WILDLIFE FOR THE ROAD
THE ALL-NEW 2015 JAGUAR F-TYPE COUPE
Welcome
to the 33rd Southeastern Wildlife
Exposition. This yearly migration to the Lowcountry brings together thousands of wildlife art and sporting enthusiasts from over forty states and several foreign countries. For those joining us for the first time, I hope you will come to appreciate why so many flew, drove, and literally hitchhiked through the snow and ice to be with us for SEWE last February. As you make your way to the nine different exhibit sites throughout Charleston, you will realize that our city is not just a beautiful backdrop for one of the nation’s greatest events, but part of the experience. The Grand Ballroom at Charleston Place will host one of the finest displays of original wildlife and nature art available in the country. These artists, including 2015’s Featured Artist Grant Hacking, have been working throughout the year to prepare for this weekend. Please take the time to introduce yourself to the incredible painters, sculptors, and carvers behind the show. Be sure to visit the special The Twelve Days of SEWE Christmas exhibit by Jason Tako highlighting his unique artistic approach that merges history and biology with creativity. Friday’s Quick-Draw and auction as well as Saturday’s Duet and Quintet are yet another excellent opportunity to see these artists in action. We hope you find an original work of art to treasure along with the experience. This year we welcome Richard Wiese, host and executive producer of Born to Explore™, to SEWE for the first time. He will share his love of adventure with audiences Friday and Saturday at Charleston Music Hall. Live presentations from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary and Jim & Jamie Dutcher of Living with Wolves will also be held each day. Please remember that seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Within these pages and those of the brochure you will find all of the other performances and exhibits SEWE has to offer. We hope that you have time to see it all. As always, SEWE would not be possible without the support of our loyal attendees, Corporate Partners and Benefactors, and funding from public and private grants. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this special event possible. Finally, SEWE is entering an exciting period of change over the next several years. With the reintroduction of the Gaillard Center in 2016, we look forward to announcing new opportunities that will enhance the experience for all attendees. Be sure to stay connected with us throughout the year to learn more about these offerings. Have a great time in Charleston. We look forward to a wonderful weekend with old friends, and making new ones. Warmest Regards,
John G. Powell

Grant Hacking 2015 Featured Artist S
outheastern Wildlife Exposition is proud to honor long time SEWE Artist, Grant Hacking, as the 2015 Featured Artist. The New England artist was born and raised in South Africa where he spent the early years of his painting career. Living in an exotic location provided him the opportunity to travel extensively, researching material for his innovative wildlife compositions. At age 25, Hacking moved to the US and began focusing on more localized subject matter. His collection now includes figurative work, architecture, coastal scenes and landscapes, especially those close to his home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

FEATURED ARTIST “Strictly speaking, I do not want to be categorized as either a wildlife painter or a landscapist because what I really paint is nature,” he explains. “I try to give equal time to both genres. When the weather is good, I enjoy painting en plein air, and when the chill winds of winter arrive, I return to my studio where painting my memories of Africa instills a sense of warmth.” This year’s featured painting of a North American bob cat, Scouting the Territory, depicts Hacking’s ability to combine photorealistic detail with an impressionistic feel and bridge the two genres he loves. When asked about his inspiration for the piece, Hacking commented “I was struck by the intensity and grounded strength of such a small cat. Despite his size, I got that same feeling I get when watching a leopard or lion. I composed the painting with a mass of solid rock to reflect the strength of the cat as he confidently scouts his territory for signs of intruders. There is no doubt that this elusive and majestic creature is deserving of being showcased.” Hacking resides in North Conway, New Hampshire with his two daughters.

Living with Wolves
A very popular feature, Jim and Jamie Dutcher are returning to enchant SEWE attendees with their “Living with Wolves” presentation. The Dutchers lived with a pack of wolves for six years in a tented camp at the edge of Idaho’s Sawtooth Wilderness, listening to them and earning their trust. With extraordinary photography and footage of the Sawtooth Pack, personal observations and thoughtful analysis, the Dutchers will present an engaging story of their experiences living among wolves, and detail the fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking hierarchies found in packs. As the founders of the not-for-profit organization Living with Wolves, Ltd., the Dutchers are dedicated to educational outreach and travel the country to generate a better understanding of the true nature of wolves and their importance to a healthy ecosystem. Jim and Jamie think of the Sawtooth Pack as ambassadors for their wild cousins, and believe it is now up to them to help people make a connection with wolves. They have shared the story of the wolves with millions through their presentations and on “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “Dateline NBC,” “48 Hours” and NPR. Calling for the preservation of wild places with contiguous wildlife corridors that allow for a sustainable ecosystem for wolves, and one that would preclude the clashes with ranchers and encroaching civilization that are threatening the wolf with rapid extinction, “Living With Wolves” is a program that is worth seeing for the sheer beauty of the images and the captivating story of these fascinating animals. The Dutchers will be available after each presentation to sign their recently released book, The Hidden Life of Wolves, which exposes the cultural misconceptions of the wolf. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey With ties to the likes of Audubon, Catesby and Bachman, South Carolina enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and, within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated on a 152-acre campus near Charleston, the Centers are dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that affect birds and humans alike. The Center for Birds of Prey (CBP) operates a medical clinic for injured birds of prey and offers on-site and outreach educational programs. They conduct field and laboratory research studies, and participate in and support international conservation issues. Furthermore, CBP staff represents the first line of responders for oiled birds in the

event of a spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Atlantic coast, and work to create awareness of the ecological impacts of a spill and proactive measures available to reduce the likelihood of such an event.
Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 12,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 500 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year.
Visit the Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square to learn more.
Wild birds are among the world’s most illuminating sentinel species. Birds are numerous, conspicuous, diverse, widespread, and particularly sensitive to environmental changes. The ecological status of wild birds directly reflects the condition of the ecosystem and biodiversity as a whole. Environmental issues that impact wild bird populations often have potential human health implications as well. The free flight demonstrations by the dedicated CBP staff are invariably some of the most educational and entertaining of SEWE weekend, and we are most appreciative of their participation.

he Certified South Carolina program was launched several years ago to help provide consumers with the ability to easily identify, find, and buy South Carolina products. Restaurants throughout the state have become partners in the effort, with participating chefs agreeing to prepare menus that include at least 25% Certified South Carolina grown foods and products in season to feature the Fresh on the Menu brand. These chefs recognize the value in supporting local for not only their bottom lines, but also for the difference South Carolina local products and produce make on the taste of their food. Watch more than a dozen of the Lowcountry’s greatest chefs demonstrate how to make some of their favorite recipes with South Carolina grown and produced ingredients. Plus, sample products from the producers, processors and vendors that make up the Certified South Carolina program.

The Twelve Days of SEWE Christmas Charleston Place BALLROOM The Twelve Days of SEWE Christmas is an original art project that arose through the collaboration of SEWE staff and wildlife and landscape artist Jason Tako. He was challenged to create twelve original works based on the popular Christmas song. An excerpt from Jason’s description of the project: “The exhibit consists of twelve paintings that depict each theme in the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” using wildlife as subject matter. The project was a challenge to say the least. While some themes in the song were a natural fit for wildlife, like Seven Swans a Swimming, other themes required much research and creativity. My goal for the project was not to literally describe every theme in the song down to the exact detail, but to find unique and even clever ways of using a critter to describe the theme. The song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is an English Christmas carol that was first published in 1780 in a children’s book called Mirth without Mischief and was titled “The Twelve Days of Christmas” sung at King Pepin’s Ball. At that time it wasn’t set to music and it’s thought to have actually originated in France. Since its publication in 1780, the song has gone through numerous lyrical transitions and variations including “My mother sent to me” and “My true love brought to me.” Other variations include “Seven squabs a swimming, eight hounds a running, nine bears a beating, ten cocks a crowing, eleven lads a-louping,” and “A very pretty peacock upon a pear tree.” Though some of these past variations would have been easier to apply to wildlife art, the modern-day version of the song was used which is almost identical to the original with the exception of “Four Calling Birds” which is talked about in the description of the fourth painting. This is a very unique one-of-a-kind project that we hope you will find enjoyable. Each painting has a description which describes my thought process in creating the painting.” The full description of each painting is on display at The Twelve Days of SEWE Christmas exhibit at Charleston Place Hotel. Each painting is an original on linen, and available by silent auction or may be purchased as a complete set. Jason Tako is a Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists and has received numerous national awards for his work including the Western Art Collector Editor’s Choice Award, Best of Show at Plein Air Camp Hill, the Vanishing Landscape Award and Best Architectural Award at Plein Air Easton, the Evelyn & Peter Haller Distinguished Young Artist Award, and many more. He has been featured in Plein Air Magazine and Western Art Collector Magazine and is represented by prestigious galleries such across the U.S.

he Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is proud to once again partner with Charleston Music Hall for performance and lecture space in 2015. Through the support of Corporate Partner Bennett Hospitality, SEWE is able to continue its live animal shows and presentations while the Gaillard Auditorium continues the renovation process. “The Music Hall is the perfect setting for the three
different presentations we offer ” says SEWE Executive Director John Powell. “Our options are limited with venues that fit our needs, and we are just extremely fortunate that one of the best performances halls fits right into the SEWE footprint. The Hall has enough seating to accommodate large crowds but you don’t lose that connection with the presenter. Mike Bennett has been a longtime supporter of SEWE so we are proud to be able to highlight one of his many great properties.” The Charleston Music Hall has served as an entertainment venue since 1995 and has hosted a multitude of Grammy Award-winning music artists, plays, ballets, comedians, and theatrical productions - as well as a nationally televised dance competition. and dining make the Charleston Music Hall an attractive destination for an evening out for both the local crowd and those visiting Charleston for quality entertainment. The Charleston Music Hall is located right next door to an award-winning Hampton Inn and Embassy Suites Hotel as well as three nationally acclaimed restaurants. Downtown Charleston’s most popular shopping destinations and historic attractions are conveniently within walking distance, with three public garages also located within two blocks of the venue. 37 John Street was originally named The Tower Depot, designed by Charleston architect Edward C. Jones and constructed between 1849 and 1850. The Gothic Revival style building previously featured a three-story tower, which projected into John Street and served as the main entrance for a passenger depot for the South Carolina Railroad. Sadly, the original tower was destroyed in the earthquake of 1886 and subsequently, The Tower Depot became part of the Charleston Bagging & Manufacturing Company’s facility for many years. In 1995, the Bennett Hofford Company facilitated its’ amazing transformation into the exquisite Charleston Music Hall that exists today.

One of many old back alleys weaving through downtown Charleston, concealing within her walls some of Charleston’s best in culinary adventures. Newest to the Hutson Alley scene, Michael’s on the Alley, Vincent Chicco’s and Victor Social Club round out Michael Bennett’s dynastic Holy City Hospitality group of restaurants which includes the original Charleston favorites: 39 Rue de Jean, Coast Bar and Grill and Virginia’s on King. “We’ve got six restaurants on one block, two hotels and another coming,” says Bennett, whose entreprenurial spirit has kept him busy since he was a boy mowing Bennett lawns and renting mopeds in the City Market. Bennett bought the first of many investment properties in 1977 at the age of 21 and did all of the “grunt” work himself. A lifelong resident of the Holy City, Bennett has a deep family heritage that he’s honored hono with the construction of the three new restaurants. The warehouse property Bennett earmarked for his trio of new restaurants was part of a parcel he purchased from the heirs of Vincent Chicco, a local businessman who’d made a name for himself operating the first “blind tigers” during the rough and tumble Prohibition years. “In this day of celebrity owners and chefs, our celebrity is the guest,” notes Bennett. “What we do is for a genuine love of the hospitality business, and for this community.”

Host an Artist Program
T
he Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is proud to have launched the Host an Artist Program in 2015. With support from Fennell Holdings and individual donors, SEWE will now be able to further support artists who travel from great distances to be in Charleston, SC each February. Charleston has long supported the arts, and careers have been born through SEWE over the last 32 years. Collectors and wildlife art enthusiasts gather here every February to see new work by acclaimed artists as well as new talent that is just being discovered. As the popularity of this event and the city has grown, so too have the costs for artists. With contributions from both individuals and businesses SEWE will offset some of these expenses beginning with lodging and local transportation in 2015. Artists will receive greatly reduced room rates through the generosity of the host hotel and individual contributions. To host an artist, individuals or businesses are asked to donate $150. Contributions to the Host an Artist Program may be made at any time during SEWE weekend by visiting the VIP Suite in Charleston Place Hotel.

In memory of John Carroll Doyle 2005 SEWE Featured Artist
John Carroll Doyle was born in Charleston in 1942 and is nationally known for his energetic, light filled paintings of subjects as diverse as blues musicians, b lue m a rlins, a nd blue hydrangeas. Doyle’s career began with his distinctive sportfishing paintings which hang in restaurants around the city of Charleston, have graced the covers of many popular sportsfishing magazines and continue to adorn SEWE t-shirts. Doyle was a beloved SEWE artist and his presence and talent will be missed. To fulfill his wish, the John C. Doyle Gallery will remain open. The John C. ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp.
waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation.
The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2015 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited.
In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it will compete with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2015-2016 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts.
The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 710,000 students in South Carolina.
SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.
The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In January 2015, over 300 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American

Poster, photography and poetry entries will be on display at the Main Branch of the Charleston County Library on Calhoun Street during SEWE and KFC posters will be available for purchase ($1). Also at the Library, birdhouses created by Tri-County high school students will be on exhibit during the month of February. Congratulations to the 2015 KFC Winners.

Wolf By: Elizabeth Warren Amber eyes gleam in the dark of the night, slowly creeping forward though there’s nothing in sight. The sun starts to rise and casts a glistening spell, over the grassland and it looks clear and well. Then a large wolf appears muscles rippling under fur, as his eyes gleam with hunger sharp as a spur. His claws shine and flash in the morning sun, while the frost starts to melt which means spring has begun. His tail sways softly brushing over the dirt, and he nods his head, short and curt. His white pelt is silky like new fallen snow and his tufted ears twitch as if he seems to know, that I am watching staring in awe as the ferocious beast snarls and snaps his maw. He perks up his ears and dips to the ground his belly fur brushing but making no sound. He leaps in the air with a spine chilling yowl, and slams to the ground with a snap and a growl. Now up sits the wolf with limp prey in his jaws, and his fur starts to bristle from his head to his paws. His long muzzle glistens shining scarlet and red while his nose is jet black like a pencils sharp led. He stands up and turns slowly
