As winter approaches we’ve created the fourth edition of Seven, Newquay’s beach and lifestyle magazine to inspire you to make the most of Newquay during these next few months. Our third issue of Seven came out in May and we distributed 20,000 copies locally and within a twenty
mile radius of Newquay to encourage daytrippers, residents and staycationers to enjoy our lovely town,
and what a fantastic summer we have had! The weather was beautiful and we have had some really great events
including the Night Surf, Boardmasters, Sundowner Sessions and the Sea Level tour ensuring that we have all seen the best of those sunsets.
We want to show off all the amazing things that Newquay can offer this season so we’ve been working on
some new exciting features to ensure your winter is far from dull. One of our passions is supporting the hub of our
community – our local high street. So, we have created a feature around beautiful gift idea for Christmas, all of which you can buy in Newquay town centre. This is in conjunction with the Independents Guide that we recently created to help you navigate Newquay’s best indies. You can park in Newquay for £1 per day during winter in most car parks so there’s no better time to come and meander along the high street for some stress free Christmas shopping!
We also have an interview with the team behind the impressive Skyhawk camera, which has captured some of
Newquay’s most shared social media images this summer, plus a fantastic guide to our local hotels and some tips on the places you can get carveries and carbs after a Sunday hike around our coastline.
Finally, look out for our Christmas Events guide - available from 18th November - along with details of Newquay’s
Festive Festival and Music & Ale Festival. It’s a complete events listing for Newquay from 22nd November- 2nd January. We hope you enjoy reading this latest issue and if you have any feedback please contact the BID team at info@

Fistral Beach
Fistral Beach is the UK’s most famous beach. Since the huge international surf contests
during the ‘80’s Fistral’s involvement with surfing has endured through the decades. It’s
the number one destination for events, parties and contests, which continues today with the everpopular Boardmasters surf and music festival. As well as surfing, Fistral hosts numerous events from Thunder Cats to beach cricket to triathlons.
During the winter Fistral takes on a more mellow vibe as the summer crowds are replaced with
dog walkers, wind surfers and hardy surfers braving the Baltic waves, and it becomes once again
the community beach for the town. There’s nothing better than storm watching on a winter’s day followed by a hot chocolate in the Beach Bar to banish the winter blues!

The Huer’s Hut on Newquay’s headland is now an iconic landmark and a reminder of the pilchard trade that used to thrive in the town.
The Huer’s cry: Before the advent of modern electronics, pilchard boats were guided to the shoals by lookouts on the cliff tops. These men, known as Huers, had a distinct call: “Heva, heva”, to attract the attention of the boats and then point them to the shoals.

The stuff of childhood memories, real Cornish ice cream is a heavenly treat, a reminder for many of halcyon sunny days adventuring on the beach or splashing in the surf. Its rich creamy dreaminess is mostly down to the lush Cornish milk and cream it’s made from, and of course every Cornish ice cream maker will tell you they add their own touch of magic. Take the Parkers, another Cornish dairy farming family, who learned the tricks of the ice cream trade almost 25 years ago, when they realised they had to adapt and diversify if they were to keep their dairy farm and provide enough of a living to bring up their children. In a place like Cornwall, where the population can easily treble during summer, turning their milk into ice cream may seem like a no-brainer, but little did they know that their very own Callestick Farm Ice Cream would soon become a household name and a treat eagerly anticipated by holidaymakers year after year. These days, they are still farming; still producing the milk that goes into their ice cream, ensuring that they control the quality right through the process. You can drop by the farm to see how it’s made – and taste it for yourself, of course.

CORNISH CHOCOLATE MINT ICE CREAM
Discovering great ice cream is one of those ‘Eureka!’ moments, when suddenly you realise what you’ve been missing. If you’re still searching, try making your own with this recipe from Tom Hunter, talented head chef at Cornwall’s eco-hotel, the Scarlet, at Mawgan Porth. You won’t be disappointed. The delicate flavour of the Tregothnan chocolate mint tea is just what this recipe calls for.
For centuries, pilchards were caught in abundance all around Cornwall’s coast and the many ‘Pilchard Palaces’ were hives of industry - salting, pressing and packing the silver treasure in wooden boxes and barrels. The vast majority were shipped overseas, mainly to Italy, to be used as a tasty and nutritious way of perking up pasta, pizza and polenta. However in the 1950s the pilchard fell out of favour and by the end of the 20th century, the market had all but disappeared. Cue Nick Howell, owner of Newlyn’s Pilchard Works, who in 1998 hit upon the idea of simply dropping the word pilchard and using the more fashionable name ‘Cornish sardine’ (sardines and pilchards are in fact both the same fish). It worked - M&S took the bait and helped rekindle interest in the fresh, unsalted fish. By the following year grilled Cornish sardines were the talk of the town and appeared on fish counters, restaurant menus and barbecue griddles up and down the country, securing the future of Cornwall’s historic sardine fishery.

ICE CREAM MAKING TIPS
• Always use good quality ingredients, such as the best free range eggs you can get your hands on. This will turn your ice cream from good to exceptional! • Cook the custard over a very low heat to stop the eggs over-cooking. If it gets too hot the mixture will curdle and turn into a very expensive scrambled egg. • An ice cream machine is pretty essential. It’s very hard to get a creamy smooth finish without one. • Have your mixture very well chilled before you start to churn – it will speed up the freezing process. • When making ice cream with colourful fruits like strawberries and blackcurrants, add a little lemon juice to retain a vibrant colour.
• 750ml whole milk 1 Heat the milk, cream and tea until just simmering and leave to infuse • 750ml Cornish double cream overnight. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until the mixture starts to • 450g caster sugar go light and fluffy. • 20 free range egg yolks 2 Pass the milk mixture through a sieve to remove the tea leaves. • 15g Tregothnan chocolate 3 Warm the milk mixture and slowly pour over the eggs, stirring until it is all mint tea incorporated. • Dark chocolate chips 4 Pour back into a clean pan and cook on a low heat, stirring frequently. The mixture, known as a Crème Anglaise, or custard, is ready when it coats the back of a spoon. 5 Remove from the heat and place in an ice bath then chill in the fridge. 6 Churn, and store in the freezer – that’s if you can resist eating it straight away.

What is the best thing about running a business in Newquay? I have to say firstly the view from our offices on Mount Wise! Who wouldn’t
want to look at such an amazing coastline every day? Secondly, the variety of people and businesses we work with. We work with a great variety of Tourism and Hospitality businesses in Newquay and Cornwall and are
delighted that we have been working with most of them for many years. What’s your favorite memory of Newquay? Over the years I have so many wonderful memories but one that stands out was the Eclipse in 1999 as it was so magical. Pentire Headland was full of residents and
visitors waiting for it to go pitch black. Despite the ‘experts’’ predictions, Newquay had the most amazing view of the Eclipse. This was a once
in lifetime experience and was topped by a fantastic display by the Red Arrows in the afternoon - simply amazing.
In your opinion where are the best views in Newquay ? Sitting on the decking at the Lewinnick Lodge on a summer’s evening, with a glass
of chilled wine. It has a definite wow factor and never fails to impress visitors from ‘up country’ along with us residents.

Porth Island
Porth Island, just a short stroll from
Newquay’s town centre, is a place full of drama
and history. The island is linked to the mainland by a narrow footbridge which spans the 10m
gap and it’s an exhilarating experience to walk
across the bridge at high tide with waves crashing against the steep cliffs.
To add to the drama there’s the blowhole at
high tide and with a decent swell running the
blowhole on the northern side of the island – it’s a site to behold. As waves squeeze into a narrow cleft in the cliff they explode, sending spray far
into the sky. Your kids will love it (as long they’re not of a sensitive disposition and stay away from the edge, it’s quite slippery) you could tell them there’s a dragon down there.
The Island is home to numerous birds these
days and you can see the remnants of ramparts which formed part of an Iron Age castle and
farm as well as two early Bronze age barrows. So take a walk to the end of the island overlooking
Newquay Bay and take a minute to ponder what
life must have been like for those early settlers on this dramatic stretch of land.

So what is the Newquay Marine Group (NMG) trying

here and where it is,” says Gabi. Which in a nutshell
means everything from the endangered Giant Blenny,

so those that have taken measures to help the coastal environment- such as reduce waste and the use of disposable plastics - can be clearly recognised.
Plus there’s a programme of public events and

everyone to get out there to appreciate and celebrate the

and citizen science projects, passing the results back to organisations that can scientifically use the data.”
The group also plans to tackle the beach litter and
plastics issue, which is always a good thing, saying:
“We’ll be tackling everything from public beach cleans to working with the takeaway outlets to use biodegradable wrapping (no more polystyrene boxes!) And we’ll be working closely with the supermarkets to educate
visitors in the summer on how to dispose of their beach barbeques.”
NMG also wants to better promote local crab in the

It’s back, it’s bigger and it’s in neon – what’s not to love about the modern day satchel? Satchels have traditionally been used as school bags but this vintage style has been given a modern makeover and celebrities such as
Fearne Cotton and rita Ora have been ‘papped’ using this staple
fashion item to carry around their worldly belongings. If neon is not
your thing, you could always opt for a floral print, metallic sheen or a good old traditional brown leather number.
Whatever your choice the satchel is a ‘must’ for your winter wardrobe.

yourself and one for someone who can’t afford it. The café then holds that coffee until someone in need

recipe: Gluten-free victoria sponge By Jess Davis
ingredients: 200g ground almonds 100g gluten free self raising flour (i use Doves) 250g unrefined golden caster sugar 250g organic salted butter melted 5 large free-range eggs To decorate: 200g butter at room temperature 400g icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste Jar of good quality strawberry jam punnet of organic strawberries here’s my gluten-free twist on an English classic. Simply beat together 250g of softened butter with the caster sugar until light and fluffy with an electric whisk, or a wooden spoon if you’re feeling energetic! • gradually add the eggs one at a time, mixing in-between each addition. once all five have been added, mix in the ground almonds and sift in your flour, stirring gently until everything’s combined. • split the cake mix between two six inch round tins lined with baking paper and bake in an oven at 180 degrees for around 25-30 minutes. Test the cakes with a sharp knife and if it comes out clean it’s perfect. if not pop it back in for another 5 minutes. • While the cake layers are cooling you can make the buttercream. all you have to do is sift the icing sugar into a bowl, add the softened butter and vanilla bean paste. be patient and whisk for around 4-5 minutes until it turns pale in colour and lighter in texture. Then simply assemble! • spread one cake layer with jam and the other with buttercream and sandwich together. Decorate the top with halved strawberries and dust with icing sugar.

albert jones... A regular to music lovers in Newquay, 29-year-old Albert Jones is one of the best singer/songwriters doing the rounds in town and definitely worth checking out, in our humble opinion. Al how long have you been gigging in Newquay? For eight years on and off I reckon. Where are you from originally? Shropshire. Think ‘The Shire’ from Lord of The Rings and you’re not far off. Although my feet aren’t as hairy as Frodo’s! 42

What inspired you to become a musician? Hearing my Dad play Bert Jansch songs on the guitar and sneaking downstairs to hear them. I think I was five. What’s the best/worst thing about gigging? The best thing is when you write something that feels special and get to perform it in front of likeminded people. And the worst thing is missing out on other people’s gigs and discovering new music because I’m gigging myself. What inspires you to write songs? Anything that makes me feel something - good or

bad. For me, there has to be an underlying emotion, otherwise it just doesn’t feel right. What’s your perfect day? Fishing, surfing and a BBQ with friends before heading to the beach bar stinking of barbecue smoke. Normally that’s enough for me, unless we manage to make it to the Chy for some Rattlers, oooooooffffffff. Have you ever thought about auditioning for X Factor? I normally get asked this at gigs, but I like to write my own music and be myself. The X Factor is more of a musical production line. It’s the difference between

I prefer artists that create music made with love and care, which is a longwinded way of saying no, I haven’t. :-) So, we have to ask, do you get groupies after you at gigs? Ha, ha, no!
