Reading the news on a daily basis and keeping up with happenings in our province and around the world is a routine that’s been engraved in my brain for a while. I wish I could say the same about reading books. I read a novel or random book every once in a while, but it’s not as frequent as my daily intake of news, magazine articles and comic books. It’s not something I’m proud of. In fact, I feel like I should be standing in a corner for my transgressions, because books are still the most engrossing story-telling experience available to us, and it not only works our imagination, but it has the potential to improve people’s writing and understanding of certain things. I just have trouble committing to a story that might end up being a stinker. There are instances where a book reveals its brilliance halfway through, and it requires one to read through segments that aren’t that compelling. If I don’t start to enjoy a book early on, I have a mighty hard time
Alex Coop
Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling going on. It’s a weak excuse, but it’s the one that rears its head the most when I try to approach books. I had classmates in college who blasted through novels on a weekly basis. I was always jealous of that. When I do get sucked into a story’s universe and characters, it’s some of the greatest fun, ever. And about a week ago, I embarked on such a journey, once again. Red Mars, written by the brilliant Kim Stanley Robinson, focuses on the early stages of colonization on Mars. It’s bursting with human drama, technological savvy and a scope so immense it can nearly leave one breathless as the journey sails
through space and explores the possibilities that await human kind on the red planet. Even if you’re not into science fiction, the additional layers of character development and world building is so fascinating it may be enough to get you hooked, as well. I’m feeling nearly all these things through another form of storytelling found in the Witcher 3, a recently released roleplaying game that let’s you assume the role of a magic-infused mercenary named Geralt of Rivia, who has to find his daughter-in-law in a fantasy world rife with monsters, corruption and death. It’s the third installment of the Witcher series developed by CD Projekt RED, and
has been well received by fans of the novels and fans of fantasy worlds in general. Interestingly enough, the games are based on the Witcher series written by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The games and books provide fans of the Witcher universe with many options when it comes to selecting a way to consume the universe created by Sapkowski. I haven’t read the books, but as I’m playing through the game, I’m fascinated by the amount of freedom at my disposal. You can explore the open-world on horse or on foot, moving seamlessly from village to village, city to city. You encounter genuinely interesting characters who are voiced superbly and have meaningful things to say. When you arrive in a village for the first time, it’s often a good idea to go to the local tavern and talk to the folks inside, who frequently have important information ranging from valuable gossip to tips on how to hunt down a mon-
ster terrorizing a nearby town. I haven’t scratched the surface, but I’m already enthralled by the experience. And yet, as I read Red Mars when I’m not playing the Witcher 3, I’m reminded why games, no matter how advanced, will never provide the same level of depth and excitement as a great book does. The level of detail in books that often describes the smallest of things with picture-perfect accuracy and clarity, is unmatched and ultimately superior to any simulation or action taking place on a screen. I will admit, the freedom of exploration I have playing an open-world game like the Witcher 3 is an advantage games have over books, but sometimes, I don’t want to stray from the path I’m on if the story being told is that good. Really good books have that ability, and if you don’t read books on a consistent basis, I don’t judge you, but it sure feels nice to pick one up occasionally and let it work its magic.
How we perceive farming Agriculture education is something often written about in this space, but it is with good reason. There is little doubt in my mind one of the greatest challenges in the years ahead for farming will be the way consumers perceive what is a safe and secure source of daily food. The old adage about perception being reality holds great merit in terms of what it takes to produce bacon, milk, eggs and wheat. An increasingly large portion of consumers, at least in North America, does not have a direct connection with an operating farm these days. That means a farm vision might well come from a remembered childhood book, which has a red hip roofed barn and a single milk cow in the yard with a few chickens. That farm has pretty much been relegated to the pages of well-worn children’s books. The other source of information can be equally as out of touch with the realities on the farm. We are certainly aware of piles of misinformation out there. People are left worrying about hormones in beef, chemicals applied to control weeds and insects in crops, and the
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist entire idea of genetically modified crops. Consumers worry, yet often cannot point to specific reasons for their concerns. It is instead a perceived feeling the above mentioned things must be bad for us. To combat the fears and misinformation we must better educate consumers. But that education cannot start when that consumer is an adult, a time when perceptions are already well-established and therefore difficult to change. The story of farming has to be taught to the young. That is not as easy as it seems as entire classrooms today will have no one who has even set foot on a farm, the teacher included. So programs such as ‘Agriculture in the Classroom’ are hugely important in setting
young students on the path to knowledge about where their food comes from, and what it requires to produce that food on a modern farm. But, books only go so far. Hands-on education takes that process to another level. There is something to be said to planting a tomato after having it explained how that plant will produce what ends up on a pizza. Or, seeing the cow from which milk comes to produce the cheese for the same pizza. I mention pizza because I was recently out at the annual ‘Pizza Farm’ program, which is held here at Yorkton. Students are taken into the field to help learn about what farmers contribute to a pizza from canola oil to basil. After learning about what farming means to something they all know, a pizza, they get to dig in the soil planting tomatoes, learning about herbs, and canola and wheat. In the fall the students will head back to the Pizza Farm to see what their efforts helped produce. It is a small thing, but one which students are likely to remember, as they gain a little better understanding of the importance of farming.

Regional parks receive over $1 million in funding The Saskatchewan Regional Parks Association (SRPA) will receive a grant of $1.023 million for the 2015-16 fiscal year from the government of Saskatchewan. In addition, the Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed a new Regional Parks Act and associated regulations that will delegate certain powers to SRPA to help them in their mandate to develop, maintain and promote Saskatchewan’s regional park system. “Regional parks showcase the Saskatchewan spirit,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said in a press release. “They are special places in our communities that thrive due to the dedi-
cation of volunteers. This grant will allow regional parks to improve the experience of their visitors and will keep Saskatchewan’s regional park system strong for many years to come.” The SRPA will distribute the grant funds to regional parks. Grants are available to a maximum of $25,000 per park, and are cost-shared up to 50 per cent of project costs. Regional park capital grants enable parks to complete important work on their facilities and infrastructure. In addition to the grant, the Government of Saskatchewan proclaimed a new Act and regulations to govern the regional parks this spring. These regulations, ac-

cording to the press release, outline a five-year agreement that will delegate certain ministerial powers to SRPA. “This grant will help regional parks to make important infrastructure improvements, allowing us to provide the best possible experience to our visitors … This partnership will help us to strengthen our regional park system and make plans for the future,” Saskatchewan Regional Parks Association President John Froese said. In 2008, the government committed $2.4 million over four years to Saskatchewan Regional Parks. This commitment was exceeded, with $3.15 million being granted over the four- year period.

Nov. 1. The commodity rate was increased last July following an extremely cold winter, which led to a rise in natural gas market prices. a delivery service rate increase. The increase is needed to address additional cost pressures related to enhanced safety and integrity programs and to continue providing reliable service to customers. The delivery service rate recommendation is for an increase of $1.75 per month to the basic monthly charge for residential customers to also be implemented Nov. 1. Even with the proposed increase, SaskEnergy’s residential customers will continue to pay the lowest delivery costs in Canada. The proposed commodity rate reduction will more than offset SaskEnergy’s application for a delivery service rate increase. “SaskEnergy has the opportunity to pass through savings to our customers by taking advantage of lower forward market prices on the commodity portion of natural gas bills,” said Doug Kelln, president and CEO of SaskEnergy. “With low natural gas prices accelerating recovery of our gas cost variance account − which built up following the harsh winter of 2013/2014 − we have flexibility to provide a lower commodity rate that continues to offer price stability and protection against higher market prices in the future.” SaskEnergy purchases its customers’ natural gas on the open market, with no mark-up or profit factored
a key factor in the application for a delivery service rate increase. “We continue to expand and build on our safety programs to meet industry standards and public expectations, but these service and program enhancements come at an added cost,” Kelln said. “For SaskEnergy, safety is a core value and we have dedicated over $40 million in 2015 and $47 million in 2016 in capital spending toward safety initiatives including distribution pipeline replacements, meter stations and service lines to customer homes. Additional dollars have also been dedicated to increased natural gas leak surveys and line locating services.” Productivity improvements and cost containment initiatives have offset a portion of increased costs. SaskEnergy will continue to look for efficiencies to offset cost pressures to ensure delivery service rates remain competitive. Corporately, from 2009 to 2014, SaskEnergy achieved $32 million in savings due to productivity and efficiency efforts, and is targeting a further $5.9 million in annual savings for 2015. Further information on the rate review process, including a full copy of both SaskEnergy applications, will be available at http:// www.saskratereview.ca

Movies of Yore - 1996 Mission Impossible:
Though the movie drew its name from the familiar television series, Tom Cruise embraced his role as Ethan Hunt and as a result, established himself as one of Hollywood’s premier super spies. Famous scenes like Hunt’s vertical computer hacking session are easily identifiable and inspired many movies after. Mission Impossible is iconic for its couple brilliant moments and the legacy it carved out for itself in the spymovie genre.

Fossil fuels to be phased out by 2100 G7 LEADERS SEND SIGNAL, ASKS WORLD TO MOVE AWAY FROM FOSSIL FUELS By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca
Leaders at the G7 summit in Kruen, Germany sent a strong message on Tuesday that will have significant implications to the province of Saskatchewan in the future. According to a press release, an increased em-
phasis will be placed on keeping fossil fuels in the ground over the next couple of decades in order to meaningfully tackle the issue of climate change by removing fossil fuels from the world’s energy generation portfolio. Details as to how this increased emphasis will be enforced were unclear, but according to German Chan-

Southeast A’s finish second in tournament By Mackenzie Hientz sports@estevanmercury.ca
The Southeast A’s bantam AA baseball team finished second in a recent tournament in Regina. In the A’s first game of the tournament on June 6, they dropped an 8-1 decision to the Regina Pacers. Zac Martens started on the mound for the A’s and held the Pacers scoreless in the first two innings. Regina scored four runs in the third inning as the A’s couldn’t overcome the deficit. Dylan Hull was the only player to score for the A’s after he reached base by taking a pitch to the head. The A’s second game of the day resulted in a 9-6 loss to Lumsden. Despite the loss, the A’s were able to get there offence rolling. Jose Reyes led the offence, going three-for-three, and scored three times. Dawson Schaff also had a good offensive game, batting two-for-three, and Burke Lyons, Callum Spearing and Hunter Perkins all went onefor-two at the plate. Pitcher Colten Schell started the game and was relieved by Schaff who faced 16 batters and only allowed two hits. Reyes closed the game in the sixth inning after the game was called due to a time limit. The following day,
they were again matched up against Lumsden in a win-or-go-home game, and finished the contest with a 2-1 victory. After Lumsden scored a run early in the game, it was a pitching duel for the rest of the contest as a run wasn’t scored until the seventh inning. In that inning that inning, Reyes bunted the ball that turned in to a homerun when he used his speed and capitalized on Lumsden’s over-throws. That hit also scored a run for the A’s victory. Martens started the game for the A’s, pitching two innings. And Hull pitched the rest of the game, allowing only two hits, with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. That win advanced the A’s to the semi-final where they defeated the Saskatoon A’s 8-7. The Southeast jumped to an early lead and led throughout most of the game. They enjoyed some timely hits from Dylan Hull who hit two over-the-fence home runs. Also, Reyes and Hunter Perkins both contributed to the offence by going threefor-three. The Southeast A’s used three pitchers throughout the game as Thomas Husband pitched the first three innings, and Schell took over in the fourth inning. Burke Lyons closed the game.

EmpOwEring FarmErS Ag in Motion brings innovation to the field All fArmers know decisions are made in the field. Imagine a place, an event, created to empower farmers by providing the information they need to make these important decisions. A place where they can see the latest equipment in action, in the field – operating in the same environment it’s made for. A place where farmers can see multiple varieties of live crop plots growing side by side in the field. This summer, such a place will exist. Introducing Ag in motion, Western Canada’s newest and only outdoor farm expo. Debuting July 21 to 23, on a half-section (320 acres) near Saskatoon, SK, it’s the only show that provides an outdoor venue for progressive farmers in Western Canada that want to see and experience the latest agricultural innovation, all in one place. Ag in motion will feature field equipment demonstrations, live crop plots and interactive exhibits such as “ride and drives” and smaller equipment demos. “Ag in motion will offer farmers a unique opportunity to compare crop plots and machinery, in action, and ultimately help them make decisions about the best products for their operations,” says Show Director Rob O’Connor. “There’s nowhere else in Western Canada where farmers can actually see multiple pieces of farm equipment in operation, take a test drive, or compare different crop varieties all in one place.”

Be
Than the rest! Marketing ideas that stand out.
What does an outdoor show look like? The Ag in motion team brings together the expertise of seasoned farm show organizers.
The Expo is operated by Glacier FarmMedia, who owns Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show, the country’s largest outdoor farm show held annually near Woodstock, Ontario. Also part of Glacier FarmMedia are Western Producer, Manitoba Co-operator, Grainews, Country Guide, Canadian Cattlemen, Alberta Farmer Express and AgDealer. The team knows what’s involved in delivering an outdoor show, and the potential such a venue provides. Now in its 22nd year, Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show delivers 750 exhibitors and 42,000 visitors each year. Most attendees come to see the newest technologies in agriculture. Its success is based on the fact that active farmers attend to do business – make decisions – and the show is dedicated solely to agricultural products, equipment and services.
Ag in motion is applying the same model and will become a must-see event by showcasing cutting-edge agricultural advancements that empower Canadian farmers to help meet their goals in producing high quality, safe food in a competitive marketplace. To learn more about how an outdoor show looks and operates, view the videos on the Ag in motion website, www.aginmotion.ca. Live Demos and Interactive Exhibits The number of Ag in motion exhibitors is growing steadily each week and includes seed and crop protection companies, field equipment and livestock handling manufacturers, financial services, nutrition, baling products, tires, fertilizers and much more.

Baseball stories to be shared at library event Baseball historian Phil S. Dixon will be a special guest of the Estevan Public Library on June 16, to reveal tales about the well-known baseball vagabond team, the Kansas City Monarchs and their unique history. The telling of the tales will begin at 6 p.m. in the
library. Most people have heard of Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige, and many have heard of the Kansas City Monarchs, but few know how connected the Monarchs were to many Saskatchewan communities. In honour of the 90th
anniversary of the Monarchs’ first World Championship in 1924, Dixon is visiting 90 cities where the Monarchs played ball and that includes Estevan. Dixon will present the Monarchs’ history with a local twist as he discusses the games the Monarchs
played in hometowns against local competition. He also talks about the history of Saskatchewan baseball players, as well as, the Monarchs’ ballgames and the games played by other African-American teams. “Phil was very enthusiastic about coming

Summer literacy gets a boost Summer literacy camps for First Nations and Métis students received $600,000 in funding from the provincial government, which will assist with the prevention of summer reading loss. “Literacy camps help students to perform at their best and offer a fun way for students to maintain their reading skills and prepare for the upcoming school year,” Education Minister Don Morgan said in a press release. This is the province’s fifth year offering the summer literacy camps, and each one takes a communitybased approach to learning by involving families and integrating local traditions and culture into the programming. To encourage them to keep reading, students also receive books to take home. This year, camps will
be hosted by the Creighton, Ile-à-la Crosse, Light of Christ, Living Sky, Northern Lights, Prairie Valley, Prince Albert Roman Catholic and Saskatchewan Rivers school divisions. Northern Lights will be hosting at least 12 camps for their students. More than 1,400 children participated in the camps in 2014, reading an average of
14 books each, according to the press release, almost three times the number needed to combat summer reading loss. This investment supports the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth’s goals to reduce the difference in graduation rates between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and to lead the country in Grade 12 graduation rates by 2020.
