dinburgh in high summer – where on earth do you start? If you’ve even a shred of curiosity or culture in your bones, whether it’s classical high art or the more low-rent populist stuff most of us secretly like, then there is nowhere better to live, breathe and play over the next couple of months. Putting together our What’s On? guide is rarely difficult because there’s so much happening in the capital, but over the next few weeks there are ten events vying for every spot in our guide to making the most of your city. There are the usual big set-piece suspects, of course – the International Festival, Book Festival, Fringe, Tattoo, Television Festival and Mela – and these

Less well-known diversions include the Water of Leith Rubber Duck Race extravaganzas are responsible for bringing countless thousands of visitors into Edinburgh over the summer. But there are also a whole host of other less well-known diversions, ranging from the increasingly popular Edinburgh Riding of the Marches to the Great Water of Leith (rubber) Duck Race, one of the most familyfriendly (and free) events of the summer. So go and participate, then let us know how you got on. The team here will be out and about all summer and it would be great to compare notes on a city which just gets better and better.

very Leith local will be well accustomed to the sight of a brightly painted shop front or a colourful mural on Leith Walk. Visual arts organisation LeithLate are responsible for the majority of street murals, painted shop shutters and outdoor exhibitions that are changing people’s perceptions of street art in the area. Not so long ago Leith held a reputation for illegal graffiti, vandalism and antisocial behaviour. In 2011 the local community teamed up with City of Edinburgh Council and Police Scotland to tidy up Leith Walk, removing the ‘eyesore’ of vandalism and graffiti. Now, replacing these, and in a bid to prevent further vandalism, LeithLate have paired up contemporary artists and local business owners to create unique

and vibrant artwork on their corrugated shutters to be displayed outside of business hours when their shutters are down, and collaborative murals in disused spaces. Morvern Cunningham, director of LeithLate, says the reaction has been wholly welcoming. ‘It is an all round beneficial collaboration. We fund the artists and they can add the work to their portfolio, while local business owners benefit by owning these beautifully colourful and bespoke shutters which attract visitors and deter vandals.’ says Morvern. Following the success of The Shutter Project in 2012, LeithLate launched The Mural Project in 2013. In collaboration with artists’ collective Blameless, The

‘Everyone has said it is a vast improvement on what was there prior to the Blameless murals’ Leith Aquatic was installed on Halmyre Street. Blameless, which includes local artists Fraser Gray, Skint Richie and Rabiya Choudhry, spent time with longtime local residents developing ideas and content for the mural. In an area with a historical problem of graffiti tagging, Blameless were keen that the community be involved and with the support of the local council, Leith Neighbourhood Partnership, Port of Leith Housing Association and Scotmid, The Leith Aquatic mural really is a community project. ‘Everyone has said it is a vast

‘It feels like a magic trick - throw these panels on top and it looks ten times better’ improvement on what was there prior to the Blameless mural, it has really adopted the identity of the area,’ says Morvern. ‘A local on Halmyre Street told me he always sees people taking pictures of the mural and wandering down his otherwise unremarkable residential street – people go there solely to look at the artwork.’ A year later, LeithLate organised a similar project in nearby Abbeyhill with artists Fraser Gray and FiST. Once again, after visiting a local retirement home and consulting with local residents, Gray and FiST, via Viewpoint Housing and anti-graffiti initiative A1derful Abbeyhill, used the memories of elderly residents to create the mural under Abbeyhill railway bridge. In contrast to the community aspect, Kirsty Whiten’s mural, installed last year, referenced the local artist’s exhibition Wronger Rites: The Quing of the Now 12 |

Peoples. Crazed, costumed ritualistic figures and sporting animal heads dance in unison in a dreamlike mural along a bare brick wall on Dalmeny Street. Elsewhere in the city graffiti is slowly transforming from eyesore to artwork. The controversial legal graffiti walls on New Street have undergone a makeover. City of Edinburgh Council enlisted the help of local large-scale mural artist Chris Rutterford to tidy up the ‘urban sketchbook’. With the help of local school children, street artists and nearby residents, Rutterford has produced a series of 8ft x 2ft painted panels, totalling 180 metres, to frame the existing art walls. ‘It feels like a magic trick – throw these panels on top and it looks ten times better,’ he says. T

he quiet farming village of Corstorphine was not a part of the City of Edinburgh until 1923. There is much debate about the name’s origin: some argue it derives from the Gaelic ‘corie stoir fionn’, meaning a white hollow in a wet place. Others are convinced it refers to a raised area of ground between two lochs where local baron Torfinn would cross in the tenth century. Both of these lochs appear on 18th century maps, but they were completely drained by the beginning of the 19th century resulting in the fertile alluvial soils on which Corstorphine’s more recent agricultural history was based. The principal family in the area were the Forresters. Their name is still firmly rooted in the town today in several street names, a school and a rugby club. In 1360 the Lordship of Corstorphine was given to Adam Forrester, a successful burgess of Edinburgh, by King Robert II. Adam, Lord Forrester quickly set about building himself a stronghold, Corstorphine Castle, and a chapel, today the collegiate church dedicated to St John the Baptist in the Old Parish Church. Visitors can still see Forrester heraldic shields above the doorway

Corstorphine Facts Above the east window of the Old Parish Church there is a niche containing a small lamp. In medieval times this was kept lit to guide travellers along the edge of the loch and through the marshes, a tradition the church have kept going to this day. The site of the village was dictated by local topography, with the village on raised ground between Corstorphine and Gogar Lochs, now both drained. The sycamore tree beneath which Lady Christian Nimmo murdered her lover blew down in a storm in 1998. Poet and suffragette Helen Cruickshank lived in Corstorphine for over fifty years and hosted many famous literary figures here. Corstorphine is mentioned in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novels, most notably Kidnapped. There is a statue (below) on Corstorphine Road by Alexander Stoddart of Stevenson’s famous Jacobite protagonists Davie Balfour and Alan Breck.

and their stone effigies inside. The castle no longer exists but is thought to have spanned over 100ft², with 40ft watchtowers at each corner and a waterfilled moat. Much of the old village is built using the stone from the castle, as was the Dower House which now houses the Corstorphine Trust. Scandal came to the Forrester family in the mid-17th century when James, the Lord Forrester of the day, was murdered. Considered a man of loose morals and bad manners, death came early to this laird when he seduced and married his young niece Lady Christian Nimmo. After a lovers’ tiff beneath a large sycamore tree by the castle doocot, Lady Christian is said to have drawn the sword of her drunk lover and skewered him in the moonlight. The crime was discovered and she was executed at Mercat Cross in Edinburgh in 1679. Legend has it that the Corstorphine white lady, Lady Christian, can be seen haunting the scene of her crime where she paces in hysteria, dressed only in white, still holding the bloodied sword.

Legend has it that the Corstorphine white lady haunts the scene of her crime, dressed in white At the beginning of the 17th century the Forresters fell on hard times and sold their lands to Sir James Dick of Prestonfield House, in Duddingston. The castle quickly fell into disrepair, and then ruin. Today only the fine 17th century doocot exists as a reminder. 20 |

CORSTORPHINE Clockwise from top: The Dower House is home to the heritage trust; the hill tower commemorates Sir Walter Scott; much of the village is built of stone from the castle; Corstorphine in 1890; bustling streets.

The village enjoyed brief popularity in the middle of the 18th Century when a stagecoach ran daily from Edinburgh city centre to Corstorphine’s physic well, which was well known for its medicinal qualities. This was to be relatively short lived as the well’s healing properties had mysteriously vanished by 1800. When construction on the Union Canal, which runs from Falkirk to Edinburgh, began in 1818, Corstorphine became home to a sudden influx of migrant labourers. The corner of High Street and Saughton Road is still known locally as ‘Irish corner’, where the Irish immigrants lived in purposebuilt housing. Many stayed on to work on the Glasgow to Edinburgh railway in 1842 and to work as labourers on surrounding farms. Their pantiled housing was demolished in 1929. A main supplier of milk, potatoes and rhubarb to the city, Corstorphine remained a farming village up until the early 1900s when the development of public transport, most significantly a train station in 1902, bus service in 1906 and tramway in 1923, made Corstorphine a

desirable commuter town. By the end of 1923 Corstorphine was incorporated into the administrative boundary of the City of Edinburgh and became an official suburb. At 531ft, Corstorphine Hill is one of the Seven Hills of Edinburgh. Now mostly hidden by woodland, but accessible from Clermiston Road, is the Corstorphine Hill Tower, a memorial to Sir Walter Scott. Erected in 1871, spectacular views can be obtained from the crenelated parapets of the red sandstone tower in the summer months. South of Corstorphine Hill is home to some of the area’s most widely celebrated and well visited residents, Tian Tian and Yang Guang, the giant pandas which arrived from China with great fanfare in 2011. With over 800,000 visitors a year, RZSS’s Edinburgh Zoo is Corstorphine’s largest and most popular tourist destination. Set in 82 acres of parkland, the zoo was opened in 1913 and houses more than 1,000 rare and endangered animals. It is still the only zoo in the United Kingdom with a Royal Charter and remains at the forefront of animal behaviour and conservation research. Henry Stevenson Henry Stevenson was a multitalented sportsman who lived in Corstorphine for over 35 years until his death in 1945. Stevenson was educated at Edinburgh Academy and became a first-class international cricketer and Scottish rugby union fullback. In rugby, Stevenson gained 15 caps for Scotland and took part in six Home Nations campaigns. He played for the 1891 Triple Crownwinning side. On the cricket field he was a slow underarm bowler and right-handed batsman, and appeared in five firstclass matches between 1901 and 1905. He played for Marylebone Cricket Club, HDG Leveson-Gower’s XI and PF Warner’s XI. His biggest wicket was that of Australian Test batsman Reggie Duff, whom he dismissed in one of his matches for the MCC.

King Harald V of Norway knighted one lucky penguin ‘Sir Nils Olav’, Colonel-in-Chief of the royal guard king penguins by Christian Salvesen when his whaling ships docked in Leith. The penguin colony (or ‘waddle’) grew in numbers, until one day in 1950 one penguin escaped from its pool and walked among the public. Visitors were so delighted that the zoo made this event a daily feature, giving birth to the ‘penguin parade’ for which Edinburgh Zoo is now famous. In 2008 King Harald V of Norway knighted one lucky penguin Sir Nils Olav, Colonel-in-Chief in the Norwegian Royal Guard. Sir Nils’ duties have included inspecting the troops of the Royal Guard and modelling for his very own bronze sculpture which was gifted to the zoo by Norway on the day of his knighthood. Another well known resident, who is at least as famous as Sir Nils and the giant pandas, is the eleven-times world champion and seven-times Olympic medallist Sir Chris Hoy. After winning three gold medals for cycling in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Hoy became the most successful cyclist of all time, but before fame, he pedaled at high speeds in the streets around his home in Corstorphine. EDINBURGH DUNGEON ACTRESS KERRY BRUCE

A day in the life of... Actress Kerry Bruce has recently added the role of Mary, Queen of Scots to her repertoire at The Edinburgh Dungeon WORDS BY K ERRY B RUC E PHOTOGRA PHED BY AMAN DA RI C H ARDS O N

I

have worked at The Edinburgh Dungeon for one year. We have just launched a new show called Wicked Women and I play Mary, Queen of Scots. She is such a strongwilled and fiesty character, it is great fun to play her. The setting is that she is about to be executed for treason against Queen Elizabeth I and is pleading for her life. She then accepts her fate and begins to plot her revenge – so I get to play a wide array of emotions. I think, although her story does have some sad parts, she was playing the game. She had a legitimate claim to the throne and ultimately she wanted the power. For any new characters we are provided with a script and during rehearsals we will explore the historical context and facts. Each morning we get a rota of the characters we are to

She is such a strong willed and fiesty character, it is great fun to play her play that day, then we do vocal and physical warm-ups and plan our costumes and make-up. All the actors at the dungeons play all the characters, so aside from Mary, I also play a judge, a torturer, a cannibal, a foul clenger [plague cleaner] and a ghost. As an actress you have to give 100% and, because we move around so much and play so many different characters, by the end of the day it’s nice to wipe your make up off and just be yourself. That’s not to say that when I need to be a little more assertive in life the character Judge Mental doesn’t come in handy to help me make my point! www.thedungeons.com/edinburgh

RESTAURANT REVIEWS

Norn 50-54 Henderson St, Leith EH6 6DE It’s very rare that you encounter something genuinely new and compellingly interesting in the world of Scottish cuisine, but in Norn we have a brave newcomer worthy of serious consideration. Sited on the ashes of the Plumed Horse after the former Michelin-starred establishment was sent to the knacker’s yard, this 32-cover restaurant is the brainchild of chef Scott Smith (right), the startlingly youthful former protege of Peat Inn patron Geoffrey Smeddle. Smith heads up an energetic young squad which includes organic wine sommelier Sandro Colavolpe. The USP of Norn – named after a dead Scottish language – is hard-core foraging, with a third of the staff spending each morning uncovering often obscure delights. The results of the foraging are then combined with the freshest meat available to produce seven small, almost tapas-like, dishes: you can choose four for £40 or seven for £65 (with matching wines for £35/60). If you’re looking for a gastronomic reference point, then imagine a more earthy version of Newington’s much-vaunted Aizle. We tried all seven dishes and were astonished at their variety and complexity, and impressed with the kitchen’s light touch. Our first dish of gently cured mackerel combined with creme fraiche, cicely, radish and lemon was clean and fresh, while our last hurrah, a gloriously sweet and sour pudding of woodruff ice cream, rhubarb and popcorn, was the pick of the bunch. In between ingredients from tomatoes stuffed with caviar and cream cheese, to lovage, sweetbreads and elderflower, toyed with the palate and excited the senses. There are downsides – the room echoes horribly, it’s expensive, and big eaters may need a fish supper on the way home – but there is something deeply refreshing about a crew of bright young things nailing their culinary colours so firmly to their mast. Highly recommended. RB 0131 629 2525 | www.nornrestaurant.com

Sasso 100 Lindsay Road, Newhaven EH6 4TZ This Italian stallion opened in February following an impressive refurb which has made it almost unrecognisable as what was once The Peacock Inn. Jointly owned by Ernesto Crolla and Remo and Gianni Margiotta, well kent names in the Edinburgh food scene, the place was bustling with families and couples. Standout dishes were the crispy calamari, sumptuous shin of beef and the freshest lemon sole, with slightly al dente wild mushrooms. Soggy bottomed lemon tart was the only real disappointment of the night. MB 0131 552 2111 | www.sassoedinburgh.com 28 |

Field Grill House 1 Raeburn Place, Stockbridge EH4 1HU It’s seldom that I have a meal that I would describe as flawless, but that’s what just happened here. The menu is full of Scottish temptation and we chose from the a la carte and great value lunch menu. It’s tricky to choose standout dishes from the scallops, grilled asparagus, loin of lamb and fabulous caesar salad (thankfully a salad in the very loosest sense of the word), so I won’t. However, I will say that the desserts should all be made into bitesized versions of themselves to avoid what was an almost impossible selection. Just yum. Badger & Co 32 Castle Street, EH2 3HT Occupying the house where The Wind in the Willows was written, the restaurant’s interior draws inspiration from the book while exuding a members’ club feel. The menu of mostly local produce had a few surprises, such as duck heart skewers, and the starters were a mixed bag – the bacon-wrapped scallops were delicious, but the haddie pie was unremarkable. The Aberdeen Angus bavette and roast rack of Borders lamb were both tasty, but the triple-cooked beef dripping chips stole the show, making up for the slab of stodgy parmesan polenta. NEW RESTAURANTS

Rollo 14 Broughton Street, EH1 3RH

When Rollo launched in Stockbridge back in December 2013, this bijou little place immediately attained cult status amongst the local grown-ups and has generally been full ever since. With its enticingly dark decor, on-trend mix of fresh fusion food served in varying sizes and a sharing format, plus an exceptional wine list and super-friendly and efficient service, there is much to like about the place. And, of course, there’s the constant presence of the memorably ebullient front-of-house Ailsa Rollo (left), the fashion designer daughter of architect George and sculptor Alison. As soon as you walk through the door, Ailsa’s war cry (‘Hello Dahlings!’) welcomes you. It’s a heady mix that has assured Rollo’s success, and is behind the launch of a second branch, this time on Broughton Street. Except for the place being twice as big, the winning formula has once again been faithfully replicated. Dark colours? Check. Ailsa at front of house? Check. Great wine? Check? Constantly full? Check. The menu is also identical to that in Stockbridge, which has lured many regulars. This is food to chat to, so we started with tortilla toastie shards with a white bean, garlic and paprika dip, plus blue cheese and caulifower paté with courgette fritters and sourdough toast – it may sound like militant veggie nonsense, but it was a gorgeously novel mix of complimentary flavours. The simple chunks of beef fillet with rocket and parmesan, and pan-seared tuna fillets with mango salsa were equally memorable, as were puddings of salted caramel chocolate tart and banana-themed bread and butter pudding. Another runaway success looms, Dahlings... RB 0131 556 5333 | www.facebook.com/barrolloedinburgh

The Rabbit Hole 11 Roseneath Street, Marchmont EH9 1JH

I’d expected this small bistro in the heart of Marchmont to be quiet on a school night but I was wrong; every table was taken. It’s no surprise – our starters of lobster beignets and crab cakes were light and well seasoned, and the Steak Diane to follow was a retro treat cooked to perfection. To finish up, the lemon polenta cake with Chantilly cream and raspberry compote was wonderfully light, while the blueberry panna cotta was smooth and rich. We had two embarrassingly, almost licked-clean plates when our waiter returned. MS 0131 229 7953 | www.therabbitholerestaurant.com SF EDINBURGH

SIX OF THE BEST

Pub grub Editor Richard Bath steers clear of style bars and cocktail emporiums to recommend half a dozen of Edinburgh’s best traditional pubs which serve food

King’s Wark, Leith Situated on the waterfront in one of Leith’s oldest buildings, which dates back to 1438, the King’s Wark has won the title of Scotland’s best gastropub several times. Encased in dark wood, with low ceilings, it’s cosy and couthie, while the portions are huge and the beer is great. A menu that is very big on comfort food includes some fantastic fish dishes, but the roasts on Sundays are legendary. It’s very popular but since it recently changed hands you can now book a table.

36 Shore, Leith | 0131 554 9260 | no website

Bridge Inn, Ratho Once the home of microwaved monstrosities, the AA’s Pub of the Year in 2014 is now one of the city’s few really decent country pubs. Nestling by the Union Canal, this old inn has its own herd of saddleback pigs and serves game for much of the year. The menu mixes pub classics (it has arguably the best fish’n chips in the city) with more high-falutin’ options, like venison loin. The Bridge Inn is characterful and has lovely views over the canal. It also has a hefty gluten-free menu and a surprisingly good wine list.

The Sheep Heid, Duddingston Dating to 1360 and famously Edinburgh’s oldest inn, this atmospheric Duddingston institution used to be frequented by Mary, Queen of Scots and was recently visited by The Queen when visiting Edinburgh. A country pub in the city, the whole place recently had a thorough overhaul and is now a popular dining destination, especially on Sunday lunchtimes. The menu is solid but unspectacular, while the quality of cooking can vary, but there’s always the old skittle alley.

PUB GRUB

Old Chain Pier, Newhaven One of my favourite venues, this quirky, tiny seafront pub was renovated a couple of years ago and has superb views out over the Firth of Forth – at high tide you are literally sitting over the water. The whole place has a wonderful ambience and as well as a small informal restaurant you can eat anywhere in the bar. The best dishes are fishy ones – the whole kilo of steamed mussels is popular, but I also like the hake fillet with mussels and prawns, and the massive fishcakes. Again, the staff are really helpful and efficient, and every second Monday night there’s live folk music.

Lothianbridge | 0131 663 2456 www.thesuninnedinburgh.co.uk

Sun Inn, Dalkeith One tip: unless you’ve got children or love other people’s nippers, it’s best to give this place a wide berth on Sunday lunchtimes. Otherwise it’s a joy to visit this surprisingly creative and interesting former coaching inn to the south east of the city on the banks of the Esk, and well worth taking a drive out of the city. There’s a menu of pub grub classics but also a more sophisticated version that is strong on provenance and contains endless attempts to engage diners (Newhaven crispy monkfish cheeks with paprika aioli, charred sweetcorn, sweetcorn beignet, anyone?). The service is incredibly efficient and relentlessly cheery, and the specials menus are great value.

32 Trinity Crescent | 0131 552 4960 | www.oldchainpier.com

Caley Sample Rooms, Shandon Nestled between Tynecastle and the villas of Merchiston, the cavernous Caley Sample Rooms were primarily a hangout of beer-lovers. These days a dizzyingly wide range of guest beers it still served, but the food is the reason many people travel here. As with most gastropubs, there are a smattering of the usual classics, which are generally well executed, but it’s the unusual specials which set the place apart – on my last visit I ate Crombie’s ‘Piggy Black’ sausages with black pudding mash and sauerkraut, and a sun-blushed tomato and polenta stack. There are also evenings where food is paired with beers. 42–58 Angle Park Terr | 0131 337 7204 | www.thecaleysampleroom.co.uk

ICONIC BOOZER

Iconic boozer NOBLES CAFÉ, BAR & RESTAURANT, 44a Constitution Street, Leith Established as a public house as far back as 1897, Nobles has a long tradition of being part of the fabric of the Port of Leith. Under new ownership since 2010, contemporary art now sits alongside the stained glass windows and original Victorian features of this characterful bar, while a friendly, relaxed ethos is a draw for visitors and locals alike. As well as dishing up everything from brunch to dinner, there is a wide range of local brews on tap too. www.noblesbarleith.co.uk

I

t is safe to say that Scottish architect Kieran Gaffney and his wife Makiko Konishi, a designer, are not afraid of a challenge. The couple, who set up

Konishi Gaffney Architects in 2008, bought a plot of land at the end of a garden in Edinburgh’s Portobello at the same time – ‘the person who’d had it before had been using it for repairing cars,’ Kieran says – and transformed it into a stunning home, which they share with their three young children. The streamlined 130m² space features a study, bathroom and open-plan living area, with three bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. ‘We were living in rural Japan when we were designing it and a lot of our thinking was based on how we’d lived there, which was quite open plan,’ Kieran says. ‘Most modern houses in Japan now are much more westernised. It is more typical of an old Japanese farmhouse.’ Inside, the property has a light, spacious feel, while one wall slides open, directly on to the garden. The house was planned around passive solar gain so it would catch 40 |

038-041_sfe07.indd 40

the light early in the morning, warming the house from spring to November, with underfloor heating for the winter. The paredback interior enhances the elegant design. ‘A lot of Japanese architecture now is so simple that there’s nothing there,’ Kieran says. ‘We like it simple, but not absolutely minimal.’ The pillar that runs through the middle of the house acts as a support, but also works as a decorative feature and is common to the Japanese farmhouse idea. The couple used a fallen oak, which they charred and varnished. ‘We cut the children’s heights into it, so we can see them growing up.’ Staying with Japanese tradition, a table is set into the concrete floor, removing the need for chairs that would clutter the area. Despite dating from the 50s, the classic green Ercol sofa looks as if it was made for this contemporary space. ‘That was my granny’s sofa,’ Kieran says. The couple inherited it and didn’t even have to re-cover it, ‘because when I was a kid, we couldn’t sit on that – it was in the parlour and no children were allowed!’

Clockwise from above: the glass wall opens onto the garden; the Ercol seats date from the 1950s; Kieran and Makiko; three bedrooms are hidden upstairs; the house catches the early morning light.

MY CITY GARDEN

My city garden James and Anna Buxton moved to Edinburgh in 1986 from Rome where James was foreign correspondent for The Financial Times. ‘We found a garden which was in very good shape,’ says Anna. ‘But I have made many changes over the years and greatly increased the variety of plants here.’ Situated within a one-acre walled plot beside their Edwardian villa, Redcroft, the garden provides an unexpected sanctuary from the bustle of Murrayfield Road. Set in its own little micro-climate, with very acidic soil, the garden here allows Anna to grow a wide variety of plants. In long grassy areas, James and Anna encourage wild flowers to grow. A wide variety of flowering shrubs and rhododendrons line the windy gravel path that leads to an orchard. Anna has always been interested in wild flowers, but only found her green fingers after moving to Edinburgh, where she soon set up her own business selling second-hand gardening books. Redcroft is open to the public twice a year in the spring and autumn through Scotland’s Gardens Scheme. ‘The great benefit of opening the garden is that it makes you try much harder,’ says Anna. www.scotlandsgardens.org If you would like us to feature your garden, or know of a garden we should feature, please email details to editor@sfedinburgh.co.uk SF EDINBURGH

other and daughter team Katrina and Charlotte are the brains behind bespoke satchel company Rhodesian of Edinburgh. It all began in 2010 when Charlotte was diagnosed with a rare disorder leaving her with crippling headaches. Things went from bad to worse when in 2011, after seeing many specialists, Charlotte was told there was no cure and that she was likely to suffer for the rest of her life. On the way home from an appointment, Katrina persuaded her daughter to visit the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home in Seafield. Here they were met by a litter of Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies. For the first time in months, Katrina saw her daughter’s face light up and so that evening they went home with a little puppy called Willow. ‘From From the very beginning she was completely spoilt. But I quickly began to see a change in Charlotte. This little puppy made the pain bearable for her,’ says Katrina. Any sort of normal employment began to look unlikely for Charlotte due to

her chronic headaches and fatigue. The only real option was to start their own business. ‘She could have stayed at home, but Willow inspired her to get up and build something,’ says Katrina. Charlotte always wanted to do something that supported British craftsmanship, with a charity element, and so the ‘fatchel’ was born. Traditional satchels simply weren’t big enough, so they developed the fat satchel, or ‘fatchel’. ‘I credit that little puppy 100% for inspiring my daughter to start her dream

30% Cullen Property report a 30% rise in investors from London buying properties in Edinburgh since the new second home tax was installed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland this April.

£1.3m

The Edinburgh rental market is approaching the £1000 average mark, with rents up 6.6% on the year to stand at £972. One bed properties rose a full 9.5% to stand at £678 on average. Properties let very quickly on average at just 23 days.

Northumberland Street has been named Scotland’s most expensive street with an average house price of £1.3million.

BREXIT

£2,791

After Britain voted to leave the EU on 23 June, ESPC found that just as the pound value dropped, their statistics revealed a significant dip in the number of properties brought to the market. However, this appears to have been a temporary reaction as sellers processed the surprise outcome, and the first few weeks of July have seen a recovery in the number of properties up for sale.

The average price per square metre to buy an apartment in the city centre is now £2,791.

ABI ELPHINSTONE: THE SHADOW KEEPER

26/8, Garden Theatre Indian medicine is as diverse and vibrant a reflection of a fascinating nation as you are likely to get. The ‘bonesetters’ of Jaipur to the plastic surgeons of Bollywood couldn’t be further apart. Aarathi Prasad’s exceptional study of Indian medicine, In the Bonesetter’s Waiting-Room, explores the elite at the forefront of neuroscience in Delhi to the basics of health in a Mumbai mega-slum.

13/8, Baillie Gifford Corner Theatre The Shadow Keeper sees Mol and her motley group of friends search for the amulet of truth. This is a sequel with all the charm of the Harry Potter series and just as much of the action.

TIM BURGESS WITH IAN RANKIN 18/8, Baillie Gifford Main Theatre Kicking back and telling stories, former lead singer of The Charlatans, Tim Burgess shares some of his outrageous and hilarious stories of the 1990s ‘Madchester’ scene. EDINBURGH BOOK FESTIVAL

PHILIPPE SANDS 20/8, Studio Theatre The infamous Nuremberg Trials formed the origins of our modern international justice system. Philippe Sands QC draws from his new book, East West Street. BIG FRIENDLY READ WITH THE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 16/8, Baillie Gifford Story Box Roald Dahl-themed crafts, face painting, colouring-in and more, all run by the friendly city of Edinburgh librarians. Discover the wonderful resources for children the library can provide, including its eBooks and downloadable audio.

ADAM BILES & JEM LESTER 23/8, Writers’ Retreat Adam Biles’ debut novel Feeding Time is beyond mere portrayal; it’s a kind-hearted, gentle plea for dignity and understanding. While Jem Lester’s Shtum, features autistic child Jonah and his single father Ben, who is emotionally hesitant and distant.

CAROL ANN DUFFY WITH JACKIE KAY TOM DEVINE 22/8, Baillie Gifford Main Theatre Tackling the uncomfortable questions, Scottish historian Sir Tom Devine hasn’t shied away from uncovering Scotland’s slavery past. The uncomfortable truth is relived in a fascinating and thoroughly well researched expo, detailing the disproportionately large part Scottish merchants, traders, plantation owners and even every day workers, had in the brutal Chattel salve trade. Can Scotland be described as an abolitionist nation, untainted by a slavers past? Perhaps not after this event.

WHAT’S ON SPOTLIGHT

EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL 5-29/8, Various venues The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world. Every year thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste - the festival caters for everyone. www.edfringe.com

MARCEL LUCONT’S WHINE LIST 6-28/8, Pleasance Dome (Venue 23) If arrogance is bliss, this show would be heaven. There’s nothing quite like a touch of Gallic superiority and an ignominious French attitude; in an act that is styled as a kind of self help guide, though it doesn’t seem anyone gets any help... be prepared for lots of audience participation and sound advice from the brooding French alter-ego.

BRIDGET CHRISTIE: MORTAL 5-14/8 – 17-29/8, The Stand Comedy Club (Venue 5) The guardian guest columnist and author has turned her hand to comedy in this stand up/ solo performance at the stand comedy club. Her brand new show Mortal take us through Bridget’s chaotic mind as she works out what to leave behind when she’s gone, but nothing’s simple, and on the way she explores the tangents of bigots, the Tories, ageing, water massages and legacies, plus a few more haphazard thoughts that may happen to cross the mind.

EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL

NISH KUMAR: ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS, UNLESS YOU SHOUT THE WORDS REAL LOUD 6-28/8, Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33) Nish Kumar bridges the comedy staples of history, democracy and capitalism, in his inoffensive, positive style which certainly stands apart from the crowd. A show full of genuine charm and genuine comedy, this is another not to be missed.

WILL DUGGAN: A MAN GATHERING FISH 6-28/8, Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33) Will Duggan examines the innate arrogance of horses and the discography of the band 5ive, and is quite certain you’ll want to hear his opinions.

KIRI PRITCHARD-MCLEAN: HYSTERICAL WOMAN 6-29/8, Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33) A rising star on the comedy circuit Kiri Pritchard-McLean looks to tackle some of the bigger issues, including genetics, gender, and her comedy career as a woman; or if that doesn’t tempt you, see if the middle class white woman, commits an accidental hate crime. Funny and clever, take the opportunity to see her ‘before she got cool’ at this year’s festival.

JAMES ACASTER: RESET 3-28/8, Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33) Panel show and Live at the Apollo veteran James Acaster takes to the stage once again in this year’s fringe. Technically brilliant Acaster puts together a fantastic show, but still remains at the fore front of up and coming comedy, his shows were nominated for Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Show in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, so this years is certainly a must-see.

ROBERT BURNS: ROUGH CUT 5-28/8, Scottish Storytelling Centre (Venue 30) A portrait of Edinburgh through the eyes of a man that has seen its highs and lows, Robert Burns. A historical recreation of Burn’s undiscovered (or unwritten) diaries from the heights, and then depths, of his career in Edinburgh; a graphic and forceful depiction of the real man, this piece couldn’t be further away from the biscuit tins and Royal mile tourism.

SUSAN CALMAN: THE CALMAN BEFORE THE STORM 3-28/8, Pleasance Courtyard (Venue 33) A home grown comedy great, the little lady bursts onto the stage in this year’s comedy festival, and after her recent appearances on QI, Have I Got News for You, and Mock the Week she’s bound to be on top form. No recommendations are needed for this modern comedy great, you already know she’s worth a visit.

STEPHEN K AMOS: WORK IN PROGRESS 4-27/8, The Stand Comedy Club 3 & 4 (Venue 12) Recently returned from touring the UK and Australia, Mr Amos is bound to be on top form. A stunning 15 year fringe career has seen him turning his hand to a variety of performances; Amos is arguably at his best when infecting his audience with his jovial thoughts mixed in with killer humour. A multi-award winner, Stephen K Amos will certainly not disappoint.

KATHERINE RYAN: WORK IN PROGRESS 4-13/8, The Stand Comedy Club 5 & 6 (Venue 319) Going from strength to strength, and rapidly becoming one of the most recognisable faces in comedy, the calm Canadian slinks onto the stage to deliver her cool wit and potent humour. Simply brilliant comedy mixing satire, impersonations and outrageous one liners, she is sure to this venue time after time.

Arts & Antiques There’s plenty to keep art buffs busy in Edinburgh at this time of year. From exhibitions filled with glorious paintings and illustrations to the finest jewellery and sculpture to buy or just admire

Doubtfire Gallery JINGBANG – myth, stereotype, history and pure cheek: a diverse look at the Scottish psyche. This exhibition explores how we see ourselves – and how others see us. Three of Scotland’s leading artists and illustrators, Bob Dewar, James Hutcheson and Iain McIntosh, bring their individual styles to an exhibition of original drawings, paintings, prints and mixed media. All three have an impressive reputation in publishing, book illustration and design. Wry, witty and stretching the imagination on one hand, deeply moving and sensitive on the other. From The White Heather Club through to The Marquis of Montrose and Elvis, it is all here in its hilarious, bloodthirsty and, frankly, unbelievable glory. The exhibition runs from 30 July to 10 September at Doubtfire Gallery, 3 South East Circus Place. Tel: 0131 225 6540, www.doubtfiregallery.com

The Velvet Easel Gallery The Velvet Easel, located in Portobello, is a contemporary art gallery which exhibits an eclectic range of art and crafts including paintings, ceramics, sculpture and unique jewellery. The current mixed exhibition, ‘A Way of Seeing’ opened on Saturday 9 July and runs until 30 October. The gallery is open weekly between Thursday and Sunday. Tel: 0131 629 1121, www.velveteasel.co.uk

THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Brigadier David Allfrey MBE FRGS is the chief executive and producer of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo WORDS BY BRIGA DIER DAVI D AL L F REY

One summer evening I was up at the castle and looked out at the spectacular view of the city below, north towards the Firth of Forth and beyond. The city had never looked so beautiful. Coupled with the bustle on the Esplanade, it was phenomenal. The Esplanade is always brimming with electricity. It is a meeting place for people from around the world, either on their way to visit the castle, or just soaking up the history.

Another favourite spot is the Union Canal. You can walk as far as you wish through various parts of the city. A place for quiet thought, it changes splendidly with the seasons.

The city had never looked so beautiful

La Locanda bistro is a stone’s throw from our headquarters on Cockburn Street. It is one of my favourite places for a quick bowl of straciatella soup at lunchtime. Pickering’s Gin have been the Tattoo’s

official gin partner for a number of years. The distillery is based in Summerhall, which is also a thriving creative arts hub. I love to spend an afternoon there soaking up all it has to offer: from art exhibitions to concerts, and the much-loved ‘gin jolly’ tour of the distillery.

For something livelier, I enjoy the variety of the music scene in Edinburgh. The Royal Oak and The Hebrides are personal favourites for live music. They both have a distinctive atmosphere and a quirky conversation is never far away. Above all, Edinburgh is a walking city; on a summer evening a wander home is a real pleasure.
