Welcome

to SEWE 2020

Dear Friends of SEWE,

Welcome to Charleston and the 38th Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. We have worked diligently and eagerly awaited the assembly of artists, exhibitors, and attendees from across the United States for this special weekend of celebrating wildlife art and the sporting lifestyle. SEWE is as important today as it has ever been, and the multifaceted mission of the organization is vitally important on many fronts. The effects on the genre of wildlife art, the scores of conservation organizations represented, and the economic impact throughout the region cannot be overstated. The changes we make each year are balanced between what we will always be at our core, with how we evolve and remain significant within the realms of art and conservation. We are resolved to be a leader for both, and are able through your steadfast support. We are pleased to welcome Jason Tako (pronounced “take-o”) as the 2020 SEWE Featured Artist. A longtime SEWE artist, we have watched Jason over the years as his work evolved from excellent to extraordinary. When you meet Jason, you will understand how much thought goes into his work and why he has become so soughtafter. We hope that as you peruse the Fine Art Gallery at Charleston Place you find a piece that speaks to you, and discover the magic created in the personal experience between creator and collector. While you are in Charleston, take a moment to visit Waterfront Park in the Town of Mount Pleasant. Here you will find the beginnings of the SEWE Sculpture Initiative. Public sculpture is important for many reasons, not the least of which is the inspiration you see forming in the eyes of our youngest – the future artists and conservationists our society will always need. SEWE is a lifestyle as much as it as an event. Our style is not defined by those offerings within the exhibits, but rather those exhibitors who often find their success by how we live our lives. An American flag from Allegiance Flag Supply flies from my home, and I take my morning coffee on a Landrum table. At my back door hangs a portrait of a loyal companion lost years ago, captured perfectly in a painting by Peggy Watkins. Most of you have similar pieces in your life, and they band us together through this weekend that celebrates them all. We thank our corporate partners, participants in the SEWE VIP program, and those that strive to ensure public and private funding, so that we can continue to celebrate one of the true special events in the Southeast. Have a wonderful SEWE weekend,

John G. Powell

Welcome from South Carolina Governor

Henry McMaster Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Historic Charleston for the 2020 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is one of the Southeast’s most celebrated events, and one that we are proud to call our own. Some of the most gifted wildlife and nature artists in the world are on hand to greet you in a city known internationally for its hospitality and charm. Over its 38 years, SEWE has had an economic impact that registers in the hundreds of millions of dollars and consistently draws thousands from out of state and across the country to visit the Charleston region. Simultaneously, hundreds of thousands of dollars are generated each year for a wide variety of conservation organizations that have a direct impact on projects within South Carolina. The Palmetto State has a rich history of conservation from the green hills and mountains of our upstate to the vast marsh and rivers of the Lowcountry. South Carolina boasts over 80,000 acres of state parks, and those of you visiting Charleston are within a short drive of Francis Marion National Forest to the north and the wonders of the ACE Basin to the south. Peggy joins me in welcoming you to the 38th Southeastern Wildlife Exposition and in extending our best wishes for a successful and enjoyable weekend for all. We hope that as you celebrate wildlife, nature, and conservation this week you will make plans to return to our great state and experience all that we have to offer. Yours very truly, Henry McMaster

2020 Featured Artist

The Road Less Traveled Available at Auction, 2/13/20

T

he soul of Jason Tako’s artwork has its origins in the wetlands and prairie areas of Minnesota. He spent the summers of his youth fishing at the family cabin and winters wandering through the nearby wooded areas and playing on frozen lakes. During his senior year in high school, Jason put aside his sketchbooks and delved into music. Attending what later became McNally Smith College of Music, he studied bass guitar and jazz music theory and graduated top of his class with honors. He spent the next ten years playing in numerous rock, jazz, and country bands and recorded several albums. Realizing how much he missed the serenity of nature, Jason picked up his sketchbooks again and headed back out into the wetlands of southern Minnesota. After spending several years in solitude sketching from life, Jason plunged himself into studio oil painting all while keeping up his discipline of plein air painting. “I was plein air painting before I ever heard the term or knew of the movement. I only understood that drawing and painting from life was the best way to learn. Heading outdoors long before sunrise, I would spend hours in a duck blind just watching and listening. Those moments are with me to this day,” Jason says.

28

Jason Tako Fine Art Gallery • Charleston Place

FEATURED ARTIST Jason is in the unique category of being one of the few plein air artists who paints animals from life, and one of the few wildlife artists who paints en plein air. “I have always had an interest in history, and during my years of wandering through rural Minnesota I frequently thought about the American Indians; how close they were with nature and the unique privilege they had to live in an unspoiled land. And I’ve always enjoyed drawing the human figure. It finally dawned on me, almost by accident, that this would be a subject I would thoroughly enjoy painting as it combines so many aspects of my interest,” Jason says.

In High Places

Jason currently lives in Pennsylvania with his wife Rebecca and their five children.

The Road Less Traveled is available for auction on February 13 during the SEWE VIP Signature Gala & Sale.

The Center for Birds of Prey Marion Square

Live Presentation

Presented by BP America With ties to the likes of Audubon, Catesby and Bachman, South Carolina enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and, within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated on a 152-acre campus near Charleston, the Centers are dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that affect birds and humans alike.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marks its 27th year in 2018, it is primarily focused in four defined areas:

AVIAN HEALTH The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 600 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365-day / 24-hour basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.

CONSERVATION EDUCATION The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats: on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed

42

enthusiasm for learning – all of which contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public education - exemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.

RESEARCH Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas. The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “citizen science” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.

SC OILED BIRDS TREATMENT FACILITY The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care

available for injured birds of prey and shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast. The Avian Conservation Center/ Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including: Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services. • Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills • Providing medical care to 8000+ injured birds of prey and shorebirds • As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers • Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations • Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate • Contaminant spill preparedness and response The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.

DID YOU KNOW . . . ? Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 600 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year. Visit the Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square to learn more.

The Orianne Society MARION SQUARE The Orianne Society will teach attendees why and how it promotes the conservation of reptiles, amphibians and game species (such as quail, turkey and deer) at the Marion Square arena. The Orianne Society is the global organization dedicated to conserving some of the most intriguing and remarkable animals on the planet – reptiles and amphibians. One of the ways it conserves these species is by protecting and restoring habitat – the same habitat and land management methods used to promote species like bobwhite quail, wild turkey and whitetail deer.

For example, when The Orianne Society applies prescribed fire to maintain healthy tracts of longleaf pine, restores native understory vegetation, or rehabilitates degraded riparian areas – it isn’t just benefiting reptiles and amphibians. Join The Orianne Society to learn more about our conservation efforts and how it encompasses promoting the conservation of reptiles and amphibians, along with many game species. This will be an informative presentation with live reptiles, including the Eastern Indigo Snake, Gopher Tortoise, and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.

Sheep & Duck Herding BRITTLEBANK PARK

Back by popular demand, Windy Knolls Farm owner and master trainer, Bill Coburn, will showcase the fascinating world of herding instinctive to the Border Collie breed. For 23 years Bill Coburn has been training and working with Border Collies. When he purchased his first dog he was advised to get a trained dog, but as Bill put it, “I was too hardheaded to do that.” So, with the help of a neighbor he trained his first dog on his own and the rest is history. Bill and his dogs have won many competitions

throughout the years, even one competition in Georgia where he could not communicate by voice commands. All of Mr. Coburn’s dogs spend their days working sheep on Windy Knolls Farm in Laurens, South Carolina. Here’s your chance to see them do what they were born to do in person. Watch his collies artfully muster sheep and ducks through various obstacles with only a whistle and a few commands throughout SEWE weekend.

Special thanks to Brookgreen Gardens and O.L. Thompson Companies

SEWE SCULPTURE INITIATIVE

I

n May of 2019, the first seeds were planted in the Town of Mount Pleasant for a sculpture exhibit with plans to extend throughout the region. The SEWE sculpture exhibit at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park is meant to be a cultural experience, as well as the beginning of what will become a trail throughout the Lowcountry. The sculptures of animals indigenous to the region could not have a more appropriate backdrop than the waters and marshes of the Cooper River. Teeming with wildlife, the Cooper’s tidal waters are a reminder of the rich habitat of our region and the importance of conservation and sustainability. Public sculpture is an important part of any community, providing access to art for all, especially youth and underserved. As has been proven with these six sculptures, it also provides a place for reflection and inspiration.

90

At the opening of the exhibit, an extremely generous individual purchased and donated to SEWE, the first permanent piece of sculpture for the SEWE Sculpture initiative. HOST AN ARTIST PROGRAM

T

he Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is proud to have launched the Host an Artist Program four years ago. With support from Hyatt Place + Hyatt House Charleston/Historic District and individual donors, SEWE is now able to further support the artists who travel from great distances to be in Charleston each February for the event. Charleston has long supported the arts, and careers have launched born through SEWE over the last 38 years. Collectors and wildlife art enthusiasts gather here every February to see new work by acclaimed artists as well as new talent that is just being discovered. As the popularity of this event and the city has grown, so too have the costs for artists. With contributions from both individuals and businesses, SEWE will offset some of these expenses beginning with downtown lodging. Artists will receive greatly reduced room rates on upper King Street through the generosity of at the Hyatt Place + Hyatt House Charleston/Historic District and individual contributions. To host an artist, individuals or businesses may donate $150. Donations are accepted throughout the close of the show.

South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp CHARLESTON CO. LIBRARY

E

ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2019-2020 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited. The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 700,000 students in South Carolina.

and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation. In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it competed with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2019-2020 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts. SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.

The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In 2019, nearly 200 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling

LIBRARY Sponsored by Dominion Energy SEWE would like to thank all of the students and teachers who participated in our 2020 Kids for Conservation (KFC) arts competition. Yet again, the judges were impressed with the talent and creativity of the Tri-County students. The goal of SEWE’s KFC program is to promote wildlife and environmental conservation awareness in our youth in hopes they grow into conservationminded adults. Sponsored by Dominion Energy, the competition is open to public, private, and home schooled students in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. Poster, photography and poetry entries will be on display at the Main Branch of the Charleston County Library on Calhoun Street during SEWE and KFC posters will be available for purchase ($1). Also at the Library, birdhouses created by Tri-County high school students will be on exhibit during the month of February.

An accident of Mother Nature Thought so little of but so feared. An environmental misfortune so pure From the second it appears The synonym of anxiety and dread. So close but so far. A cyclone swirling in your head Trapping close to you like tar.

1st

A tongue o flight splits the ground Smelling the most doubt and despair. A rattlesnake’s thunder vibrates all sounds Leaving its empty heart open to tear. The world has snapped and all is lost. You surrender for it has played a royal flush. The universe now cold with frost Bows its rearing head to bitter dark, now colder than winters touch. But when those grey clouds part goodbye A new hope starts from an ember. A brilliant white light pools up the sky Returning the world you once remembered.

The Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation The Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation, a Charleston, SC-based charitable foundation, was created by the long-time Charleston residents as a means to sustain the secular and Jewish values that the Yaschiks embraced in their lifetimes. Sylvia and Henry Yaschik were grateful for the opportunities afforded them and the Foundation became the vehicle for providing opportunities to others. Their legacy of Since 1948. charity and philanthropy continues in their absence.
