WELCOME TO SEW CREATIVE LOUNGE

What started out as a few sewing classes a year has blossomed into a community space for all ages to learn and create. It’s not your ordinary sewing studio. It’s fun! It’s social! It’s sew creative! In this brochure, you’ll find lots of sewing classes to choose from including our signature classes, Sip and Sew DC, to our newly launched summer program for kids that will take the students to the fashion capital of the world (arguably), New York City! SIP & SEW DC - ADV. BEG/INTER This edition of Sip and Sew DC is for those who have mastered the basics and would like to learn more sewing techniques such as zipper installation, gathering, pockets and more. This is a 6-hour workshop that includes a break for lunch. All materials included plus two complimentary glasses of wine. Classes are held from 10am-4pm. OPEN STUDIO Need a little help to complete a sewing project? Want to make a project from one of our Sip and Sew DC classes? Come make it during our open studio hours with the help of an instructor. Classes will be held on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month. Class Fee: $50

BEGINNER CLASS SERIES

BEGINNER CLASS 1 Entry level class for true beginners. Students will learn to make a pillow, tote bag and pull on pajama bottoms. Emphasis will be placed on machine operation and reading a pattern. This class will take place over 4 sessions on Saturdays from 10-1pm. Class Fee: $145 Winter Session 1: January 27 - February 17 Winter Session 2: March 3 - March 31 Spring Session 1: April 14 - May 5

Summer Session 1: June 2 - June 23 Summer Session 2: July 7 - July 28 Summer Session 3: August 11 - Sept 8

BEGINNER CLASS 2 This class is designed for students who have a basic knowledge of sewing or have taken our Beginner Class 1. Students will make two shirts and build the following skills: button holes, collar, sleeves and cuff. This class will take place over 4 sessions on Sundays from 10am-1pm. Class Fee: $145 Winter Session 1: March 4 - March 25

Summer Session 1: June 10 - July 1

BEGINNER CLASS 3 Students will learn to construct and assemble a skirt and a pair of pants. Emphasis will be placed upon inserting a zipper, hemming, fitting, construction, buttonholes, and top-stitching techniques. This class will take place over 4 sessions on Sundays from 9:30am-12:30pm. Class Fee: $145 Winter Session 1: January 7 - January 28 Summer Session 1: July 22 - August 19 Spring Session 1: April 8 - May 6

SPECIALTY CLASSES Coat Making There is no better way to fall into the winter season than with a trendy coat. Student will learn several coat making techniques such as hemming, interfacing options, piping, collar, facing construction and more. (9 hours) January 4, 11, and 18, 2018 6-9pm Class Fee: $140 Blazer Construction Learn how to make a fully-lined peplum blazer using sewing techniques such as creating a lapel, inset sleeves and pleats. This class is for advanced beginning level seamstresses and above. (9 hours) March 1, 8, and 15, 2018 6-9pm Class Fee $140 Serger Basics Take your serger out of the box or closet and learn to thread and operate it with confidence. Projects include a pillow or dinner place mats and napkins as well as creating a booklet of sample stitches. (6 hours) April 5 and 12, 2018 6-9pm Class Fee: $95

SPECIALTY CLASSES (CONT.) Earth Day Project Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle: Bring in a pair of jeans and transform them into a stylish skirt. (3 hours) April 22, 2018 12-3pm Class Fee: $45 Handbag Construction and Hardware Learn new techniques that will help you create your own unique, trendy bag. You will learn how to sew with different fabrics, bag construction and different styles of hardware. Basic sewing skills required. (6 hours) May 3 and 10, 2018 6-9pm Class Fee: $95 Working with Knits Working with knits can be a challenge so come learn the basics from cutting, sewing techniques and notions. You will soon find that knits are fast and easy to sew and a great way to add glamour to your wardrobe. June 7 and 14, 2018 6-9pm Class Fee: $95 (6 hours)

MASTER CLASS SERIES Led by Mama Afia Nson Bonsu, this series focuses on traditional and contemporary African design techniques without the use of patterns. For advanced beginning level seamstresses and above. Supply list available upon registration. Wearable Art Art doesn't always belong on the wall. In this workshop, you will make a skirt or dress and create a work of art using fabric paint, stencils and print fabric. Painting experience is not necessary. January 20, 2018 2-7pm Class Fee: $65 The Great Makeover A great piece doesn't always have to start from fabric. For this class, bring a piece already created and Mama Afia will walk you through how to bring it back to life with your design. March 17, 2018 2-7pm Class Fee: $65 Mixed Textile Madness Sometimes one African print fabric is not enough. In this workshop, you will learn how to make bold statements with mixed prints and create your own design. May 19, 2018 2-7pm Class Fee: $65 Sassy Body Sculpting Struggling to make clothing that fits your body? Finally fitting demystified! Come learn how to create clothing that fits your own body perfectly. July 21, 2018 2-7pm Class Fee: $65

SEWING PALOOZA We all have them, and we all need to get them done. This will be the night where you can bring in your sewing projects to work on in an exciting sewing environment! This is not a class but you can come in and use the sewing machines and space to cut and layout. Also, please bring a dish to share with everyone! Events are held from 6-11pm on March 16, May 18, July 20 and September 21, 2018. Fee: $20

Sew Creative Kids is a fun skill-based sewing program for children ages 8-14 years old. Children will create four projects based on their skill level. Supply list available upon registration. Winter Session January 21 – March 26, 2018

Spring Break Program April 3-6, 2018, 9am-3pm Try something new this spring break and let them sew! Students ages 8-14 will test out their design skills and create a piece of their own during this 4-day session. All supplies included. Aftercare is available! Camp Fee: $300 Summer Sewing Enrichment Program Session 1: June 18 – July 20, 2018, 9am-3pm Session 2: July 23 – August 24, 2018, 9am-3pm Join us this summer for an amazing sewing enrichment program for youth ages 8-14. Campers will learn the basics of sewing with and without the machine, fashion illustration and design, styling, and more. They will go on a field trip every Friday including the Textile Museum, Anacostia Arts Center, a day trip to the Fashion District in New York City and more! Each session will culminate with a fashion show. Sign up for one session or both! Class projects are different in each session. Aftercare is available! Camp Fee per 5-week session (includes all supplies, excludes NY field trip): $975

Interested in hosting a fun and creative birthday party, special occasion, or event? Our private Sip and Sew DC classes are perfect for adults. With a minimum of 10 guests, you can choose your own project including tote bag, clutch, skirt and more! Children's birthday party packages are also available. FRIDAY NIGHT ARTIST SERIES Switch your Friday up a bit and join us for our Friday Night Artist Series featuring a local artesian. In these workshops, you will learn a variety of creative skills from knitting, jewelry making and painting to loc styling and makeup application. CLASS LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS Beginner For the true beginner who has never taken a sewing class. You will learn the fundamental skills and terminology of sewing. Beginner level is excellent for students returning to dance after an extended absence. Advanced Beginner For students who have a thorough working knowledge of sewing or have taken at least three Sip and Sew DC classes or Beginner Sewing 1. Intermediate For experienced seamstresses seeking a class that tests their knowledge and improves their sewing skills.
