Cheers to the City of Estevan public works employees. Within a half hour of my call, Daniel was at my door to suggest what my next step should be after we had water in our basement. Public works again responded to my inquiry to have a camera scope done on our sewer line, with no charge to me. It was confirmed that our sewer line wasn’t plugged; they did have suggestions and we will follow up on those. Thank you. Cheers to the shoppers mall. It’s so nice to drive down the “main road without avoiding the potholes. Now for the rest of the parking lot?

can? -- Jerry in Sedona, Ariz. A: My first thought about this kind of fix-all product is that it may be a great help as a temporary patch, but a damaged gutter or shingle eventually will need to be fixed properly. And major damage, such as a ripped or cracked gutter, probably won’t hold up long with a spray-on patch. I haven’t tried the product in question, so I could, of course, be wrong about its capabilities. However, there are other spray-on rubber brands available at hardware and home-improvement stores. None that I’ve seen claim to fix leaks and large cracks; they’re advertised as sealants and as spray-on nonslip sur-
facing. They also cost much less, on average, than the product being advertised on television, especially with the cost of shipping and handling removed. If you decide to purchase the product, I’d say it would likely work best as a sealant for gaps around things like air conditioning ducts and where pipes emerge from the wall. Using it to patch areas or objects that bear weight -like the joints between gutter sections, cracks in a deck’s wood flooring and so on -- is probably not a good use for the product. For patching the roof, I’d be very careful about using it: Eventually, a leaky area of the roof will need more permanent repairs. Replacement of damaged shingles or
flashing, as well as repair of the damaged area, could be hindered, not helped, by the presence of spray-on rubber. HOME TIP: Need to mark the location of a leak so you can find it while on the rooftop? In the attic, locate where the water is coming in a drive a 10-penny nail upward so that it pushes up the shingle above. The former “Get the Scoop building will now be located at the gates of Boundary Dam.
Fun day at the beach for everyone Boundary Dam beach will be the place to be July 14, as Tourism Estevan and Woodlawn Regional Park host the 2012 Beach Bash in honour of the park’s 50th anniversary. Plans for this celebration only started about a month ago, but with great support from the community and businesses, it has turned into what promises to be a great day. Estevan Chamber of Commerce marketing and events co-ordinator Rebecca Howie said it all started with the television show Fishin’ Canada coming to town. “We knew Woodlawn Regional Park was planning activities for the 50th anniversary, so we teamed up with them, said Howie. After a disastrous year for the park last season with all the flooding, Howie said
she hopes this event reminds everyone of what we have in town. “Boundary Dam is a great spot in the community, and I don’t think it has been used to its potential, she said. “The park went through a lot last year and we hope this event moves things forward and celebrates what a great space it is. The excitement at the park will begin at 3 p.m. and will go into the night. There are lots of activities planned for people of all ages. “This is a family event with something for everyone, said Howie. “But we also have activities for the 20-year-olds. Activities will include sand castle competitions, beach volleyball, football activities, face painting and crafts. There will also be no
shortage of entertainment for people in attendance. No Boundaries Wakeboard Club and the Estevan Trapshooting Club will both be on hand to give demonstrations. And cover band Stuck on Red will be playing live for all the guests at the beach. Of course Boundary Dam is a popular place for fishing and anyone who is a fan of the sport should be coming down to this event. Pete Bowman from Fishin’ Canada will be on hand to film the wide mouth large bass episode and people will also have the chance to meet him. Other fishing activities include a virtual fishing simulator from Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, learning to cast from the Ministry of Environment and a chance to learn more about local fishing from a biologist.
With all these activities, people are bound to work up an appetite and there will be a barbecue there for all in attendance. The charge for this great day of fun at the beach just may be the best part, as everyone gets in for free. Howie said they’re able to make an event like this free thanks to sponsors and the community helping out. “The business community, associations and local groups all came together to make this day happen, she said. Just when you thought the event couldn’t get any better, there are fireworks to cap off the celebrations at the park. “I think the fireworks will be a huge draw, said Howie. “We haven’t had much fireworks in the past in Estevan and we hope lots of people come out to watch.

My not so rose coloured glasses As a columnist, there is nothing better than getting feedback on pieces that you have written, positive or negative, it doesn't matter. It's just nice to know that people are reading what you write and discussions are getting started. My column last week about the city's poor road conditions, came under some criticism for being too negative by Councillor Chris Istace. There is no denying that there was lots of complaining going on in that piece, and Istace brought up an excellent point that being positive is the best way to make a change. So I decided to take a look at the positive sides that come with horrible roads in Estevan. After mulling over it for a day, I came up with some positives, but I'm not sure this will help get our roads fixed. The roads in Estevan are a big problem, there is no arguing that fact. However one of the reasons for the road conditions is all the traffic that is now coming through town with the current state of our economy. More traffic equals more damage and deterioration to our roads. People across the country and world would love to be in the same situation as this town
Rhys Kelso Rhys’ Pieces is in now, so maybe the poor street conditions is just one of the things we have to put up with. With the boom also comes an increased demand on construction workers. The amount of construction going on in Estevan is crazy and there is no doubt that businesses cannot keep up with the workload. A positive is that the construction companies are busy, but unfortunately that may make it harder for the city to get work done on roads that need it. Maybe the city needs more construction companies or maybe the city should start to look at bringing in outside contractors to start to help with the work. Of course bringing in outside crews will cost more money, but is it worth it to get some roads repaired? My view on city roads is no doubt jaded, but imagine not being able to access your place of employment without walking across construction and taking a detour everyday for months on end.
I can do more than just complain, though. I see the good things that are happening in Estevan. I have had the chance to get involved with the Estevan Bruins and see all the great work they do for the community. I have also had the chance to work with the Kinsmen Club of Estevan and see the many things they do for this community. One of the things that makes this city great is the volunteers. With that said, it's not up to the volunteers to fix the roads of Estevan and no matter how much optimism we talk about the streets, the fact is they're a problem. The city is not full of rainbows and butterflies, business is booming in town, but that also brings issues like the roads and lack of housing. Like getting feedback on my columns, I believe negative or positive feedback in real life is also useful. If I didn't think it was a problem or didn't care about the city, I wouldn't bring it up. As a newcomer to the city, I thought it might be useful to see Estevan through the eyes of a newbie, since there are so many of us here. But maybe all of us outsiders here should do as the councillor suggested in a tweet and buy a bus ticket to our hometowns if we want to complain about this one.
Cattle industry changes with the times Trends in agriculture are always interesting to follow. Having grown up in the purebred livestock business, and having attended livestock shows from the time I was knee high to a cowboy boot, it has been particularly interesting to see how the size of cattle has changed through the years. While not even a forethought in the 1950s, I have certainly seen enough pictures from that era to understand what they mean when they talk about “belt buckle” cattle. For the ‘50s, and well into the 1960s, the champion cattle in most shows were just that, about as tall as the showman’s belt buckle. That is almost impossible to imagine in this era, but that is the way the industry viewed perfection at the time. The arrival of the so-called exotic breeds from Europe were led by Charolais. The first Charolais into Canada actually arrived in the late 1950s, but it was the mid-1960s before the breed really arrived in numbers and began to significantly change the industry. Charolais were simply bigger cattle, and the North American cattle sector was quick to see value in larger frames on which to put pounds of beef. Of course Charolais were not the only
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist big breed to arrive and help the conversion to bigger cattle here. They were followed by breeds such as Simmental, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Gelbvieh and a rather long list of European breeds. Some, such as Charolais and Simmental, are now completely ingrained in our cattle industry and have become cornerstones. Other breeds, such as Chianina, Marchigiana, and a few others arrived in the pursuit of ever-bigger cattle, but then all but disappeared again. While some of the largest European breeds imported to Canada ended up having limited impact, through selection, the cattle industry more or less adopted the adage “Go big, or go home.” For years, you certainly saw that in show rings, where the eyes of judges’ were drawn to bigger. The days of bulls reaching only a
cattleman’s belt buckle were gone, and cattle become behemoths. But like many things, the size of cattle eventually went too far. Cattleman would talk about how efficient 1300-1400 pound cows were, but their pastures were populated by animals several pounds heavier. But recently there has been a moderation. That was evident this past week at Yorkton Exhibition. At the Regional 4-H Beef Show at the Ex’ Wednesday, Judge Gerry Bertholet talked about moderate frames in his comments, and in the heifer classes, big females were not always red ribbon winners over more moderate ones. In an interview with this writer, Saskatchewan Angus Gold judge Garner Deobold also talked about how big might have been the key to winning a decade ago, but it was no longer automatic. He said while small cattle don’t have the effi ciencies needed by the industry, and suggested in some situations that big can work, moderation is where the industry is now focused. Like a pendulum, the size of cattle went from one extreme to the other over some 40 years. And now, it is settling somewhere between the two, creating more efficient animals to match producer needs in the process.

It’s not because I don’t like what I’m doing, but because Pintrest is fantastically amusing and sometimes I need a little bit of web-surfing time to jar my brain back into writing mode. All of my time online somehow convinced me that I am a “do-it-yourself” person, deep down in my soul. But I figured painting a dresser that only has four drawers can’t be that tough. I mean, I’m only a year away from an arts degree, what can’t
I do? So I went to Lowes, partly because I’ve never been there and partly because I really enjoy their TV commercials. I wandered aimlessly around the paint section until a woman working there spotted my helpless, lost expression. In 20 minutes, she had me set up with brushes, rollers, tape and pretty much picked out my colours for me, plus taught me everything I needed to know about how to paint something. This was a life changing moment and I’m sure I’ll look back on it every time I paint something for the rest of my life.

What’s the best way to keep cool in the summer?
He She He She Said
For the past couple of weeks, Saskatchewan has experienced an amazingly hot summer, mixed in with a few good summer thunderstorms. As the hot weather continues, people are looking for good ways to keep cool. Now, the best way to keep cool is stay indoors where there is air conditioning. Luckily for me, working in an office job it is easy for me to do, but there are lots of people who work outside who don’t get that luxury. Unfortunately for those that work outside, I don’t think there is much you can do to stay cool while on the job. You could always pick up some cold gel packs to cool you down, but it will probably only offer temporary relief. Once everyone is done work, there are lots of options to keep cool. One of my favourites is a nice cold drink. Make sure you drink enough water to stay hydrated, but drinks with a little kick to them also seem to help you relax and cool off. I have always been a firm believer that your feet and head act as temperature controls for your whole body, so do your best to keep them cool. Maybe take a lawn chair down to Boundary Dam, walk a couple of feet into the water and set up shop with your feet soaking in the water. If you don’t want to leave your house, how about filling up that kiddie pool with water and some ice cubes? Then get your chair and soak your feet. For your head, a cloth soaked in cold water always works nicely and cools you off quickly. If you’re looking for a place inside to go cool off, but don’t have air conditioning at your house, I have found that libraries are a great public place to go that always seem to be cool. The bonus is there is also lots to keep you busy at the library. Hopefully people can get some use out of these tips, but for everyone who can’t stand this heat, don’t worry. We live in Canada remember, soon the winter will be here, and we will all be trying to stay warm. –Rhys Kelso
First of all, there a few simple steps to being chilly in the heat: spend time in air conditioning; wear light, loose clothing and avoid being outside when the day is its hottest. These three are obvious. If you don’t have AC, go somewhere that does. Shorts and tanks are more comfortable than sweaters right now anyway. And why would you want to spend time outside while it’s this hot? But beyond these solutions, I try to get creative. I put my fan and a bowl of ice beside my bed, because my apartment bedroom isn’t air conditioned. So rather than sleeping in the living room every night, I attempt to use my fan as a make-shift air conditioner. As well, carrying the resulting bowl of water out of my room in the morning usually means splashes of the liquid on my shins and feet, which is both shocking and refreshing. There’s also the “let’s pretend we’re on the beach option that I sometimes explore. Put on a swim suit, lay a blanket on the floor of the living room, prop a fan nearby to imitate a nice breeze and enjoy. This is great, because it cools you off and there’s no risk of sun exposure. And at this time of year, even looking outdoors for any amount of time can result in a sunburn. I always find that any time spent in swimwear motivates me to get to the gym and work out, which is healthy (so long as the gym is air conditioned). I’ve also taken to making homemade Popsicles. My latest creation has two layers of juice around a layer of strawberries and vanilla yogurt. Have to say, pretty tasty. I don’t, however, recommend eating Popsicles outside in this kind of weather. It’s kind of like leaving M&Ms in your pocket and putting your pants through the dryer: messy. Anyway, that’s how I’m staying cool while it’s hot outside. Remember: drink lots of water and don’t forget the sunscreen! – Tonaya Marr

Nipawin fishing tourney raises awareness for PTSD Provincial NIPAWIN, Sask. Combat veterans from across Canada and the U.S. will invade a small town in Saskatchewan this summer — to fish. The group Wounded Warriors says it will hold a fishing tournament in Nipawin in late August to raise awareness of posttraumatic stress disorder and homelessness among veterans. About 60 veterans are expected for the three-day event, which will run from Aug. 24 to 26. The group’s director, Blake Emmons, says the original idea started with him and his friends sitting around a campfire talking about freedom. Now he says that instead of just a few Vietnam veterans involved, there are dozens of people taking part. The Saskatchewan Union of Nurses are supporting the vets by donating $10,000 to the tournament. National OTTAWA - The Supreme Court of Canada is interrupting its summer break today to hear a Tory MP’s appeal of the decision to overturn his election win. The outcome of the case will determine whether Prime Minister Stephen Harper has to call a byelection in the Toronto riding of Etobicoke Centre. Tory MP Ted Opitz won the riding by just 26 votes over Liberal Borys Wrzesnewskyj in last year’s federal election. But Wrzesnewskyj went to court, claiming procedural irregularities.
Earlier this year, an Ontario Superior Court judge found that Elections Canada officials made clerical errors at the polls. After Justice Thomas Lederer threw out 79 votes and overturned the final result, Opitz appealed the case to the high court. Only five other election results have been nullified by the courts since 1949. None of those rulings were appealed and byelections were quickly called to re-determine the will of the people in each riding. The Etobicoke Centre result was overturned on the grounds that paperwork was not properly filled out for voters who needed someone to vouch for their identity or who were left off the list of electors. In his ruling, Lederer specifically stressed the irregularities were the result of clerical errors by wellmeaning Elections Canada officials, not the product of fraud or intentional wrongdoing. Since then, however, Wrzesnewskyj has resurrected other more serious allegations of ballot-box stuffing and voter suppression by Opitz’s campaign, though nothing has been proven. *** HALIFAX - The federal government has signed a $9.3-million deal with Irving Shipbuilding to get started on the navy shipbuilding contract in Halifax. Defence Minister Peter MacKay says the contract will allow the shipbuilding company to review the design and devise a construction plan for the Arctic
offshore patrol ships. Those are the first vessels expected to be built under the overall $35-billion national shipbuilding procurement project. In October, Ottawa announced that the Irving shipyard would receive the lion’s share of the project. Under its $25-billion deal, Irving will build 21 combat vessels. *** EDMONTON - Electric utilities across Alberta say they’ve instituted rotating blackouts to deal with increased demand caused by high temperatures. Ti m L e R i c h e , a spokesman Epcor Power, which provides electricity for Edmonton, says the agency that oversees electricity distribution in the province has issued a directive for utilities to reduce consumption. LeRiche says the blackouts in Edmonton have already started. He says each blackout will last about an hour, and he has no idea how long they’ll continue. Calgary and Lethbridge have also instituted rolling blackouts. A news release issued by the agency on Monday afternoon urged Albertans to conserve power, and said that there is difficulty dealing with enough power to supply the grid. The release does not mention blackouts. It says people should continue to reduce power consumption until 6 p.m. Monday. LeRiche noted that drivers needed to be careful as traffic lights were out in some parts of Edmonton. International

MIAMI - Hurricane Emilia has strengthened to a Category 4 storm as it swirls over the Pacific, far from land. The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds early Tuesday (July 10) are near 140 mph (220 kph). Emilia is centred about 680 miles (1,095 kilometres) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California and is moving west-northwest near 12 mph (19 kph). Farther west in the Pacific, Daniel has weakened to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 70 mph (110 kph). Daniel is centred about 1,440 miles (2,315 kilometres) east of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving west near 16 mph (26 kph). *** PARIS - The widow of Yasser Arafat will file a legal complaint in France asking authorities to investigate her husband’s death, about which she has recently raised new suspicions, her lawyer said Tuesday. Palestinian authorities gave final approval this week for the former
Palestinian leader’s body to be exhumed and asked for an international investigation into his 2004 death in a French military hospital. That came on the heels of a broadcast last week by Arab satellite TV channel Al-Jazeera, which said it had conducted a ninemonth investigation into the leader’s death after his widow, Suha, handed over Arafat’s medical file and what she said was a duffel bag of his belongings. Included in the bag were a fur hat and a woolen cap with some of his hair, a toothbrush, and clothing with his urine and blood stains. Switzerland’s Institute of Radiation Physics detected elevated traces of polonium-210 — a rare and highly lethal substance — on the belongings, but said the findings were inconclusive and that Arafat’s bones would have to be tested. That prompted a request to have his remains exhumed; Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas decided to go ahead with that earlier this week. ***
PAMPLONA, Spain - Four people suffered bumps and bruises but no one was gored in the fourth day of the running of the bulls at Pamplona on Tuesday. A local hospital said those daredevils sustained injuries to the head, legs or arm in the relatively clean and fast run through the old quarter of the city. None of the injuries was serious. All four were Spaniards. The six fighting bulls weighing as much 620 kilos (1,360 lbs) stayed together in a pack for much of the dash, which was good because an isolated bull is more likely to get disoriented and charge at people. They run with steer that are supposed to keep the bulls in a tight pack. Four more runs remain at Spain’s most famous summer festival. Three people — an American and two Britons — were gored in Monday’s run but none was seriously hurt. The festival became world famous after Ernest Hemingway wrote about it in his novel “The Sun Also Rises.

Berry claims victory at Estevan mod tour stop Aaron Turnbull leads local pack on Night 3 of tour Hank Berry was cruising. With the biggest question being who would finish second, a yellow flag with four laps to go set the table for a dramatic finish Tuesday on the Estevan stop of the Dakota Classic Modified Tour. After the restart, Berry held off a strong challenge from Steve Arpin to win the race and solidify his grasp on first place in the tour standings after three nights. The Sidney, Mont., native said there were good and bad things about the caution, which came with Ed Turnbull and Arpin battling for second place, well behind Berry. “In one respect I was kind of glad to see it, because then it was an open trail ahead of me, it opens up the track. But on the second (hand), everybody’s ganged up right behind you and they’re chomping at the bit to come get you, said Berry.
Montana driver Hank Berry (25) was the class of the field Tuesday night at the Dakota Classic Modified Tour stop in Estevan. Berry outlasted a field of 26 cars to capture the A main and stretch his lead on the tour’s point standings. “It was tough because it was winding down, here I am kind of cruising, and then all of a sudden, ‘man, they’re coming, now they’re going to be all over me.’ Arpin finished second, with Turnbull falling back
to fifth after the restart. Turnbull’s son Aaron took full advantage of the yellow, finishing in third place after barely advancing from the B-mains and starting the feature in 16th. “There were a lot of good cars in the B-main. I
didn’t think I’d make it up to transfer, but the car was really good and had a good
line, said Turnbull. “It was good to get a good finish after the crappy start to the night in the heat race. Turnbull spoke about how he got past his dad after the late caution. “I think I caught a couple of them sleeping. My dad slid up and I got under him and I had to rub him a little bit, but it was the end of the race, so I had to go, he laughed. Jeff Taylor, who won the second leg of the tour Monday in Minot, settled for fourth after being passed by Turnbull on the last turn. Berry said he’s not taking anything for granted despite holding a 13-point lead over second-place Todd Dart entering the fourth leg Wednesday in Williston. “I’ve been fortunate to get three in a row that
were good, but it’s only halfway there, so anything can happen, he said. “But I definitely can’t complain about what’s going on. It’s nice to be sitting where we’re sitting. In the stock car class, which is also part of the Dakota tour, Minot’s Steven Pfeifer took over the lead early and survived a couple of cautions to earn the win. The hobby stock feature took more than 45 minutes to complete, partly due to a 20-minute delay when a fan required medical attention from the onsite ambulance. Eric Sinness of Williston won the race. Brad King, who won the feature at EMS on Saturday, led for a large portion of the race, hanging on despite a plethora of cautions. But Sinness passed him on the second-last lap of the race.
Here are the top 10 drivers in the point standings on the Dakota Classic Modified Tour after three nights, as well as local drivers (name and total points): 1. Hank Berry, 116 2. Todd Dart, 103 T3. Jeff Taylor, 98 T3. Tyson Turnbull, 98 T3. Mike Hansen, 98 6. Steven Pfeifer, 97 7. John Hansen, 96 8. Ed Turnbull, 90 9. Will Brack, 87
10. Shawn Strand, 85 13. Aaron Turnbull, 81 25. Joey Gallaway, 56 26. Les McLenehan, 54 27. Kody Scholpp, 53 30. Tyler Wagner, 46 32. Riley Emmel, 42 50. Mason Big Eagle, 33 60. Derrick Lisafeld, 22
Paul Leach’s car is towed off the track following a pileup involving multiple vehicles during a B-main prior to the Dakota Classic Modified Tour stop at Estevan Motor Speedway on Tuesday.

Woods back on trail to magic “18 Where would sports be without statistics? No one would know whom the playoff contenders were if somebody didn’t keep track of the wins and losses. Batting titles, most valuable player awards, scoring championships ... all based on stats. So it was intriguing the other day to read a story online about the most significant numbers in sports. The author determined that “18 was today’s most significant number. (We’ll get to the “why a little further down.) If you’re a baseball fan, you know the magic surrounding 56. That’s the consecutive game-hitting streak accomplished in 1941 by Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees. Pete Rose got to 44 in the 1980s, but no one has come closer. It’s regarded as one of sports’ most unbreakable records (other than, in some quarters, 18). If you’re a hockey fan, 50 used to be the magic number. A 50-goal season was Hall of Fame territory,

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist but now the record is 92 in a season (Wayne Gretzky, naturally). Do you recognize 212? That’s Gretzky’s one-season point total and if DiMaggio’s 56 is unattainable, then The Great One’s 212 has to be equally insurmountable. Basketball has Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game. Football? The 2,104yard rushing season of Eric Dickerson. But the number of most significance in 2012 is 18 the number of major golf championships won by the all-time leader, Jack Nicklaus. Tiger Woods - love him or hate him - is at 14 and will be gunning for No. 15 this week at the British Open in England. At the age of 36, Woods has more money than he’ll ever need. He has 74 tournament titles, only eight short of the all-time record of 82 held by Sam Snead, so it’s almost a given he’ll eclipse that one. The 18 majors, though? To him, it’s a sacred number and the golf community is divided on whether Woods will get there. Since winning three PGA tourneys this year (Bay Hill, the Memorial, and the AT&T), Woods’ fans are convinced Tiger is all the way back from his post-scandal slump and health woes. But he blew a chance to win June’s U.S. Open after leading at the halfway mark and has two
more “major’ chances this year (England this week and the PGA in August) to get closer to Nicklaus’ magic 18. If Tiger gets close in the next couple of years, the whole world will be inundated with the importance of “18. Fielder crushes 23 homers; wins HR derby National MONTREAL - Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo missed practice Monday with a bruised left shoulder. The 39-year-old pivot was hurt in Montreal’s 4130 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night. Alouettes head coach M a r c Tr e s t m a n s a y s Calvillo woke up Monday morning with a sore shoulder and had tests done later in the day. Trestman added the veteran quarterback’s status for Thursday’s home game against the Calgary Stampeders is up in the air. *** TO R O N TO - T h e Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff continues to be decimated by injuries. The club announced Monday night that lefthanded reliever Luis Perez will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his throwing elbow. The Jays say Perez will get a second opinion before a course of action is determined, but
Tommy John ligamentreplacement surgery is often recommended for similar injuries. Blue Jays starter Kyle Drabek is already out for the year after tearing the same ligament in his pitching elbow. He underwent Tommy John surgery last month. The Jays have had seven pitchers on the disabled list this season at one time or another and are currently without starters Drew Hutchison (elbow sprain) and Brandon Morrow (strained rib cage muscle). Perez has made 35 appearances in relief this season, going 2-2 with a 3.43 earned-run average. The 27-year-old was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with left elbow tightness. He left Toronto’s 11-9 win over the Chicago White Sox with a team trainer in the seventh inning after giving up hits to Alex Rios and Alexei Ramirez. *** EDMONTON - The Edmonton Eskimos will be without Adarius Bowman for the rest of season after
the veteran slotback tore both the ACL and MCL in his left knee. The five-year CFL veteran suffered the injury in Sunday’s 17-1 road loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Eskimos general manager Eric Tillman called the injury “terrible news for this young man and our club in a statement released Monday night. “Our prayers will be with him for a full recovery, Tillman said. “Adarius is blessed with a very competitive drive and spirit, and that tenacity will be one of his greatest assets during this process. Bowman, who turns 27 on Tuesday, joined Edmonton prior to last season and amassed career-highs in catches (62) and receiving yards (1,153) to go along with four touchdowns. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native had nine receptions and 145 yards through the air through two games this season. International KANSAS CITY, Mo.
- Prince Fielder made a splash at the All-Star Home Run Derby. Eight of them. The Detroit slugger joined Ken Griffey Jr. as the only players to win multiple titles, thrilling the crowd at Kauffman Stadium with several shots into the right-field fountain and beating Toronto’s Jose Bautista 12-7 in the final Monday night. “Just being mentioned with him is real special, said Fielder, who spent time at Griffey’s house when he was a kid. “My dad would let me go over and play video games all day. He always took care of me when I was a kid. Fielder had a total of 28 home runs over three rounds to cap the main event on the eve of the All-Star game. He hit the four longest drives of the night, including a pair at 476 feet. While the ball stayed out of McCovey Cove during the 2007 Derby at San Francisco’s AT&T Park and the right-field swimming pool last year at Chase Field in Phoenix, there was plenty of aquatic
activity in Kansas City, second only to Rome for most fountains in cities around the world. When he won three years ago in St. Louis, Fielder’s 23 homers included a 503-foot drive that disappeared between two sections of bleachers in right-centre. Griffey won titles in 1994 at Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium, 1998 at Denver’s Coors Field and 1999 at Boston’s Fenway Park. *** MARSEILLE, France - Judicial officials say Tour de France rider Remy Di Gregorio has been arrested at his team hotel in connection with a doping investigation. The sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly due to an ongoing investigation. Di Gregorio’s Cofidis team was staying in Bourgen-Bresse on Tuesday during the Tour’s first rest day. Sources say two other people were arrested in Marseille in connection with the investigation. The investigation began last June and is
led by France’s police agency responsible for anti-doping investigations, OCLAESP, and the Marseille police. *** NEW DELHI - A 27-year-old football player in the eastern city of Jalpaiguri died after failing to receive medical attention following a collision with the opposition goalkeeper in a local match, India media reported on Tuesday. Mahesh Thapa, who was playing for Raikatpara Sports Association against Bhanu Nagar at a remote ground, died after being refused admission to three hospitals because no beds were available, the Indian Express reported. Thapa was ferried between hospitals on a motorcycle as no ambulance was available. He’s the second football-related death in India within four months. A Bangalore player, D. Venkatesh, died in March after suffering cardiac arrest on the field. No ambulance was available and Venkatesh was taken to hospital in a three-wheel auto-rickshaw.

A defensive gem Apparently they could still get better. After the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ 43-16 victory in Hamilton in Week 1, head coach Corey Chamblin said he was looking for improvement from his defence in their Week 2 game at home to Edmonton Sunday afternoon. After all, they gave up a touchdown against the Tiger-Cats! Chamblin made three defensive changes for the Edmonton game, including replacing their starting cornerbacks, and boy did they ever improve. The Riders almost pitched a shutout against Kavis Reed’s Eskimos on a steamy prairie day, squeaking out a 17-1 victory before the largest crowd (attendance was 31,459) to ever witness a Rider home opener. No, this time they did not allow a touchdown. “I told the guys it was gonna be a 42-man effort and it was, Chamblin explained after the match. “It was a defensive battle. I said they were gonna do ball control and they did. On offence, Kory Sheets, I told him to keep grinding, and he did. Sheets scored the only touchdown of the day, a 34-yard run with just over two minutes remaining to seal the deal. It was part of his 92 yards rushing against a nearly-impossible Edmonton defensive front. Let’s be honest; the game was an eyesore. That is if you don’t appreciate a defensive chess match. And quite frankly, I don’t. Both offences looked like they were running in quicksand with shackles on. Ugh! But
Rod Pedersen Rider Insider the position that created the most excitement was the Rider defensive end spots as Brent Hawkins and Odell Willis had a field day. They each had a sack while Hawkins recovered a fumble and Willis knocked down a pass. “I told Hawkins after the fmble recovery that I would have been happier if he’d scored, Chamblin laughed. “He said ‘Coach you always want more!’ But I’m real happy with the production on defence. It’s becoming evident to anyone who watches this team on a daily basis that Chamblin is a relentless taskmaster. He sat down a player during the week because he didn’t care for his effort level in practice! Under normal circumstances you would think players would be getting fed up with the level of
commitment that Chamblin demands, but just the opposite is happening. The results speak for themselves. After two weeks, the Riders are 2-0 and tied for first in the CFL West with the B.C. Lions. For anyone who watched the game, it’s pretty clear how excited these Rider players are becoming with the new attitude. The sideline frowns of 2011 have been replaced by grins and high-fives in 2012. Now the Riders face their toughest challenge to date - a match-up with the CFL’s best team, the B.C. Lions Saturday at 1 p.m. in Regina. “B.C. got after us pretty good in the preseason (a 44-10 Rider loss), but they’re a good football team, Chamblin maintained. “They’re the Cup champs. They’re gonna bring a good game and we’ll have our hands full. So far it doesn’t look like anything the Riders can’t handle.

The Old Acre • It was double Nobel Prize-winning chemist and peace activist Linus Pauling who made the following sage observation: “The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas.â€? • The acre as a unit of measurement has been with us for quite some time. Originally, an acre was considered to be the amount of land that could be tilled in a single day by one man behind one ox. • If you’ve seen the movie “The Wizard of Oz,â€? you might remember that in the Emerald City, the horses were a variety of bright colors. No special effects there -- the set designers simply rubbed the animals with Jell-O powder to achieve the bright hues. Those scenes had to be shot very quickly, though, since the horses had a tendency to lick off their colors. • If you spent some part of the 1980s trying to puzzle
out a solution to a Rubik’s Cube, you may be surprised to learn that the world record, held by Frenchman Edouard Chambon, is just 9.18 seconds. And it was set in 2008. • You may not have learned about it in school, but during the summer and early autumn of 1859, the United States and the British became involved in a conflict known as The Pig War. In June of that year, a pig on American soil was shot by a British infantryman in Canada. In response to the provocation, the American militia camped out on the border for four months, until the British finally apologized. No lives were lost (other than the pig’s). • Those who study such things say that the lightning on Jupiter is 1,000 times more powerful than the lightning here on Earth. *** Thought for the Day: “A person who trusts no one can’t be trusted.â€? -- Jerome Blattner

Outdoor Fire Pit Safety
With summer just around the corner, it’s time for families to enjoy an evening around their backyard fire pits. To ensure your summer fun is not dampened, keep in mind a few fire safety tips while using your outdoor fire pit. -Many people are allergic to smoke, so be courteous to your neighbours and don’t allow smoke from your fire to interfere with their enjoyment of the outdoors. -Keep your fire manageable. Large fires can give off excessive amounts of heat, which could easily ignite surrounding combustible materials (fences, decks, sheds). -Never start a fire in your pit with flammable liquids. Remember your boy scout days, and start it with small kindling. -Small children should always be kept a safe distance from the fire pit. -Keep a garden hose nearby, just in case hot embers do escape. -Never leave your fire unattended. Before you retire for the evening, soak your fire down with water to ensure all hot embers are completely extinguished. -A permit is required for all outdoor fire pits. They’re free. Just drop by the Fire Hall for a permit application. -If requested to extinguish your fire by a City Official (Police or Fire), please do so immediately. Failure to comply will result in a revoked permit, and a fee for service should the Fire Department be called to extinguish it on your behalf.

If a severe storm is on the way, the weather service uses the local media and Environment Canada’s Weather Radio to alert the public. There are two basic types of alerts: A Weather watch is provided when conditions are favorable for a severe storm to develop. These are usually issued early in the day. It is a good idea to pay attention to the weather and listen to the radio or TV for up-dated information. A Weather Warning means that severe weather is happening or that severe weather conditions are very likely. A thunderstorm develops in an unstable atmosphere when warm moist air near the earth’s surface rises quickly and cools. The moisture condenses to form rain droplets and dark thunder clouds. These storms are often accompanied by hail, lightning, heavy rain, high winds and tornadoes. Thunderstorms are usually over in an hour, although a series of thunderstorms can last for several hours. Lightning –During a thunderstorm the air is charged with electricity. Bolts of lightning hit the ground at about 40,000 km per second – so fast that the series of strikes hitting the ground appear as a single bolt. What To Do When There Is Lightning: 1. Estimate how far away the lightning is. Every second between the flash of lightning and the thunderclap equals 300 meters. If you count fewer than 30 seconds, take shelter immediately. 2. If indoors, stay away from windows, doors, fireplaces, radiators, sinks, bathtubs, appliances, metal pipes, telephones and other things which conduct electricity. (You can use a cell phone) 3. Unplug radios, computers and televisions. 4. Do not go to rescue the laundry on the clothesline as it conducts electricity. If outdoors, take shelter in a building, ditch or a culvert but never under a tree. 5. If caught in the open, do not lie flat but crouch in the leap frog position and lower your head. 6. Do not ride bicycles, motorcycles or golf carts or use metal tools as they conduct electricity. 7. If swimming or in a boat, get back to shore immediately. 8. If you are in a car, stay there but pull away from trees which might fall on you. 9. You may resume activity 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Tornadoes Tornadoes are violent windstorms identified by their twisting funnel- shaped cloud. They are always produced by thunderstorms, but not every thunderstorm produces a tornado. They travel between 20 to 90 km/h, are erratic and can change course suddenly. Do not chase tornadoes. Tornado Watch means the weather could develop a tornado. Tornado Warning means a tornado has been seen or it is very likely that one will develop shortly.
Warning Signs of Tornadoes: • Severe thunderstorms with frequent thunder and lightning • An extremely dark sky sometimes highlighted by green or yellow clouds • A rumbling sound, such as a freight train or a whistling sound similar to a jet aircraft • A funnel cloud at the rear of a thunder cloud often behind a curtain of heavy rain or hail What to Do During a Tornado: If you are near a building: 1. Listen to your radio during severe thunderstorms 2. If a Tornado Warning has been issued take cover immediately. 3. Go to the basement or take shelter in a small interior ground floor room, closet or hallway. 4. Protect yourself by sitting under a heavy table or desk. 5. Stay away from windows and outside walls and doors. 6. Do not use elevators. 7. Avoid large halls, churches, arenas etc.: their roofs are more likely to collapse. 8. Stay close to the ground, protect your head and hide from flying debris. If you are driving: 1. If you are driving try to get to a nearby shelter –drive away from the tornado at a right angle. 2. Do not get caught in a car or mobile home – take shelter elsewhere. If no shelter is available, lie face down in a ditch or culvert away from the vehicle or mobile home. 3. If a tornado seems to be standing still, it is either traveling away from you or heading right for you. 4. Stay close to the ground, protect your head and hide from flying debris.zv Hail: Hail forms when updrafts in thunderclouds carry raindrops upwards into extremely cold areas and freeze layer upon layer until they are too heavy and fall to the ground Hailstones vary in size from peas to grapefruits and fall at great speed. People have been seriously injured by hailstones. What to Do When It Hails: 1. Take cover when hail begins to fall. 2. Do not go out to cover plants, cars or garden furniture or to rescue animals.
