Welcome to SEWE 2018 Welcome to Charleston and the 36th annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition as this city once again roars to life for a three-day celebration of wildlife art and the sporting life. SEWE serves as a reunion for many of us. It is a chance to celebrate a part of who we are, and encourage another generation to continue traditions that have bonded many of us together. There is so much to be discovered as you make your way through the weekend that we hope you can see it all. The Fine Art Gallery at Charleston Place will host one of the largest curated displays of original wildlife and nature art available in the country. I am honored to welcome Kathryn Mapes Turner as the 2018 SEWE Featured Artist. The SEWE staff has had the pleasure of working with Kathryn both in Charleston and in Jackson, Wyoming, her home and source of so much inspiration. You will be captivated by her body of work. Also joining us this year is Guest Artist Joseph Sulkowski, whose exceptional sporting and wildlife art display should be a destination for all attendees. Please take the time to introduce yourself to all of the incredible painters and sculptors behind the show. We hope you find an original work of art to treasure along with the experience. We once again welcome our friend Jack Hanna to Charleston, who will perform three shows at the Gaillard Center. Busch Wildlife Sanctuary will also be on stage during the weekend, and you may never know where else they will pop up. The Gaillard Center is a hub of activity with live animal presentations, the SEWE Marketplace with more than 75 exhibitors, and a display of work and live discussion with first time guest Jeff Foxworthy. Our friends from The Center for Birds of Prey will be in Marion Square along with The Orianne Society with live performances that are both educational and entertaining. Also be sure to make your way to Birttlebank Park to see dogs that fly, swim, retrieve, and, new this year—herd. We are ever mindful that SEWE would not be possible without the support of our loyal attendees, Corporate Partners and Benefactors, and funding from public and private grants. We look forward to a wonderful weekend with old friends, and making new ones. As you make your way through Charleston, you will realize that our city is not just a beautiful backdrop for one of the nation’s greatest events, but part of the experience. Warmest Regards,
John G. Powell

Kathryn Mapes Turner
T
he artwork of Kathryn Mapes Turner has unfolded from the mountain valley of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. As a daughter of the Northern Rockies, she was born and raised on the Triangle X Ranch in Grand Teton National Park. She grew up riding the trails of the valley, learning wilderness lore and gaining an eye for landscape. The happy synergy of a receptive spirit and a place of magnificent beauty set the course for her life. Having been passionate about painting since childhood, Turner began studying art in her teens from noted American painters. She attended the University of Notre Dame, majoring in Studio Arts and spent an influential semester in Rome, Italy. She then studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and earned a Master’s degree from the University of Virginia.

FEATURED ARTIST Turner is now an award winning artist nationally recognized with top honors from the American Impressionist Society and the National Academy of Equine Art. Her work has been exhibited in the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Charlie Russell Museum, The Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Turner believes growing up in Grand Teton National Park gave her an intimate appreciation for art. She now travels all over the world to paint. With watercolors and oil paints, Turner responds with visual contemplations of beauty in hopes of sharing this love of the sublime with others through her work. She believes the small beauties we encounter in life awaken something in all of us.
The Gift of Nature
“My passion for depicting wildlife is rooted in deep appreciation for their magnificence. Wildlife species are mesmerizing, compelling and fill me with a sense of wonder. I hope my artwork can instill that same appreciation and inspiration for others,” Turner says. The 2018 Featured Painting, Unbridled, depicts the wild horses that live in the wide-open spaces of the West. “In the high desert plains of my native Wyoming, they live as mustangs, without domestication or fences,” said Turner. “Their range is as vast as the distant horizon line. In this image, I wanted to capture this wild freedom and the spirit of the American West.” Unbridled is available for auction at February 15.

Joseph Sulkowski Fine Art Gallery • Charleston Place
GUEST ARTIST
Joseph H. Sulkowski 2018 Guest Artist
J
oseph H. Sulkowski knew from the age of five that he would be an artist. His early skills in drawing and painting enabled him to begin a path toward fulfilling his passion. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the oldest art school in the U.S. (founded in 1809). After, he met his greatest influence and mentor, Frank Mason, the foremost authority on the principles and techniques of the Old Masters at the Art Students League of New York. Sulkowski served as an apprentice to Mason from 1974-1979, learning the traditional principles of painting in the 17th century Flemish, Dutch and Italian techniques. He also learned how to prepare his paints, mediums and oils using recipes developed in the studios of Rubens and Rembrandt. Sulkowski refers to his style of painting as “poetic realism”, an interpretive form inspired by the natural world. He values his freedom to view the world as a poetic vision and then to express that vision in rich impastos and luminous transparent shadows on canvas.
His attention is continually drawn to the animals, figures and landscape of the sporting life. His love for sporting dogs, terriers and foxhounds inform many of his most illustrious canvases. At the same time, he is inspired by the companionship of “man’s best friend”, the feeling of which is expressed in his privately commissioned pet portraits. Sulkowski’s trips to places afield, from the quail hunting plantations of south Georgia to the grouse moors of the Scottish Highlands, continue to inspire his work. He often returns to one of his favorite subjects, the horse, to capture its grace and beauty. Sulkowski’s work is represented in public and private collections worldwide. His two murals of Saudi Arabian history reside in the King Abdul Aziz Museum in Saudi Arabia. Other collectors include Rolex and the Duke of Bedford, to name a few. He has received numerous awards including the AAPL Grand National Award, among others. Sulkowski lives in Franklin, Tennessee with his wife, artist Elizabeth Brandon.

The presentation will focus on the natural history of the animals while discussing ecology, conservation, endangered species and urban wildlife. Carolina enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and, within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated on a 152-acre campus near Charleston, the Centers are dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that affect birds and humans alike.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marks its 27th year in 2018, it is primarily focused in four defined areas:
AVIAN HEALTH The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 600 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365-day / 24-hour basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.
CONSERVATION EDUCATION The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats: on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed
40
enthusiasm for learning – all of which contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public education - exemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.
RESEARCH Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas. The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “citizen science” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.
SC OILED BIRDS TREATMENT FACILITY The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care

available for injured birds of prey and shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast. The Avian Conservation Center/Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including: Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services. • Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills • Providing medical care to 8000+ injured birds of prey and shorebirds • As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers • Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations • Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate • Contaminant spill preparedness and response The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.
DID YOU KNOW . . . ? Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 600 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year. Visit the Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square to learn more.

he Orianne Society will teach attendees why and how it promotes the conservation of reptiles, amphibians and game species (such as quail, turkey and deer) at the Marion Square arena. The Orianne Society is the global organization dedicated to conserving some of the most intriguing and remarkable animals on the planet – reptiles and amphibians. One of the ways it conserves these species is by protecting and restoring habitat – the same habitat and same land management methods used to promote species like bobwhite quail, wild turkey and whitetail deer. For example, when The Orianne Society applies prescribed fire to maintain healthy tracts of longleaf pine, restores native understory vegetation, or rehabilitate degraded riparian areas – it isn’t just benefiting reptiles and amphibians. Join The Orianne Society to learn more about our conservation efforts and how it encompasses promoting the conservation of reptiles and amphibians, along with many game species. This will be an informative presentation with live reptiles, including the Eastern Indigo Snake, Gopher Tortoise, and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.

sheep & duck herding Brittlebank Park New this year, join Windy Knolls Farm owner and master trainer, Bill Coburn, as he showcases the fascinating world of herding instinctive to the Border Collie breed. For 22 years Bill Coburn has been training and working with Border Collies. When he purchased his first dog he was advised to get a trained dog, but as Bill put it, “I was too hard-headed to do that.” So, with the help of a neighbor he trained his first dog on his own and the rest is history. Bill and his dogs have won many competitions throughout the years, even one competition in Georgia where he could not communicate by voice commands. All of Mr. Coburn’s dogs spend their days working sheep on Windy Knolls Farm in Laurens, South Carolina. Here’s your chance to see them do what they were born to do in person. Watch his collies artfully muster sheep and ducks through various obstacles with only a whistle and a few commands throughout SEWE weekend.

SEWE ART WEEK OCTOBER 2-6, 2017
E
ducation is a cornerstone of SEWE’s mission, and the inaugural SEWE Art Week committed an entire week to highlighting artists from around the world’s passion for the wild. SEWE Art Week kicked off October 2-6, 2017 as an all-encompassing way to teach students, both across the country and internationally, the importance and beauty of wildlife and nature art. For the past three decades, SEWE has been advancing its mission of promoting wildlife and nature conservation. In recent years, SEWE has stepped outside of its weekend event and become more active in schools through two educational programs – Kids for Conservation and the South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp. SEWE Art Week is now the third educational program that furthers that end through linking artists with youth and educating the next generation of conservationists. SEWE artists from California to Georgia to Kenya engaged with schools in their local communities and shared the message of why the genre of wildlife art is so important. Seven artists committed to partake in SEWE Art Week, where they shared their talents with students.
PARTICIPATING SEWE ARTISTS INCLUDED: Peter Blackwell, Kenya Tim Donovan, Lovettsville, Virginia Lita Gatlin, Charlotte, North Carolina Patricia A. Griffin, East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania Jan Perkins, Athens, Georgia Jen Starwalt, Hermosa Beach, California Ken Wallin, Saint Simons, Georgia

HOST AN ARTIST PROGRAM
T
he Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is proud to have launched the Host an Artist Program three years ago. With support from Hyatt Place + Hyatt House Charleston/Historic District and individual donors, SEWE is now able to further support the artists who travel from great distances to be in Charleston each February for its event. Charleston has long supported the arts, and careers have been born through SEWE over the last 36 years. Collectors and wildlife art enthusiasts gather here every February to see new work by acclaimed artists as well as new talent that is just being discovered. As the popularity of this event and the city has grown, so too have the costs for artists. With contributions from both individuals and businesses, SEWE will offset some of these expenses beginning with downtown lodging. Artists will receive greatly reduced room rates on upper King Street through the generosity of at the Hyatt Place + Hyatt House Charleston/Historic District and individual contributions. To host an artist, individuals or businesses may donate $150. Donations are accepted throughout the close of the show.

GA Wildlife Artists in SEWE Southeastern Wildlife Exposition
|
JANUARY 9 - MARCH 11, 2018 Each January, Booth Western Art Museum highlights the work of Georgia artists whose artwork relates to the Museum’s mission, by highlighting them in an exhibition. After attending the 2017 Southern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE), Booth Museum Executive Director Seth Hopkins proposed the idea of a SEWE exhibition at the Booth featuring Georgia artists. SEWE Artist Curator Natalie Henderson was delighted to partner with the Booth. We are excited to exhibit the work of not just one, but thirteen Georgia Wildlife Artists.

Wildlife art is one of the most recognized and popular subjects in art because it depicts the universal theme of the natural world and its wildlife. ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2018 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited. The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 710,000 students in South Carolina.
paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation. In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it will compete with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2018-2019 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts. SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.
The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In January 2018, nearly 200 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling and biologically accurate drawings or

EWE would like to thank all of the students and teachers who participated in our 2018 Kids for Conservation (KFC) arts competition. Yet again, the judges were impressed with the talent and creativity of the Tri-County students. The goal of SEWE’s KFC program is to promote wildlife and environmental conservation awareness in our youth in hopes they grow into conservationminded adults. Sponsored by SCANA, the competition is open to public, private, and home schooled students in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. Poster, photography and poetry entries will be on display at the Main Branch of the Charleston County Library on Calhoun Street during SEWE and KFC posters will be available for purchase ($1). Also at the Library, birdhouses created by Tri-County high school students will be on exhibit during the month of February. Congratulations to the 2018 KFC Winners.

1st What Nature Means to You By: Brooke Newman Laing Middle School, 7th Grade The blowing of the breeze, With the swaying of the trees, Makes it seem as if reality isn’t there. But what does nature sound like you may ask, Is it the wolves howling at eight, The foxes looking to mate, Or the pitter patter of rain on the window, When you’re in a beautiful state.

How does nature make you feel, Is it happy? Is it sad? Or are you bundled up with feelings, That make you really glad. Whatever nature means to you, Whatever your heart desires, Just remember it is always there, Like an everlasting fire.

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) has been bringing together art collectors and wildlife enthusiasts for the past 36 years. Throughout history, SEWE has remained true to its roots. Our values of honoring wildlife and nature are ingrained in the framework of the event, much like paint on a canvas. Join us in February where we applaud the works of world-renowned painters, sculptors, artisans and entertainers. Together, let’s celebrate the art of tradition.
