WELCOME BACK WINTER… In this issue of Seven we’re celebrating the town’s history, marine life, an exciting world food offer and the upcoming Christmas festivities! We’re over the moon to bring you the 8th edition of Seven magazine – the final edition to be produced within the first five-year term of Newquay Business Improvement District. When we discussed launching Seven back in 2011, it was an aspiration of Newquay BID to bring together the community in a publication that celebrated all things Newquay, as well as creating a magazine that inspired and encouraged visitors to our town. We have been overwhelmed with the overall result – from all the content that we have been able to include to the support from businesses, visitors and residents. In our festive issue we’ve trawled Newquay’s high street to bring you a huge selection of

The Cribbar
The Cribbar, a reef off Towan headland, is Newquay’s infamous big wave spot. It rarely breaks, but when it does in the winter months it’s spectacular to see. The town gathers to watch Britain’s top surfers taking on huge waves, and because it breaks so close to the headland you get a bird’s-eye view of the action. It’s impressive! It was in 1965 that a landmark big-wave session went down at The Cribbar. Bob Head, Rod Sumpter and Jack Lydgate became the first surfers to paddle out to the reef and ride the triple overhead waves with 15 to 20 foot faces. It marked the birth of big-wave surfing in Britain. To recognise and celebrate this important anniversary, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched with the aim of raising £15,000 to put up a bronze surfboard sculpture on Towan Head, overlooking The Cribbar. It will symbolise: the importance of surf culture to Newquay, commemorate The Cribbar pioneers, and create a new and unique visitor attraction. Five Minutes with the OYSTER LADY This summer Katy Davidson, aka The Oyster Lady, opened a sensational seafood cafe above the Newquay Harbour, from where she serves up delicious produce freshly landed by fishing boats from the harbour below. Katy, why did you name the cafe Amity? It’s a seafood bar named after the island in Jaws – one of my favourite films, and its name also means friendship, good relations and harmony. Why Newquay? I believe that Newquay is having a renaissance and the time felt right for opening here when a little premises at the top of South Quay Hill popped up. We had one week before Whitsun to open, so it was all hands on deck helping to fix up the space. What’s on the menu? The menu developed as I became familiar with what was available from the fishing fleet in the harbour directly below us. It’s wonderful to have the lobster, crab and fresh fish delivered from the boats to my kitchen within minutes. It’s as fresh as it gets. I do of course have oysters on the menu as well; and our bespoke seafood platter and BBQ box service has been a real success too: It’s been getting lovely, local seafood onto tables and beaches throughout Newquay all summer. Newquay’s food scene is now becoming renowned and nationally heralded. The much lauded, gourmet guide to Cornwall, the Saltwater
Kitchen Cookbook, devotes an entire chapter to the popular Cornish region that is evidently sharpening its reputation as a foodie mecca. Surf SEED Conference SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 2016
Cornwall College’s Surf SEED Conference is an event for anyone with a passion for surfing, the ocean and our beautiful coastline. The event will look at the social, environmental, economic and developmental impacts of the surfing industry in a bid to raise awareness of how these topics affect the surfing world and those within it. There are already several speakers confirmed for the 2016 event, including pro surfer Sam Bleakley, Chris Hines MBE from A Grain of Sand, Adam Porter from Oath, Joe Taylor from the Wave Project, Nick Rees from Surfing GB and Karl Fice-Thompson – the UK’s first ever beach teacher.

Newquay’s Festive Festival 27-29 November
On Friday 27th November Newquay’s wintry skies will be lit up by a riot of colour from a magical lantern parade, the official switching on of the Christmas lights and a glittering fireworks display over the harbour. Over 100 glowing creations and their makers will set off from Narrowcliff at 6.30pm, parading along Cliff Road and East Street, where they will be joined by none other than Father Christmas and his reindeer. During the afternoon the reindeer will be entertaining children at the Hotel Victoria from 4.30 to 6.30pm. Evening celebrations will culminate with a festive fireworks display over the harbour at 8.45pm. Visitors can enjoy the spectacle whilst also making the most of Newquay’s late-night shopping, during which many retailers will be throwing open their doors until 8.30pm. Throughout the rest of the weekend Newquay’s Music and Ale Festival will be in full swing in Fore Street car park, with a whole host of fantastic music and local ales. There will also be an array of free festive workshops that you can find out more about in the free Festive Events Guide from Newquay’s Tourist Information Centre (available from Wednesday 18th November), which lists details of all local events up until New Year’s Eve.

This year saw the biggest Boardmasters yet, with over 150,000 people flocking to the five-day surf and music festival that is now a key fixture on the UK music and surf scene. With headliners Faithless, Rudimental and Bastille, an impressive line-up of support acts, warm sunshine and great waves, Boardmasters gave its fans an amazing weekend. Electric Beach
Now in its fourth year, Electric Beach was a fantastic success this summer, having moved from Watergate Bay to Fistral Beach. A sell-out event with a beautiful backdrop of the golden sands and ocean, 3,000 people came to watch incredible acts such as Australian legends The Cat Empire, Alabama 3, Dreadzone and a host of other great live music. What with the chill factor, the whipping wind and work taking up our daylight hours, it’s almost impossible for most of us to get in the sea every day. However, if you don’t keep on top of your fitness your surfing performance will suffer, so here some tips to help you surf winter. MIKE SEARLE
Stay Surf Fit
So, what can you do to stay on top of your game through winter? Two things happen when you surf less. First, your paddle fitness decreases; second, your timing goes. When you lose paddle fitness it makes it harder to get out and harder to catch waves, consequently decreasing your surfing ability because you’re tired. The best activity to keep up your paddle fitness is swimming. You need to get in three times a week. It also helps keep up your water confidence. Aim for sets of 16 lengths front crawl as a basic level. If you can’t do that, then do as many crawl as possible, then one breaststroke to get your breath, or alternate one length of each. You’re going for stamina and distance, not speed. Getting to your feet wearing extra layers of neoprene is hard, so get to a fitness or yoga class to improve your strength, stamina and flexibility. Last winter he took on the infamous Nazare wave in Portugal with his jet-ski partner Sebastian Steudtner, and made global headlines when the team caught the biggest wave in the world, as judged by the WSL XXL Wave category. They do a really tasty prawn linguine too – not for breakfast though! Where do you go for some peace and quiet? I like to walk along the River Gannel at low tide, perhaps over to Crantock beach. That stretch of summer and winter, so it’s a good place to go for some head space all year round. Where the best place to get lunch with a view? That’s a really tricky one because there are so many good choices in Newquay these days. I love the new restaurants at Fistral, but for lunch I’d probably choose The Fern Pitt Café on Riverside Crescent. It’s renowned for its crab sandwiches and the view over the River Gannel. What do your kids like doing in Newquay? Newquay is a great place for the kids to grow up, as there is so much outdoor space and a great choice of beaches. They are happy just getting sandy and running in and out of the sea, and they also love going to the zoo where the lions are a particular favourite.

Guardians of the Sand and Sea The sea is at the heart of life in Newquay. The local coastline is teaming with marine life year-round, and in summer attracts more exotic summer visitors such as basking sharks and sunfish. Newquay Marine group, a group of local volunteers, work throughout the seasons to protect and promote Newquay’s marine and coastal environment. Their activities include surveys, talks, family-friendly activities and campaigning.
Gabriella Gilkes of the group says: “Newquay has such a beautiful coastline and boasts a rich and diverse sea life. This is very much part of what makes Newquay the most popular tourist destination in Cornwall, so it’s vital that we look after it.” She adds: “We are always looking to welcome new members to the group and we are really keen to work with local businesses to promote more sustainable packaging, to reduce littering and to recognise those businesses that are doing more to help the environment.’ Top marine activities in Newquay • Seal and dolphin watching in the harbour and along the coast. • Eat Newquay crab in a local restaurant, or buy one from a local fisherman to cook at home. • Get out to sea – try surfing, coasteering, a sea safari, snorkelling, surf boat rafting, kayaking, paddle boarding or a simple swim. • Do your own instant #2MINUTEBEACHCLEAN – any litter you take home or pop in the bin is less to contaminate the sea and endanger animals.
Local sea life Seals
Newquay harbour is home to grey and common seals that can often be spotted at high tide from the harbour walls as they meet the fishing boats returning with their catch. Dolphins and porpoises Common and bottlenose dolphins can often be spotted from boats and from the shore. Occasionally you can also spot a porpoise. Crabs and Lobsters Newquay is world famous for its spider crabs, but you will also find edible crabs, lobsters and hermit crabs here. Rock pool life From limpets, anemones and shrimps, to more rare breadcrumb sponges and blennies, Newquay’s rock pools are brimming with life year-round. It’s best to explore at low tide; most beaches have rock pools, including Fistral and Tolcarne.

WWII EVACUATION TO NEWQUAY In the summer of 1940, 244 school boys from Gresham school, in Norfolk, were evacuated to Newquay’s Bay and Pentire Hotels. This wartime adventure had an impact on the pupils and on the town’s history.
T
he evacuation was due to the Government’s concern that Norfolk would be a likely starting point if the German’s invaded. On 25 June 1940, within 48 hours of letters being sent to parents advising them

From the pupils’ point of view, despite often cramped conditions, food rationing, mined beaches and the blackout, it was an enjoyable adventure with swimming in the sea, cliff-top sports and endless opportunities for boyish mischief. As Headmaster Philip Newells recounted: “Some students were allocated the top floor of the Pentire Hotel. The new occupants soon discovered that their floor had previously housed the hotel bar! A

The Atlantic and Headland Hotels were transformed into RAF hospitals, while The Pentire and Bay hotels were entirely given over to the schools. The golf course was turned into a rugby pitch and pigs were reared in the gardens of The Pentire Hotel. Pupils helped pick potatoes in Crantock, joined the Home Guard and regularly ran dawn patrols along the cliffs. (They were sometimes spotted scaling the cliffs, too.)

The boys returned to Norfolk by Christmas 1944, and as one pupil reflected fondly: “It would be true to say that we learnt from our exile, a certain freedom of life that we have been able to bring back with us to Holt. The effect of this freedom has been wholly good.” Since 1990 Frank King has organised reunions of the Gresham Boys, held at The Pentire Hotel. One hundred old boys attended the first reunion but, sadly with the passage of time, less can come, and thirty are now left.

What is your favourite emerging brand? I love Bellfield – it’s home-grown and the knitwear is amazing. There is lots of burnt colours such as burgundy and tans, which are influenced by a 70’s colour palette. What about seasonal accessories? You can accessorize your look with a huge scarf, cape or poncho – perfect for lazy Sundays. We have also seen a trend shift in hats this year, with wide brim fedoras and floppy brimmed felt numbers being popular all year round. Team them up with a pair of Chelsea boots to keep in line with the retro trend. What about a glam look for a Christmas party? We are championing lacy dresses this year; these look great with a statement necklace or earrings and don’t forget that faux fur to keep warm. And for the boys? This winter the catwalks have been brimming with gimmick tees featuring all sorts of childhood memories. Our favourite is the Chunk Star Wars Collection What is the new black for men? There is a couple of ‘new’ blacks this winter, but we are finding that Navy and burgundy are really popular and we have lots of great pieces in these colours. What brands are exciting? As wrapping up warm is a big thing for men this
