etween Duddingston Kirk and the loch of the same name lies a garden that is the lasting legacy of Edinburgh GPs Nancy and Andrew Neil. The doctors were a husband and wife team with a practice near Meadowbank. The energetic couple enjoyed tending their allotment near the Western General Hospital, but when the allotments were made

‘The Beginning’ took two years. The Neil’s were ahead of their time in that they encouraged their patients to help them in the garden, extolling the many virtues and health benefits of outdoor activity and spending time in the tranquillity of nature. The Neil’s both passed away in 2005, within just a few months of each other, having looked after the garden for 40 years. Today the garden is looked after by Claudia Pottier and a team of affable and able volunteers. Claudia began volunteering in the garden with

‘Extoling the virtues and health benefits of spending time in the tranquillity of nature’ into car parks they had to look for somewhere else to utilise their green fingers. It was one of the Neil’s patients, an elder of Duddingston Kirk, who told them about the area of glebe land known as The Calves Field. The land had been used for grazing calves and geese but due to the rocky surfaces and sloping ground it had never been cultivated. But in June 1965 the Neil’s began the work of clearing the ground. It was a massive undertaking and even clearing the piece of ground that the Neil’s called SF EDINBURGH

the Neil’s in the year 2000 and they took her on as gardener a few years later. ‘I’ve tried not to change the garden, but garden’s by their nature change,’ Claudia tells me. ‘It was very overgrown when I started because the Neil’s were in their 80s, Andrew was very ill and was in a wheelchair, Nancy was looking after him, but she was quite unwell too.’ Claudia and her team of green fingered volunteers have taken out many trees, taken the planting right out to the boundaries of the garden and introduced many more herbaceous plants.

One of the areas where there are a variety of herbs to be found is the physic garden which was created as a unique memorial to the Neil’s, highlighting their lifelong dedication to horticulture and medicine.

‘The physic garden is a unique memorial to the Neil’s’ As well as the array of plants, there are some furry and feathered visitors to the garden. Swans, ducks and geese glide gracefully to the loch shore and Claudia takes great pleasure watching them parade their cygnets, ducklings and goslings through the garden in Spring. The rabbits that pop in to eat the plants are less welcome guests. The 10 |

wildlife pond is popular with young visitors who can watch leeches, beetles and even newts swim around in the murky water. The Thomson’s Tower sits within the garden, designed by William Playfair and built in 1825 for Duddingston Curling Society as a store for their stones. It now houses a curling museum. The garden is open to the public every day and is free of charge. It is available for wedding photographs, religious wedding ceremonies and private events. It is looked after by a trust set up by the Neil’s before they died and the running of the garden relies heavily on donations. www.drneilsgarden.co.uk

Fun Fact: Porty’s Greatest Show

hen summer blesses the capital with warm sunny days, there’s nothing better than a stroll along Portobello’s promenade with an ice cream (flake optional) in hand, as you relax and soak up the rays. However, what was a popular seaside resort at the start of the last century was not always on tourists’ radar. Overlooking the Firth of Forth between Leith and Musselburgh, Portobello was first

Portobello owes its reputation not only to the golden sandy beach, but also to the showmen that made it an entertainment Mecca at the beginning of the last century.

‘Portobello reached its peak as a tourist attraction by the end of the 19th century’

Illusionists, cinema shows (the very fi rst ones) and merry-go-rounds, as well as an infinite number of acts, gathered together in one of the country’s most famous fairs, attracting tourists from all over the Central Belt.

known as Figgate Whins (Figgate thought to be a Saxon word for ‘cow’s ditch’), an area of moorland used by the monks in Holyrood Abbey to graze their cattle. Itt was on this land that, in 1296, William Wallace gathered his forces and joined Robert Lauder and Crystal of Seton to fight the traitorous Earl of Dunbar and where, in 1650, Oliver Cromwell held secret meetings with the Scottish leaders. But it was only in 1742 that Figgate Whins was given its modern name, when sailor George Hamilton built the first cottage in the area and called it Puerto Bello Hut, after the famous battle fought in Panama. The cottage was built on

The most notable names were Harry Marvello, Andre Letta and the Codona family. Already famous in the UK, with Codona having his travelling company, Marvello performing in front of Queen Victoria and Letta becoming known as Scotland’s Court Magician, they moved to Portobello in the same period and carried out their vibrant lives in a very small area. This resulted in a few scandals as well as a good dose of magic tricks, sensational shows and amusements in what became a huge funfair that brought in crowds of tourists. 16 |

what we now know as High Street, close to the junction with Brighton Square. It eventually turned into a proper house and was the only inhabited building in the area until the beginning of the 1750s, with a number of potteries opening and laying the foundations of the local economy. The land around Portobello house was eventually bought by a merchant named William Jamieson, who discovered a brick clay deposit here and started excavations in the area. This created one of the most successful brick businesses in the country, with exports reaching Europe and the US. One of Portobello’s most iconic buildings, The Tower – now neighbouring a

‘Porty’s promenade still comes alive when the sun appears’ local amusement centre – was an eccentric building for its time, the project included the stones of the houses that were taken down in order to build the South Bridge and St Andrews Cathedral. In 1797, Sir Walter Scott became the quartermaster of the Edinburgh Light Horse and Portobello beach became a drill practice ground. Another notable historic moment goes back to 1822, when King George IV visited the beach for a review of the Highlanders and the troops. Hosted on the fine Portobello sands, this event was remembered as a magnificent parade and it was also the first royal visit to Scotland in two centuries. Portobello reached its peak as a tourist attraction by the end of the 19th century: with its two main roads and the opening of the baths, it started drawing crowds from Glasgow 18 |

and the central belt. At this time, Portobello had transformed itself into a large amusement park, with funfair attractions being part of the landscape. Renowned performers from all over the country came here to entertain the crowds. One of its main attractions, besides the fairs that crowded the shore, was its swimming pool, a truly cutting edge facility for the time. With its artificial waves and Art Deco design, it was the largest outdoor bathing pool in Europe. Opened in 1933, it

was mothballed during the war but reopened in the late 1940s, counting a young lifeguard named Sean Connery among its employees. However, the popularity of cheap package holidays abroad caused a sharp decline in Portobello’s crowds by the 1980s. The pool closed down and it was demolished in 1988. Despite the main funfair amusements having disappeared, Porty’s promenade and the main street still come alive with families and cyclists when the sun appears. It wasn’t

until 1896, that Portobello was incorporated into Edinburgh, resulting in a strong sense of community, which continues to characterises this residential suburb. Many community projects, such as the recently inaugurated Bellfield Community Centre, contribute to this. New restaurants and attractions are popping up all the time. There is plenty of choice for the visitor whose stomach calls him to action and everything can be easily found within a short walking distance. If you fancy a quick yet delicious bite, Bross Bagels is a highly recommended spot: a wee emporium with attentively-sourced ingredients and a cosy vibe, it also serves great coffee. If you prefer to stay on the beach, what could be more relaxing than munching a picnic while gazing out to sea? Then there’s the Esplanade – The Espy to locals – with its homely feeling and great pints, it’s one of the best foodie venues in the area. While walking on the Promenade, it’s almost compulsory to stop at Crumbs of Portobello and treat yourself to a crêpe. Last but not least, gastropub Guild of Foresters will treat you to delicious ales and tasty dishes. Besides having become a great place to eat, Portobello is bustling during its Big Beach Busk, which runs on the last Saturday in August. Good vibrations are always found at Dalriada for music lovers, with live gigs and interesting acts in a cosy environment. When the sun is up and the sea calls, you can also enjoy a trip with the Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club or the Row Porty Club. And if a dip in the water is too chilly, then head to the Turkish baths, one of the last three operating in Scotland.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...

A day in the life of... The voice of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo since 1992, Alasdair Hutton OBE tells the story of ‘the greatest show on earth’

D

WORDS BY MORAG BOOTL AN D

espite claiming to have only been given the job as script writer and narrator of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo ‘because they were desperate.’ Alasdair Hutton certainly has the military savvy for the job. With a total of 35 years in the military, 22 in the Parachute Regiment TA, ten in the Central Volunteer Headquarters and three as an Honorary Colonel in the Lothian and Borders Army Cadet Force. Alasdair writes the script well in advance of August, but intensive rehearsals don’t start until the Monday before the opening night on Friday. One of the most important parts of Alasdair’s role is to ensure that the crowd are in fine fettle and this begins well in advance of the performance. ‘I like to welcome people by country and individually,’ he says. ‘If there’s a birthday, people often send me little notes to read out to family or friends. Making people feel that they are part of the show is very important.’

The tattoo is run with military precision, so when things go awry it’s often down to the good old Scottish weather. The sea haar can cause problems for fireworks, as can the wind. If it tops 23 knots there’s a risk of sparks being

‘The teams use real bayonets, so it can be dangerous’ blown into the crowd. Rain can make rifle butts and stocks slippery and difficult to manoevre. ‘The teams use real bayonets, so it can be dangerous, ‘ says Alasdair. It’s Alasdair’s job to ensure that in very few words he sets the right tone for the show, so that the audience knows when they should feel happy, sad or excited. Clarity is also important when many of the audience don’t speak English as their first language. Nerves also play a part, but Alasdair welcomes them, saying that they are essential to keeping him sharp and on-the-ball.

SIX FASHION OF THE BEST

Festival-free During August, it's virtually impossible to get a table in the city centre, so why not explore some of the eateries in Edinburgh's outlying areas

The Bridge Inn, Ratho This wonderful canal-side pub is one of my favourite venues for a gastronomic trip out of town (if you're feeling particularly energetic, you can cycle there from Fountainbridge down the towpath). Reserve a table overlooking the water and get stuck into the cullen skink and peerless fish and chips, or go upscale and try the roe venison or beef assiette – both are superb. Oh, and the beer and wine selection are excellent.

27 Baird Rd, Ratho | 0131 333 1320 | www.bridgeinn.com

Dantes, Colinton In the lovely preservation village of Colinton, Dantes looks upscale, but beneath its borderline flashy exterior there lies a classic Italian restaurant – a warm welcome, traditionally structured menu and great food. I loved the flawless saltimbocca alla Romana, while the seared duck breast on wilted spinach with a thyme and plum reduction was memorable. The wine list is also unusually varied. Dantes is not cheap but it's definitely worth it.

The Boat House, Sth Queensferry The SFE staff love South Queensferry in general and eating at Orocco Pier or Hawes in particular, but The Boathouse gets my vote for its wonderful position right on the Forth and for its relentlessly enjoyable seafood menu. The crab, seafood curry and scallops are all winners, while the hot seafood platter is expensive but definitely worth it. There are lots of meaty options too. The prices are very sensible. 22 High St, Sth Queensferry | 0131 331 5429 | www.theboathouse-sq.co.uk

JOHNSTONS OUT OF TOWN OF ELGIN

The Paper Mill, Lasswade Nestling right on the banks of the River Esk, this former Paper Mill is a bustling, thriving bar and restaurant that is well worth a visit. The menu is popular and accessible but its laid-back gastropubstyle comfort food is never clichéd. Helpfully, it's particularly good for vegetarians and those looking for gluten-free options, while the pricing is pretty reasonable – most mains are in the early to mid-teens. The staff are friendly and the place is child-friendly, although its lack of carpets means it can be noisy.

72 Lothian St, Bonnyrigg | 0131 660 6906 | gigisrestaurant.co.uk

Gigi's, Bonnyrigg Run by mother and son team Marisa and Luigi Pia, this fantastic Italian restaurant near Dalkeith and Rosslyn Chapel has been mobbed by locals since it opened in 2011. Stylish yet relaxed and friendly, it is everything you need from a good-value neighbourhood restaurant. Large, noisy, child-friendly and invariably full-to-bursting, it's one for family meals rather than intimate dining. The menu varies from affordable pizza and pasta for around a tenner to more top-end dishes like lobster surf 'n turf for £33. The wine list is full of Italian classics. Go: you won't be disappointed.

2 Westmill Rd, Lasswade | 0131 663 1412 | www.thepapermill-lasswade.co.uk

Crolla's Italian Kitchen, Musselburgh Set in the beautifully light courtyard building which used to be The Glasshouse, this family-run Italian restaurant has become a firm local favourite. There is a whole range of pizza and pasta options, but then there are also huge numbers of authentic Italian dishes too, including the usual suspects (veal Milanese etc.) but also some more off-beat options. The place is comfortable, the staff are friendly and it's a dream venue for al-fresco eating when the sun is out, although it can get a little busy. RESTAURANT FASHION REVIEWS

Fhior 36 Broughton Street, New Town EH1 3SB It’s safe to say that the departure of Scott Smith from Norn the day after picking up its gong for ‘Best Restaurant’ at the Edinburgh Restaurant Awards was something of a shock. In his short time at the helm of the much-lauded and multi-award-winning Norn, he established the Leith restaurant as one of the must-try destinations for local and visiting foodies before the chef and his wife Laura exited. They have turned up on Broughton Street in their own restaurant, named ‘Fhior’, which is an adaptation of the Gaelic word for ‘true’. Smith told me he’s ‘free to do whatever I want’ at Fhior, and he’s certainly lived up to that aim with an idiosyncratic set menu of either four or seven courses showcasing his remarkable talent. Each dish is a tiny yet perfectly formed explosion of taste. The title of each dish is three of four words, but the mix of the complementary (chicken, mushroom, barley, lovage), unexpected combinations (lobster, rhubarb, cucumber) and obscure ingredients (bulrush, guanciale, chamomile) demands your attention. Like the decor of his new restaurant, Smith’s dishes are uncluttered, bright and fresh; pared-down yet bursting with personality. My favourite was the hogget with baby gem lettuce, pea and goats curd, but the white chocolate, beremeal (Smith’s signature) and seaweed was also a treat. Two well-judged dishes – halibut, rainbow chard and salt marsh herbs to start, and strawberry, amaranth and nasturtium to finish – completed the ensemble. As at Norn, foraging isn’t so much a preoccupation as an obsession No appreciation of Fhior would be complete without mention of the memorable paired wines. Whether it was the hatzidakis from Santorini, Christelle Guibert’s rich orange Itata Muscat or the incredible biodynamic Beck Ink 2016, sommelier Stuart Skea’s bravura selection of paired wines comfortably lived up to Smith’s food – and that’s no mean feat. The Urban Fox 19-21 Causewayside EH9 1QF Located near Summerhall and the Meadows, this laid-back eatery offers flavours from around the globe and some nice veggie options. Scottish mussels; beetroot and coriander falafel; and salt and pepper squid are some of the starters on offer or you can try a selection as a sharing platter, with three priced at £12 and five at £18. Twice-cooked pork belly is a best-seller for mains, but I went for fish and chips, which was perfectly cooked and generously portioned. CC 0131 662 6766 | @urbanfoxedin 28 |

JOHNSTONS NEW RESTAURANTS OF ELGIN

The Newbies

The SF Edinburgh reviewing team sample six of the best new restaurants on the capital’s dining scene Reviews by Richard Bath, Morag Bootland, Crystal Chesters, Steph Abbot, Maddie Smith and Shona Smith

The Carnivore 208 Cowgate, Old Town EH1 1LL This new kid on the ‘chopping’ block offers more than steak and chips. We started with the unique but delicious confit duck nuggets followed by a 10oz sirloin for myself and a 16oz rib-eye for my partner. Both were cooked to perfection. Our sauces of choice were the three peppercorn and chimichurri, along with sides of thick cut chips and spiced cauliflower, all very well seasoned. There’s an extensive wine and cocktail menu and I had their lovely espresso martini for a twist on after dinner coffee. SA 0131 466 4723 | carnivoreedinburgh.co.uk SF EDINBURGH

NEW RESTAURANTS

The Little Chartroom 30-31 Albert Place, Leith Walk EH7 5HN Chef Roberta Hall worked at The Kitchin for three years before spending six years at Castle Terrace, where she eventually became head chef. The Little Chartroom – named after her love of sailing – is the first restaurant for Hall and partner Shaun McCarron, who managed Castle Terrace. Halfway down Leith Walk, the atmosphere at this tiny 18-cover restaurant is that of a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant, but the dishes are as expertly prepared as you would expect from a chef of Hall’s experience and quality.

The vegetarian options – a starter of heritage tomatoes with feta, white balsamic and a watermelon soup, and a main course of ricotta and parmesan gnudi (a lighter gnocchi) with charred corn and greens – were excellent. So, too, were my bijou starter of raw mackerel with gooseberries, cucumber and wood sorrel, while the trio of lamb (rump, croquette and kidney) with anchovy potatoes and hispi cabbage were the highlight. The puddings were solid, the portions weren’t always huge and some of the prices (£23 for the lamb) were a bit toppy, but overall this is a welcome addition to this fast-gentrifying part of town. RB 0131 556 6600 | www.thelittlechartroom.com

Souq 57-59 South Clerk Street, Newington EH8 9PP With ornate lanterns hanging from the ceiling, tapestries on the walls and a belly dancer strutting her stuff, Souq certainly lives up to its name. We started with a wonderful Sujuk stew served with thick, pillowy flatbread, lamb mince parcels and baba ganoush. Hearty and flavoursome chicken and lamb meatball tagines followed and by the time our desserts of gooey baklava and Turkish delight arrived, a whole table of ladies were dancing with the belly dancer. Great fun. MS 0131 667 6601 | www.souq-edinburgh.com SF EDINBURGH

NEW RESTAURANTS

Grand Cafe 20 North Bridge, City Centre EH1 1TR The former home of The Scotsman newspaper on North Bridge is now grand by name as well as by nature. The décor is reminiscent of continental cafes, rich in marble pillars and period features. The menu encompasses an entire day of dining, from brunch to dinner via lunch, afternoon tea and snacks. Chef Chris Niven reached the finals of Masterchef: The Professionals in 2017. The Scottish scallops were huge and sweet, paired with venison salami and a burnt apple puree. The Isle of Arran haggis croquettes didn’t last long enough for me to acquire even a morsel.

My superfood salad was packed with more virtuous grains and veggies than you could shake a stick at. As tasty as it was I couldn’t help casting longing glances at the table next to us who were ooohing and ahhhing over the braised ox cheek and bone marrow cottage pie. The burger was well worth the hefty price tag (£12.95). To balance my goody two shoes main I plumped for the dessert trio – a superbly creamy chilled vanilla rice pudding, a chocolate and brown butter ganache and a light Earl Grey crème brulee. Heaven for a sweet tooth. Grand Cafe is achingly beautiful and the food is really, really good. What’s not to like? MB 0131 622 2999 | www.scotsmanhotel.co.uk

Los Amigos 17 Dalry Road, Dalry EH11 2BQ Dalry is an often overlooked place to eat, but we received a really warm welcome here from the friendly staff. The prawns in my king prawn starter were huge and beautifully presented with a rosa sauce. Nachos were also huge with all the toppings served on the side, just how I like it. For mains we chose a fillet and a sirloin with a few sides to share. Following the theme, the steaks were huge, cooked to perfection and delicious. We managed to squeeze in a dessert of traditional Argentinian sauce (delicious toffee caramel) served with a waffle and ice cream. SS 0131 337 4477 | www.losamigossteakhouse.com SF EDINBURGH

hen Julie Allan and her family moved into their property on Gillespie Street it bore very little resemblence to the family home that it is today. The house had been an HMO and was decidedly unloved. The Allan’s got the keys just before Christmas and only had time to paint the walls and hastily decorate a tree in time for the big day. ‘I’m naturally quite pared back in my choice of interior style,’ says Julie. ‘But this is a Georgian house and that just didn’t suit the character of the building.’ So after scraping off at least 15 layers of old paint and wallpaper Julie could eventually start transforming the house. The cosy living room features a grey palette, but succeeds in remaining light and airy. Flashes of mustard in the soft furnishings and armchairs, which came

‘I wanted to retain the Georgian feel, but I didn’t want it to be a museum’ from Made, provide colour. The solid oak floors, stripped press door and intricate cornincing ensure that the room retains a period feel. ‘It was important to make this a family home,’ says Julie. ‘Although I wanted to retain the Georgian feel of the house I didn’t want it to be a museum.’ Julie sourced lots of bits and bobs for her home, including the lovely over mantle mirror from Tipi, a shop in Bruntsfield that Julie regularly frequents with her children Oliver and Bella. 38 |

Period features and intricate cornicing in the master bedroom.

The striking staircase – which is lit by a large window looking out over the convent behind and Julie’s very peaceful neighbours – leads up to the master bedroom and dining room on the first floor. The fireplace and wardrobes in the master bedroom were gumtree finds. ‘You can get great bargains on gumtree and these old pieces work perfectly in a period property,’ says Julie. They also work beautifully with Julie’s great grandfather’s writing bureau which sits in the corner. Up another flight of stairs the children’s rooms are decorated in a neutral palette but with their choices of brightly coloured and animal print soft furnishings to add their own personal touches. The family bathroom is a tranquil space with the only pattern being cleverly

used on the f loor tiles to ensure that once you are in the tub there is nothing to distract you from relaxation. The walls thorughout Julie’s home are graced by her own photography, particularly striking are her monochrome images of New York city.

‘Old pieces work perfectly in a period property’ Julie has created a perfect family home in a great area of the capital with lots of green spaces, restaurants, shops and bars and is now ready for her next challenge. 4 Gillespie Street is currently on the market through Warners Solicitors.

MY CITY FASHION GARDEN

My city garden Dr Ian Wallace moved to Rivaldsgreen House with his wife 36 years ago and although some of the garden was well established there were areas that required work. Ian and his wife, who was a keen gardener, worked together to create a really special garden. When Ian’s wife passed away six years ago he employed the services of Alan Brown, a gardener who helps Ian keep the garden ship shape. ‘It’s a real joint effort with Alan,’ says Ian. ‘We regularly sit down for a cup of tea and chat through our ideas for the garden.’ But Ian doesn’t like to plan too much and describes his style of gardening as ‘serendipitous’. ‘I buy lots of plants from Klondyke Garden Centre, Binnie Plants and New Hopetoun Garden Centre, but I’ve also bought lots from the supermarket. They are small, but the quality is usually good.’ Ian’s 1.5 acre garden is blessed with good acid soil and he has success growing azaleas, magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons. Ian has glorious clematis climbing up trees as well as a hydrangea petiolaris growing up the house. Latin names hold no fear for Ian, who studied Latin at school and during his training and time as a doctor. The gardens at Rivaldsgreen House open annually under Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and for Linlithgow Burgh Beautiful.

nose for business is essential to Imogen RussonTaylor, the lady behind Kingdom, Scotland’s only perfume house. Having previously worked in the whisky industry Imogen knew that she had a well trained sense of smell but feared that ‘the scents that I came up with lacked depth.’ When Imogen teamed up with perfume maker Euan McCall they were able to blend, bottle and mature three scents that tell the story of Scotland. ‘Making perfume is like creating a work of art,’ says Imogen. ‘I sometimes have difficulty putting the brush down, but you need to know when to stop.’ Kingdom Scotland’s fragrances are all unisex and are tied deeply to their Scottish heritage. Even the packaging gives a nod to the house’s capital home, using a typeface designed by Miller & Richard, a type foundry that closed it’s doors in the city in 1952. Metamorphic is inspired by Scotland’s complex geology, the smouldering smokiness representative of the heat and pressure of rock formation.

And some might say inspired by Imogen’s former career in the whisky industry. Portal is a gateway to Scotland’s ancient forests. This herbaceous and woody scent is created with bergamot on a base of vetiver and pine. Albaura invokes the freshness of ice and snow with Arctic poppy at its heart. This fragrance was inspired by Isobel

‘Three scents that tell the story of Scotland’ Wylie Hutchison who was an Arctic explorer and botanist, born in West Lothian in 1889 she travelled widely and wrote for National Geographic, amongst other publications. Her love of cold places has helped Imogen to create a fresh, bold and pure fragrance in her honour. Kingdom Scotland’s first collection of fragrances is released as limited edition, numbered bottles which have all been created, matured and bottled right here in Edinburgh for a true scent of home. www.kingdomscotland.com

FASHION BEAUTY

Stay golden Housed within Radisson Blu Edinburgh’s sleek subterranean Melrose Spa, stylish salon Sleeping Beauty is a destination for all things beautiful. Here Spa Manager Jessica Roestenburg reveals her end of summer beauty tips

1. Post-holiday you should exfoliate regularly. Many people avoid this for fear of lifting their tan but regular exfoliation leaves skin looking radiant and fresh. It also lifts dead skin cells and prevents them from building on the surface of the skin, allowing product to absorb to a deeper level which is key for hydration. 2. Invest in a post summer intensive facial to fix sun damage. My favourite is our Elemis BIOTEC Anti-Pigment Brightener (£75) an illuminating treatment that dynamically tackles the appearance of uneven skin tone, discolouration and age spots. The unique complex of brightening actives combined with ultrasonic peel and light therapy reveal a youthful and translucent complexion. 3. Keep that summer glow by staying hydrated. Drink 6-8 glasses of water and invest in a product to help combat dry skin. Our luxury handmade Sleeping Beauty Souffle (£24.50) is a dreamy ‘cream to oil’ blend of shea butter, sweet almond oil and essential oils which deeply hydrate and nourish the skin. And for the face you can’t beat Elemis Exotic Cream moisture mask (£40) for deeply hydrating skin. Apply on cleansed skin twice a week and simply sleep in it. 4. Wear sunscreen. Even after your holiday it’s so important to wear sunscreen – I do so all year round. Look for a sunscreen that gels and absorbs into the skin with no less than SPF30. 5. Use essential oils. The health benefits of aromatherapy include relieving anxiety and depression, boosting energy levels, speeding up the healing process, aiding headaches and cognition, boosting sleep, digestion and circulation. Keep that feel-good holiday factor with some oils after a shower or bath for deeper absorption.

Treatment reviews REV IEWED BY MORAG B O OT L AN D

Signature Oskia Glow Facial The spa at The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square Hotel is a brand spanking new oasis of calm. The pool area with sauna and steam room are lovely if you have time. The spa offers treatments from Oskia and ishga. I plumped for the Signature Oskia Glow Facial, £90 for 80 minutes, promising anti-ageing properties and to leave my mind and body rejuvenated. My therapist was friendly, explaining exactly how the treatment would progress and enquiring as to the needs of my skin. The facial employs acupressure and massage to aid relaxation, as well as thoroughly cleansing the skin and using steam to open up the pores and increase the efficacy of the organic products. The choice of a scalp or arm and hand massage made this facial a treat for the whole body. 0131 341 3718, www.phcompany.com

BTL Unison Cellulite Reduction Using radio frequency and targeted pressure, BTL Unison is the latest weapon in the fight against cellulite. It’s a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment which is performed at Zen Lifestyle’s Bruntsfield salon. After a thorough consultation and deciding which areas to target (thighs and bum) my therapist Hannah used a hand held device emitting powerful radio frequency and acoustic waves. The sensation is warm and the pressure and vibrations akin to a massage, making the experience really rather relaxing. Treating two areas took just over an hour and thanks to before and after photos we were able to compare the results instantly. I was delighted with the firming and lifting effect after just one treatment, although the salon recommends a course of six to dramatically improve the appearance of cellulite and give optimum toning and tightening. £1,800 for six sessions on one area. 0131 516 3768, zen-lifestyle.com

ZORBING

It’s all downhill from here...

Zorbing is an extreme activity which sees participants securely strapped into a giant inflatable ball before hurtling downhill at speeds of around 25mph. Rolling Haggis is located next to Midlothian Snow Centre at Hillend, giving brave souls the chance to roll down the Pentland Hills on the UK’s fastest zorb run for fun. Choose to go into the ball with water (hydro zorbing) or without (harness zorbing), depending on your preference. There’s even a haggis pen, where younger children can climb into a hamster ball and safely roll around. zorbedinburgh.co.uk

Grand days out or Grandchildren.

WE’LL SHAPE EACH DAY AROUND YOU My goodness, our residents have very different stories to tell: it’s just one of the reasons why individual care is at the heart of every Randolph Hill nursing home. Take Jean, for example. Jean grew up by the coast, where the stormy seas and stunning skies sparked her love of painting. Working by day as a florist she’d save up and treat herself to afternoon tea with her friends at one of Edinburgh’s grand hotels of the day. Knowing Jean as we do helps us shape daily activities and events around her. Whether it’s painting with her grandchildren, enjoying a trip to the local tearoom for a tasty teacake or simply taking it easy. Our minibus and supportive staff mean Jean can do as much or as little as she feels comfortable with. At Randolph Hill we have an in-depth knowledge of all our residents. It helps us form meaningful connections and enables us to provide exceptional levels of personal care. With over 30 years experience and homes right across Scotland, we pride ourselves on providing exemplary 24 hour nursing care with high quality accommodation and facilities. So as well as a grand days out, Jean will always enjoy grand days in at Randolph Hill.

THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh The British Comedy Award winning ventriloquist and daughter of actor Tom Conti has always had a soft spot for the capital WORDS BY NINA C ONTI

I’ve been visiting Edinburgh since I was a kid because my grandparents lived here. I first started coming to the festival when I was 13, and remember going to Late and Live and feeling marked for life. The Fringe is such an explosion of different art forms running 24 hours and packed into this beautiful, walkable city. I don’t think there’s anything else that compares in terms of artistic fun or self-absorption. While I’m in Edinburgh, my favourite thing to do is to roll down the slope of grass that runs down outside the National Gallery Cafe. It’s pretty white knuckle stuff. After that slope my favourite place in Edinburgh would be the Royal Botanical Gardens. Although a bit further out, there’s possibly an even better grass slope outside

98 |

098_sfe07.indd 98

the Modern Art Gallery. Edinburgh has really nailed it with the grass slopes and art gallery combo. My favourite place to eat is The Outsider. Nice view, nice food, but sadly no grass slope.

‘The Fringe is an explosion of different art forms’ The Fringe is great for a comedian because we rarely get to control the variables of the places we play. Here we have a venue for a month and can find a rhythm. If I only had one day to explore Edinburgh I would wander about its cobbled streets and secret staircases. But don’t try to roll down these...
