PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Sports Department, the Singapore Cricket Club was approved by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) / Sport Singapore for a special pilot scheme for team sports resumption under Vaccination-Differentiated SMMs (VDS) + Test Protocol – this allows SCC to have a maximum of 10 fully vaccinated people playing team sports together at the approved sports facilities under strictly controlled and supervised conditions. I am proud to note that SCC is one of the very few private clubs permitted into this scheme – this is certainly an endorsement of our status as a premier sports club and our Sports Department’s ability to develop and administer programs and safety protocols in line with government requirements. It is great seeing the SCC Padang field and multi-purpose courts bustling with action again. At the time of writing, I am pleased to announce that after a 2-year COVID-19 enforced break, the Tanglin POT is back again. We wish to express our sincere thanks to our friends at the Tanglin Club for their strenuous efforts to kick-start this annual tournament. In addition to the Squash, Tennis, Darts, Lawn Bowls, Balut, Golf, Ten-pin bowling and Cricket matches, the Tanglin Club will inaugurally host Chess, Mahjong and ‘Spoofing’ as ‘demonstration events’ which will be competed for but not count towards the POT trophy. Unfortunately, Bridge and Snooker cannot be accommodated this year. It will be the first competitive outing for the SCC Chess group who have been having regular weekly games at the SCC. The Chess group now comprise about 28 enthusiasts with a spread of ages from 8 years to 70 years. While Mahjong as a member activity is not yet officially launched at the SCC, 22 of our members have signed up for an introductory Mahjong event to be hosted by the Tanglin Club on the Wednesday, 16 February in preparation for the POT match. On behalf of the General Committee, I wish all our contestants and participants the very best as we endeavour to retain the POT Trophy. A total of 661 Members participated in the recently-concluded Club Survey launched by the Marketing & Communications Subcommittee – we now have a much better idea of where we stand in terms of facilities quality, service standards, activities offerings etc, and are now examining the many thoughtful and constructive feedback received. We will share the results of the survey soon and work on new initiatives and strategies for future development. At the SGM held on 30 October 2021, members overwhelmingly supported the Resolution for the SCC to apply for an In-principle

Approval from the SLA for the renewal of the current lease which will expire on 10 September 2026. We are pleased to announce that we have been offered the In-principle Approval for a 30-year lease for the Padang and the Club House. The Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) has a total Gross Floor Area (GFA) of 7,808 square metres and had been offered a 30-year lease renewal at a total amount payable of $18,404,070. As our current GFA of 3,733 square metres is lower than the SRC’s, it would be reasonable to assume that our lease renewal cost would also be less. To this point, I would like to highlight that our current reserves as at 31 December 2021 stand at $28,000,000 in cash, deposits and short-term investments. In addition, we also own a freehold property at the Adelphi building with a book value of $7.5m. Activities and events at the Club are returning to almost pre-pandemic levels. The coming two months will see a host of F&B menu promotions to mark International Women’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Easter and Administrative Professionals’ Week. Our special F&B themed menus are always popular and booked out very quickly so do reserve your seats early. Meanwhile, we have organised a number of workshops and daytrips for you and your family and friends to enjoy. Our Interest Groups are also very busy with activities weekly/fortnightly/ monthly; there is something for everyone of every age range so do check them out. Our Community Outreach programs for the next 2months will focus on beach clean-up. Do sign up and participate in this meaningful green activity. After serving our Club for the past four years, our Club’s General Manager Mr. Sean Boyle has informed me that he will not be requesting an extension of his current contract; he has shared that he intends to retire and return to the United Kingdom. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have him as our GM the past four years. The General Committee joins me in thanking Sean for his dedication and diligence and we wish him all the best in this next chapter in his life. We have started the search for a candidate who understands our Club’s rich heritage and our needs and vision for the future. We will keep our members informed of developments. Thank you for your continued patronage of the Club and ardent participation in our events and activities. Official Opening:

The SHED and Bin Centre

On Saturday, 15 January 2022, SCC officially opened the Storage Building at Padang Field - now known as The Shed - as well as the new Bin Centre. The opening ceremony was officiated by Club President Zoher Motiwalla and Chairman of the Property Subcommittee George Abraham, and attended by General Committee Members, Property Subcommittee members, Sport Section Convenors, and the architects and contractors involved in the projects. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, guests toured the facilities before attending a sit-down luncheon - the program was organised in accordance with government safe management measures to ensure compliance and the health and safety of everyone. With these new facilities, the Club will now be able to properly store turf machineries, tools and equipment for field and facilities maintenance and have more efficient waste management. We are grateful to the GC, Property Subcommittee, Property & Housekeeping and Sports Departments for working together to see these projects to fruition, and to our Members for their support!

ESTABLISHMENT OF SUSTAINABILITY WORKING GROUP An initiative set up by General Manager Sean Boyle, the Sustainability Working Group was created to examine environmental and economic sustainability issues in the Club, and develop and implement strategies and solutions to address them. The Sustainability Working Groups consists of representatives from the Departments, and is headed by the Head of Property & Housekeeping Judy Ting. Look out for sustainability campaigns that will be launched soon, and we thank you in advance for your support and participation!

DONATION OF POOL TABLE TO ITSRAININGRAINCOATS The Singapore Cricket Club, in partnership with ItsRainingRaincoats – an initiative that aims to improve the lives of migrant workers in Singapore, donated our under-utilised pool table to a dormitory located in Kaki Bukit. We hope the migrant workers will enjoy their much-deserved breaks and relax while playing pool.

SCC JERSEY PRESENTATION TO SPORTCARES SATURDAY NIGHT LIGHTS FOOTBALL TEAMS Report by Brendan Hannigan, Member Engagement Subcommittee Member

It was a beautiful Saturday evening when we were welcomed by the Deputy Head of SportsCare Ms Katrina Eleanor Hall-Engle and their football coaches. The Member Engagement Subcommittee was delighted, on behalf of the Club, to present new jerseys to three of SportCares’ Saturday Night Lights (SNL) youth football teams District West Juniors, District West Seniors and Hiyaku on Saturday, 5 February 2022. Members will recall that in December 2019, the Club presented a cheque of $300,000 to SportCares, the philanthropic arm of SportSG and one of the Club’s primary philanthropic partners, in the presence of PM Lee Hsien Loong. The jersey presentation which was conducted at Jurong West stadium, one of SportCares’ eight SNL programme venues - was the latest in a series of engagements between the Club and SportCares, with both organisations sharing a collective vision of creating more sporting opportunities and access, greater inclusivity and integration as well as broader development of capabilities. Notwithstanding the restrictions these youth footballers have had to deal with over the course of the pandemic restrictions, not least the absence of competitive games, they remain energised by and committed to their sport. The players and coaches expressed their great appreciation for the continued support of the Club and its members. Member Engagement Subcommittee Chairlady Ms. Fathima Mohietheen and Subcommittee Member Mr. Brendan Hannigan applauded the players and coaches for their resilience during this challenging time and for all their achievements to-date and expressed the hope of seeing many of the players on the SCC playing grounds in the not-too-distant future.

Appreciating longtime SCC Member Jurgen Martiens This February, we bid farewell to one of the icons of SCC - Jurgen Martens - who returns home to Hamburg with his wife Ilona Over 50 years ago, Jurgen arrived in Singapore, immediately identified the best sporting club and joined the SCC on 11 March 1971. Over the years, he has been elected to different General Committees and chaired Subcommittees, sat in different Subcommittees as a Subcommittee member, helped in the Club’s international Tournaments - Hockey6s and Soccer7s, played football, and been an integral part of the Club. In 2004, Jurgen was conferred the status of Life Member in recognition of his contributions to the Club; in 2010, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award. In appreciation of Jurgen and all he has done for the Club, SCC President Zoher Motiwalla presented him with a SCC Silver Tankard before he left Singapore. On behalf of the Football Section, Convenor Amos Boon presented Jurgen a parting gift: a Section jersey with the squad number 51, which represents the number of years he has been part of the Club. The Football Section said, “Jurgen has represented the Section and worn many hats - as a player, committee member, advisor and role model. Jurgen loved football and the SCC. His dedication and passion to see a successful Section is evident til this day. Jurgen, we thank you for all that you’ve done for the Section and we wish you andyour wife safe travels and we hope to see you back soon.”

8 March is International Women’s Day (IWD) - a global day of celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the globe, and a day that marks a call to action for acceleraing women’s equality. Some of IWD’s missions include championing the women forging innovation through technology; celebrating women athletes and applaud when equity is achieved in pay, sponsorship and visibility; forging inclusive work cultures where women’s careers thrive and their achievements are celebrated; inspiring women to purse goals without bias or barrier. This issue, we speak to some of our female SCC Members - all powerhouses in their own right - and ask them to share their thoughts and views on a range of issues.

PREETI DUBEY Founder and director of Strive High Pte Ltd. Received the Singapore Entrepreneur 100 Award for 2021 and was elected as President and International Service Director of the Rotary Club of Singapore Heartlands for the year 2022 - 2023. What energizes you about your work in soft skills training and volunteerism? Soft skills training is my passion that gives purpose to my life, and volunteerism adds value to my work and makes me feel fulfilled. I began my professional journey as a trained psychologist and the role of soft skills in personal and professional development became apparent to me early in my career. During my first job as a career counsellor for an IT training institute in India, I found that many students faced rejections during interviews even though they were technically very competent and I soon realised it was because they lacked soft skills such as communication skills, presentation skills, stress management, etc. I persuaded the company to allow me to develop and deliver such workshops for the students and they were a success! As I progressed in my career and started working as a private banker, I had the opportunity to work with many people in leadership positions and I couldn’t help but notice that many people in leadership positions had no clue what leadership was all about, to the extent that they were detrimental to the growth of the people they managed, while client relationships were also adversely impacted. Soft skills such as having the ability to stay composed when everything is topsy turvy, make the right decisions during difficult times, solve conflicts and navigate tough conversations, are essential for success in personal and professional life. However, although people are expected to automatically become experts in these areas as they grow older in age and experience, that does not always happen as people have different strengths and weaknesses. And their shortcomings remain as a blindspot unless identified by an expert. This realization gave a purpose to my life and is now my passion. It gave me the perfect opportunity to use my knowledge and skills to help people develop soft skills. It became my dream to create a one-stop solution for professionals and client organizations’ soft skills development needs. In 2011, I moved to Singapore where I felt there are the best opportunities to grow, ample resources to develop oneself, and a very conducive business environment. I was ready to take the plunge once again and I studied, took the required certifications and courses, and founded Strive High with the tagline “Soft Solutions For Tough Problems” to reflect its ideology and aim to help solve people issues. And I love doing it! I have always been involved in different volunteering projects. I believe that when we do something selflessly for the benefit of another, or when we stand for a cause that needs due attention, we also add meaning to our own existence. I would like to share some of the projects I am currently pursuing. I am the President-elect of the Rotary Club of Singapore Heartlands, and one of the projects I am currently leading is providing financial literacy to our less-privileged brothers and sisters. We are currently pursuing this project with the beneficiaries of the Sree Narayana Mission. We have completed Financial Literacy Training for the first cohort, and we will begin with the second cohort next month. I am also a council member and treasurer for Muslim Kidney Action Association (MKAC), which runs several programmes and activities to provide compassionate care and support to kidney patients from low-income groups by encouraging interaction and imparting skills and awareness on issues that can be helpful to them. I enjoy volunteering at MKAC, as it provides me with the

opportunity to serve the beneficiaries and at the same time offers an excellent opportunity to understand the perspectives, rituals, beliefs and practices of my Muslim brothers and sisters. I think this is a great takeaway for me and enriches me personally. Because, if we learn to respect the differences of thoughts and practices of people from different backgrounds, especially race and religion, there will be a lot more harmony and peace in the world.

As a female executive, what were some of the biggest challenges and lessons learnt thus far? Walking to the office as a Mom-at-work, especially after taking a break while I was in the family way, was one of the most challenging parts of my life - from explaining to the recruiters about career gaps that I had to take to take care of my newborn kid, to assuring the employers that being a mom would not jeopardize my performance. It was challenging, especially when I compared myself to those who didn't fall in the same category. I walked extra miles at every step to prove my sincerity and avoid being judged as someone who thinks of her job as a lesser priority and less seriously because of home responsibilities. It is true that managing home, especially my kid, has always been my priority, but it’s never been at the cost of my work. I would try to leave the office on time and not socialize with colleagues after office hours; I would instead work for hours after reaching home and during the weekends to ensure I was always on top of my game. It was nothing short of hard work to perform both jobs efficiently to the best of my ability. I had forgotten about recreation, hobbies, sports, all of which I excelled at once. And it was indeed heartbreaking to find out that I was being paid lesser than my male counterparts and was perhaps easier to let go in case of a costcutting exercise. I often found myself asking this question "should women be penalized for taking care of family and kids or is it a cause worth being praised for?" family, women voluntarily sacrifice their careers. There is enough research to support my statement. This issue is so deeply engraved in our society that we don't find it severe enough to do much about it. The fact is, if we do not find answers to these questions now, we will continue to see a decline in the number of marriages and consequently the birth rate in developed countries. There will be a hike in divorces, which will affect the growth and development of children and eventually our future. I learned to overcome these barriers as I was determined to create a career. We need to create a support system at home and work. I developed a robust team at home, comprising my husband and son. They pick me up when I fall and hold my hand when I need support. It is vital to meet the right people and learn from them. We can get the help we need if we proactively find solutions to overcome them and not succumb to the challenges. I discovered the power of networking early in my career and forced myself to meet senior professionals over coffee or a drink to learn from them. They were primarily men, and I am grateful to each of them for stepping up to guide me, mentor me and connect me with the right people. There were times when I felt being judged by other people, but that didn't stop me. And nothing should stop us as long as we are guided by our values, principles and goals!

If you could give just one leadership lesson that you've learnt over the years, what'd it be? A position does not qualify a person to be a leader. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate the ability to lead. In the words of

Leaders need to be guided by compassion and be courageous to do the right thing. People are not machines, and they don't simply receive the instructions and follow the same way. They process the information, make decisions and do what they think is appropriate. If they are forced to do something they do not believe in, they feel disengaged and disconnect at the earliest opportunity. Leaders should have the ability to connect with others, listen to them, and address their concerns to influence them to take the desired actions. The leader needs to earn the trust and respect of the people they lead. Along with compassion, this requires courage. Courage to stop themselves from pushing personal agenda, take a pause and listen. Courage to look beyond the obvious and have a viewpoint guided by insight and driven by values that the leader espouses.

What does being mighty mean to you, and do you consider yourself to be a powerful woman? To me, being mighty means being able to use my voice to make a difference on the issues that matter to me. Well, I do consider myself to be powerful. This confidence has come with time, as I gradually discovered myself while fighting my struggles, identified my strengths, learnt to overcome my shortcomings, found my voice and built the courage to voice it out.

SARAH LUM Second-year university student and player in the SCC Women’s Football Team. When and how did you become interested in football, and what made you decide to play? I was first introduced to football in school during the physical education (PE) lessons in my secondary school. I enjoyed the sport but never really thought I would touch a football outside of PE lessons. Through various casual football sessions with friends, I grew to like the sport even more. In junior college I decided to go for the football trials with a friend, just for fun since I was free after school that day. While I was there I met a school mentor and spent most of the trials with her. Looking back, I think she was the reason I decided to sign up for football because I wasn’t intending on joining the sport, but I met her another day during my lunch break and she really convinced me to give it a shot after much apprehension.

Do you ever feel there are unfair comparisons between men’s and women’s football, and how do you think that should be tackled (pun intended)? Occasionally, I would hear comments that mock the pace of a women’s football game in comparison to men’s or about how we miss “simple/ easy shots”. Most of these are disclaimed as lighthearted banter or just a joke, and most of the time it doesn’t get to me. Sometimes an equal amount of criticism is targeted towards male players as well. Although, it is true that women’s football games may not be as fast-paced or ‘intense’ as men’s’ games due to innate differences, both games should be taken just as seriously. I am very grateful that the people around me are very supportive and I never feel like I’m being put down.

What are some of the reactions you have received when you tell people you play football, and how do you feel about them?

I feel like as long as people understand that there will always be a difference between men and women’s football, but still appreciate and respect the different aspects of both games, a more positive and inclusive environment can be created.

It’s a mix of responses. Older relatives will seem shocked and impressed and immediately ask why I decided to play football. People my age will respond with something along the lines of ‘oh, that’s cool!’ and ask me more about it and how I got started.

What does being powerful mean to you, and do you consider yourself to be a powerful woman?

I think one significant response that was a little weird for me was when someone said it was ‘admirable’ that I played football. I think about that response every now and then and I still get confused.. haha

To me, being powerful means to be adventurous and fearless in whatever we do, as cheesy as that sounds. I guess being powerful is very context dependent. In terms of football, it being a male dominated sport has never stopped me or made me doubt myself in my place as female. I just have fun and play football!

Technology and e-Commerce are often seen as male-dominated industries; is that true or is it changing? Yes, this is true and that is why I believe women add value, as they offer a fresh and often more commercial perspective. What are some strategies that can help women achieve the success they want in their workplaces, especially in male-dominated roles or industries? My approach has always been to cut out the noise. Yes women entrepreneurs are disadvantaged, particularly from an investing perspective, but if you focus too much on this, you start to act disadvantaged. I believe it is important to clearly define your goals, focus on them and just believe in yourself, as only you know what you’re truly capable of.

What does being powerful mean to you, and do you consider yourself to be a powerful woman? Powerful is about confidence, not caring what people think, being able to take a knock and get back on your feet stronger than you were before. When I first started my entrepreneurial journey, I used to worry too much about what others thought and would take knock backs personally. MARJET ANDRIESSE Vice President & GM APAC at Red Hat. Selected for the inaugural “Singapore 100 Women in Tech List” in 2020. Why is the success of women in technology important and how can we encourage it? I believe great organizations reflect how societies look like, and that is why we need a more balanced, diverse and inclusive team. As a fast-growing software company under IBM, we at Red Hat are committed to that goal. That is also a personal mission of mine, and my APAC leadership team actively supports it. This goal is also significant in Singapore, where female representation in the important fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is, at best, a mixed affair. Only 30% of local researchers and engineers here are women. Also, only 58% of women with STEM qualifications in Singapore work in jobs they are qualified for, compared with 70% for men. That is according to a study by the Nanyang Technological University. We know that diversity drives innovation, and being innovative is crucial in a tech environment if you want to stay ahead. Good ideas can come from anyone, and diversity helps make us smarter. In fact, there is a business case for diversity because companies that are more diverse can earn 19% more in revenue than those that are less diverse, according to Forbes.

And how do we encourage diversity? We need to create a business environment that is inclusive. We also need to make sure we have more women in the STEM industries. That is why I am honoured and humbled to have been selected in the SG100 Women in Tech list of female leaders. I am using that platform to help spread the message that we need more women in this field. We need more female role models, and capture the interest of girls from a young age and keep them engaged. Building a bank of highly visible and active female role models can positively influence girls' confidence, achievement levels and mental well-being. We can do this through youth outreach, community initiatives and upskilling. Here is where the “Kampong Spirit” approach comes into play. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a community to nurture talent. Role models take on a community mindset and lead their employees and youth groups in an open and inclusive manner. This creates a virtuous cycle that allows the community to nurture talent and encourage greater workforce participation.

What does being powerful mean to you, and do you consider yourself to be a powerful woman? I think the word ‘powerful’ has some negative connotation to it. It is not how we would describe ourselves at Red Hat, as we work in the open-source software industry, and we put to action our openmanagement principles, including meritocracy. For me, being powerful has to be more about paving the way for others. Within the organization, this means nurturing talent, including the younger and more senior colleagues. Externally, this is about having the ability to ensure your customers’ voices are heard, and you adapt to their needs. It is being able to pull the levers to make this happen for the people around you. For me, real power is not about just yourself. It is about looking after the people around you, your teammates, and the customers you serve.

What are the main challenges that the next generation of female leaders need to be cognizant of? Change is constant, and with technology, that change gains lightning speed. This means agility is very important for the next generation of female leaders. I have four tips for young female leaders in tech. First, in being agile and adaptable, make sure that if you are good at a technical skill, like coding, you also need to develop commercial and business acumen. That also applies the other way round. If you have business acumen, gain some technical skills, too. Second, stretch your abilities, mentally and professionally. The brain is a muscle and it needs to be flexed and challenged to remain strong. This can be developed faster if you engage a mentor. Third, try and do a stint outside of Singapore. This country is a mature market, so it would be good to gain experience in emerging markets, and be exposed to different cultures. Fourth, find your voice. Women need to speak up in meetings and in the boardrooms. By this, I also mean you speak up in decibel. From when I was a younger executive, I pushed myself to make at least one relevant comment at every meeting. From there, I started taking on bigger responsibilities, and I am happy to share my experiences now. MAR / APR 2022 THE PADANG

TIGER BREWERY TOUR 16 January 2022, report written by: Sora Thomson. (Grade 6. One World International School) On Sunday, 16 January 2022, my dad and I, alongside ten other SCC Members joined the SCC Tiger Brewery Tour. On the tour, our guide explained to us the history of Tiger Beer and we learnt how the beer is made. I was amused by the thought of how the size of the huge factory produces small cans of beer! The process of making beer looks easy, but that is far from the truth. A lot of cooperation and teamwork is necessary for that delicious can of drink. At the start of the tour, we learnt the history of Tiger Beer. Tiger Beer was founded in 1931 and is brewed by Heineken Asia Pacific. Originally the brewery was founded as Malayan Breweries Limited (MBL) in 1931, a joint venture between Heineken International and Fraser & Neave. There were some parts of the tour that were too difficult for me to understand but the history was interesting and provided a lot of food for thought. After we listened to the history of the company, we were shown the process on how the beer is made. After that, we were taken to where the beer is actually brewed. I found it interesting and learnt that it is not just Tiger Beer that is made in the factory; they brew Heineken and Anchor beers in that facility too. I came to understand that the process of making beer is not as simple as one might think. If one of the steps in the brewing process is lacking, the famous local beer as we know it will fail to be in our hands. After the tour, we were offered some free beers and snacks at the brewery’s own bar! If you were a kid like me, you would get a free coke at the end of the tour. There were even some cool gifts at the gift shop. I would definitely recommend everyone to come to the Tiger Brewery to see what they have and would personally like to go again.

SCC Kayak and Clean-Up Experience On 15 January 2022

Written by Max Shaw, 17 years old My family has been Members of the Singapore Cricket Club for about five years; we have always enjoyed the Club, and it is also really nice to participate in some of the experiences the Club organizes that highlight social responsibility. Last year we were able to take part in a beach clean-up which took a lot of hard work but was ultimately a rewarding experience with a lot of positivity from everyone who took part. Singapore is generally much cleaner than most other countries, but there is always more we can do when it comes to cleaning up the rubbish that collects in the water, damaging the environment and the habitat. I really think that SCC has done an amazing job in opening my eyes to the amount of trash and waste that lies and floats around our rivers. I found the whole experience to be productive but also a lot of fun as the venture of paddling around the center of the city and collecting trash that floated in the water made for some good conversation and laughs along the way. With the activity taking place around midday, the weather was extremely hot. Yet it allowed for my family and me to experience many interesting interactions, like the wide variety of tourist boats that came and passed us, multiple rowers (seemingly in training) and many people enjoying a day out on or around the river. The overall environment was very relaxing as the cooling water from the river tackled the overbearing heat and the location was surprisingly beautiful in some of the areas where there were moments where you could get a perfect view of the city. At school we are required to complete C.A.S. (Creativity, Activity, Service) objectives and being able to sign up to SCC organized events such as the Kayak and Clean-up is very helpful for this process in addition to being for a good cause. We have signed up to do the Kayak Clean-up again in a couple of weeks and I hope to be able to seize other opportunities, hopefully working with animals through the S.P.C.A or other similar organizations. It was a good day out and I would recommend SCC organized events such as these to other families.

BALUT SECTION’S FIRST IN-HOUSE GAMES 2022 The first in-house games were held on Thursday, 16 January 2022 at 7pm and Saturday 8 January 2022, at 2pm at the Gilmour Room. The tables, with four players each, were spaced out and each player had their own mats, cups and dice. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the games and catching up with each other in the new year.

BALUT AGM The Balut AGM was held on 5 February 2022 at 2pm at the Padang Restaurant. A total of 30 Section Members pre-registered and attended the meeting with safe measures in place. BOWLS AGM - 22 JANUARY 2022 The Bowls Section Committee would like to thank the outgoing Committee and all our Members for moving the whole Section forward last year. SCC DRAWN PAIRS 2021 After a spate of disruptions due to COVID-19 and travelling Members, the curtains closed for the SCC Drawn Pairs in early 2022. It was an extremely popular event, attracting 39 bowlers. The standard of play was stupendous, with many matches going the distance and down to the wire. This was the first tournament where we debuted the use of technology to post fixtures, update live scores and share results. Special appreciation must be reserved for Section Committee Member Melvin Tan, who was the sole webmaster. 19 teams were split into four groups, with the top two of each group advancing to the quarterfinals. Interestingly, all table toppers were toppled in the quarterfinals. The first semifinal was an all-ladies affair, with Mary and Jennifer victorious against Josephine and Peck Tee 20-10. In the other match, Atiff and Retna stormed to a 24-4 win against KC and Anwar to set up an enticing final. In the quest for glory, Mary and Jennifer proved too good for Atiff and Retna and strolled away with a 18-8 victory.

Bridge

In common with many in-Club activities, Bridge continues to be impacted by COVID-19. As safety measures evolve, predicting when we will be able to play in-person (in the way that we used to) is not possible. Whilst we are keen to resume Bridge activity at the Club, the nature of the duplicate game means it is likely that online bridge will remain a key part of our offering to Section Members for the foreseeable future. Apart from our regular Monday 7pm sessions (online), we have tried to accommodate those new to bridge with one table at the Men’s Bar when possible. SCC Bridge Section also participates in the Singapore online interclub tournament that was established during 2021. Our experienced (and patient) Game Director, Carlton Parker continues to be invaluable. Apart from directing our Monday game, he has supported us in trialling an initiative to support those Members who wish to develop their bridge knowledge and skills via online workshops. Going forward, the Bridge Section Committee will maintain and develop the Section to reflect the wishes of our Members and seek out ways that we can meet in-person whilst remaining within government guidelines. APPROVED 5 V 5 FACILITY We are delighted to announce that our club has gotten approval from Sports SG as one of the 5-v-5 facility for sports. We have started training in groups of 10 as of the 29th of January 2022. It is important to note that we are strictly abiding to the procedures and protocols. All players will have to undergo a supervised ART test on site before they are allowed to train. We hope that this will soon lead us to the end of the Covid era!

TEQBALL NATIONAL CHALLENGER CUP 2021 Some of our players took part in the inaugural Teqball Challenger Cup last December at OCBC Square. The competition was organized by the Teqball Association of Singapore and the winners of the tournament will be given a chance to represent Singapore in the international arena next year. The Football Association of Singapore decided to hold the competition during the AFF Suzuki Cup (Southeast Asia’s premier football competition) as part of the fans engagement. Teqball is one of the fastest growing sport in the world ever since it was recognized by the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA). It is a sport that is played on a curved table, combining the elements of football and table tennis. The players are allowed to hit a football with any part of their body, except for their arms and hands. The game can be played between two players (singles) or four players (doubles). Golf

We bid farewell to the year 2021 and look forward to the year 2022 and the Year of the Tiger. We would also like to wish all our Chinese Section Members a happy and prosperous Chinese New Year. 2021 was a difficult year for all and we thank the outgoing Section Committee Members and our outgoing Convenor S. Bala for their time, effort and contributions during the current pandemic period where it has been next to impossible to hold large gatherings and sports activities including our regular monthly golf games, annual game, social gatherings and dinners. In 2022, the Golf Section Committee has planned a full calendar of events that should bring us back to the pre-covid years subject to the prevailing government conditions and regulations. We have a packed calendar installed for our Members. An announcement will be made about the golf calendar for the year and events shortly. In January we started off with a bang where we hosted our Members to a social game at the Orchid Country Club on 21 January for 80 golfers. We had a full turnout for the game and the weather was indeed kind to us. It was good to see our participating Members in good cheer and having a good time despite the social distancing rules having to be strictly adhered to. At the time of writing, we will be holding the annual Ang Pow Game at the Warren Golf & Country Club on 10 February comprising 120 golfers and a social golf event at the Singapore Island Country Club on 24 February for 60 golfers. Due to the prevailing situation, all golf games are subject to approval by SportsSg and the Golf

Section Committee shall endeavour to ensure that these events go on as planned. Naturally, in order for these events to be approved, we need your support and participation to make up the numbers for each event. We would like to encourage our Members to make time to participate in these events, especially the new Section Members who have joined us recently. 5 v 5 Test Event - Blue Wristband = Negative ART

NEW BEGINNINGS ON THE WELL-LIT PADANG We’re two years into this pandemic, and it’s been a good six months since we’ve been told it’s endemic. While measures have loosened somewhat, we’ve not had much chance to pick up our sticks and hit some balls. Some of us may have forgotten how to play. I for one am guilty of that. We’ve been allowed to train in small groups, at times in pairs and in others in groups of fives, but we have not had league games in that time. As the Padang hosts the National Gallery’s Light to Night Festival, thankfully that was not the only light on our horizon. There’s been some light at the end of this long COVID-19 safe measures management tunnel. A pilot exercise of 5 v 5 hockey was announced by SportSG and we held a test event on 28 January 2022 at 5.45pm with 10 of our Section Members participating. In compliance with safe measures, our guys had to test negative with an ART prior. Thankfully, all did. On to the game, it finished 12-4 in favour of Team Black. Prem Singh was hampered by an injury and that did not help Team Gold somewhat in stemming the slew of goals from Team Black. As for Section matters, it’s been ages since we’ve had proper socials. This meant we couldn’t do a proper farewell for Fiona Herbert. The legendary Ladies 1s full back has relocated back home. We surely will miss Fiona’s free-spirited laugh-a-minute antics. Rest assured though, the Section Committee is looking into any and all available means to host some safely distanced engaging socials in good time. We’re now allowed 10 to a court with the Pilot Scheme for Team Sports Resumption under Vaccinated Differentiated SMMs (VDS)! Section Committee Members have worked hard alongside the Sports Department to attain the honor of being the first sports team to pilot the program in the SCC. The Section has not had a full court training since the pandemic started and we’re excited to pick up from where we left off in 2020! On a serious note, the AGM for the Netball Committee took place in mid-January in now a new normal mode of meetings: Zoom.

The Section has seen a reduction in Juniors as families relocate and move back home due to the pandemic. However, we are currently in discussions for the launch of the Junior Netball Academy mid Q2 of 2022. With the support of the Club and other sporting Sections, the Academy aims to redevelop and rebuild our pipeline of strong junior players. Keen to learn Netball? Genevieve Guiney continues to lead the Section as Club Captain and Kyesha Abdullah remains as Secretary in the upcoming year. Having served the maximum term of three years as Convener, Nanthini Viknesh steps down for Ranjini Visvalingam. Nan now commits to the Section as the Treasurer. Other Committee Members who have newly been elected into the committee are: Anushree Prasad as JSM Rep, Annamei Forbes as Social Rep, and Audi Nuraini co-opted into managing Tours & Fixtures. Thank you to the outgoing committee for their commitment to the Section. Congratulations to the incoming Committee! With restrictions hopefully easing, we have some social events lined up for everyone to get to know each other better off court with dress-up nights, curry nights, casual Stump catch-ups and activities to re-acquaint the Section Members both old and new, social and playing. With the ‘Pilot Scheme for Team Sports Resumption under Vaccinated Differentiated SMMs (VDS)’ kicking off, it does seem like the netball-related calendar is going to start filling up soon! Discussions are still ongoing, but the Section is looking to host an internal league and participate in friendly games in 2022 under this scheme.
