THE FAIRWAY TO RECOVERY Some call golf therapeutic. One with nature as you walk (or ride) down the plush fairways, soaking in the beautiful views that golf courses around the world so often provide. Others use golf as an outlet. And for some, it’s simply just for fun. But for Aadi Bhatnagar, golf made him feel like a kid again. In November of 2015, while attending the Indian Festival of Lights – Diwali in India, Aadi caught on fire and had to be airlifted to Ryder Trauma in Miami, leaving the 5-year-old wrapped in bandages, fighting for his life. Aadi’s mother, Radhika Paul, recalls in her book, My Lemonade Life, the days she spent in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami: “The numbness of the situation and the pain that my little son was going through had overtaken my emotional, physical and mental self,” recalls Paul. “It seemed, for the first time in my life, like everything was in despair and hopeless.” After a few surgeries and skin grafts, little Aadi started to heal. Paul and Aadi passed the time in the PICU with McDonald’s Happy Meals and dance parties. After a few months, Aadi was released and his road to recovery began – first, finding the fairway.

At such a young age, going through daily physical therapy can be quite grueling. As an alternative, Aadi tried playing golf and his progression back from injury has since been tremendous – he now competes on the 9-hole Links Tour with the South Florida PGA Junior Tour. “Honestly, I think he would still be restricted due to his injuries if not for the doctors and the game of golf,” declares Paul. During the burn, Aadi’s right side was impacted and, as a right-handed golfer, the sport has helped him build back muscles that are used during the swing, specifically at the impact position while hitting a golf ball. This, Paul admits, has helped Aadi blossom. “Golf has not only helped Aadi regain ability in his right side but it has allowed him the confidence to play a sport and feel like he can achieve, despite his injuries,” explains Paul. “Golf is a sport that you play for yourself and if you hit a bad shot, you get to go up and hit it again and I think that mindset has allowed him to feel comfortable trying to play.” Now 10, Aadi’s transformation through the game of golf has inspired his sister, Aanjini (13) to also play, both currently playing together on the Links Tour. In addition to providing therapy to Aadi as he recovers, golf has also provided a much-needed distraction as Aadi continues treatment for his injuries, helping him focus on what all 10-year-olds do: Being a kid. On April 9th, Aadi underwent a surgery that left him with over 50 stitches and restricted mobility. While in the hospital recovering, Aadi looked to his mom and wanted the answer to one simple question. “Will I be able to play Links Tour next weekend?”

*For more information on Aadi’s story, check out Radhika Paul’s book, My Lemonade Life, available on Amazon.
