a letter from the editor

This time last year, CREATE magazine was just one of my never-ending crazy ideas on how to better market our family business, Scrapbook Generation, and its expansion into the land of online stores with scrapbookgeneration.com. Now, after 11 issues, it’s something totally different. CREATE has reached a larger audience than I ever dreamed it would, read literally worldwide...with the exception of Greenland, Nicaragua, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Madagascar, and 17 countries in central Africa. Out of 196 countries, that’s not too shabby! Readership is fantastic, too, with as many as 259,000 people reading and downloading each issue. I know that people miss their print scrapbooking magazines. I do, too. But in this time of technology transition for so many familiar things in our lives, I hope that -- for some of you at least -- we do a decent job of filling the vacuum created by the loss of those beloved print magazines. As 2014 progressed, it only took me a couple of issues to realize that time was not going to be my friend. In addition to this magazine, I’m the buyer for both our stores, I design kit clubs, and take care of our social media, for starters. So with all the things I was already responsible for, I COULD keep up with the assignments and page design and all the other things that go into editing a digital publication, but just barely. Something had to give. So, CREATE will skip the month of December, and then in 2015, start on an every-other month schedule. To mesh with this change, a few months ago we put out a call for a new design team, and we selected 36 scrapbookers, including 10 internationals. In 2015, this team will play an expanded role in CREATE. You’ll soon see how they

skillfully approach eight challenges each issue, including color, product, theme, journaling, and layout and card and tag sketches. For now, we asked each of the new team members to send a layout that best represents her style. You’ll find that the entire spectrum is well-represented! Enjoy samples of their work as we introduce the new team. Savor the holiday season, then check back in January. We’ll be ready with nearly 300 pages of papercrafting inspiration!

Thread is thread. Unless it’s Memory Thread. This twisty, twirly product is reminiscent of The American Breed lyrics “bend me, shape me, anyway you want me.” On the outside, it looks like thread...on the inside, wire that holds its shape for all kinds of crafting projects.

Create a quick and easy banner by tying a bow at one end, then thread through or adhere banner shapes. Tie the other end and adhere to paper. Finish by adding some extra embellishments, like buttons.

Brown Memory Thread is perfect for creating the “stick arms on a snowman. I used one longer piece for the main arm and then wrapped a smaller piece around the top to complete it.

change

I used the right side of the two-page sketch for a one-page layout. I love doing this with two-page sketches. Most of the time you can use either side, so a two-page sketch is really like having three sketches in one! I added a large background. Since most of the patterned paper is used on the left page, I wanted to add a little to the right page. Adding a simple background can liven up a page.

2

change

CREATE 26

3

change

I used large Christmas trees instead of large flourishes. Even though they aren't the same shape as the flourishes or even in the same placement as on the sketch, they are in the same general area. Whenever I alter a sketch I try not to worry too much about elements being perfectly matched to the sketch. Usually as long as they are in the general area, the design will work well.

I used less photos than the sketch suggests. Using more photos would have nearly covered the Christmas trees, so I opted to use fewer and only at the bottom of the trees, since the trees are a focal point.

5

I took that 3x5 photo on the sketch, replaced it with a 4x6 photo and moved it over. I wanted it to be grouped together with the trees and smaller photos to keep all of the important elements of the layout together.

I had a ton of photos I wanted to include on this layout so I stretched the photo block all the way to the top and bottom of the layout. This is always an easy adjustment to make to a photo block to increase the amount of photos, usually without the need to alter too much of the design.

Since I stretched the photos to the top and bottom of the layout, I eliminated the horizontal strips on the layout. To make up for this I added a striped strip to both sides of the photo block and a chipboard city scape to the left edge.

3

change

In place of the flourishes, I decided to play around with the theme of my layout and include a bunch of arrows instead. This was a great way for me to include more patterned paper since I eliminated a lot of it by stretching the photo block. The arrows still fit in the same general area as the flourishes did.

I used less photos on the right page. I loved the splash design and didn't want to cover too much of it. Since I had a larger title, I went with less photos so more of the splash design would show through.

3

change

Since I used less photos on the right page, I added more on the left so I could include all the photos I wanted to use. There are always ways to tweak a sketch to make it fit what you want to do! I simply used two 3 x 2-1/2 photos in place of the 3 x 5 photos. Splitting a single photo into two smaller photos is always an easy solution to add more photos to a sketch.

time

it’s about

by debbie sanders

The way I figure it, there are two types of scrapbookers: those who have all the time in the world, and those who don’t. It’s not typically a life sentence. There will be periods when you can’t keep up with all the demands on your life. But there will also be times when you have leisure hours to fill.

................

................

THE 30-MINUTE LAYOUT For me, one of the easiest ways to save valuable time scrapbooking is to narrow down decisions about supplies. First, use a sketch with measurements. I used the one-page sketch I designed for this issue. Second, use papers and embellishments primarily from one collection (like Modern Miss by BoBunny, above).

40 CREATE

Once you’ve selected papers and adhered them to the page, it’s just a matter of choosing a few matching embellishments and attaching them. It just doesn’t get any easier!

..................

THE 3-HOUR LAYOUT Identical papers, identical photos, but a huge difference in time management! I personalized this layout by hand-stitching. I die-cut a journaling tag and banners and heart, and spent time selecting coordinating embellishments and letter styles and colors for the title. I also added a bit a sparkle to chipboard buttons from the BoBunny group by adding Diamond Glaze and a sprinkling of chunky glitter. If you have the time, it’s so much fun to “do it yourself.”

LONG TITLE T I T LE

DEBBIE’S TIP #1 Three main colors (red, blue and yellow) stood out to me in the BoBunny papers, so I wanted to include all three of those colors in the title. I’m loving the tiny word strip stickers right now not just for what they say, but for the ability they give me to easily (and economically) add a touch of an accent color to a collage title.

4 X 6 PHOTO

DEBBIE’S TIP #2 It’s such a small thing -- a tiny diecut heart -- but I thought it added just the right touch to my title. There are many times that simple shapes (hearts, stars, flowers, etc.) can be added to a title collage to emphasize the theme of the layout, and add a touch of cuteness. Basic dies in those shapes get lots of use when I create pages!

DEBBIE’S TIP #3 As always, I really think about the best use of patterned papers. The viewfinder paper is adorable and I definitely wanted to use it. I ruled out four of the 3x4 spots because they would have other elements like embellishments or letters or banners layered on them. I didn’t want to lose the effect of the paper OR the embellishments, so I made sure to use them in spots where they each could stand out.

Where did the name BoBunny come from?

“When my sons were young, I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. But our budget was so tight. To solve this I collected antique linens and lace and began making bunny dolls. I sold them to stores. I also received special orders. People would tell me about the person they were buying the bunny for. With that information I named each bunny and wrote a poem about their loved one. BoBunny became part of the poem. For instance, if the bunny was for Kristy, I would write “Kristy Bo-Bunny.” So when I began this business, and began hand-drawing papers, the name just felt right. Each paper was personal to me, just like the bunny dolls. And so we have BoBunny Press.”

Were you always into art?

“Yes. But I changed my college major from art to English because I didn’t see how I could ever make a living with art. The lesson here is stick with what you love to do.”

What is your favorite collection?

“Oh, no. In our beginning days I designed all the collections myself. I named them after my grandchildren. We had a Michael collection, Rachel collection, and an Alissa collection. I am really behind now. We have three more grandchildren and one more on the way. But favorites from the last few years? Mamarazzi 1 and 2, Enchanted Garden, Somewhere in Time, The Avenues, Madeleine, Elf Magic...I could go on and on.”

Does your family play a part in the operation of the BoBunny business? “Oh, my goodness yes! To start my company, my husband did extra work and my sister loaned me $500. The printing company required cash up front. My oldest son set up my accounting program. My second son designed papers. My youngest son set up our UPS and Visa account. He also designed our first website and was my total IT support for years. Currently my husband is my CFO and my second son, Matthew, manages much of the company. He works with sales, marketing and new product development.”

Who are the kay players in the BoBunny Press company, and what roles do they play with the organization? “Key players? Vicki has been with me 16 years. She is our office manager. Corey has been with me for 16 years as well in accounts receivable, sales and customer service. These two ladies have been there with me from the very start. As to key players, I consider everyone at BoBunny a key player. We all work as a team and get our jobs done.”

Where are the BoBunny business facilities located? “We are located in Layton, Utah.”

How did BoBunny start?

“It was my sister’s idea. A friend told her that there were scrapbook papers she couldn’t find. My sister decided I could do them. So my dusty paint box came off the shelf and I began hand-painting papers. That was 17 years ago. Just as Creating Keepsakes published its first edition, we printed our first two papers. Two papers became four. Four papers became 16 and so it continued to grow.”

How does the design process work?

“We have four full-time graphic designers. As a group, we take a few days to brainstorm, search for trends, and then pull together design concepts. Each designer prints an inspiration page for new collections. This has their color palette, icons or images they love and two-four paper designs. It is a fun way to look at new collections and the team work is wonderful.”

What inspired you to take BoBunny into other crafts realms, such as mixed media?

“Mixed media is just another way to make things more beautiful. Glitter pastes, sprays, stencils just make more Bo-Bunny yumminess.”

What is your favorite thing about your job?

“Creativity. I was not blessed with the talent to be organized. But creativity is my passion. Everywhere I go I see opportunities to create.”

When you first started, how did you design papers? “In the beginning I hand drew each paper design.”

with Jan Lanoy, owner

What is the key element to BoBunny’s success?

“Great product and great people. I have wonderful people working at BoBunny. They are a key part of our success. The second thing that is important is we never try to look like another company. We are BoBunny. We always want to look like BoBunny. That keeps our company strong.”

Where does your inspiration come from?

“Everywhere I look I see something that is beautiful or something old that could be beautiful. Life and the world around me is my inspiration.”

Did you ever dream you would have your own business?

“Never. When I started I didn’t even know what an invoice was. But in a way it is a dream come true. I always longed to design beautiful things to share with people. I just didn’t imagine sharing with people all around the world.”

“The large swirl designs on the sketch were a perfect fit with the jewel and sticker flourishes from BoBunny. The layered flourishes served to connect and ground my small photo clusters and long title accent piece. small size, big

impact by lindsey amschler

There’s no better subject for a mini-album than a the joy of a holiday celebration. Combine Christmas with family, and you have a match made in heaven! Why not make a mini about a favorite holiday, and the family members you share it with.

a blank album becomes a work of art with the right touches ................

lindsey’s simple process 100 CREATE

Creating a mini-album from paper bags is both easy and fun. Bags make a great starting base, allowing for lots of pockets to hold extra photos and ephemera. Create the album by stacking three paper bags together. Stitch a line up the center to create a sturdy binding. Fold the bags in half to create the album, the punch holes along the binding edge and lace up with ribbon. • Cover pages with patterned paper and photos. • Decorate with embellishments like flowers, bows, and chipboard accents. • Add journaling and small details such as jewels and glitter. • Finish the album by adding additional photos and ephemera to the pages where there is an opening in the bags, or simply adhere them closed.

“I have a love/hate relationship with Christmas layouts. Because of the memories connected to the photos, I really strive for that perfect page, and usually I'm disappointed in the results. For this layout I decided to keep it super simple. I found a great Scrapbook Generation sketch that worked well with the photos, then I pulled the few ‘gold’ things that I had in my stash, and went to work. I ended up with a layout that I actually like. I think I found my new strategy for working with Christmas photos -- just keep it simple.”

“I had a lot of photos from my sister's extremely picturesque birthday party and this sketch fits lots of them. The other thing the sketch is awesome for is highlighting a theme. Although it shows Christmas trees, the large space could hold any shapes, so I replicated the square rigged sails from the ship using gold striped paper. I used a children's colouring page (found via Google) and then sketched those shapes and hand cut them. I love that they are imperfect. They create the effect of movement and set the theme of that evening. I love the sense of fun that a big embellishment can bring, and with a double-page layout you have enough room without sacrificing space for photos.

“Love this sketch! It accommodates several photos and can easily be adapted to use more. I added an additional vertical row of photos to the left page. I knew the corn stalk embellishment wouldn't require as much space as the gathering of trees in the sketch, so it was just a matter of enlarging the background panel to fit under more photos. I decided to use the journaling space for my title. Instead of the long row of vertical banners, I cut some fall labels (for journaling) instead. Note: I had another photo I wanted to include, but I had run out of real estate and, more importantly, the colors in this photo did not fit in. Solution? Hide it. When you pull out the tab on the right page behind the photo block, you can see the additional photo. Included...but hidden!

“Every year I scrapbook our Christmas card, and we had two last year (because I ran out at the last minute)! Because the cards were totally different looking they didn’t look good side by side so I made a flap, one card on the cover and the second one inside the flap. I love how it turned out! It’s so fun to go back see how we’ve all changed throughout the years.” -- Nikki Sivils

• Home decor: I love making my own Christmas decorations! When I saw this month’s tag sketch, I saw so many possibilities. I decided on covering this home decor piece and by using the tag sketch, it was a quick and easy project. I loved the look of the diagonal strips and changed the stars to layered doilies and embellishments.
