Welcome
to SEWE 2019
Welcome to Charleston and the 37th annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. SEWE is the largest three-day celebration of wildlife art and sporting life in the nation. Our beautiful city continues to receive accolades from around the world, a destination loved by its guests and ranked at the top of any list by most any measure. Few visitors are as loyal as fans of SEWE. Much like Charleston, SEWE has grown and evolved, but remains true to those values and experiences that brought you here for the very first time. Regardless of the times, SEWE remains. She comes to life year after year, a stalwart for the City of Charleston, the wildlife art community, and conservation organizations of every size and focus. So much of that is because of you, and we are excited to see you again. The Fine Art Gallery at Charleston Place will host one of the largest curated displays of original wildlife and nature art available in the country. I am honored to welcome Lou Pasqua as the 2019 SEWE Featured Artist. Lou has created a body of work for SEWE that not only harkens back to the sporting roots of the show, but transports the viewer into the field and to a place you feel as if you have been before. In the end, that is what brings so many of us together each February; an understanding of experiences and memories we share from the outdoors that seemingly come alive through canvas, bronze, and wood. SEWE is privileged to welcome Guest Artists Sandy Scott and Walt Matia, whose exceptional sculpture exhibits should be a destination for all attendees. Please take the time to introduce yourself to all of the incredible painters and sculptors behind the show. We hope you find an original work of art to treasure along with the experience. We once again welcome our friend Jeff Corwin to Charleston, who will perform two shows at the Gaillard Center. Busch Wildlife Sanctuary will also be on stage during the weekend, and you never know where else they will pop up. The Gaillard Center is a hub of activity with live animal presentations and the SEWE Marketplace with more than 75 exhibitors. Our friends from The Center for Birds of Prey will be in Marion Square along with The Orianne Society with live performances that are both educational and entertaining. Also be sure to make your way to Brittlebank Park to see dogs that fly, swim, retrieve, herd, and new this year – search and rescue. We are ever mindful that SEWE would not be possible without the support of our loyal attendees, Corporate Partners and Benefactors, and funding from public and private grants. We look forward to a wonderful weekend with old friends, and making new ones. As you make your way through Charleston, you will realize that our city is not just a beautiful backdrop for one of the nation’s greatest events, but part of the experience. Have a wonderful SEWE weekend,
John G. Powell

2019 Featured Artist 24
Little Havoc Available at Auction, 2/14/19
Lou Pasqua aspired to be a wildlife artist from the age of six. At the age of forty, after an education in graphic design and twenty years working in graphic arts, he returned to his original goal.
Pasqua was inspired by and followed the work of Carl Runguis, Bob Kuhn, and Ken Carlson. He also discovered Richard Schmid and David Leffel. He researched, studied and practiced various painting techniques on his own and then applied his natural talent to his favorite pastime; the outdoors. Setting his sights on the masters, Pasqua was quickly represented in an esteemed gallery where his paintings were placed alongside the works of Bob Kuhn and Ken Carlson.
Lou Pasqua Fine Art Gallery • Charleston Place
FEATURED ARTIST A lifelong sportsman and subscriber to multiple outdoor magazines, Pasqua was always drawn to images of dogs in the field. He focused initially on sporting dogs because the reference was readily available. His dog paintings were quickly accepted by major galleries and well respected art critics. Pasqua then expanded to wildlife and, most recently, big game animals. Pasqua’s work has appeared on the covers of Gray’s Sporting Journal, The Upland Almanac, The Pointing Dog Journal, Texas Outdoors Journal, Retriever Journal, Field Trial Magazine, Canine Images, The Ruffed Grouse Society Magazine and Quail Unlimited. Images of his work have also appeared in Wildlife Art, Sporting Classics, and The Washingtonian.
Checking Out
Pasqua resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his wife. They have two sons, a daughter-in-law and a grandson. Little Havoc is available for auction on February 14 during the SEWE VIP Signature Gala & Sale.

Much of his training was attained during a long apprenticeship in the Exhibits Department of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. After leaving the Cleveland Museum, Walter worked for eleven years with the Nature Conservancy, a national non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of endangered species and unique habitats. Initially he concentrated on bird life, over the years he has worked on sporting dogs and other mammals. In 1987 he began a series of large fountain and garden pieces. In 1989 the Blair House Restoration Committee placed one of his fountains in the formal garden of the United States President’s Guest House. To complement the fountain, Walter produced a bronze wall frieze for the Blair House in 1992. His works have been exhibited in one man shows at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. He is regular participant of the Society of Animal Artists, National Sculpture Society, Masters of the American West, Coors Western Art and the Prix de West Invitational. Walter is a Fellow of

GUEST ARTIST
Sandy Scott
2019 Guest Artist Sandy Scott received her formal art training at the Kansas City Art Institute and later worked as an animation background artist for the motion picture industry. She turned her attention to etchings and printmaking in the 1970s and to sculpture in the 1980s. Born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1943 and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she is now headquartered in Lander, Wyoming near the foundry that casts her bronzes. Scott maintains studios on Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada and in the mountains of northern Colorado. Surrounded by mountains, lakes and streams, she is an avid outdoorswoman who loves to hunt and fish. Scott believes wildlife artists should be in the field to accurately present their subject to the viewer. Her work is authentic as she has experienced and lived what she depicts in her pieces. A lifelong interest in aviation has been invaluable to Scott’s work as an artist. A licensed pilot for almost 50 years, she says, “I believe my knowledge of aerodynamics has been helpful in achieving the illusion of movement in my bird sculptures.” Her knowledge of
aerodynamics was particularly evident in Mallard Duet, a soldout sculpture that won the Ellen P. Speyer Award at the National Academy of Design in New York. This sculpture is in the permanent collection of Brookgreen Gardens and the National Museum of Wildlife Art. When asked what influenced her work most she replies, “First was the time I spent at the Kansas City Art Institute, it opened my eyes to the fundamentals of art and imparted a lifelong interest and love of art history; second was my trip to the north country and Lake of the Woods when I was a kid, it introduced me to what would become a never ending source and inspiration; third has been teaching workshops: teaching is an ongoing discipline – I continue to learn through teaching.” Sandy participates in annual juried exhibitions, is on the teaching staff at several art institutions, and continues to receive numerous prestigious awards.

The Center for Birds of Prey Marion Square
Live Presentation
Presented by BP America With ties to the likes of Audubon, Catesby and Bachman, South Carolina enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and, within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated on a 152-acre campus near Charleston, the Centers are dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that affect birds and humans alike.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marks its 27th year in 2018, it is primarily focused in four defined areas:
AVIAN HEALTH The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 600 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365-day / 24-hour basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.
CONSERVATION EDUCATION The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats: on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed
40
enthusiasm for learning – all of which contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public education - exemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.
RESEARCH Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas. The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “citizen science” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.
SC OILED BIRDS TREATMENT FACILITY The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care

available for injured birds of prey and shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast. The Avian Conservation Center/ Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including: Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services. • Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills • Providing medical care to 8000+ injured birds of prey and shorebirds • As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers • Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations • Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate • Contaminant spill preparedness and response The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.
DID YOU KNOW . . . ? Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 600 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year. Visit the Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square to learn more.

The Orianne Society MARION SQUARE The Orianne Society will teach attendees why and how it promotes the conservation of reptiles, amphibians and game species (such as quail, turkey and deer) at the Marion Square arena. The Orianne Society is the global organization dedicated to conserving some of the most intriguing and remarkable animals on the planet – reptiles and amphibians. One of the ways it conserves these species is by protecting and restoring habitat – the same habitat and land management methods used to promote species like bobwhite quail, wild turkey and whitetail deer.
For example, when The Orianne Society applies prescribed fire to maintain healthy tracts of longleaf pine, restores native understory vegetation, or rehabilitates degraded riparian areas – it isn’t just benefiting reptiles and amphibians. Join The Orianne Society to learn more about our conservation efforts and how it encompasses promoting the conservation of reptiles and amphibians, along with many game species. This will be an informative presentation with live reptiles, including the Eastern Indigo Snake, Gopher Tortoise, and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.
SHOW TIMES Friday, Feb 15 | 1 pm Saturday, Feb 16 | 3 pm Sunday, Feb 17 | 3 pm Marion Square Reptiles and amphibians are often the bellwethers of habitat health. To see a healthy species in the wild is to see a healthy, functioning landscape.

Sheep & Duck Herding BRITTLEBANK PARK
Back by popular demand, Windy Knolls Farm owner and master trainer, Bill Coburn, will showcase the fascinating world of herding instinctive to the Border Collie breed. For 23 years Bill Coburn has been training and working with Border Collies. When he purchased his first dog he was advised to get a trained dog, but as Bill put it, “I was too hardheaded to do that.” So, with the help of a neighbor he trained his first dog on his own and the rest is history. Bill and his dogs have won many competitions
throughout the years, even one competition in Georgia where he could not communicate by voice commands. All of Mr. Coburn’s dogs spend their days working sheep on Windy Knolls Farm in Laurens, South Carolina. Here’s your chance to see them do what they were born to do in person. Watch his collies artfully muster sheep and ducks through various obstacles with only a whistle and a few commands throughout SEWE weekend.

SEWE ART WEEK October 1-5, 2018 Education is a cornerstone of SEWE’s mission, and the second annual SEWE Art Week committed an entire week to highlighting artists from around the world’s passion for the wild. SEWE Art Week kicked off October 1-5, 2018 as an all-encompassing way to teach students across the country the importance and beauty of wildlife and nature art. For the past three decades, SEWE has been advancing its mission of promoting wildlife and nature conservation. In recent years, SEWE has stepped outside of its weekend event and become more active in schools through two educational
programs – Kids for Conservation and the South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp. SEWE Art Week is now the third educational program that furthers that end through linking artists with youth and educating the next generation of conservationists. SEWE artists from California to Georgia engaged with schools in their local communities and shared the message of why the genre of wildlife art is so important. Seven artists committed to partake in SEWE Art Week, where they shared their talents with students.

HOST AN ARTIST PROGRAM
The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is proud to have launched the Host an Artist Program four years ago. With support from Hyatt Place + Hyatt House Charleston/Historic District and individual donors, SEWE is now able to further support the artists who travel from great distances to be in Charleston each February for the event. Charleston has long supported the arts, and careers have been born through SEWE over the last 37 years. Collectors and wildlife art enthusiasts gather here every February to see new work by acclaimed artists as well as new talent that is just being discovered. As the popularity of this event and the city has grown, so too have the costs for artists. With contributions from both individuals and businesses, SEWE will offset some of these expenses beginning with downtown lodging. Artists will receive greatly reduced room rates on upper King Street through the generosity of at the Hyatt Place + Hyatt House Charleston/Historic District and individual contributions. To host an artist, individuals or businesses may donate $150. Donations are accepted throughout the close of the show.

E
ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2018-2019 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited. The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 700,000 students in South Carolina.
and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation. In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it competed with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2018-2019 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts. SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.
The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In 2018, nearly 200 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling

LIBRARY Sponsored by Dominion Energy SEWE would like to thank all of the students and teachers who participated in our 201* Kids for Conservation (KFC) arts competition. Yet again, the judges were impressed with the talent and creativity of the Tri-County students. The goal of SEWE’s KFC program is to promote wildlife and environmental conservation awareness in our youth in hopes they grow into conservationminded adults. Sponsored by Dominion Energy, the competition is open to public, private, and home schooled students in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. Poster, photography and poetry entries will be on display at the Main Branch of the Charleston County Library on Calhoun Street during SEWE and KFC posters will be available for purchase ($1).
