RM approves new work camp The RM of Estevan approved the development of a work camp during the latest meeting of council Sept. 19. The work camp had been previously proposed to council at the last meeting but denied because council requested that the developers address some issues involving road access, security and waste removal. The work camp, to be located in the Shand Road Industrial District, is a go now that the developers have met council’s concerns. Council also received an update on the progress made by the road crew that is repairing a number of road issues. Some extra hands were recently

Showcase shows no sign of slowing The Showcase Business Expo is back for another weekend full of something for everyone. This is the first year the event will be hosted in Spectra Place. While the facility is an excellent one, the change of venue is not without its share of problems. Dennis Moore, who heads the advertising for the expo, said it’s been a tough sell this year for some businesses who have trouble finding the people to man the booths, but that’s been a small drawback. “People are as excited this year as the first time they were here, he said. Fellow organizer Art Beselt said that moving into a new facility can be difficult because they aren’t quite sure what problems they may encounter.
“Hopefully we can meet those (challenges), he said. “We’ll try to get feedback from the exhibitors about Spectra Place. Once construction was complete on the new building a couple of months ago, the organizers were finally able to get inside and really see what they would be dealing with. The total exhibitors is in the 80s, including a number of nonprofits, but the difficulties in setting up booths will be the sunken ice level. Beselt noted there is only one elevator and back entrance that everyone will need to use to bring in their goods. In previous years, the event was held at the Lignite Miners Centre on a ground-level floor. There was space for three or four people to unload before, and that space has been reduced.
Moore said the organizers just have to be very organized come set-up time. “Most (of the exhibitors) go to several of these shows a year. They know what’s going, he added. While the majority of the exhibitors will be stationed inside Spectra Place, there are plans for a few vendors to be set up outside. Despite some new difficulties, the new venue does have some potential going forward. Beselt said the event could handle anywhere from 120 to 150 total exhibitors if they set up not only over the ice surface but also on the walking track around the facility’s perimeter. Local businesses will feature at the expo, but more than half of the booths will
be showcasing businesses from outside the area and roughly 20 per cent will be for businesses who haven’t been to Showcase before. Beselt said Showcase is going to be competing this year with the Roughriders’ game but noted the organizers will set up a screen to show the game and the screens on the centre ice scoreboard are supposed to be showing the game as well on Saturday. “That’s one advantage, he said of the new facility. Moore added, “It’s a good facility, like nothing else in this part of the country. Showcase begins today and runs through the weekend.

Travel budgets mysteriously ballooning Public travel spending is once again under scrutiny. This time it’s General Walter Natynczyk, the country’s Chief of Defence Staff. The general racked up about $1 million of travel on the public dime. If he’s going to a ceremony at the Grey Cup, where troops are being honoured, I am not against him being there. It’s part of his job, so I have no problem paying for his travel costs. There is no reason he should not be flying on a commercial airline. It’s $800 for a flight within Canada to get to the Grey Cup, wherever it is. He lovingly spent $200,000. I wrote a column in June about Prime Minister Harper’s personal trip to a hockey game. It was public spending, and it has no place in the personal lives of public servants. This military guy looks like a politician. I tend to expect more of those who serve our country through defence than I do politicians. This guy Natynczyk certainly doesn’t represent the majority of our servicemen and women, but he is giving every single one of them a bad name. Harper said the general will have to follow the lead he set by reimbursing the Canadian public with the commercial cost of the flight. This just really bothers me.
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers It’s not even just about the money. The general chartered the government wings to catch up to his family in the Caribbean because he missed his flight. The commercial value of the flight is $1,232 from Pearson International, which Harper has assured us the general will repay. The cost to the taxpayer for this misuse of government equipment exceeds $90,000. That’s less than a penny for every Canadian. We can afford it. Apparently, Natnyczyk had to go on the vacation, there was no other option but to use the private jet for $92,950. It’s OK because he’ll put $1,000 back into the treasury. This feels so entitled that instead of waiting until the next day to board a flight is not an option. Calling the vacation off because some things just don’t work out like we want them to is not an option. The only option is to use $90,000 of taxpayer money to catch up with the family on a
beach. The Mercury doesn’t have a company car. But I imagine that if we did, and I used it to get to a family vacation, because I missed the bus, and ran up a $900 gas bill, my boss wouldn’t just ask for the $12 it would have cost to take the bus. Were I to suggest that, I could expect to be fired. I’m not usually one to scream doom about Canada’s debt. But when top government officials are spending up to 250 times what is necessary for travel, it makes me wonder if our government spending is truly running rampant, or if balancing the books is a matter of eliminating greed and corruption in the public sector. The public service just needs to be accountable. There is such sincerity behind Harper’s explanation that the “commercial” costs will be repaid. That just doesn’t do it for me. Maybe I’m just an idiot, and I need a more detailed explanation as to how paying taxpayers back a fraction of these travel costs makes good fiscal sense and sound public policy. This is the second and will be the last column I write on exorbitant travel costs the public is expected to pay. These mind-boggling expenses are now par for the course.
Only time remains for Wheat Board What is likely a surprise to no one who has seriously followed the ongoing soap opera of the future of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB), the majority of farmers don’t appear to want the change the Conservative government is bent on making happen. The CWB recently released the results of a producers’ plebiscite vote it conducted, something the Conservatives refused to undertake, because frankly they knew the results would not be favourable of their position on the issue. Results from the farmer vote saw 22,764 Western Canadian wheat growers, or 62 per cent of those who voted, preferring to maintain single-desk marketing for wheat, compared to 38 per cent, or 14,059 respondents, who would prefer to sell their own wheat in an open market. For barley, the vote was closer, with about 51 per cent of respondents, or roughly 6,300 barley growers wanting to sell food and malting barley through the single desk, compared to 49 per cent, or 6,014 respondents, who would prefer to sell into an open market. Approximately 68,000 ballots were distributed to farmers with a voter turnout
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist of about 56 per cent. While that may not sound like a huge turnout, it is important to consider the Conservatives are ruling with a majority government based on 61.1 per cent of eligible voters casting votes in the last election, and in 2008 it was 58.8 per cent. Add in the fact a number of farmers have likely tuned out the debate assuming that change is inevitable regardless of their votes, and the turnout is a significant one. And, it does appear the vote of farmers is being dismissed by the Conservative government, which has to come as a surprise to no one. Gerry Ritz, the federal minister of agriculture, was quick to state the plebiscite will not sway the Conservatives who will go ahead with plans to eliminate the board’s single-desk marketing structure
as of August 2012. It is anticipated that legislation to eliminate the single-desk selling of the CWB will be introduced this fall. There is a chance a voluntary CWB could arise from the ashes, where farmers can choose between pooling their grain or selling directly into an open market, although with key markets poached, the idea of pooled marketing would be hard pressed to work. While it is important at times government lead, there are times they need to pause and consider if their vision serves the majority. In this case it is unlikely the majority share the Conservative viewpoint. History will ultimately determine which side was right. Some I have talked to see a change as the way to prosperity, and for some it may be. For all though, it is unlikely. Other farmers see change as handing farmer dollars to big grain companies. We will see. The bottom line is, either way, the change will be a benchmark of change for Western Canadian wheat and barley growers.

A couple of concerns Being back at school means I’m often powering through the hallways trying to get to class on time. This also means I have all kinds of time to observe other students and ponder their lives at some length. Sometimes this leads to awkward levels of staring on my part, or as I described it Monday, “Sometimes I weirdly make weird eye contact with my subject and we both are forced to acknowledge the weirdness of the moment. It’s weird.” Entering the second full week of class, I’ve developed several questions: 1) How does one become the type of person who can rock a full head of hot pink hair? I’ve experimented with a fair few hair colours myself, but they’ve all been varying shades of conservative. In no way can I relate to the girl on my block with pink hair. Every time I see her, I make up all kinds of cool traits that she must have that I do not. She probably can juggle fire, and fit her entire fist in her mouth. She’s also probably one of those people who can walk into a thrift store and magically come out with something designer and vintage, and then wear that item with superb confidence. Seriously, I think confidence is the major characteristic. She’s trying to be different, and is totally making it work. I’m so jealous. 2) Why do couples still think it’s cool to make out in hallways? I was walking to class (not even late!) behind a couple holding
Tonaya Marr
you know, smoking into hazardly placed couples. That’s a real danger. They’re everywhere. 4) When is it OK to correct your teacher? I know, this definitely ties in with the “don’t think you’re smarter than your prof” advice I wrote about at the end of summer. I’m not being a hypocrite, but sometimes, rarely, professors get things wrong. And while I may admire Hermione Granger for her wit and heroics, I’m well aware that people aren’t lining up to eat at her lunch table (metaphorically, of course. Gryffindors all eat at the same table.) It’s not really cool to be the know-it-all brat who sits in the front row and lets the instructors know when they screw up. Is this ever OK to be this person and still have friends? Like I said, it’s only my second real week of classes and there are lots more observations to come. If you have answers to these questions, or even questions for me, don’t hesitate to send them to me at tonaya.marr@gmail. com. I’d include in cellphone number, but I have enough people calling me to drive them home from bars as it is. Tonaya is serious about how it’s OK to email her. She might even reply. She can also be followed at Twitter @tellemarr. Someday she will explain where the whole “Telle” part came from, but not today. And no, she isn’t just copying her sister Kendelle.
Maybe It’s Just Me hands, something I’m fine with. Hand-holding is cute, actually. Anyway, just as they’re about to walk through the doors into another building, they stop and latch their faces together, complete with some awkward head holding. Fortunately, I noticed soon enough to avoid crashing into them, and was able to social skilllessly skirt around them to continue on my way. Moral of the story: express your love/lust at home. Image the horror that would have occurred had I been texting and walking, and not dodged their embrace at the last second. It’s makes me nauseous to think about it. 3) Why do people text and walk? I actually have the answer for this one. It’s a two-part response. First, if we text and walk, we don’t have to engage with people we don’t know. That prevents awkward moments as discussed in question one. Also, texting gives us the appearance of popularity, maybe importance, and definitely is a cool way to show off a nifty cellphone. Second, wexting (because “talking” was already taken) is like a fun sport full of risks and gambles. Can I walk in a straight line and avoid all other people, or will I crash into a trash can and take a Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls type of tumble? Plus,

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2011
Don’t seek a lot of promises we don’t need In a few days the writ will be dropped and Saskatchewan voters will be heading to the polls. This is no surprise, because the Nov. 7 election was called the day after the last provincial election four years ago. As for this campaign, I hope there will be no surprises as well, at least in terms of election promises. Indeed, the party that wins should probably be the one that promises the least. That’s because
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile promises typically cost money - usually hundreds of million dollars each. With the way the global economy is heading, profligate spending should be at the bottom of the vot-
ers’ list. Not a day goes by without another headline about Greece’s ongoing economic collapse. Will the European Union step in with another bailout pack-
age? Yes. Is this throwing good money after bad, for a people who seem to care less about getting their country’s fiscal house in order? Yes. Is it dragging down the European economy, and to good measure, the world? Most likely. We haven’t heard much lately of Ireland, Portugal, and Spain and their debt crises. Suffice it to say, there’s plenty of shaky houses of cards in Europe’s economy. Italy’s not faring so hot, either.
11094DE00
And how did these countries end up on economic skid row? The way most entities do - including people - by spending more than they make. In Saskatchewan, our economy is doing incredibly well, with good to strong growth forecast - high enough to lead the provinces. This is due in large part to the fiscal restraint shown by the Romanow, Calvert and Wall governments over the last 20 years. We are within spitting distance of retiring our public debt, excluding our Crown corporation debt. If things go well, expect it to be totally gone before the next election. That disciplined debt reduction since the days of Romanow going to New York to pull our collective butts out of the fire has stood us well. Servicing debt is now but a fraction of the provincial budget, which means we can spend more on roads, doctors and nurses. If there are areas where we should expect some increases in funding, it is in these fields. Saskatchewan still has a critical shortage of healthcare professionals. Training and recruiting more is absolutely necessary, although conversely it hits us hard in the annual budget pocketbook, as health care makes its inevitable march towards 50 per cent of all provincial spending. Prince Albert needs a new bridge, right now, as well as immediate repairs to its current sole bridge across the North Saskatchewan River. Saskatoon
needs to get going on both a replacement for the Victoria Bridge and a north bridge, even before the south bridge is completed. In my opinion, most Saskatchewan highways I have travelled on in the last three years are in better shape that I have ever seen, although there are inevitable problem areas. This needs to continue, and more miles of roadway need to be improved. Twinning of Highway 11 should be wrapped up in short order, and twinning of Highway 16 east of Saskatoon should be next on the agenda. This stretch should be known as the “Potash Corridor,” home to most of our potash production from Saskatoon to the Manitoba border, and soon to be home to more mines. Beyond these simple increases, we must be wary of any pie-in-thesky election promises. The precise reason why we are not in tough times is because of an established tradition of being tight with spending combined with high commodity prices in potash, oil and wheat. We need to be cautious of another marked drop in commodity prices should a true double-dip recession take hold worldwide. Buying votes in 2011 is the last thing Saskatchewan needs. Punish anyone who says that is the way to go, perhaps by buying them a plane ticket to Greece. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian. zinchuk@sasktel.net

Could you live using, consuming and experiencing only Canadian-made goods?
He He She She
In the spirit of the blog oneyearonecanadian.ca, we are thinking about what it takes to live completely isolated in a global community. Driving cars only made in Canada, wearing clothes made in Canada and eating only food that is grown in the Great White North. That could prove difficult in February. Not only would this endeavour be way out of my price range, but it may also just not be feasible. I recall the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and the official gear of the Games. A friend of mine was a little depressed to find that even for a huge international event that we are hosting, our shirts and mitts were made in a foreign country. I asked him if he would rather pay $50 for an Olympic toque or $10. He responded, “If I know it gives you a job? $50.” He was a rich chiropractor, though. It is admirable to say that we would be willing to spend five times as much money or more if it meant a fellow Canadian had a poor-paying job they hate, and that’s what I say too. I may not be able to afford it all the time, but I am more than willing to cough up more money for relevant things. I would spend $50 on the toque, or twice as much for an organic, locally grown tomato, or multiple times higher prices for electricity created through a clean and sustainable way. No, I could not live a completely Canadian life. I’d like to think I could, but there are some little things I would either have to go without or couldn’t afford. Like a Blackberry. There aren’t a lot of Canadian companies making cell or smart phones. Not only is a Blackberry expensive, but Research in Motion is being pounded in the stock market and could be obsolete in a year. I couldn’t use my laptop, or my computer at work. I couldn’t use the cameras at work. I would have to quit my job and open one of those stores that sell only made in Canada merchandise. I will try to live Canadian, but I’m not going to get upset if my shoes were made elsewhere.

In a lot of ways, Canada is very similar to the United States. We live similar lifestyles and backgrounds, and for the most part, we’ve largely come from the same places. Plus, so much of American culture and products bleed into Canada that sometimes it can be hard to tell where one country begins and the other ends. It wasn’t until I lived in Missouri for eight months that I really learned to appreciate how unique and awesome Canada is. Canadians love other Canadians, and when we find one another in foreign places, we’re likely to bond. We’re a special breed of nice people and we live our lives pumped that we’re not Americans (huge generalization, I know). But take away my American products and I’ll lose it. First, I want to keep my iPhone. I’m pretty sure they’re made in the United States. Not cool. This is a life or death matter, actually. So no, no go. I cannot image being Darren Barefoot and trying to live on only Canadian products. I wouldn’t even want to. Nothing against Canadian products, but they’re often more expensive than those from our American counterparts, and saving those precious dollars really can add up. Imagine the horror that would occur if we no longer traded with the U.S. Pretty sure I learned in my 100-level economics class that fair trade is the best way for everyone to make money. Getting rid of American products would hurt our economy as well as the American’s, which really doesn’t need another face-punch. Of course, I’m not an economist, and I spent a lot of that class making a highly entertaining comic strip, so I could be wrong. Anyway, like I said, I want to keep my iPhone. And most of my clothing. And furniture. And some entertainment, though I really only watch MTV and listen to Canadian bands (excluding The Cab). It would just be awful. What annoys me most about Barefoot’s mission is that he’s attempting what he calls “stunt journalism.” He’s doing this entire project because he wants to make a profitable book at the end of the year. This seems like such a contrived, pathetic attempt at fame. Makes me dislike his project immediately. Plus, like I said, I’m not getting rid of my iPhone.

Fall is coming, goodbye summer Hello friends. I’m so glad to be back writing. After taking the summer off and soaking it up with my family (gathering lots of material), it’s time to get back to work. I’ve missed connecting with everyone and look forward to the coming weeks and the exchanges through this column. Sadly it’s time to say goodbye to summer. As the summer sun’s glow and warmth has softened, slowly we will start to see the signs of this wonderful season fade away. Bikes will be hung back in the garage, water hoses will be drained and rolled away, lawn mowers will be stored and we will wait months for the sweet smell of freshly cut grass to return to our senses. Soon we will hear the last sizzle of a steak on the barbecue
and the cover will go on for the final time. Everyday I see change in my backyard, as the leaves turn and change from vibrant greens into the warm, soft hues of autumn. This season is beautiful and breathtaking to watch and to experience. Autumn brings that feeling of comfort that is simply felt in the whisper of the cool, crisp air. Additionally, it brings the arrival of some of my favourite foods that truly warm the soul. I love love autumn and it is a season that makes me feel alive. Yet, I remain a summer sun girl first and foremost. As we say goodbye to summer I am reminded of the fun our family had. Like many families we throw “routine” out the window the moment the kids close the door on that last day of school. We savour our
Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life long, lazy days that turn into what seem like endless summer nights - nights that are full of laughter, firepits, roasted marshmallows, early morning swims and countless picnics. Although I will miss the freedom that summer brings (long bike rides with the wind blowing through your hair, sand in between your toes, on your beach towel and everywhere else for that matter, burnt marshmallows, late night stories around the firepit, kids crawling out of bed and stumbling into the
kitchen after a good sleep in, camping, alfresco dining, family and friends), I am excited about autumn and the opportunity to look back and process the last few months then turn towards what’s ahead and again being given the opportunity to get excited about the season before us. As I sit watching this change happen right before my eyes, I am reminded that life is forever mov-
ing; that the challenges we experience both the highs and the lows, will always be followed by something new; that like we see in nature, the seasons in our life will change, will grow and life will go on. I’m excited about what lies ahead and I hope you are too. Being the summer sun girl, I’m not saying I’m thrilled about the impending snow that will soon reach our doorsteps. Rather, I am excited for change and I embrace it today. For whatever reason, this seasonal change from summer to autumn speaks to me the most. For some, it may be the change from spring to summer, seeing new life pop up and the joy that accompanies that change. For
others it may be the quiet of winter, the solitude, reminding us that sometimes things go slower and that’s OK. Whatever the case may be, for right now, it’s time for us to say goodbye to summer and to transition into autumn. And as we watch it unfold so gracefully in nature, I hope we’re all able to do the same. From my family to yours, may this season be great and my you walk into it with confidence and strength. The prime minister is at the UN for meetings on the future of Libya and an accountability session on the signature child- and maternal-health initiative that he championed at last year’s G8 in Muskoka, Ont. Harper will meet with his NATO counterparts for discussions on how to support the National Transitional Council, now that Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi has been deposed and remains at large.

A.L. MVP? Verlander on the verge His initials might be J.V., but he’s definitely on the varsity. And after this year, Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers will probably add three other initials to the end of his name: MVP. A pitcher winning the most valuable player award? Blasphemy to many oldtime baseballers. How can a player be an MVP, they argue, when he plays only once every fifth day, spending the other four jogging in the outfield, throwing on the sidelines, snoozing in the bullpen and eating a lot of sunflower seeds. Verlander has been so dominant on the mound for the Tigers that veteran observers are using his 2011 season as a barometer to measure some of the greatest seasons of all time. He will almost certainly be a unanimous winner of the Cy Young Award as the American League’s best pitcher. As for the MVP, ask yourself this question: Where would the Tigers be this year without Verlander
on their pitching staff? The playoff-bound Tigers don’t want to think about it, but how’s this for a stat: In his last 26 starts, Verlander has a record of 222. Overall this year (through Sept. 18), he’s 24-5. Replace that outstanding record with a middle-of-the-road 11-11 pitcher, and the Tigers’ may not have coasted to the A.L. Central title, which they wrapped up mid-month. Valuable member of the team? Obviously. Most valuable in the league? Almost certainly. First baseman Miguel Cabrera, catcher Alex Avila and DH Victor Martinez are all having outstanding years at the plate, but it’s Verlander carrying the team on his shoulders. Manager Jim Leyland may rest his ace a little bit down the stretch as the Tigers prepare for the playoffs, but he’s probably good for enough starts to win 26 (not a stretch). If he does so, it would be the most victories by a pitcher in the A.L. since 1990, when Oakland’s

Bob Welch won 27. Verlander’s season to remember is not just about victories. He leads the league in strikeouts and batters are hitting just .190 against him. He has allowed only 53 walks in 244 innings, and his WHIP (walks and hits allowed per inning pitched) is a remarkable - and leaguebest - 0.91. Overall, he stars in more hitters’ nightmares than any other demon or pitcher. Oh, and one more thing: He threw his second career no-hitter this season, and came within an eyelash of a third. “Doesn’t surprise me,” Leyland told Tim Brown of Yahoosports.com “And it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets another one at some point in his career. Riders love Miller Really, can one man make this much of a difference? It’s a rhetorical question, it seems, because the results are staring us right in the face. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are 3-0 since Ken Miller replaced Greg Marshall as head coach of the team and they aren’t looking back. On Saturday at Mosaic Stadium, the Riders trailed the Toronto Argonauts for most of the game before turning it on in the fourth quarter and pulling away for a 30-20 victory. It truly is just like old times, where the Riders need an alarm clock to go off before they start playing. But eventually they always do. “I just told the men in the locker room that it was a tremendous battle,” Miller said after the game. “We wore them down in the fourth quarter. A lot of games are won in the fourth quarter and we did that today.” So what exactly is it that Miller has? Could

admitted Argo defensive lineman Ronald Flemons. “(Toronto QB) Steven Jyles was good and hopefully he’ll get better.” Perhaps this talk of Miller being a saviour is overblown or even old news but given the way the season started at 1-7, what has gone on over the past three weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. The victory over Toronto wasn’t as convincing as the back-to-back blowouts of Winnipeg, but it’s a win nonetheless. You don’t get extra points just because you won with style. And the team isn’t looking back. “We’re in about as good of a position as we can be, but we have to keep getting better,” Miller cautioned. “We can only win one game at a time.” How is this all going to turn out? I can’t wait to find out. (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on CKRM radio)
Rider Insider anyone have been expected to replace this grandfather on the sidelines as Marshall attempted to do? What’s his secret? “I love Ken Miller,” stated Rider defensive back Chris McKenzie who returned an interception 34 yards for the touchdown which put the game out of reach. “That’s all I got to say. He elevates my game. He tells me little things that I can work on and what my strengths are. I love him.” The Riders have certainly caught the league’s attention as their three game winning streak upped their record to 4-7 and they can catch B.C. for third in the West with a victory over the 5-6 Lions this Saturday at Mosaic Stadium (2:00 p.m. on TSN and CKRM). “Give Saskatchewan credit, Ken really has them playing right now,”

Provincial OTTAWA - New documents indicate Saskatchewan tried to do an end-run around rules that would prevent the province from tapping into a pot of more than $1 billion to build a new CFL stadium in Regina. The Conservatives designed the P3 Canada Fund to help pay for infrastructure projects with other governments and the private sector. Money from the fund cannot be spent on facilities “primarily” used for pro sports. The province says its Canadian Football League team would only use the venue 10 days a year. The rest of the time, the stadium would host university and high school football games, concerts, other sporting events and a few conferences. But documents obtained by The Canadian Press show the Roughriders would account for most of the facility’s annual revenue — and it is not clear how the stadium could operate without the CFL team. International ANKARA, Turkey Turkey has come up with a radical solution for tackling crowd violence at football matches — ban the men and let only women and children in. Under new rules approved by Turkey’s football association, only women and children under the age of 12 will be admitted to watch games — for free — involving teams which have been sanctioned for unruly behaviour by their fans. On Tuesday, Fenerbahce distributed about 27,000 free tickets to women and children for the club’s match against Manisaspor in Istanbul. In July, Fenerbahce was ordered to play two home matches without any spectators after its fans invaded the pitch during a friendly against Ukrainian champion Shakhtar Donetsk.

The charges were filed in court in the state of Minnesota where Byfuglien was arrested at the end of August. Court documents say police stopped a boat driven by Byfuglien because it was travelling without proper lights. Police say Byfuglien admitted to taking a muscle relaxant but couldn’t remember the name of the drug since he said he takes about 17 different supplements a day. Byfuglien is charged

Women In Candyce Bell heads Bell Medical Aesthetics Starting a new business is a daunting task for anyone. But how about starting a new business that is completely unlike any other in the community and one that most people don’t quite understand? That was the challenge that faced Estevan resident Candyce Bell when she decided to take the leap and open Bell Medical Aesthetics. A full service skin rejuvenation centre that also offers other services such as teeth whitening and hair removal, Bell Medical Aesthetics is located on Kensington Avenue. Bell said she was introduced to the field of medical aesthetics by a friend from nursing school who is one of the top medical aesthetics nurses in California. Since that introduction, her interest grew to the point where she began researching whether or not opening a business of her own was feasible. “It was about three years of intense investigation finding out what the market was, what the demand was coming from a smaller community and if there was a need here that we could service,” she said. However doing the research was only half of the equation for Bell. As a registered nurse with 10 years of experience she had to weigh not only the risks that come with opening a business but also giving up a stable, well-paying job. “There were a lot of

You had a vision and you’re doing it.’”

Women In So many victories behind us, so many challenges to come There is no denying the progress Canadian women have made in filling positions of power over the decades, whether in business or politics. During National Business Women’s Week, from October 16 to 22, let’s not lose sight of the fact that these hard-won advances remain fragile. Let’s not forget that there is still plenty of resistance to fair female representation in certain spheres of activity. Before 1918, women in Canada didn’t even have the right to vote in federal elections! Since then, they have not ceased to take huge strides in
their quest for equality in education, in personal and legal relationships, and in business. But many more challenges remain. In parliamentary representation, the numbers are low: women made up 25 percent of the windfall in the 2011 federal elections, but it that is still far from the critical mass target of 30 percent. This dismal rate puts Canada far down the list of women’s representation in world parliamentary institutions around the world. Another place where the glass ceiling continues to prevent Canadian women from achieving
their fair share of power is in boardrooms: women are notably under-represented on private sector and public boards of directors. In Canada, almost half of the boards of directors of large companies include only one woman, and only six percent include two or more. Will the increasing numbers of women registering at our universities change this situation over the next few years? Let’s hope it will, but in the meantime, we must continue to support those who already hold decisionmaking jobs or who have set their sights on them.
In Canada, almost half of the boards of directors of large companies include only one woman, and only six percent include two or more.

Women in Canada’s workforce This year, National Business Women’s Week is being observed from October 17th through to the 23rd. It’s a perfect time to consider how active women have become in Canada’s workplace and to recognize the challenges they continue to face. Statistics show there
has been a 50% increase in the number of self-employed women in Canada over the past 15 years. In fact, the number of women-owned businesses is growing at a rate that is 60% faster than those owned by men. These women are surprisingly older, too: They’re taking the time
to acquire work experience and gain a more rounded knowledge of their chosen work environments before setting out on their own. The average age of a woman who owns a business is 41. Yet, although men may experience certain challenges and difficulties within
include gender inequality and income: A woman earns, on average, $0.80 for every dollar earned by a man, which means she has to work more to earn as much as her male counterpart - even in the self employment sector. Therefore, although the Canadian workforce has
become increasingly open to women, their personal economic gains are still limited and familial obligations continue to add pressure. This important week is an ideal time to bring these issues to the forefront, promote women in business and recognize the due that is owed to them.

the work force, these same obstacles are even more complicated for women who may have to balance work and family life. Some say it’s a balancing act that can’t be done, while others insist it simply requires perseverance and good organizing skills. Cultural obstacles also

No challenge is too great for women While business women have come a long way, it wasn’t all that long ago that women were more than likely to be found working in offices, retail stores and restaurants. However, today it’s commonplace to see women rivaling men in top-ranking jobs in corporations of every kind, in banking, in elected government positions, in every single known profession and in jobs where we never even imagined we would ever see women! And let’s not forget all those self-employed women. In Canada, today,
approximately 1 in 10 women is self-employed and although they are more likely to work part-time, they are often seen at the helm of small and medium sized companies as well as major corporations. In fact, the Canadian government reports that 47% of our small and medium businesses are owned by women. You may be surprised to learn that Canadian women now comprise the majority of full-time students in most university departments. And did you know that the current Gov-
ernment has the highest percentage of women in Cabinet in Canadian history? There are 69 women in the House of Commons - the highest number ever elected. All those years of tenacity and determination have certainly paid off in paving the way for this generation of women and even more so for our daughters. From teachers, engineers, doctors and researchers, to astrophysicists and astronauts, the sky is the limit; no challenge will ever be too great for the women of tomorrow.

Businesswomen are carving themselves an important niche From September 19 to 23, we celebrate Women in Business Week. If, in 2011, women are driving the Canadian economy, this was not always the case. Many generations of women have worked very hard to assume a place that reflects their skills, their abilities, and their knowledge. Canadian women were not even considered “persons in the legal sense before 1929. Today, over 60% of women earn an income, and 80% of women decide on the purchase of products and services, for themselves and their families.
)UHVK )XQ
These women represent a major economic power whose impact is felt on a global scale. Demanding, well-informed, and very selective consumers, women are increasingly launching their own businesses. Their enterprises create employment and drive the economy. Women are also innovative in their business development decisions, as they create a new prosperity within a new generation of businesswomen concerned about exploiting feminine values, such as empathy, balance, and harmony. Generally, women go
into business to satisfy their need for fulfillment, to put their skills and abilities into practice, to be financially independent, and to engage in stimulating challenges, which gives them control over their destiny. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that the number of women heading a business has more than doubled in 15 years, while the number of men has only increased by one third during the same period. Businesswomen have created an important niche for themselves and, every day, their contribution improves the world.

Everything equal, equality for all: mission unaccomplished For decades, we’ve involved ourselves in the feminist quest for true equality, everything equal, equality for all: mission unaccomplished. Equality is still only a dream for women in many cultures. Equality still isn’t for all, even in our own culture.
Much work remains to be done as the mission is far from being accomplished! Everything equal, equality for all: mission unaccomplished. This is the theme of International Women’s Day held on March 8. If that equality is to be truly achieved, it
should contain equality in rights and deeds; equality in economics and politics; equality in society and culture. Any equality is not just a simple comparison between women and men. Equality for all, it’s also equality between the women living here, and
equality between all the women of the world. No human condition can justify the discrimination that women, throughout the world, are still victim to in 2007. No religious reason can excuse the miserable living conditions that still affect
too many women of today. All human beings are equal and have the right to respect. But while commercial exchanges between the countries are more and more fair, still and always there are women without the right to an education, justice, a healthy diet, secu-
rity, property, recreation‌ This March 8 is an opportunity to think about our struggle for equality. It’s also a moment of solidarity for those women and men who, for 10, 30, 60 years, have battled for this equality. But the mission is far from being accomplished!

Career Opportunities ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cosmic changes create a potential for disruptions in your travel plans. In the meantime, you might want to consider shifting your focus to another area of your life that needs attention. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for beauty-loving Bovines to enjoy something special for the senses. It will restore your spirit and return you to the workaday world ready for the next challenge. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) With your planetary ruler, Mercury, going retrograde, you might want to slow down the pace in pursuing some of your projects. Rushing things could be counterproductive. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Tensions begin to ease in those once-testy relationships. This helps create a more positive aspect all around. Expect to hear news that could lead you to rethink a recent decision. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The pace of activity that had slowed last week now begins to pick up. This is good news for Leos and Leonas who have career-building plans that need to be put into operation. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Venus offers encouragement to romance-seeking Virgos who are ready to get up, get out and meet more people, one of whom could be that long-sought soul mate. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An ongoing problem with a co-worker might need to be sent to arbitration. Get all your facts together so that you have a solid base from which to make your argument. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You are usually decisive about most matters. But you might want to defer your decision-making this week until you get more facts. Someone is holding out on you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) That quiet period is ending, and a new burst of activity creates some problems at the workplace. But things are soon resolved, and everything goes back
to normal. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Relationships could be either helpful or hurtful as you pursue your career goals. You might have to make some difficult choices depending on what your priorities are. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might still have some doubts about a career move that could involve a lot of travel. If so, continue to check things out until you feel secure about making a decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Love rules, as Venus continues to exercise her cosmic influence on both single and attached Pisces. New developments might cause you to change your travel plans.
