Explosion isn’t a word I use lightly. But I’m hard pressed to find anything else that would describe the way that “something old that has become new” has taken over my life. About the time the July issue of CREATE was released, the rep for the distributor where we order many supplies for Scrapbook Generation contacted me with the message that they were going to add adult coloring books to their products. She suggested strongly that I give them a try. “They’re going to be hot” were her exact words. To say she was right is an understatement. Within days, I started to see articles everywhere about how coloring for adults was literally sweeping the nation. We mentioned our first shipment on Facebook, and before the first books had even arrived, there was so much interest that I placed more orders. Here’s what has taken place in two months. • We’ve gone from offering about 20 coloring books to selling over 120 titles at both scrapbookgeneration.com and the Springfield store. About 50 more selections are on the way! • People have been buying the books for not just coloring at home, but for the airport, hospital, beach, even movie theater. • And they keep coming back for more. If ever a “new” product meshed with scrapbooking and cardmaking, this is it. Most of us already have markers and colored pencils. We just need the books! Personally, I’m on a mission to test out most of them myself! Grown-up coloring books have become my latest addiction. Not in such a way that coloring is replacing scrapbooking or other hobbies. But in a way that I believe is good for me physically and mentally. Coloring is helping me unplug for part of my day. Before coloring arrived in my life, I typically worked at the computer all day, then came home and sat around -- with the TV on

as electronic wallpaper -- with a computer or iPad on my lap. Wasted time, really. Now, instead of something electronic, I grab a coloring book, my Spectrum Noir markers, and settle down in a comfy chair. They say coloring is relaxing. It is. They say it is therapeutic. It is. What I love? Looking through the beautiful drawings in the books. Choosing a color palette from my markers. Touching pen to paper. Watching the black and white drawing explode with color. Focusing on making something pretty. Clearing my head. Soothing my soul. Having fun.

CARD: Cut haunted house with diecutting machine. Adhere to card. Die cut a tree line, color, adhere to card. Stamp small stars onto background. Stamp sentiment onto card. Stamp, color and die cut ghosts and adhere to card. Die cut star; adhere to card. Adhere enamel dots and sequins. MINI CLIPBOARD: Create mini clipboards by covering a piece of chipboard with patterned paper and embellishments like stamped images, die-cuts, sequins and enamel dots. Simply add a hinge clip at the top of the board to complete the look. Color the clip with alcohol inks to customize. Add ribbon and charms to the top. You can add a magnet to the back so that the clipboard could hang onto a refrigerator or lockers. GIFT BAG: Cut cardstock to fit the front of gift bag. Stamp and heat emboss across cardstock. Color over the cardstock with Zig Clean Color markers to create background color; adhere to gift bag. Stamp, color and die cut ghosts; adhere to bag front. Love the look of watercolor backgrounds but not sure how to create them? Stamp first with distress ink, then use a brush and a tiny amount of water for a colorful blend.

ONE • I used a big ampersand stamp with various colors of distress ink, stamping the design in a diagonal direction on the cardstock. TWO • Then I used a brush and a bit of water on the ink to create a watercolor effect. THREE • Next, I used a big speech bubble stamp and black ink to create a design behind my photo and paper layers. FOUR • Last, I used a few different stamps to help create my title. To do that, I used a small alpha stamp set and a bigger number stamp set.

Making your own unique embellishments with stamped images can turn a layout into a standout. Stamp, blend with liquid stain, and glam up with glitter glue for sparkle and shine.

ONE • Stamp the image (I used a pumpkin) on white cardstock. TWO • Place a tiny amount of liquid spray stain in a small container. (A little goes a long way.) Use as many colors as you wish, each in its own container. (I used bottle caps.). THREE • Wet a watercolor brush and dab in the liquid ink. Paint the stamped images using at least 2-3 colors on each, dipping the brush in water and blending as you go. Let dry. FOUR • Line images with glitter glue matching the stain. Let dry. FIVE • Cut out images. Layer with foam dots in different thicknesses for a dimensional look.

Emphasize the topic of your layout by stamping a word design as a graphic element. Use watercolor pencils and a blender pen to highlight one of the words.

ONE • Select a smooth background sheet. TWO • Ink the stamp and repeat the stamped image, varying the center of the stamp. THREE • Adhere patterned paper strips, photos and embellishments. FOUR • Use watercolor pencils to color in one of the words. FIVE • Use a blender pen on the watercolored areas.

Create a border or mat design to frame the patterned paper on a layout by stamping with a small stamp. Make a few pencil lines to guide the path, and you’re ready to start stamping.

ONE • I used a smaller stamp, about 2 inches round, to stamp a repeating pattern as a border or mat between the patterned papers and cardstock. TWO • I marked with a pencil under the corners of the papers to have an outline to follow for the stamp. THREE • I re-inked the stamp for each image, and slightly overlapped to create the border. I didn’t worry about perfection in stamping, wanting a handmade look. FOUR • After the border was complete, I adhered the papers.

Want to add some drama and interest to a layout? Stamp an image on the reverse side, cut out the image, and then back the open area with patterned paper.

ONE • I stamped the outline of a feather on the back of the white cardstock and then cut it out as one of the embellishments for my layout. TWO • I also added the patterned paper under the cut-out to make more layers of the background. THREE • I stamped both the outline and solid images of the feathers in two colors, which I’m obsessed with recently.

Get triple the impact by stamping the same image in a cluster. Light, medium and dark versions of the same image can be created by simply inking the stamp once.

ONE • I used two stamping techniques for my project: embossing resist and triple stamping. TWO • Stamp with a script stamp using Versamark ink. THREE • Emboss portions with clear embossing powder. FOUR • Ink over the top. Some areas will stay white (where embossed), other areas will be colored. FOUR • Ink a stamp, then stamp three times in a small area without re-inking. This will create a dark, medium, and light shade of the same image.

Make a one-of-a-kind floral embellishment by stamping on watercolor paper. Shade with watercolor crayons and then blend with a wet brush.

ONE • Attach the flower stamp to an acrylic block and dab well with archival ink. TWO • Place watercolor paper onto stamping foam before stamping the image onto the paper. THREE • Shade and color the image with watercolor crayons and blend with a wet brush. If the color is too bright, tone it down by applying a layer of gesso. FOUR • Fussy-cut around the image and then embellish the center of the flower with pearls. FIVE • Use as an embellishment on your layout.

Make your own stamp with magic foam, a little heat, and a metal die. Once the imprint of the die is made, stamp as you would with a ‘normal’ stamp.

ONE • Heat up a magic foam mold with a heat tool. TWO • Press a metal die into the warm foam to make an imprint. THREE • Ink, then stamp as normal on background paper. FOUR • For a second technique, use Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze as the “ink” on a rubber stamp. FIVE • Stamp on background paper with the same technique as stamping with regular inks.

Give stamps a real workout by using them to create a background, images to cut out for embellishments, and even words to use as the journaling for the layout.

ONE • Make a background by stamping with a mesh stamp and permanent ink Stamp on the corners to make a frame for the page. TWO • Make small embellishments with themed stamps. Stamp over white cardstock with pigment ink, then heat emboss with clear embossing powder. THREE • Color the stamped images with a mix of distress inks. Cut them out. FOUR • Stamp a few words in the same way, then cut them out and arrange the “journaling” in a random way.

Create your own die-cut embellishments by making use of the Silhouette PixScan mat. Create a border by stamping phrases and words across the page.

ONE • For background stamping, I chose large patterns like houndstooth, herringbone, notebook paper, dictionary words, chevron stripes, burlap. I stamped the burlap onto the cardstock base, going for tone on tone. I stamped the others on cardstock squares, using ink colors that coordinated with the patterned paper. TWO • For die-cut stamping, I chose themed stamps, and stamped with the same colors on white cardstock. I placed the cardstock with the stamped images on a Silhouette PixScan mat, photographed them, and imported them into the Silhouette software. I did a trace feature and had the machine cut out the shapes. THREE • For word stamping, I stamped two words and phrases across the top of the layout. The back of the layout can be used to test spacing.

Get creative with the negative space in a stamped image. Use bleach to create a pattern that compliments the design and theme of the layout.

ONE • Stamp a “hollow” image onto colored cardstock with Versamark ink. TWO • Sprinkle embossing powder on the image and emboss with a heat tool. THREE • Dip a small paint brush in bleach and “paint” the color out of the inside of the image. Choose to bleach out all color, do an ombre effect, a pattern, or even write a word. I used a zig-zag pattern. The embossing helps keep the bleach in check.

I flipped the sketch from left to right to accommodate the direction of my photo. I wanted the empty space in the photo to be facing towards the middle of the page so I could overlap my journaling strips and smaller photos in that area without running them off the page.

I changed up the size of the photos by using a 4x6 photo in place of the two 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 photos on the sketch. Because the sketch has so much empty, white space above the photos I really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to make any adjustment to include a large photo. I also added a few smaller, 2x2 photos to my layout.

I added a few more strips to the background. Since I was using a photo with more height, it allowed for more strips in that space. I also used a variety of sizes of strips that differ from the sketch. I loved the idea of using the rulers for the strips and cut them according to their size on the patterned paper piece I got them from.

CHANGE #4 I added a really large background. I thought the cork paper would be a fun paper to add to my school themed layout but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want it to be the only background. I was afraid that the pictures and patterned papers would get lost on it so I added the large cream-colored background.

CHANGE #1 I created a photo block on the right page to make this a twopage layout. I kept the design of the sketch on the left page and then created my own photo block design on the right page. This is always an easy way to convert a one-page sketch into a two-page layout. The possibilities are endless for the right page! I used a combination of cards and elements from Simple Stories with my photos and covered the whole right page.

On the left page I took the sketch design and flipped it from a horizontal design to a vertical design. I still used the same general design and the photos are the same size. I flipped it to accommodate my horizontal photos.

I added more strips to the background. I loved the bright colors in this collection from Simple Stories and thought they would be a fun compliment to the darker browns in my photos so I wanted to add as much color as I could. Adding those strips was an easy way to accomplish that!

I stretched the design of the sketch to create a two-page sketch from the one-page layout. This is another great way to extend a one-page sketch into a two-page layout! I repeated the photos across the page and kept the design generally the same.

I used larger photos than suggested on the sketch. I liked the idea of smaller photos on a one-page layout, but felt that they needed to be a little larger on a two-page sketch. There is so much white space on the sketch that using larger photos was an easy plan without having to make any major adjustments to the sketch.

I copied the same strips design on the left page and repeated it on the upper right side of the layout. There was so much space available that I thought this would be a great way to add in some more patterns and colors.

I added a few smaller supporting photos. As with the other layouts, there is so much extra available space that there was plenty of room for adding in some extra photos. I love using 2x2 photos for those small, closer up, detailed photos!

I always think it’s fate when a paper collection so perfectly matches a special event. My daughter Stacey’s 40th birthday party had black and gold decorations, was held in a more-or-less black room, and most of us were wearing black. Along comes a black and gold party-themed collection by KaiserCraft, and it was love at first sight! This sketch was perfect to combine two separate aspects of the party -- our silly ‘photo booth’ pictures, and the birthday girl and her party decorations.”

I loved working with this sketch. Although I am not a scrapper that uses loads of photos on a layout, this one worked really well. I kept to most of the original sketch, but changed out the flags for a large embossed letter, changed the sewing a bit and added some circle elements. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like overlapping photos onto each other so kept mine simple and grouped close together but not overlapping. This is a lovely and versatile sketch.â&#x20AC;?

I love the way SG sketches always include lots of options for photos and product without feeling crowded. I was feeling like a bit of watercolouring so I swapped out the patterned papers for squares of different coloured paint. I used a punch to create a square template and then drew around it with a waterproof pen (Copic multiliner). I purposely made the squares a little bit haphazard as I like the casual feeling that gives the story. I also had only three portrait photos of our canoeing so I changed the sketch to be one page and cut the photos down to 4x4 to fit them across the top third of the page. I love the result, with the bits of story mixed in with my squares down the bottom and lots and lots of colour.”

I always really love the double-layout sketches, and this issue was no exception. Right away, I thought about flipping the sketch and putting the pictures at the bottom, and I knew I wanted to remember one of the boys’ recent birthdays. Since my other layout was about Andrew, I of course needed to document Philip on this one. It was a bit of a challenge to carry off the birthday theme for a 21-year-old man, but he is still my little boy, and I went with the bright colors that I pulled out of the photos. Because I went with vertical photos, I had to reduce the size of the paper squares at the top, and I chose to just center them across the width of the page. I liked the simple vellum star punch to tone down some of the paper, and to evoke a little celebratory mood. Because the papers were so vibrant, I kept the embellishments to a minimum, and went for a simple black title to help ground all of the color. I really love how it turned out. Simple, full of color, and happy, just like our celebration of his big day, and just like his style, too.”

I loved using this sketch for our mini vacation. I had taken so many pictures of that day at the dino park, that doing a multi-picture double layout was perfect to get them all in. “As a single page scrapper, I used just one side of the sketch to make my layout. This half sketch is just perfect for scrapping five different photos from the same ‘photo frame’ session. I used two large photos and trimmed three smaller to fit the sketch that I loved a lot. The only embellishments added were a whole package of 3D stickers that made the title and all things around the page. One small pearls swirl was added on the corner. I made my granddaughter’s name with candle stickers: Neta and added hand written journaling over the patterned paper.”

FRAMED HOLIDAY DECOR â&#x20AC;&#x153;As soon as I saw the card sketch it reminded me of something that would work well for Halloween decor. It would work well with a moon shape or a frame like I chose to go with for this particular project. Die-cut packs were the perfect go-to for a quick and relatively easy home decor piece. "Living in Israel makes a real fall to be something you can see only out of the country. We actually have only summer and then a very hot summer. I knew that I wanted to include a lot of photos so I played around with size and placement until I found something I liked, then worked around that. This collection from Bella Blvd fit the mood I wanted to convey...spooky but cute. I absolutely had to leave room for this cute mummy that I knew I had in my Silhouette library. I also found these zombie arms which helped to complete the theme. I think my favorite part is the how the title letters came out. For me, they just ooze Halloween.â&#x20AC;?

“I began with selecting a photo of my daughter’s first day of Pre-K. I used the colors in the photo to create a non-traditional back-toschool layout. I used gelatos and ink sprays to create different color patches on the white cardstock. I also hand-drew the alphabet on different patterned papers and fussy cut them out. I placed them around the page in a spiral motion and then stitched them down. I then used a few stickers, die-cuts and flair buttons that made me think of school around the photo.”

“These photos were taken last May, when my daughter attended high school in the United States. Because she was a foreign exchange student she wasn’t allowed to join in the official graduation ceremony, although she had nothing but straight A’s for the entire year. Lucky for her she was allowed to buy the cap and gown to take home with her so she can wear them at the end of this school year, when she graduates here in The Netherlands. Last year, we shared overthe-top cute birthday party decorations by Tasha Key with CREATE readers. Now, birthday boy Riley just turned three, and Tasha is back with the farm-themed decor she created for her sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special day.

Riley turns three...farm style!

A spring birthday party for three-year-old Riley Key was the focus for months of papercrafting preparation by his mother, Tasha Key. We asked Tasha to share her ideas, methods, and the results of that special day with CREATE readers.

Q: Why did you choose a farm theme? Riley has loved tractors for a good long time now. He lights up when he spots one, so it seemed like the perfect theme.

Q: When did you start papercrafting?

Four months before the party I started making everything. It was plenty of time. Originally there wasn't a patterned paper that matched the colors and if I was hand stamping everything, it wouldn't have been enough time if I had to do that with everything. Doodlebug really helped my time line, and I could focus on food.

Q: Where did you get ideas for the items and how difficult were the preparations?

A few things were found on various party planning blogs, like the nameplates for different items. Those were also the easiest to make thanks to the print and cut feature on my Silhouette. The banner and treat boxes were my design and definitely the hardest parts of the process. The treat boxes weren't really hard, just time consuming thanks to all the die-cutting. The banner was definitely the winner for hardest project. It wasn't that it was a hard project but I had another design originally and when it was almost complete I decided that it just wasn't working. Once I came up with the tractor tire for a base it fell into place. Having to do it twice cost me lots of time, but it came together in the end.

Q: Did the decorations turn out the way you envisioned?

They did! All of the bright John Deere colors really looked great and it was the perfect backdrop for my tractor loving little guyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s big day.

Q: Where was the party held?

The party was held at a local park. We rented a party room they have right next to a lake. Two walls were basically big windows and one side looked out at the lake. It was a really beautiful setting. Thankfully no children ended up in the lake!

Q: How did the birthday boy react?

He loved it! He kept going around pointing to everything with a tractor, you could tell he was in heaven. My mother brought him so that my husband and I could set everything up, as soon as he walked in he threw his hands up and said, "Happy Birthday!"

Q: Why is this such an important family event?

We are older parents and he will most likely be our only child. Being an only child myself, he is my motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only grandchild. There was a time when we didn't think we would have him and we are so very thankful we get the chance to be his parents. Celebrating Riley will always be a big deal to us.

Q: Will you do this all again?

Absolutely! The large head start gives me plenty of time to work out kinks in designs and see what is working and what isn't going to pan out. I'm already brainstorming for next year.

Q: Any tips for the rest of us? • Have a variety of adhesive on hand. What works for scrapbook pages and cards isn't always the best for making items that will be hung or handled a lot. Personally I love Scor-Tape, Glossy Accents and Multi-Medium Matte. The Scor-Tape gives me a strong initial hold while the liquid glue dries to make everything permanent. You might find another combo that works well for you, but your go-to products might not work when making party decor. • Make one of something before committing to X number of items to see if you like it. I do this because it gives me an idea if I'm really going to like it and want to stick with that design. That has saved me before when I made one and didn't like the result. If I had cut out multiples, it would have been a huge waste. • If something isn't working don't be afraid to start over. After the first piece of the original banner was made I wasn't thrilled with it but thought it would be cute all together. About half way through I realized it wasn't going to give me the look I wanted and I should start over, but I was stubborn and thought I just needed to finish for it to come together. I should have trusted myself and realized I wasn't going to like it in the end. It would have saved me a huge headache. • Don't just look at the party planning blogs. The blogs that are strictly party planning can have some great ideas and I take some from there, but most of the time they have a team helping to get everything together. I like to make sure I find some ideas on Pinterest that include moms like me, one person trying to do what she can. • YouTube. It can be a life saver. Chances are someone has made something similar to what you want to do. They might have a tutorial showing it step by step or just the finished project and tell you what they learned along the way. It can be a handy resource for some great DIY ideas. • Not everything has to be handmade by you. I love personalized water bottles and while I can design and print them myself I choose to order them. Just coming up with the design can be time consuming, add in that the blank waterproof labels are pricey and that has me running to Etsy. I get the cute look and have time for the more important decor items.

Meet Renee White, a 51-year-old church office and financial secretary in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She has agreed to give us an inside look at how scrapbooking impacts her life.

How and when did you get started scrapbooking? My sister-in-law introduced me to this wonderful hobby when the kiddos were smaller. Maybe 14-15 years ago. I thought it was so much fun putting photos down on paper and mixing in some stickers. Yes, I said stickers. Then I discovered the special edged scissors. The rest is history

Describe your scrap space? My space went from the outside playhouse that the kids abandoned to taking over our smallest bedroom in the house. We are empty nesters as of this fall. That is taking some adjustment. But in moving to the space inside I set out to make it organized. I was only keeping what I would use. I have found containers from the Dollar Tree and kept most all of my tools and such out to be seen. If I see it, I will use it. But most of those items are nicely tucked away in pretty containers. So seen but unseen and neat. Now when I sit down, I know where everything it. It makes for a faster time of creating.

Time spent scrapbooking? I try to get in an hour or two per week. That could be anything from making a card, cleaning up the scrap room, working on a layout or coloring in the new adult coloring books. But at times, life, health, lack of mojo will just keep me in a stall for days or weeks.

What are your best organizational tips? Know what you have. Keep it accessible if at all possible. I keep the items I use most on my desk but in containers with like items.

How do you describe your style? It is very fluid. I love having the structure and linear style that I get from using SG (Scrapbook Generation) sketches. But I will also just do a very free-flowing, lots of layers and embellishments type of layout.

Do you have a set budget for scrapbooking? Not really. I have two children in college and I know what I need for household functioning. I allow myself to grab a few things if I know that I will use them. I am working very hard to think about my purchases. If it is a tool that can be used over and over then it does stand a better chance of being purchased.

Where do you get your inspiration? I get ideas online on message boards, Pinterest and of course from the CREATE gallery. Oh, and I watch process videos on Youtube and get ideas there.

Advice for finding more time to scrapbook? I finally just have to have time for me. I call it my mental health break. I am a happier person if I get the chance to make my way to my room, turn up some music and just sit for awhile. My advice is to be strong, and nicely tell family that dinner has been served, all is cleaned up and it is now my time. You just have to sometimes let them know you need the time.

Is there a social aspect to your hobby? I am a member of a scrapbook message board and they just seem like family. We have become sounding boards for each other and give great virtual hugs when needed. These ladies are all over the world, but several make arrangements to meet while traveling if for nothing more than a coffee. Just to make sure a connection is made in person. I decided to travel by myself to a crop seven hours away to meet up with a group of these ladies. My family thought I had lost my mind. My oldest son just knew we were rooming with ax murders! He didn't know if they needed to worry about me or my roommate.

What does this hobby mean to your life? As I am getting older I realize it means more to me than I know. My grandmother was diagnosed with dementia and I wanted her to have a scrapbook with all of the family in there along with their names. I thought rather naively that this would help her to remember me and my family. Well, that didn't work. Also after my daddy was diagnosed with cancer I did a little mini-album for his last Christmas with us. Just so he would know how much he meant to me. I now think that maybe someday, as we are all older that the kids will be happy to look back and see that we did live. And we had a great time while doing it.

What are your thoughts on scrapbooking? I worry that it will all go away at some point. The companies seem to be disappearing all the time. Local scrapbook stores are closing every time you turn around. It is scary to think that all of these fun things we use to make pages will just be gone one day. Of course, my family will look at my room and say "Mom, you couldn't use all of this paper if you scrapped something every day." AND they would be correct. But I see the importance of doing this and leaving something for the ones after us to come along and look at. I enjoy making cards and giving them to people. In this day of digital items, it is nice to actually have something to hold, tuck away for another day.

Design or technique? I like the technique side. I love discovering something new. I love anything paper related. If I find something I haven't tried I do look into what it takes to get it done. It is something new to learn.
