WELCOME It is a great honor to release the third edition of the SEWE Art Book. This publication has gained momentum since first released in 2017 and each edition is a beautiful collaboration between the artist and what has become the premier wildlife art show in the Southeast. Since its inception in 1983, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition quickly became one of the largest displays of original wildlife and sporting art in the country. During our 37th annual event, we will welcome Featured Artist Lou Pasqua alongside Guest Artists Walter Matia and Sandy Scott. Through nearly four decades, SEWE has boasted a rich history and proudly named artists such as John Banovich, Brett Smith, Lindsay Scott, and Kathryn Turner among other talents as Featured Artists. SEWE is proud to represent a juried selection of the most distinguished wildlife and nature artists in the genre.

2019
Lou Pasqua
2019 FEATURED ARTIST Lou Pasqua aspired to be a wildlife artist from the age of six. At the age of forty, after an education in graphic design and twenty years working in graphic arts, he returned to his original goal. Pasqua was inspired by and followed the work of Carl Runguis, Bob Kuhn, and Ken Carlson. He also discovered Richard Schmid and David Leffel. He researched, studied and practiced various painting techniques on his own and then applied his natural talent to his favorite pastime; the outdoors. Setting his sights on the masters, Pasqua was quickly represented in an esteemed gallery where his paintings were placed alongside the works of Bob Kuhn and Ken Carlson. A lifelong sportsman and subscriber to multiple outdoor magazines, Pasqua was always drawn to images of dogs
in the field. He focused initially on sporting dogs because the reference was readily available. His dog paintings were quickly accepted by major galleries and well respected art critics. Pasqua then expanded to wildlife and, most recently, big game animals. Pasquaβs work has appeared on the covers of Grayβs Sporting Journal, The Upland Almanac, The Pointing Dog Journal, Texas Outdoors Journal, Retriever Journal, Field Trial Magazine, Canine Images, The Ruffed Grouse Society Magazine and Quail Unlimited. Images of his work have also appeared in Wildlife Art, Sporting Classics, and The Washingtonian. Pasqua resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his wife. They have two sons, a daughter-in-law and a grandson.

Walter Matia 2019 GUEST ARTIST
Walter Matia was educated at Williams College in Massachusetts, where he earned degrees in Biology and Art Design. Much of his training was attained during a long apprenticeship in the Exhibits Department of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. After leaving the Cleveland Museum, Walter worked for eleven years with the Nature Conservancy, a national non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of endangered species and unique habitats. He served as the organizationβs vice president in charge of land management. He began casting bronze sculptures in 1980. Initially he concentrated on bird life, over the years he has worked on sporting dogs and other mammals. In 1987 he began a series of large fountain and garden pieces. In 1989 the Blair House Restoration Committee placed one of his fountains in the formal garden of the United States Presidentβs Guest House. To complement the fountain, Walter produced a bronze wall frieze for the Blair House in 1992. His works have been exhibited in one man shows at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. He is regular participant of the Society of Animal Artists, National Sculpture Society,
Masters of the American West, Coors Western Art and the Prix de West Invitational. Walter is a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society, a Master Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists and a Master Wildlife Artist at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. He has received the National Sculpture Society Gold Medal Award, the Bronze Medal Award Pietro & Alfriedo Montana Memorial Prize, the Society of Animal Artists Leo J. Meiselman Award, the Prix de West Fraser Sculpture Award, the Masters of the American West, Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation Sculpture Award and James R Parker Trustee Purchase Award. His sculptures have toured with various shows to dozens of museums both in the United States and abroad. Major commissions include: the Wichita Kansas Botanical Gardens (Wichita, KS), Benson Park Sculpture Gardens (Loveland, CO), American University (Washington, DC), Deerwood Office Park ( Jacksonville, FL), National Museum of Wildlife Art ( Jackson Hole, WY), Merrill Lynch corporate regional offices, NFL Houston Texans Reliant Stadium (Houston, TX), Cleveland Museum of Natural History (Cleveland, OH), The Fried Farm (Crozet, VA), the Bird Dog Hall of Fame (Grand Junction, TN) and Gonzaga College High School (Washington, DC).

Sandy Scott 2019 GUEST ARTIST
Sandy Scott received her formal art training at the Kansas City Art Institute and later worked as an animation background artist for the motion picture industry. She turned her attention to etchings and printmaking in the 1970s and to sculpture in the 1980s. Born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1943 and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she is now headquartered in Lander, Wyoming near the foundry that casts her bronzes. Scott maintains studios on Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada and in the mountains of northern Colorado. Surrounded by mountains, lakes and streams, she is an avid outdoorswoman who loves to hunt and fish. Scott believes wildlife artists should be in the field to accurately present their subject to the viewer. Her work is authentic as she has experienced and lived what she depicts in her pieces. A lifelong interest in aviation has been invaluable to Scottβs work as an artist. A licensed pilot for almost 50 years, she says, βI believe my knowledge of aerodynamics has been helpful in achieving the illusion
of movement in my bird sculptures.β Her knowledge of aerodynamics was particularly evident in Mallard Duet, a sold-out sculpture that won the Ellen P. Speyer Award at the National Academy of Design in New York. This sculpture is in the permanent collection of Brookgreen Gardens and the National Museum of Wildlife Art. When asked what influenced her work most she replies, βFirst was the time I spent at the Kansas City Art Institute, it opened my eyes to the fundamentals of art and imparted a lifelong interest and love of art history; second was my trip to the north country and Lake of the Woods when I was a kid, it introduced me to what would become a never ending source and inspiration; third has been teaching workshops: teaching is an ongoing discipline β I continue to learn through teaching.β Sandy participates in annual juried exhibitions, is on the teaching staff at several art institutions, and continues to receive numerous prestigious awards.
