o, the Festival period is almost upon us. I know that there are some curmudgeons who loathe the transformation of Edinburgh into the cultural capital of the world for the summer, and who would rather the hordes of tourists who descend upon the city would just stay away, but this is a time of year that makes my heart sing. Of course we have the International Festival and the Fringe to look forward to, and they are a joy in so many ways. But it’s often the smaller festivals that really surprise and enthral. Whether it’s those devoted to books, jazz and blues, science, magic, fi lm, art, Beltane, children’s – or even more esoteric options such as the

‘It’s so often the smaller festivals which really surprise and enthral’ festival of the harp – every interest is catered for. Apart from the prestige, money and energy these festivals bring to Edinburgh, more than anything else they bring people to our great city. Throw in the Royal Military Tattoo and almost five million people came to Edinburgh specifically to see a festival – that’s more than for the Olympics or the football World Cup. So, to those people who are tempted to moan, here’s an idea: get over it and get out there. Edinburgh now has something for everyone, but you won’t fi nd it unless you go looking for it...

n 1947, exactly 70 years ago, Edinburgh welcomed its first three festivals – the International Festival, the Festival Fringe and the Film Festival. After immediate success, the festival scene grew over the following decades with the introduction of the Military Tattoo in 1950, Jazz and Blues Festival in 1978 and the International Book Festival in 1989. It all started in 1945 when Austrian impresario Rudolf Bing, who had settled in the UK after fleeing the Anschluss with Nazi Germany, proposed Edinburgh as the ideal location for an international festival. After the

They called themselves the ‘Festival Adjuncts’, but a journalist referred to the unofficial group as being on ‘the fringes of official festival drama’, and the term stuck, thus coining the Festival Fringe. At the same time, pioneering documentary filmmaker John Grierson and a small group of others were organising the first film festival – now the longest-running film festival in the world. Their inaugural year showcased 75 films from 18 countries. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the city’s reputation for comedy really took off. It started at the Lyceum

After the devastation of two world wars, the idea of an international fair was applauded devastation of two world wars, the idea was applauded as a chance to encourage post-war relations with other countries and to establish Edinburgh as a cultural hotspot. A festival committee was founded to organise the event and an opening date was decided upon – 24 August 1947. The committee invited acts from all over the world, including Bruno Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, to highlight the occasion. However, eight British theatre companies who had not been invited to take part took offence and decided to set up 10 |

It featured a group of students from the Cambridge Footlights and The Oxford Revue comedy clubs called Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller. After rave reviews, the comic quartet went on to perform their show around the world. In 1963 President John F. Kennedy attended one of their performances in New York. At the 2015 Fringe there were 50,266 performances of 3,269 different shows, with around 2,298,100 tickets issued. Edinburgh’s 12 major festivals generated £280 million in 2015 alone, a 19% increase since 2010. In 2016, a total of 643 free shows and 164 pay-what-youwant shows were included in the Fringe programme.

Dud. Now the Fringe puts on more than 3,000 shows in 294 different venues, with performers from 48 countries. Now well-established as a world-leading cultural resort, the book festival soon followed suit. Established in 1983, the event organised 30 ‘meet the author’ events. Today the festival holds 700 events and welcomes over 220,000 people each year. Since 1947, the number of festival additions includes the science, art and children’s festivals, and MagicFest. Edinburgh’s cultural focus has also paved the way for an astonishing variety of smaller festivals such as the harp, fashion, Iranian, German bierfest and yarn festivals. In fact, 68% of Edinburgh locals say the International Festival has made them more likely to explore other cultural events during the year. The fun doesn’t stop in winter. Festivals like the Storytelling Festival, Samhuinn Fire Festival and Edinburgh’s Christmas continue right through to Hogmanay, which welcomes over 80,000 revellers, making it the largest New Year street party in the world. In 2015 the festivals generated £313 million for the Scottish economy and were attended by 4.5 million people from around the world – a greater attendance than the FIFA World Cup. 12 |

n the 11th century, during the reign of King Malcolm III and his Queen Consort, Margaret, a ferry service crossing the Firth of Forth was established just 10 miles north west of Edinburgh from a settlement called Cas Chaolas. The Queen, who was canonised in 1250 by Pope Innocent IV and became Saint Margaret of Scotland, is said to have initiated the ferry service to allow pilgrims to cross the Firth of Forth on their way to Dunfermline Abbey and St Andrews, and so the settlement came to be known as ‘Queensferry’. The service ran until 1964 when the Forth Road Bridge was built. The ‘Edgar’ of Port Edgar, the marina just west of the town, pays homage to Queen

The Queen returned by boat, marking the final voyage of the 800 year old ferry service Margaret’s brother Edgar Ætheling. Port Edgar, once naval base HMS Lochinvar, now bustles with a watersports centre and 300 berths with full tidal access. At the time of its opening, the Forth Road Bridge was Europe’s longest suspension bridge and the fourth longest bridge in the world, measuring 3,300ft from one side to the other. regiments to make the first crossing. For many commuters this chopped over an hour off their journey to and from the capital. In its opening year four million vehicles used the bridge, however by 2002 that number had risen to 23 million, sparking calls for a second bridge over the firth, which has now been built. After crossing the bridge, The Queen returned to South Queensferry by boat, marking the final voyage of the 800-year-old ferry service. The August-time Ferry Fair, which can trace its origins to the 13th century, was resurrected in the 1930s and is now a well-established event and a highlight in the calendar for locals and visitors alike. The week-long fair culminates in the crowning of a Ferry Fair

Queen from a local primary school. This year the fair will run from 6-13 August. Another, much older, tradition in the Queensferry calendar is the Burryman’s Parade in which a local-born man is covered from head-to-toe in burdock burrs and paraded along a seven-mile route, visiting all the local pubs where he is given a dram of whisky through a straw. Forbidden from talking, the slow walk usually takes the Burryman over eight hours to complete. It is said that this unusual event brings good luck and wards off evil spirits. The origins of the Burryman are thought to pre-date Christianity in Scotland, and may have been a springtime pagan ritual to symbolise fertility and regeneration, possibly

Britain’s youngest ever featherweight boxing champion, Paul Appleby, was brought up in South Queensferry. Stephen Hendry became the world’s youngest snooker World Champion, aged only 21, in 1990. Six-time ITF Taekwondo World Champion Julia Cross grew up here and set up the South Queensferry School of Taekwondo in 1998. UK chart-topping rock band Simple Minds’ lead vocalist Jim Kerr lived here with ex wives Chrissie Hynde, founding member of The Pretenders, and later actress Patsy Kensit.

concluding in the sacrifice of the Burryman. The Black Castle, not actually a castle but a black house situated next to The Ferry Tap public house, was built in 1626 by a successful mariner called William Lowrie and his wife, Marion Speddie. Their initials, W.L and M.S can still be seen carved into the pediment on the facade of the house. Several female members of the Lowrie family and house staff fell prey to the Rev. Ephraim Melville, the town’s ‘witch hunter’, and were burned at the stake. It has been claimed that Melville was fond of the Lowries home and wanted it for himself. A little further down the High Street a 17th century tolbooth towers five storeys over the terraced shops and homes. Its steeple features a jubilee clock, added to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887.

The town’s oldest building is the mid-15th century Priory Church of St Mary of Mount Carmel, now called St Mary’s Episcopal Church, on Farquhar Terrace. It was built for the Carmelite Order of friars and today is the only medieval Carmelite

Several female members of the Lowrie family were burned at the stake church still in use in Britain. The order were initially invited to the area by the local landowner, James Dundas, who gifted the land for their monastery. until the 19th century. The original keep of Dundas Castle, a mile away, was built in 1436. Extensive building work in the 19th century by renowned architect William Burn bankrupted the Dundas family and they were forced to sell, ending the family’s association with the area. Still in private ownership, the castle is available for private events, as is the magnificent Hopetoun House, which is also on the outskirts of South Queensferry. In 2012 initial excavation for the new Queensferry crossing unearthed a 10,000-year-old Mesolithic settlement. Archaeologists found a seven-metre long, oval-shaped, pit, the remains of a hearth, over 1,000 flint artefacts, such as arrowheads and tools, and charred hazelnut shells. This discovery is the oldest of its type found in Scotland. WWW.SFEDINBURGH.CO.UK

I

started working as skipper of Maid of the Forth in 1999 and I love it. It is a family business – I work with my father-in-law and brother-in-law. On a typical day I will do four journeys to and from Inchcolm Island where there is a 12th century abbey. Leaving from Hawes Pier in South Queensferry, the island is 40 miles to the west and, travelling at 10 knots, the journey takes 45 minutes. Passengers can get off and explore for an hour and a half before heading back to the mainland. For me, the best thing is meeting passengers – I love that they always really enjoy themselves. Being out on the water every day is a wonderful thing. I couldn’t do an office job, the fi rst day I went out to sea I was hooked. We do a lot of weddings on

Inchcolm Island and one time we left the minister behind. We are always so busy making sure the groom is on board, no one thought to check for the minister. Very kindly the RNLI managed to get him to the island on time so the wedding went ahead and the RNLI received a nice donation from the bride and groom afterwards. There are lots of puffi ns and kittiwakes on the river at the moment. All year round we see grey seals, and sometimes we see porpoises, bottle-nose dolphins, minke whales and sperm whales. A few years ago there was a pod of killer whales in the fi rth, they came right up to the rail bridge. Many people just don’t realise we are here – it is an amazing thing to be able to do right on the city’s doorstep.

RESTAURANT FASHION REVIEWS

Le Roi Fou 1 Forth Street, EH1 3JX No city outside of London comes close to matching Edinburgh for its density of Michelin starred restaurants, while the next tier of ambitious establishments with serious designs on joining the likes of Messrs Wishart, Kitchen, Kitching and Bland seems to keep growing. The latest man to be attracted by the gold-paved streets of the capital is Jerome Henry (pictured right). The Swiss-French chef’s credentials are impeccable – he spent seven years as the head chef at Anton Mosimann’s Private Dining Club and a spell at the uber-trendy Shoreditch restaurant-cum-gothic art emporium Les Trois Garcons. The plan for Le Roi Fou (‘The Mad King’) is that the interest in art that permeated Les Trois Garcons will underpin Henry’s new Edinburgh eaterie, with his partnership with arty type Isolde Nash designed to produce a Belle Epoque-style salon in which the walls are groaning with contemporary art. On the basis of my (admittedly early) visit, the transformation of what was once Urban Angel is still a work in progress, although my interest was squarely on the food, which looked pricey for what they describe as ‘a neighbourhood restaurant’ (although at £21.50 for three courses the pre-theatre menu is worth a shot). On the food front Henry hits the mark. After a haddock croquette amuse bouche, we started with a home-made yet strangely underwhelming foie gras ‘au torchon’ and a gloriously strident spiced fish soup, which was possibly the best version of this dish either of us have ever tasted. Our main courses were exceptional: perfectly produced steak tartare and beautifully cooked plancha-seared cod served with celery, saffron and a deliciously nuanced saffron sauce. My pudding of poached rhubarb with pistachio crumble and crème fraîche ice cream was serviceable, but the Swiss cheeseboard was outstanding. All in all, a must-try for serious foodies – but come packing plenty of the folding stuff. RB 0131 557 9346 | www.leroifou.com

The Lantern Room 1-3 Baxter’s Pl, Edinburgh, EH1 3AF This attractive new restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh offers up an excellent pre-theatre option, which is perfect for those hoping to catch a show at the nearby Playhouse. My dinner companion and I sampled the tasty delights from the prix fixe menu, and we certainly weren’t disappointed. My favourite dish of the eve was the sundried tomato & herb risotto...although the deliciously gooey sticky toffee pudding would warrant a second visit any day. A relaxed atmosphere with beautiful decor. AR 0131 526 3778 | www.facebook.com/thelanternroom 30 |

The SF Edinburgh reviewing team sample six of the best new restaurants on the capital’s dining scene Reviews by Richard Bath, Morag Bootland, Hermione Lister-Kaye, Julia Welstead, Amanda Richardson

Wagamama Unit 5, St Andrew Square, EH2 2BD The latest addition to the trendy culinary quarter was bustling on a Friday lunchtime as we watched the chefs at work. We tried the sirloin and shitake salad, perfect for a warm day and pork belly + panko apple hirata steamed buns, an absolute favourite. From the summer menu we loved the beef tataki, lightly seared sliced steak with a zingy dressing – we left the pickle which overwhelmed the beef – and the nuoc cham tuna steak (perfectly cooked) with quinoa and fried kale. A polished lunch in a great setting. MB 0131 285 4787 | www.wagamama.com SF EDINBURGH

Pizzeria 1926 85 Dalry Rd, EH11 2AA A lively happy place, buzzing with 70% Italian custom. My top pizza eating team (three sons) gave this full marks. The whitewash and blue decor and Italian images transported us to a sun-filled Amalfi Coast, our pizzas cooked in the pizza oven, centre stage. ‘We brought it all the way from Italy,’ said Francesco, ‘as these ovens cannot be made here.’ The pizzas were delicious in all respects – crisp, light base and fresh, plentiful toppings. A lemon pudding provided a suitably zesty finish. JW 0131 337 5757 | www.facebook.com/pizzeria1926 32 |

NEW RESTAURANTS

Otro 22 Coates Crescent, EH3 7AF This brand new brasserie located on the corner of Coates Crescent and Atholl Place (where the Indian Cavalry Club used to be) is the new, much larger, sister restaurant to popular New Chapter on Eyre Place. On a larger scale, Otro boasts a private dining area downstairs and a bar and two dining rooms at street level. Pastel shades and a watercolour-style wallpaper keeps the restaurant light and spacious. The owners have taken a chance here – there are no restaurants of this quality immediately nearby and work on Haymarket’s new office complex is far from completion. However, the food is good and prices are competitive offering three courses for £16.95 before 6pm. After enjoying a cocktail at the bar we headed through to the dining room where we were seated in a bay window looking out onto Atholl Place. To start, I ordered salmon tartare with wasabi mayonnaise and marinated cucumber and my dining companion ordered Shetland mussels in a bourbon and paprika sauce which gave a very unusual taste – but somehow it worked well. Both dishes were deliciously fresh tasting and perfectly sized. To follow, I ordered a rib-eye 8oz steak with new potatoes and mixed mushrooms with wild garlic and parsley. The steak was cooked to perfection. My guest had a fillet of sea bass with salsa-verde on a warm chickpea, chorizo and wild garlic salad and assured me it was the best sea bass he’d had in ages. For dessert we further indulged in a Yorkshire rhubarb cheesecake with stem ginger ice cream and vanilla crème brûlée with pistachio biscotti, both heavenly. From the wine list, which includes a selection of low sulphite wines, we ordered a bottle of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Classica ‘Masciarelli’ to accompany the meal. All in all this was a near perfect dinner and we will certainly be back for more. HL-K 0131 556 0004 | www.otrorestaurant.co.uk

The Bakers Arms 87-91 Henderson Street, EH6 6ED This Leith bar-cum-eaterie is in a huge whitewashed room with high ceilings, a large cocktail bar, and big windows giving panoramic views over the Water of Leith and The Shore. Our starters of proper old-fashioned corned beef (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!) and a gorgeous mix of haddock, duck egg yolk, potato cake and a hollandaise-style sauce were excellent, less convincing were a burger verging on overcooked and a solid duck confit with too much raw veg. The cocktails are good and the staff friendly. RB 0131 554 4444 | www.thebakersarmsedinburgh.co.uk

SIX FASHION OF THE BEST

Ciao bello! At SF Edinburgh we adore authentic Italian food, so here are six molto bene specimens we would heartily recommend for an experience that goes beyond just pizza and pasta

Locanda de Gusti This small family-run trattoria is my favourite Italian restaurant in Edinburgh thanks to the inspired Neapolitan cuisine of chef Rosario Sartore. Authentic (thanks to ingredients imported directly from Italy) and perfectly judged, his menu changes every day, although the excellence is constant. Try the fish, which is always tip-top. The £29 tasting menu is outstanding. All dishes (even pasta) are gluten-free.

0131 346 8800 | 102 Dalry Rd, Haymarket | www.locandadegusti.com

Contini The city centre mothership of the hyperactive Victor and Carina Contini’s burgeoning empire has just undergone a comprehensive overhaul centred around an excellent new menu. Their commitment to authenticity and local sourcing of key ingredients remains, but the menu is more pared down and contemporary. We particularly enjoyed the sharing plates, which are perfect for a chatty lunch over a glass or three of vino.

Cucina This floral but trendy restaurant in the upmarket G&V Hotel on the Royal Mile is well worth visiting, although you’ll need a bulging wallet unless you opt for the £23 three-course tasting menu. Bolognan chef Mattia Camorani has constructed a menu based around great pasta options and classic Italian dishes – try the braised lamb shoulder with sweetbreads, saddle of rabbit or monkfish with n’dujia sausage. 0131 240 1666 | G&V Royal Mile Hotel, 1 George IV Bridge | www.quorvuscollection.com/en/gandv-hotel-edinburgh/dining

ITALIAN JOHNSTONS RESTAURANTS OF ELGIN

Origano Across the road from another of my favourites, the equally excellent La Favorita, Origano is primarily an absolutely outstanding pizzeria (just try booking a table) that places its huge pizza oven literally centrestage. It also does a top selection of homemade bruschetta, antipasto platters, freshly-prepared salads and lasagne al forno, but it’s the pizzas that keep the punters rolling into this former Victoria India Rubber Mill. Most of the pizzas cost £12-17, so they’re not cheap, but in this case you get what you pay for.

0131 467 7266 | 30 Sandport St, Leith | www.cafedomenico.co.uk

Café Domenico This little family-run neighbourhood restaurant in Leith is one of the city’s great hidden gems. I still remember the first time that I went there and was astounded when the seafood platter turned out to be a huge bowl groaning with langoustines, lobster and mussels. The more mundane stuff is equally good though, with the pasta and the risotto both well worth trying. The place is as joyously old school as those two other Edinburgh Italian institutions, La Bruschetta and Al Dente, with gingham tablecloths, an old-world ambience and refreshingly sensible prices.

0131 554 6539 | 236 Leith Walk | www.origano-leith.co.uk

Nonna’s Kitchen I adored this place and the seemingly never-ending list of specials in its previous incarnation as The Patio on Dundas Street. Although it’s now a chic contemporary restaurant in Morningside, the heart of the fantastic family-run establishment (the ‘Nonna’ is grandma Stornaiuolo, the first chef) remains the same. No one in the world makes better linguine with split prawns, while the veal Milanese is flawless. They do pasta and pizza – try the penne al norcina – but it’s the Italian classics that mean you may struggle to book a table. 0131 466 6767 | 45 Morningside Rd | www.nonnas-kitchen.co.uk

MY CITY FASHION GARDEN

My city garden Vicki and Michael Reid-Thomas have lived at Riccarton Mains Farmhouse for over 40 years. ‘It was a ruin and hadn’t been lived in for 50 years,’ Vicki says. Both keen gardeners, the three-acre plot comprises several farm buildings, a small field, orchard and the garden. ‘It is like a large cottage garden with herbaceous borders, shrubs, roses and a mixture of different trees,’ says Vicki. 40 |

From snowdrops in January right through to the end of autumn, there is colour in the garden. ‘Roses do particularly well here and we have wonderful colour from the trees in autumn,’ she says. ‘My husband and I both spend as much time as we can in the garden.’ Riccarton Mains Farmhouse will open to the public from 2pm on 9 July. www.scotlandsgardens.org

ROYAL PARK TERRACE

alking along the uniform Georgian tenements of Royal Park Terrace in Edinburgh’s New Town, you would be forgiven for imagining high ceilinged apartments with intricate cornicing and grand Victorian fireplaces behind each door. However, nothing could be further from the truth in gallery owner Tracey Roxburgh’s colourful and vibrant home. After a long and successful career in corporate Hong Kong, Tracey and her husband Archie returned to their Scottish roots to set up their very own passion project. ‘We have been collecting art for over 20 years now – it has always been a passion for both of us,’ says Tracey. In January 2014, the Urbane Art Gallery opened its doors to the public. Tracey and Archie specialise in international contemporary art and their taste is apparent in their unusual Edinburgh home, which was historically a butchers shop.

‘When we bought the flat we completely gutted it,’ recalls Tracey. ‘We strove to create an effective fusion between design and art, with a focus on achieving a polished industrial look.’ The flat is entered at street level through the main entrance onto a mezzanine gantry with an en suite bedroom to the right and bright yellow staircase leading down into the main living space on the left. Heading downstairs, one arrives in a spacious and contemporary-style kitchen with adjoining sitting and dining areas, a small garden, a second bedroom and bathroom. ‘My husband is into Miro, but my favourite piece of art is the large pencil and oil on board painting of a girl hanging above the stairs – so we have quite different styles but they complement each other well,’ says Tracey. A particular highpoint of the flat are the large industrial-looking metal doors in the downstairs bedroom, which slide to reveal space to hang clothing behind and raw brick walls.

Clockwise from left: The upstairs bedroom; Large industrial-style sliding doors in the downstairs bedroom; Looking down from the gantry.

orn and raised in Fort William, Judy R Clark knew from a young age that she wanted to go into fashion design. After receiving a fi rst class honours at Heriot Watt University, Judy then embarked on an internship with the late great Alexander McQueen. ‘It was an amazing experience and I learned so much,’ says Judy. ‘The time and patience that went into making those garments was absolutely incredible.’ Upon her return, Judy set up her own eponymous label and chose to specialise in tailored heirloom garments, embracing difficult fabrics such

The time and patience that went into making those garments was absolutely incredible as tweed, vintage lace and silk, and feathers and pearls, giving them a stylish twist. ‘I am often asked how long it takes to create my garments, but honestly, I love it so much I don’t notice the time passing,’ she says. In 2012 Judy gained attention for designing Scottish singer Emeli Sandé’s outfit for the Scottish Variety Awards in Glasgow, and again in 2013 when she won Womenswear Designer of the Year at the Scottish Style Awards. Other notable clients have included tennis mum Judy Murray, for whom she made a green and purple Wimbledon-inspired jacket, and Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow, who recently bought a tartan tailored outfit for their collection to be displayed in an exhibition on Scottish design history. FASHION BEAUTY

No problem Tackle those troublesome skincare woes and look fresh-faced this summer

Problems such as rosacea, acne and dry skin can be miserable to deal with, so here are a few tips from celebrity facialist Charlotte Connoley

F

or acne-prone skin, stick to fragrance-free products. Start with a cleansing oil to dissolve dirt and follow up with something that contains zinc, charcoal or clay to draw out impurities. For a deep cleanse, the Sanctuary Spa Purifying Charcoal Bubble Sheet Mask will draw out dirt by producing tiny micro bubbles which you then wash off. Finish your routine with a facial oil to help rebalance the skin. Get into a bedtime routine of a quick facial massage to help remove toxins under the skin. Use an organic rosehip seed oil. Rohr Remedy Boab and Rosehip Oil combines the healing properties of

62 |

062-063_sfe05.indd 62

rosehip with mineral-rich boab and works a treat. For dry skin use a facial oil at night, but be careful not to strip the skin so avoid foaming cleansers. Use a serum before your moisturiser to add an extra hydration boost, while a daytime moisturiser with added hyaluronic acid is a must. When dealing with Rosacea, the La Roche Posay Rosaliac range is a good place to start. Avoid scented products and those with anti-ageing properties in them. Strip back your skincare to the basics and try a grapeseed or rosehip seed oil on skin at night. Follow Charlotte on Instagram, @charlotteconnoleybeauty

Guerlain Spa The Guerlain Spa at Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh is not easy to find – up in one lift, back down in another – but when you do they offer you a very warm welcome. The Guerlain Beauty Lift Facial involves careful acupressure and massage of the face, targeting every muscle. It is designed to smooth lines and activate microcirculation to restore volume in areas where it is needed. My therapist first talked me through the process and selected the best products to suit my skin type. The indulgent treatment takes about an hour and I left feeling relaxed and refreshed, my skin appeared brighter and firmer. MS £145, www.waldorfastoriaedinburgh.com/ guerlain-spa, 0131 222 8836

This high street clinic is a hidden gem – an Aladdin’s Cave of organic and natural food, drink and cosmetics with a private treatment room to the back of the shop. I went for a 60-minute Holistic Facial which uses a range of completely natural products from Dr Hauschka and Anitpodes. After a quick consultation and overview of the products best suited to my skin I lay on the massage table and thoroughly relaxed for an hour of cleansing, toning, moisturising and facial masks, after which my skin felt replenished and glowing. THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Amid the impending festival madness, comedian Craig Hill knows a few quiet spots to escape for a peaceful afternoon in the city WORDS BY C RAIG H I L L

I have lived in Edinburgh for over 25 years now since studying drama at Queen Margaret College in 1991. When I have friends to stay I take them to Dean Village. It is one of the prettiest and most unspoiled parts of Edinburgh and slightly off the beaten track. The Water of Leith is the best walk to do through Edinburgh, of course stopping for lunch at the Scran and Scallie in Stockbridge. There is no better comedy venue than The Stand. I don’t think people in Edinburgh realise how lucky they are to have such a great venue. Comedians from all over the world tell me that it is one of their favourite places to perform. It is a proper comedy club and always a great laugh.

98 |

098_sfe05.indd 98

My favourite place for breakfast is the Educated Flea on Broughton Street. They do a mini breakfast, so if you’re greedy and indecisive like me you can have a few at once. I recently had four different mini breakfasts in one sitting.

It is one of the prettiest and most unspoiled parts the city The best way to describe the festival is – every day is a Saturday. There is something fun happening every single day and the choice is unbelievable. Words can never do it justice, people are always completely gobsmacked when they come to the festival for the first time. To escape the madness I like to cycle along the canal. It is great too because it is flat, a rare thing in Edinburgh, and I just love how open and peaceful it is.
