for self-improvement. We can resolve to be more charitable and volunteer our precious time for people and causes that really need it. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s hardcoded in our systems to want to
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers set goals and create some order and routine in our lives. But looking back at 2013, think about all the things we didn’t plan that happened anyway. There are new opportunities almost every day that we didn’t plan. The year ahead is full of the unpredictable. I’ve written previously about saying yes to the new things that come up in our lives, and I think it’s still an incredibly rewarding idea. It’s also a little bit necessary because the days, months and years ahead are so unpredictable. There is lots to look forward to in 2014. Maybe you’re boycotting the Olympics because it looks like it’s one enormous mess, but many others can’t wait to see people bobsledding. If you love remakes of movies from the 1980s, there’s a new RoboCop, a Godzilla reboot and 22 Jump Street. I’m more looking forward to The Grand
Budapest Hotel, myself. In the music world, there are upcoming albums from Coldplay, Foo Fighters and Adele. I’m still holding out for a release from Tool. There are plenty of other novels, comic books and video games being released in the upcoming calendar year and there is something for everyone to consume and enjoy. But that’s all stuff that we know is going to be available to us in 2014. I’m much more interested in what we don’t know is coming and whatever it is, I want to be open to the experience. I want to be ready for new things or prepared to help someone who is asking for assistance. I’m making no predictions for 2014. I’m not much for prognostications. I just know great things are going to happen, and weird things are going to happen. The coming year is going to present things that nobody can predict, and that’s great, because in a connected world where all of humanity’s collective knowledge rests in our pockets — or on our dinner tables — there is still a little bit of wonder in the world. There is still wonder in 2014, and I’m excited to see what it has to offer.
Farm world will continue to be unpredictable With a new year upon us, it’s natural for most of us to look ahead to what might occur in our given world. Predicting anything for farmers is perhaps as difficult as prognostications can get. There are too many factors that are beyond control, and any prediction can only be based on some broad guesses. For evidence of just how difficult predicting the farm situation is, we need only look at the year just past. In early May, there was a very real possibility that the 2013 crop might not get in the ground at all. It appeared like winter was going to simply hang on through spring and leave no window to get a crop in the ground. As winter began to linger, we grew to fear the prospect of a quick thaw, which would hold the prospect of widespread flooding. We were generally prepared for a bad year. And then the snow left, and the weather held, and farmers hit the fields. There remained a fear some crops went in rather late, setting up fears of what an early frost might do, but the crop still went in. Through the summer we never seemed to get overly hot weather, nor did we see cold summer days either. The temperatures were basically nice, day after day after day. Rains were not excessive, but those that came always seemed timely in terms of crop growth. And the crops, late planted or not,
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist responded to what ultimately turned out to be near ideal growing conditions. When the combines started to roll they found the bounty of what would become a bumper crop. Quality was good, the bushels record-setting. In May, a crop we would have predicted might not even be planted would end up producing more bushels than any previous crop on record. Weather is always a determining factor in agriculture. Not only does it determine exactly how many bushels and what quality will be harvested here, but also on a world, scale weather very much impacts prices. A glut of grain in a major exporting country puts downward pressure on markets. Crop failures from drought, frost and other weather conditions, if across a large enough producing area, can signal for prices to rise. So what does that all mean for 2014? Simply put, the only one who probably knows what farmers might expect is Mother Nature, and she has never consented to reveal her secrets ahead of time. Generally, it’s pretty safe to assume crops will not be as productive as in 2013.
The past year was, after all, record-setting, and the likelihood of repeating that seems remote. It would call for another near perfect year weather-wise, and on the Canadian Prairies, that just doesn’t seem possible, especially in the face of a colder than desired December. Once past the vagaries of weather, farmers still have to wonder what an American debt in the trillions means to the sector? The American dollar is stronger than it has been in months, but is that sustainable for a country awash in debt at the federal, state and municipal level? Or has the world psychologically written off the debt knowing it can never be repaid, and simply chosen the U.S. as the country to hang its financial future on in spite of that country’s obvious bad fiscal management? And, of course, we have to factor in market demand, too. Can China, India and Korea continue the growth that has buoyed commodity demand in recent years? The growth rates have softened, although they are outstripping most of the world. Any positive economic growth, when added to continued population growth in those countries, is good news in terms of agricultural product demand. In the end, 2014 remains pretty much a mystery, as it has always been for farmers, although if weather is anywhere near normal, it should be at worst another average year for producers, and ultimately, that is probably the best we can ask for over the longer term.

Water is arguably the most important resource we have, so whether we’re pumping it into homes or draining it from fields, everyone shares a stake in the control of H2O. The Water Security Agency (WSA) is now asking people across the province to give their insight into how water should be handled on agricultural land across the province. Online consultations for new drainage policy opened on Sept. 1 and will be available for public input until March 31, 2014. Ken Cheveldayoff, the minister responsible for the WSA, said water issues are ongoing, but the province is looking to take a step forward and get ahead of the game with the help of Saskatchewanians. “Agricultural drainage has been something that has been at the forefront of the Water Security Agency — and the Watershed Authority before that — right from the beginning. It’s something that governments have wrestled with over the last number of decades, and with the 25-year Water Security Plan, we want to make it front and centre,” said Cheveldayoff.
He added that opening up a forum to the public to discuss drainage issues is important in creating a broad discussion that will bring ideas forward and help draft new policy and regulations. Organizations like the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) and the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) are asking the WSA to create province-wide regulations, and that interest helped spur the creation of the drainage consultation process. “It’s not an easy issue because there are people on all sides of it, but we want to have a good, broad consultation and then come forward with regulations and a plan,” said the minister. The new policy will cover all types of drainage that takes place, from rivers and streams to sloughs and flooded fields. *** It seems at the upcoming After Dark concert series event, eight just isn’t quite enough. The series, which recently found a sponsor and will henceforth be known as Southern Plains Co-op After Dark, will be featuring its first big band While the evening typically involves a band of slung guitars and light percussion, this Friday’s concert will feature 8’s Enuff, an eight-piece big band, featuring a couple of alums from the Estevan Comprehensive School’s band program. Estevan alum and 8’s Enuff member
Linda Fortowsky spoke with the Mercury last week about the upcoming concert at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum. The band started with eight members in the summer of 1999. Everyone played in the Bandits Community Band, playing in concert and jazz bands. As any great band origin story, 8’s Enuff began with a couple of friends jamming. “Coming into the summer months a bunch of us were kind of like, ‘Jeez, you know, I’m not really ready to put the horns away yet.’ Bob, one of the sax players, he had some music given to him by another fellow who wasn’t using it anymore, so we got together and started jamming every Tuesday,” said Fortowsky. That fall they played their first show at a curling bonspiel beer garden in Regina. “From that point it was like, this is kind of fun. We’re having a blast playing this music. So we started playing for the long-term care facilities in Regina, and it just grew from there,” she added. The band includes keyboardist Dennis Hendrickson, drummer Bruce Thompson, bass player Brian Herman, Vlad Osatiuk who will be filling in for James Pasklar on the trumpet, John Hodsman playing the trombone, Dwight Milliker — the other Estevan native and graduate in 1972 — on the baritone sax, Bob Adams, Cliff Yee and George Hildebrandt on alto sax, and
Gord Gault sharing tenor sax duties with Fortowsky, who graduated in 1977.

We often think about veterans who served in the World Wars, but Canada’s servicemen and women have continued to serve in conflict areas around the world. Cort Barker served overseas in Bosnia in 2000 and 2003 as well as Afghanistan in 2006. Barker began a military life as early as he could, signing up as an 18-yearold in 1999. He grew up in Bienfait and moved back to Estevan following his nearly nine years in the Armed Forces. He is now partnered with Kent Phillips running Performance Pump Service in the Energy
City. B a r k e r ’s f a m i l y doesn’t have an extended history of military service, but he had a greatgrandfather who served in the Second World War, and he said a military life was something he had always wanted to have. Barker worked five years in armoured reconnaissance, as well as two years as a Leopard tank gunner and loader, completing his service attached to a medic unit in Afghanistan in 2006, retiring as a corporal shortly after his return. After serving in Bosnia and Afghanistan, he said one of the biggest differences to overcome was the extremes in weather, most prominently the Middle-East country’s heat. “It was really hot in Af-
Part 2 ghanistan. In the summer there, it was 57 degrees,” said Barker, noting there weren’t really any options to try to keep from sweating through his gear. “You just put up with it. You have 30 kilos of gear on too, (sitting) inside a steel box.” He noted that his time in the military had him acclimatizing to many extremes. Along with the Afghani summers, he spent time in the Arctic completing harsh-winter training. “We worked with the Rangers and the Inuit up there for a month. I had a great time up there, but I’d never go back there again. We would cut ice off the ice floes and melt it and drink it,” he said about the winter survival skills they learned. “We got to go on a seal hunt with the Inuit.” ⇢ Page 6

The new curator at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum wants to help foster an artistic community that is open to all. Ali King hails from England’s London, and spent time in Gothenburg, Sweden before working the last two years in Winnipeg. Living in London, King worked at Sotheby’s, the British Museum and a contemporary commercial art gallery. “I have an art history background,” she said regarding her bachelor’s degree in visual culture. She then pursued a master’s degree in museum studies, which she completed in Sweden.

teacher Patricia Klein. A class discussion was struck regarding Estevan’s new shelter that provides a warm bed for those who wouldn’t have one during the winter months. The shelter program recently restarted for this winter, welcoming guests to come in from the cold on Dec. 1. Klein said the students were surprised to hear there were people in Estevan who couldn’t afford a place to stay. “We came up with the idea back in October after reading a story called Shelter Folk,” said Klein. The story chronicles a girl and her family moving o ⇢ Page 7

“I was interested in museums, so I went to Gothenburg for that. As part of that course I had to do a practicum in a museum or gallery, so I ended up coming to the Winnipeg Art Gallery and I just sort of stayed for a year working for them.”

The Warm Welcome shelter started last winter, running a few nights each week, but this year the program has been expanded to run each night to ensure nobody has to sleep outside on some of the cold Prairie nights. The students are excited about the opportunity to help out those in need and provide some goods and holiday cheer for people living in the city who are experiencing some difficulty during the winter months. “It’s giving them a chance to give back to the community because so many of them come from more affluent families,” said Klein. “We talked about how we all get so much at Christmas and there are some people who don’t, who don’t even have homes
2013 Year In Review to live in, which is a shame in Estevan. It’s such a well off area. So, they’re really excited about it.” *** The Torquay Credit Union is now in the midst of merging with Radius Credit Union, effective March 31, 2014. In a meeting on Dec. 4, members of the small credit union voted 99 per cent in favour of the proposed merger. The following day, members of Radius Credit Union, which has offices in Radville, Avonlea, Ceylon, Pangman, Ogema and Tribune voted 100 per cent in favour of bringing Torquay under the Radius banner. Ann Favreau, Torquay Credit Union CEO, said the decision to move forward with the merger was because of the many positives it would provide to its members. “It’s something we’ve thought of for the last few years, and last year, during our planning session, we decided to take a closer look at our options,” said Favreau, who has worked
at the credit union for 11 years. “Merging is in the best interest of our members, and we determined merging with Radius would better serve our members.” The Torquay Credit Union will bring its $60 million in assets into the Radius fold, increasing the group’s assets to $255 million, as
management and commercial lending, as well as providing customers with higher lending limits. “It can really help the members that way. They
Part 2 can deal with the larger agricultural and commercial entities in the area,” added Favreau, noting they will have greater access to specialized expertise.
