SEWE.COM

WELCOME In 2017, we introduced our first art catalog, featuring works from select SEWE artists – “The Black Book”, as some referred to it. It was overwhelmingly successful for SEWE, artists and collectors. With that in mind, we have decided to make the SEWE Art Book an annual publication. Since its inception in 1983, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has quickly become one of the largest displays of original wildlife and sporting art in the country. Throughout nearly four decades, SEWE has boasted a rich history and proudly named artists such as John Seerey-Lester, Julie Jeppsen, Nancy Howe, Stefan Savides and Sandy Scott among other talents as Featured Artists. From traditional wildlife paintings and sculptures to abstract interpretations of plein air landscapes to North American and African big game, SEWE’s diverse collection is unsurpassed in the genre. SEWE is unique in our focus on the relationship between artists and collectors; if you have attended the Exposition and walked around the Fine Art Gallery you have no doubt felt the energy and excitement for the art that SEWE embodies. It is with great pride that we introduce the 2018 SEWE Art Book. The works featured are available for purchase and the artists included will be present during the Exposition. We invite you to become a part of the rich history of SEWE and join us for the 36th annual celebration of wildlife and sporting art. Sincerely,

Jimmy Huggins President, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition

Kathryn Mapes Turner

2018

2018 FEATURED ARTIST

The artwork of Kathryn Mapes Turner has unfolded from the mountain valley of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. As a daughter of the Northern Rockies, she was born and raised on the Triangle X Ranch in Grand Teton National Park. She grew up riding the trails of the valley, learning wilderness lore and gaining an eye for landscape. The happy synergy of a receptive spirit and a place of magnificent beauty set the course for her life.

Turner believes growing up in Grand Teton National Park gave her an intimate appreciation for art. She now travels all over the world to paint. With watercolors and oil paints, Turner responds with visual contemplations of beauty in hopes of sharing this love of the sublime with others through her work. She believes the small beauties we encounter in life awaken something in all of us.

Having been passionate about painting since childhood, Turner began studying art in her teens from noted American painters. She attended the University of Notre Dame, majoring in Studio Arts and spent an influential semester in Rome, Italy. She then studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and earned a Master’s degree from the University of Virginia.

“My passion for depicting wildlife is rooted in deep appreciation for their magnificence. Wildlife species are mesmerizing, compelling and fill me with a sense of wonder. I hope my artwork can instill that same appreciation and inspiration for others,” Turner says.

Turner is now an award winning artist nationally recognized with top honors from the American Impressionist Society and the National Academy of Equine Art. Her work has been exhibited in the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Charlie Russell Museum, The Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum.

The 2018 Featured Painting, Unbridled, depicts the wild horses that live in the wide-open spaces of the West. “In the high desert plains of my native Wyoming, they live as mustangs, without domestication or fences,” said Turner. “Their range is as vast as the distant horizon line. In this image, I wanted to capture this wild freedom and the spirit of the American West.”

Joseph H. Sulkowski 2018 GUEST ARTIST

Joseph H. Sulkowski knew from the age of five that he would be an artist. His early skills in drawing and painting enabled him to begin a path toward fulfilling his passion. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the oldest art school in the U.S. (founded in 1809). After, he met his greatest influence and mentor, Frank Mason, the foremost authority on the principles and techniques of the Old Masters at the Art Students League of New York. Sulkowski served as an apprentice to Mason from 19741979, learning the traditional principles of painting in the 17th century Flemish, Dutch and Italian techniques. He also learned how to prepare his paints, mediums and oils using recipes developed in the studios of Rubens and Rembrandt. Sulkowski refers to his style of painting as “poetic realism”, an interpretive form inspired by the natural world. He values his freedom to view the world as a poetic vision and then to express that vision in rich impastos and luminous transparent shadows on canvas.

His attention is continually drawn to the animals, figures and landscape of the sporting life. His love for sporting dogs, terriers and foxhounds inform many of his most illustrious canvases. At the same time, he is inspired by the companionship of “man’s best friend”, the feeling of which is expressed in his privately commissioned pet portraits. Sulkowski’s trips to places afield, from the quail hunting plantations of south Georgia to the grouse moors of the Scottish Highlands, continue to inspire his work. He often returns to one of his favorite subjects, the horse, to capture its grace and beauty. Sulkowski’s work is represented in public and private collections worldwide. His two murals of Saudi Arabian history reside in the King Abdul Aziz Museum in Saudi Arabia. Other collectors include Rolex and the Duke of Bedford, to name a few. He has received numerous awards including the AAPL Grand National Award, among others. Sulkowski lives in Franklin, Tennessee with his artist wife, Elizabeth Brandon.
