Who Am I?

A globally recognised, multi-award winning student member of the Institution of Engineering Designers. I am a self driven, innovative designer who has a keen eye for geometric form - of which I will focus on profoundly within my work, complementing it with a hint of amorphous flair.

I am an inquisitive individual and a practical learner who thrives in a hands on environment. Alongside this I am able to work both independently and within a group setting due to my character traits of being a strong communicator.

My design works stems from my utilisation of the explorative and experimental design process, whereby I will go out and ask the questions that need answering in order to better my final designs - whilst simultaneously exploring the various routes that my design process could undergo.

Multikök Kitchen Aid

BRIEF:

To design a multifunctional, compact kitchen aid aimed for a conventional campervan kitchen. The product will be manufactured mainly from plastic and will aim to slim down and reduce the storage space used up by current existing kitchen products by combining them into a singular entity.

Designing a space saving piece of kitchen equipment that allows the user to easily prep any meal that they would require.

BRAND IMAGE

Aims to promote a sleek and minimalistic image to the user in focus with the name deriving from the Swedish term for kitchen.

Typical user group will be couples aged 35 -55yrs.

Online caravan interest in 2020 was 56% higher than 2019.

555,000+ moterhomes within the UK during 2022.

50+ Million nights are spent within campervans in the Uk each year.

USER FOCUSED DESIGN:

- All Side panels are uniform in size in order to neatly fit together to create that hexagonal silhouette.

- The panel’s design incorporates a pair of clips on both top and bottom to allow it to stay securely fixed to the main silhouette when not in use.

DESIGNED TO STAND OUT

The unusual silhouette of the Multikök kitchen aid means it will be an uncommon sight on the market, this coupled with the semi-translucent finish really allows it to stand out.

PRODUCT IN-SITU

The Multikök can be used in both the main household environment as well as within a campervan too as it functions as a spatially efficient kitchen unit. This allows it to be of more use to the user as its use is not limited to location.

WIND-UP RECORD PLAYER

BRIEF:

Design a portable record player which is powered through a wind-up/storage mechanism that would deliver the required power to play a six-minute audio track on vinyl via a turntable, for use by an adult with a child.

Designing a wind up record player that will be long lasting and generational whilst featuring an unobtrusive design.

RESEARCH INTO THE FIELD

BRAND IMAGE

Aims to promote a clean and warm image to the user in focus with the name deriving from the Welsh term for family.

Typical user group will be both Parents and children alike.

The global turntable market was valued at £350 Million in 2019

The first record player was the gramophone in 1887

Records will typically come in 7, 9 and 12inch vinyl disk sizes.

The body of the player is designed to be manufactured out of two steam bent 9mm plywood shells with all interior contemporary being slotted and glued in place.

The unusual steam-bent silhouette of the Teulu is certainly eye-catching and emits a warm feeling to the user as a result of its material selection choices.

USER SAFETY AND ADAPTABILITY

Due to the record player being in the vicinity of children a protective cover can be fitted to all outlet and electrical slots. This significantly reduces the risk of any injuries or harm to the child.

USER INTERACTION AND USABILITY

Records can have differing turn speeds based on their size and manufacture, because of this a dial has been fitted to easily dictate rotational speed. Volume can easily be altered too.

VINYL LONGEVITY

Vinyl records are incredibly delicate, in that the simplest scratch can ruin the disc completely. To mitigate this threat felt has been used as a protective topper on the platter.

DESIGNED TO LAST A LIFETIME

The aim of the Teulu’s design is to be generational, in that it will last a lifetime and can be conveniently be used by all ages, young and old.

CLOCKWORK TOY PROJECT

BRIEF:

To design and manufacture a working, 1:1 scale prototype model of a clockwork mechanism toy which will be injection moulded for its manufacture method. The toy should be designed in the mannerism of Duplo with its design aiming to promote a sense of gender neutrality in its appearance.

The manufacture method for the toy is injection moulding and so designing to best fit this process is crucial.

COLOUR SELECTION

Children’s toys need to be brightly coloured in order to attract the child’s attention - below are a selection of tones used by Duplo.

Typical user group will be boys and girls aged 3 -5yrs.

33% of parents said the main reason to buy toys was keeping kids busy.

Preschoolers spend 3.5h+ a day playing with friends and family.

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

KEY DESIGN ASPECTS:

For heightened fun factor for the child, certain components are designed to easily be taken apart, removed and put back together. This will also aid with motor function development too. All components are manufactured from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) with a semi-gloss surface finish.

3D Printed Scale Modelling

A prototype model was manufactured using a 3D print to determine scale as well as ease of use. This model is manufactured out of PLA. To achieve this, the components that make up the helicopter toy have been shelled with a 2mm wall. This means that there will be less material used and a reduced print time. This combination means that the prototyping process will have a reduced environmental impact improving the overall sustainability of the product.

DESIGNED FOR EASY ASSEMBLY

The playability of the toy to be easily tested as the component parts can easily be put together and taken apart. The 1:1 scale also allows for the clockwork mechanisms functionality and fitment to be tested too ensuring the toy performs to an optimal standard.

DESIGNED FOR PLAY

The helicopter is designed to allow the child to easily assemble and disassemble the toy with ease and also spin the rotors, maximising playability and enjoyment.

PRODUCT IN-SITU

The helicopters design allows it to be light weight and easily handled by the child using it. As well as this, due to the nature of children’s toys and the portability of the helicopter, it can easily be taken anywhere with the child and can be played with on the go.

PIEGARE - 1 DAY PROJECT

Outdoor Furniture

BRIEF:

To design a piece of outdoor furniture that promotes a social environment within a homely setting. The design should be manufactured using sheet metal which will be bent to shape.

CONTEXT BEHIND THE PROBLEM:

With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting the lives of us all, finding ways to promote a social environment has reached an all time high. Powered by a lack of in person social contact over recent years, people are now wanting more face to face interactions with one another.

CONCEPT SKETCHWORK

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

Product In Focus

All metal components are manufactured out of 10mm bent aluminium sheet with all holes stamped out prior to bending. All metal components are completed with a fine diameter 90 degree brushed anodised finish applied. Cushions are held onto the bench body via a series of elasticated Velcro straps that feed through the rear and lower cut outs. The cushions are made form a polyurethane foam core surrounded by 600D polyester fabric with PU coating applied to all outer surfaces to increase longevity.

The bench’s sleek bend-work allows for a seamless profile to be achieved. Alongside this the cushions feature similar curved edges to align with the silhouette of the seats.

PRODUCT IN-SITU

The products design allows for it to fit into a multitude of environments - mainly being designed to be used as an outdoor statement piece within a modern household environment, the curvaceous profile fits in seamlessly within both an angular and soft setting.

PORSCHE 911 SINGER RENDERING

As a keen fan of automotive design, I produced a multitude of renders of one of my all time favourite cars - The Porsche 911 Singer edition. A neutral white paint base was chosen to complement the contrasting black moulded components in order to allow me to easily alter and modify the lighting environment, achieving the best possible render set I could conceptualise.

DIGITAL COLLAGE

A selection of my favoured works that I have manufactured using Adobe Photoshop. The works are constructed in a collage-like style with visual aspects layered to create a final composition in a surrealist retro futurism style.

DIGITAL ARTWORK

A selection of my favoured works that I have fabricated using the tools and software available to me with Adobe Fresco. The works have been created using my tablet and are often made using oil based brushes to conceptualise a semi realistic piece layered with hints of creative flair.
