Welcome to SEWE 2013

W

elcome to the 31st annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. With thousands of visitors from over 40 states and numerous foreign countries, Charleston once again roars to life for a three day celebration of wildlife art and the sporting life. SEWE serves as a reunion for many of us. It is a chance to celebrate a part of who we are, and encourage another generation to continue traditions that have bonded many of us together. Whatever your passion or outdoor pursuit, you can find a piece of it here. For those that are visiting for the first time, you may not understand what connects a piece of fine art, a raptor soaring through downtown, or dogs from across the country diving into a tank of ice cold water. But I can assure you that after a few days at SEWE you will know, and hopefully join us to celebrate year after year. The Grand Ballroom at Charleston Place will again host one of the finest displays of original wildlife and nature art available in the nation. Take the time to introduce yourself to the incredible artists behind SEWE. You will not want to miss the talent in action during Friday’s Quick-Draw and auction in the Charleston Place Hotel – and be sure to stay around for a “duet” finale. In addition, our newest exhibit, titled 99 Bottles of Art, will be located just outside the main ballroom. We hope you find an original work of art to cherish along with the experience. For the second year in a row, SEWE proudly celebrates the art of the decoy. Due in part to an exhibit at the Charleston Marriott featuring dealers and collectors, as well as the auction of 200 plus investment quality decoys from Guyette Schmidt & Deeter, decoys have become an exciting renewed facet of the SEWE weekend. Another remarkable collection of decoys will be on display within the beautiful Aiken-Rhett House Museum. The Allure of the Decoy: Masterworks from the Collection of Alan and Elaine Haid, Presented by Historic Charleston Foundation is a one of a kind showcase unparalleled in both quality pieces and the historic Charleston setting. As many of you know, the Gaillard Auditorium, our largest exhibit site and performance hall, began a renovation process in late 2012. When complete, the new space will be one of the finest exhibit areas for arts and events in the Southeast. Exhibitors formally housed in the Gaillard Auditorium can now be found at the Francis Marion Hotel and under the main tent in Marion Square. Reproductions are available alongside the photographers in the Embassy Suites Hotel. Live presentations by Julie Scardina, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, and Jim and Jamie Dutcher of Living With Wolves will now be enjoyed in the Charleston Music Hall. Within these pages and those of your brochure you will find all of our exhibit sites and a little of what is offered at each location. We hope you have the time to see it all. As always, SEWE would not be possible without the support of our loyal attendees, Corporate Partners and Benefactors, and funding from public and private grants. We look forward to a wonderful weekend with old friends, and making new ones. Warmest Regards,

John G. Powell Executive Director

2013 Featured Artist | Jay Kemp FEATURED PAINTER

Jay Kemp

has vivid memories of his first SEWE experience – at age 21 he attended specifically to see artist Carl Brenders. Kemp aspired to one day exhibit in the show never imagining he would be the 2013 Featured Artist only 25 years later. After only twenty years as a professional artist, many have said that Kemp’s artistic mastery far exceeds his years; that is apparent upon first glance at his fastidious paintings rich with detail. With each painting, Kemp carefully plans every element, recreating momentary images through hours of painstaking work to produce incredibly realistic still life shots one could easily mistake for a photograph. “I strive

to capture those images that pass quickly in our lives, leaving a fleeting yet memorable impression.” A Georgia native, Kemp was a collegiate baseball player and graduate of North Georgia College. A hunter and outdoorsman, Kemp paints subjects he knows best and enjoys most – wildlife, nature and the outdoors. Although he may use dozens of reference materials for a single painting, Kemp considers personal experience his most important resource and draws from memories and time spent outdoors to create his realistic works. While many in the field have recognized his talent, the most significant to Kemp may be the words of fellow artist and former Featured Artist, Carl Brenders. “Artists, writers, and poets have always had good relationships and admiration towards each other. This surely is the case with wildlife artists; this immediately makes me think of Jay Kemp, who might be, in my eyes, one of the greatest of today. Of all wildlife art that I have seen in my 35 year career, his big painting of a bugling elk is the only one that brought tears to my eyes. What an emotion when one stands in front of such a painting. It was not a painting…it was the elk itself. One must be a hell of an artist to realize such a piece. Jay’s work is outstanding; he is my favorite of the new generation. He will keep wildlife art alive. Thank

2013 Featured Sculptor | Pete Zaluzec FEATURED SCULPTOR

Pete Zaluzec

, Featured Sculptor, embodies dynamic talents and is gracing the 2013 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition with an incredible display of three dimensional wildlife art he renders in river stone and bronze. Ever hands-on, Zaluzec photographs his subjects in their natural habitat, meticulously handpicks each stone and pours his own bronze using the casting expertise of his friend and fellow sculptor, Don Rambadt. The flawlessness of his work is attributed to his father – a craftsman on the side whose creative designs he admired as a child. “When I was helping him along, everything would have to be right on the money. That was a big influence on me, and today the things I do are sometimes overthe-top in terms of accuracy and perfection.” Zaluzec received his B.F.A from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1986. Following graduation he veered away

from the arts and took an atypical path of cutting down trees for pulpwood before returning to his gift of craftsmanship. Once back in the arts, he began carving highly detailed lifelike birds winning him multiple awards including “Best in World” for three years in decorative miniature wood carving from the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art’s World Championship Carving Competition. His work has been selected eleven times for the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s

FEATURED SCULPTOR “Birds in Art” and he has pieces in their permanent collection. In addition to his fulltime career as an artist, Zaluzec still continues his work as a custom architectural woodworker. With talent and creativity ranging beyond sculpture, Zaluzec also creates gampi prints which are heavily processed photographs. This involves removing some or all of the background and isolating the subject, making numerous adjustments to lights and darks, white balance, contrast and clarity in order to print it on a natural bark tissue paper which derives from the gampi bush. For a full explanation of this tedious process,

take the time to meet Pete during SEWE weekend…and ask him what is next on his list of endeavors. Zaluzec and Rita, his wife of 31 years, live in Lake Villa, Illinois.

A very popular feature two years ago, Jim and Jamie Dutcher are returning to enchant SEWE attendees with their “Living with Wolves” presentation. The Dutchers lived with a pack of wolves for six years in a tented camp at the edge of Idaho’s Sawtooth Wilderness, listening to them and earning their trust. With extraordinary photography and footage of the Sawtooth Pack, personal observations and thoughtful analysis, the Dutchers will present an engaging story of their experiences living among wolves, and detail the fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking hierarchies found in packs.

ecosystem for wolves, and one that would preclude the clashes with ranchers and encroaching civilization that are threatening the wolf with rapid extinction, “Living With Wolves” is a program that is worth seeing for the sheer beauty of the images and the captivating story of these fascinating animals. The Dutchers will be available after each presentation to sign their recently released book, The Hidden Life of Wolves, which exposes the cultural misconceptions of the wolf.

As the founders of the not-for-profit organization Living with Wolves, Ltd., the Dutchers are dedicated to educational outreach and travel the country to generate a better understanding of the true nature of wolves and their importance to a healthy ecosystem. Jim and Jamie think of the Sawtooth Pack as ambassadors for their wild cousins, and believe it is now up to them to help people make a connection with wolves. They have shared the story of the wolves with millions through their presentations and on “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “Dateline NBC,” “48 Hours” and NPR. Charleston Music Hall FEATURED VENUE The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is proud to introduce the Charleston Music Hall as our newest performance and lecture space for 2013. Through the support of Corporate Partner Bennett Hospitality, SEWE will be able to host larger shows in a convenient and beautiful space nestled between Meeting and King Streets. “It’s a natural fit,” says SEWE Executive Director John Powell. “I have seen many shows at ‘The Hall’ and it’s one of my favorite places downtown. Mike Bennett and the folks at Bennett Hospitality were gracious enough to work with us and we both agreed it was a perfect fit for our larger presentations. A SEWE attendee can easily walk to Charleston Music Hall or the shuttle stop is just outside the building. They can grab a drink or a bite to eat at 39 Rue de Jean, Coast or Virginia’s and then walk a few feet to enjoy one of the presentations. It doesn’t get a whole lot easier, or more enjoyable, than that.” The Charleston Music Hall has served as an entertainment venue since 1995 and has hosted a multitude of Grammy Award-winning music artists, plays, 44

ballets, comedians, and theatrical productions - as well as a nationally televised dance competition. Convenient access to parking, hotels and dining make the Charleston Music Hall an attractive destination for an evening out for both the local crowd and those visiting Charleston for quality entertainment. The Charleston Music Hall is located right next door to an award-winning Hampton Inn and Embassy Suites Hotel as well as three nationally acclaimed restaurants. Downtown Charleston’s most popular shopping destinations and historic attractions are conveniently within walking distance, with three public garages also located within two blocks of the venue. 37 John Street was originally named The Tower Depot, designed by Charleston architect Edward C. Jones and constructed between 1849 and 1850. The Gothic Revival style building previously featured a three-story tower, which projected into John Street and

The Allure of the Decoy: FEATURED EXHIBIT

Masterworks from the Collection of Alan and Elaine Haid, Presented by Historic Charleston Foundation With an excellent eye for beauty and the subtle art of the maker, Alan Haid, an avid waterfowler, and his wife Elaine have spent approximately fifty years acquiring decoys of the most distinguished provenance and form. Focusing on quality, rarity, notable origin, and artful execution, the Haids have acquired one of the most outstanding collections of waterfowl decoys in the nation. The Allure of the Decoy: Masterworks from the Collection of Alan and Elaine Haid, Presented by Historic Charleston Foundation, an exhibition held in conjunction with the 2013 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, will be a showcase of 47 of the finest examples in their private collection. The craft of the decoy and the Haids’ efforts to preserve

this American art form will be highlighted against the backdrop of one of America’s most significant Antebellum properties— the Aiken-Rhett House Museum, c. 1820.

not intended to be decorative objects for the collector’s shelf. Regardless, over time the decoy has become one of the quintessential American art forms. The decoys in the Haid collection include several of the rarest examples of this unique craft and artistic tradition. Created for utilitarian use, decoys were made with a pride of workmanship and talent that elevated the hunter’s tool into an art form that is today greatly sought after and collected. “Our purpose is to acquire the greatest decoys we can,” said Mr. Haid. There is always something wonderful coming up.”

These prized holdings, exhibited by Historic Charleston Foundation, include Originally made to lure migratory waterfowl decoys from the East Coast to the Midwest, crafted by notable artisans such as Harry within the hunter’s range, decoys were 60

V. Shourds (1861-1920), Charles “Shang” Wheeler (1872-1949), the Ward brothers (1895-1984), and the Mason Decoy Factory of Detroit (1896-1924). Among the rarest of American decoys, an early twentieth century, chip carved, sleeping black duck by A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) will be on display. In addition to being an avid collector, Alan Haid is the author of two books devoted to the subject, Decoys of the Mississippi Flyway and Mason Decoys, A Complete Pictorial Guide, co-authored with Russ Goldberger (1993).

verlooking Marion Square and the gateway to a revitalized upper King Street, the Francis Marion has long been a symbol of Charleston and a true partner of SEWE. In 2013, this site will house many of SEWE’s most popular and veteran exhibitors. With the renovations to Gaillard Auditorium underway, knife makers, artisans and craftsman have found a new home in the Carolina Ballroom of the Francis Marion Hotel. Located around the corner from Marion Square, Charleston Music Hall, and Embassy Suites, this exhibit provides attendees with more than a day’s worth of activities in one central area.

On Saturday morning, the Francis Marion will also host a VIP Bluegrass Breakfast, which will be a great way for both Benefactors and Patrons to kick-off their day. With convenient parking available at local area garages and its proximity to two SEWE shuttle stops, this just may be the best place to begin and end your day at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Knife Maker Larry Page said, “I started making knives in 1983 after talking with ver the past 31 years, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition George Herron.” Herron produced has hosted countless artists and Southeastern Wildlife Exposition’s Knife of the Year for 12 years with the help of craftsmen with an impressive array of styles and creative methods. One of the gifted scrimshaw artist Sandra Brady. “He offered to guide me while I learned most enduring and tight-knit groups has consistently been our talented knife the craft. I had always liked knives and thought that being able to make a makers, whose designs are truly works knife would be great. I found that knife of art. Formerly housed in the Gaillard making was a great way to get to meet Auditorium, SEWE knife makers will people and see the country by attending now anchor the Carolina Ballroom of shows.” When Herron passed away in the Francis Marion Hotel. 2007, it was somewhat poetic that the When asked about his SEWE experience honor of producing that single knife for and how he came into the craft, SEWE SEWE each year was passed on to Page.

The Knife of the Year, still bearing the incredible art of Mrs. Brady, is auctioned each year at Thursday night’s Preview Gala. SEWE knife makers represent the many styles – in regards to both form and function – that exist within the craft. “A knife should be chosen to fill the need of the buyer,” says Page. “Some want a hunting knife that will be used for dressing game and camp chores and this is my most popular style. The knife should fit the hand and be comfortable

in use. Like I’ve said many times, if it doesn’t fit like comfortable shoes, you won’t enjoy it. Then there are many people who collect knives for their style and beauty so in this case it is what you find appealing.” Whatever your preferred style, Larry Page and the group of talented knife makers at Francis Marion Hotel will help you find what you are looking for. Please be sure to visit this exhibit early as these unique creations are sought after by collectors and new buyers alike.

Lowcountry Conservation Initiative FEATURED EVENT

Sponsored by BP Foundation The coast of South Carolina is one of the fastest growing regions in the nation, and therefore finds itself confronting increasing growth management issues. The SC Department of Commerce projects that our population will increase by over one million new residents within the next 15 years – an estimate which many believe is on the conservative side. This projected growth promises major changes in our economic base and in the physical demands placed upon our natural resource base. Conservation organizations in the Lowcountry have to date protected a mere 10% of irreplaceable natural, cultural and historic lands. Needless to say, we need to do more. These open lands support our economic sustainability and impact our health. The condition of our natural environment directly affects our drinking water, food sources, air quality, recreational outlets and personal wellbeing. RESOLVING HUMAN CONFLICTS WITH WILDLIFE Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of 70

birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. In 2013, the center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 12,000 volunteer staff hours, anticipates treating over 600 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center. Insight and information gathered from admitting thousands of injured birds over twenty years also serves as a valuable and unique basis for the Center’s broader educational, research and conservation initiatives. The Center reaches in excess of 10,000 students annually and has research partners on national and international levels. The Avian Center also possesses the only permanent oiled bird facility of its kind on the East Coast. As part of the medical center, it maintains oil spill response capability and is designated as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina. PUBLIC-PRIVATE WILDLIFE CORRIDOR PROJECT The mission of the Lowcountry Open Land Trust is to honor the relationship between people and land by protecting unique Lowcountry acreage. The protection and creation of wildlife corridors is at the core of the Land Trust’s mission to preserve the

forests, farms and wetlands that make the Lowcountry unique. Working in partnership with other organizations, we have produced a successful land conservation program in the face of rapid expansion. Our program specifically helps landowners understand the value of protecting these freshwater and woodland ecosystems. The unique natural habitat and cultural landscape of the Cooper River, Francis Marion National Forest and Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge are significant national treasures that anchor a corridor system that benefits wildlife and humans alike. Private land conservation efforts in this project area provide an extensive network of protective wildlife corridors that enhance water quality and contribute to the scenic character of the area. The Land Trust’s 2013 Wildlife Corridor Conservation Program is an expansion of its 5-year effort to proactively create

wildlife areas in the Lowcountry of South Carolina by targeting strategic properties for protection. The goal is to expand and connect contiguous tracts to substantially leverage the conservation value of the whole. Each year the Land Trust continues to build relationships with landowners and enhance partnerships to achieve the program’s goals. In 25 years the work of the Lowcountry Open Land Trust has created a total of 88,040 permanently protected acres on 268 properties. Their goal is to (continued)

ensure 100,000 acres under protection by 2015. Support from the BP Foundation is helping to provide an opportunity to expand this corridor partnership in the Cooper River watershed, the Francis Marion National Forest and Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, with strong ties to the Avian Conservation Center and Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. EDUCATION BY CONSERVATION As partners in this initiative, the Avian Conservation Center and the Lowcountry Open Land Trust share a common vision of educating their neighbors on the benefits of opening life-long connections with rural lands, open spaces and wildlife. As the coastal landscape is shaped by increased development, it is imperative to identify specific areas that function as critical habitat for wildlife diversity. Wild birds serve as excellent indicators of the location, type and scale of vital natural habitat areas. Surveying rural lands to determine the reliance of avian species for breeding, foraging and migration stop-overs helps to effectively identify priorities for land and avian protection. Surveying, analyzing and mapping of these tracts provides a tangible means of interfacing with landowners and others about the need for ongoing land protection initiatives.

The data collected in surveys is also being converted into a unique STEM-based curriculum for science teachers in the Charleston County School District and beyond to utilize in their classrooms. Everyone involved hopes that by encouraging these young students to foster the stewardship ethic, their future conservation efforts will provide long-term preservation of threatened avian species and the natural areas where they thrive.

Visit the Lowcountry Open Land Trust and The Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square and see how they share the common vision of educating our neighbors to open life-long connections with rural lands, open spaces and wildlife.

Established

in 1947, Historic Charleston Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve and protect the historical, architectural and material culture that make up Charleston’s rich and irreplaceable heritage. The Foundation is known for its preservation and advocacy programs including protective covenants and easements; education and outreach; and it is the first

organization in the country to establish a revolving fund to acquire and preserve importantbuildings, a model now replicated in historic communities across the nation. Preservation coupled with education and outreach is at the heart of Historic Charleston Foundation’s mission. This mission is supported through the generosity of preservation-minded donors, the Annual Spring Festival of Houses and Gardens (March 21-April 20, 2013), the Charleston Antiques Show (March 2224, 2013), a licensed products program, and retail shops. In addition, HCF fulfills its educational mission through the interpretation of its collections and two museum sites: the Nathaniel Russell House, c. 1808, and the Aiken-Rhett House, c. 1820.

SEWE would like to thank all of the students and teachers who participated in our 2013 Kids for Conservation (KFC) art competition. Yet again, the judges were impressed with the talent and creativity of Tri-County students. The goal of SEWE’s KFC program is to promote wildlife and environmental conservation awareness in our youth in hopes they grow into conservationminded adults. Sponsored by SCANA, the competition is open to public, private, and home schooled students in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

Poster, photography and poetry entries will be on display at the Main Branch of the Charleston County Library on Calhoun Street during SEWE and KFC posters will be available for purchase ($1). Also at the Library, birdhouses created by TriCounty high school students will be on exhibit during the month of February.

We kill their homes, ignore their moans, expect them at their bests, when we use their woods as desks. Man’s best friend, Nature’s to tend, Ocean’s creations, make up the nations. ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2013 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited. The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being

discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 710,000 students in South Carolina. The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In January 2013, over 300 public, private and homeschooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade

groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation. In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it will compete with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2014 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts. SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.
