Bienfait firefighters have their new toy There’s a shiny new truck in Bienfait.

Residents received their first glimpse of the town’s new fire truck when it was first unveiled at the Canada Day parade in Bienfait. The Bienfait Fire Department’s recently purchased truck was brought into Canada just days before that at the end of June.

Engine 4 is not yet in service, but Brian Smyth, Bienfait’s fire chief, said that if they needed it, they could send it to a fire.

The search for the new truck sent them looking at about 500 trucks online before finding the one they wanted. He and two others went down to Port Neches, Texas to look at the truck.

The small city is just north of the Gulf of Mexico near the Louisiana border. “We had a look at the truck, and it was spotless, and it was clean,� said Smyth. “It wasn’t the only one we had picked out.

There was another one at the same fire hall sitting right next to it. We spent five minutes looking at it and five hours looking at this one. This was the better deal, and it was their front line truck.�

The truck with a 750-gallon tank was well looked after, with low mileage and low hours on it. Almost new, said Smyth. The truck is a 1999, although when they went down to Texas, they thought they would be looking at a 1998 truck because it was advertised as such. It wasn’t until they got to customs heading

back into the country that they realized it was one year newer.

Smyth noted it has five self-contained breathing apparatus seats and it allows them to haul all their firefighters inside with equipment as well. “It has a huge pump on it, that we probably didn’t need anything that size, but when you’re shopping used, you take what you can get.�

After bringing the truck to Canada, they immediately got the vehicle safetied and installed the decals on it.

The fire department’s older trucks are hovering around 40 years, so the new wheels are very welcome to the 14 firefighters currently serving the town of Bienfait.

Smyth noted that it isn’t just that the vehicle is newer and has fewer miles on it, but that the equipment is a big step forward in technology. Their old truck pumped water at 500 gallons per minute, while the new one pumps 2,000 gallons in that time.

The truck was left with about $30,000 to $35,000 worth of equipment on it.

The Port Neches department left hose, nozzles and valves. “This city had two fire trucks that they were trading in on one new truck, so they had an extra set of equipment. I just asked the fire chief if he wouldn’t mind leaving what he doesn’t want on the truck and sending it to us. There’s probably $25,000 worth of

hose,� said Smyth, adding that, “They actually took it out of service early to give it to us, because Port Neches was having a new truck built.�

It means they don’t have to buy the equipment, which is specific to that truck.

The fire department has no immediate plans to take any of their older trucks out of service but said eventually that is the plan. “Eventually they’ll all be retired or pensioned off,� said Smyth. “What we need with this is about a 2,500 or 3,000-gallon tanker that we’ll have to work on down the road. That’s because we have some areas in town that aren’t serviced by fire hydrants, so we need that water supply.�

The truck was bought for $105,000, and there are also some other costs for shipping to the border and going through customs.

Smyth takes some pride in the fact that the truck is paid for entirely through donations, not taxpayer dollars.

Brian’s wife Candy is part of the six-person fundraising committee, and they are continuing to raise funds, with about $35,000 still needed to cover all of the costs.

On Aug. 8, there will be an outdoor drive-in theatre at the soccer fields on the

east side of town. Gainer the Gopher will be attending the screening of We Bought A Zoo. “It’s a family event,� she said. “There will be raffle tables, auction items.

There will be games for the kids beforehand.�

There will also be some cars from Estevan Motor Speedway.

So far they’ve raised about $87,000 and are waiting for a grant to come in for $15,000. They are now selling tickets for a threemonth daily lottery draw beginning Oct. 1 until the end of December. Tickets can be purchased from any member of the fire department, the fire auxiliary, Spectra Credit Union and the town office.

The best two weeks in athletics The Olympics are back, so for the next couple of weeks we can cheer on our Canadian athletes and celebrate everyone else’s.

There are a number of reasons to get excited about the London Olympics. These Summer Games will see the competition of the first bionic man. Oscar Pistorius will be competing in the 400-metre race without legs. Who isn’t going to want to watch that guy run? He’s the bionic man.

The Atlanta Games of 1996 are the first Olympics I remember. I was nine and I remember Donovan Bailey winning gold in the 100-metre event, breaking the world and Olympic records, finishing the dash in 9.84 seconds. I was at my buddy Scott Campbell’s place. That’s significant because I don’t really remember anything from my childhood beyond little glimpses here and there, and that is one of those glimpses.

That’s the kind of impact the Olympics can have on someone.

Obviously, there are plenty of ways to groan about the Olympics nowadays.

What used to be exclusive to amateur athletes is now the playground for professionals too; they still ban women from participating in some sports; the Games are all about generating money and getting sponsorship deals now, as soda and fast food companies sponsor the Games,

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers advertising stuff that no athlete would ever put in their body; doping is rampant in the public eye, whether the athletes provide clean samples or not because it’s not just about who can get the better edge but also about which athlete has the doctor who can cover it up the best.

There was even a documentary made about IOC members taking bribes during the host city bidding process for the 2012 Games. It’s alleged the London committee offered bribes to a number of IOC members to vote in their city’s favour. Worst of all, it may be so cold in London that the female volleyballers are going to be forced to cover up. That isn’t even a joke; I saw a whole special earlier this week on what that will mean for spectators.

Despite all that, I still love the Olympics.

No matter what nationality, we can all celebrate and recognize who the fastest man in the world is or the strongest woman because once they capture gold, they truly are the best in the world.

Best in the world is a pretty exclusive club. Only one person can be the best in the world at any given time.

Every week at work, I really just try for a personal best, something not everybody wants to hear from their Olympic athletes. Don’t go for a personal best; that’s what we do everyday at work. We want to live through these athletes for the two weeks the Olympics dominate are television experience, and if we were you, we wouldn’t shoot for a personal best.

We’d go for broke and leave it all out there.

I’ve already suggested that Canada is coming away with 30 medals, a figure that led to me being laughed at by another Canadian who is clearly not as patriotic as I. Our athletes may not be as athletic as the rest of the world’s, but we have some decent shot putters and track cyclists, right?

There is also a little bit of science behind my lofty expectations and it all has to do with genetics. In 1984, Canada mopped the floor with the competition — perhaps because of a boycott from some countries — raking in 44 medals, the fourth highest that year. It’s high time those athletes’ kids become the next great generation of Canadian sport, so expect to see a lot of athletes in London sired by Canada’s best athletes from the mid-1980s.

Though success is not measured by the medal count, I like Canada’s chances.

Bigger is no longer always better Sometimes a common theme seems to pop up and take over at times in terms of writing a column on a sector for some 20-plus years, and this month it seems to be the changing view of the optimum size of cattle.

The Yorkton summer fair a couple of weeks ago brought the moderation in the size of beef cattle into focus for me.

It was following the fair that I wrote about how show judges at the exhibition were not automatically looking at the biggest animal in the show ring for the red ribbon.

It was at the Regional 4-H Beef Show at the exhibition, Judge Gerry Bertholet talked about moderate frames, and in heifer classes, big females were not always class winners over more moderate-sized ones.

And the Saskatchewan Angus Gold show judge Garner Deobold remarked in an interview with this writer about how big might have been the key to winning a decade ago, but it was no longer automatic.

He said while small cattle don’t have the efficiencies needed by the industry, and suggested in some situations big can work, moderation is where the industry is now focused.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist However, at times there has been a disconnect between what judges look for in the show ring, and what works best on the farm.

In this case that may well be why this recent trend is rather interesting because ranchers seem to have already come to the conclusion that a more moderate-sized cow may well be the more profitable.

Ivan Olynyk, for one, is a producer who thinks smaller is better.

Olynyk used to run purebred red Angus and while he sold out his herd a few years ago, he did not stay out of the business, purchasing a few cows to run on a quarter section of grass he has divided into small grass cells allowing for rotational grazing.

Olynyk said he believes the trend toward bigger cows and calves was made because there was cheap barley through the years to feed them. That is no longer

the case, and as cereal crops have risen in value, with a likelihood they will stay higher than in the past, cattlemen have to turn back to grass.

With an eye to maximizing grass, Olynyk said he had always been interested in seeing just how efficient a pasture could be by utilizing rotational grazing, and this was the reason he fenced 30 paddocks on the quarter section.

Olynyk next went looking for some smaller framed cows, ones he thought might fit better into a low maintenance system. He settled on some belted-Galloway, weighing it at about 1,000-pounds.

“The Galloway go out and graze a couple of hours, then sit down and ruminate,” he said. “The big cows (from the stockyards) have to graze longer.”

The smaller cows will not produce the same calf of larger cows, but Olynyk said gross dollars are not the key to profitability.

“It’s not how much you get in town at the end, but how much it cost to get there,” he said.

And that, of course, is the key. Controlling input costs and maximizing returns is where grass and smaller cows can shine.

The Bachelorette Canada *Spoilers. Don’t read if you haven’t seen the end of this season’s The Bachelorette.

I used to hate everything about The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

Without ever watching the show, I judged it to be stupid, demeaning and probably as scripted as Keeping Up With the Kardashians, though with better actors.

Then I accidentally sat down and watched an early episode of this

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me season’s The Bachelorette, and I have to say, wow. It is every bit as vapid, as annoying and as fake as I predicted, but what I didn’t see coming was the pure

awesomeness hidden on the show.

I’m not interested in what goes on on-screen.

It’s great when the guys cry or Emily has a meltdown or

someone mocks her child, but it’s what we don’t see that I enjoy the most. I like to imagine what is going through the heads of each contestant, and most importantly, Emily, while the competition is going on.

My favourites are the guys who are clearly there for the game. They want to see how far they can get into Emily’s heart and how far they can get into the competition. These are the competitive guys who want to win more than they want a wife.

They’re heartless, ruthless and sometimes, very convincing actors. I really like them.

With this is mind, if I went on The Bachelor, I would definitely be the girl that the audience hates passionately. Not to say I’m mean-spirited, against love or anything like that. I just think some of the contestants get too wrapped up in finding the right person; they forget that they’re on a freakin’ reality TV show. This isn’t real life. You aren’t going to stay together. Might as well really live it up.

So I think “The Bachelor: Survivor Style” would be a lot of fun. I’d be the one in there making al-

liances, sabotaging the front-runners and being sweet as pie to the man whose affections I was trying to win. When the other girls ratted me out for being spiteful and mean, it would be too late! He’d be so far in love that he’d believe my puppy-dog eyes and fake tears.

Victory! Romantic TV proposal! Tabloid covers for months!

Just kidding. While I would mess with the other contestants, I’m not quite vicious enough to purposely break some poor guy’s heart. If he didn’t kick me off the show before the final set of rose ceremonies, I’d confess my wicked ways and excuse myself. Nothing like showing a little emotion, a little conscience and exiting on a positive note.

If I was the bachelorette, I’d play it a bit different. All those cruel punishments that Emily submitted the guys to this season, like meeting her friends or playing with kids, or choosing the loser of competitions for oneon-one dates, I’d totally be doing that, only at a higher level. Meet kids?

and I’m not going to point her out, so you’d better be careful! I’d also introduce them to friends that I don’t actually like, just to see if they would be polite and attentive to the crazies I’ve known and tried to defriend throughout my life.

In the end, I’d probably have the winner picked from day one, just like Emily has had a thing for Arie since their first date. You just have something with some people, and despite having to go through months of meeting and being interested in other guys, there’s still going to be the one who first caught your attention.

By the way, I know that Emily chooses Jeff.

I haven’t had time to see the end of the season, but I do know this. And having not seen the season finale, I still maintain that she has a thing for Arie.

Would you eat edible packaging?

The good people in marketing have been warming us all up for this one since they started making bowls out of bread.

Bowls have been edible for some time now, and it was only a matter of time before other packaging would be manufactured for the purpose of consumption. The idea is that if people are eating their coffee cups, there is no garbage, and no garbage is a good thing.

The biggest concern when it comes to edible packaging is exactly how edible these containers will be. Apparently the packaging is made from the same kinds of polymers used to cover pills, but companies have been known to introduce all kinds of crazy chemicals into our foods and maybe our packaging.

Some popular sports drinks include ingredients like petroleum. Do we trust our drink cups to be freer of toxins than what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re actually drinking? Will the contents of the package be subject to a nutritional facts sheet?

And these edible package manufacturers want to take things a few steps further than just soup bowls, coffee cups and freezie packages. They see all packaging being edible as the only way to make the process of delivering a product to a consumer sustainable.

Go buy four sleeves of golf balls, and come back with a snack for the round.

Wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that be a great thing to do to your buddy on the first tee? Crack open a sleeve of balls, throw them in you bag and then start devouring the empty sleeve.

You could buy a new shirt, and then remove the tag and put it on your sandwich.

We are incredibly frivolous with our resources, and I would love to reduce the amount of waste we create. The edible packaging solution does have its limitations, however. People can probably wrap their heads around coffee cups and dissolvable drink powder shells, but when it comes to chowing down on a parcel that came in the mail, we may all have to draw a line. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Jordan Baker

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really grossed out by this idea. I like to throw away packaging. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t buy foods so I can eat the wrap it comes in, even bananas, which arguably have edible packaging naturally. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just gross.

For some reason, the idea of eating the packaging of food makes me think of Babybel cheese. I love these circular cheeses. They are adorable and delicious. But I never want to eat the weird, red packaging that surrounds their

cheesy goodness.

My main issue with eating packaging comes from my dislike for germs. It seems disgusting to eat the wrapper of something that has sat on a store shelf and been handled by dozens of people on its way into my dinner. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like pealing the skin off an apple and passing it around to a group of strangers before finally eating it.

Gross. No thanks.

If the packaging is durable enough to survive shelf time in a grocery store, why would I want to put that in my body? Doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sound very healthy to me.

The only reason I can find to eat the packaging of food is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll stay out of landfills, and over-flowed landfills are undoubtably a problem.

The Roche Percee Trail Ride and Wagon Trek is back in 2012, after an absence in 2011, as the hooves are set to hit the trail on Aug. 10 for the start of the three-day event.

Wagon trek sends riders back to trails For equine lovers, the summer will once again be complete when they get back on the trails at Roche Percee.

The Roche Percee Trail Ride and Wagon Trek is back on in 2012 following devastating floods last year that led to the cancellation of this event and many others, along with destroying much of the village where this trail ride begins.

Mary Jacobs is one of the organizers of the trail ride and noted that they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to host the ride last year after the flooding had subsided. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do anything last year, there was just too much flooding,â&#x20AC;? said Jacobs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The building that the meals were supplied in was unusable, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apparently still not usable, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to barbecue stuff.â&#x20AC;?

After established events have a year off it can sometimes be difficult to get them running again. With the break however, she said that they are keen to get everybody together and back out on the trails. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are (eager) because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fun time,â&#x20AC;? she added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even with all of the work that it takes. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go on the ride myself, but I go down and help out.â&#x20AC;?

Jacobs has spoken to a number of registrants, and they are just as eager to get back on the trails after a long, two-year wait. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They seem to be (excited). I know weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had phone calls and e-mails from Moosomin, Manitoba and Saskatoon, so I think people are looking forward to it.â&#x20AC;?

She hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t yet heard about what shape the trails are in, but said they have had people map them out. The organizers just havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had a meeting yet to hear what plans there are for the trails.

Health organizations call for asbestos ban National MONTREAL - More than 150 international and Canadian public health organizations and individual scientists are demanding a worldwide ban on the mining, export and use of asbestos.

The demand on Tuesday comes after last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s announcement by the Quebec government it would lend $58 million to help reopen the Jeffrey Mine in the town of Asbestos. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The science is clear that all forms of asbestos cause ill health and premature death,â&#x20AC;? said Colin Soskolne, a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta and one of those demanding the ban. â&#x20AC;&#x153;According to the World Health Organization, over 107,000 people die each year from working with asbestos of any type,â&#x20AC;? added Soskolne, a former president of the Canadian Society of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

But Serge Boislard, president of the Mouvement pro chrysotile, said thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the whole picture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everyone knows that chrysotile, like all other forms of asbestos, is carcinogenic,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is not addressed is the levels of danger. Democrats and Republicans showing voters their differences over taxing the well-off while accusing each other of threatening to shove the government over a fiscal cliff.

Senators planned to vote Wednesday on a $250 billion Democratic bill that would extend expiring tax cuts next year for all but the highest earners. Democrats will need 60 votes to advance the proposal, which they do not have.

It seemed unlikely that senators also would vote on a rival GOP plan that includes the best-off Americans in the tax reductions, a measure that was destined to lose.

Canadian coach guides Tigerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comeback Statues are built for some coaches. Some have had stadiums named after them. A handful have been honoured with Hall of Fame selections. But generally, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sad but true: coaches are hired to be fired.

Coaches are generally necessary, but unimportant components of successful teams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have done it without the playersâ&#x20AC;? is a familiar joke among coaches who know that good players tend to make ordinary coaches good and good coaches great.

Undoubtedly the sports coach with the highest profile in North America today is not in the NFL, NHL, NBA or Major League Baseball. The coach faced with the glare of the brightest spotlight in sports today is a Canadian who steers the swing of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most famous golfer, Tiger Woods.

His name is Sean Foley, a Torontonian who uses some unique golf ideas and some unusual philosophical approaches to steer his stable of golfers, which also includes Hunter Mahan

Coaching Woods is not easy. Foley has gone from the equivalent of behind the scenes on golf ranges to Hollywood, where Tigerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s every swing tweak is analyzed, dissected and discussed by the golf industry. If Tiger plays well, Foley is a genius.

If things go bad in Tigerland, the tabloids may be calling for his head.

Oddly, Foley attended Tennessee State, a predominately black college, on a golf scholarship, but he always felt more comfortable on the range, working on his game and others, than on

His instruction dream led to a job at Glen Abbey, near Toronto, and he started helping Canadian Stephen Ames on the range one day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;... Ames told golfworld.com Through Ames, Foley got to the inside of the PGA Tour and while Woods was going through coaches Butch Harmon and Hank Haney, he was on his way to reaching the low point in his golf career. Now that Foley has helped Woods get back on his game, the Canadian is getting much of the credit for

the resurgence. Summer fun with seashore shells Hunting for treasures at low tide along a favorite beach is one of lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simple pleasures for tots, teens and adults alike. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so much to see, smell and discover in natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s giant sandbox -scampering crabs, colorful seaweed, seagulls, jellyfish (they may sting you!) and all those shells. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re lucky, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find lots and lots of

shells to hand pick and bring back home for a lasting souvenir of the day.

Here are some simple lessons and activities that you can do with your young kids and grandkids when you get home. For those who arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hitting one of the coasts this summer, look for bags or baskets full of shells at neighborhood tag sales and thrift stores. Some specialty toy and craft stores sell them, too.

CLEAN If you have just collected shells at a beach, wash them in a bucket with mild detergent and set them out in the sun on a towel to dry. Use old

toothbrushes to scrub the sand out of crevices.

Let school-age kids try a science experiment with broken pieces. Place a piece in a jar and cover the piece with vinegar. Set overnight.

Did it disappear? Explain that shells are composed of calcium carbonate. The acid in the vinegar dissolves the compound.

EXAMINE Sort them by type in piles, and find their names online or in a field guide.

Challenge your preschooler to arrange the shells from each pile in rows from largest to smallest.

Riders take eyes off ball, suffer consequences â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just took my eyes off the ball.â&#x20AC;? - Weston Dressler, July 20, 2012 He was speaking about himself, but he might as well have been speaking for the entire team. The Saskatchewan Roughriders took their eye off the ball in Week 4.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re speaking about the Ridersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 41-38 overtime loss in Calgary last Thursday that sent Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team to its first defeat of the season.

In a fabulous football game on an unmatched summer evening in one of the CFLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest cit-

ies, there were five lead changes in the first half before the Riders pulled away in the second. With half a quarter to go in the fourth, however, the Riders took their eye off the ball.

Up 17 points, they seemed to put it into cruise control and allowed the proud Stampeders to crawl their way back into the game.

Even as it was slipping away, from the broadcast booth, I never felt for one second like Saskatchewan would let this one get away. In case you missed it, the Riders even had a last-minute drive with the

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider game tied 35-35. However, a deep pass from Darian Durant well into Calgary territory went right through the hands of the Ridersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; most sure-handed receiver, Weston Dressler.

But he was far from the only culprit in this one.

Calgary, of course,

won it in overtime on a Nik Lewis touchdown, while the Riders could only muster a 50-yard Chris Milo field goal.

Both Rider coach Corey Chamblin and team president Jim Hopson were seething after the game but kept their thoughts to them-

selves. Chamblin stared straight ahead and gnawed on his lip while answering reportersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; questions. However, no one would assign blame or point fingers.

They may have had some private thoughts on whom to blame, and it was likely discussed behind closed doors, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never know.

That will buy them both some serious equity within the locker room.

Chamblin simply said there are no excuses for the loss, and that it will not happen again.

2 cloves garlic, chopped 3 jalapeno peppers or to taste, seeded and chopped 1 tablespoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons mild chili powder 1 cup tomato sauce or puree 2 teaspoons stevia, agave syrup or honey 4 cups seeded watermelon, diced, divided 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1. Mitchell, known for being a gentle giant off the field and an ultra-competitive one on it, has formally appealed the punishment he received for hyperextending the arm of Edmonton offensive lineman Simeon Rottier during a 27-14 loss to the Eskimos on Friday night.

Well, this delicious pie is quite a way to punctuate any menu. Be prepared to receive compliments and even share the recipe.

2 (4-serving) packages sugar-free instant white chocolate pudding

1 1/3 cups nonfat dry milk powder 2 cups water 3/4 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping 1 1/2 teaspoons coconut extract 6 (2 1/2-inch) chocolate graham crackers 1 (6-ounce) purchased chocolate piecrust 2 tablespoons flaked coconut 1. In a large bowl, combine dry pudding mixes, dry milk powder and water. Mix well using a wire whisk. Blend in whipped topping and

coconut extract. Coarsely crush 5 graham crackers.

Fold in cracker crumbs.

2. Spread mixture evenly into piecrust. Crush remaining 2 graham crackers into fine crumbs.

Viruses not the only cause of hepatitis DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past year, my wife has had to deal with autoimmune hepatitis.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something that hardly anyone knows about or understands, and that makes it even more difficult to cope with. Everyone thinks she has an infection. I can only haltingly explain what she has. Will you tell your readers about this illness?

-- D.R. ANSWER: Say â&#x20AC;&#x153;hepatitis,â&#x20AC;? and people automatically think of a viral infection. Say â&#x20AC;&#x153;cirrhosis,â&#x20AC;? which is sometimes the last stage of hepatitis, and people think of alcohol as the cause. Not all hepatitis is virus-caused, and not all cirrhosis is alcoholcaused. Your wifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s illness is an example. Her liver is inflamed (hepatitis), not from an infection but from an attack on her liver by her immune system.

The reason why a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immune system, a system designed to keep us healthy, turns on the

liver is obscure. Signs that the immune system is the cause are demonstrable by finding antibodies in the blood. Antibodies are the ammunition the immune system makes to fend off dangerous invaders. One special antibody, the antinuclear antibody, is a big indication that the liver has come under an immune attack.

The course of autoimmune hepatitis is unpredictable. It might be mild with few symptoms, or it may take a more aggressive course in which the skin and eye whites turn yellow, where fatigue is immobilizing, where abdominal pain is common and where the skin develops an itch.

Quite often, a liver biopsy is the procedure that provides evidence of autoimmune hepatitis.

Prednisone, one of the cortisone drugs, often is the treatment of choice. It reins in an out-of-control immune system. Another immune-modifying drug, azathioprine, can be added

to the regimen. It sounds like your wife is responding well to treatment (from parts of your letter that I had to delete).

The booklet on hepatitis details the various forms of the illness, and how they are acquired and treated.
