president ’S MESSAGE We are more than halfway through 2017 and the Singapore Cricket Club’s (SCC) Night Race, in conjunction with the Singapore Grand Prix from 15-17 September, is upon us once again. Tickets have been eagerly snapped up and the SCC team is gearing up behind the scenes to bring you a fun night of adrenaline-pumping entertainment on the F1 tracks. The tail-end of July saw some glitzy action where the Bayern Munich Fan Club held its friendly tournament at the Padang. I had the pleasure of welcoming FC Bayern Munich’s (FCB) President, Uli Hoeneß, and 10 other FCB Board Members to watch the tournament finals. The key highlight in August was the 5th Annual Singapore Cricket Club Twenty20 Tournament. Held from 11-13 August, this sporting event witnessed the participation of eight distinguished teams from around the world. Defending champions, Singhalese Sports Club, fought hard and emerged victorious, for the third time. I sincerely thank the T20 Organising Committee, chaired by Push Sharma, our generous sponsors, the participating teams, supporters and volunteers for putting in the time and effort to make this year’s Twenty20 a memorable one. The next major tournament that will arrive on the SCC’s doorstep is the Rugby 7s which will be held from 3-5 November. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the tournament and members can look forward to a stellar line-up of events. The Organizing Committee will share more details in the weeks to come. On another note, the General Committee (GC) and I would like to share some updates that are being implemented around the Club. The chairs in the Padang Restaurant have been replaced to complement the new red carpets while studier chairs have replaced the existing white plastic chairs at the Courtyard. To uplift members’ and guests’ first impressions as they step into the clubhouse, new carpets were also laid out at the front entrance. More CCTV cameras were installed around the clubhouse to enhance the security of our members. Lastly, improvements in service are forefront in our minds and as our operation teams strive to meet and exceed members’ expectations, we will be introducing new promotions and menu items periodically. Members would have received an “Update on Particulars” form in August together with their Statement of Accounts. This exercise is to increase the accuracy of our members’ contacts as we want to keep members updated on the latest Club happenings and events. I strongly encourage all members to respond and help us help you get more out of the Club. Starting from 1 September, members who purchase the series discount advertisement package for The Padang will enjoy the added perks of $100 Food & Beverage credits being credited to their membership cards. We hope that this will encourage more members to support the publication of our magazine and share their knowledge and expertise with fellow members. On a somber note, the last two months saw the passing of four of our distinguished members; Ted Wilson, Chakraborty Avik, Peter W J Lugg and Michael Wong Pak Shong. Let us take a moment to celebrate the friendships, appreciate the contributions and treasure the memories of our late friends. As we move steadily towards the last quarter of the year, let’s continue to forge ahead towards a spirit of continued unity and camaraderie at the SCC. Wine Circle (To be launched in October 2017) Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) is a Premier Sports Club and Social Club situated at a prime location and our membership profile comprises distinguished members from around the region who are actively utilizing the Club to entertain, socialize and build networks. Over the years, the Club has a vast group of members who are ‘Wine Appreciation Enthusiasts’ and a Wine Circle will allow members to network and to share their knowledge of wines with fellow enthusiasts. ‘Ted’ Wilson
OBITUARIES
Mr Peter W J Lugg
Charles Edward Wilson, or “Ted” to his friends, was an enthusiastic supporter of the Rugby Section. Together with the late Len Foster and Ralph King, they were instrumental in forming the SCC Rugby Youth Development Sub-Committee which is the pre-cursor of the current Rugby JSM program. Ted was a very kind and considerate man. JSMs found him a worthy sounding board if they needed advise in preparation for their studies and working lives ahead. Ted always said to them “Do what you can for SCC Rugby and not ask what SCC Rugby can do for you.
Peter Lugg was a long-time, stalwart member of the Marketing & Communications SubCommittee and served as a General Committee member from 1998-1999. Known for his excellent command of English, Peter lent his proof-reading and copy-editing expertise to The Padang and other Club publications. A cheerful, devoted and selfless member, Peter will be dearly missed.
The Club records, with deep regret, the passing of our members. Our sincere condolences go out to the families of the dearly departed.
Sadly, Ted passed away on 26 July 2017 in the United Kingdom. We acknowledge his contributions to the SCC Rugby Section. May he rest in peace.

Recent Events Pick up @ Padang 30 July 2017
A 1000-strong crowd turned up with their families and kids in tow to enjoy a casual morning at the Padang. The Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) organized “Pick up @ Padang” at the iconic Padang to support the nationwide celebration of National Day 2017 through sports. With the theme of “Pick up @ Padang”, both SCC members and members of the public joined in and “picked up” the below sports from 8am to 1pm. The activities included tennis, ultimate frisbee, bubble soccer, soccer darts, water soccer, standard obstacle challenge, human foosball and animal kingdom. “Finally, we get Pick up @ Padang” said an Ultimate Frisbee enthusiast. The event is in support of GetActive! Singapore and Get Active Car-Free Sunday SG in July.
Sports Camp
31 July to 4 August 2017 The Singapore Cricket Club (SCC), in partnership with Sports Camps Singapore, has been organising multi sports camps at the iconic Padang field, in the heart of the city, during various school holiday periods over the last three months. Being a premier sports and social club in Asia, our goal for these camps is to promote sports and provide children with the necessary exposure to learn and experience more sports than they usually would. This, in our opinion, will give children the motivation to participate within a sport that they actually have an interest in and join our SCC Academies. The specialised and qualified coaches from the various sporting academies provided a structured and fun program that focused on skills development, game understanding for eight different sports and ensured that the kids have heaps of FUN! Each child was introduced to the following activities — Cricket, Football, Rugby, Tennis, Squash, Netball, Hockey and Disc Golf over the last several camps with more sports such as Basketball, Futsal and Floorball to be introduced at the next camp in October.

Recent Events National Day Picnic 9 August 2017
The Club’s National Day Picnic was a wonderful success, with loads of activities for the kids including a wet bouncy castle, inflatable obstacle challenge, carnival games, face painting, balloon sculpting and bubble soccer. Anjali Anderson and her family had a fun day at the National Day Picnic. She remarked that “it was so well organised that our kids had a blast. We don’t often bring them to the Club as they are so young, but this was the perfect opportunity to do so as a family!” While the kids were having fun, the adults were enjoying the view of the State Flag Flypast flown by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), and for the first time, the Salute to the Nation was performed by the five RSAF F-15SG fighter aircrafts which was a feast to the eyes. The National Day Parade was screened ‘live’’ at the Main Lounge, Stumps Bar, Gilmour Room and the Gilmour terrace. Sumptious hawker food with local delights was also served at the Oval Restaurant and The Courtyard. Everyone had an enjoyable time admiring the splendid fireworks display, while lounging comfortably on their picnic mats, which was a thoroughly wonderful way to celebrate Singapore’s birthday!

Roads around the 2017 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix circuit will close from Wednesday 13 September (two days before the race) till Tuesday 19 September (two days after the race).
SCC Night Race Ticket Holders
1) As the Singapore Cricket Club is located within the circuit park, access to the Club will only be permitted for SCC Night Race ticket holders from Friday 15 September to Sunday 17 September. 2) The Club may be accessed via Gate 4. Members may download the circuit map from the SGP website for details and reference. 3) Pedestrian access will be available on 13, 14 and 18 September via Gate 4 located near the Asian Civilisations Museum.
General Road Closure
1) St Andrews Road/Connaught Drive – There will be no vehicular access into the Club from Wednesday 13 September 0000hrs to Tuesday 19 September 0530hrs. 2) Members who plan to drive are advised to exit the Clubhouse on Tuesday 12 September by 2330hrs before the road closure commences. 3) Collyer Quay/St Andrews Road/Stamford Road – Roads will reopen on Wednesday 13 September, Thursday 14 September and Friday 15 September from 0530hrs to 0930hrs.

T20 Mania Grips SCC
The SCC International Twenty20 returned, bigger than ever, at the Padang from the 11th to the 13th of August. Cricket enthusiasts enjoyed the power-packed 5th edition of the tournament with some riveting world-class action. Teams from Australia, South Africa, India, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Singapore provided sensational entertainment; eight teams in all fought tooth and nail over a weekend where cricketing legends and enthusiasts graced the hallowed Padang turf. Singapore Cricket Club’s (SCC) marquee player, the legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, shared his valuable insights in a masterclass session with our junior cricketers. The next couple of days saw the spin wizard along with our other marquee players, Australian test cricketer Ed Cowan and Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof, donning the club colours to represent SCC.
The Singapore side was limited to a total of 130 runs by the SSC, who then made short work of the total in 8.5 overs with a 131 run opening stand between Shanaka and Banuka. A partnership with 9 fours & 12 maximums enabled SSC to lift the trophy for the third time once again. Sri Lankan internationals Dasun Shanaka and Sachitra Senanayake, being the destroyers in chief, raked in best returns with bat and ball in the tournament as well. The Cricket section has, yet again, hosted a tournament which was led by Pushpendra Sharma, Chairman of SCC T20, and his team. Team SCC have yet again made the tournament as the biggest draw in South East Asia. Many thanks go out to all of our generous sponsors for their support and contributions. As we wrap up a successful T20 season, we look forward to organizing a phenomenal Twenty20 Tournament in 2019 once again.
An early loss to SCG and later to defending champions Madras Cricket Club curtailed our chances amidst some entertaining match-wining performances. Ed Cowan dominated with the bat (84* Vs Rowlin Cricket Academy). Abhiraj Singh and Varun Sivaram took 4 wickets apiece as best returns amongst the bowlers. The Sinhalese squad went through unscathed with first time entrants SCG Trust, and gave a fine performance at the league stage to enter the Semi-Finals. The Final was held between the undefeated Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) and Singapore Rising Stars who took out defending champs Madras CC in a thrilling run chase in the semis.

Led by Convenor Tony Fisher and Secretary John Taylor, some 30 Baluteers, plus one observer, journeyed to the British Club Bangkok (BCB) to participate in the 10th Anniversary Balut Competition. Our hosts, led by Convenor David Quine and Paul Cheesman, could not have been more genial and hospitable. Proving that in Balut a little alcoholic stimulus does focus the mind and enhance ones chances, Ben Cunico almost singlehandedly carried the day which saw the SCC gain a ‘clean sweep’ and a comprehensive victory. Wednesday, 12th July The 3rd League tournament was hosted by the NUSS and won by SCC’s Team 5 (Else Stokkmo, Rosemary Tessensohn, Yasmin Gaffoor, & Fahmida Hassanbhai) who amassed 2,474 points. In 2nd place was NUSS Team 2 with 2,392 points followed by SRC Team 1 with 2,366 points. Tuesday, 13th June A large contingent of 36 players turned up for this event. Jasmin eased ahead of Anwar (641) with 643 points to take top prize. Rick Clements put in a sterling performance to gain 3rd place with 636 points. Adam Tybally came last with 509 points.
After 3 rounds, with 3 more to go, SCC’s Team 4 (Jasmin Fisher, Renee Balagopal, Anwar Gaffoor & Soma Devi) is in the lead ‘by a nose’ with 7,122 points. The Tanglin ClubTeam 2 is in 2nd place followed by SCC Team 5 with 7,023 and 7,003 points respectively.
Tuesday, 25th July We had a turnout of 22 players for this “merry meeting” which was more than a decent number considering this came immediately on the heels of the Bangkok trip. Honours goes to Alukkathara Purushothaman with 653 points. Cynthia Robless was in 2nd place with 636 points, while Anwar grabbed the 3rd slot with 624 points. To underline the uncertainty of this game, and one of the reasons for its attraction, our esteemed Captain, Raj Kumar, kindly propped up the chart with 483 points. Saturday, 5th August It was a great afternoon that combined fun and culinary delights; thanks to Jasmin’s Indian-inspired menu. There were 22 players in attendance with Geoff Mullet (671 points) squeaking ahead of Wayne Nerva (670 points) thanks to a magical last-gasp Balut on sixes. Jasmin achieved the 3rd spot with a credible 606 points. Wayne, again, shone with the highest individual score in 1 column (149) and Aundrea Bligh gracefully accepted the miniature Chivas for her hard-fought 502 points!

Victor Yeong will be the Team Manager for the Billiards and Snooker while Peter Gilchrist and Glenn Yeo will take part in the Billiards Tournament. A number of our section members will be heading down to Kuala Lumpur to show their support as well.

6 REDS TOURNAMENT The Section organised and hosted the 6 Reds Tournament on the 1st of July. 6 teams participated in this tournament - The Royal Bangkok Sports Club and The RBSC Polo, The Penang Sports Club, The Penang Club, Royal Selangor Club and our very own Singapore Cricket Club Team. The Penang Sports Club beat Royal Selangor Club in the Final and emerged victorious. It was a proud moment as President Baljit Singh gave the trophy to the winning team. Under the leadership of Convenor Desmond Decker, the section ran a good tournament and all the guests had everything good to say about the warm hospitality that they’ve received. The event was graced by our President Baljit Singh and Games Control Board Chairman Mathew Streeton.

SCC Drawn Triples Champion – Ben, Rosemary and Menon
SCC DRAWN TRIPLES 2017
A total of 24 members took part in the Drawn Triples. Eight teams were placed in 2 sections. At the end of the preliminary rounds, Mary, Lew Foong (Ganesh) and Srinivasan topped Section A followed by Chai, Josephine and Purush(Anwar). Rosemary, Menon and Ben topped Section B followed by Melvin (Euan), Velu, and Candy. The semi-final was between Mary and Melvin’s team; and Rosemary against Chai’s team. Mary’s team won comfortably, while Rosemary’s team eked out a narrow win on the last end. The Final between Mary and Rosemary’s team was an exciting game played under cool weather. Rosemary’s team drew first blood, but Mary’s team took control from the 2nd end onwards. However, Rosemary’s team managed to close the gap at the halfway mark. Then, Mary’s team took off again and led 16-9 on the 12th end. Alas, that was the last time they scored. A change of strategy by playing the longer ends saw Rosemary’s team catch up and pull off a 20-16 victory. The 3rd place play-off was between Melvin’s team and Chai’s team. Euan played in place of Melvin. Save for 2 ends out of 18, the teams registered a score of only 1 or 2 shots per end. After the penultimate end, the score was 13 all. A combination of elements at the last end saw Euan’s team eke out a final shot to win 14-13. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to all the participants.

NATIONAL TRIPLES 2017
SCC bowlers continued to reign supreme on the National level by taking home three medals at the recently concluded National Triples. Euan, Melvin and Hui Kai finished second after beating John, Chia TC and Anthony from ELBC convincingly in their last game at SCC during the preliminary rounds. They played the same opponents again in the finals at Kallang but were unable to repeat their form and came in second best, taking home the Silver medal. The other team comprising Ganesh, Edmund and Christian finished 5th out of 7 teams in the group. Over on the Ladies side, it was an all SCC final between the youth team of Shermeen, Ming Li and Candy (replaced by Hui Shan in the finals) against the golden team of Amira, Mary and Virginia. It was tit for tat in the first half of the game before a late surge by Amira, Mary and Virginia saw them take home the title with a comfortable score of 19-12. Congratulations to all winners for flying the SCC flag high!

OPEN PAIRS TOURNAMENT
The Section has been buzzing with activities from the last quarter. The first was a small Hari Raya celebration on 26th June. Snacks such as gado gado and satay were served from 6.30pm, in addition to the evening being a corkage-free night!
For the first time since the Bridge Section was formed, an Open Pairs Tournament, held on Sunday 13th August 2017, was organized and was sponsored by GCF (Global Citizen Forum). In a way, the tournament aims to strengthen the bonds of friendship and the section will decide whether it should be a one-off event or to be held as a 3 or 5 year tournament.
The Section hosted the Quadrangle Game on Sunday 16 July at the Victoria Room for Keppel, Kembangan Bridge Club, SRC Bridge players and SCC’s own Bridge Section members. It was a friendly set of games where each of the four clubs sent eight players to participate. It was a round robin: 7 rounds and 4 boards per round. Lunch was provided and it was a valuable experience for the Section members who participated.
The tournament will be held at the Padang Restaurant. As space is a constraint, only a maximum of 15 tables will be played and section members will have first priority. Extra Bridge boards, cards and bidding boxes have been ordered as we are expecting a good turnout. The Bridge section will send out invitations through SCC to the invited clubs. There will be attractive cash prizes of $600 for the winning pair and $400 for runners-up and the winning club will also receive a trophy. The Bridge Section National Day event was held on 28th August and the Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on the 25th September. In all, it promises to be an exciting quarter.
CHANGES IN THE SECTION There have been some changes in the Section’s committee. Our very efficient Secretary, Trevor Chapman, decided to step down for personal reasons. The Section would like to acknowledge and thank him for his contributions with gratitude. As such, Savithri Bawajee and Patricia Jasudasen have been co-opted into the Committee and they have begun their work in earnest. Players at a Monday session

BAYERN MUNICH LEGENDS AND THE BUNDESLIGA TROPHY ON THE PADANG
As part of their 2017 Asian Tour, FC Bayern Munich held an InterFan Tournament at the Padang on the 26th of July. Among visiting fan-clubs from all over Asia, the famous Bundesliga Trophy was on display and was accompanied by playing legends Miroslav Klose, Brazzo (Hasan Salihamidzic), Giovane Elber, Raimond Aumann, Ulrich “Uli” Hoeneß (F.C. Bayern Munich President and former national player) and Stefan Lehmann (FC Bayern Stadium announcer).Local legends also joined in with Rezal Hassan, Steven Tan, Razali Saad and Alexander Duric in attendance.

Ending their season on a high, the Strollers won the Equatorial Cup in a thrilling match which ended in a result of 4-3. A great team effort against a strong opponent also saw a stand-out testimonial performance by Yossi Azran, who scored two and assisted in another.
SCC NFL Players from the NFL were treated to a full training session from the world-class coaches of FC Bayern Munich. Overseen by Anthony Houlahan and Andrew Hutcheon from the SCC, the squad learned some of the secrets to the success of the 27-times Bundesliga champions.
SCC LEGENDS The SCC Legends are proving to be a force to be reckoned with, chalking up 4 wins out of 4 with notable performances from Glyn Vince, Charlie ‘Steak Sandwiches’ Ransford, Sir John Fernandez and Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Tang.

The PADS maintained their impressive season with a very successful June and July and are starting to build a strong squad. Some younger players are adding pace to the side and stalwarts Sir John Fernandez and Charles Ransford are both enjoying incredible seasons.

Respectively known to his fellow PADS as the blade runner, it was with typical Disco style that he scored 2 world class goals in his own testimonial against Muddy Whales — 5 nil down at half-time, a somewhat shell-shocked PADS rallied to the cause, pulling off an incredible second half recovery that saw an equaliser in a last minute from 12th man Whibbers. The final score was 5-5. Highlight no. 2 saw the PADS recent run of rich form continue with an impressive 8-2 victory against Hotspur Vets. Guest appearance from Capitano’s good friend, Paul Gibbs (exColchester, Torquay, Plymouth, Brentford and Barnsley) assisted in an impressive display against an ever-strong opponent. This was followed by further victories over Veterans United (3-2) and Muddy Whales (12-3), with new signing, Alex Durich, showing great potential in netting 6 on his debut, despite not playing for a full 90 minutes. If Alex Durich continues to show good form, he has a very good chance of becoming our first choice up front.

Intersection golf game
INTERSECTION GOLF GAME The intersection golf game was held on 20th June at the Sembawang GCC where 41 players took part in the game. The Snooker & Billiards section sent in 2 teams and won the tournament while the soccer section came in at 2nd place.
SOCIAL EVENING In conjunction with the Social Evening held at Gilmour Room on the 28th July, 7 full flights played a good social game at the Marina Bay Golf Course, before coming back to the club for dinner and drinks. There was a good turnout for the evening, with some invited guests who helped the section in the up-coming Annual Golf Championship.

MAJOR TOUR POSTPONED Due to the participants’ request, the major tour, initially slated for the end of August, to the Gold Coast has been postponed to the 10th to 16th September. We expect some 12 golfers to make the trip.

ANNUAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP The biggest event in the golfing calendar, the Gold Annual Championship, will be held on 6th September, at Seletar Golf & Country Club. The prize presentations and dinner will be held at the Padang restaurant and Gilmour Room, with the band, RTZ, in attendance.
POT GAME AGAINST TANGLIN CLUB The last event on the golfing calendar for the year, before the section AGM, will be the Pot Game against Tanglin Club, which will be held on 29th of September at Warren GCC.

SCC Ladies celebrate a hard fought title win
SCC Men finished 6-points clear to win title copy
Whilst many in the section were pondering if this year could get any better, our Men and Women first teams soaked up the success of the Sixes, geared up, trained hard and delivered yet another Double. This time — the big sweep of the National League Men and Ladies titles. A repeat of 2015 and the completion of a rare “Double Double”! The Men picked up 37 points from their 14 games and finished six points clear of second placed Jansenites and eight of Bronze medallist ORA. The Ladies on 33 points from 12 matches finished five ahead of runner up Jansenites and a whopping 14 ahead of first time medallist Hollandse Club.

DOUBLE CELEBRATION
Only 5-years ago the SCC Men from the Hockey Section would have given an arm and a leg for a medal in the top flight. In 2014, they claimed their first medal in the top National League when they finished with a Bronze. However sweet winning a Bronze was, it was extra sugar-coated as enroute we beat our arch rivals SRC 2-0 for the first time in 9 years and denied them the title, which was won by Jansenites. Then in 2015, the men were superlative in their performances and delivered a first-ever title for SCC in the Men’s side of things. The day before, the Women won the title for the 4th time and that led to a Double celebration. Always staying in a medal spot for the last decade, the Women claimed a bronze last season as did the men and what was considered disappointing, considering the highs of 2015 where Hockey was awarded Section of the year and bagged the other major awards, Sports Man, Woman and Team of the year.
In a year of doubles, SCC also bagged the top scorers’ awards in both leagues where Ben Rogers and Rhian Frizler (both from Wales) did the job by scoring 14 goals apiece. Laura Rogers, Ben’s better half, who also won the National League title this year will return to the UK with Ben whilst Rhian heads to her husbands’ native Germany, feeling all proud... A farewell party was organised on Friday 28th of July for them and the rest of the section enjoyed nifty grass hockey and light F&B to close out month. It’s noteworthy that the section has won 7 titles to date: Both the Cup competition at the SCC Sixes, National Junior League 3 Boys title, The Dutch Wooden Shoe Ladies title, Both the National League Men’s and Ladies’ titles and Junior Boys Liga title. The SCC 3rd and 4th XI men are currently in action in NHL3 and NHL4 and are still finding their footing in what is turning out to be very tough league. The Ladies combined team will play in the Women’s Liga where SCC has always featured in the top 2 since it started participating 4 years ago, winning it thrice and finishing second last season.

But only if you fully appreciate the agony of defeat can you thus embrace wholly the joys of victory. 2017 opened with the SCC International Sixes. Both our men and women have not won the Cup title since the inception of the tournament. However, in this 23rd edition of the world renowned hockey carnival, both SCC Men and Women tore through the group stage and bagged both the Men’s and Ladies’ Cup competition for the first time.

SCC GROWLERS 2017 VET’S CHAMPIONS OF SINGAPORE The SCC Growlers have been crowned 2017 Singapore Veteran Champions after beating Bucks in the grand finale, which saw them lift the coveted Muddy Penny Cup. The Growlers were captained by Stafford Bagot and the team was managed by Marcus Parry, both of whom were responsible for recruiting and motivating a solid squad from SCC’s veteran rugby community. Ages of the squad ranged from 35 up to 64, all of whom put their bodies on the line in the name of the Cricket Club. The Muddy Penny Cup is now in its second year and is contested by 4 of Singapore’s strongest veteran sides, including; Wanderers, Bucks, Gaulois and SCC. Whilst the current Lions, French, Wallaby and All Black squads could rest easy that the raw talent displayed by all players in the Muddy Penny Cup competition wasn’t going to easily threaten squad positions, there were a number of occasions where “champagne rugby” was certainly on display. The grand final saw the SCC Growlers up against their old foes “Bucks”. The last time the two sides met in May, Bucks walked away with a score line of 69-17, but revenge is sweet sometimes and the SCC Growlers put everything in to win the grand final 25-7. There was much celebrations pitch side after the win and well into the night. There was an added pleasure that 5 current and former captains of the SCC Growlers were either playing or in attendance to watch the grand final win. Here’s to next season, Grrrrrr…..

HKSC & SCC players wrapping it up with a celebratory dinner at Stumps Terrace
Friendly - SCC 10 HKFC 3 It was a pleasure to be able to welcome HKFC players to SCC as we are usually the ones heading over to their club for the 3’s tournament. This time around, their team comprised 13 players — 11 men and 2 ladies. When they arrived on a Saturday afternoon, some of them were showing signs of wear and tear from a couple of late nights. However, we thought that a good run within a non-air conditioned court would do them good. The format for the tournament was 3 sets with sudden death at 14 all. Our team brought in the big guns, Udai, and followed up with Ben Nicholson where both did their jobs winning 3-0.

There were some very close and exciting matches such as the ones Eleanor, Mohit, Sam and James played. The matches went down to the wire and were keenly contested. Mabel, after a slow start came back to win 2-1 against former SCC player Emma Duncombe. The final score flattered the talents of our team as in reality, the actual matches were more heavily contested then what the actual score indicated. Mabel Li in deep concentration
To wrap up the games, we had a celebratory dinner and drinks at Stumps Terrace. Mahes, as usual, organized a great buffet and everyone had a good time. Thank you to all of our players who participated and we look forward to more exciting games ahead.

Ready for Wimbledon!
SCONES, STRAWBERRIES & CREAM FOR A ‘SINGAPORE’ SUMMER In the lead up to Wimbledon, the section organised a Wimbledon Tennis Social on 7 July. All tennis enthusiasts at the club were invited to take part in the action. We discovered a few hidden talents at the club, who also played hockey, golf and squash in addition to tennis! Tournament director and ‘chief statistician’ Darren Wilson, through his elaborate system, had players play with different doubles partners through the night and it was a great opportunity to meet new players and to reward the hard work with strawberries & cream. Congratulations to all the medal winners!
TENNIS AND CAR-FREE SUNDAY At the end of July, the Padang was brought to life with a multitude of sports activities for the public to try their hand at. The WTA, organisers of the WTA Finals in Singapore, also organized some fun tennis games for children and adults.
JUNIOR NEWS SCC has a number of tennis junior sports members who have been very active in the local and regional tennis scene and we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate their recent achievements. Clare Cheng and Nadine Loh were part of the tennis team for the 2017 ASEAN School Games held in Singapore. Around 1,750 student athletes from the ASEAN countries took part in the multiple sports. The Singapore team emerged forth, following a closely-fought encounter with the Philippines team.

In July’s ITF Juniors held in Singapore, Rupika Pendyala and her partner had a good run in the doubles event an made it to the quarter-finals. The ITF Juniors tournament in Singapore is part of a larger circuit of tournaments around the world were juniors compete in to gain ranking points.
UPCOMING TOURNAMENT The Inter-Club Doubles leagues take place from 16th September to 22nd October. During this time, matches will be played at the SCC on the weekend. Everyone is invited to watch the matches as the teams could do with more cheering and support.
