The South Florida PGA is rolling out a new service this Spring allowing PGA Professionals and Apprentices to receive tournament updates via text. Simply text “PGATourny” to 69050 to receive updates on event deadlines, partnership announcements, event updates, etc. In addition, event participants will be able to receive updates from every event they enter. For example, if you are entered in the Pro-Official, simply text “ProOfficial” to 69050 to receive updates on pairings, results, partners, rain delays, etc. Key words for each event will be e-mailed to each event registrant after the deadline. NEW GLOBAL GOLF SALES PLAYERS CARD AND GLOBAL GOLF SALES CUP CHAMPIONSHIP Global Golf Sales and the South Florida PGA Section giving section professionals the opportunity to participate in a new tournament experience in 2012. The new Global Golf Sales Players Card will replace the SFPGA Players Card of previous years. The new format is based on participation and participation only. The professionals who gain the most amount of points over 9 qualifiying events throughout the year will be eligible for the Global Golf Sales Cup scheduled for September 24th at Old Marsh Golf Club. In order to gain eligibility into the Global Golf Sales Cup, a professional must have purchased a Global Golf Sales Player’s Card at the beginning of the season for $100. Once a Global Golf Sales Players Card is purchased, the professional will be eligible to start accumulating participation points, as well as be eligible to participate in closest-to-the-hole and other contests within the 9 qualifying events. There are many benefits of Purchasing a Global Golf Sales Player’s Card as a SFPGA professional. Some of these benefits include: 1. Eligiblity to start accumulating Participation Points to qualify for the Global Golf Sales Cup with an anticipated purse of $40,000 or more. 2. Eligiblity for Closest-to-the-Hole contests (1st place $150, 2nd place $100) and $1,000 Hole-in-One contest at five designated events.

CHIP SHOTS 2012 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERSHIP CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The 2012 Annual Meeting was a huge success, as this year featured a completely redesigned agenda to maximize the benefit to the more than 275 PGA Professionals that attended the meeting. The meeting took place at the Marriot Heron Bay in Coral Springs, FL. The agenda featured an education seminar in the morning which offered professionals a chance to renew their CPR certification as well as participate in a informational presentation on severe weather and lightning safety presented by Weatherbug. Weatherbug put on a great presentation offering information and consultation services to the professionals who were able to attend the seminar.

Recently the South Florida PGA Foundation grant $10,000 to 9 local charities including; Dade Amateur Golf Association, Gold Coast Junior Golf Foundation, Indian River Golf Foundation, Junior Golf Association of Broward, Junior Golf Foundation of America, Palm Beach Junior Golf Association, Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association, The First Tee of the Palm Beaches, and The First Tee of Naples/Collier. Karl Bublitz, PGA was elected as the new At Large Board Member for the Southwest Chapter. Both Lockie and Bublitz were sworn into their positions at the Annual meeting of the Membership held at the Marriot Heron Bay in Coral Springs, FL on April 30, 2012. Congratulations to both professionals as they begin their terms.
OVER 100 JUNIOR GOLFERS WILL COMPETE AT TURTLE CREEK CLUB
ATLANTIS, FL - On Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6, a sold out field of one-hundred and four junior golfers will compete at Turtle Creek Club in Tequesta. Five players who have already won Overall Titles in 2012 are looking for their second victory of the season; Derron Peyton of Boynton Beach, Alexandra Papell of Boca Raton, Daniel Whelan of Coral Springs, Zachary Smith of Palm Beach Gardens, and Claudia De Antonio of Weston. A strong field will provide for exciting competition this weekend. This 36-hole, stroke play event is an 11:30am double tee start Saturday and an 8:00am double tee start on Sunday. Players will be re-paired on Sunday by low score. Awards will be given to the first through third place winners in each age division (Boys/Girls 12-13, 14-15, 16-18) as well as to the overall boy and overall girl winners of the event on Sunday, following play. All South Florida PGA Junior Tour events are ranked by the national Junior Golf Scoreboard ranking system. Pairings are now available on the South Florida PGA website.
SOUTH FLORIDA PGA FOUNDATION AGREES TO BUILD HABITAT HOME IN PALM BEACH COUNTY After the success last year in Lee county, the SFPGA has agreed to once again work with the Habitat for Humanity in building a home for a family in need in Palm Beach County. Section professionals will work along side section staff for this great cause.

CHIP SHOTS 2012 JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT AWARDS Celebrating it’s 28th year, the 2012 Junior Development Award winning programs go beyond swing fundamentals. For the past 28 years, Golf Digest has recognized municipalities, corporations, individuals, associations and clubs devoted to junior golf.
The PGA of America is recognized for its groundbreaking PGA Sports Academy. The academy is not a specific place, but a detailed curriculum for PGA professionals to use in teaching juniors. It incorporates instruction materials for every aspect of the game: putting, chipping, stance, grip, bunkers and full swing.
This year’s focus was on programs that emphasize fitness and nutrition. Visit an enlightened junior program and you’ll see kids doing aerobic exercises and snacking on apple slices. The PGA of America is honored to recieve the 2012 Junior Development Award given to the association which best encourages junior golf development and demonstrates a strong junior growth of the game initiative.
Physical exercise, proper eating and hydration are integral to the program and reflect the PGA's commitment to nutrition and fitness. TOURNAMENT NEWS WESTON, Fla. – Ric Nalyd, PGA and Joe Joachim of PRESENTED BY: Bonita Bay Club East in Naples played a spectacular round of golf together today at Weston Hills Country Club on the Player’s course during the 2012 Pro-Official Championship presented by: Club Car & Tee-Marketing and supported by Sun Mountain and Ship Sticks. Nalyd and Joachim finished their round with a team score of 12 under par, 60 just edging out their nearest competitors PGA Professional Glenn Hall and his amateur partner Ron Gallatin of St Andrews Country Club who shot a combined team score of 61.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Alan Morin of Lake Worth was unbeaten as players from the Southeast Chapter of the South Florida PGA Section won the 18th annual Nelson Cup matches Monday, April 23rd. Southeast earned 77 ½ points, the Southwest Chapter 51 ½ and the Southern Chapter 30. Scoring was on a nassau basis with one point for winning each nine and a third for winning the 18-hole match. The morning competition was modified alternate shots with singles in the afternoon. There were two marches within

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – Kevin Compare and Richard Terga won the South Florida PGA Senior-Junior Championship for the second time in three years when Compare, the senior member of the team, chipped in for birdie on the second hole of a playoff Wednesday, April 25th at The Links @ Boynton Beach.
Both instructors at the John Webster Golf Academy at the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Compare and Terga outlasted Gene Fieger and Justin Bertsch SUPPORTED BY: of Hideout Golf Club in Naples after they tied at nine under par 62 in the mixed format event. Compare’s winning chip was from about 17 feet. In 2010, Compare and Terga shot 60 and won by three strokes. They did not play as a team last year. It was Terga’s third SFPGA title, including the Assistants Championship last year, the second Section victory for Compare. In addition to his duties at Webster’s, Compare also performs trick shot and comedy shows as Divot the Clown. Brian Peaper and Jason Hrynkiw, the 2011 winners with 61, shot 63 and tied for third. The 11th annual team event, which drew 58 teams and returned more than $20,000 in prize money, was presented by Cutter & Buck with support from Global Golf Sales and The Links at Boynton Beach.

MICCOSUKEE GOLF & CC ATLANTIS, Fla. – The South Florida PGA Junior Tour presented by the Honda Classic hosted Event #2 at Miccosukee Golf and Country Club in Miami, FL this weekend. A sold out field of 104 juniors competed at the hostsite of the Nationwide Tour event the weekend of April 17-18th.

Daniel Whelan of Coral Springs had impressive under par rounds of 72-70 for a two round score of 142 to win the Overall Boys title. Michael Anderson of Parkland, followed close behind with a 73-72 to come in 2nd place with a 145. With a Sunday score of 2-under par, third place went to Michael Perez of Weston with a 146. In the Girls Overall division, Carolina Garrett edged out her competition with a two-day score of 156; a 5 shot victory over her competitors. Claudia De Antonio of Weston followed in 2nd place with a score of 161. Finishing in 3rd place with a 162 was Shyanne Lovan of Wellington.

Alberto Martinez of Weston claimed the Boys 12-13 title by shooting an even par 73 Sunday, April 18th, for a two-day score of 151. Andrew Kozan from Palm Beach Gardens claimed 2nd place with a score of 153. Coming in tied for 3rd with scores of 154 were David Giandomenico of Boynton Beach and Hamilton Long of Palm Beach Gardens. In the Girls 12-13 division, first place came down to a scorecard playoff between Claire Fitzgerald of Parkland and Story Shaw of West Palm Beach. Fitzgerald edged out Shaw for 1st place with both girls shooting 79-79-158. Third place went to Alejandra Merchan of Weston with a 161. Notable mention for under par (73) rounds go to Daniel Whelan for Saturday and Sunday, as well as the following juniors for Sunday: Michael Anderson 72, Michael Perez 71, and Leanoardo Coll (Ft. Lauderdale) 69.
JUNIOR TOUR #3 INDIAN SPRING CC
ATLANTIS, Fla. – The South Florida PGA Junior Tour presented by the Honda Classic hosted Event #3 at Indian Spring Country Club in Boynton Beach on April 21-22. A sold out field of 104 junior competed on the West course. Claudia De Antonio of Weston claimed the Overall Girls title in a sudden death playoff for the second year in a row at Indian Spring on Sunday. De Antonio edged out Ashley Burke of Boynton Beach with a par on the first playoff hole. Both girls shot a 149 for the tournament. Finishing third with a 152 was Alexandra Papell of Boca Raton. Zachary Smith of Palm Beach Gardens won the Overall Boys title by 4 shots over his competitors. Smith was the only player to shoot under par both days with a 4 under score of 68-70-138. Harley Abrams of Boca Raton shot the low round of the tournament on Sunday, April 22nd a four under par, 67. Abrams finished in second place with a total score of 142. Coming in third with a 146, was Dominick Vennari of Stuart. Winning the Boys 12-13 age division with a 150 was David Giandomenico of Boynton Beach. Coming in tied for second place with scores of 153 were Miles Castoro of Fort Lauderdale, Michael Anthony Checo of Boca Raton, and Andrew Kozan of Palm Beach Gardens. Kaely Krayeski won the Girls 12-13 division with an 18 stroke lead. Krayeski shot a two day total score of 160. Coming in second place was Sabrina Fonda of Wellington with a 178. Finishing third with a 179 was Katya Barahona of Pembroke Pines. Notable mention for the tournament was Katelin Glass for getting her first hole in one on hole number six using an eight iron.

Living in South Florida, I feel we get more than our fair share of random pop-up showers. Given the frequency of these of showers, I’m sure we’ve all found ourselves on the golf course during one of these quick, heavy at times rain falls. Since we know it isn’t going to last very long, more times than not we stop playing and wait it out. Well, unfortunately the Rules of Golf don’t give us the option of just waiting it out. In fact, the penalty for “waiting it out” can be quite severe. In this month’s article I’m going to show some examples of when it is and when it isn’t legal to discontinue play. During the Allianz qualifier at the Fountains Country Club, some heavy rain started to fall during the round and got progressively worse until puddles started forming on the greens and around the hole. The committee decided to suspend play until the rain subsided and the water receded. Three quick

Now, if they had heard the signal for suspension, they would have been in breach of Rule 6-8b which states, “When play is suspended by the committee, if the players in a match or group are between the play of two holes, they must not resume play until the committee has ordered a resumption of play. If they have started play of a hole, they may discontinue play immediately or continue play of the hole, provided they do so without delay.” If they had not started play of the hole when play was suspended, they would be disqualified for resuming play when the committed had not ordered a resumption of play. If they had started play of the hole, they would also be disqualified because the Rule states they can continue play of the hole if they do so without delay. I would consider waiting 15 minutes for the heavy rain to stop a considerable delay.
About two weeks later we had a similar situation occur during the Honda qualifier at Mayacoo Lakes. Unfortunately for this group, they were in breach of the Rules whether they heard the signal or not. I’ll explain. If they had not heard the signal, Rule 6-8a prevents a player from discontinuing play on his own and it even states, “bad weather is not of itself a good reason to discontinue play.” When the players stopped playing during the 15 minute downpour, Rule 6-8a instructs them to, “report to the committee as soon as practicable and if the committee deems their reason satisfactory, there is no penalty. Otherwise the players are disqualified.” I don’t want this article to appear like officials are not sympathetic to players when it starts raining. We are and we understand the difficulties and obstacles to playing in the rain. Even though the Rules do not expressingly so state, officials due give groups plenty of time to put on rain suits, pop umbrellas and make any necessary adjustments when it starts raining. However, the Rules do not afford the player the ability to just stop playing altogether. If the player is making an effort, more times than not the official will give him the benefit of the doubt.

NEW & UPCOMING NEW SFPGA STAFF JoAnna Smith began her employment with the South Florida PGA on April 23rd as the new Player Development and Communications Coordinator for the section. JoAnna comes to the South Florida PGA highly recommended from the Tennessee Golf Association where she had been working since September as their P.J. Boatwright Intern. Her primary responsibilities with the TGA included support to the Director of JoAnna Smith Women’s Golf, website maintenance, and pro- Player Development & duction of media content for web and social Communications Coordinator media outlets. Prior to her time with the TGA, JoAnna completed an internship with the Tennessee Section PGA working primarily in the tournament department. Other duties with the section included design and implementation of a Pepsi can section marketing program that appeared on 70 million Pepsi products throughout Tennessee as well as all planning and execution of Family Golf Day at Tennessee Golf House. JoAnna graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and minors in Sales and Communications. While in school, JoAnna was a member of the Women’s Golf team and served as team captain from 2008-2011. JoAnna was a 4-time member of the Sun Belt Academic All-Conference team.
