The Huer’s Hut “Heva, Heva” was the cry you would have heard in the 19th century, when shoals of pilchards were spotted in Newquay Bay and boats were launched to catch them. Back then the ‘Huer’ would have spent his time up at this hut on Towan Headland, directing the boats towards the fish so they could cast their nets and bring in the catch. In more recent years, Newquay’s iconic Huer’s Hut reached a point where it needed some loving care. Aware that this hut was one of the best examples of its type in Cornwall and part of Newquay’s heritage, local resident John Goodman decided to motivate the town to ensure its upkeep. Using the knowhow of the Newquay-based Crowdfunder, he put together an appeal for the money needed to provide for its maintenance and upkeep for future generations. Raising a total of over £6000, which included support from some famous Newquay born celebrities, the fund has made enough to ensure the building is well looked after for the next six years. The Huer’s Hut is currently being restored before it is handed over from Cornwall Council to a community group of custodians. So, if you want to see part of Cornwall’s fishing history and a major part of Newquay’s legacy, why not meander along the headland and check out the Huer’s Hut? You could even see if you could spot shoals of fish in the bay and imagine the Huer’s cry of “Heva, Heva”.

LOOKING BACK... NO NEED TO “MULL-ET” OVER – IT WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST FISH FESTIVALS YET!

The 12th and much-loved Fish Festival saw

hundreds of seafood lovers flock to Newquay’s Harbour in September, to see an array of top chefs – including James Nathan – create culinary delights before a live audience of hungry festival goers. Events such as the Lobster Pot Race, Swamp Circus’s The Wave, and performances from the Fishwives Choir, kept visitors entertained throughout the weekend. As always, Phil’s Fish and Chip Ball was a highlight for many, with an evening of live music and posh fish and chips courtesy of Truscotts.

BOARDMASTERS 1: BERTHA 0

In arguably the best Boardmasters to date, thousands of visitors headed to Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay in August, to watch pro surf competitions and some of the biggest music acts ever to perform in Newquay. Snoop Dogg stole the show at the Watergate music festival, whilst Jock Barnes took the Men’s Open trophy, Keshia Eyre won the Women’s Open, and Newquay’s very own Ben Skinner (aka Skindog) surfed to victory in the Longboard Pro. Hurricane Bertha may have made an unwanted appearance on Sunday causing the organisers to make the unfortunate but safest decision to cancel the Watergate event, but it just means there’s more to look forward to next year. We can’t wait to see you there!

A TEMPEST IN TOWN

In July, Miracle Theatre performed their latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s

The Tempest. Brought to town by Barefeet Promotions, The Tempest combined an entertaining performance with the stunning backdrop of Fistral and the beauty of the Headland Hotel. The spectacular show was topped of when a group of dolphins were spotted swimming off Fistral beach… what a fantastic Newquay experience!

INTERNATIONAL SURF FILM FESTIVAL

Newquay’s Lighthouse Cinema hosted the first annual Approaching Lines Festival presented by Reef. Brought to Cornwall’s surfing heartlands, this was a stellar three-day celebration of the very best in international waveriding culture. Newquay’s cinema was packed to the rafters for the sell-out screenings of international premieres, multi award-winning features and exclusive audiences with the stars of surf and screen. The International Approaching Lines Festival will return in 2015 and is a must for anyone of a saltwater persuasion!

All in all, Newquay presents a wealth of property opportunity, whether it be a one-bedroom starter home, a Victorian town house, or a bespoke build cliff-top plot upon which to construct your very own ‘Grand Design’. With lending levels on the increase and interest rates remaining at an all-time low, now is a good time to take a look at what Newquay has to offer BRADLEY START’S TOP TIPS FOR BUYING A HOLIDAY HOME: 1. Location. With fierce competition to fill as many weeks as possible, go for a property with a sea view if you can afford it. 2. Big is not always beautiful. 3. Parking. If you are considering a flat, try and buy one with at least one ‘designated’ space. Outside space, or a balcony, is also a welcome bonus. 4. Spend a little extra on the furniture and fittings to set you apart from the competition, seek advice from those who you will be instructing to let it, and think about what you would want if you were a paying guest. 5. Storage. Think about where you can lock your personal belongings away safely, making your stays more convenient. 6. Take a look at holiday let websites and examine the seasonal availability. 7. If it is leasehold, be sure to check with the agent that the lease permits holiday letting.

WATERSHED S U R F

S H O P

Watershed is the new kid on the block for surf shops in Newquay, selling fresh and small labels like Deus, Obey and The Quiet Life. The creative force behind the store are duo Jake Patterson and James Wright, and since they set it up in 2011 it’s become the go-to place for cool surfers and hipsters. Seven had a chat with ‘The Makers of Fun’, James Wright and Jake Patterson.

10/10/2014 09:56

We love the inspiration behind Watershed, how did it come about? Having been made redundant from a UK watersports brand, we identified a gap in the surf market for a more imaginative store with a style and feel that we could directly relate to. From there Watershed organically formed into the store and the brand that it is today. How would you describe Watershed? Watershed are suppliers of the finest watercraft, clothing and accessories. Makers of Fun. What have been the challenges? Starting any business is a challenge. We’re self-funded and it often becomes easy to dream bigger than we can afford (at the moment). Hidden costs and very real world obligations will always be a challenge. You just have to adapt and rise to them. What’s your favourite item/brand/thing you’ve created in the store since it opened? We’d have to say our range of surfboards. We didn’t initially set out to shape boards, but demand led to custom-designed surfboards

We're working very hard on our website at the moment, looking ahead to the dark, cold months,

that are becoming a large part of the business. We are both very happy that we’ve been able to enter this part of the industry in such a big way. How’s the reaction from locals and visitors been to the store? Very positive. We’re always encouraged by feedback from our customers. It means a lot to hear that people like what we’re doing. After all we’re just doing it our way. If people like that, it’s great! What’s it like working and living in Newquay? Living and working by the sea is incredible. We draw direct inspiration from the sea and the surf. Of course surfing adds a lot of extra stoke! www.watershedshop.co.uk

hy not take a walk on the wild side and unleash your inner Doctor Doolittle at Newquay Zoo? Emma Mitchell and Nick Jones, of Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, got up-close and personal with the zoo animals when they went to feed the lemurs.

Nick described the amazing experience: “I must admit I entered into the enclosure with a feeling of trepidation as I have never done anything like this before. When I sat down I was stunned as the lemurs shot towards us with amazing agility, landing straight on our laps or jumping through the air onto our shoulders”. Emma said: “The first thing that I noticed was how incredibly gentle the Lemurs were when landing and taking the food from our hands; no claws or teeth, just very soft leathery hands”. The Zoo’s animal feeding experiences are a must for animal fans - some who’ve experienced the magic of handfeeding the loveable ring-tailed lemurs say it’s like starring in their very own Madagascar movie. Newquay fire fighter Nick Jones has had some amazing experiences in his time, but admitted: “Having a family of lemurs leaping through the trees towards me then landing on my head, arms and shoulders was definitely one of the weirdest but most wonderful things I’ve ever done. Everyone should try it!” For £45, two people can venture onto Lemur Island with a bowl of tasty treats guaranteed to make them a magnet for these hugely entertaining and cheeky creatures, which originate from the island of Madagascar, off South East Africa. The Zoo is open year-round and its animal experiences make unique and unforgettable gifts for birthdays, Christmas or just a special day out. You can go behind the scenes in the penguin pool or spend the day as a junior or adult keeper, feeding and handling the animals alongside the Zoo’s experienced team. Full details about all the Zoo’s animal experiences are at www.newquayzoo.org.uk

There was a serious note to Newquay’s Fire and Rescue Services taking part in the Lemur experience: Newquay’s operational fire crew are engaging with staff and members of the public to raise awareness of the growing trend of accidental dwelling fires within the town area. Evidence has shown over 50% of fires were caused by cooking, and 80% of those fires were between the hours of 2200 and 0400. Follow these tips to stay safe at home: • Never leave cooking unattended. • If you’re called away, remove the pan from the heat or turn it off. • Double check the cooker is off when you have finished cooking. • Do not cook if you are under the influence of alcohol or prescription drugs. • Make sure you have a working smoke alarm. Get one with a ‘hush button’ so you can silence it if it goes off by accident. • If it’s late and you’re tired, consider getting a take out. • If you have a fire, don’t take risks. Turn the cooker off if it’s safe to do so. Never throw water on it. Get Out, Stay Out and Call 999. For more information on kitchen safety, smoke alarms and other aspects of staying safe in the home, please look on the website at www.cornwall.gov.uk/.../cornwall-fire-and-rescue-servicehomepage or call Newquay Community Fire Station on 01637 871195.

HOT PLATES

Anyone with a nose for good food will have noticed lately that Newquay isn’t only famous for its beautiful beaches, but it’s also become something of a foodie hotspot. Seven takes a look at the newest and most cosmopolitan dining experiences on offer in the town.

The Bullpit Smokehouse and Bar BEACH ROAD • AUTHENTIC AMERICAN BBQ A real slice of America has come to Newquay with the Bullpit’s American style BBQ ribs, steaks and hamburgers. Bringing an ambience of an authentic smokehouse to town, owner Andy Jenkins grew up in America and was trained by famous American ‘Pitmasters’ such as Fast Eddy Maurin, Konrad Haskins and US television personality Dave Bouska. Bullpit specialities include Beef Brisket imported from the US, and baby back ribs. The food is freshly prepared and smoked on site over hickory wood, using spice rubs and BBQ sauces created by Andy. The Bullpit features a quirky bar decorated with original Americana, including vintage metal signs, traffic lights, a whiskey still, gun-slinger bar stools, a rattlesnake, and a huge mounted Texas longhorn over the bar. On the second floor is a family friendly restaurant with a bison’s head on the wall. In fact, due to its extremely low levels of fat, high levels of protein, iron, zinc and omega 3’s, kangaroo meat is extremely healthy, as well as tender and succulent. Australian owner and chef Chris Brookes has a tangible passion for food, and the menu incorporates the finest elements of many dishes around the world. His passion for food is evident in the menu selection, which reflects the typical dishes served in the different regions of Portugal. This winter Alex is putting Cataplana on the menu. Cataplana is popular on the Algarve, and is the name of the recipe and utensil in which you cook it (like tagine). The food is placed in the dish and enclosed, simmering slowly to let the flavours develop. Similar to paella, seafood features heavily alongside other other meat. Also for winter, stronger tasting dishes are being served up with ingredients like cheese, parma ham and chorizo. And to liven things up during the long winter months there’s music nights on Friday and Saturday to accompany your meal.

BRIGHT and Cosy INTERIOR DESIGN

interiors that banish those winter blues WORDS BY EVE WOOLDRIDGE

Transforming your living room to be cosy and bright for winter is simple. Thick pile rugs, woolly cushions and warm fires are on our list to help create a warm living room. Seven asked Elaine at Camellia Interiors to give us some top tips on creating a perfect winter abode, and asked Reloved about how to upcycle furniture.

Camellia Interiors’ Top Tips for your Winter Abode USE WARM COLOURS By using warmer tones in your room, you immediately blast those winter blues! Painting is a cost-effective way of redecorating. Do so with the idea of summer in mind – burnt orange, rich reds and golden yellows will instantly cure those summertime cravings.

Elaine suggests… Baked Cherry Little Greene Paint, Heat Little Greene Paint and Marigold Little Greene Paint LIGHTING The right lighting is essential to create a homely atmosphere in wintertime. When the light draws in early you want to illuminate your room as much as possible and enjoy a cosy glow. Mix up your accent lighting with your task lighting, so practicalities are covered as well as aesthetics. Candlelight is also a great way of turning the dreary winter nights into something much more magical and charming!

Reloved Kernow’s Top Tips for Upcycling Reloved Kernow was born a year ago, with the motto Revive, Refresh, Reborn - everything deserves a second chance to shine. In an attempt to counteract today’s throwaway society, Reloved Kernow reuses and recycles wooden furniture in a creative way. They take the old and tired and turn it into something bespoke, beautiful and stylish, using quality paints from Annie Sloan’s chalk paint range (sold in store). • Don’t throw away your old wooden furniture. Tired dark wood or outdated orange pine can be transformed using self-priming paint like Annie Sloan Chalk paint. Self-priming means there’s no need for all that laborious sanding and stripping. • Wax pieces after painting to seal the paint and give a durable, wipeable finish. • Experiment with pattern by lining drawers and open shelves with pretty wallpaper for added interest. • Swap old drawer handles and knobs for beautiful ceramic ones to finish off your bespoke creation. • If you’re not confident with colour, use a basic colour wheel to guide you in creating a harmonious or contrasting colour scheme. without making the space feel smaller. FOCUS ON... SURFBOARDS

BAG THE PERFECT SURFBOARD

B

eing the UK’s unofficial surfing capital, with surf shops lining every street, Newquay is the perfect place to buy all your equipment from topnotch wetsuits and surfing accessories, to the most important piece of kit – your surfboard. But

with so many different types and shapes of boards to choose from, how do you know which one to buy? Seven looks at

where to head to find the perfect surfboard for you. What sort of board to buy depends on your surfing ability and style. If you’re a beginner you are likely to be learning on a soft board or ‘foamie’. Then once you progress you need to decide if you would prefer to upsize to a longboard or downsize to a shortboard. However don’t jump straight to one of the extremes, as you will find it very difficult to paddle, handle new speeds and even catch waves. For example, if you want to ride shorter boards, downsize from a mini-mal to a fish before hitting your shortboard goal.

Emoceanl, Gover Lane

FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO NEWQUAY South African Brandon Ballard set up Emoceanl surf shop after moving to Newquay

for its surf culture in 1998 – and the store has been going strong ever since. Now three

shops in a row, Emoceanl has a dedicated board room, and men’s and women’s shops stocking Santa Cruz, Bodyglove and Kuccia brands. Brandon also distributes Spider boards, and there is only a two-week turnaround on bespoke boards.

Seven asked Brandon for his recommendations for intermediate and advanced

surfers:

The Spider Bomb – easy to paddle and super-fast down the line, while flat spots are easily navigated with the assistance of finely tuned hydro-channels on the bottom deck. It’s the ultimate fun board for ankle to head-high waves. £445

The Spider Havoc – a board that “likes to be surfed explosively” and is the go-to

board for the Spider international team riders. It has extra kick in the small squash tail and a souped-up rocker, as well as a deep concave running through the bottom half of the board. For the advanced surfer, the Havoc is an excellent board that is going to help take your surfing to the next level. £445 www.spidersurfboards.co.uk

Sunset Surf, Fore Street ONE FOR THE LADIES

There is no specific surfboard that will be better for women over men. The basic rule is more

foam, more float, which makes surfing easier but may reduce the manoeuvrability of the

board. Ladies tend to be smaller and lighter than men and will get away without as much volume in their surfboards.

At Sunset Surf the best-selling surfboard for

ladies is the Fourth Reload – a surfboard built to have as much volume as possible without

compromising on the manoeuvrability. You

can go a lot shorter so that it is easier to carry,

transport and to control in the water; making it ideal for women. – Amanda Hovell www.sunsetsurfnewquay.co.uk

Custard Point, Alma Place LONGBOARD HEAVEN

The Ultimate Noserider was originally designed by Tim

Mellors as a small wave competition longboard. The design brief was to be able to out paddle the other competitors,

allowing the best wave selection. The board is stable and

fast planing, with effortless nose-rides due to the parallel nose channel and refined noserider rails. Put it on a rail

and feel the gouging bottom and top turns. This is probably one of the best-selling longboards in the UK and the 9’1”

and 9’4” have won many longboard contests. Perfect for our summer swells and just screams fun!

TURN UP THE HEAT FOR PROGRESSIVE SURFERS Captain Cave Man is the next evolution of our

best-selling model, the P13. Essentially it’s the same board but with tweaks thanks to input from our

rounded off tail. The result is that it’s easier to drive across flat sections whilst maintaining speed, and

has the advantage of even tighter pocket surfing in medium to small conditions. £429. – Tom Cullen www.adamssurfboards.co.uk

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Winter Warmers Seven checks out Newquay’s Indian restaurants and takeaways in search of traditional, freshly prepared Indian food, and discovers a world of delicious, varied regional cuisine with surprising health benefits.

INDIAN SUMMER DELIGHT

BY MIKE SEARLE

It was appropriate that I visited Indian Summer in the middle of September, while Newquay was basking in the sunshine of its own Indian summer.

The restaurant has been in East Street for about

12 years and is a popular with visitors and locals

alike, priding itself on offering friendly service and a comprehensive menu.

Owner Abdul Chowdhuri told me that, as well as

the popular vindaloos, kormas and bhunas, the chef

(Abdul’s brother), likes to offer something different, based on Bengali and Bangladeshi dishes such as

Anarkoli chicken or lamb (£6.95) or Bengal Machley fish (£6.75). There are also several veggie dishes on 40

seven

the menu, including Vegetable Kofta and Vegetable Jalfrezi (£5.10).

There’s a Sunday evening all-you-can-eat buffet for

£8.95 (£4.50 for kids); Tuesday night is banquet night (three courses for £9.95); and on Wednesdays (except during August) there’s a 20% discount on your meal.

I plumped for Nawabi Delight (£7.50), a delightful

mix of chicken, lamb and king prawns with

aubergines, onions and peppers. The spice blend

in this dish was unique and absolutely delicious. It

was washed down by Lal Toofan Indian lager, a very refreshing accompaniment that Abdul tells me is brewed using basmati rice.

Spice Talk S

o what makes Indian food so tantalisingly tasty? Indian chefs have more than 25 spices they regularly use in Indian cuisine. As the Maharajah’s owner Vasant Maru suggests, Indian food relies on the spices in which it’s cooked: “It is interesting to see an

Indian cook at work, with a palette of spices, gratuitously sprinkling these powders in exact pinches into the dish in front of him,” says Vasant. “It is these complexities of regional food in India that make it such a fascinating experience.” Seven takes a look at some of the herbs and spices used in Indian cuisine and Vasant gives us a rundown of the most commonly used herbs and spices his chefs use. Some of these spices also have positive medicinal properties, which can help boost the immune system over the winter months. TURMERIC – This is the star player of Indian cuisine. It’s the root of a plant, which is boiled and powdered, and adds colour and flavour to curries. This spice reduces fat, purifies and helps circulate blood, eases pain associated with the inflammation of joints, enhances body colour and is an effective antiseptic. CORIANDER – Both the leaves and the seeds of this herb are packed with goodness. The seeds are crushed or roasted to enhance the flavour of curries. Coriander aids digestion and is rich in iron, packed with vitamin C and increases good cholesterol. GINGER – Originating from India, this sovereign root wards off colds and flu, and is effective against pain. Good for the blood circulation and helping relieve any joint aches, it also relieves sore throats and head colds, not to mention its aphrodisiac properties. CARDAMON – These dried aromatic pods of plants contain small seeds, which have a pleasant aroma. Regarded as a cardiotonic (having a tonic effect on the heart) and expectorant, the seeds can also be chewed as breath freshener. GARLIC – Valued for its flavour and ability to combine with other ingredients, this is regarded as a very good immune booster, a powerful antibiotic and an aid to digestion. FENUGREEK – Its seeds have a pleasantly bitter taste and are copiously used as an ingredient in pickle masalas. Its green leaves are rich in iron, calcium and sulphur, and are extensively used in Indian cooking. ANISEED – This is highly aromatic and has a sweetish scent and flavour. It is a medicinal plant that is used for curing colds, coughs, sleeplessness, piles and stomach ache.

Classic Films on Screen

Newquay’s Lighthouse Cinema is screening a season of themed nights throughout winter, and you can choose which films they show. General Manager Lerryn Ryall explains how the idea came about: “We get frequent requests for older films, but it’s rarely viable to show them. By creating a regular event around classic films, it enables people to see their favourite films on the big screen”. You’re invited to vote for the films you’d like to see via the cinema’s Facebook page or at the box office. Some up-coming themes include horror, classic Christmas movies and musicals. Each showing is accompanied by fancy dress competitions and surprises on the night! Lerryn added: “Once people have voted we want them to get involved in creating a great atmosphere for the night. We welcome all feedback, suggestions and new ideas for theme nights”. To get involved go to the Lighthouse Cinema Newquay page on Facebook.

LIVE IN NEWQUAY Lighthouse Cinema is launching a season of live, streamed productions from across the globe. This means you can see the latest ballet, opera and theatre performances without the high cost or travelling to London and other cities. The performances include a wealth of stars from stage and screen, including Benedict Cumberbatch in

Frankenstein, Bryn Terfel in L’Elisir d’Amore, and Gillian Anderson in A Streetcar Named Desire. There are also many showings for families such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by the Royal Ballet, and an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
