South Florida PGA Foundation | A N N UAL RE PO RT 2020

MESSAGE FROM SFPGA FOUNDATION PRESIDENT TOM WILDENHAUS, PGA We hope you and your family are doing well despite all the many difficulties this year has provided. Our Foundation had many aspirations for great things to accomplish in 2020. No matter how many obstacles came our way, we are amazed at how our PGA Professionals continued to “serve the south Florida community and change lives through the game of golf.” This year proved our Foundation team is adaptable, resilient and committed to our community. In March, all Foundation programming was paused due to the impending global health pandemic. We had PGA HOPE programs set to begin, a full Junior Tour season scheduled and ongoing Smiling Fore Life events all changing lives. Due to COVID-19, all our programs have changed significantly but did not stop. Instead of in-person instruction for Smiling Fore Life and PGA HOPE, our instructors stepped off the range and in front of the cameras. They captured virtual lessons for our patriots of PGA HOPE to practice from home and for pediatric patients to stay entertained. Off the course and online, our PGA Professionals provided games and drills for our target audiences to stay active and fight isolation. Both #HOPEfromHOME and #VirtualSFL connected our Professionals and those who needed our help more than ever. As our nation remained locked down to stay safe, we desperately craved social interaction. That’s why our Foundation turned to social media to create connections. We hosted virtual hangouts between HOPE leaders and our local military veterans; recorded conversations between our Junior Staff to help our players; and shared the stories of those throughout our community who continued to give back. You can read more of these stories as you progress through this report. We didn’t stay off the golf courses forever. Our Junior Tour was able to begin hosting golf tournaments in early June. By eliminating touch points and implementing Back2Golf safety protocols, our staff was able to provide our junior golfers a safe and social way to play. We experienced great success across all five tours, with additional events being added to our schedule and surpassing our previous membership numbers. We look forward to providing more golfing opportunities for our juniors as virtual school continues for many of our Junior Tour participants. We are also excited to announce that we could assist a local junior golfer in her pursuit of higher education with our annual Foundation Scholarship. As you continue to read, you will read stories of the individuals whose lives have been changed through the game of golf, and specifically through our Foundation programs administered throughout south Florida. These stories highlight the character of our PGA Professionals who make our programs a success. Their commitment to their local communities makes these stories hit home and express just how great an impact our Foundation has made. We could not have made the impact on the communities of south Florida without the support of PGA Professionals, great friends and donors. Despite all the difficulties that occurred this year, we are so impressed by the levels of giving from all our friends of the Foundation. Whether support comes through volunteer hours or donations, we need both to achieve our goals. Once again, thank you and we look forward to seeing you at one of our events in 2021! Sincerely,
Tom Wildenhaus, PGA Foundation President

STORIES OF US While the pillars of our Foundation identify our interested focus of giving, these stories mark the success of our philanthropic efforts. 2020 certainly didn’t contain the narrative we expected, but it didn’t mean there was any less need for a Foundation such as ours. We are so impressed by our PGA Professionals and local south Florida community stepping up and giving selflessly. Since April, our Foundation has been sharing these stories of incredible acts of kindness through weekly emails titled “Committed to Our Community.” If you wish to read these stories and hear more testimonials of the change created through our Foundation family, scan the QR codes below.

South Florida PGA Professionals of the Island Chapter in Puerto Rico, in conjunction with the South Florida PGA Foundation, have refurbished a Habitat for Humanity home and gifted it to a deserving family. This is the eighth Habitat for Humanity Home the SFPGA Foundation has funded and the first in Puerto Rico.
The project, which was built in the boundaries of the SFPGA Island Chapter in Puerto Rico, began in late October when PGA Professionals began restoring the house in Loiza which was destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
The home was dedicated to Luis Anthony Ortiz Lopez, 26, a community leader at Villa Cristiana employed by the Puerto Rico Golf Association, and Angelica Maria Otiz Couvertier, 27, a pharmacy student at Inter-American University. Together, the couple has a one-year-old son.
“It all goes back to our mission and vision as golf professionals and as an Association,” said Tony Loyola, President of the South Florida PGA Island Chapter. “There is nothing that makes it more worthwhile as PGA Professionals than doing things like this, and the South Florida PGA and the Island Chapter have allowed us that platform.”
“It’s been a great experience for me, and I am thankful for the PGA Island Chapter, Habitat for Humanity and everyone else associated with the project,” Luis shared on the day of their dedication. “I am so excited, and my goal is to invest in my son Andres and provide a better and secure future for him.”
Since the partnership with Habitat for Humanity began, the SFPGA Foundation has refurbished eight homes and plans to build a total of 14, one in each county of the South Florida Section, which includes Puerto Rico. Once all 14 homes have been built, the Foundation will have granted $800,000 to Habitat for Humanity and more than 15,000 volunteer hours.

FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
Natalia 2020 Foundation Scholar In an effort to assist an exceptional student and lessen the financial burden of attending college, the South Florida PGA Foundation has awarded its third SFPGA Foundation Scholarship to Natalia Jimenez from Pembroke Pines.
a passionate understanding of how the game of golf can change lives made Jimenez the choice to serve as a representative of the South Florida PGA Foundation.
The SFPGA Foundation Scholarship was created in 2018 and annually provides one local student with a four-year, $20,000 scholarship to assist with their college education, received in $5,000 increments over the course of four years.
“Natalia is a very strong individual, outgoing with a very energetic personality,” said Tom Wildenhaus, PGA, the President of the South Florida PGA Foundation. “She has accomplished some great things in high school and has big ideas for her future.”
A former South Florida PGA Junior Tour player, Jimenez graduated from Archbishop McCarthy High School and is headed to Rollins College, where she will compete on the Women’s Golf Team and major in Psychology while minoring in Business this fall. “The moment I heard the news over the phone, I was speechless,” said Jimenez. “[I was] overwhelmed with happiness and couldn’t believe I was granted this incredible opportunity. My heart could not stop beating and I did a celebratory dance.” Jimenez is the third recipient of the SFPGA Foundation Scholarship and was awarded the honor for her work both in and out of the classroom. Incredible volunteer hours, academic achievements, leadership positions and
12
Wildenhaus found Jimenez to be very inclusive and philanthropic with her time to help others, aligning with the mission and values of the South Florida PGA Foundation. With the help of the SFPGA Foundation, Jimenez is looking forward to furthering her education to obtain the skills necessary to make a positive impact on society. “I feel that the connections we make with the people we surround ourselves with in college are the foundation for our future businesses and relationships,” Jimenez explained. “I am also excited to be part of the Rollins Women’s Golf Team and competing in the collegiate field.”
The South Florida PGA Foundation has provided golf tournaments for juniors since 2004. Our mission is to keep costs low while providing first-class quality golf to the youth of South Florida. We strive to provide opportunities to those juniors who possess the potential skill and aspirations to compete at the high school or collegiate levels, in addition to those who are new to the game. In addition to creating golfers, it is our Foundation’s goal to cultivate the next generation of philanthropic-minded members of their community. This year we watched our Junior Tour participants step up and give back through Birdie Club. A year-round opportunity for Junior Tour members to support our lifechanging programs is through the Birdie Club, a player performance-based fund drive to get Junior Tour members involved in community outreach. This program helps juniors gain a greater sense of pride and accomplishment beyond their performance during Junior Tour events. Every birdie acquired during an SFPGA Junior Tour event equals a donation from their team of donors, pledging a specific amount per birdie. The
junior who receives the most donations is crowned that year’s Birdie Club Winner; in 2019, Morgan Pichler of Hobe Sound was the winner. Since its inception, the Birdie Club has raised over $67,000 for the South Florida PGA Foundation.
JUNIOR GOLF
Morgan 2019 Birdie Club Winner
And in 2020, our Birdie Club participants could have a more specific focus with their fundraising. Junior Tour participants had the option to specifically raise support for local children’s hospitals during this public health crisis. Through the Birdie Club, a portion of all donations and pledges made will be given to a local children’s hospital in addition to the SFPGA Foundation programs, which include: PGA HOPE, Smiling Fore Life and Habitat for Humanity. We are encouraged by the next generation of the golf industry. They are bolstering the reputation of the golf community as “the most charitable sport in the world.” We are happy to be supporting their ambition and creating platforms to host their habits of giving back.

PGA HOPE
Allen HOPE Graduate At the beginning of 2020, it was our Foundation’s goal to host 20 PGA HOPE programs. Due to the global health pandemic, only three PGA HOPE programs were able to host even one lesson out of the six. All HOPE programming was paused, and the 200 veterans who were meant to benefit from this lifesaving program were asked to stay home and battle on their own. Due to the necessity of isolation, our veterans who were already battling PTSD now had to do so alone. If we could not bring the veterans to the golf course, it was our desire to bring golf to them. Through virtual instruction and drills sent for continued at-home practice, we launched #HOPEfromHOME. This involved creating a Facebook group to connect our HOPE graduates and our PGA Professionals through the many methods social media allows. Since then, our staff realized we are able to host tournaments safely, and that translated into providing safe and social play days for our PGA HOPE
14
graduates and interested participants. Our HOPE host facilities were able to provide tee times for participants to sign up and play with their instructors. To ensure they’re not unnecessarily isolating and not losing anything they have previously learned, our Foundation will be providing playing opportunities until we can begin our PGA HOPE programming again. “Thanks again for a spark of hope in the midst of this time of difficulty,” said Allen B., a recent PGA HOPE graduate who was able to play nine holes with three other veterans at Southwinds Golf Course during a play day. “It was a lot of fun and I almost had a par!” Ongoing golfing opportunities ensuring our veterans’ continued progress would not be possible without PGA Professionals who are committed to giving back to our local heroes. Thanks to the support of our donors, we can provide those participating with the resources necessary to continue their progress thanks to PGA HOPE.
Since the inception of the program, Smiling Fore Life Professionals rarely had to wear a face mask when visiting five healthcare facilities and creating smiles for pediatric patients through the game of golf. However, wearing a face mask has become a social norm for all due to COVID-19. And while “normal” no longer exists, it is clear those who serve in public health were even more greatly impacted. Many of our host facilities and hospitals were not allowing guests or visitors. Respecting their desire to protect their patients, employees and their families, Smiling Fore Life was paused but never stopped. Since we could no longer physically meet, we found ways to virtually connect and keep these kids golfing. Recording golf games, drills and stretches for our usual participants, our Professionals continued providing physical activities to fill these children’s days in the hospital. Our endgame: to keep these children smiling and distract them from the hardships surrounding them.
The unsung heroes of this program who coordinate the patients and the Professionals are the Child Life Specialists of our host healthcare facilities. To recognize their steadfast efforts on the front line of this public health pandemic, our SFPGA Junior Tour players wrote “Thank You” cards to the Child Life Specialist teams.
SMILING FORE LIFE
Lisa St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital
One CLS Team Leader responded to the notes of thanks, saying, “It was a very sweet surprise for sure. Our Child Life team rarely receives thank-you cards, so I really appreciate the kind and thoughtful words.” In another gesture of appreciation, the South Florida PGA Section has coordinated an “Adopt-a-Hospital” program between Palm Beach County Hospitals and local golf courses. Those participating donated food, delivered meals and bought lunch for healthcare workers and those on the front line of this battle. While we may not be able to visit our facilities until next year, we are happy to continue finding ways to adapt our program to ensure those smiles never stop.

As PGA Professionals, we have a great opportunity to give back to the community through the SFPGA Foundation, and I like to take advantage of this opportunity whenever I can. Although all of the SFPGA Foundation programs are very worthy causes, the two that I am most passionate about are PGA HOPE and Smiling Fore Life. I feel blessed to be able to potentially make a positive impact on a military veteran in need, or a child experiencing hardship. Whenever we are feeling as though life has dealt us a bad hand, it’s best to remember that there are always people more in need than we are. We should all look for ways to support others in need, and raising money for the SFPGA Foundation, so they can do just that, is a great way to do so.
Fred Baldwin III
Friend of the Foundation
I believe in all of the SFPGA Foundation programs. But if I had to choose one, I think it would be PGA HOPE. It’s so important to get our veterans healthy and back on track. These veterans sacrificed a lot for us, and the South Florida PGA is trying to give back, and for that I’m very grateful. They are involved in so many programs that give back to the local communities. All of the pros/staff I have met, through the various tournaments that I’ve participated in, are very passionate about supporting these charitable events. They volunteer a lot of their personal time to fulfill these charitable endeavors. The Foundation is made up of solid individuals who wish to give back to their community. They have chosen an ambitious schedule of activities to achieve their goal. I applaud their activities and their dedication to make South Florida golf and the local community better than ever. Donations are tax-deductible and also qualify for 501(c)(3) charitable foundation donations.

My favorite memory of the PGA HOPE was personally attending the program at Atlantis and getting the firsthand positive feedback on the program. One veteran walked 8 miles from West Palm Beach to participate. We were thrilled to offer him a ride home! South Florida PGA is local, and you can see your direct support be welcomed locally — and then those who tend to be involved will give back locally. It promotes a sense of community, and is something that can be readily identified with. It is also something that can be long-lasting; once a veteran gets involved, it provides skills that can be used for a lifetime. And for many the effect of getting out, playing golf, and connecting with others seems to have really increasing benefits for long-term health and quality of life... as it does for all golfers! We proudly support the South Florida PGA Foundation for the wonderful local programs it provides. They focus on veterans, kids and local families to give them extra support they need to feel confident in moving forward to the next stages in life — whether it is through golf or helping to build a new home! It is something they are a part of and will remember for many years to come.

For my entire golf career, others have greatly extended themselves to help me in my journey in this great game. It’s always time to give back! All of the SFPGA Foundation programs tug at my heartstrings. Each requires incredible support from all of us. All these programs support those less fortunate than myself. I don’t have a favorite because I love what each mission supports. It’s the easiest way to reach my base in terms of a no-brainer support method. All it requires is my time, which I gladly give, and my base to reach into their pockets.

I have always loved watching young kids learn and play golf. There is something so pure about how they go about it. That’s why the Smiling Fore Life Program has resonated so deeply with me. I have only been directly involved with PGA HOPE a little, but the stories and the real-life changes that have come from that program really touch me.
It was easy for me to assist with the Foundation, in part because of my background: growing up in a military family, an uncle who had a nephew who beat leukemia and was treated at the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, and someone who simply wished to help the community. I am very proud of the recognition our Association gives the military, and especially to those who have sacrificed. To use golf to interject a little normalcy in their day is priceless.
WILDENHAUS, PGA
When the Foundation was reorganized in 2009, we set a three-pronged vision for the Foundation. One was to maintain our support for local golf organizations. Two was to support each county inside our Section. Third is to find grass-roots programs in our Section that we can significantly impact.
We have come a long way, our growth has been amazing, but I can see a time when the SFPGA Foundation is a significant player in the philanthropic space.

As a PGA Professional at a facility with corporate presence, making the introduction to the Foundation’s programs I found to be a responsibility, not a job. From the beginning of the Foundation, making the connection between corporate America and the PGA was my way of forging a better and more successful Foundation.

After serving the Section on a committee level, the opportunity to serve on the Foundation Board seemed as if it would have farreaching philanthropic effects of which I am very proud.
I find all the programs that we are involved in as a Foundation to be areas of interest. Specifically, with me having benefited from Junior Golf as a kid and now being able to make a career and provide for my family through the game — I would love to see us as an organization work to expose as many to the sport as possible. So that they may be able to enjoy the game as much as I have been able to over the past 35 years.
MURPHY, PGA
My vision for the Foundation is to continue to offer the programs that have such a positive impact on our community. The Foundation continues to grow who it reaches and is really changing lives, which is fantastic.
MEADOWS, PGA
I should also note that my personal involvement with Habitat for Humanity houses has been both rewarding (nothing like getting to know the folks who are going to receive the house and watch how this truly changes their lives) and a great way to work with fellow PGA Professionals in a totally different setting that has been very fulfilling. As a past Board Member, I was invited to be a part of the SFPGA Foundation Board, and I can tell you that this involvement has provided me a significant amount of pride by being able to see the programs make an impact on lives. Whether it’s through golf (PGA HOPE, Junior Golf, or Smiling Fore Life) or through the building of homes with Habitat for Humanity — there is nothing that will lift your spirits more than watching golf help change lives and make a deep impact on communities.

FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS STEVE
WAUGH, PGA FOUNDATION DIRECTOR The Old Collier Golf Club
I am passionate about all the Foundation Programs that we support. Growing the game at the Junior level is vital for the future of golf and our chosen profession. Giving even a small bit of pleasure to those who face daily difficulties in children’s hospitals or military veterans is good for our game, as well as our world. Helping those in need obtain a home for their family or assisting a deserving college student with their education is also very gratifying. I was anxious to get involved with our Foundation and offer any help I could to grow the SFPGA Foundation and help encourage others in our Association and community to get involved. We have a great opportunity as well as responsibility to give back to those who need and deserve our help.

As the Section’s Junior Golf Committee Chairperson, I was fortunate to be placed on the Foundation Board. It’s been incredibly rewarding to play a part (albeit a small one) in all the great things our Section’s Foundation does for our community. The Foundation has been incredibly successful, so my hope would be to continue down that path with all our programs. It would also be nice to build a greater level of awareness within our community and with our SFPGA Professionals of what the Foundation does. I believe our Professionals would take great pride in how their Foundation is giving back.
JIM
O’CONNOR FOUNDATION DIRECTOR
I joined the Foundation Board because of my passion for the game of golf and its focus on the expansion of the game. Being on the Board helps me exercise my love for the sport. I stay connected to the game and create additional value to the Foundation through my work experience and exposure to the business community. My vision is to see the Foundation continue to promote our younger generation to develop genuine compassion and love for the sport. Golf is more than just a game; it builds patience, love for nature, integrity, honesty, connection, and humility. All traits worthy of promoting in our youth.
