bit of outside perspective is always useful, and I recently got some from two sets of friends who had it’s all come to visit us from outside Scotland. One was about the from the chichi French town of Divonne-les-Bains diamond on Lake Geneva, and the other was from London. Both, however, left singing Edinburgh’s praises. It’s quite easy to fi xate on the downsides of your home city so it’s nice to be reminded of how lucky we are. Both sets of friends are foodies and drooled at the incredible quality and variety of the food on offer. The sport is amazing: if you watch, we’ve just had Murrayfield internationals, while Edinburgh Rugby and the duopoly of Hearts and Hibs are ever-presents; if you play we have

‘It’s nice to be reminded of just how lucky we all are to live in Edinburgh’ endless world-class golf courses, lovely tennis and bowls clubs, countless five-a-side pitches, and if you like walking, where’s better than Arthur’s Seat? Then they started banging on about the great schools, peerless bus network and cycle paths, the fact you can walk everywhere, the Festival – and Hogmanay. In fact, their visits were so uplifting that I think I might even invite them again – only this time I might make it in the middle of winter when it’s cold, wet and dark for 14 hours a day. I wouldn’t want them thinking we have it too easy...

hristmas is celebrated by an estimated two billion people worldwide. In Scotland the average family will spend over £600 on food and drink alone this Christmas. As early as October, lights begin to appear along George Street and Princes Street and whether you consider yourself a Christian or not, it is impossible not to be swept up in the festivities. But it wasn’t always like this. Christmas was shunned in Scotland for more than 400 years, with Hogmanay celebrations thriving as an alternative reason for winter merriment (many Scots still prioritise it). Indeed Christmas was only rehabilitated by Queen Victoria, with

SF EDINBURGH

Christmas Day only becoming a Scottish national holiday in 1958 with Boxing Day following as recently as 1974. Christmas has a fascinating history. For thousands of years, pagan tradition across Europe celebrated the winter solstice – the moment in the year when the sun begins to climb higher every day, signalling the eventual end of winter. Persians celebrated the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun; Norse culture celebrated the birth of their god Freyr, god of sunshine and weather; and the Celts celebrated the solstice as the rebirth of the sun, which, with uncanny serendipity, they knew as the Birth of the Divine Child.

CHRISTMAS BANNRY PLAYFAIR

This celebration of Yule was so powerful and widespread across the known world that with an if-you-can’tbeat-’em-join-’em twist of pragmatism, early Christians reluctantly pitched in, perhaps partly to make Christianity more acceptable to a wider audience. After pious debate in 350 AD, Pope Julius I decided to shift the birthday of Christ in 6 BC from 6 February to 25 December, a shifting of the goalposts that could only have been achieved by a pope. The Romans brought Christianity to Britannia in the third century when Emperor Constantine I converted to Christianity and Roman legions occupying Hadrian’s Wall spread the new religion to Caledonia.

formally split from the Catholic Church. Knox and five other Scottish reformers wrote the Scots Confession of Faith, setting the standard for the Protestant Church in Scotland and officially denouncing the Pope and Roman Catholic doctrines. Yule celebrations were fiercely discouraged. In 1638 the National Covenant was drafted and signed, further opposing Catholicism and the influence of the unpopular king, Charles I. It was at this time in Britain that Father Christmas started to appear. As a ploy to defend Christmas from Puritan criticism, writers such as Ben Jonson and Thomas Nabbes began to use personification and allegorical methods to portray Christmas as a jolly old man. In the stage directions of Nabbes’ 1638 masque The Springs Glorie, he wrote: ‘Christmas is personated by an old reverend Gentleman in a furr’d gown and cappe.’ This figure then goes on to say: ‘Resigne to thee! I that am the King of good cheere and feasting, though I come but once a yeare to raigne over bak’t, boyled, roast and plum-porridge, will

In the 17th century Christmas was celebrated by a daring few, despite several arrests Fast forward several centuries to the Reformation and criticism of the firmly established Catholic Church has spread throughout Europe. Protestantism is growing fast and under English influence, Scotland follows suit after the breakdown of its auld alliance with France and its breach with the Pope following the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. In 1560 Scotland, under the guidance of John Knox, the reformer and founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, 10 |

have being in despight of thy lard-ship.’ After almost a century of enforcing the doctrines of the Protestant Church of Scotland, the 1640 Act of Parliament in Scotland officially abolished the ‘Yule vacation and all observation thereof in time coming’. Catholicism did survive and returned in the seventeenth century, with Christmas quietly celebrated by a daring few, despite arrests throughout Scotland. Then in the 1840s, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought the Balmoral Estate and brought with them all the Victorian Christmas traditions we know and love to this day: Christmas trees, roast turkey, mulled wine, parlour games, carols, and many more. In 1880, 11.5 million christmas cards were sent in Great Britain – the commercialisation of Christmas was well underway. These Victorian customs slowly filtered down from the nobility to the middle classes. Yule became more about family and children and Father Christmas began to be less associated with feasting and more with gift giving. To this day New Year celebration stands as an important date in the diary for any Scot, however it is safe to say that Christmas has caught up after so many centuries of suppression thanks to Queen Victoria’s adoration of the festive period. So for those of us who, come Boxing Day, rub our bellies and groan at our own gluttony – be thankful and remember that Christmas as we know it jolly nearly never happened. SF EDINBURGH

irst knowledge of ownership of the lands of Bruntsfield is in 1381, when King Robert II’s Sergeant of the Burgh Muir, Richard Broune, bought a patch of land just south west of Edinburgh’s city centre and built a house. A royal charter that year identifies this estate as ‘Broune’s field’. His abode was demolished centuries later by the Earl of Hertford during his merciless rampage of Scotland in 1544, and the current Bruntsfield House, now part of James Gillespie’s High School, was rebuilt on the same site not long after. In 1695 the Warrender family purchased the estate. Sir George Warrender, a fierce supporter of Hanoverian rule, became Lord Provost in 1713. After publicly opposing the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion, King

Royal links Bruntsfield Links was the home course for Edinburgh’s and Scotland’s oldest golf clubs. The Golf Tavern was founded in 1456 and King James IV regularly played on this course in the months before his untimely death at Flodden in 1513. Club records show ‘Jamie the Fourth’ was constantly requiring new golf balls, suggesting he may not have been very good at the sport. This was perhaps hereditary as, in a letter decades later from the Royal household of King James VI, a confidante wrote, ‘no small quantity of gold and silver is being transported out of his Highness’ Kingdom for the buying of golf balls.’ Bruntsfield’s ‘Cock o’ the Green’ was Alexander McKellar, who reportedly became so obsessed with the sport he played the short holes at night with a handheld lantern.

On entering, the 7th baronet discovered the scene of a gruesome crime George I awarded the family with a hereditary baronetcy. The lands remained in the Warrender family for over two centuries. The 7th Baronet, also Sir George, born in 1860, is said to have discovered a secret room on the first floor of Bruntsfield House, hidden for decades by a large tapestry covering the door. On entering, the SF EDINBURGH

7th baronet discovered the scene of a gruesome crime. The room was completely undisturbed with ashes still in the fireplace, bloodstains splattered across the wooden floor and a skeleton reaching out to the window in a hopeless bid to escape his certain demise. The mystery was never solved. It was also this baronet who founded the Warrender Club, now Warrender Baths. In 1843 the Lord Provost announced plans to open baths across Edinburgh for the working classes to help prevent disease and improve hygiene. However, the Warrender Baths were not a result of this action. Sir 18 |

George and a few like-minded friends founded the members-only club which included the swimming bath, a billiard room and reading room. The baths were renovated in 2005, still maintaining the original Victorian layout and décor with poolside changing rooms. Olympic swimmers David Wilkie, Ellen King and Keri-Anne Payne have all trained there. The 7th Baronet died at the turn of the century and Bruntsfield House was sold to the Edinburgh Corporation Committee, predecessor of the City of Edinburgh District Council. After a brief period as a first aid rescue centre during the war, the house was

then turned into an all-girls school in 1947. James Gillespie’s High School for Girls was named after a wealthy tobacco merchant from Colinton. Upon Gillespie’s death in 1797, he bequeathed the family wealth to the city on the condition that it be used to build a hospital and school for poor

Caddie Willie Willie Gunn travelled to Edinburgh from his home in the Highlands in 1780 looking for work. He wanted to earn enough money to afford his own funeral when the time came. One busy day at Bruntsfield Links a player invited Willie, who had been passing the course selling religious tracts, to caddie for him. Willie earned one shilling for this day’s work and returned the next day, and every day thereafter. An eccentric character, Willie was known for his unusual dress sense. Everything he owned, he wore. He would layer three or four pairs of trousers, wear three bonnets sewn together and several jackets all year round underneath his long red caddie coat. Before long Willie became one of most sought after caddies at Bruntsfield Links. He was renowned for his kindness and honesty. He worked very hard for many years until one day in 1820 he announced he had made enough money for his funeral and left. He never came back and it is not known what became of Caddie Willie.

Dr Sophia was one of the Edinburgh Seven, a group of women who campaigned and eventually succeeded in securing places at Edinburgh University, making it the first university in Britain to admit women. She was the second female doctor in Scotland. The first was Dr James Stuart Barry, who was born a woman, a fact only discovered on her deathbed. After graduating from University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1812, she enjoyed a long career practising medicine disguised as a man. Though permitted to study at the university, the Edinburgh Seven were not popular with their male peers. In 1870 over 200 male students initiated a riot at Surgeon’s Hall as Sophia and her fellow female students arrived to sit an exam. Dr Sophia continued to practice

INSIDE EDINBURGH Views over Arthur’s Seat from Bruntsfield Links.

Muriel Spark Born Muriel Camberg in Bruntsfield in 1918, the Scottish novelist was ranked the eighth greatest British writer since 1945 by The Times newspaper in 2008. She was educated at James Gillespie’s School for Girls before attending Heriot-Watt College. After an unhappy marriage and brief time living in Rhodesia, Muriel returned to the UK and became a literary critic, then eventually a novelist. Her most popular novel, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, draws inspiration from her upbringing in Bruntsfield.

In 1780 over 200 male students initiated a riot at Surgeon’s Hall skyline and can be seen from as far afield as Fife. The construction and establishment of this church was enabled by Miss Mary Barclay, who bequeathed ten thousand pounds (well over £25 million in today’s money) to the Free Church of Scotland in 1858 following the Disruption of 1853 in which nearly 500 ministers of the Church of Scotland broke away to form the Free Church. The site was most likely chosen to compete with a nearby Catholic church, saving Bruntsfield parishioners from any unsavoury papistical ideals. After the purchase of the site, a competition was held for Edinburgh architects to build the church. Frederick Thomas Pilkington won with his High Gothic design, which displayed a simple exterior, much unlike the elaborate Victorian style of the day, that conformed with the Free Church’s disapproval of such frivolity. 22 |

have been a poppy seller for The Royal British Legion for the last thirteen years. My husband was a Royal Marine for 23 years and would sell poppies on the streets of Edinburgh every year without fail, so when he died I took over. It is a wonderful thing to do and so important. I meet so many lovely people and hear their stories, some are happy and some very sad. This year I met a lady whose son had been a Royal Marine. He was shot in Afghanistan and she wanted to place a poppy for him in the Royal Marines Remembrance Garden. She asked me to write his name on the wooden cross and as I did I told her about my husband and that he has a cross in the garden too. She

She asked me if I would mind if she put her son’s cross next to my husband’s asked me if I would mind if she put her son’s cross next to my husband’s, because Royal Marines like to look after each other. My husband would have liked that and she was so thankful to find someone else with a connection to the Royal Marines. I had tears in my eyes. When I am not selling poppies I potter about like everyone else. I try to get out every day and I go to the British Legion Club once a week. There are a lot of ladies at the club who are in the same situation as me and that is why I go. It is difficult when you are on your own, I don’t go on a Saturday night because I don’t want to dance with anyone else. I like to keep myself to myself. www.britishlegion.org.uk

RESTAURANT REVIEWS

Maison Bleue at Home 7 Queensferry St, West End We all love a good news story, and there are few more laudable and heartwarming tales than that of Home, a little bistro in the West End. The restaurant is the result of a partnership between chef-patron Dean Gassabi (pictured right) of the inestimable Maison Bleue restaurants and social entrepreneur Josh Littlejohn, who is best known for setting up the Social Bite chain of sandwich shops (and for persuading George Clooney and Leonardo di Caprio to support his enterprise). Their collaboration is on a not-for-profit basis with all proceeds going to charity – 50% will provide training and employment programmes for members of the Social Bite Academy, a four-year paid course for homeless people, and 50% will go to good causes chosen by the staff. Diners are also encouraged to ‘pay forward’ (basically, tip heavily), money which is used to provide a special service for the homeless between 3-5pm each Monday. Phew, I feel more virtuous just writing about such epic good deeds. However, the even better news is that there is no price to pay for feeling saintly; the food is terrific and priced pretty much at the same level as food at Gassabi’s restaurants, Maison Bleue in Victoria Street and the bistro of the same name in Morningside. Their stock-in-trade is a sumptuous fusion of French, Scottish and North African cuisine and this was in evidence at Home. We started with their signature haggis balls (oh my gawd they were good), saigon beef and snails in garlic butter, but the gorgeous mains of seafood tagine and slow-cooked beef cheeks with a red wine glaze and garlic mousseline of mash were the real stars. With a stellar apple crumble for pudding, followed by coffee so strong I could stand a spoon up in it, this was a feel-good meal in every sense. RB 0131 220 0773 | www.home-restaurant.co.uk

Good Brothers Wine Bar 4-6 Dean Street, Stockbridge The two brothers behind the Good Brothers Wine Bar are making a real success of this graveyard site down a Stockbridge side street. An impressive wine list (half the wines are organic, biodynamic or natural) is augmented by an enjoyably laid-back atmosphere and sensibly-priced food. We thoroughly enjoyed dinner: the highlights were mains of crispy skin cod, potato and shallot brandade with chorizo and red pepper salsa, and a bavette steak with hand-cut chips, bearnaise sauce. Best of all was the lovely pear tarte tatin. RB 0131 315 3311 | www.goodbrothers.co.uk 26 |

Main Man: The Voyage of Buck head chef Mark Downie

The Voyage of Buck 29-31 William Street, West End

You could be forgiven for thinking globetrotter William ‘Buck’ Clarence has just popped out when you enter The Voyage of Buck, such is the authenticity of this sophisticated addition to the West End cocktail bar and restaurant scene. Buck may be a fictitious character dreamed up by the owners – who also operate Treacle, The Blackbird and Hamilton’s – to fuel the concept, but the transformation of what was Burt’s Bar is stunning. Exotic Buck-themed cocktails, such as the Hemingway-in-

spired The Sun Also Rises, complement the menu. Best value are the small plates of food. We had the piquant seafood dishes: scallops with the stem ginger salad and walnuts, then a prawn, squash and pineapple sambo chutney with red chilli. The large plates of meat are flavoursome, accompanied by adventurous greens: gherkins in batter accompanied the steak, while the chicken parmesan came with lemon verbena salsa verde. Bring a second stomach for the tempting sweets. We wolfed down a blueberry rice pudding and a meringue with Turkish delight, vanilla cream, raspberries and rose petals. Epicurean & Cucina G&V, 1 George IV Bridge, Old Town

A revamp of the G&V bar has transformed what was once a rather intimidating space into an inviting and stylish cocktail bar, serving drinks inspired by the Scottish colourists and all day Mediterranean style light bites. Delicious, but we couldn’t resist popping into the newly refurbished Italian-inspired restaurant Cucina for dinner and were glad we did. Friendly and helpful staff, perfectly cooked lamb, homegrown hydroponic herbs and honey from the rooftop bee hives. A fabulous evening in gorgeous surroundings. MB

SIX OF THE BEST

Eastern promise Chinese, Indian and Thai restaurants dominate Asian cuisine, but as these crackers prove, the rest also have much to offer – especially if you’re looking for an antidote to turkey and festive fun...

Sushiya This absolutely tiny little 22-cover restaurant just by Haymarket can be cramped but has still rightly built a cult following. It’s invariably full, so booking or patience is needed but it’s always worth it for its Asian fusion food with a strong Japanese bias. The sushi and sashimi is peerless (especially the tuna) and prepared in front of you, while the raman noodle dishes are majestic. We also love the dragon roll. And if you can’t get a seat, they also do takeaway.

19 Dalry Road, Haymarket | 0131 313 3222 | www.sushiya.co.uk

Kanpai Yards from the Usher Hall, Traverse Theatre and Lyceum, Kanpai (Japanese for ‘bottoms up!’) is unarguably the best sushi restaurant in Edinburgh. The ambience is serene rather than lively, and it’s not cheap, but then the best, freshest sushi rarely is. It is, however, served with the sort of attention to detail you should expect of this fastidious cuisine, while the decor is understated and Japanese-influenced. As well as the sushi, try the Tokyo rolls, bean curd, tempura dishes – and drink your sake cold.

Nanyang Malaysian Cuisine The Quartermile development is all hi-tech chrome and glass, but hidden in the middle is this vibrant Malaysian restaurant whose ambience is at odds with its sterile surroundings. Despite the contemporary architecture, this is traditional Malaysian cuisine done beautifully, with classics like sambal squid and rendang beef mouth-wateringly good. The Malaysian curries, which are more fragrant and subtle than their Indian counterparts are also excellent. Well worth trying.

ASIAN RESTAURANTS

Ong Gie A rash of Korean newcomers – including Kim’s Mini Meals and Sodaeng – saw off Edinburgh’s longstanding Korean restaurant, Shilla, but our favourite newbie is Ong Gie. This lively Tollcross eatery is a memorable experience. You don’t even need to leave your seat to cook your own grub on your tabletop infra-red grill (although there are plenty of fully formed dishes you can order off the menu too, such as our favourite Doeji Kimchi Bokoom, or spicy pork stir-fry with kimchi). Once cooked, meat is rolled in lettuce with rice, kimchi and bean sauce for a Korean-style feast.

10 Gillespie Place, Tollcross | 0131 281 0526 | www.harajukukitchen.co.uk

Harajuku Kitchen Chef-patron Kaori Simpson used to be the personal chef to the Japanese consulate and trained at her family’s restaurant in the Harajuku district of Tokyo. Her stall at the Stockbridge market on Sundays is hugely popular, and so is her tiny but invariably bustling restaurant, which is beloved of Bruntsfield residents. Her curry recently won an award for the UK’s best Japanese curry, but we’d also recommend the pork gyoza, chicken yakitori, the gorgeous Miso soup and of course the sushi. It’s a little bit on the pricey side and the portions sometimes leave a bit to be desired, but it’s definitely worth a look (we recommend booking as it can get very busy).

Vietnam House Restaurant The first time I went to this unprepossessing little restaurant down a side street near Haymarket I was blown away. Run by a mother and daughter from Hanoi, it’s authentic, remarkably cheap and just one of the best options of any hue for eating out in the capital (although it’s also worth checking out the city’s other excellent Vietnamese restaurant, Saiko Kitchen). The food is stunning, and I’d recommend the braised catfish and spring rolls, while the pho (try the duck) is the best I’ve ever had. We loved the authentic Vietnamese coffee and green tea. And – joy of joys – it’s also BYOB. Highly recommended. 1-3 Grove Street, Haymarket | 0131 228 3383 | www.facebook.com/Vietnam-House-Restaurant-166964476662782/

ICONIC BOOZER

Iconic boozer MATHERS BAR, 1 Queensferry Road, West End A favourite pre-Murrayfield watering hole for many a rugby fan, Mathers has become a West End institution. Dating back to 1903, although recently renovated, Mathers has retained its historic charm. The bar boasts six real ale pumps, six lagers on tap and an impressive range of single malts, bottled craft beers and a daily ‘malt of the moment’ for dram lovers.

hen the Finch family came to Robertson Lindsay Interiors with a dream of moving their ‘cottagey’ kitchen into a larger extension of the house, Sally Homan was delighted to help. The space in question had been a traditional slate

The room fills with light and has become by far our favourite room and stone south-facing extension, built as a music room for their daughter, who has now left home. ‘We wanted a room where we could relax with our grown-up family,’ said Mr Finch.

36 |

034-037_sfe11.indd 36

Sally tried several different shades of grey before choosing a slate colour for the walls. She also took racks from the existing kitchen, stained them down to a darker colour and hung them up to create what has become a main feature of the room. ‘The Finches are very keen cooks and liked the idea of a proper working kitchen with things on display,’ says Sally. ‘It was the perfect combination of modern and traditional which complements the shape and finish.’ To balance the dark walls, Sally chose a light porcelain floor and cream-coloured kitchen units. The bespoke kitchen by Riddle & Coghill is modern with clean lines and integrated handles – lending a slightly masculine feel to the overall effect

of the room. For the lighting design, Sally used down lighters to achieve a good level of light for task work. ‘We ran LEDs along the top for soft light and pendants over the table to allow an atmospheric ambiance in the evenings,’ says Sally. ‘And in the summer, the family can open the doors into the garden and pull out the table for al fresco dining.’ Local family-run business Vintage & Reclaimed, specialising in handmade, sustainable solid wood furniture, designed the table and 4U Joinery did the building work. Mr Finch is delighted with the results. ‘It’s exactly what we wanted. The room fills with light and has become by far our favourite room – a real hub and a pleasure to be in.’

Clockwise from top: The space had previously been a music room for the client’s daughter; the two wooden wall racks for hanging pots and pans have become a main feature in the room; large glass doors open out into the garden; the pale porcelain floor brings light to the slate-coloured walls.

MY CITY GARDEN

My city garden In the heart of the New Town, this once-shabby back garden has been transformed into a Scandinavian-inspired space for outdoor dining. Prior to enlisting the help of garden designer Nick Burton the space was unkempt and overgrown. ‘It was rather unloved and I had to remove some very large shrubs which had taken over parts of the garden,’ Nick recalls. Now, with seating for up to ten people at the cast concrete table, a pizza oven, barbecue and corten steel fire bowl, the garden is now ideal for evening entertaining with the aid of outdoor fairy lighting and lanterns. Since it was finished a year ago, the owners have used the garden almost every day and, with the heat of the moveable fire bowl, can enjoy dinner outdoors well into late autumn. Garden designer Nick Burton worked in the horticultural industry across the UK for several decades before setting up his own design company eight years ago. www.nickburtongardendesign.co.uk

hen Simon Harvey Potts was 19 years old he spent two years travelling Europe, not quite sure what he wanted to do with his life. ‘In Spain some local artisans showed me their leather and gave me some tools to play around with – I fell in love with it there and then.’

My teacher left and the rest I had to learn on the job Upon his return to Edinburgh, Simon started an eight month apprenticeship at the Mackenzie Leather workshop. ‘I was trained to make a belt, a sporran, a book bag and a briefcase – then my teacher left and the rest I had to learn on the job,’ recalls Simon. Having become a master of his trade, Simon bought Mackenzie Leather in 2011. He has expanded the original range to include a wider variety of colours and sizes, using only the finest Italian and Spanish leather. ‘These leather goods never go out of fashion, they are still as popular today as they were 40 years ago,’ says Simon. ‘I get a deep satisfaction from making every single piece.’ www.mackenziebags.co.uk

BEAUTY

Party prep Following the advice of our beauty columnist, skincare expert Charlotte Connoley, we have compiled a selection of products to help you look your best for the party season

Former supermodel and celebrity facialist Charlotte Connoley has some tips on how to give your skin a festive glow

T

o prepare for the fast approaching party season, start by increasing your intake of water, fruit and veg to boost hydration. Exfoliate once a week with Murad Skin Smoothing Polish. Illuminating moisturisers are great under party make-up – I like the Elemis Illuminating Flash Balm. A slick of self-tan, such as the Vita Liberata range, will give skin a healthy glow, but preparation is key for a streak-free look. Exfoliate 48 hours before tanning and make sure your skin is well-hydrated by using a water-based lotion. A spray is best for backs – hunch over, spray over your shoulder and the mist will land on your back. There’s nothing glamorous about the application, but

52 |

052-053_sfe11.indd 52

the end result really is well worth it. For the rest of your body use a tanning mitt, starting at the ankle and working up the leg in sweeping motions. With whatever product you have left on your mitt, sweep over the top of feet and ankles. To finish off, there is a very nice illuminating moisturiser called Wonder Body by The Sanctuary Spa. It evens out skin tone and I use it to highlight key areas, so down your shins, on the balls of your shoulders and along your collarbone. Follow Charlotte on Instagram, @charlotteconnoleybeauty

ACTIVITIES TO TRY

Crowning glory It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Narcissus Flower School so the SF Edinburgh team joined owner Sharon Nugent and school principal Emilia Robledo to learn how to make a beautiful and entirely natural Christmas wreath. Mulled wine, Christmas tunes and the scent of pine, cinnamon and orange combined to create a heady mix of festive fragrance as we learned how to construct our glorious garlands. Narcissus Flower School run a range of short flower-arranging classes that change with the seasons as well as longer professional courses. www.narcissusflowers.co.uk/Flower-School/ 54 |

challenge for those seeking to achieve a decent stream of income from their investments. But also, the domestic economic outlook has become much more uncertain in the wake of the UK’s referendum decision to leave the EU. Investments offering higher returns invariably involve greater risk, and having a very broad spread of investments to help reduce overall risk exposure has rarely been so important. This is the diversification benefit of portfolio management. Ironically, at a time when the UK seems to be becoming more inward looking, investors need to become more outward looking. In contrast to the dark clouds forming over the outlook for the UK economy as Brexit approaches, fundamentals for some key overseas markets have improved significantly – more recently (supported by a more stable China), the Far East and Emerging Markets. In some respects,

Brown Shipley’s global multi asset approach to investment combines a very broad spread of exposure across global markets and different asset classes, tailoring investments opportunities to the specific risk appetite of our clients.” Building upon over 200 years of heritage, Brown Shipley are wealth managers, operating six UKwide offices, offering clients informed financial advice and tailored services on all aspects of wealth planning, investments and banking. THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Patrick Grant, Scottish menswear designer and judge on BBC2’s The Great British Sewing Bee, reminisces about his Edinburgh childhood WORDS BY PAT RI C K G RAN T

I grew up in Morningside and my bedroom looked out over the Braid Hills. Those hills were my stomping ground as a boy, I’d spend all day there getting up to all sorts of trouble. I used to play on the back pitches at Murrayfield for the Edinburgh Wanderers every Saturday. After Internationals we’d go into the stadium and see what spectators had left behind – we would find all sorts of strange things! I was always interested in fashion. I would save up my pocket money for months and wait for a sale at Corniche. Usually I still couldn’t afford anything, so would spend hours staring at the racks of men’s couture.

98 |

098_sfe11.indd 98

I went to the Edinburgh Academy where I was always in trouble. I often had to spend the whole day with the head of discipline. He was a very scary man.

Those hills were my stomping ground On Wednesdays I went to an after-school taxidermy club. Once we were stuffing a fox and had to boil its bones in some sort of hideous, stinking chemical – the smell was so bad a boy in my class fainted. I don’t think I have ever heard anything as ludicrous as the Edinburgh tram fiasco. The whole thing is madness, particularly as there was no need for it in the first place. The bus service is very good – you could have run it for free for the rest of eternity with the money they’ve spent on those trams! Patrick has recently launched a not-for-profit clothing initiative supporting British manufacturers, visit www.cooksonclegg.com
