It’s true confession time. I was a scrapbooker before scrapbooking was cool. Long before the Nineties when scrapbooking became the hottest hobby around, I had tried to make my memory books as creative as possible. Without the wonderful papers and supplies available today, I still did what I could by drawing directly on the scrapbook pages with colored markers. As you can see, a career in art has never been in the books for me, but I did my best! The three pages here are from the high school scrapbook I completed in 1969, then had to take apart in 2003 because -- just as the experts say -- the acidity of the pages and newspaper clippings had ruined several photos. But being a true scrapbooker, I took photos of each page -- and yes -made new scrapbook pages about the old scrapbook pages.
When I was making that handdrawn high school scrapbook 46 years ago, I had no idea that after my first 30-year career, scrapbooking would become my livelihood, as well as my favorite hobby. Because just like all those years ago, I still have the desire to record my life. I want to remember. Pitiful as those pages look today, I can still see them and be transported back to my FHA activities, my senior play, my graduation. So much of what we worry about doesn’t matter. Your style doesn’t matter. Your skill level doesn’t matter. Your tools and supplies don’t matter. Your space doesn’t matter. What matters is that you take the time, as often as you can, to record a memory. It’s one of the nicest things you can do for yourself.

SHAKER CARD: Fold cardstock to create card base. Layer cardstock and patterned paper onto card. Attach a piece of clear packing to a journal card. Arrange sequins onto card and adhere journal card on top of sequins with foam adhesive to create a shaker. Embellish with die cuts, flower, stick pin, and enamel dots. GIFT BAG: Stencil a plain gift bag and adhere patterned paper. Cut a white fence shape from machine or template and adhere to bag. Die cut a strip of grass and two strawberries and adhere to bag. Layer floral stickers and a sentiment to bag. Tie a bow to the bag handle with dyed seam binding ribbon. Die cut a paper bow to attach to the handle and adhere a flower to the center of the bow. Finish bag by adding small embellishments such as color drops and enamel dots. TREAT BASKET: Cut basket from machine or template and assemble. Layer patterned paper, stickers and die-cuts to the front of basket. Adhere stickers and enamel dots to front of basket. Attach a die-cut tag to back of the basket and fill basket with die-cut strawberries and treats. Don’t have a purchased stencil that is the right size or shape for your project? Solve that problem by making your own stencil with an electronic die-cutting machine,
ONE • I cut out the starburst stencil using my Silhouette Cameo and a stencil blank. TWO • To keep the stencil in place, I taped it onto the cardstock with a few pieces of washi tape. THREE • In a quick, sweeping motion, I sprayed the mist lightly over the stencil. FOUR • Next, I blotted off the excess mist with a paper towel. FIVE • The last step was to carefully remove the washi tape and lift off the stencil.

Gold foil seems to be everywhere, and you can use stencils to create the look without the use of heat and special tools. A few simple steps, and you have shine to spare.

ONE • I started with a heart stencil, spreading the back with a liquid adhesive that would become temporary once dry. TWO • After the adhesive was dry, I placed it onto patterned paper, making sure there were no gaps for the foil glue I would apply next to seep underneath. THREE • Foil glue was added into the hearts and a thin coat spread with a small scraper. FOUR • I removed the stencil, waited for the glue to dry, then added the foil, shiny side up, burnishing it with my finger.

Create a subtle backdrop for your photo by using a stencil and texture paste. A stencil with small geometric pattern can add interest without competing with other elements.
ONE • Decide where you want your photo stack to go on the layout and draw a rough outline of it with a pencil. TWO • Choose a stencil and place it where you want the medium (such as the texture paste on my layout) you are using to be visible. THREE • Apply texture paste through the stencil with a palette knife. Be careful to not smudge the paste when removing the stencil. FOUR • Let the layout dry on its own, or speed up the drying process with a heat gun.

Using masking fluid with a stencil can allow creativity with mists and inks. The fluid will keep areas of the project free of color, and then is rubbed off when you are finished.

ONE • After choosing the stencil I wanted for this layout, I placed it on the cardstock and used a brush to apply masking fluid (which forms a waterproof film). TWO • Once that dried, it was time to play with liquid inks. I sprayed brown and red mists over the stencil. THREE • Next, I rubbed with my fingers to remove the masking fluid. FOUR • I used stamps to make some black ink stains. FIVE • After finishing the stamping, I completed the layout with papers and embellishments.

Shaped stencils are the perfect way to create one-of-a-kind embellishments. Gelatos, water, and a little blending can be used for a shimmery watercolor look.
ONE • Using a marker (like a Sharpie fine point), trace the stencil on cardstock. Cut out, leaving a small border around the shape. TWO • Color in the traced shape with gelatos. THREE • Add water with a paintbrush, smoothing, blending. Repeat twice, adding more color and blending, letting it dry in between. FOUR • Add glimmer with a glitter pen. (The gelatos I used had a bit of shimmer already). FIVE • Add to project with foam squares. Slight curling from the water is a win-win.

Get double duty from stencils you cut yourself by using them first as masks to ink around, then later, as actual embellishments on the layout.

ONE • In PhotoShop Elements, I applied a flower mask over my photo, then printed the photo and cut it out to use as the center of my layout. TWO • I cut several flower and leaf shapes with my Silhouette. I used the shapes as masks on the layout, applying ink on and around them. THREE • Next, I used those flower and leaf masks on the page as embellishments. FOUR • As a final touch, I stitched over the white masked lines of the inked leaves.

Why stop at one color of mist when using a stencil? The more the merrier! Apply from light to dark and create a unique look as the background for a layout.
ONE • Place a stencil of a subway on the sheet of cardstock. TWO • Choose four different mist colors, and spray-mist the entire stencil, starting with the lightest color. THREE • Clean the stencil with a paper towel and let the cardstock dry. FOUR • Replace the stencil in the exact position as before. FIVE • Mist part of the stencil with the second color. Repeat the cleaning and drying steps. SIX • Follow the same procedures for the third and fourth colors, ending with the darkest color.

Emphasize the design of your layout with a few stencil accents. Choose a stencil design that has the same feel, and add a sense of movement to your page.

ONE • The first step is positioning the stencil where you would like it. TWO • I chose chevrons for this layout, and placed them around the edges of the patterned paper to show movement. Since this layout was a bit busy with multiple patterned papers, I chose a simple design to complement the rest of the layout. THREE • Hold the stencil in place. With a flat-edged knife, apply texture paste. FOUR • Remove the stencil and allow the texture paste to dry.

Match designs on your patterned paper by using a series of layering stencils and coordinating inks. Blending in a circular motion helps keep the intensity uniform.
ONE • First place the layering stencil on the background, 4” from top and 1” from the left edge. TWO • Apply distress ink over the stencil, using a mini ink blending tool and foam. This allows control of the amount of ink applied. Blend ink colors to replicate colors in the floral design of the paper. THREE • Remove the stencil to reveal the design, and place onto the next area. Repeat on the right side. Clean stencil. FOUR • Repeat process with a different style layering stencil, inking over already inked areas as well as along background edges. FIVE • TIP: Control the depth of color by the pressure applied to the blending tool and the amount of ink on the tool. Blend in a circular motion to ensure even application.

Paint pairs up well with stencils, too. Use a dauber to apply the paint, and experiment with different paper textures for a variety of looks.
ONE • I placed a dotted stencil on the Xyron Creative Station, using 9-inch repositionable adhesive. This adhesive makes the stencil sticky, but it will later pull clean from the layout, leaving no residue. The advantage to using the adhesive is that is keeps the stencil from moving when you are using it. TWO • I used the dots stencil on various places around the layout. THREE • I used tan paint and a foam dauber to apply the paint, getting a different effect in the corrugated area.

Maintaining a minimal stash and stencils just aren’t on the list? Use stenciling techniques to create your own patterned paper, with supplies you probably already have on hand.

ONE • I punched out several butterfly shapes using a favorite punch. TWO • I placed the shapes on top of white paper and painted over them with watercolor. The places where they had been left a white area. The paint ran under it in some places, but I like the dreamy, imperfect quality. THREE • Repeat this several times with different colors that match your photo. FOUR • The best part was that I was able to use the painted butterflies as embellishments on the page, too.

I chose to use the left side of the sketch to create a one-page layout. Instead of using two 4 x 6 photos, I used one photo as an enlargement and then adjusted the background piece to fit the smaller width of the photo area. I like taking a fun and eyecatching photo and enlarging it to really make it stand out on the page.
I added in a few extra background strips. Since I had a smaller background piece behind the photo I took the opportunity to add in the strips. This was a great way to add more colors and patterns to the page. I also extended the strips to the top and bottom edges of the layout.
Because of the size of the presents and the added one inch of height on the main photo, I eliminated two 2 x 2 photos and instead had one 2 x 2 photo above the presents.

I had an extra 4 x 6 photo that I wanted to include so I extended the design on the left page to include an extra photo. To do that I removed the strips in between the two larger background pieces and moved the background with the 4 x 6 photos to the right edge of the left page and then continued it on the left edge of the right page.
Since I removed the middle strips I added them to the left edge on the large background. This was to remove a large white space on the left and help to balance out the layout.

When I added an extra 4 x 6 photo, I had to take away from the photo block on the right page of the sketch. I simply made the background smaller in width and only used four of the 3 x 4 elements on the background instead of the six 3 x 4 elements on the sketch.
I took the title, the 2 x 2 photos, and the embellishments across the bottom of the 4 x 6 photos and merged them all together. I loved the We R Memory Keepers cork circles and thought they would be perfect to use as the embellishments and the title together. I didn’t have enough to cover the whole area across the bottom so I moved the 2 x 2 photos to fill in that space.

The biggest change I made to the layout was with the right page. I took the idea of the photo block made up of 3 x 4 elements mixed with some small accents and switched up the size. I covered the whole page with 4 x 4 and 2 x 2 elements mixed with lots of small accents. I used a mix of 4 x 4 photos, 4 x 4 squares, 4 x 4 photo frames, 2 x 2 squares, and 2 x 2 photos and even a 4 x 2 photo. Since this covered the whole page, I had no need for the background. This was a fun way to include a lot more photos!
On the left page I centered the design in the middle of the page and eliminated all of the vertical strips. I also added a second, larger background piece.

I love including really large photos when I can. Highlight a favorite photo, make a sketch work for you when you have less photos, and mix up the look of a sketch. In this case I used one 8 x 6 photo in place of the two 4 x 6 photos. Since the photo is the same as the two on the sketch combined, I didn’t have to adjust anything else for the photo to fit.
I used strips of paper in place of the stars on the sketch. I loved the arrow strips and thought they would be great for that spot. Plus it helped to simplify that area!
I moved the 2 x 2 photos and the title up slightly so they are overlapped onto the large photo and the arrow strips.

With this layout I ended up taking both sides of the sketch and breaking them apart and centering them on each page.
On the left page I wanted to include another 4 x 6 photo so I moved the two 4 x 6 photos up and included another 4 x 6 photo and a 4 x 6 block directly below them. This eliminated the need for the background so I removed that. I did keep the vertical strips and mixed up the sizes a little.

In the process of including the extra pieces on the left page I ended up eliminating the space for the star embellishments under the 4 x 6 photo. I decided to go ahead and include them, overlapped onto the middle of the photos.
The 3 x 4 elements on the page pretty much follow the sketch exactly. The only change I made was including my title in the block of elements. To do that I used a larger background so I would have space below the 3 x 4 photos and journaling card to include a title.
I added another, larger background piece to the right page. I wanted to use the same dotted paper that I used on the left page to help tie the two pages together.

The biggest change I made to this layout was extending the background papers all the way to the right and left edges of the photos. Sometime I get ideas for changing up a sketch when I see certain papers or embellishments. In this case, I loved the large “documented memories� journaling space and used it as the idea for extending the backgrounds to the edges.
On the left page I flipped the photos and the embellishments. I used two 6 x 4 photos and then used a row of hearts in place of the stars. The title was moved slightly to accommodate the change in photos and I removed the 2 x 2 photos.

I used one large piece for the background on the left page and added a few vertical strips to it. The photos may have flipped but the background roughly stayed the same with the exception of size.
On the right page I used the large journaling block on the patterned paper and added photos along the bottom to create a photo block similar to the photo block on the right side of the sketch.
I used two 2 x 2 photos in place of the one 2 x 2 photo on the upper right corner of the right page. The journaling block on the patterned paper was huge so I had room for an extra photo.

Truth be told, I have wasted many hours (and destroyed many an innocent sheet of paper) moving pieces of paper around on a page trying to come up with an interesting design. That’s why I’m so sold on sketches. For me, they are the ultimate time saver. I know that if I like the sketch, I’m going to like the end result. For example, take this design. I see so many possibilities using the stars. Fourth of July. Christmas. A celebration. An award. Then I look at it again and see hearts instead of stars. Or flowers. Or circles. More possibilities. I enjoy spending my time on the fun questions. What patterned paper looks best in this spot? What stickers should I use for the title? What small embellishments work best right here? These are questions I love to answer!

The grid design was different than my usual more layered style, but I love how many details I was able to include; plus it gave me the perfect chance to break into the gold glitter stars I got as a gift from an online scrappy friend! These colors were perfect for any sea/shore/maritime project, and I picked one of my daughter with her (then) fiance, now new husband on their Greek vacation. I used themed products, but was short of themed embellishments, so I made my own sea shells with polymer clay, push molds and pigments. Then I added a photo frame made of thick hemp. I also cut the tags’ packaging and used small tags from it as small embellishments and altered the clothespin with paper cuts.”

I was a little nervous about this color challenge because I never have good July 4th photos, well, not good enough to publish in a magazine. However, since we moved to St. Louis I do have a ton of St. Louis Cardinals baseball game photos. And what is the all American sport? Baseball! I have a bent for music and have long loved it. I have many songs memorized, from all throughout my life. ‘100 Years’ by Five for Fighting is such a rich song -- meaningful lyrics and strong composition -- and it immediately went onto my ‘faves list.’ I remember hearing this song for the first time and thinking, ‘Oh my word! They are right!’ Well, a decade has more than passed since it released, showing how quickly time does fly. I love layouts that compare and contrast time. I had quite the adventure looking for photos of me, the photographer, across the years. I loved that I found one that was me, me the bride, me the mom, and me the scrapbooker. This challenge may have been the most difficult one to date for me. I recently had to put my little 10year-old Yorkie down and even though this wasn’t a required assignment for me I knew I had to take this one on. Scrapbooking can be so therapeutic and heart wrenching when you decide to scrapbook photos that are meaningful and pull at your heartstrings all at once. The song ‘How Can You Mend A Broken Heart’ is all I kept thinking when I read this challenge for the first time. We miss our little Bella-Blue, but I’m so thankful that I have many, many layouts about our 10 years together.”

At first, I thought this was going to be pretty easy. Many times I have used song titles or partial lyrics in my scrapbooking, but usually just as a title. When it came down to it, I had a difficult time finding lyrics that actually spoke to me for the journaling. Eventually I came upon these from ‘Best Day Of My Life’ by American Authors. I used a small excerpt that captured my feelings about running and how fortunate I feel to be able to do so. Incidentally, the title of the song also became the title of my page. In the end, I loved being able to combine a favorite song with two of my favorite pastimes: running and scrapbooking.”

“Summer is one of my favorite subjects to scrap so I loved this assignment. This layout had actually been sitting in a pile of half-completed pages for nearly a year. These photos make me so happy, but for whatever reason, I couldn't figure out how to finish the page. I had paper and photos down only; no title or embellishments. Fortunately, this assignment was just the motivation I needed to get it done. I love the bright yellow-orange paper which, for me, always screams summer. I also had a little fun playing with the anchor accents for that beachy/oceanside feel.�

Meet Amy Cunniff, a 36-year-old tutor and full-time mom in Duanesburg, New York. She has agreed to give us an inside look at how scrapbooking impacts her life.
How and when did you get started scrapbooking? I started scrapbooking in 1995 when I was 16 and my husband and I started dating. I scrapped everything! I had been invited to a Creative Memories party and that was it –- I never looked back. I couldn’t wait to have wedding and baby pictures to scrapbook. We got married in 1999, and our first son was born in 2007. Then I scrapbooked with a vengeance. Shortly after our second son, Zachary was born in 2008, we noticed Caleb was having some major medical problems. After six months of scary doctor appointments and tests, he was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. He would never walk, and as he grew, he would get weaker. I was devastated. Up until then, I would spend hours pouring over scrapbooking idea books, magazines, etc., but now couldn’t bring myself to look at them. I would never have the sports pages, or even typical kid pages. Our life became an endless stream of therapy and doctor appointments.
Time spent scrapbooking? I used to be able to spend three-four hours week on scrapbooking. We recently moved and life has gotten in the way, and I’m going through withdrawal! I hope to get back to four hours every week by the end of the summer.

I began to feel guilty that I had scrapbooks full of Caleb and none of my younger son. I committed to scrapping Zach’s first year and then I would pack up my supplies. But then, something happened. I truly believe God used scrapbooking to start healing my heart. As I would scrap pictures I couldn’t help but notice that my boys were smiling. In spite of SMA, my boys were living a great life! Instead of focusing on what we couldn’t do, I began using each layout as a way to count my blessings. Since Caleb’s diagnosis in 2009, I have filled five-six scrapbooks a year! Tragedy struck my family again in 2013, when my husband, Dave was killed in the line of duty as a New York State Trooper. Once again, I turned to scrapbooking for therapy. I also felt I had a new mission. My boys were five and six when their daddy died, and I needed to record just what an awesome father they had. I know they will forget many things, so I want to make sure that one day they can look back through the scrapbooks and hopefully remember Daddy.
What is your scrap space like? I have two general areas where I scrap. I dedicated a large closet in my basement to house my crafting supplies. I have a nook next to the closet where I keep a table up and this is my dedicated craft space. I also keep a small table in my bedroom, with a basket of supplies. That way if my boys are asleep and I don’t want to be in the basement, I can easily scrap.
What are your best organizational tips? Organization is one of those things that I find is never complete. I think as my style and interests change, the way I want my supplies stored changes as well. I have purged supplies that I was not using or just no longer loved. I didn't have regrets after selling most of it and now shop and store things based on how I personally use supplies and plan projects.
How do you describe your style? Over the years my style has morphed into a more linear, clean style. I tend to think less is more. I also really love using striped or polka dot paper to incorporate lots of color.
Do you have a set budget for scrapbooking? I do not have a monthly budget. When my husband was alive, he really indulged me when it came to my scrapbooking -– it was

Social aspect? I go to a scrapbooking retreat twice a year, every April and November. I also feel blessed to able to teach a class there. I prep throughout the year which helps me get the most out of every minute I’m there. I will match photos to kits (my SG kits!), prep them and stack them up in a paper keeper. When I get to the retreat the prep work is already done and I power through. I can get 40-50 layouts done in the two days! It’s a great feeling! Also that way I don’t have to pack up and tote all my supplies.

therapy for me. On days when life seemed hard and trying, he would tell me to “go scrap it out!” Like most scrapbookers, I tend to buy more than I can possibly use. I go through periods where I think, “I’m going to use this up before I buy anything else.” And then when the new Echo Park or Simple Stories collections come out, I’m buying them!
Where do you get your inspiration? I find inspiration everywhere! Sometimes I get inspiration from my photos, or the colors in the photos. Other times I might see a cool embellishment I want to use and design my page around that. Other times, a quote might inspire a layout.
Advice for finding more time to scrapbook? The best advice I have for carving out time is to have your supplies accessible. I keep my basic supplies handy and a couple packs of
paper in my bedroom closet. When the mood strikes or I have free time, I’m ready to go.
What does this hobby mean to your life? Because of the trials in my life, scrapbooking has been a way to count my blessings. Even in the darkest times, there is always something to be thankful for and those are the moments I want to remember.

What are your thoughts on scrapbooking? Many times I have been very grateful that I am a scrapbook/papercrafting addict. As a result, I’ve chronicled my family’s life and that is so precious. I love that I have captured the little moments that I would have otherwise forgotten.
