a letter from the editor

Do all you young things realize that in the old days, we had to wait days, weeks, yes, even months to see if our photographs turned out okay? And by “okay,” I mean that the people in them could actually be identified? In addition to having to send film “off” to be developed, it was apparently a felony, at least in Missouri where I grew up, to remove film from a camera unless all 24 shots had been taken. And to do that, you didn’t just snap photos of your shoes or your lunch or a bug. It had to be Something Important. Instant gratification it was not. And more often than not, there was disappointment. Frustration. Irritation. Recrimination. The photos were too light. They were too dark. Little Jimmy was picking his nose in the front row of the group shot. Fan-tastic. Regardless of all the hoops we had to jump through, from buying film to loading cameras to waiting on the results, I’ve always, always been crazy about photos. And that’s a good thing, because my entire adult life, my jobs have revolved around them. My first career as a journalism teacher and yearbook and newspaper adviser came with many thrills, including dreading letting certain students loose with the camera at school. That was because I was the one who had to pick up the photos after they were developed. I always got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when the guy at the counter smirked as he handed me the envelope. Always a fairly good indicator that I wasn’t going to like what I saw inside. And yes, thank God the yearbook publishing company caught what I missed that one year in the early 90s. The baseball player in the back row of the team photo flipping off the camera. Dodged the bullet on that one. My second career equally revolves around photos. For scrapbook layouts to display in our store. For blog posts. For Facebook posts. For Instagram. For newsletters. For this magazine.

So what do I do in my free time? More often than not, I’ll be found scrapbooking, surrounded by photos. Author Eudora Welty said “A good snapshot keeps a moment from running away.” And there are so very many moments I want to hold tight and never let go. Like this photo of my grandson Drew, taken about a month ago. There’s just something about it that draws me in like a magnet. I think it’s because I can see, for the first time, a glimpse of the young man he will become. I’ve stared and stared. I see his dad’s mouth. I see his mom’s red hair. I see his grandfather’s freckles. I try to see myself. And I think how wonderful it is to be a part of him, this amazing creature who is my grandson. I can’t wait to scrapbook this photo. DREW DAVIS, AGE 9. I want to record, for myself and for Drew, exactly how I feel when I look at this sweet image. This month, I challenge you to do the same. Find a photograph that is special to you. That speaks to you. Then scrapbook it. Keep a moment from running away.

Electronic or manual. Take your pick. Choose sides. Or choose both! Personal die-cutting machines are an important part of a scrapbooker’s tool kit. Use the die-cuts simply, or kick them up a notch, like we asked members of the SG CREATE team to do.

Cutting die-cuts in white allows you to make them a custom color with inks, mists, paints, or pens. You can also use a pen to trace around the edges for an extra “pop.”

ONE • For the background, I cut the “love” file. I wanted to keep it mostly white, but I used distress ink and a foam applicator to make the upper left and lower right parts light pink. TWO • The smaller die-cut is part of my title. Again, I cut the words “so much” in white cardstock. I wanted to change it up a bit, so I inked the bottoms of each letter with blue distress inks and a foam applicator. THREE • To make the letters pop even more, I traced around the edges with a white gel pen.

Creating an ombre look is a clever way to add drama to a larger die-cut with clusters of negative spaces. Hand-stitching can also help emphasize the shape of the design.

2

ONE • I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the heart die-cut. TWO • I traced the heart onto the white cardstock. THREE • I blended three colors of panpastels in white, permanent red tint, and magenta to create an ombre effect behind the die-cut. FOUR • I attached the heart and then did some handstitching around the heart. FIVE • I embellished some of the larger hearts within the die-cut with little pearls.

Making a striking title collage becomes even easier when you make use of pre-made die-cuts and ephemera, available with many paper collections.

ONE • The reason I love purchased die-cuts is that the pack is full of different shapes, colors, and materials to use. TWO • I layered these die-cuts with some scraps and stickers to make the embellishments on my own. THREE • The last step is to put them all together based on the latest sketch as a big banner with the title.

Textured paper can add a whole new dimension to die-cuts, especially when ink is added to bring out the detail. Die-cuts also invite extra touches like hand-stitching.

4

ONE • I used textured handmade paper to create the leaves. TWO • Each leaf was inked with daubers in fall colors. THREE • I adhered the leaves with a glue dot so I could bend the edges away from the page. FOUR • The tree shape was run through a Xyron sticker machine. FIVE • I adhered the image; pierced holes about 1/8 inch apart on the die-cut. SIX • The image was hand-stitched directly to the page with floss in a contrasting color.

Get inspired by templates and masks, then create your own background page by replicating, re-sizing, and rotating a cut file shape with an electronic machine.

ONE • I used a die-cut image to create a random pattern of snowflakes on a 12x12 template. TWO • I used one die-cut file and then replicated, resized, and rotated, so that no snowflakes are alike. THREE • I cut the 12x12 pattern on smooth white cardstock, set the cut-out snowflakes aside, and used the “negative” as a background. (Peel the “negative” off the mat carefully to avoid tears.) FOUR • I used spray adhesive to mat the snowflake negative onto a piece of patterned paper. The paper behind the snowflake negative helped define the snowflakes.

Even though there are thousands of cut files out there for electronic die-cut machines, sometimes you can’t find the perfect one. Try altering an existing file to suit your needs.

6

ONE • Choose mug and snowflake files. TWO • Ungroup and eliminate pieces not needed. THREE • Place remaining pieces together and size to fit each other. FOUR • Group images and resize to fit layout. FIVE • Ungroup and cut individual pieces. SIX • Assemble; embellish. I added Stickles glitter glue to the snowflakes and inked the edges of other pieces. SEVEN • I decided to add mittens to contribute to my snowy theme. They came from yet another file. I initially cut the mitten tether from paper but decided to use twine instead. Just another way to make a file your own!

Purchased die-cut and ephemera packs are definitely time savers for busy scrapbookers. Pick and choose the ones that fit best with your layout, layer them, and admire.

ONE • After placing all the paper layers I placed the die-cut shapes. TWO • The shapes are of animals or beach items, so I surrounded them around the pictures to frame them. THREE • Some I layered under papers, some I put on top. FOUR • If it was an animal I did not want to cut the head off, so that helped decide which side of the page the die-cut went on. FIVE • For the coral I had it “growing” from the top of the layers so they would show and not be covered if I placed them at the bottom. SIX • I even used one of the die-cuts (beach) as my title.

Look for opportunities to use simple die-cut shapes in unexpected ways, like making an eye-catching banner from tags of different sizes, colors, and patterns.

8

I love to use products in unexpected ways. ONE • I die-cut some different sized tags and embossed some of them. TWO • I arranged them with twine to make a banner. THREE • I sanded the edges of the photos to make them pop a little. (This layout is also based on the January CREATE two-page sketch in this issue. I scaled it down to create a single page.)

Use mists to create an ombre effect on a white die-cut, then take it a step further and use a stencil with a small design to add a layer of pattern with paint.

ONE • Use a Silhouette die-cutting machine to cut out the die-cut using plain white cardstock. TWO • To create an "ombre" effect using spray mists, use three mists along the same color range. Spray the darkest color across the top, the next darkest across the middle and the lightest across the bottom. THREE • Once dry, use a stencil and white acrylic paint to add some fun stencilling texture. Apply the paint to the stencil using a make-up sponge. Dab the paint onto the stencil lightly.

Getting double duty from die-cuts by using the materials left over makes a positive from a negative, so to speak. Use large negative space items as a page element.

10

Die-cuts are absolutely everywhere and it's not hard to see why. They are fun to use and can easily make your layout into whatever you would like it to be. ONE • One of my favorite ways to use them (from a die-cut machine) is to use the negative space from a die-cut. TWO • When I cut these stars from the patterned paper I had anticipated using them on a different page. THREE • Instead, I took the leftover page and used it to layer with my other patterned papers.

Die-cuts can add dimension to a layout, like this garden of colorful flowers created by using wafer-thin dies and a manual die-cutting machine.

ONE • First I made the background and both pages using acrylic gesso and a stencil. TWO • Then I applied the same glimmer mist, panpastels, and gelatos. THREE • I love layers, so I made a lot on both pages. FOUR • I used cardboard and gesso and this wonderful collection from Glitz Design: “77.” FIVE • I made all the flowers for my page using Heartfelt Creations dies and the Spellbinders die-cut machine.

CHANGE #3

I flipped the sketch from right to left because of my pictures. I like to keep the direction of the photos looking inward, instead of off the page. It helps to keep the attention on the middle of the page. My son, Drew, would have been looking to the right edge so a simple flip of the sketch was an easy solution.

I changed up the background strips a little by adding a larger strip of cardstock and only having one banner strip instead of three as suggested on the sketch. Both of these changes were minor and nothing else on the page had to be adjusted to accommodate the changes.

For several reasons, I really didn't want to crop my main photo down to 4x4, so I kept the picture uncropped as a 4x6. The biggest thing I had to change was moving the 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 photo to the side of the photo instead of below it.

CHANGE #5 I used two 2x2 photos in place of the 3x3 and 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 photos on the sketch. Because of the large photo (4x6) I took away 2 inches of space intended for a photo, the title, and the journaling. Using smaller photos was a way to still include the same amount of photos while keeping the title and journaling in roughly the same place.

I stretched the one-page sketch into a twopage layout by repeating the 4x4 photos across both pages. On the left page I moved the photos to the left so I had room to add another 4x4 photo and then I added two 4x4 photos on the right page. Taking one photo on a one-page sketch and repeating it across two pages is a super easy way to turn a one-page sketch into a two-page layout.

As for the smaller photos on the sketch, I actually followed the sketch pretty closely. I kept the 3x3 photo and 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 photo in the same place and then added another 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 photo. I also added a 2x2 photo on the right edge of the photos.

I also changed up the banner strips. I basically did the same idea as the background pieces and shortened them to only show below the photos.

In place of the flourishes I made a row of punched hearts and then added a stitched line over them. Even though they don't have the same look and they are stretched over two pages they still follow the same general placement as the sketch suggests.

I created a two-page layout based on the one-page sketch by stretching the design. With this layout the photos might not look much like the sketch at first sight. I added in a larger (4x6) photo in place of the 4x4 photo and then used 3x4 photos and a 6x4 photo to extend the design across the two pages. In a way ALL of those photos take the place of the 4x4 photo on the sketch.

I still wanted to use the smaller photos so I used one 2x2 in place of the 3x3. I used another 2x2 photo in place of the 2-1/2 x 2-1/2, but moved it to the right to leave room for title and embellishments. I also added a 2x2 photo to the upper right of the 4x6 photo.

I used balloons in place of the flourishes and extended them across the bottom of the photos.

After adding my title and the balloons I didn't leave myself a lot of room for the journaling, as suggested by the sketch. My solution was to move the journaling to another open area above the photos.

This layout may not look anything like the sketch but trust me, it was inspired by the sketch. Sometimes a certain element on the sketch speaks to you and when you are done, the layout and sketch look nothing alike. I focused on the background strip, the one furthest back, as my background inspiration. I repeated that strip over and over along the back.

The other element I focused on was the 4x4 photo. I planned to extend it across the two pages but realized I could fit more if I switched it to 3x4 photos and I really wanted to use the cute Jillibean Soup frames. The original plan was to do one row of 3x4 photos, but when I figured out the photos I wanted to use, I had way more than that would allow. So, I added in a second row of photos and frames.

Because I strayed so far from the sketch and ended up taking up so much space with photos, I kind of eliminated the space for the title. I used an area in the middle, overlapping onto the frames and photos for my title.

I ran into the same problem I had with the title with the journaling. Because of the changes I had eliminated my journaling space. My simple solution was to include a 3x4 journaling block into the design with the 3x4 photos and frames.

I still kept the general idea of the embellishments as suggested on the sketch, except I used triangles, arrows, and stitched lines. They still fall in the same general area as the sketch suggests, but I altered them a bit to fit with my design.

This time I used the sketch to create another two-page layout by creating a photo block on the right page to match the sketch. In this case I made the photos block the same height as the background strip to help tie it to the left page. This is such an easy way to convert a one-page sketch into a two-page layout and you can do this with any one-page sketch!

On the left page I changed up the background papers a little. I extended the widths on the two background strips, one of them stretching almost all the way to the left edge. The background strips still follow the same general design, they just are wider.

In place of the banner strips I added a strip on the edge of each background strip. I also added a strip on the right edge of the photo block on the right page to help tie them all together.

I used the size of photos as suggested on the sketch but I moved them slightly to accommodate my title piece. I moved the 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 photo over to the right and used the title block in its place.

Since I went with a large title piece I moved my journaling to be included within the photo block. I used a 3x3 block of patterned paper as the background and added my journaling strips on top.

I've been on a kick lately of designing sketches that have small areas -- like these 2x2 squares -- that are intended for clusters of small embellishments. As you’ll see on the pages that follow, members of the CREATE team each had different ideas about how to use this area to best effect. I thoroughly enjoyed using Jillibean Soup products on mine!”

I loved that this sketch has lots of full 4x6 photos but doesn’t feel at all crowded. This is a great sketch for those who don’t want to spend a long time resizing their photos. I made one grid of 2x2 photos in a 4x6 print for the accent photos, but I easily could have used all embellishments there if I had not had more than four pictures to use. The 3x4 (altered from the original 3x3) was just a cut-down 4x6 print. I love being able to print everything in the cheapest size (4x6). The fact that there were a lot of different patterns meant that I chose to mostly stick with one collection pack of papers, die-cuts and stickers. It saves me a lot of time deciding what to use and I know it will all match. One tip if you are making this as a double page layout: If you start with two sheets of cardstock as a foundation and add all the patterned papers on top there is only one pattern for which you need two sheets; the rest can all be a single 12x12 sheet used across both pages!”

I love using sketches! For me they are a great starting point, something to get me going, and no matter how much I love the sketch and plan to follow it closely it rarely happens that way. Somehow, somewhere along the line it turns into something diffferent. For my layout I dropped one of the portrait photos and moved the grouping on the vertical panel to the centre of the layout. I also changed the small blocks/photos into three landscape photos but kept the circle and flag element with a sticker as my title. The flags at the top of the lefthand page were dropped and just replaced with a small grouping of chipboard elements and a sticker. I like white space and this arrangement gave me more of that. I loved working with this awesome sketch and the end result is very ‘me’.”

The background is made with stamping, heat embossing, masking with texture paste, and adding glitter over the paste. The interesting thing about this page is making 3D photos with the same and different photos glued one over another with 3D foam glue. For the large photo I printed it twice, then cut one into two parts and added both parts over the bottom photo. The smaller one was made with two different photos one over another. jillibean soup

Lora Dobrowolski, graphic design

meet the team

Lora started with Jillibean Soup this past year and brings past industry experience and knowledge to assist in developing great new products. Lora resides in Michigan.

Robyn Meierotto, graphic design Robyn also started with the Jillibean Soup team this past year. She assists Kimber McGray with marketing needs as well as helps prepare factory files. Robyn lives in Iowa.

Kimber McGray, marketing director

Jill Yegerlehner, owner Jill conceptualized the company in 2007, and launched the first products in the fall of 2008. Jill can be seen doing just about every job the company offers – she’s not just the “Big Bean.”

80 create

Kimber actually came on early in 2009. She saw some of Jill’s products in a local Ohio store and reached out to Jill because she had never heard of the company. Kimber assists with the design team, coordinates all marketing strategies and works along with the sales team to foster the independent store sales experience.

Juliana Michaels, graphic design Juliana is the newest team member for the company; she literally just started at the new year, however Juliana has been a longtime member of the Jillibean Sop fan club and has served on the design team.

Kathy Gallagher, director sales/creative development (Hampton) Called the “handler, Kathy loves opportunities to design anything and everything for chain stores/mass market opportunities. She can be found in New York City.

Teka Cochonneau, lead graphic design Teka heads up the graphic design team. She works along-side Jill to develop fun, innovative, exciting new products. Basically, Teka takes those visions in Jill’s head and makes them into a reality. Teka can be found in Berlin, Germany.

Kim Wells, administrative assistant Does anything Jill, the owner asks her to do (within reason). Kim is pretty much the only one that works out of the Dublin offices with Jill. The rest of the team can be found all over the U.S. (and one in Germany).

Jenifer Harkin, blog hostess Jen coordinates all the design team projects for the month, schedules the posts and charms with her witty humor in the blog posts. She just happens to know Jill from her college days at the University of Iowa.

Lynn Toler, customer services & independent sales manager (Hampton) Lynn is the southernaccented lady heard on the phone when anyone has a question or wants to place an order. She is part of the Hampton crew, based out of Washington, North Carolina. Lynn takes care of all of the independent store needs.

did you know?

Jill Yegerlehner (owner of Jillibean Soup) doesn’t really like soup.

1 2

Jillibean Soup started as a concept at the end of 2007 and we launched our first products in the fall of 2008. The first collections released were all kraft based. Jill has a biology degree and most of her experience prior to Jillibean Soup was in food science. At one time she was a milk-tester extraordinaire in a lab!

3

82 create

The company name actually started as Jill’s Attic. After about three months into it, we found a product on the internet with a trademarked Jill’s Attic logo. We had to start all over, so Jill sat down and made a list of about 20 names. She picked the best six, sent them to her friends and they ALL came back liking Jillibean Soup.

4

Jill’s old childhood neighbor called her Jillibean (see #4).

5

create 83

did you know?

Our tradeshow booth was built in Jill’s garage by her husband Eric. We continue to use the same booth after six years and would say it’s actually trademarked (see the corrugated walls in our booth photos). This was on purpose to “stand out” in the crowd.

6

Our paper collection names are all soup names. All the papers within the collections are ingredients. Some are just plays on words, but they work! This wasn’t the intent when Jillibean Soup was named but after designing our first paper line, it was decided “soup” could be used for a whole marketing ploy.

7

86 create

The one product that probably put us on the map was our corrugated alphas. We released them at the Orlando, Florida Summer CHA show. Kimber and Jill literally picked up the prototypes on the way driving down to Florida!

8

Jillibean Soup’s offices are located in Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. Jill, her husband Eric, three daughters (Leah, Kameryn, Brooke), and their dog Lily also live in Dublin.

9

We have had Canadian Customs call our offices because they wanted to know if the product in the boxes was actually “soup.”

10

Jillibean Soup

The names of the Jillibean Soup collections always intrigue me and it's fun that they are all types of soup. Their color palette always has a bit of a softer look to it, even with bright colors, which is one of my favorite things. When I saw this picture of my cousin's adorable new baby and his dad, I had to scrap it and the ‘Cool as a Cucumber’ collection was perfect. And then as I went through the die-cut notebook funny tags and saw this to-do list, I had to use it! It's Dan's daily mantra!”

It wasn’t easy for me to use all six swatches, but I love to challenge myself! I started with a picture in my head and then decided that I needed bright fall photos for this layout. Then I chose papers that matched these photos and color scheme, and everything else was just fun -- playing with die-cuts and embellishments.”

I loved working with this colour challenge. Anytime I don’t have to think about something too much is great. I used the Crate Paper range and the colours matched perfectly, so that made it even easier. I chose to use a black and white photo because it worked so well with the layout theme and colour scheme. And even better is the fact that those colours really appeal to me lately -- I think I may be a little in love with that paper range, too.”

Staying in touch and recording thoughts and feelings has never been easier. We write on our Facebook pages, on Instagram, on Twitter, on our smartphones. Why not take advantage of what has already been jotted down? It’s authentic journaling at its best.

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT: • Show how social media posts or text messages can become authentic journaling on a scrapbook layout.

I barely use my phone. My kids are always nagging me about making better use of it. I don't text, although I do receive texts from my kids, and I'm inconsistent about checking on messages. So, I decided to make this page about my first foray into smart phones and texting. I included some actual texts from my kids. (My page is inspired by the single page sketch from the September 2014 issue of CREATE magazine.)

GOT TEXT? Patterned paper: Heidi Swapp, Echo Park Paper, Pink Paislee, Teresa Collins; cardstock: Colorbok; letter stickers: Bella Blvd, American Crafts; stickers: Simple Stories; cards: Jillibean Soup, Pink Paislee; triangles: Heidi Swapp; chipboard bubbles: Blue Fern; punctuation shapes: Recollections; embossing folder: Lifestyle Crafts; other: mists, paint.

HEATHER’S JOURNALING...

I got my first smartphone in 2012 only because I needed to communicate with the kids with their ever-changing schedules. The first lesson was hilarious to them. “Use your thumbs, not your forefinger. Why are you tapping the phone so hard? Scroll this way. This is so easy; why aren't you getting it?” Setting up funny ringtones. For about six months it lay unused. Then I tried, but I kept misplacing it. I'd find texts days later. Often the sound button got knocked off or it did ring and I didn't know what the sound was. Or it was in my car when I was elsewhere. Or the battery went dead. The kids constantly nagged me. “What's the point in having a phone if you don't answer? Keep it with you.” The kids would text each other, then the one at home would come and pass the message on in person. Now, I check texts frequently, but I hate that it's mainly demands. “Get this. Pick me up. I need...” There's no room for negotiation like in a phone call.

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT: • Show how social media posts or text messages can become authentic journaling on a scrapbook layout.

I saw this challenge and panic set in! I wasn't sure how to do it or what I was going to do. However, in the end, it was easier than I thought. Once I thought of the perfect photo to use and tracked it down on my Facebook page, the layout came together really easily. The journaling is my status message along with the hashtags. To tie it together, I used one of the hashtags as a title. What an easy way to get some journaling down on your pages!”

BANNER

“I love using the tag sketches because it is a good way to use my scrap paper and leftover embellishments. I mainly stuck with the original design, except I offset the circle and added another banner to combine both elements of the sketch since this piece is a bit wider than a typical tag. (The lace is off an old tank top...I never throw lace away!)”

NOTEPAD

“I used the tag sketch to alter a notepad. I found the sketch very easy to adapt, mostly just eye-balling to get the sizes right. When cutting banners and trying to guess sizes, I often will take ordinary copy paper (scraps) and cut 'samples' before I cut into my real paper. A great way to prevent those wasteful 'too short or too narrow' cuts!

“I jazzed up the cover of a cheap little notebook by adding patterned paper, washi tape and sequins. “I have so many rich memories of New Years, going back to celebrations on my grandparents’ farm as a child, to quiet holidays at my own home now. I love a clean slate and new beginning -- and I love how we always celebrate it together with family. The calendar changes, but the traditions remain the same. I pulled together images from several years, and it was fun to see it all come together. I flipped the sketch to work with the flow I wanted, and I journaled little phrases on the photos, rather than block journaling. Another family memory captured!

But as I looked through my photos I saw so many kinds of love that abound in our lives, for beloved and lost pets, for sisters and brothers and parents and grandparents. It is those bonds that bring my scrapbooking so much joy. These photos of my daughter and my mother-in-law capture one of those moments I scrapbook for, where you can almost see the physical manifestation of their bond together. I wanted the theme to carry through the products, with soft pink and teal flowers and watercolour, lots of homey stitching and happy gold glitter. crafting in the real

world

question and answer session

We’re on a year-long mission to check in with people around the country who love the craft of scrapbooking and its place in their lives. First stop, Arlington, Texas, where Stephanie Feltus shares her style, budget, scrap space, and more with CREATE readers.

.................

stephanie feltus

crafting in the

REAL world

Meet Stephanie Feltus, a 28-year-old case manager from Arlington, Texas. She has agreed to give us an inside look at how scrapbooking has impacted her life.

How and when did you get started scrapbooking? I first started papercrafting in 2000 at the age of 14. My cousin makes cards, and for my 14th birthday she sent me a starter kit with card bases, some patterned paper, stamps, stamp cleaner, ink, embossing powder and other supplies. I had a blast making cards for family and friends. Not long after I ventured into scrapbooking on my own and the rest is history. I think it is really cool that I have been scrapping exactly half of my life!

Advice for finding more time? I try to carve out at least 15-30 minutes each weeknight to scrap or do something crafty. My scrap space allows me to leave a layout in progress on my desk. When I can, I sit at my desk and work on my layout or project. If I don’t have a current layout in progress, I may use that time to plan a layout or put a page kit together to scrap at a later date. Carving out smaller chunks of time makes it more manageable on weeknights when I'm tired from working all day.

266 create

How much time do you spend scrapbooking? It varies from week to week, but on average I spend about 3-5 hours a week scrapbooking. I work full time so that hinders my scrap time. I sure wish I could scrap full time! Most of my scrapbooking happens in the evening and on the weekend.

crafting in the

REAL world

What is your scrap space like? My scrap space is small, but I make it work. I have a good size desk that has plenty of workspace on top and also has two cabinets and a large drawer for storage. I also have other storage containers that house my Scrapbook Generation kits, patterned paper, embellishments and punches. I used to only have room to scrap on the kitchen table. That just did not work well. Getting my own scrap desk was one of the best decisions ever.

What are your best organizational tips? Having my scrapbook paper sorted by manufacturer has been one of the best organizational methods for me. Collections from manufacturers tend to have similar colors and usually coordinate well. I know some scrappers prefer to have their paper sorted by theme, but by manufacturer has really helped streamline my scrapping process when it comes to picking papers for my layouts.

How do you describe your style? My scrapbooking style is very clean and linear. I love using Scrapbook Generation sketches because they complement my style very well. I also love using bright, cheerful colors on my layouts.

Do you have a set budget for scrapbooking? I currently do not have a budget set up, but in the past I have had a budget of $50 per month. Most of the time I did not spend all of my budget each month. In the recent months I have been focusing on spending less and using more of my abundant scrap stash.

268 create

Is there a social aspect to your scrapbooking? I am part of an online scrapbook forum. Being a part of the wonderful group of kind, funny and creative women has been amazing. We often do challenges, classes, online crops and in person crops. It has really helped boost my scrapbooking productivity!

stephanie feltus

crafting in the

REAL world

Where do you get your inspiration? I get most of my inspiration from the online scrapbook forum I am a member of. I also get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest.

What do you enjoy most...design or techniques? I love the design aspect of scrapbooking. I like the process of figuring out where I want to place the paper, photos and embellishments.

What does this hobby mean to your life? Scrapbooking means a lot to me. I love that I am preserving memories while being creative in the process. It is an added bonus that my family and friends always enjoy seeing what I scrap and the cards I make for them.
