WELCOME TO SF EDINBURGH

Editor’s letter

A

h, the summer! These days it invariably means jetting off to foreign climes for a week or two of R&R in the sun, but before the sun and sangria of Europe or the hellish heat of Florida and Disneyworld became the norm, the staycation was the annual way for Scottish city-dwellers to get away from it all. For generations of Edinburghers, their summer frolics often included trips to – or even weeks staying in – the seaside resort of Portobello. And while many Glaswegians would head ‘Doon the Watter’ to Cowal and the inner Hebridean islands of Bute, Cumbrae and Arran, so many came east to Porty that the opening of the Marine Gardens complex in 1909 attracted almost a million visitors, many from the West, in its fi rst summer.

Portobello became one of the most vibrant holiday destinations in Europe The many reasons for Portobello’s remarkable popularity are told by my colleague Kirsty Smyth in a hugely enjoyable and informative article on how this small strip of sand on Edinburgh’s north-eastern shores became one of the most vibrant holiday destinations in Europe. At one stage it boasted the largest swimming pool in Europe, a vast ballroom and a mud hut village inhabited by seventy Africans paid to engage in daily spear fights. Holidays, they just ain’t what they used to be...

SCOTTISH BALLET

Modern moves Tradition and tutus were first to go when it came to choreographer David Dawson’s vibrant new vision for a stripped-back Swan Lake W O RDS BY KI RS TY SMYTH

‘I

never thought I would make Swan Lake,’ admits David Dawson, one of the most sought after choreographers of modern ballet. ‘It’s not something you take on lightly.’ But when Scottish Ballet’s chief executive and former Royal Ballet School classmate Christopher Hampson asked him to do just that – then asked again, and again – he put aside any reservations and turned his mind to creating a version of the classic quite unlike anything anyone had ever seen

before. ‘It was obvious within the company’s repertoire that what was missing was a Swan Lake,’ Hampson explains. ‘I needed a choreographer that I knew would deliver something really new, but with a very strong classical vocabulary and that is David to a T. He said ‘no’ quite a few times before he agreed. He felt we needed to question why the world needed a new Swan Lake and it was important to have that dialogue.’ But Dawson needn’t have worried. Having danced Tchaikovsky’s pièce de résistance himself ‘probably more times than I really wanted to’, Hampson was as keen as anyone not to trot out the tried and tested traditional tutus and tiaras production of the 1870s. ‘There’s a lot of Swan Lakes around, and I think that our audience expects us to do something different,’ he explains. ‘We’re known for doing fresh things and thinking outside the box. I knew if we were going to do a Swan Lake it needed to be one created with the dancers of today in mind. They are

far more athletic than the dancers of yesteryear, and that includes my generation. We also needed to tailor it for a modern audience who expect new comment and a fresh look to things.’ Given free reign to cast off the traditional and re-imagine the piece, Dawson eventually embraced the project, creating a magical result based on gut instinct and 21st-century perspective. Formal costuming, ‘velvet and swag’, and elaborate set designs were the first to go – there wasn’t a tutu in sight when the show enjoyed its world premiere in Glasgow earlier this year. But while the protagonists have been stripped back in terms of attire, Dawson has worked hard to add layers to their characters, inviting an audience to better identify with the leads. ‘I’m trying to take it one step further by making the roles of Siegfried, Odette and Odile more complex, more real,’ he explains. ‘I really wanted Odette to be a strong female character. I didn’t want my Swan Queen to be under any spell, or under the power of a man. She has her own choices and decides her own fate.’ From the gentleness of Odette to the fiery temptress Odile, principal Sophie Martin beautifully encapsulates the yin and yang of the character, ably supported by male lead Christopher Harrison’s

stunning portrayal of Seigfried. ‘I really enjoyed working with David Dawson,’ Martin says. ‘His language is quite extreme and I enjoy it when things are very physical, I like to push myself.’ Which is just as well. ‘Chris and I had ten days with David before the rest of the company and it was quite intense,’ she admits. ‘He’s so quick at creating, we had to be really focused – it was a bit like a bootcamp. But the hard work has definitely been worth it and I’m so grateful to be involved, especially because it’s a new creation. It’s special to be a part of that.’ After wowing audiences in Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen and Newcastle, the company is bringing the production to Edinburgh, which Hampson describes as ‘our unofficial second home,’ on 25 May. ‘I’ve loved working with David on this,’ Hampson says. ‘He’s created something where the entire company’s firing on all cylinders. Everyone’s dancing for the entire two and a half hours, so it’s pretty impressive. ‘I often sense audiences in the first 20 minutes going, “Ohh, this is really very different”. But by the time we’re into the second act, they’re with us. We’ve been getting a huge, cheering response at the end and I really think people are responding to the fact that we’ve done something new. It’s completely stripped back – it’s wall to wall dancing, so the star of the show is the company.’ WWW.SFEDINBURGH.CO.UK

Big moments in Porty’s past

O

n days when the beach is crowded, and the B&Bs are full of guests who prefer to be by the sea and travel in to Edinburgh to see the sights, it’s possible to take a glimpse into Portobello’s past. The suburb reigned as Scotland’s premier seaside resort from the late 19th century. Holiday makers in their thousands turned up to enjoy the beach and fun fair, which sprang up thanks to a trio of showmen – Billy Codona, Harry Marvello and Andre Letta – who pioneered a new wave of entertainment. Born into travelling showpeople in 1862, Codona founded a touring player business. In 1901, he added Porty to his summer circuit. Four years later, he moved into 70 Tower Street and set up a

roundabout on the Harbour Green, the stretch of grass winding along the sea front from Pipe Street to Figgate burn, and from the Potteries to the shore. As a teenager Harry Marvello, born in 1879, was apprenticed to renowned conjurer Ludwig Dabler. By 1905, he had formed Geisha Entertainments and erected a tent pavilion at the Green. Later Marvello bought the Tower House SF EDINBURGH

Portobello became a haunt for smugglers and sailors in the 18th century. In 1742 a sailor named George Hamilton built a cottage near Brighton Place called Porto Bello, meaning beautiful port or harbour. Edinburgh architect and designer William Jameson built the harbour in 1787 to serve the local industries, particularly the pottery business. In 1833, Portobello town was made into a burgh. Later, in 1896, it was incorporated back into Edinburgh. Sir Thomas Bouch designed Portobello pier, which operated from 1871 until the start of World War One when the iron supports rusted away. The pier was demolished in 1917. The Portobello Power Station, located between King’s Road and Westbank Street, provided the city of Edinburgh with electricity for over half a century. It was closed in 1977 and demolished shortly after. Scotland’s first chocolate factory, Charles’ Chocolate Factory, was set up in Portobello by a German man, Charles William Schulze, in 1905. The factory came under suspicion during World War One as most of its staff were German and was taken over by the military in October 1914, remaining a billet for troops for the rest of the war.

by the sands and built a pavilion in the grounds, in which he set up Portobello’s first roller skating rink. Meanwhile, having performed at the Balmoral for King Edward, eminent magician Andre Letta set up a theatre at 14 Bath Street. The crowds flocked to the shows and while many locals embraced their town’s new-found popularity, others didn’t. At a meeting in the Town Hall on 8 October 1905, over 600 people supported the motion, proposed by the Rev Robert Whyte of the Regent Street United Free Church, that ‘this meeting views with deep regret the licensing by the City magistrates of the various open spaces at the Promenade and Harbour Green for undesirable and noisy amusements, whereby the whole character

of the sea front is lowered and rowdyism encouraged’. The motion had little effect and the shows continued to prosper. In 1907, Codona took over the whole Harbour Green site, renaming it

Clockwise from top left: Built in 1936, Portobello’s open-air pool was the largest outdoor pool in Europe; a poster advertising the pool; Portobello Community Garden was built on a semi-derelict site and features Coade stone pillars; the remaining fun fair arcades; the police station was originally built as the town hall.

In 1908, the Scottish National Exhibition was held in Saughton Park. Encouraged by its popularity – the exhibition attracted 3.5 million visitors – local entrepreneurs thought the pavilions erected should become a permanent feature and coastline west of King’s Road, Portobello (now occupied by the Marine Garage bus station) fitted the bill. With the Empress Ballroom the focal point, the complex was also home to a roller-skating rink, the Grand Cinema, and Bostock’s Circus and Zoo. Named The Marine Gardens, it opened in 1909, and attracted three quarters of a million visitors in the first year.

franchises in Marine Gardens and the seaside resort continued to grow. But Portobello was battered by the great storm of 26 November 1912. Fun City’s boundary wall was shattered and the devastation was a precursor for the changes that came with the outbreak of war, when Marine Gardens was taken over as a barracks for soldiers. After the war, holiday makers returned, and throughout the 20s and 30s children rode ponies and built sandcastles, while fishwives did a roaring trade in ready-to-eat mussels. The open-air pool, which opened in May 1936, became another prime attraction. Famous for its Art Deco design, towering diving boards and the first wave machine in Scotland, it was the largest outdoor pool in Europe. Happy times were again disrupted with the outbreak of World War II, but

Natives shipped over from Africa lived in mud huts and were paid to perform mock fights with spears Staggeringly, The Marine Gardens also featured a ‘Somali village’. Designed to provide exotic entertainment, it consisted of mud huts inhabited by 70 natives shipped over from Africa, who were paid to perform mock fights with spears. So popular was the resort in the first Glasgow Fair Week after the war that, with accommodation full, people slept on the beach and in shelters on the prom. However, by the late 1970s cheap package deals on holidays abroad meant fewer flocked to the seaside resort. The outdoor pool closed in 1979 following

Fun facts Sean Connery worked as a lifeguard at Portobello Pool before becoming a full-time actor in the 50s. Hidden inside Portobello Swim Centre is one of just three Turkish baths operating in Scotland. TV presenter Gail Porter and actor Ewen Bremner both grew up in Portobello and attended Portobello High School. Singer and comedian Sir Harry Lauder was born in Bridge Street on 4 August 1870. He would perform around the world via his railroad train, the Harry Lauder Special.

The shores of the Forth continued to prove a draw for pleasure seekers throughout the 1920s and 1930s the demise of the nearby power station, which had heated it, and much of the fun fair and arcade buildings have now been demolished. Yet Porty’s picturesque promenade and beach continue to attract people who enjoy views across the Forth and a feel for the history of the place; and there’s much more to Portobello than its coastal strip. With a host of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, the area has a real small-town community feel. Established businesses like award-winning butchers Findlay’s of Portobello thrive on the high street, while fresh, local produce is available from the monthly market including Portobello Apple, a not-for-profit juice made from local apples. Portobello also remains a creative hub. From the exciting Full Cirqle Circus School at Baileyfield, to the annual Edinburgh Big Beach Busk – when the Billy Codonas, Harry Melvilles and Andre Lettas of today use the prom to showcase their talents – the wheels of innovation still turn in a nod to the magicians, musicians and variety acts of yesteryear. PROFESSIONAL DOG WALKER ANDREA BEVERIDGE

A day in the life of... It’s far from a dog’s life for Four Seasons dog walker Andrea Beveridge, who’s found her dream job in the city WORDS BY A N DREA B EVERI DG E

I

have worked with dogs pretty much my whole life. If you were to ask my parents, they would tell you that I am one of those people who has always been obsessed with animals. I volunteered at the Scottish SPCA when I was 14 as a kennel maid and that’s where it all started. It was like something was hitting me in the back of the head saying ‘you’re supposed to be doing this!’ I do two hour-long walks a day, with a maximum of six dogs. It seems like a lot, but when you’ve worked with dogs for as long as I have, it’s no big deal. I set off at around 9.30 to pick them up in my Volvo which has been specially set up – the back seat has a hammock with doggy seatbelts. Edinburgh’s parks are so massive that there are infinite

If I see a path leading somewhere unknown, we’ll go and investigate walks you can do. I could easily spend two or three hours walking around the Hermitage or the Observatory. I really like going off the beaten track. If I see a wee path and it leads somewhere unknown, we’ll go and investigate. The dogs love going on adventures and we never do the same walk twice. In the afternoons, I have one home visit for an old rescue greyhound who needs his medication, then it’s time for my second walk with a different group of dogs. I don’t see myself changing career anytime soon, I am so happy doing this. I just love being with the dogs and seeing them every day. When you’re passionate about something, it’s the best thing. www.fourseasonsdogwalking-edinburgh.com

Seasons Restaurant & Bar 36 Broughton Street, New Town

‘Try this, you’ll love it’ said some foodie friends, and they were right. This tiny 24-seater Scottish-Scandi fusion restaurant is genuinely exciting and challenging, with Swedish chef Alex Duskas’ ever-changing taster menus ranging between 5-10 courses and featuring ingredients sourced from foragers and artisan suppliers. The huge portions are Scandinavian influenced and don’t miss the fantastic drink pairings. 0131 466 9851 | www.seasonstasting.co.uk

NEW RESTAURANTS

The Wee Restaurant 61 Frederick Street, New Town

Ten years ago former Crinan Hotel and Royal Scotsman chef Craig Wood left his job with Martin Wishart to strike out on his own. The result was The Wee Restaurant in North Queensferry, an affordable and hugely popular fine dining establishment in the shadow of the Forth Rail Bridge and yards from the railway station, allowing Edinburgh foodies easy access. Fast forward to this year and Wood and wife Vikki have spread their wings to Frederick Street on the site of what was creperie Fleur de Sel, which they’ve transformed with a stylish yet unpretentious contemporary interior. The food’s none too shabby either, as you’d expect from last year’s CIS Excellence Awards Chef of the Year. Building on the North Queensferry menu, Wood has brought those same qualities – and many of the same dishes – to the city. Although he’s hands-on in the kitchen in both restaurants, Wood has also imported his former Malmaison colleague Michael Innes – the former head of production at the three-star El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain – to be his head chef in Edinburgh. It’s a double act that seems to have worked. My huge bowl of white onion soup was a silky tour de force, while the other starter of goats cheese crottin in almond breadcrumbs with celeriac and walnut salad, and beetroot vinaigrette was a joy. From there we cantered through main courses of grilled seabass with spiced crab and spring onion risotto, plus roast rump of lamb with a risotto of petit pois, wild garlic and wild leeks. Yum on both counts. Pudding was pretty damned good too. Highly recommended. 0131 225 7983 | www.theweerestaurant.co.uk

The Compass 44 Queen Charlotte St, Leith

When Credo, which is one of my favourite local restaurants, closed unexpectedly, I was aghast. Actually it’s all worked out okay as the Compass Bar next door has knocked through and, if anything, improved one of the nicest spaces in Leith. The result is an easy-dining family-friendly restaurant that serves huge portions of unfeasibly rich comfort food. There’s also a much-expanded range of beers and sensibly-priced wines. 0131 554 1979 | www.thecompassleith.com

NEW RESTAURANTS

Wee Buddha 2B Jamaica St, New Town

In the New Town, on the side-street site of what was until recently the vegetarian-friendly Iglu, the Wee Buddha is a wonderfully relaxed little neighbourhood restaurant – actually, it’s more a quirky craft-beer and cocktail bar that serves tapas-style Asian fusion food – that by and large deserves the plaudits that have been coming its way. The atmosphere is certainly pretty chilled, although the staff are extremely enthusiastic and keen to help you navigate your way through a small

but mouth-watering menu that features many of the most popular Asian dishes, including the Wee Buddha’s signature dish, the fantastic six-spice crispy bean curd. We started with half a dozen ‘wee hings’, including the excellent salt and spicy squid, and the satay pork belly, before we feasted on a delicious version of king prawns singapore rice that was unlike any I’ve had before, and puzzled over the Malay curry. The perfect time to try this convivial little restaurant is in midweek, either with friends or when you simply can’t be bothered to cook. 0131 538 1215 no website but on Facebook

Belted Burgers 57a Frederick Street, New Town

The trend for gourmet burgers continues apace with the opening of this Dumfries & Galloway-owned basement restaurant in central Edinburgh. Made from whole Belted Galloway cattle, their ten choices of beef burger come in 6oz and 12oz sizes (costing £8-£14) and there are three choices of bun. There are chicken and vegetarian options, ‘hard shakes’, loads of Scottish beers and a cool ambience the yoof will especially love. 0131 260 9748 | www.beltedburgers.co.uk

SIX OF THE BEST

Sizzlin’steak houses Editor Richard Bath recommends six of Edinburgh’s best places to grab a fine bit of rump

Katie’s Diner This tiny but gloriously laidback and relatively inexpensive little neighbourhood steak restaurant on Bruntsfield Links has stood the test of time over 16 years thanks to the personal service offered by its owners Geoff (front of house) and Kate (kitchen) Ness. Their USP is a range of flavoured steaks – honey mustard, blackened, peppered, stilton and their marquee dish, the seven pepper lemon steak. There’s also BYOB (a small corkage charge applies) and a stunning vista.

12 Barclay Terrace, Bruntsfield | 0131 229 1394 | www.katiesdiner.com

Steak With an interior pulled together by a theatre set designer from the nearby Playhouse, this remarkable Tardis-like warehouse-sized restaurant opens out before you as you enter this grand Georgian terrace building. The non-steak offerings are particularly good, but the main thing you notice about the place is the sting in the tail – a bill which, thanks to a rib-eye at £40.50, can be eyewatering. The Donald Russell steaks are good though, and you will feel that you’ve had a real night out in this unique venue.

Champany Inn This is a cheat because it’s outside the city boundaries, but it’s only ten minutes from Edinburgh airport and this formerly Michelin-starred establishment remains arguably the best – if the most fearsomely expensive – steak house in Scotland. The high-falutin’ main restaurant is fantastic but very buttoned-up, and boasts a top-notch wine list. Sadly, you can’t reserve a table in the more relaxed and much cheaper Chop House in the old byre, but it’s worth going on spec.

STEAK HOUSES

Leith Chophouse The new boy on the block reminds me of the Butchershop Bar & Grill in Glasgow, which is very definitely a good thing. With its slick contemporary decor, its cosmopolitan ambience and backstreet location, the Chophouse has a distinctly urban feel. The first thing you see when you walk in through the doors is the cocktail bar, the second is custom-built glassfronted fridges in which their beef is aged. The steaks are good, but – as with so many steakhouses – not exactly cheap, with a 300g rump steak costing £18. One quirk: beware the underheated bottom-warming tiled banquette...

1–3 Rutland Street | 0131 229 3402 www.kyloerestaurant.com

Kyloe You’ll have to go a long way to beat The Rutland Hotel’s selfstyled gourmet steak restaurant. From the contemporary cowhide decor to the stunning views of Edinburgh Castle, this place has a lot going for it. Kyloe (old Scots for “Highland cattle”) has a large non-steak menu, but it’s at its best when Hardiesmill’s Aberdeen Angus cuts and those from the guest breeds hit the grill. The staff are excellent at explaining the different cuts, although it’s a matter of some personal regret that Kyloe no longer offers its platter of lesserknown cuts. With a 225g rump steak starting at £16,50, this is not a cheap option, but then you generally get what you pay for and Kyloe is worth every penny.

102 Constitution St, Leith | 0131 629 1919 | www.chophousesteak.co.uk

Wildfire The joker in the pack, you might think that this family-run restaurant is some sort of tourist trap but as well as catering for visitors to the city, this is also a place of pilgrimage for steak-savvy Edinburgh foodies, particularly when it gets warm and you can eat outside (the interior can be claustrophobically snug). The prices are more expensive than you’d maybe expect given the surroundings (a 10oz rib-eye is £23.50 and the house wines start at £20), but it has a unique style to it that is worth exploring. It also boasts a devoted band of local regulars, which speaks volumes. 192 Rose Street | 0131 225 3636 | www.wildfirerestaurant.co.uk

ICONIC BOOZER

Iconic boozer THE CANNY MAN’S, 237 Morningside Road Established in 1871 by the Kerr family and passed down through the generations, The Canny Man’s is something of an Edinburgh institution. Packed to the rafters with memorabilia, this characterful watering hole is known for its Bloody Marys (although the G&Ts can’t be faulted either) and has been described by renowned seafood chef Rick Stein as quite simply ‘the best pub in the world’. While many residents know of The Real Mary King’s Close, a warren of streets beneath Edinburgh’s Old Town, fewer are aware of the underground passageways and chambers of Gilmerton Cove on the southern fringe of the city. It is unknown exactly how old the mysterious space is – records go as far back as the 18th century, but the system appears to be very much older – or why it was hand-carved out of the sandstone. Was it a meeting place for persecuted religious groups? A witches coven? Illicit whisky still? The list of theories is long, but we do know that the caves were occupied by George Paterson, a local blacksmith, from 1724 until 1735.

uying a period property in Edinburgh after years of renting gave Magi and Dean Mitchell the opportunity to create a home that perfectly suits them. ‘We were in the Netherlands for seven years,’ Magi says, before renting in East Lothian for three. The couple bought their four-bedroom townhouse in the Grange area in 2014. ‘We put in a new central heating system and kitchen, as well as replacing the bathroom, a shower room and a cloakroom.’ The couple took advice from eldest daughter Lara, a designer with Napier Bathrooms & Interiors. ‘It was very much a collaboration,’ Magi says. The bathroom refit was challenging because of the room’s narrow shape. Magi wanted a roll top bath, but Lara’s find of a contemporary freestanding bath was the solution. Teamed with an LED light strip behind the cornice to create a feeling of natural light, a quartz tile wall behind the bath is particularly effective. Downstairs, the open-plan kitchen/ family space is equally impressive. ‘This is the room that we live in,’ Magi says. Bi-fold glass doors flood the space with light, while the decor features a mix of Farrow and Ball’s Lamp Room Grey on Shaker-style painted units and Slipper Satin on the walls, contrasting with Fired Earth’s Antimony on the island. The dining table was brought back from the Netherlands, while Magi found the vintage factory lights on eBay. ‘We had been in rented accommodation for quite a long time, so this was a nice opportunity to get what I wanted.’

KITCHEN BEFORE

Clockwise from above: Kitchen units have been replaced and painted; the kitchen now has a Shaker-style feel; the drawing room with its striking cornice; the narrow bathroom underwent a glamorous refit; glass doors flood the downstairs open-plan living area with light; although the living space has not undergone structural change, its look has been streamlined.

MY CITY GARDEN

My city garden Not too long ago this Inverleith garden consisted of poor-quality grass with a straight path to the gate. But when owner Kent Milne asked garden designer Dugal Macleod of Stone Wood Water Light, to get the most out of it, the compact space was transformed. The aim was to create the illusion of more space with year-round interest. After landscaping, a variety of plants and the summerhouse were incorporated. The result is easy to maintain, with slate walkways adding interest to the plants, grasses, herbs and roses, as well as two types of apple tree. Climbers add colour, while some plants were chosen for structure or scent. Kent is looking forward to making the most of his outdoor space over the summer months, ‘It is a very pleasant garden to sit in and entertain friends,’ he says. ention silk scarves and images of an elegant Grace Kelly looking effortlessly glamorous spring to my mind. ‘I love that idea,’ says luxury accessories designer Karen Mabon. ‘Because silk is such a decadent material, with a silk scarf you can be wearing an old jumper and ripped jeans, but if you throw a scarf on, you instantly feel a bit more pulled together,’ she says. Starting her own label three years ago, Karen’s designs have proved popular at home and overseas, with luxury department stores Bloomingdales in the States and Harvey Nichols Hong Kong now stocking her stylish scarves. Originally from the Black Isle, Karen studied jewellery design at Edinburgh College of Art and goldsmithing at the Royal College in London. ‘With print you can do more,’ she says. ‘Some of my work is screenprint, but a lot of it is digital, and that’s quick and fun.’ Inspiration for her bold and beautiful designs comes from all over. ‘Films, art and contemporary design. I love Andy Warhol and pop art – I dream about living in New York in the Sixties,’ she laughs.

‘Everything is made in Italy,’ Karen explains. ‘When I go, the factory owner talks through the fabrics, and it’s nice to be able to touch things and think what it’s going to feel like when you’re wearing it. ‘I love brands like Prada, Miu Miu and Moschino, where they can be a bit more playful because they are so beautifully made. There is fun attached to it.’ An element of fun also runs through the talented Scottish designer’s work, with

If you throw a scarf on, you instantly feel a bit more pulled together bold poodle patterns forming part of her I Wished It Would Never End collection. Up next is a brand new range of silk pyjamas – ‘I’m really excited, we’ve just got the samples through’ – as well as a collection of printed bags with iconic brand Radley due out this autumn. ‘You can splurge on an accessory and wear it all the time,’ Karen says, ‘whereas with an expensive top, you can’t wear that every day.’ www.karenmabon.com

ACTIVITIES TO TRY

Woman make fire A day in Dalkeith Country Park may not be the ultimate survival experience, but my time in the woods with Primal Bushcraft and Survival ensured that I have the skills to cope in a survival situation. From learning the many methods that can be employed to start a fire and the incredible boost to morale that a blaze can provide, to cooking meat underground using stones heated on that fire, there was lots of hands-on experience. Our small group of adults and children learned about building shelter, knife skills and the survival mindset from ex-military man Matt and outdoor instructor Paul. PROPERTY NEWS

Home report Selling prices of city homes have dropped, but some areas of Edinburgh and certain property types are bucking the trend

10.9% Average selling prices have seen notable decreases during the first months of 2016 due to LBTT tax changes, with property prices for the City of Edinburgh as a whole having decreased by 10.9% to £221,622, compared to the same period in 2015.

£316,000 The New Town and West End of the city continue to be the most expensive areas, with a £316,000 average selling price in the first months of 2016.

Areas that have a high number of one and two bedroom flats for sale, which attract the buy-to-let and first time buyer market, are bucking the trend. One bedroom flats in the Leith Walk area and two bedroom flats in the Newington area have increased in value by 16.3% compared to 2015. SF EDINBURGH

059_sfe04.indd 59

25% The average selling price for properties in the Blackhall/Davidson Mains/Silverknowes areas has dropped by almost a quarter, from £304,840 in the first quarter of 2015 to £230,775 in the first quarter of 2016.

SIGHTHILL GORGIE Two bedroom flats in Sighthill and one bedroom flats in Gorgie are currently the most affordable properties in the city.

THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Acclaimed contemporary artist Jamie Primrose has produced a number of sell-out London exhibitions from his Stockbridge studio WORDS BY JA MIE P RI MRO S E

I grew up in Trinity and vividly remember chasing squirrels and feeding the ducks in the Botanic Gardens as a toddler. Now I go there at least twice a week. I love the changing colours throughout the seasons. As a youngster I enjoyed drawing and painting and I was always encouraged to have fun and experiment with different mediums by my parents, and later at The Edinburgh Academy. I left Edinburgh in 1990 to study Fine Art at Newcastle University. After my studies my (now) wife Mari and I travelled the world, before living in Australia and then working in London. I returned to Edinburgh in 2003 which was the best decision. The city continues to motivate me.

098_sfe04.indd 98

I’m inspired by the city’s unique light as it changes constantly throughout the day My main inspiration comes from the unique light as it changes constantly throughout the day and the seasons. My favourite vista is from the top of the Botanics looking back on the city. Nothing beats bubbling in the outside pool at One Spa in Conference Square with the changeable Edinburgh weather drawing in overhead and the buzz of the city below I love Castle Terrace restaurant for fine dining. It’s a special experience – Dominic Jack creates the most delicious food in a wonderful atmosphere, with the dramatic castle looming above. Spring is my favourite time of year here. Every day I walk to and from my home in Marchmont to my Stockbridge studio through The Meadows. It’s magical in May, when the soft pink Spring cherry blossom burst into life there.
