DESIGNED FOR EASY ASSEMBLY

The helicopter has been designed in such a way that it allows the child to easily assemble and disassemble the toy with ease, maximising playability and enjoyment.

03 /05 OS. 2022 PORTFOLIO

PRODUCT IN-SITU

Presented here on this page are various images highlighting the possible environments in which the clockwork helicopter toy could be played with. However due to the nature of children’s toys and the portability of the helicopter can be taken anywhere with the child and can be played with on the go.

TOY STORAGE

The nature of the helicopters buildable design means that it can be both stored on any free surface such as a toy shelf or it can easily be disassembled and stored as its component pieces. This allows the user to minimise the space the toy occupies. It can then later be built again by the child.

INTEGRATED PLAY

As is the nature with all children’s toys, the helicopter does not need to be used within an aviation setting, but can be played with by the child in whatever environment best suits! Above the child is playing with the helicopter on a play mat alongside an assortment of toy cars and other vehicles.

03 /05 OS. 2022 PORTFOLIO

FINAL MODEL

3D Printed Scale Modelling

Going forward from the final design a prototype model was manufactured to determine scale as well as ease of use. This model is manufactured out of PLA. The models design promotes an efficient prototyping process. To achieve this, the components that make up the helicopter toy have been shelled with a 2mm wall. This means that there will be less material used for the print and that the print time will be reduced. The combination of both the reduced print time and material usage means that the prototyping process will have a reduced environmental impact improving sustainability.

DESIGNED FOR EASY ASSEMBLY

The 3D printed models design allows the playability of the toy to be easily tested. The component parts can easily be put together and then taken apart again after replicating the manner in which a child would interact with the actual toy. The 1:1 scale also allows for the clockwork mechanisms functionality and fitment to be tested too ensuring the toy performs to an optimal standard.

FINAL 1:1 SCALE MODEL

Going forward from the established final design, a prototype model was manufactured to determine scale as well as ease of use. This model is manufactured out of 3D printed PLA. The Main body of the kit was printed over the course of five days out of 6 separate component parts . These parts were then later adhered together using by roughening adjacent edges and using polymer glue to set them in place. The insertable tray was printed over 7h 37mins with the lid being printed over 18h 24mins as two separate components. Once all parts were glued together the main body was sanded down to remove and plastic splinters as well as to provide a more realistic smooth feel on the plastic.

The outer wrap was made by using an industrial scale colour printer to print out the sheets net onto 1.5mm paper card. It was then traced out using a scalpel and glued together at the flaps. By making a 1:1 scale model, the ergonomics of the kit and the model’s functionality can be easily tested - such as whether the tray and lit fit flushly or whether the sushi matt and chopsticks sit within comfortably.

USER INFORMATION IS KEY ^

All key information will be located on the base of the kits sleeve. The chef can cross off relevant allergen information based on what food is ordered into the kit by the customer on that day.
