Counselor in Training Counselor In Training (CIT) is for teens 15-18 years of age and rising 10th-12th grade students, and is a work-oriented volunteer experience which gives teens an opportunity to assist College For Kids instructors during the 2-week CFK summer camps. Applications are due by May 8th. CIT’s must be available to attend mandatory training from 10am-4pm on June 10th. CIT’s receive leadership training and earn 80 volunteer hours. Tuition: $80 per 2-week camp session

This class is for young puppies from 8 weeks up to 4 months old. We will focus primarily on socialization (what it is and how to do it correctly) and discuss the various developmental stages that your puppy will go through. We will also teach polite default behaviors that your puppy will use for life, such as sitting politely without being asked instead of jumping or barking. Paint A Masterpiece: Monet

Love the Impressionists? We will take a step-by-step approach to recreate a painting of Monet’s. We will also cover some of the key elements that make Monet’s paintings so vibrant - color, light, and movement. Oil or Acrylic, your choice.

This course teaches how to create a three dimensional object with very inexpensive materials. Papier-maché is a fun, versatile medium with endless possibilities: small furniture, animals, picture frames etc. No previous knowledge or art experience needed.

This class will focus on understanding the connection between Climate Change and Cyber-Threats and what the risks are and how they are changing security and creating vulnerabilities in the United States and around the world. We will also examine how Cyber Security strategies can help prepare for Climate Change vulnerabilities in such areas as critical infrastructures while examining how Climate Change and Cyber Threats can lead to the domino effect, “black swan” and “perfect storm” events.

Windows MS Office Basics

This course will cover Windows and Microsoft Office basics. Learn about the Windows 7 Operating System and options in the Start menu, desktop and screen saver then move through the control panel and explore the topics of user accounts, Appearance and Themes, printers, mouse, folder options and sound. The Microsoft Office section will go into the programs included in it like, PowerPoint, Excel and Word and how they are interoperable with each other.

About the Instructor: Daniel Allen is a Research Fellow at the Center for Climate and Security, where he focuses on the intersection of strategies for cyber-security and climate change security risks. He is also a contributing writer for TechTarget and President of N2 Cyber Security Consultants, LLC. He volunteers for Industrial Control Systems Joint Working Group (ICSJWG) and holds professional memberships in Project Management Institute (PMI), Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), OWASP Foundation and Cyber-Patriot National Youth Cyber Education Program Mentor. He worked as a Research Scientist for the Naval Health Research Center/ Medical Resource Planning and a High School Science and Climatology Instructor. He holds a Master’s Degree in Cyber Security and Information Assurance from National University, designated by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security as a “National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education.”

Lean to make sauce from scratch and build the best gourmet lasagna ever! Students will learn tips and how to assemble their own lasagna for consumption later. Marmalata Crostata Dessert

Learn to make a fresh fruit jam, Marmalata, from scratch which will then be used to make a classic Crostata dessert Tart. The instructor will make a fruit jam for the class and students will learn how to make and hand-knead the crostata dough for a tart of their own. Students will go home with raw dough to bake at home. A full Crostata will be prepared and baked in class by the instructor.

Craft Beer 101

Come explore the world of craft beer with a local professional brewer as your tour guide! This course will feature a brief history of the craft beer movement, discuss the raw ingredients used to brew and examine the qualities used to evaluate beer by certified beer judges – appearance, aroma, flavor and mouthfeel. You’ll gain insight into the brewing process, the equipment used to brew beer and become acquainted with some of the major craft beer styles. This is intended to be a beginner’s level course. No prior knowledge of brewing or beer styles required. All you’ll need is an open mind and adventurous palate. The class will meet twice at First Magnitude Brewing Company. The course will involve tasting beers and feature a private behind the scenes tour of a production brewery.

About the Instructor — John Denny is the founder and co-owner of First Magnitude Brewing Company, a 15-barrel production brewery located in the South Main district of Gainesville. After enjoying homebrewing as a hobby for more than 20 years, John decided to launch First Magnitude in the summer of 2014. The brewery features a taproom known as The Source where patrons can enjoy FM beers as well as beer, cider and mead from other Florida craft breweries. Denny has co-hosted Homebrew Talk, a monthly podcast featuring educational and entertaining aspects of homebrewing for the last four years. Prior to opening the brewery, Denny was the Associate Director of the UF Honors Program and also served as the Director of the Disability Resource Center.

Introduction To Kayaking

This is an introductory class into the paddle sport of kayaking. Through demonstration and on water instruction, you will gain skills and confidence to allow you to further explore this sport. Class includes the basics of self and assisted rescue. This involves getting in the water while wearing a personal flotation device and working with a partner to learn.

Port Inglis Island Hopping *

Wild Lore + History Of St. Augustine *

On this kayak tour, we’ll explore the wild side of St. Augustine, where trolleys cannot go. Mindfulness-Based Meditation

This series of meditation classes will be based on the first four classes of the MindfulnessBased-Stress-Reduction (MBSR) course from the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s “Center for Mindfulness”. We will learn mindfulness meditation, a great help in learning to handle the stress in our daily life. We need to be comfortable for meditation, so we will be seated on chairs, not the floor. Bring a bottle of drinking water (recommended).

This class will focus on the founding of Gainesville in 1853 and its first 50 years. Among the topics covered will be the role of Gainesville in the Civil War, Reconstruction, the arrival of the East Florida Seminary, the building of the new courthouse and the impact yellow fever had on the town. A slideshow will illustrate the significant buildings and events.
