EMPLOYMENT RESUME PITFALLS
Quite often PGA Employment Consultants are asked to critique resumes from our Section members. There are a few resume mistakes we find very common. Please review the following list and see how your current resume stacks up. • • • • •
•
Not including the PGA logo in your page header. You earned it, use it. Not putting the right emphasis on the first half page of the resume. This can be the most important part for the employer during their initial scan of your resume. Sending a resume filled with lists for duties and not accomplishments. Your work experience should not read like a job description. Sending a resume that has static content, meaning content not targeted to what the employer needs or is seeking in their golf professional. Beginning the resume with an objective or statement that sounds like everyone else’s. What can you say to the employer on one paragraph that highlights the impact that you will make based on the experience and skills you have that are targeted to what the employer is looking for. Not creating a stand-alone page for references and using the same header from your resume for your reference page.
Your PGA Employment Consultant is available to critique your resume. It is a good guideline to periodically update your resume and keep it current before you need it.

EDUCATION 2013 TEACHING SYMPOSIUM A SUCCESS
TOPICS NEWSLETTER
Almost 80 South Florida PGA Professionals visited the Country Club at Mirasol on Wednesday and Thursday, October 9th and 10th for the 2013 South Florida PGA Biennial Teaching Symposium. Presenters included PGA Professionals, Pat Goss and Will Robins, Director of Chiropractic Services for the PGA Tour, Dr. Tom LaFountain, Tim Kremer of Spirit of Golf, and Claude Harmon III. The seminar kicked off Wednesday afternoon with Tim Kremer, the President and Founder of The Spirit of Golf, LLC, a program utilizing mind/body coaching techniques that help participants access peak mind states for greater success and joy in both golf and life. Following Tim, was Will Robins, PGA. Will’s academy uses teaching philosophies such as “Purposeful Practice,” “The Golfing Mindset,” and “The Real Claude Harman III, Dr. Tom LaFountain, Jim Hackenberg, PGA, Patt Game of Golf.” They have allowed him to create a coaching program Goss, PGA and Education Chairperson Eric Veilleux, PGA that challenges his students to drop 10 shots within 10 weeks. Teaching through a group coaching method has created a tremendous business for Will’s academy with both adults and juniors. Thursday morning opened with a demonstration from event presenter, Orange Whip. Jim Hackenberg, PGA showed quick drills that the Orange Whip products can be used for to help warm up players of all abilities prior to a lesson or playing. Pat Goss, PGA Director of Golf and Head Men’s Coach for Northwestern University, as well as a cofounder of the Wildcat Golf Academy, was up next to discuss short game and putting tips. This knowledge and training is what helped Luke Donald, one of Pat’s students, to become the number one golfer in the world. Dr. Tom LaFountain, the Director of Chiropractic services for the PGA Tour, spent time speaking about how body fitness is directly correlated to the golf swing. He identified how certain areas of the body tend to be tight depending on the client’s daily activities, and how certain stretches and exercises can help those deficiencies, which will in turn improve the client’s golf game. Claude Harmon III wrapped up the event by sharing stories of his experience teaching various Tour Players and his teaching philosophies. He explained differences in the kind of information each player is interesed in, as well as shared videos of various players’ swings to show areas he had worked with each one them on. Thank you to all of our speakers and SFPGA Education Chairperson, Eric Veilleux for arranging this symposium. These professionals were so forthcoming and giving with their information. The Biennial Symposium is a great resource for South Florida PGA Professionals, and has played host to many great teachers throughout the years.

RULES WITH DREW NOT SO FAST, MY FRIEND!
TOPICS NEWSLETTER
A few weeks back, a PGA Professional called to ask my opinion on a ruling. It seemed a player while playing a particular hole hit his approach shot over the green and the ball came to rest on the teeing ground of the next hole to be played. The player’s ball came to rest next to a partially detached divot. The player instructed his fellow competitors that Rule 13-2 allows him to remove the partially detached divot. His fellow competitors disagreed. So, the player pulled his Rule book from his bag and showed them Rule 13-2 where it states a player may, without penalty, “create or eliminate irregularities of surface within the teeing ground.” The fellow competitors said they would have to get clarification from the Pro. They continued their round and before signing their scorecards, the players asked the Pro for clarification. If you were the Pro, how would you have ruled? Rule 13-2 says that a player may not improve or allow to be improved the position or lie of his ball, the area of his intended stance or swing, his line of play or a reasonable extension of that line beyond the hole or the area in which he is to drop or place a ball, by any of the following actions. The Rule outlines six actions but the one we are most concerned with as it relates to this ruling is the one that states a player may NOT create or eliminate irregularities surface. However, the rule further explains six actions which the player would be exempt from penalty. The one we are most concerned with is the one that states the player may create or eliminate irregularities of surface from the teeing ground or remove dew, frost or water from the teeing ground. Decision 13-2/2 says, “In playing a tee shot A misses the ball. Before playing his next stroke, A presses down turf behind the ball. Is this permissible, since the ball is in play? Yes, Rule 13-2 permits eliminating irregularities of surface on the teeing ground, whether or not the ball is in play.” Decision 13-2/3 states, “Under Rule 13-2, it is permissible to eliminate irregularities of surface on the teeing ground.” It is also permissible to break off or pull out grass growing behind a ball on the teeing ground? Yes. Rule 13-2 and Decision 13-2/2 and 13-2/3 would lead us to believe that the player was permitted to remove the partially detached divot without penalty. This is where Lee Corso says, “NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND!” The definition of Teeing Ground, “is the starting place of the hole to be played. It is a rectangular area measuring two club-lengths in depth, the front and sides of which are defined by the outside limits of two tee markers.” While the player’s ball was located on a teeing ground it was not located on the teeing ground of the hole being played. Thus, his ball was located Through the Green which is, “the whole area of the course except the teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played and all hazards.” The player should receive a penalty under Ruled 13-2 of two strokes for removing the partially detached divot as doing so improved the area of his intended swing. What would be the ruling if the player’s ball came to rest against a tee marker? Would he be permitted to move the tee marker or would he have to deem his ball unplayable and proceed under one of the options of Rule 28. Decision 11-2/1 says, “Under Rule 11-2, tee markers are deemed to be fixed when playing the first stroke with any ball from the teeing ground.” Are tee markers obstructions thereafter? Yes. After a player puts his ball into play from the teeing ground, all tee markers on the course are deemed to be movable obstructions. Before a player puts a ball into play from the teeing ground, Rule 11-2 informs us that the tee markers are deemed to be fixed and if the player moves or allows them to be moved for the purpose of avoiding interference from his stance, area of intended swing or line of the player, the player would be in breach of Rule 13-2.
