Newquay Zoo Providing hours of fun come rain or shine, Newquay Zoo has been a firm favourite with locals and visitors

since 1969. What with 130 of the world’s rare and exciting creatures – from creepy crawlies, birds and otters, to zebras, red pandas and big cats – it’s no surprise that this is a much-loved attraction.

Feeding time is one of highlights of a visit, especially at the penguin enclosure where you can watch these black

and white birds dive and slide into the pool after the fish. If younger members of the family fancy getting involved you can pre-book penguin and lemur experiences – or even sign up to be a fully-fledged young zoo keeper for a day. New attractions this summer include a ‘Flight Aviary’ for the Scarlet Macaws, which will provide a much-

improved habitat for these tropical birds as well as an enclosed viewing platform for visitors to watch them. Go to www.newquayzoo.org.uk to find out about openings times and news.

GARDEN A TIMELESS PLACE: TRENANCE GARDENS This summer take time to stroll, sit in the sun or while away an hour or so at Trenance Gardens. Emilie Calhaem takes a look at the history of one of Newquay’s beloved attractions.

I

n 1895 William Wilton lived in Rose Cottage – one of three heritage cottages in Trenance Gardens beside Newquay’s boating lake. A member of the coastguard, Wilton spent his free time tending

his allotment above the cottage, where he grew cider apples to make a home-brew that was infamous around the town.

The gardens themselves really started to take shape in 1932, when

the Great Depression was taking its toll on the town. The unemployed men of Newquay set to work cultivating the Trenance area, and in

return for their hard work they were paid dole money, tobacco and a

pasty for lunch. They were also given some tea at the end of the week to take home for their wives.

Nowadays, Trenance Gardens contains some stunning examples of

sub-tropical trees and shrubs – such as the Cork Oak (a species which, in its heyday, was at the root of a European industry responsible for

the employment of 30,000 people) or the beautiful Dawn Redwood,

which was grown from seeds donated by Kew Gardens after the tree was thought to be extinct.

To celebrate this part of Newquay’s rich horticultural heritage, the

Newquay in Bloom committee has put together a Tree Walk providing

a greater insight into the area. Why not pick up a copy from the Tourist

Information Centre on Marcus Hill, and meander round the gardens and boating lake to learn more about this unique part of town?

ELSIE

Elsie Pinniger is busy lady. When she’s not in her studio making wetsuits for her Neon brand, she’s serving up delicious homemade cakes and coffee at the Jam Jar, or gliding on her longboard at Crantock. Seven grabbed five minutes for a chat with one of Newquay’s most stylish entrepreneurs. Elsie, Neon wetsuits are really cool, what inspired you to start making them?

I started making suits for myself because women’s wetsuits had been badly designed for so long, and I spend so much time in a

wetsuit that I want to feel good in one. I love thinking about shape and colour, and making them look flattering. I take from fashion

too – I’m quite a classic girl at heart and I love bringing lines across in a slightly different way.

You seem pretty much to be able to turn your hand to everything, what motivates you?

I really enjoy business and love getting involved in it. I’m not much

of a’ book’ learner, so just getting on with it suits me! I’ve got a great day-to-day lifestyle that inspires me and I’m grateful for that. All

the business courses in the world won’t teach you as much as just

trying it. The fear of failure stops most people from doing anything, it definitely held me back for years... get over it.

If you could live in another time, which decade would you choose to live in?

I’d actually quite like to live in the future for a while. I get pretty scared about where the world stands today both socially and

environmentally. It would be good to know if we sort it out! If I went

back in time, I think the 40s is when things started being fun – cars, fashion and travel were all the focus post-war and must have been super exciting. The feeling after such dark times must have been amazing, carefree and rebellious. So what’s your guilty pleasure?

Salted Hoola Hoops and Cadburys Buttons... together! Lastly, what are you looking forward to mostly this summer?

Surfing... from dawnies to sunset surfs... just having lots of hours to play in the sea! 14

COOKING SPIDER CRABS WITH TOWN CLERK ANDREW CURTIS

18

seven

newquay lifestyle magazine

‘‘

Newquay has a reputation for having the best spider crabs in Cornwall. Often overlooked in the British diet, local chef Sanjay Kumar – of Newquay’s Headland Hotel – has made it his mission to put Spider crab back on our plates. As part of this process he took Andrew Curtis, Newquay Town Council’s town clerk, into the hallowed ground of his kitchen to show him how to cook the delicious ‘Newquay Life Boat Slip Dressed Crab on Toast’. Whilst I was initially nervous at the thought of handling live crab for the first time, it turned out to be as easy as making cheese on toast – but tasted so much better! Before now,

I thought crab was one of the hardest dishes to prepare –

especially with all the shell to get through – but it was easy.

In fact the preparation was so simple and quick that anyone can do it.

The end result was so amazing that I’m already looking

forward to showing off the recipe to my family and friends. And it was cheap too; the crab we used was £5 and fed

two very hungry people. It just goes to show the myths

surrounding seafood really are just that. Spider Crab on toast

’’

is cheap, simple, quick and tasty – so give it a go and support the local supply. Andrew Curtis

Spider crabs are native to our coastline and available throughout the year – although their main season is spring and early summer. A large proportion of the UK’s Spider crab catch is exported to countries such as Spain, where it is seen as a delicacy.

TRY YOUR HAND AT...COOKING SPIDER CRABS

“Although on first impressions it looks fiddly and tough to handle, preparing and eating Spider crab is easy, and a special celebration of Cornish Seafood. “Let’s make Cornish Spider crab our dish of the day this summer, and help our shell fishermen get proper value for their catch,” says Sanjay Kumar. 20

IF YOU FANCY MAKING THIS TASTY DISH AT HOME, HERE’S WHAT SANJAY AND ANDREW COOKED

NEWQUAY LIFE BOAT SLIP DRESSED CRAB ON TOAST Spider crab is an unsung hero of Newquay’s

impressive array of seafood. My recipe here is aimed at the adventurous cook who wants to

impress, while enjoying the best-kept secret of our seafood spread. Let’s crack on with it... Prep time: 5 min Cook time: 20 min Serves: Two INGREDIENTS

• Generous dollop crème fraiche • Good pinch mild Madras curry powder • Rapeseed oil for sprinkling • 1 Spider crab, cooked (picked) • 1 lemon, zest only (skin grated) • 5 leaves chopped parsley • 2 slices granary sourdough bread, or panini will do • Lemon wedges, to serve • Black pepper, to crush • Wild rocket leaves • Sea salt, to crush • 1 boiled egg, sliced

METHOD

Get your fishmonger to prepare/pick the spider crab or: • Boil the Spider crab in rumbling water for 8 minutes; the crab turns from mottled brown to bright pink when cooked. Put aside to cool. • After half an hour cooling, using a heavy saucepan or hammer, crack the claws and extract the sweet, white meat. • Break the crab into two and get rid of the dead man’s fingers. Extract the brown meat from the body. (The cracked crab shells can be used to make a fragrant fish stock for soups and stews.) • Put the crème fraiche into a small bowl and mix in a generous pinch of curry and a splash of rapeseed oil. • Mix the spiced crème fraiche together with the white and brown crab meat and fold through a good grinding of freshly cracked black pepper. • Stir in the lemon zest and chopped parsley. • Drizzle the slices of granary sourdough with a little olive oil and sea salt, then cook on a griddle until toasted on both sides. • To serve, put the sourdough on a board, top each piece with a quenelle (oval) of the crab mix and sliced boiled egg, and serve with lemon wedges and peppery rocket leaves. • Enjoy your locally-landed crab on toast over a Newquay sunset and a good glass of vino. Note: You can supplement Spider crab with any other crab, but it doesn’t taste as sweet. This dish features on the new summer menu of the Terrace Restaurant, Headland hotel.

HIDDEN GEM WORDS BY STEVE ENGLAND

The Fly Cellars Just a short stroll from the town centre, down the hill from the Red Lion pub, you’ll find the

historic Fly Cellars. Built around the 1800’s, the Fly Cellars was once one of Newquay’s many fish

production factories. Boats that went out to catch pilchards were moored here, including four of

the town’s ancient gigs – Teaser, Dove, Newquay

and Treffry. The gigs would head out on the cry of ‘Heva, Heva’ from spotters’ lookouts, surround

the shoals of fish with nets and then bring them ashore where they were packed and processed in the cellars.

This type of fishing has been recorded in

Newquay as far back as 1529, and the industry was

the foundation of Newquay’s growth from around the 1830s onwards. However, the pilchard catches started to decline due to changing migratory

habits of the fish and by the 1870s herrings took their place as the fishing mainstay. At which time there was a herring-curing factory here,

that was in use for many years after before being destroyed by fire.

Today the names of the Fly Cellars are kept

alive because the Newquay gigs – which can be

seen out in the bay on many a summer night – are named after them.

These days The Cellars is one of Newquay’s

most popular fishing spots, where mackerel, garfish, pollack, plaice and small wrasse can all be caught with simple fishing gear and

bait (available at the Harbour Lights shop on Fore Street).

Beach Barbeques Summer was made for beach barbies and Newquay’s fantastic sandy bays make the perfect location for them! Here’s the lowdown on how to do beach barbeques from The Great Cornish Food Book.

Once a strange habit practised by our Antipodean and transatlantic cousins,

this most egalitarian way of eating is now a firm favourite all over Britain – out

come the barbies whenever the sun tries to shine, and sometimes even when it doesn’t. A Cornish beach on a warm summer evening has got to be one of the

best BBQ backdrops in the world. Soak up the dying rays, build up an appetite in the water, and unwind with friends and family as a tasty supper sizzles over the hot coals.

The only challenge is deciding what to cook. Spoilt for choice, it’s the perfect

opportunity for a mighty meat feast – succulent steak, perky pork sausages (a

robust flavour like garlic and red wine will come into its own), perhaps a juicy

tenderloin of venison, or how about a bunny burger (lean, healthy and cheap – kids love them)?

For purists though, ocean-side grilling means only one thing - freshly

Beach BBQ Essentials • Prep foods like salads beforehand for easy sand-free sides. • Take snacks – BBQ-ing always takes longer than you think. • Don’t forget tongs for handling hot food and a board to put it on. • Check the beach rules for BBQs and fire pits. • On a pebbled beach raise the BBQ off the pebbles, otherwise they will get hot and shatter. • Douse any hot sand with cold water before you leave. • Remember a bin bag and ALWAYS take all your litter home.

caught fish. Not all fish stand up to this treatment, but for bright, shiny

mackerel it’s perfect. Gutted and cooked whole, the oiliness of the skin keeps the fish moist and the smoke imparts that unmistakable open-air flavour. This is beach barbecuing simplicity at its best.

The Great Cornish Food Book: A collection of recipes, tales and morsels from the ocean, fields and cliff tops of Cornwall, is available to buy from www.greatcornishfood.co.uk for just £17.99 including postage and packaging.

Ride the waves! Newquay’s seven famous beaches offer fantastic surfing for the whole family – young and old, beginners and experts. Carve editor Steve England explains.

that everyone can do it – young or

But where do you get started? Well, as you doubtless know, Newquay

is the surf capital of Britain, so it

has everything you need whether

you’re getting started or training for the world tour!

Bellyboarding

Traditional wooden bellyboards are a whole lot of fun. All the local beach shops sell them and anyone can ride the whitewater to shore on one. Just remember

to swim between the red and yellow flags, and stay in waist-deep water. Some

bellyboarders take things to the next level by adding fins and catching the green (unbroken) waves – but make sure your swimming and beach knowledge are up to the challenge.

Bodyboarding

Bodyboarding is a great way to start having fun in the waves, and has

replaced bellyboarding as the easiest way to start surfing. Compared to wooden

bellyboards, bodyboards have more floatation, are softer on the skin and can be used by total beginners or top pros. The same safety rules apply, but once you start venturing further ‘out back’ be careful not to float too far out to sea and always take notice of the lifeguards.

Surfing

So you want to stand up? There are lots of places to hire surfboards (make sure you own or hire an appropriate wetsuit for the water temperatures, too) but taking lessons at one of the surf schools is the quickest and easiest way to

master surfing. With expert teachers and huge floaty surfboards, lots of schools record over 90% success rates for getting people standing on their first session.

Shape Up For Summer

Now that summer’s here it’s time to shake off the cobwebs, get outside and boost your fitness levels. Seven looks at ways to get you feeling fit and healthy, get an injection of vitamin D and get a suntan at the same time! WORDS BY LOUISE SEARLE

Coastal Running GOOD FOR: STAMINA

Running is a great way to reduce stress, burn calories and build strong bones. And the cliff tops and coastal paths

around Newquay have to be one of the most challenging, beautiful and invigorating locations for runners.

If you need the motivation, try joining a club. Newquay

Road Runners meets once a week all year round, and is open to

runners of all abilities. In summer they run along the beaches,

cliff paths, the Gannel and surrounding countryside. The main club night is Wednesday, meeting at Newquay Sports Centre at 6.30pm. See www.newquayroadrunners.co.uk for more info.

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) GOOD FOR: CORE STRENGTH

Born in Hawaii in the 1950s, SUP is sweeping the coastline

and inland waters too. A great workout for strengthening core and upper body muscles, and accessible to all ages and fitness levels, it basically involves propelling yourself along on an oversize surfboard with a long single-bladed paddle.

For a safe, scenic location to try your first strokes,

Newquay’s Gannel Estuary is one of Cornwall’s best SUP

locations. Or you can head to the beaches and try your hand at SUP on the waves.

Crantock Bay Surf School offers SUP tuition and promises

that beginners will be up and paddling with confidence within their first lesson. www.crantockbaysurfschool.com. 36

Naturally Good Being fit isn’t just about exercise – it’s also about what you put in your body. Wholesome, natural foods are the best way to get super fit, loose weight and feel energised for summer. Nourish your body from the inside out, with food containing high levels of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Salads are a great summer option full of nutrients, so why not give this tasty recipe a go?

Watermelon, Mint and Feta Salad with a Twist Sounds wrong, we know, but give this a go at summer

barbecues and you won’t be disappointed. A total crowd pleaser and so easy to make. If you really want hassle-free, then stick

with the basics of the watermelon, mint and feta with a twist

of lime. But the extra ingredients in this are worth the little bit of effort for sure. This is like eating a rainbow – so juicy, fresh and zingy.

SERVES 2

• 1 small red onion • Juice of 3 limes • ½ large watermelon (sweet and ripe) • 250g (1 cup) feta cheese • 1 bunch fresh flat leaf parsley • 1 bunch fresh mint, chopped • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 100g (½ cup) pitted black olives • Black pepper, to season

simple and tastes great!

1 Peel and halve the red onion, cut into very fine half moons and put into a small bowl to steep with the lime juice. This will take the edge off the raw onion taste. 2 Remove the rind and pips from the watermelon and cut into large bite-size chunks. 3 Cut the feta into similarly sized pieces and put them both into a large, wide, shallow bowl. 4 Tear off sprigs of parsley and add to the bowl along with the chopped mint. 5 Add the marinated onions, along with their pink juices, over the salad in the bowl. Add the oil and olives, then use your hands to toss the salad very gently so that the feta and melon don’t lose their shape. Add a good grinding of black pepper and taste to see whether the dressing needs more lime. 6 Don’t forget to eat the other half of the watermelon the next morning; this will refresh the senses and hydrate if you’ve gone a little overboard the night before. HEALTH TIP

Drink and eat rich, raw foods like watermelon, smoothies, juices and salads.

ALSO SERVING UP GREAT TASTING SALADS IN NEWQUAY: • Prego, Prego, East Street has a varied menu of salads and wraps. A Seven favourite is the salad, hummous and falafel wrap. • Gusto’s Deli Bar, South Quay Hill (at the top of the harbour hill), serves mouth-watering crunchy salads and flatbreads.

Liquid Health Grab the blender and start whizzing your way to good health. Smoothies are a great way of getting your five-a-day and an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. A simple blend of fruit, veggies, or both, they’re great for metabolism, giving you an energy boost without bad fats, cholesterol or empty calories. What with the celebs proclaiming smoothies as the secret of their glowing skin, they’re all the rage.

Tasty Salads

Are you put off salads by soggy lettuce and

uninspiring ingredients? Nicole and Jon at the Beached Lamb Café know how to make tasty, hearty salads.

If you’re going to make a salad, do it properly. At The Beached Lamb they believe a salad should be nutritious, delicious and totally filling, so when you order a salad here you don’t just

springy lettuce plus a whole heap of beautiful, colourful and interesting fresh ingredients.

Food For thought

Summer’s here so what better way to enjoy the warm weather by dining al fresco? Here’s some of our favourite Newquay eateries where you can enjoy fine food while watching cracking sunsets. Words by Mike Searle

Dining Al Fresco The Carnmarth Hotel WHERE: HEADLAND ROAD

01637 872519 • www.carnmarth.com What with sweeping views over the

golf course to Fistral, sunset views are striking from The Carnmarth.

From a menu stuffed with seasonal

local produce I plumped for the fresh seafood bouillabaisse followed by

sautéed monkfish with crushed new potatoes, pancetta and a cauliflower

and saffron cream sauce. Both dishes were mouth-wateringly tasty and

immaculately presented. And with

prices starting at a fiver for a starter

The Hotel California WHERE: PENTIRE CRESCENT

01637 879292 • www.hotel-california.co.uk

Adorned with tasteful sculpture and interesting art, what

really sets this hotel restaurant apart is the awesome view of the ever-changing Gannel.

The Eagles’ song reverberating in my head, I arrived at

the Hotel California in Pentire for a leisurely lunch. A light

and delicious dish of melon with parma ham, caviar, capers, olives, and a mango and strawberry coulis – washed down

with a small bottle of Prosecco – came to just £13. But you can

grab a burger for a mere £4.95 and still enjoy the jaw-dropping that residents in the neighbourhood pay millions for.

The Breaks Beach Bar and Kitchen WHERE: TOLCARNE BEACH 01637 854815 www.thebreakstolcarnebeach.co.uk

Bang on Tolcarne beach, you can’t get a table much

closer to the ocean than on the terrace at The Breaks.

With stunning sea views to soak up over a chilled

glass of Chablis, The Breaks is a perfect beachside

venue for friends and family to share great food and drink. As well as individual dishes such as West

Country burgers and sausages, they offer big sharing platters: a Paella for two is £25 including garlic

bread, and a BBQ platter is £16 including a drink.

I opted for local ale-battered fish and chips – at £12 with a glass of Prosecco – which I enjoyed on the

decking while watching Tolcarne’s famous high-tide wave, The Wedge. Splendid!

THE HARBOUR HOTEL

WHERE: NORTH QUAY HILL, 01637 873040 www.harbourhotel.co.uk

From big breakfasts to fresh fish the

food here is superb, but what takes your breath away is the vista that stretches

along Newquay’s dramatic coastline to Trevose head.

Once a harbour-side grain store,

this period building has been tastefully enhanced with contemporary features. Facing southeast, the terrace is a great

spot to have breakfast (served between 10 and 11.30am – a full English costs £8.50,

and chipolatas on granary bread £5.), but with its incredible views and delectable dishes this is an amazing spot at any time of day. On my visit I was lucky

enough to sample local stone bass served with roasted tomato risotto and caper dressing (£16). The Harbour Hotel is

definitely one of Newquay’s little gems. STYLE NOT SINCE THE ’70S HAS IT BEEN SO COOL TO SPORT A BEARD. BUT HAIRY CHINS ARE BACK IN VOGUE AND MALE GROOMING PRODUCTS ARE DE RIGUEUR.

Beard Maintenance

Beards are becoming more popular all the time, so Beach Shack have put together some simple tips to ensure you can join the beard nation with a bit of style:

• Minor touch ups can be done at home with a good pair of hairdressing scissors. Just tidy up your bottom lip and take the neckline up roughly two fingers above the Adam’s apple to keep a natural boarder.

• Pop into your barber for professional advice on

what best suits your face shape and strength of your facial forest.

• Your beard should be treated like the hair on your head A beard shampoo should be

used every other day – normal hair shampoos

sometimes contain ingredients that can wash the natural oils from your skin and cause dryness and irritation.

• Comb through your beard every day and rub in a few

drops of a beard oil to moisten the skin and keep the hair soft.

It beats shaving everyday and nothing feels better than getting the nod of approval from a fellow bearded gent in the street.
