SEWE.COM
WELCOME Since its inception in 1983, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition quickly became one of the largest displays of original wildlife and sporting art, sculptures and carvings in the country. Throughout the past three decades SEWE has boasted a rich history and we have proudly named artists, such as John Banovich, Greg Beecham, Carl Brenders, among other talents as Featured Artists. From traditional wildlife paintings and sculpture to abstract interpretations of plein air landscapes to North American & African big game paintings, SEWE’s collection is diverse and unsurpassed in the genre. SEWE is unique in our focus on the relationship between artists and collectors; if you have attended the Exposition and walked around the ballroom you have no doubt felt the energy and excitement for the art that SEWE embodies. This year, it is with great pride that we introduce select 2017 artists through the comprehensive book of SEWE art. The works featured as well as others on the website are available for purchase and the artists included will be present during the Exposition. We invite you to become a part of the rich history of SEWE at our 35th annual event. Sincerely,
Jimmy Huggins President, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition 3

Ezra Tucker 2017 FEATURED ARTIST
Ezra Tucker began his award winning career more than four decades ago in the field of illustration, producing many familiar advertisements and enduring images for a multitude of America’s Fortune 500 corporations. Some of his most noted works include his paintings of “Smokey the Bear” for the National Park Service, the Budweiser Clydesdales, an illustrated novel and movie poster for Lucas Films, LTD. His wildlife art has also been reproduced on United States Postal stamps. Tucker’s uniquely creative style and refreshing perspective gives his subjects a fresh appeal. He has spent many years pursuing his intense interest in nature, zoology and wildlife art. His approach to capturing a moment in time reveals a rarely highlighted detail, an incident or fact that can be a big dramatic scene or a subtle relaxed blink. Tucker’s bold and distinctive style of painting reflects acute observation and knowledge of his subject and displays an intimate and emotional portrait quality and adept storytelling. Choosing to paint
almost exclusively wildlife, he paints his animals as having apparent intelligence and individual distinctive personalities. Tucker’s original works hang in the permanent collections of the Booth Western Art Museum, The Pentagon Air Force Art Collection, AnheuserBusch, Inc., the Texas Rangers Historical Museum and the Rossignol Cultural Centre in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Ezra is a Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artist. The 2017 Featured Painting, Maternal Manner, portrays an elk cow and calf. “It was inspired by my observation of the beauty and warmth of the nurturing and protective relationship of mother to offspring,” says Tucker. “I wanted to capture the subtle interaction and physical contact of the mother elk with its offspring teaching the calf survival skills. My objective was to depict up-close, their reaction to the moment they become aware of a non-threatening admiring audience.”

Richard Loffler
2017 GUEST ARTIST / SCULPTOR Richard Loffler is passionate about what lives beneath the big skies. Nature and wildlife have been an integral part of his world since youth. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Loffler is inspired by the splendor and the natural beauty prairies have to offer. His work with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum from 1978 to 2000 became the impetus to his artistic endeavors. Always fascinated by the creations of nature and the themes of life it generates, Loffer believes nature is a tremendous foundation from which to acquire knowledge and understanding. Through evolution, each animal has carved its own original statement within this vast scheme of rhythm and
structure. Its spirit and vitality offer a perpetual platform from which to learn. The complex web that nature weaves for us cannot be understood in one artist’s lifetime; it is a forever growing and changing format and one that deserves distinction. “Working from life affords me controlled confidence. No questions go unanswered. My approach is traditional with impressionistic flavor. I try to capture the character of my subjects at moments of instinctive gesture, while controlling design and composition to present a grace to each piece. To study from life allows me simply the truth; it affords me the ability to pursue my passion as a life long venture.”

Van Keuren Marshall 2017 GUEST ARTIST / CARVER
Van Keuren Marshall grew up in South Carolina and from an early age enjoyed drawing and sketching birds. When he was 11 years old his great aunt gave him a 1942 bound edition of Audubon’s The Birds of America, which encouraged Marshall’s early interest in bird art and the natural world and led him to begin college as an art major and to finish with a biology degree.
with basswood to carve and burn intricate feather details in the decorative style of bird sculpture. These decorative pieces are usually life size and are painted realistically with oil colors. Marshall also enjoys carving birds from mahogany and walnut and leaving them unpainted. This interpretive style presents compelling, dynamic bird sculptures while highlighting the natural beauty of the wood.
Marshall’s post-college work as a cabinet maker and woodworker along with his continuing love of birds and art eventually led to a providential meeting in 1980 with Grainger McKoy, the renowned South Carolina bird sculptor. Grainger offered him an opportunity to apprentice at his studio on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina. This very generous offer encouraged and inspired Marshall’s eventual decision to become a full-time bird sculptor. Today, Marshall sculpts a broad range of birds from the tiny Ruby-throated Hummingbird to the full-size Wild Turkey Gobbler. He works primarily
His sculpture has been exhibited in the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Birds in Art Show, has won awards at the Ward Foundation World Wildfowl Carving Competition in Ocean City, Maryland and his “Courting Kestrels” won Best in World for Interpretive Wood Sculpture in 1990. His work can be found in numerous private collections. Van lives in Summerville, South Carolina with his wife Catherine and their black lab, Ollie. They have two sons in their early 20s, both currently studying aerospace engineering.
