or the past 25 years the brave souls of Edinburgh have spent one night a year without shelter on the pavements of the city in a bid to raise awareness of and, more importantly, money for youth homeless charity, the Rock Trust. The fact that more than 2,000 people have now participated in a Rock Trust Sleep Out and have collectively raised over half a million pounds to help the capital’s young people avoid, resolve or move on from homelessness, is something that the charity are keen to celebrate. To mark this very special milestone, the 2018 Sleep Out will move venue from Festival Square to St Andrew Square and the charity

‘It was a meaningful way to get some perspective’ are hoping for a record turnout. The money collected from sponsorships for Sleep Out is vital to the running of the Rock Trust, which opened its 8 |

first flat for homeless young people in 1993 following the first ever Sleep Out. Twenty-five years later they help 400 young people every year with long-term accommodation in 43 flats, providing advice and crisis support, health and wellbeing support and groups where young people can learn essential life skills like cooking and CV-writing. Ahead of the anniversary on 26 October, the Rock Trust have been asking former Sleep Out participants to send them their memories and photographs from the event. They have now collected an archive of stories and pictures which were unveiled at a special civic reception put on by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh for the charity – an event at which he revealed he had signed up to do the Sleep Out in St Andrew Square this October. charity’s board of trustees and took part in Sleep Out as a student. ‘The Rock Trust Sleep Out is one of my standout memories from university days – it was a meaningful way for our group of friends to get some perspective on our own lives and a better appreciation of the difficulties faced by those forced onto the streets. We did have fun despite the cold and, most importantly, we raised awareness and funds to help ensure other young people didn’t end up sleeping rough.’ Rock Trust CEO Kate Polson is keen to point out that while Sleep Out can’t recreate the difficulties faced by homeless young people, it is a great way for people to think more about the challenges they live with. ‘We have always made it clear that our events are not about replicating the misery and hardships faced by people sleeping rough. It is just one night in the year. Participants are kept safe, there is entertainment, and we provide food and drinks. But if they wake up in the morning after trying to sleep on cardboard in the cold drizzle, and on the way back to their home for a hot shower they think deeply about the reality of the experience they’ve just had a glimpse of, then that’s important.’ SF EDINBURGH

THEFASHION ROCK TRUST Edinburgh University Islamic Society join the Rock Trust Sleep Out in 2017.

The trust was founded in the 1990s due to an increase in youth homelessness which came about due to changes in the benefit system. Telling me how the trust began, Kate says: ‘It was formed because quite often young people were in houses but unable to look after them and themselves. We were formed to help with the transition and to help young people learn in a supportive way all the independent living skills that you need. But we also provided shared housing, rather than an institutional or even individual model, which is normal for young people, so that’s why we were founded and it hasn’t really changed very much.’ The trust works closely with Edinburgh City Council and are there to help young people navigate what can be a complex system and to ensure that they get the services they need. ‘That involves finding out if a return home is possible,’ says Kate, ‘and if it is then we will help with that, but if it’s not then we’ll find them somewhere safe.’ Kate finds it very rewarding to see young people come out the other side of the difficult times that they’ve faced. ‘We always say that we don’t really want repeat custom – so we hope that once people have left us we won’t see them again because they won’t need us. But social media makes 10 |

006-010_sfe09.indd 10

it easier for us to see what’s going on in the lives of some of the young people that we’ve helped in years gone by. So sometimes we can see them on Linkedin and they’ll be really happy in a job and have completely moved on with their life. Sometimes you might be in the supermarket and

‘We help young people learn in a supportive way’ someone you’ve known from years ago pops up from behind the deli counter, which is lovely. ‘ Share your memories with the team by emailing events@rocktrust. org. hen walking through the winding streets of the capital, one witnesses history, architecture, and art merging together in concord to create the city that is Edinburgh. At each turn you find new things to discover – perhaps a bookstore on a corner, a hidden art gallery or a park offering a green haven in the midst of the hustle and bustle. The city has a history that envelops you, reminding you with every step to look closely, for each and every street has a story to tell. 16 |

014-019_sfe09.indd 16

The tale behind Dundas Street begins with an iconic figure in 18th-century Scottish politics, nicknamed ‘the Uncrowned King of Scotland’ or ‘the Great Tyrant’. Henry Dundas, born in Edinburgh in 1742, began his influential career studying Law at the University of Edinburgh. He quickly climbed the ranks of the Scottish legal system, becoming Solicitor General in 1766 and then Lord Advocate in 1775. Those were two of many positions he would have in office. He joined the cabinet in 1791 as Secretary of State for the Home Department, President of the

Board of Control over the East Indian Company from 1793 to 1801, and War Secretary from 1794 to 1801. It was this appointed power along with his well-spoken, persuasive talents

‘Dundas’ nicknames included the Great Tyrant’ that had a big impact on Scotland as we know it today. Many hold Dundas accountable for the abolition of slavery, having

been delayed from 1792 to 1807, as he was heavily opposed to it and used his strengths to obstruct any advancement towards freedom. He was also William Pitt the Younger’s closest advisor during the war against the French Revolution and a key planner of the War of the First Coalition. His next promotion led him to become the First Lord of the Admiralty in 1804. His time there was nevertheless cut short when he was impeached for the misappropriation of public money from the Admiralty. Though he was acquitted, he never again held office. His impeachment in 1806 remains the last in the history of the United Kingdom. Before being renamed Dundas Street in the 1960s, the street carried the name Pitt Street, after William Pitt the Younger, Henry Dundas’ superior and the youngest person ever to serve as Prime Minister. THE TALE OF DUNDAS Main: Street for an art lover. Inset: A man and his pooches out for a stroll

Dundas Street has a strong legacy behind its name, but what it is known for nowadays is its location at the heart of the bustling New Town. The project for the creation of a new residential area was proposed in 1752 with the intention to create more space and better living for Edinburgh’s citizens. It was meant to be a location that would attract the wealthy population from London, which would in turn boost Scotland’s economy. The New Town was completed by 1820, but due to its massive success, kept expanding until 1830 across the east

‘It was meant to be a location that would attract the wealthy’ and west of the city. These developments brought about the creation of Dundas Street, which was born from the extension of Hanover Street. Pitt Street was also created at this time, and later was joined to the former to create the Dundas Street we know today. The designer of the New Town, James Craig, chose to give the streets political SF EDINBURGH

014-019_sfe09.indd 19

names – Princes Street, George Street, Charlotte Square – to reflect Scotland’s desire to improve political and economic relations with England. Today, Dundas Street is teeming with antiques dealers and art galleries and has become the go-to location for art work. There’s also a variety of independent shops selling everything from flowers and toys to stationery, leather goods and handcrafted jewellery. These sit alongside some great restaurants, cafes and bakeries. With so many artistically minded business owners gathered in one place, the street offers creative collectors a variety of opportunities. While the history of Dundas Street’s namesake may be shrouded in controversy, the area remains a popular and vibrant part of the New Town among visitors and locals.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...

A day in the life of... Lifeguard Richard Gurry ensures that swimmers at the Royal Commonwealth Pool are always in safe hands

T

WORDS BY MORAG BOOTL AN D

he work of a lifeguard isn’t quite as glamorous as it’s portrayed on Baywatch, but keeping a watchful eye on swimmers is all in a day’s work for Richard Gurry, who has been a lifeguard at the Royal Commonwealth Pool for the past two-and-a-half years. ‘There’s a lot of cleaning to be done,’ says Richard. ‘As well as setting up for clubs that come into the pool and rooms for meetings. So adding lane ropes in and taking them out, getting diving boards ready or putting water polo goals in.’ The pool also recently played host to the diving at the 2018 European Championships which saw Richard helping to get the poolside area ready for the TV cameras and taking out some of the diving boards. To be a lifeguard you need a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. It’s a week-long training course with an assessment at the end, Richard tells me. ‘They test you on first aid, in the water rescues, basic swimming, spinal injury rescue, poolside rescues, dryside rescues and you’re asked lots of questions about first aid and emergency situations.’ Richard has never had to save anyone poolside and he puts that down to his

training. ‘We’re taught that lifeguard intervention is the best way. So if we see a hazard then we’ll stop it.’ However, Richard’s training did see him play a role in saving a life in the gym. ‘A gentleman went into cardiac arrest while I was off shift and training in the gym, so I was the first one there and had to perform CPR, which was thankfully successful. It’s a nice thing to say that I was able to do this, and

‘We are quite close-knit. I know that I can always rely on my colleagues’ it’s definitely down to my lifeguard training. Some people freeze in these situations and I’m not sure I would have been able to react so quickly if it wasn’t for my training. ‘The people I work with are the best thing about the job. Here at the pool we are quite close-knit and I’ve made lots of friends. I know I can always rely on my colleagues. I also love watching the club swimmers. I learn a lot from their coaches. I’m nowhere near as good as them but I think I’ve probably improved even from just sitting in the chair watching them’.

RESTAURANT FASHION REVIEWS

The Fishmarket 24- 25 Pier Place, Newhaven Harbour EH6 4LP I’ve seen a few whoppers in my life, but this was the biggest ever. It was described as simply ‘Fruits of the Sea, a selection of today’s fresh seafood served over ice’, but when our seafood platter starter (£54) arrived, it turned out to be a groaning trencher filled with ice and topped with a tsunami of seafood – a lobster, four langoustines, crab claws, four scallops, endless mussels, cockles and a couple of oysters. When chef Roy Brett of Ondine fame and Edinburgh’s leading fishmonger Gary Welch got together to open a chippy and seafood restaurant on Newhaven Harbour we always knew it was going to be good, and so it has proved. The chippy is constantly stowed out, although that may owe something to the wonderful weather we’ve had lately, but the seafood restaurant is going down a storm too, and rightly so on the basis of our visit. With its huge floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the harbour and minimalist tiled decor, it’s comfortable but utilitarian. It is, unsurprisingly, the seafood which is the main attraction. Before our remarkably good platter we had started with half a dozen oysters, and then moved onto the main course (we simply hadn’t appreciated the platter would be so huge). The main courses are surprisingly good value, with the huge and perfectly cooked cod fillet with chips coming in at £11 and the battered monkfish with Vietnamese dipping sauce at just £10 – both were excellent. Although we were flagging a little, we still had just enough space for a pudding. A small but perfectly formed ramekin of lemon posset (£5) was the star of this course, with ice cream from St Andrews (surely Jannetta’s) coming a close second. There’s so much to like about The Fishmarket and very little to dislike, although I wasn’t sold on the chips. The wine selection was good, and the conspicuously fresh seafood (there’s a tank of live lobsters next door at Welch fishmongers) was absolutely outstanding and sensibly priced – let’s just hope it stays that way... It was huge and extremely tasty. L’escapade is a great place to stop for brunch, a glass of wine, dinner, or to make a night of it. SS 0131 557 0909 | www.facebook.com/lescapadeedinbrugh 28 |

NEW RESTAURANTS

Mono 85 South Bridge, City Centre EH1 1HN This was one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had in years – Joseph Crolla and his team have filled a glaring hole in Edinburgh’s culinary landscape by producing a genuinely excellent fine dining Italian restaurant. With chef Maciek Zielinski, late of the Atelier, working his magic in the kitchen, the tasting menu we ate was a revelation. If I was somewhat surprised, it was mainly because Mono is located on South Bridge, one of the city centre’s earthier and more unlikely venues. Still, the place looks chic, pared-down and contem-

porary, while the food was absolutely outstanding. Sadly there’s not enough room to go into detail on each of the eight courses, but they were all sublime. After a trio of amuses bouche we started with tuna tortellini, then moved through lamb sweetbreads, white truffle risotto, octopus, dry-aged ox cheek, aged parmesan, pine sorbet and cherry and chocolate. Each course came with a paired wine. Mono is not cheap (the tasting menu is £75, with the paired wines £45/75, and a three-course à la carte meal costing £45 plus wine and service) but if our visit was any guide, you won’t be disappointed by this remarkably bold project. 83 Hanover Street 83 Hanover Street, City Centre EH2 1EE Convenient for a quick bite while shopping and with service efficient enough to allow for a working lunch, 83 is a funky wee addition to the city’s dining scene. Some of the highlights amongst our Chilean-inspired bites and plates were sopaipillas pebre (gorgeous pillowy pumpkin breads), charred octopus and beef short rib in a rich tomato sauce. The chef loves his chilli and some of the dishes are not for the faint-hearted. Try the manjar ice cream sandwich to cool the fire. Caramely and heavenly. RESTAURANT REVIEWS

Borough 50-54 Henderson St, Leith EH6 6DE Darren Murray, head chef of Norn, which previously occupied this nook of Henderson Street in Leith, has reopened the space as a contemporary neighbourhood eatery with European flair. The small and larger dishes, priced roughly between the £5 and £14 mark, are elegant yet laid-back and perfect for sharing. Combining a rainbow of textures and flavours, some of the items on the menu when I visited were a delicate courgette tart with nasturtium and black olive; a delightfully al-dente tagliatelle with mussels and gherkin and a rich and tangy pigeon, beetroot and

black pudding. Despite having tried three of the savoury dishes, I had plenty of space for pudding and the smooth and crunchy chocolate, mint and hazelnut was divine. The menu changes regularly depending on seasonal ingredients and the items that can be sourced from the restaurant’s local suppliers. Restaurant manager Archie Kyle, who came from Fishers, is also on hand to provide plenty of astute drinks recommendations from the extensive wine list – many of which are available by the glass. For foodies looking for a cool, relaxed eatery just a stone’s throw from the Shore, this is a must-visit. CC 0131 629 2525 | @BoroughLeith

Hawksmoor 23 West Register Street, City Centre EH2 2AA Despite its vast scale, Hawksmoor feels friendly and relaxed. We started with the comforting potted beef and bacon and handdived scallops, but the menu centres around steak, so when in Rome... The fillet was tender and cooked to perfection even if it did look lonely on the plate at £34. The rib-eye came in at an only slightly less spendy £28. Sides and a rich Stichelton hollandaise cost extra. Puds are awesome so don’t scrimp here – try the giant Ferrero Rocher (Ambassador’s reception) or the pineapple and coconut pavlova – a treat for piña colada fans. Y

ou’d be forgiven for being completely unaware that this unique building even exists. Located through a wee close right in the middle of the Royal Mile, you’ll find Riddle’s Court. It was in this medieval merchants tenement – built in 1598 – that King James VI twice dined on sumptuous banquets. In order to restore the building and highlight its unique historical value, the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust took out a 99 year lease on the whole building in 2011. The Category A-listed building’s historic rooms now offer various spaces for meetings, events and weddings.

However the real jewel in its crown is the flat and the King’s Chamber within it, duly named after its royal visitors. SHBT CEO Una Richards and her team were determined to create a space that celebrated its medieval royal roots while offering a comfortable place for guests. ‘The flat here had a 1970s alteration so the character of some rooms had gone so we’ve really tried to reinstate it. We knew the beamed ceiling was there in the King’s Chamber but it needed some conservation. Clockwise from top left: The King’s Chamber offers a foldaway bed to create more space; pops of colour combined with neutral tones help keep the space bright; the medieval fire grate; the living space has comfortable modern seating.

RIDDLE’S COURT

Medieval ceilings were done with fresco in paint on the timber and on the plasterwork there were little friezes in between each beam. We were able to copy that from the original examples that came out.’ While the team knew the ceiling in the

‘Riddle’s Court offers 400 years of history’ King’s Chamber was a prominent feature, they were surprised to find that decorated beams were not only confined to the bedroom. ‘The ceiling in the living room was a discovery. It’s been conserved but not restored and it actually shows a glimpse of what was there before,’ says Una.

The balance of old and new was a pivotal factor in the brief of the project according to Una. ‘Where it’s modern it’s modern and where it’s historic it’s historic. We’ve got ceilings that are genuine and authentic, we’ve got a modern bathroom. We’ve got a fireplace and reinstated a grate that would have been there when the banquet happened, but for present day we’ve put a gas fire in. The rest of the interior has been a mix of old and new fittings, like our dining table which is a feast table made in the 1830s. With the modern furniture, we’ve tried to pick it so it respects the character of the building.’ This is balanced with a modern kitchen that can be tucked away behind sliding wooden doors. Riddle’s Court offers 400 years of history in the centre of the capital. It’s a home away from home with a special twist and there’s nothing else quite like it in Edinburgh.

Clockwise from top left: A king’s view; artistic touches create a homely feel; the kitchen offers the chance to dine in; Una Richards on the external balcony.

MY CITY FASHION GARDEN

A city escape Before Tina Kelly and her husband John moved to Edinburgh over 14 years ago, the garden was never a priority. ‘We’d never really lived anywhere for more than four years. With this one, we had finished the work on the house and the garden frustrated us a bit, which is why we decided to get someone in to do it properly,’ says Tina. That’s when garden designer Carolyn Grohmann set about creating the space the couple had always dreamt of. ‘We said we really wanted the garden to be much softer in terms of rounded edges and our main criteria was having different areas in the garden to sit in. It’s a north-facing garden so it gets sun at various times. Down at the bottom of the garden we wanted an area where we could have lunch or a barbeque during the day and very importantly, we used to have a bench that we called the gin and tonic bench, so it was really important that we had a gin and tonic area,’ says Tina. Colour was another essential. ‘The garden was a bit pink and bland before. We like hot colours so that was oranges, reds and a wee bit of purple. It’s just nice to be out here,’ she says. Tina adds that the G&T bench has so far been put to good use! www.secretgardensdesign.co.uk

Bag of tricks In search of the perfect handbag, Sarah Haran decided to design it herself

I

WORDS BY M ORAG BOOTL AN D

first met Sarah Haran in Jenners where she introduced me to her range of leather handbags. I instantly loved the timeless designs and was overjoyed to find out the inception of these bags was such a fascinating story. Sarah’s career didn’t begin in fashion – in fact she started off in IT, but not in the ‘have you tried switching it off and on again?’ department. Sarah was the chief operating officer of a listed cloud computing company, which saw her travel regularly to meetings. With minimal luggage allowance, Sarah was struggling to find the perfect day-to-night bag she needed for these trips. Deciding that if nobody else could produce her dream handbag she would do it herself, she undertook training in handbag design and leather work which led to an apprenticeship with a former creative director of Mulberry. The Dahlia is Sarah’s signature design and this is a bag that is as practical as it is versatile. Handmade in Britain using Italian leather (like all of Sarah’s bags) it is essentially two bags in one. The main body of the bag houses six pockets, which Sarah believes is

46 |

046-047_sfe09.indd 46

the optimum number so that you can keep track of where everything is, but also have a place for everything you need. The Dahlia includes a front pocket which can be detached and used as a stand-alone bag called The Ivy. The Ivy is available to buy separately so that you can switch it up and add a splash of a different colour to your bag. Along with a range of coloured leather tassels that fit on the bag, this makes

‘The designs are classic and carry a lifetime guarantee’ the possibilities for different looks almost endless. And that’s important, because Sarah’s bags are not designed to be disposable or to go out of style. The designs are classic and her bags carry a lifetime guarantee. With a variety of tassels, pom poms, decorative strips and straps available, you can change your look without the need to change your bag. And that appeals greatly to anyone who doesn’t have time to swap bags to match every outfit. www.sarahharan.com

FASHION BEAUTY

Time to reset Lynsey Baird, manager of Edinburgh’s Yuu Beauty shares her top tips to ensure that you and your skin are ready for the change in seasons and continue to look your best as summer fades and autumn kicks in

1. Now that autumn is here, it’s important to take care of your skin. If you have ever thought about doing a peel or a resurfacer, this is a great time to do it. Our clients love our Power Pumpkin Resurfacer from Dermaquest and our TCA Peel. These treatments reduce bacteria, and rejuvenate sun damaged skin. The TCA Peel dramatically reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles – perfect for clients who want to off-set ageing skin from the first signs.

2. Laser hair removal is perfect in the cooler months so you can get started with this treatment and be hair-free in time for next summer. With the use of our Soprano Ice Machine you will have your bikini body ready for next year, and best of all, it’s painless. 3. Skincare is very important. Make sure you match your moisturiser to the weather and also use a serum to further hydrate your skin. I love Dermalogica’s new Biolumin-C Serum to give me glowing skin even in the depths of winter. 4. When the rain comes I hate having panda eyes from mascara. I love getting our LVL Lash Lift and Tint so I don’t have to wear mascara and get five extra minutes in bed. This treatment makes the most of your own lashes and lifts them at the root to make them extra-long and with a defined curl. 5. It’s also a good idea to get rid of thread veins at this time of year. We use a machine called VeinAway, which not only removes thread veins, but also milia and skin tags as well. It’s the perfect time to get this treatment as we are all covered up in the cold winter months. www.yuubeauty.co.uk Right: Dermalogica’s Biolumin-C Serum promises to keep skin glowing through the winter.

Morningside & Bruntsfield From boutiques to cafes and everything in between, make a day of it in Morningside and Bruntsfield

W

ith an eclectic collection of traditional shops and thriving boutiques, both Morningside and neighbouring Bruntsfield offer some of the finest independent shopping experiences in Edinburgh. Add to this an abundance of cafes and cultural hubs, and it’s hardly surprising that Bruntsfield and Morningside are two of the most sought-after residential areas in the city. A walk down Morningside Road provides a real contrast to the medieval Old Town or the classical Georgian New Town, although the history of the areas

‘A walk down Morningside Road provides a real contrast to the Old Town’ are just as easy to see. Dedicated grocers, butchers and cheesemongers remain, as do many businesses here which have truly lasted the test of time; James Erskine

Interiors, still housed in the original shop on Church Hill Place which first opened in 1919, continues to delight customers today, while the family-run, art deco Dominion Cinema on Newbattle Terrace, which dates from 1937, comfortably competes with large multiplexes due to the opulence of its interior and the owners’ focus on the pleasure of the cinema experience. Part of the appeal of shopping in Bruntsfield and Morningside is how seamlessly traditional businesses sit alongside contemporary boutiques, such as Sarah Hutchison’s eponymous SH Jewellery shop, brimming with beautiful, modern silver jewellery. furniture shop Nordic Living by Biehl, experienced electricians Morningside Electrical and independent ladies clothing company Vivaldi are well worth visiting, as is the cosy interior of The Edinburgh Bookshop. Specialist shops, too, are worth their salt; whether it’s Bruntsfield caffeine connoisseurs Artisan Roast and their ingenious coffee subscription service, or spa & beauty salon Zen Lifestyle – always ready to offer sage advice on the best health and beauty treatments for busy professionals One thing which both Bruntsfield and Morningside have in abundance is cafes and restaurants and, if you have a sweet tooth, you can’t fail to be tempted. S. Luca’s ice cream originated in Musselburgh but created a second home at Holy Corner more than 15 years ago, while Falko

Konditormeister – named after the highest state qualification a German pastry chef can hold – spoils for choice with divine cakes, tarts and gâteaux. Options are far from limited for more substantial fare: Nonna’s Kitchen remains a firm local favourite; The Bruntsfield Hotel buzzes with activity, and Chop House delivers steak just as you like it. The joy of exploring Bruntsfield and Morningside is not simply confined indoors; catch cricket practice on the Meadows, play a free round on Bruntsfield Links, the world’s oldest short hole golf course (not to be confused with the golfing society of the same name at Barnton), or even grab a sunny spot for a barbeque during the summer months. Now, did we mention there’s a great little wine shop around here...?

The Old Town Quirky shops, elegant hotels, lively bars, restaurants and even a market – this historic part of Edinburgh is full of surprises

H

arry Potter author J. K. Rowling is reputed to have based Diagon Alley on Victoria Street in Edinburgh, and it’s easy to see why. Right in the heart of the Old Town, this uphill crescent of rainbow-coloured shop fronts is the perfect starting point to begin exploring this magical area of Scotland’s capital.

‘You’ll want to return to this vibrant part of Edinburgh time and time again’ While Harry and his friends sought wands and owls, Victoria Street is home to Demijohn, the world’s first liquid deli, where liqueurs, wines, oils and vinegars can be decanted into quirky glass bottles that wouldn’t look out of place in a potions class. For glass-encased gifts of a different variety, the Isle of Skye Candle Company’s Edinburgh store is well worth a visit to experience the heady aromas of Scots pine, heather and wild berries. Stories are woven into the fabric of this part of Edinburgh, and nowhere more so than The Scottish Storytelling Centre, a vibrant arts venue with a seasonal programme of live storytelling, theatre,

music, exhibitions, workshops, family events and festivals. The Grassmarket, steeped in history as the notorious spot where executions once took place, was partially pedestrianised in 2008 and is home to a farmers’ market each Saturday – the perfect place to stock up on organic fruit and vegetables, artisan breads, smoked fish and other fresh, local produce. To get away from the hustle and bustle of the market stalls, head for Mr Wood’s Fossils to explore a wide range of fossils, minerals, meteorites and jewellery. In fact, whatever you’re looking for – from a chilled-out afternoon with the resident cats at Maison de Moggy, to traditional Scottish hospitality at the Radisson Collection Hotel; a sweet treat at Fudge Kitchen (Irn Bru tablet, anyone?) or retro Super Mario video games in

Wings underground bar - you can find it in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Perhaps the most famous street in the Old Town – if not in the whole of Edinburgh – is, of course, the Royal Mile. Souvenir shops aside, this bustling tourist destination is home to some retail treasures if you’re prepared to do a bit of digging. One such gem is Cadenheads, Scotland’s oldest independent whisky bottler. This whisky shop and tasting room on the Canongate is must-visit, whether you’re new to single malt or already a seasoned aficionado. You can also find some excellent dining options, including the Radisson Blu Edinburgh, where the finest seasonal Scottish ingredients are always on show. Edinburgh is a city of contrasts, where historic buildings blend seamlessly with modern architecture. The Old Town, where many buildings date back to the 16th century, is only a stone’s throw from the New Town, which, despite its deceiving name, is nearly 300 years old. This harmonious contrast is clear to see at The Arches, a row of 19 newly renovated

Victorian arcs on East Market Street which have been restored as part of the £150 million New Waverley development, transforming the area into a vibrant place to eat, drink and shop. Worth a special mention is the Chop House, the little sister of the original restaurant in Leith of the same name – arguably two of the finest steak houses in the city. Edinburgh is famously built on seven hills, but despite this the city centre is very walkable. Parking, as locals will allude to, is notoriously expensive and often tricky to find - except on Sundays, when off-street parking is free and finding a vacant space becomes even more of a challenge. Make use of the city’s excellent bus system, take the train into Edinburgh Waverley, or leave the car at Ingliston Park & Ride and hop on a tram to Princes Street. From here, walk over Waverley Bridge and up winding Cockburn Street to reach the heart of the Old Town. How long you choose to spend in this vibrant part of Edinburgh is up to you, but we guarantee that you’ll leave wanting to return time and time again.

hile the high street has undoubtedly taken a knock in recent years as online retailers’ profits continue to rise, Princes Street – Edinburgh’s main shopping destination – is still home to some big-chain favourites, contrasting with the altogether higher-end brands housed on parallel George Street. Designer delights do not begin and end here, however; Multrees Walk is the definition of luxury shopping in Edinburgh, home of Scotland’s only Louis Vuitton and Harvey Nichols stores. The latter is famous for spectacular views from its Forth Floor Restaurant as well as five floors of designer-label fashion. If you have time you could pop over to Zen Lifestyle on nearby Hanover Street. This multi-award winning salon offer over 100 treatments for busy men and women, ranging from relaxing spa treatments to advanced skincare and cosmetic treatments. Whether you are looking for a day spa, nail bar, brow bar or skin clinic, Zen has the right treatment for you. St Andrew Square is a hive of activity during Edinburgh’s numerous festivals and

No shopping trip would be complete without browsing a boutique or two, and Thistle Street offers quality independent shopping in abundance. Browse leading brands from all over Europe in Covet, and

enjoy a (literal) warm welcome at Jane Davidson, where you’ll be greeted with a real fire during winter and offered a tea or coffee on arrival. Although Rose Street is perhaps best known for its stretch of lively pubs, furniture store BoConcept has broken the mould, championing clean, innovative Danish designs for the home. Only a stone’s throw away, Jenners, Edinburgh’s flagship department store, has charmed shoppers of all ages and budgets for almost 180 years. Moving towards the opposite end of Princes Street, the West End is garnering a well-deserved reputation as a shopping destination in its own right. From bridal accessories and designer jewellery at Lily Luna, to beautiful bathrooms at The Bathroom Company’s West End showroom, there are so many wonderful shops within these cobbled streets to

discover. The website of Edinburgh’s West End BID Group is well worth browsing before a shopping trip to familiarise yourself with any hidden gems you may have missed. Socialising can be done just as stylishly as shopping in the West End, and everything about the Angels Share Hotel, Bar & Restaurant on Hope Street sparkles; from the copper bar to the chandeliers and cocktails. Whighams Wine Cellars next door hosts its very own jazz club and, although a little out of the way, Pizzeria 1926 offers a true taste of Naples and is well worth making the journey beyond Haymarket for. Whether you’re looking to shop till you drop in a string of highend stores, raise a glass in one of the many watering holes or escape the hubbub in the city’s greenery, the West End and city centre have something for everyone.

Newington & The Meadows Edinburgh at its most cosmopolitan

I

n a city of hills, any expanse of flat land is a rarity and the Meadows to the south of the city centre is no exception. Before it became known as the Meadows the area was originally a loch, known as ‘burgh loch’ and later ‘south loch’, which mirrored ‘nor loch’ to the north of Edinburgh castle where Princes St Gardens now lie. Compared with Nor Loch, which was used for waste disposal, South Loch was viewed to be rather more sanitary and therefore provided much of the city’s drinking water. The reliance on the loch diminished when springs further to the south of the city centre were tapped

‘Today the area is a haven for students and young professionals’ and pipes were laid to bring water into the Old Town. South Loch was drained in the mid-17th century and the land reclaimed. Throughout the 18th century the area was

landscaped and features dating from that time still remain to this day such as Middle Meadows walk, the tree lined avenue which spans the park from north-south. Today the area is a haven for students and young professionals. Bars and restaurants are everywhere, many serving international cuisine for a cosmopolitan crowd. Try Persian Street Food at Ransacked Black Oven on Marshall Street or spice things up at Ting Thai Caravan on Teviot Place. The development of the

Quartermile at the site of the old Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh has brought new vibrancy and energy to this already buzzing area. The existing hospital buildings were converted into new build flats and new buildings were added to accommodate more housing, retail units and leisure facilities for locals and visitors. Each summer the area is a hub of activity with the Meadows Festival, a free volunteerrun annual event featuring live music, merchandise, food, and information stalls, kids’ and adults’ activities. To the south of the Meadows you’ll find Marchmont and Newington. Newington is bounded by Dalkeith Rd and Causwayside, to the north, by East and West Preston Street and to the South by East and West Mayfield. Newington grew up as residents of the crowded Old Town looked to escape the overcrowding. Following the opening of South Bridge in 1788 the area developed, with many small villas being built. These can still be seen throughout

the area including Minto Street and Blacket Avenue. There are some beautiful civic spaces here too, such as The Queen’s Hall, a former chapel, now a 900 capacity venue for classical and jazz concerts as well as the occasional rock gig. Friendly pubs such as the Abbey Bar also give the area a distinctive personality. It’s no secret that Newington is home to Edinburgh’s student population with the University of Edinburgh’s Pollock Halls of Residence located here. Students have always been good at sniffing out a bargain and there is no better place to find one than at Armstrong’s Vintage, one of the UK’s oldest and most loved vintage clothing stores. This place will have you looking the part in no time. After your shop, grab a bite to eat in nearby Souq where you’ll find the flavours of Marrakesh at very reasonable prices. Afterwards why not go for a relaxing walk around Arthur’s Seat and Holyrood Park – this fantastic green space is only a few minutes’ away.

Broughton & Leith Walk These boho areas of Edinburgh are full of personality

T

he landscape of Leith Street, where Broughton meets Elm Row at the top of Leith Walk, is in the midst of a transformation. The old St James Centre, dating from the 1970s, has gone, and work is well underway on one of the biggest regeneration projects in the UK – a development of 1.7 million square feet, including extensive retail space, a luxury hotel, 30 restaurants, a multiscreen cinema and up to 150 new homes. Expected to open in 2020, the new Edinburgh St James will undoubtedly bring extra revenue to the city centre – but in the meantime, don’t skip Broughton Street or Leith Walk when planning a day out. Elm Row, at the top of Leith Walk, is a constant hive of activity – and, thankfully, just out of earshot of the ongoing construction works. At the heart of the area is the Edinburgh Playhouse, hosting a packed schedule of touring musicals, with plenty of lively bars and restaurants nearby, ideal for pre-theatre dinner and drinks. Leith Walk’s shops have a charm all of their own – and where better to begin than in Scotland’s oldest delicatessen and Italian wine merchant? Valvona & Crolla on Elm

Row was founded in 1934, and this familyowned business continues to delight today. Don’t miss the cafe here, either.

‘Work is underway on one of the biggest regeneration projects in the UK’ While you’re in the area, pop in to The Cat’s Miaou to shop an eclectic mix of fair trade, ethical and locally made gifts, and browse McNaughtan’s Bookshop & Gallery, the oldest secondhand and antiquarian book shop in Scotland. Music fans should check out Elvis Shakespeare and Vinyl Villains. If you’re looking for flavours of the Mediterranean, few areas in Edinburgh can

beat the quality and choice offered in Leith Walk’s cafes and eateries. Relax in Serrano & Manchego and savour Spanish tapas with lashings of wine, indulge in Italian cuisine at local favourites Vittoria and La Favorita, and, for something completely unique, take home a selection of sweet and savoury goodies from The Sicilian Pastry Shopon Albert Street. Truly one of Edinburgh’s most vibrant areas, Leith boasts its own distinct character. Continue your journey down Leith Walk and you’ll be rewarded with a hub of lively eating and drinking spots – from sumptuous cakes at Mimi’s Bakehouse to Michelin starred cuisine at The Kitchin and Restaurant Martin Wishart. For those interested in arts and antiques, Leith also boasts some fabulous places to grab a bargain. Why not try going to an auction at Ramsay Cornish antiques on Jane Street? Housed in a 18th century former bonded wine warehouse, their city centre

location provides a convenient location for clients both buying or selling. West of Leith Walk, Broughton Street is home to many independent speciality shops. Real Foods is a one-stop destination for speciality, organic, free-from, vegan and health foods in Edinburgh, while The Dragonfly stocks classic, retro, vintage and chic gifts for all occasions. Joey D, meanwhile, recycles vintage clothing and unusual materials in his in-store workshop; he might not save the world singlehandedly with his recycling scheme, but he will help you defeat the boredom of the high street. While the Edinburgh tram route currently stops at York Place, a final decision on whether to extend this network to Newhaven is expected soon. If approved, the new tram lines would run down Leith Walk and along to the Ocean Terminal shopping centre. It’s all change for Edinburgh’s east end – let’s enjoy the journey.

THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Scotland’s youngest Michelin-starred chef has worked in some of the world’s finest restaurants but Auld Reekie has always been home WORDS BY TOM KITC HIN

I moved to Barnton when I was little and have always loved Edinburgh. My wife and I spent many years in London and Europe and moved back to Edinburgh to open our restaurants in 2006. We always loved the city, especially the closeness to green areas, parks and the countryside. Edinburgh offers a bit of everything and our four boys are happy growing up here, where they are allowed to be children.

for seafood. They’re in an enviable location with beautiful views over the harbour, and the familyrun fishmonger has been around since the 1950s.

‘Edinburgh offers a bit of everything’ I love to go to the Botanic Gardens. It’s a real hidden gem in the city and a place to get away from the hustle and bustle. The kids love a run around and we enjoy a stroll in the different seasons.

My parents still live in the countryside in Kinross-shire and my sister and family recently moved to Edinburgh after many years in Perthshire. We’re a really close family and love spending time together.

Despite having lived in Edinburgh for 12 years it still manages to surprise me with its diversity and continually evolving food scene. It has a community feel but we’re so fortunate to have some of the best produce in the UK on our doorstep.

Welch Fishmongers in Newhaven Harbour is one of my favourite places
