o, it’s that time of year again where we say a little prayer for our livers, hope we don’t make a fool of ourselves at the office Christmas party and try desperately not to go near a set of scales until January. And don’t get me started on the subject of shopping for Christmas presents, a process which culminates (hopefully) in joy for our nearest and dearest, but which seems to involve inordinate amounts of tedium and trudgery. If that all sounds a tad Scrooge-like, then it’s not meant to because I actually love this time of year. It’s a period when Edinburgh is at its best: crisp, cold days, and fun-fi lled evenings when there’s so much to do, and friends and family around to

If you want to get a real sense of how insanely busy the next few weeks will be, take a look at our ‘What’s On’ pages, which are packed with amazing things to do. Whether it’s pantos and musicals, or more cultural pursuits like exhibitions and talks, the schedule is absolutely rammed. And don’t forget those uniquely Edinburgh events – the Loony Dook, Musselburgh Races, Powderhall Sprint and, of course, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. So much to do, and so many wonderful places to do it...

ow busy and bustling with animals, visitors and volunteers, it’s hard to believe that less than two years ago, Gorgie Farm found itself just days away from closing. The withdrawal of long-term funding along with rising costs threw the

‘We’ve had parents and teachers argue with us that milk comes from a factory like juice does’ future of the farm into question. But rather than shutting up shop, the decades-old community project was thankfully saved. Upon realising their dismal financial position in early 2016, the farm quickly launched a crowdfunding campaign, which was met with heart-warming support. Over £100,000 was raised in just six weeks. Unlike many other crowdfunding campaigns, which see fewer, larger donations, the average donation was just £14. Thousands of individuals chose to offer their support, the bulk of whom were from the local area. This quick cash influx bought the farm much-needed time to restructure

farm’s presence – remains unchanged. What has changed is its future outlook. Chief executive Josiah Lockhart says, ‘We have an interesting model mixing farming, education and working with people with support needs through our supported volunteering and training programme. In addition to this, we are a visitor attraction with around 220,000 visitors per year.’ Education is a significant part of what the farm does, working with over 2,000 schoolchildren every year. Home to pigs, cows, sheep, chickens, ducks and goats, it allows

children to see where food comes from before it arrives in the shops. Josiah explains, ‘I’ve had a child ask if we do boneless chickens on the farm. It sounds absurd but you can imagine how it could seem to someone who has only ever interacted with the food chain through a supermarket.’ A survey by the British Nutrition Foundation revealed the serious lack of knowledge British children have about where their food comes from. A third of five- to seven-year-olds think cheese comes from a plant, and research from Cadbury has stated that a third of British children don’t know that milk comes from a cow. Josiah continued, ‘We’ve had parents and teachers argue with us that milk comes from a factory like juice does. But that’s why we’re here. Educating people about where food comes from allows us to make better choices.’ Arable education is important and visiting school groups help to plant and dig up vegetables. Recently, groups have grown their own wheat, which they harvested, ground down to flour and made into pancakes. The animals from the farm are the main attraction for young visitors but don’t merely serve the purpose of getting people through the gate. All the livestock on the farm will eventually make their way into the food chain. Clockwise from top: Sarah Campbell in the education garden; Luke Parker, Obo Idornigia, Scott Walker and Norman Valentine get to grips with fencing on a corporate team building day; Gorgie farm is in the heart of the city; Josiah and one of the farm’s resident pigs; Amanda Dickson and Edgar the ferret.

Josiah laughs, ‘We do sometimes have children leave saying they’re going to become vegetarian, but that’s OK as it’s a choice made for an educated reason.’ Securing the long-term future of the farm is an ongoing priority and it has branched out to include a pet boarding business accommodating everything except cats and dogs. Previous holiday guests have included rats, tortoises and even an owl. The farm also has a collection of smaller animals used for education and as part of volunteering and training programmes. There are over 500 volunteers with around 100 contributing per week. Josiah explains, ‘A lot of the people on our programmes come here with emotional or mental health needs and working with a large animal may not be the easiest thing for them. So, we developed a project around small domestic animals, like rabbits and guinea pigs.’ As Gorgie Farm turns 40, the staff have been toasting four decades at the heart of a community. In celebration, the farm held a festival with over 7,000 visitors in a day. They also held a dinner with chefs Fred Berkmiller from L’escargot Bleu and Blanc and Rosario Sartore from Locanda De Gusti cooking up a five-course feast for special guests using one of the farm’s goats. It’s clear that things are changing down on the farm and its future has never looked brighter. www.gorgiecityfarm.org.uk WWW.SFEDINBURGH.CO.UK

Dean Village Between the Georgian streets of the West End and the Water of Leith lies Dean Village, the origins of which are thought to date back to the 12th century. Its industry centred around milling, with mills taking advantage of the strong currents of the Water of Leith. It remained a separate village until the 19th century when construction of Dean Bridge began. Built by Thomas Telford, the bridge spans a width of over 400 feet and rises 106 feet above the water level of the river below. As the industrialisation of Leith continued, more and more of the mills moved away from Dean Village. Today it is known for being a tranquil residential area. While it is still up for debate as to whether Dean Village is really part of the West End, visitors can easily reach it within a few minutes’ walk from the end of Princes Street.

T

he West End of Edinburgh is much like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Due to several years of chaos caused by the tram works and other redevelopment projects close by, which saw businesses close and visitors avoid the area, the West End has now risen from the ashes, or more accurately, the building dust. Now more vibrant and colourful than ever, this gem of an area has been given a new lease of life.

‘Charlotte Square was originally built to mirror St Andrew Square’ As part of the New Town, the West End has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. The New Town was built in stages between 1767 and around 1850 and retains neo-classical and Georgian period architecture. The West End has a very distinct pattern of broad streets and crescents and was designed in 1813 by James Gillespie Graham. It began to thrive as a business district in the 1800s with the creation of several successful Georgian shopping streets, establishing itself as a vibrant community, distinct from the New Town. One of the best preserved examples of its historical shopping streets is William Street, which still retains some of the original shop fronts. The street was built in 1825 SF EDINBURGH

to provide cheaper housing for workers and shops for the nearby affluent individuals living on the sweeping terraces of the area. So well preserved is the street, it has been used as a set for several films and television shows, including North and South, and the David Jason series, Micawber. Close by is the impressive Charlotte Square, originally built to mirror St Andrew Square at the east end of Princes Street. In the plans for the development, it was to be called St Georges Square, however the name

Image: Stafford Street, looking towards Melville Street.

‘The West End is also home to one of Edinburgh’s lost train stations’ was changed to Charlotte Square to avoid confusion with George Square in the south of the city. The square is centred around private gardens, which include a statue of Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria. It was built in the years following his death and was unveiled by Queen Victoria herself in 1876. Several buildings on the square are now owned by the National Trust for Scotland including Number 6, Bute House which is the official residence of the First Minister of Scotland. West Register House, now housing the National Records of Scotland, opened as St George’s Church in 1814. It was converted to its current use in 1964. The square was also home to notable residents including Sir William Fettes, whose bequest founded Fettes College and Field-Marshal Earl Haig who was commander-in-chief of the Western Front during the First World War. 20 |

The historical residents of the West End are a mixed and eclectic group with several notable physicians residing in the area. Walker Street was home to the medical practice of Elsie Inglis between 1898 and 1914. Elsie was a pioneer for women in medicine as well as a leading suffragette. She set up Edinburgh’s first maternity hospital and the Scottish Women’s Hospital helping allied soldiers during the First World War. Another well known character of the area was Professor Joseph Bell, who lived on Melville Crescent, named after Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville. Famously the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Joseph Bell was an eminent surgeon and met Doyle in 1877 whilst Doyle was studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Doyle worked as Bell’s clerk and was said to be captivated by the surgeon’s ability to observe diminutive details about his patients and analyse them from their appearance. After Doyle had found success with his Sherlock Holmes series, he wrote to Bell and said, ‘It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes.’ The West End is also home to one of Edinburgh’s lost train stations. Princes Street station, also known as the ‘Caley’ was the largest train station in Scotland stretching from Rutland Street to Festival Square. As part of the terminal, the Caledonian Hotel, built to rival what is now The Balmoral at the opposite end of Princes St, was opened in 1903. The station was closed in 1965 but visitors to Peacock Alley within the hotel can catch a glimpse of days gone by with the bar area, now enclosed, once being the station concourse and the old station clock can still be seen. Present-day visitors to the area can discover the West End’s past by exploring the historical trail created by Edinburgh World Heritage and Edinburgh’s West End. The area is also home to the multi-awardwinning, small-batch Edinburgh Gin distillery, discreetly tucked away under the Rutland Hotel, as well as a variety of bars and restaurants including Home, part of Social Bite, which last year received a visit from Hollywood actor, Leonardo DiCaprio. Each August, the West End hosts the Edinburgh International Book Festival, which takes up residence on Charlotte Square. Welcoming around 220,000 visitors to over 800 events, the festival attracts Nobel and Booker prize-winners, musicians, poets, illustrators and historians. With so much going on it’s easy to see why, for the residents of the West End, west is most definitely best.

s the debate about when is too early to put up the decorations ressurects itself for yet another year, the Christmas season is already well underway for professional decorator, Liz Thomson. Starting at the beginning of August, she creates all the decorations for Edinburgh’s beloved venue, The Dome on George Street. Each of the Christmas decorations are made from scratch, including the tree and garlands, which are put together by hand. Liz is

assisted by her team, which fluctuates from eight during the planning stage to around 20 for the hanging of the decorations, which takes seven nights to complete at the start of November. The Dome will remain decorated until around 6 January when the work will begin again to carefully pack decorations away for next year. Despite the decorations being taken down, the work doesn’t stop there for Liz who looks after the plants in the venue all year round. www.thedomeedinburgh.com

RESTAURANT FASHION REVIEWS

Bistro Deluxe by Paul Tamburrini 81 Holyrood Road, EH8 8AU Attached to the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel, but with its own, rather grand entrance, Bistro Deluxe is the first solo project by Paul Tamburrini. Don’t be surprised if you recognise the name, Tamburrini has an impressive 30 year pedigree, working with Marco Pierre White in London before moving on to some well kent Scottish restaurants including Martin Wishart, Rogano, Cameron House and One Devonshire Gardens. Bistro Deluxe is a big space, it can do 80 covers. The food is French influenced and there’s a good value prix fixe menu and a kids menu too, but as MR B and I were enjoying a date night we headed directly for the a la carte. Never one to remain on piste, Mr B chose a special of orkney scallop with hand-rolled tagliatelle and black truffle oil. The scallops were enormous, quite possibly the largest I’ve ever seen, and their sweetness was perfectly balanced by the richness of the truffle. He followed up with another dish that isn’t on the regular menu, a meaty chunk of halibut with cockles and mussels in a coconut and chorizo broth. Perfectly cooked and exploding with flavour. I plumped for a deliciously fresh seabream ceviche with anchovy, cucumber and ponzu and in a bid to return to dry land a medium rare rib-eye steak with peppercorn sauce and a side of hand-cut chips. We also indulged in a side of spiced honey carrots. Indulged isn’t normally a word I would use to describe the consumption of root veg, but believe me when I say these were more butter, honey and spice than carrot. Puds didn’t disappoint, with a zingy upside down key lime ‘pie’ with a coconut sorbet being the highlight. A special nod should go to the front of house staff who were all exceptionally friendly and professional. The restaurant had only been open for six weeks when we visited but was fairly quiet for a Friday evening. Although the bistro is tucked away down Holyrood Road I’m sure when words gets out they’ll be beating a path to its door. MB 0344 879 9028 | www.facebook.com/BistroDeluxePT

Trenchtown 4-8 Lochrin Buildings, EH3 9NB Stepping into sunny, Jamaican eatery, Trenchtown, with its pineapple-coloured booths and head-bopping soundtrack, is a treat in itself. To start, we tried Fiery Fried Squid, Garlic and Chilli BBQ King Prawns and the deliciously doughy Trinidadian Doubles – each moreish, if a little filling. For mains the chunky Red Snapper had an eye-watering side of pineapple but I would ‘big up’ the Original Trini Chicken Curry cooked in coconut milk and mango. The Fat Pony 47/49 Bread Street, EH3 9AH This addition to David Ramsden’s culinary menagerie is a wine bar serving small plates of loveliness. Chef, Rose Gregory creates these wee gems in a kitchen so tiny that it barely exists. There’s a choice of charcuterie and cheese boards and a selection of tapas style plates on the menu. We found it easier to choose which of the plates we wouldn’t try (although we would gladly have had them all). Top picks are the duck hearts and the lamb shawarma. The Ivy on the Square 6 St Andrew Square, EH2 2BD Acres of newsprint and social media space have been devoted to The Ivy on the Square since its recent opening. Many of my journalistic colleagues seem to have a downer on the place because it’s part of a chain designed to cash in on the lustre of the Ivy in London. One damned it as sub-Cote but at twice the price. As someone who’s been to The Ivy in London and wasn’t impressed – it was a soulless and frighteningly expensive experience that won’t be repeated any time soon – I arrived at its Edinburgh namesake with low expectations. These were thoroughly confounded because the place was rammed full of excitable diners, the food was sensibly priced (with most mains at under £15), the service was exceptional, and – most of

all – the bistro-style dishes were actually rather good. Our starters of tuna carpaccio with a ponzu dressing and steak tartare were both excellent and showed that top ingredients had been used. The main courses were equally impressive: my slowroasted lamb shoulder with mash and a gloriously rich reduction was a wonderful example of comfort food, and exactly what was needed on a cold Edinburgh evening. James’s blackened cod fillet was perfectly cooked and came with nicely al dente pak choi. The quality endured through to pudding, with the classic Scottish dish of burnt cream faultlessly produced, while my cherry ice cream sundae was an enjoyably juvenile melange of ice cream, meringues, pistachio, shortbread and warm cherry sauce. So my advice is to avoid the naysayers and get down to St Andrew Square. RB 0131 526 4777 | www.theivyedinburgh.com

JOHNSTONS NEW RESTAURANTS OF ELGIN

Ting Saboteur 19-20 Teviot Place, EH1 2QZ Sister of the nearby Ting Thai Caravan, Ting Saboteur is the newest establishment to take up residence on Teviot Place. With an industrial interior and communal seating, it’s best suited to a casual lunch with friends. The cari rang voi mang red curry was a particular highlight, tasty with plenty of fresh vegetables and tofu as well as the kee mao noodles, which were overflowing with tender chicken pieces. On the side we went for some goi cuon summer rolls which were packed with tofu and vermicelli noodles and served with a spicy dipping sauce. The bao buns are not to be missed either and we plumped for the slow braised pork belly option which was flavoursome and the meat tender. Aimed at the nearby student population, the dishes are well priced and great value for money. The staff were friendly and knowledgable making Ting Saboteur defintely worth a visit. Cafe Andaluz 10-11 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EE With the George Street cafe having been a firm favourite for many years, it was no surprise to hear of a second premises opening on George IV Bridge. The new offering is decorated in a classic Spanish style with modern touches and our table had an incredible view of the castle and George Heriot’s. We shared six tapas, which was plenty for two. The pork cheeks in red wine were deliciously tender and the lightly battered cod was indulgent without being greasy, complemented by a tangy aioli. The churros for dessert were the best I’d ever tasted. MS 0131 226 1002 | www.cafeandaluz.com SF EDINBURGH

SIX FASHION OF THE BEST

Bring your own These are six of our favourite places that operate a Bring Your Own Bottle policy

The Table This wonderful little restaurant is one of the capital’s finest and quirkiest. Chef Sean Clark creates Michelin-quality dishes in an open kitchen, while ten diners on bar stools watch on and ask questions while Sean cooks and chats. It’s a great concept and has been so popular that booking ahead is vital. The restaurant has no licence and there’s a £5 corkage charge per bottle.

0131 281 1689 | 3a Dundas St, New Town | thetableedinburgh.com

Tuk Tuk This Bollywood-themed Indian tapas restaurant is one of the city’s true gems. Bright, noisy, bustling and outstanding value at roughly £5 per dish, the street food-style dishes are also excellent. Creations such as the Railway station lamb curry with spinach, the puri yoghurt bombs and the channa puri will have you coming back for more, and make sure you try the home-made lemonade (called sikanji). There’s a 50p corkage charge per table.

Pomegranate This relaxed Middle Eastern restaurant opposite the Playhouse Theatre at the top of Leith Walk does great mezze, so is perfect for a chilled evening out. It does all of the usual staples – falafel, hummus, aubergine mezze, kebabs, baklava – and the shisha pipe is always on the go, with twelve flavours to choose from if you wish. Joyously there is no corkage charge (the nearest source of wine is Tesco on Picardy Place). 0131 556 8337 | 1 Antigua St, New Town | pomegranatesrestaurant.com

Vietnam House This little restaurant near Haymarket is one of my favourite places to eat in the capital, full stop (although the prices have gone up significantly from when it first opened). Run by a mother and daughter from Hanoi, the food is completely and gloriously authentic, whether you’re choosing spring rolls and pho noodle soup or their special house creamy curry. Don’t forget to round off the meal with a glass of deliciously creamy Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk and ice. The corkage is £1.50 per person.

0131 558 1947 | 10 Antigua Street, New Town | khushis.com

Kushis This venerable curry house at the top of Leith Walk has moved around the capital since opening in Potterow eighty years ago, but never gets tired or cliched. The site is huge, with space for 230 people, but never feels shed-like, while the authentic dishes are a cut above the standard Indian restaurant fare. Decent value and with a sizeable number of vegetarian options, it’s little wonder legions of loyal diners come back time after time. There’s free corkage on wine or beer (no spirits allowed), although you need to take your empties home or be charged 25p per bottle for recycling.

0131 228 3383 | 1-3 Grove St, Haymarket | vietnamhouserestaurant.co.uk

The New York Steam Packet This quirky little American restaurant has been around for ever, but is easily missed given that it’s reached by a spiral staircase and doesn’t shout about itself nearly enough. At £16.50 for a 3-course set menu at the weekend and £14.50 midweek, it’s great value, while the decor is cosy and informal. The sirloin steak, 200g burger and enchilladas are great comfort food. It only holds 34 people, so booking is sensible, especially as they simply don’t open midweek if they have no bookings. Corkage is £1 per person. 0131 220 4825 | 31 Rose St Lane North, Old Town | newyorksteampacket.co.uk

JOHNSTONS MY CITY GARDEN OF ELGIN

My city garden Tucked away off Ravelston Dykes, professional gardener Brian Hunter’s botanical haven has been designed with family get-togethers in mind. Three different seating sections mean that whatever the time of day, there will be an area getting direct sun. Having spent 22 years in the property, Brian has crafted and changed the garden over the years to adapt to his family. After the arrival of grandchildren, Brian’s koi carp pond had to be filled in for safety reasons and, in its place, a sitting area created.

Trees shaped with ornamental pruning line the driveway whilst others throughout the garden are left in natural form. The garden is hemmed by herbaceous borders with pops of colour coming from fuchsias and hydrangea, acers and heather. Wisteria climbs up the walls of the house and a good mix of plants ensures there is colour in the garden at all times of the year. Brian’s day-job is running Hunter’s Garden services and his accomplished garden is testament to what he can do.

hen Pamela McGowan made the decision to move to Edinburgh, she had no idea she would be stepping back in time to her childhood home in Tranent. After years spent down south, she describes it as fate when, on her last night of a brief visit to the area in 2012, she passed her childhood home and noticed a ‘for sale’ sign. Having lived in the home between 1957 and 1965 she snapped it up. ‘I tried to buy it without seeing it but my solicitor recommended I view it. I recall thinking how small it was compared to what I remembered from childhood.’ It had lain empty for a few months before Pamela moved in and prior to this it had been let out, and was somewhat shabby when

she took the keys. Retiree Pamela recalls feeling overwhelmed on her first night in the property when the scale of what needed done hit her. She recalls, ‘The fireplace wasn’t even attached to the wall and there was a large section of wall with no wallpaper because there had been damp. I had to get the gas board in to do a service but they condemned the fire. It was liveable but very run down.’ The transformation of the property began shortly after she moved in, with the help of expert interior designer Sally Homan, design director, Robertson Lindsay Interiors. Pamela said, ‘I thought “oh well” I can ask Sally for help, just for this one room, which I wanted to look really nice. And I was very, very pleased with the result. It was just a beautiful room. It had been my intention, for financial reasons, to do one room at a time but I was sick of it. I moved into a property close by for two weeks whilst the bathroom was being replaced, the floor lifted and new lighting put in with Sally coordinating everything.’ ‘I love the result and it’s difficult to say which room I like best because I like them all best for different reasons. If I feel in the mood for relaxing I use my sitting room, it doesn’t have a television and I keep my piano in there. My living room / dining room is my everyday room. ‘I sometimes wonder what my dad would think about my buying the house – would he be proud of what I’ve done with it or think I was mad for taking it on?’ From top: Pamela moved out for two weeks while the bathroom was being replaced; the house appeared smaller than she remembered; Robertson Lindsay Interiors transformed the run-down decor.

hen Edinburgh-based knitwear designer Rosie Sugden launched her luxury cashmere brand in 2011, she was certainly following in the family footsteps. Her father and grandparents all made their careers in the Scottish cashmere industry and her brother now runs the iconic Scottish countrywear store, Campbell’s of Beauly. Rosie, a graduate in knitwear design, took the leap and launched her own line following time spent interning with Christopher Kane. Her brand quickly gained loyal followers and top fashion magazines began regularly featuring her designs in their winter

‘Rosie has designed exclusive collections for Harrods, Liberty and Net-a-Porter’ style guides. Her range of cashmere accessories is stocked in several high-end shops, most recently in Bloomingdale’s department store in New York, and she has designed exclusive collections for top stores such as Harrods, Liberty and Net-a-Porter. Rosie runs her business and creates her designs from her base in Edinburgh before products are manufactured at a mill near Hawick, in the Borders. The philosophy of her brand is to create long-lasting products designed to be cherished for a lifetime as opposed to the ‘buy cheap and often’ mentality of the British high street. With winter underway, there’s no better time to splash your cash and indulge in a luxury accessory. www.rosiesugden.com

Festive glow Don’t let your skin be a party-pooper this season

Celebrity facialist Charlotte Connoley shares her tips for skin that glows throughout the party season

T

he lead-up to Christmas is full of temptation, from alcohol to sweet treats and late nights, which can leave your skin looking dull and dehydrated. Skin needs extra care in December and January. Double cleanse before bed with warm water and an oil-based balm or cleanser. The first cleanse gets rid of make-up and the second is to treat skin with what it needs to feel balanced, comfortable and ready for serum or moisturiser. Jurlique Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Lotion is a lovely, lightweight formula that hydrates and protects. Adding a serum to your routine will help boost hydration. La Roche-Posay’s Hydraphase Intense Serum is great for dehydrated, sensitive skin. Use it under

your usual moisturiser and take extra care at bedtime to really work it into skin. Around the eye, use a serum instead of a cream to avoid puffiness. For a lighter daytime alternative, swap your regular foundation for a BB cream. MeMeMe’s Angel Face BB Cream comes in four shades to hydrate and brighten complexions (mememecosmetics.com). Self-tan is great at this time of year. It works for party looks and lifts skin tone, giving complexions a healthy glow. Exfoliate and use a tanning mitt to work from the legs up before sweeping the mitt over feet for a perfect finish. Follow Charlotte on Instagram, @charlotteconnoleybeauty

The treatment began with a calming foot ritual, then a ‘breathe bowl’ was placed under the bed with warm water and essential oils. This was everything a deep tissue massage should be. For those who prefer something more delicate, Maggie did regularly check that the pressure was OK. My back, legs, shoulders and arms were left thoroughly relaxed and the treatment and whole spa experience was faultless. FH £78, www.purespauk.com, 0843 507 1888

Elemis Hot Mineral Boost Opting to drive a little out of town certainly pays dividends for parking, and to enjoy an afternoon of sheer relaxation at the Bannatyne Spa on Newcraighall Road, just off the Edinburgh city bypass. I opted to try out the Elemis Hot Mineral Boost, which promises to stimulate the body, alleviate muscular pain and remove toxins. My therapist, Claire, was friendly and professional, regularly checking that I was comfortable and happy with the pressure during the 55-minute experience. The treatment may have stimulated my body, but my mind was thoroughly relaxed following this aromatic and gently conditioning treat. The relaxation room was a blessing, giving me that all-important time to readjust before facing the outside world. MB £59, www.bannatyne.co.uk, 0344 477 4777

AERIAL YOGA

Image: Hanging in there during a class.

Getting the hang of yoga Hanging upside-down whilst contorting your body into a series of difficult positions may sound like a method of medieval torture to some, but for an increasing number of exercise fanatics, aerial yoga is a great way to feel refreshed and relaxed. Performed in the air and supported by a soft hammock, the classes are led by expert teacher Gillian Watt and aim to allow participants the chance to perform deeper stretching and improve their flexibility more than if they were working on the floor. The novelty of being suspended mid-air helps the class fly by. www.aerialyogaedinburgh.co.uk SF EDINBURGH

THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Author Sara Sheridan reveals why Edinburgh inspires her novels and her feminist perfume range WORDS BY SA RA SHER I DAN

I was born in Edinburgh and grew up here. I went away for a bit but decided to come back. I really love it, it’s a beautiful city. I’m a city girl, which is quite unusual. A lot of people are like ‘Oh, we love being in the country’ but I get really bored in the country. Edinburgh is a really brilliant city. I’m not a great driver, in fact, I’m terrible. So, walking is very important. Edinburgh is such an amazing city to walk around. When I moved to the West End my father said ‘Oh! You’re so far away’. When we measured it on the map it’s only two-and-ahalf miles away but he considered it crazy. I love Dunbar’s Close Garden, just off the High Street. It’s open to the public but a lot of people don’t know it’s there.

98 |

098_sfe11.indd 98

All the research for my novel On Starlit Seas, which was shortlisted for the Wilbur Smith prize, was done in the National Library of Scotland. I love those kind of places and they’re really important to me for part of the writing process. I’ll go in and it’s like mining; you’re mining out the dirt to get to something and then suddenly you find a diamond.

‘I’m a city girl ... I get really bored in the country’ I set up my perfume brand REEK to challenge, among other things, the beauty industry norms. The idea with our perfumes is that they memorialise women. In Edinburgh, we have more statues of animals than of women so our idea was that we should be memorialising women and statues aren’t necessarily the best way to do it. www.sarasheridan.com
