PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, On 24 May 2022, the Club conducted a dialogue session on the lease renewal and possible redevelopment options. The presentation focussed on the lease renewal with reference to the potential cost and the timelines. The salient points in this regard are that the current lease expires on 11 September 2026 and the latest date to make an application for the lease renewal is 10 September 2023. Members should note that we have been given an in-principle approval for a 30-year lease by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA). In addition, a presentation was made of the General Committee (GC)’s proposal to consider the permanent roofing of the very popular Stumps and Gilmour Terraces and the Courtyard in tandem with the lease renewal provided; given the conservation nature of our building, we are able to obtain the approvals from the relevant authorities. Several members had proposed for the GC to also consider more significant development options e.g. an underground development or an additional site. The GC’s view is that these should be considered after a detailed strategic review of the SCC has been undertaken and not necessarily in conjunction with the lease renewal given the tight timelines to effect the lease renewal. Details of the dialogue session will be shared with the Members; we are currently in the midst of consolidating all feedback received and will put together a paper for presentation to the membership in due course. The project to convert the former Jackpot Room to a MultiFunction room is underway. Demolition works have started and upon final approval of the design, the room should be available for members by mid-September. The room will house a golf simulator and additionally cater to member activities (e.g. Bridge, Chess, Mahjong etc), member work spaces and could also cater to small-group member functions. After a two-year hiatus, we were very excited that we were able to organise the SCC Soccer7s 2022 Tournament from 10 – 12 June 2022 on the Padang and host more than 60 teams across six categories – Open, Masters, Legends, Women, Youth and Corporate; this also included five teams that flew in from Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. The tournament also welcomed its marquee player Dietmar “Didi” Hamann - the German international defensive midfield legend who has played for Bayern Munich, Newcastle, Manchester City, and Liverpool. Didi was the VIP at the tournament’s gala dinner on 10 June, conducted a special
coaching clinic for more than 30 kids on 11 June, and eager fans flocked for meet-and-greet sessions with him during the tournament weekend. Our SCC WNFL A team won the Women’s Cup Championship, while our SCC NFL team come in as Plate runner up in the Open category – well done to our teams! Team SCC also performed splendidly for the Padang Shield Games 2022 which SCC hosted our neighbour Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) to. Our Golf Section competed first against SRC on 15 June, while Tennis, Snooker, Bridge, Balut, Hockey, Football and Cricket played on 18 June. The final score was SCC 5 – SRC 3, and we celebrated the camaraderie between both clubs with a glorious feast at The Padang Restaurant. Well done to our teams! The return of events and activities have brought members back to Club in full force, so much so that we now have issues trying to meet demand; our kitchens are at full capacity, and we are operating with very lean culinary and F&B service teams. These are good issues to have, but they are issues nonetheless that we are trying to resolve. At the same time, food and beverage prices as well as utilities costs are still steadily increasing and economic forecasts predict this trend will continue for a long while; this is something not within our control that we still somehow need to manage. While we plan and strategise to ensure the smooth operation of the Club, we will also be working on renovating our Clubhouse to create an even better environment for our members and guests. Due to the deteriorating condition of the SCC Clubhouse building windows, the Club is embarking on a windows replacement project that will be implemented in phases to minimise inconvenience to our members. However, this also means that during the different phases of renovation, some F&B outlets will need to be closed. Please refer to the Club Notice on pg 5 for more information. As things continue to improve, new challenges will also present themselves – these are opportunities for improvement and positive changes. I ask for your patience as we look to boost our manpower to levels that can adequately handle demand and tackle the challenges we are facing, while also preparing for our near and not-so-near future. See you at the Club!

CLUB NEWS
Race to Rugby World Cup It was a privilege to have rugby enthusiasts and adventurers Ron Rutland and Adam Nunn visit the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) on Sunday, 29 May 2022. They were being hosted at the SCC by the Singapore chapter of the Rhinos rugby fraternity. Ron, having previously cycled from London to Tokyo to deliver the 2019 Rugby World Cup whistle together with his riding partner Adam, were here on route cycling from Tokyo to Paris to deliver the ceremonial match whistle for the opening game of the men’s Rugby World Cup in France which kicks off in September 2023. From Singapore, it will be island hopping across Indonesia, a ferry to Darwin, cycle to Sydney and the duo then fly to New Zealand to deliver the ceremonial whistle for the opening game of the women’s Rugby World Cup 2022 beginning on October 8th. The next leg will be to cycle through South and North America, fly across to Iceland then the UK, before they embark on the final leg of cycling to Paris for the start of the RWC 2023. More than just an adventure, the duo plan to raise $200,000 for the ChildFund Rugby, a charity which offers opportunities for young people from disadvantaged communities to play, learn and lead through Rugby and sport. When asked what the most challenging aspect of the journey is, Ron quipped, “It is keeping the ceremonial whistle safe and making sure it makes it to both New Zealand and France in time for the respective Rugby World Cups.” The Singapore Cricket Club wishes them safe travels and may they inspire others to embark on similar journeys of giving back to the larger community through Sport. Overall Winner : Singapore Cricket Club Well done to our Sections for their hard work competing against Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) and a big thank-you for winning us the Padang Shield this year! Every two years, one club will cross the Padang field to visit the other and renew ties through friendly competition and shared meals. We were to host our neighbour SRC in 2000 but unfortunately the Padang Shield Games had to be postponed due to the pandemic. This year we have finally been able to host this event, and it has been our privilege and honour to do so. Here’s to many more years of camaraderie between our clubs... Til the next time!

Wine Circle
Convenor: Naveen Gupta | Article by: Joanna Ossinger
The Wine Circle held an event at the STUMPS terrace on 22 June that gave members, especially those who couldn’t attend previous events, an opportunity to sample different wines in a networking session. Attendees were treated to offerings of white and red, some sparkling, from various places around the world. The event offered a nice chance for some of our newer members to meet more people in the section, as well as members of the Club leadership including President Zoher Motiwalla, some General Committee members and some representatives from the leadership of other Sections who were our honored guests for the occasion A special congratulations goes to Section Member Vijay Sirse, who was awarded a bottle of wine for his recent successful efforts to recruit more members. The Wine Circle continues to expand, and we would invite anyone interested in learning more or attending our events to reach out to Ms. Cassie Wong at cassie.wong@scc.org.sg. The section has a number of events in the works in coming months. We don’t require sophisticated knowledge of wines (though people with that talent are always welcome!) – we welcome anyone who enjoys a nice glass now and then.

MY VISIT TO JURONG FROG FARM On 16 April 2022
Written by Ralph Higgins (8) with his brother Gus Higgins (6). My visit to the Jurong frog farm with my brother was pleasantly a lot better than I assumed it would be. Entering the farm, expecting to be bored, I imagined the bulk of the day was going to be us just looking at the bullfrogs and taking in dry information. It caught me by surprise when the guide dropped some interesting information about the reason the bullfrog got its name, We all learned that this particular creature was called the bullfrog because people thought they sounded like a bull. What happened next was an unbelievable experience we would not soon forget. We got to hold and feed many frogs. And for those who have not gone to the frog farm, here is a challenge for you: I caught 54 frogs - can you get more? And while it might make many stomachs cringe, I enjoyed deep fried crocodile meat and frog with tomato ketchup to round off the amazing day at the Jurong Frog Farm.

WILLING HEARTS: A QUEST TOWARDS ZERO HUNGER On 7 May and 4 June 2022
Written by Shriya Asha Sharma (Grade 7, Canadian International School, Singapore) It was 8:00 am on a Saturday and I jumped out of bed, excited to begin my adventure at Willing Hearts. For those unaware of what Willing Hearts is, it is a charity maintained entirely by volunteers. According to the Willing Hearts website, “It operates a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks, and serves more than 11,000 daily meals to over 70 locations over the island”. The aged, disabled, low-income families, children from single-parent households or other impoverished families, and migrant workers in Singapore are all beneficiaries of the food that the volunteers prepare. We were given this meaningful opportunity to support the charity through the Singapore Cricket Club, where they asked for volunteers as part of their community outreach program. My family regularly volunteers with this charity, and we’ve always found the experience very rewarding. And this time was no different. We reached our destination and after signing in, were greeted by the lovely smell of freshly cooked food motivating us to head straight to the source of the fantastic aroma. After arriving at the packing area, we proceeded to put on our mandatory PPE (personal protective equipment) to ensure high standards of hygiene which included aprons, a hairnet and a pair of gloves. My mom and I put the PPE on straight away, eager to start helping together with the familiar volunteers we saw. My first duty was to pack the rice into the containers so that the rest of the volunteers at my station could load in the other food. At first, I found this a bit tricky as the rice was steaming hot and the proportions had to be just right. I kept at it and eventually started to get the hang of it! Sure enough, when we reached the end of packing, I learned a new skill and was quite proficient in putting the rice strategically into the containers, avoiding food wastage and over-serving. After that my mom suggested that we make our way to the vegetable area where people were washing, cutting, sorting and peeling vegetables. We found an empty spot, grabbed the carrots and started peeling! It was not long after that we decided to play a little game to see who could peel carrots the fastest and safe to say, it was a tie. I was having so much fun that I didn’t even realise three hours had gone by because as the saying goes, time flies when you are having fun! Reflecting on my experience, I truly appreciate the many fascinating aspects of Willing Hearts and how they connect to one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals - Zero Hunger. Two goals are at the forefront of this effort. The first one is the fact that the people volunteering at Willing Hearts put in a lot of time and effort to make sure the food they make is healthy, nourishing and packed with nutrients. Secondly, they also ensure that the quantity of the portions is just the right amount for someone to finish and as a result, encouraging sustainability. This practice of minimal food wastage guarantees that every last bit of food that has been produced is used for the meals. Willing Hearts also serves as a collection point for food donations - both from organizations and individuals. The volunteers at Willing Hearts make sure that all the food that is donated is put to good use and helps people in need. This is indeed “food for thought” for all of us. Knowing that there are many people around the world with limited access to sufficient and healthy food, we should consider donating to charities like Willing Hearts to pay it forward. In addition to providing food, Willing Hearts also provides trauma-related services, dentistry, traditional Chinese medicine treatment and optical care which helps their beneficiaries, as stated by the website to “Assist and guide them towards rehabilitating and reinstating themselves as useful members of our society.” I left Willing Hearts that day inspired and thrilled to have done my little part to help this organization and its noble cause. I realized that no matter who you are or what level of skill you have, you can always do your bit to help a good cause. I would say that my biggest takeaway from this experience is to never feel too shy to take action for the causes I believe in and to always help where I can as it is one of the biggest ways to contribute to the community.

The Hockey SCChool
By Kanan Packrisamy
With the summer almost fully upon us, The Hockey SCChool is approaching its first year of operations. The SCChool has had quietly been successful with 40 kids on its roster without any major marketing. We are going to complete Term 3 since inception and Term 4, when we return from summer break, will be definitely bigger and better. The Hockey SCChool is proud to announce that our U10 mixed teams did ever so well in their first official competitive outing. Both our teams finished in Gold and Silver positions in the Vesaki U10 4v4 Hockey Tournament. This delightful start has validated our training methods and we look to continue in this vein. Our coaching team has been growing and we now have on board on a full-time basis, Kishon Sagayaraja. The SCC Men’s 2s defender and NROC Level 1 coach handles our fledglings at the SCChool. Together with parent volunteer and accomplished player James Buchanan and SCC Ladies 1’s Goalkeeper Sally Aldridge, Kishon puts our 7 and under kids through their paces. We recently signed up Valerie Koh. The 21-year-old former Singapore International (she should become current soon) is a Community Coach (under assessment) and has been great with the kids. She works along myself (SCC and The Hockey SCChool Head Coach) with the 11 and older kids. Paramjit Singh, the experience NROC Senior Coach handles together with parent volunteers, Toby Gresham (SCC Hockey Section Member and weekday evening Padang enthusiast) and Rachel Flynn (SCC Ladies’ 1s captain) all the other kids in between the two groups. We are currently in negotiations to bring on board a top level coach with title winning pedigree in the national schools division to beef up our technical team to ensure The Hockey SCChool keeps scaling new heights. We have a camp slated for July on 18 to 22 July from 9 to 11am daily and then again from 3 to 5 August at the same time on the immaculate lawns of the Padang. Please drop me a note on join@ hockeyscchool.com for enquiries. See Calendar for dates! JUL / AUG 2022 THE PADANG

Ten years and counting...
The SCC Rugby Academy celebrates a decade of success on the Singapore rugby scene. By Anne-Marie Parnell
Rugby is very much back alive and kicking in Singapore despite some of our toughest months ever. The pandemic was always going to be painful for team sports – isolation just doesn’t work on a rugby pitch. But the SCC Rugby Academy is now emerging on the other side – and this is our 10th anniversary year! Thankfully enough of the year remains to celebrate. Formed in January 2012, the Academy sprung out of the desire of players from the SCC Rugby Section to pass on to their kids the love of the game. In fact, many have literally grown up at the Academy - current members like Anna Cook, Sean Shepherd, Sam Webb, Rufus Barton, Jonathan Andersen, Aran Willetts and their families joined in the Club’s first year - some of those at our first ever training session. We’ve recently said a fond farewell to Simon Etheredge and his family. Simon was one of the founders and pillars of the Academy and recently headed back to New Zealand. And who knew that ten years on after taking their kids for a kick about on day one, Academy President Richard Cook and Academy Directors Marc Lansonneur and Clare Ferguson would still be involved, as well as Sarah Finley, who never wants to use the word ‘pod’ again! There’s been massive input from many other families too and each has left their indelible mark on the Club and we hope, in return, the Academy on them. They have helped make our dream a reality – a Club offering top quality rugby, touch and girls contact rugby training – to more than 500 kids across Singapore, striving to be a leading club in Southeast Asia. It’s been a decade of sad goodbyes too as inevitably Academy families have come and gone in the ebb and flow of life - many will enjoy the sport for the rest of their lives, for some it will be their lives - like Orson James who started on day one of the Academy - he now plays Wales U18. A mix of locals and expats, the Academy attracts kids from around 100 different schools across Singapore. One of our fastest growing sections is among our girls - with strong leadership and coaching building excellent Touch and contact Rugby teams over the last few years.

Other achievements that have helped our rugby community to grow is our Scholarship Scheme whereby local talented players are funded to hone their skills and represent the Academy. The Academy’s 7s tournament is always one of the highlights of our year held on the Padang and we hope to be hosting this year. We also can’t wait to tour again -- KL and other tournaments are indented on many a player’s memory. One Academy highlight some coaches may want to forget was the (semi) nude Coaches Calender of 2018 which proved (still not sure why) a popular charity fundraiser. Our Director of Rugby, Brendan Nolan, is looking forward to the future. “I’ve always said the Academy is not just about winning trophies but creating an environment to help develop and guide young men and women. I’d like to see further investment and growth in our girls’ Touch and Rugby - this is a key area not just for us but for world rugby. I’m also looking forward to us competing in the regional tournaments again. There’s nothing like the excitement of going on tour and getting the Academy on the regional scene. There are many exciting times still to come!” Painful though the pandemic was, it's very much a game on at Dempsey. This year will be one of celebration for the SCC Rugby Academy in more ways than one. www.sccrugbyacademy.com Rugby U4-U17 Touch U10-U18

Balut
Convenor: Vashi Sajnani | Article by: Anwar Gaffoor
MONTHLY SECTION GAMES In April, the Balut Section held an afternoon session on 16 April with the following results: • Champion: Rolv Stokkmo with 653 points • Runner Up: Roland Pereira with 644 points Taking honour for the lowest score was none other than our illustrious Convenor Vashi Sajnani with 461 points. Congratulations to Rolv and Roland with their impressive scores. For May, we had a weekday Section night on 10 May and it was the first time after a long while when food could be served before the game. We had a very good three-course sit-down dinner prior to the games and kudos to Section Committee Member Soma Devi for arranging the selection of soup, main and dessert; her selections were spot on. Results for May are as follows: • Champion: A N Balagopal with a very impressive 686 points • Runner Up: Geoff Mullet with 643 points Lowest score for May went to Mageswari (Mahes) Velupillai with 444 points Well done to Bala, as achieving 686 points over six rounds is no mean feat indeed! And felicitations to Geoff as well. Members may recollect that Mahes was the joint champion in February with Else and now she is the lowest for May. This is the surprise and fun of Balut where you can be champion one month and lowest the next. In case non-Baluteers are wondering why we mention lowest scorer, it is not to embarrass them but only because Balut is one game where the lowest scorer is also recognized and given a “booby” prize which is actually not bad item to receive – a miniature whisky bottle. Meanwhile the champion receives a full whisky bottle and the runner up a bottle of wine. For games in July to September, we are considering alternative venues at the Club since the window replacement renovations for Padang Restaurant and Gilmour Room will commence in June over three months. Members will be notified when arrangements have been finalized. The Section Committee is intending to have the games alternate between a weeknight one month and a Saturday afternoon the next month.
INTERCLUB BALUT TOURNAMENT 2022 After two years, this much awaited Interclub Tournament was revived with SRC hosting the first game on 25 May at their premises. A total of six clubs including newcomers Khalsa Association participated with 17 teams or 68 players in all. Khalsa may be new in name but their Baluteers are from Indian Association which has pulled out of this competition.

What a splendid start for SCC as three out of our four teams took the top three positions: • Champions: Team 3 with Huned, Fahmida, Manoo and Tony scoring 2,414 points • Second place: Team 2 with Raj, Anwar, Rolv and Else scoring 2,347 points • Third place: Team 1 with Vashi, Yasmin, Foo Yong and Jasmine scoring 2,344 points Convenor Vashi also bagged honours for the highest total score of 657 points followed by Manoo with 655 points. Tony trailed with 637 followed by Anwar with 607 points and Rosemary with 596 points. We can’t ask for a better start than this and we hope this lead and momentum will continue in the rounds to come. Due to overwhelming response for participation in this Tournament, our Captain has decided the four lowest scorers in the first round will have to sit it out for the second game and those on the reserve list will take their place. This will be done for each game on a revolving basis and amended by the Captain as and when the situation calls for it.
SARAWAK CLUB INVITATIONAL BALUT We received an invitation from The Sarawak Club in Kuching to participate in the 6th Invitational Inter-Club Balut Competition 2022 on 22 - 23 July at their Clubhouse. Members who have been to this annual invite which was last held in 2019 will remember it is a very enjoyable gathering of Clubs from Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore. At the time of this report, the Section Committee is working out relevant tour and cost details before calling for Members to participate.

BOWLS SINGAPORE NATIONAL PAIRS 2022 After eight weekends of Bowling activities, the Bowls Singapore National Pairs 2022 held at SCC Bowling Green concluded with the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and Finals for Men’s and Ladies taking place during the weekend of 28 - 29 May 2022. All teams gave their best efforts throughout the tournament and with that, we saw four of our very own SCC teams finishing on the podium! On the Ladies’ side, Shermeen Lim and Amira Goh emerged as the Champion of Bowls Singapore National Pairs 2022. Both players will represent Singapore in the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, United Kingdom from 28 July to 8 August. We also had Jenny Chew and Josephine Sarbo as well as Mary Lim and Rosemary Tessensohn finishing joint third in the tournament. On the Men’s side, we witnessed Christian Huang and Melvin Tan hailing a nail-biting exciting finale and scoring themselves a Silver finish. Great job to all who have participated in this tournament! And to all, good and happy bowling!

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH NEWBIES WINNER: KELVIN TEO How did you persevere through the many rounds of the newbies tournament? Trying new experience. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Maintain optimism.
What were your most memorable moments? Winning my first SCC Mixed Drawn Pairs Plate Final partnering with Shermeen Lim when I was a newbie in bowls and Amira giving me a set of her Henselite Classic II bowls. They were both nurturing and caring mentors who encouraged me to pick up the game and to excel.
What do you enjoy most about Bowls? Making new friends in the Section and especially getting together to drink and chat after bowling. That includes 4km to 6km of walking exercise during bowls.
Any bowling philosophy? Don’t expect anything and you won’t be disappointed.
Any advice for newcomers? Have positive attitude. Listen and learn.
Newbies Finalist Marianne and winner Kelvin at the competition on 14 April 2022.
Remember BLCCF: Understand your BOWLS. Know your LINE. CONTROL your Weight. Maintain your CONSISTENCY. Keep your FOCUS.
UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH MIXED TRIPLES SKIP OF WINNING TEAM: JOSEPHINE SARBO How did your team persist and persevere till the finals? First of all, this tournament is to try incorporating new bowlers to the game. Let them feel the excitement and draw them to love the game. With that in mind, I tried my best to encourage them on to love the game and to love us.
What would some of the most memorable moments be for you? The most memorable moments would be to see the new bowlers getting the hang of the game and wanting to play more tournaments.
What do you love most about bowls? The friendship, the travel and the celebrations after winning or losing after game.
What is your philosophy?
bowling
No one wants to play bad bowls so tell yourself to correct on the next bowl. When you are down, make sure your bowls must reach the head. Tell yourself to cut down the number of shots to give away. Tell yourself you can do it.
Any advice for new bowlers? Keep practicing the draw shot - The line, the weight and bank on the luck you may have.
Mixed triples finalists Alan, Kelvin and Albert with the winners Menon, Jo and Susan on 4 June 2022.

Hockey
Convenor: Subhas Nathan | Article by: Julian Michael
Since our last update, we’ve had some proper hockey to report on. Our U19 boys’ and girls’ teams have competed in the SHF’s season-opening leagues and have both come out as champions. The Club has its first double of the year. Will more titles find their way to the famed trophy cabinets of the SCC? The Hockey Liga season, a 9-a-side variant of the regular game with 25-minute halves, is largely used by teams as a tune-up for the national leagues. Our men’s 3rd XIs opened their Liga campaign on Saturday, 28 May 2022. They put in a stellar performance to beat Orient 5-1 and on Sunday, 29 May 2022 we got past Tornados 5-0. Their last outing was on 5 June 2022, where they were leading 1-0 against Hockey Innovative before a lightning alert put a damper on the potential barrage of goals that was to follow the opener. Meanwhile, our Men’s 2s opened their MHL2 league campaign in the sweltering heat at Sengkang Sports Complex. They were beaten 4-0 by SRC who boasted players from their previous MHL1 squad after the Padang club pulled out of the top flight. Our Ladies’ 2s too were on the wrong side of a 4-1 scoreline against Crescent Hockey club, who will be looking to return to the top flight following their relegation in 2019. Our Ladies’ and Men’s 1st XIs will begin the defence of their 2019 titles on Saturday 11 June 2022 against the Hollandse Club and Tornados respectively. Yes, it’s been that long since we’ve had some proper hockey but we’re finally back. Look out for updates from Coach Kanan and social secretary Abi on fixtures if you want to make your way to Sengkang on the weekends to show your support. Moving on to some grass hockey news. One 1 June 2002, we hosted some of the sailors from the HMS Spey of the British Royal Navy to an 11-a-side hockey game. Since these seamen did not plan on playing any hockey during their travels, we kitted them out with plenty of spare sticks. This would probably explain the final scoreline of 10 – 1 in favour of the Club in which we fielded a mixed team. It was a great evening of fun and the social after was better. We even organised a boat race to even the challenge. Unfortunately for the Navy men and ladies our team of Jeyaputra P, Paul , Janice T and Gabriel Y drank their way to sink the HMS Spey’s boat! At the time of writing, on the same weekend as our 1st XIs embark on title defences, our Section will field a football team to play in

the InterSection category of the SCC Soccer 7s 2022 tournament. Hopefully we will be boasting of a footy cup win too in our next edition. Finally, the not-so-great news. We bid farewell to Adrian Cowell and Paul Topfer, the former being a long-serving member of the Section and the latter, a (relatively) recent arrival who is currently serving as the men’s social secretary. Perhaps they’ll return sometime soon with teams for the hockey sixes? We’ll keep you updated on that front.

The moment has arrived! The SCC Annual Golf Championship (“AGC”) will be played at the Sentosa Golf Club, Serapong Course on 24 June 2022. At the time of writing this article I am glad to say that the response has been amazing. This year’s AGC promises to be the best yet with attractive Holein-One prizes including a cash component of S$10,000 and a Mercedes-Benz E200 Avantgarde. All players will attend for lunch at the Sentosa Golf Club prior to tee-off and a after-game dinner of fun, music and dance at The Padang Restaurant at SCC. Prizes for the AGC division winners and runners-up including the Overall Champion will be presented at the dinner. We will conduct the traditional lucky draw during the dinner and look forward to seeing our Members in attendance. A number of events were held by the Golf Section during the months of May and June. We had our first Members’ Evening at The Padang Restaurant on 13 May 2022. It was a fun filled night attended by many of our Section Members including spouses. During dinner we had the band “Vibes” playing yester year songs that brought back nostalgic memories of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Naturally a number of Section Members proved to be crooners of some calibre, essentially making the night an amateur hour session. Kudos to our Section Members for a night of fun and entertainment. On 27 May 2022, we had a social game cum dinner at the Changi Golf Club (“CGC”). Naturally, we had a full turn up and support and a good day of socialising and chatter over dinner. We have a packed calendar for the months of June and July at the time of writing. The Padang Shield is back with our traditional rivals, the Singapore Recreation Club. We are the host this year

FRIENDLY WITH THE CHINESE SWIMMING CLUB Back in the pre-pandemic years, the Singapore Cricket Club Squash Section frequently hosted and attended friendly squash matches with other clubs’ squash teams. Recently, we were able to start having these friendlies again. Resumption of friendly matches were much welcomed by our players. Our Squash Section had a friendly match with the Chinese Swimming Club. The turnout was fantastic and our players enjoyed great games all round. In the finally tally, SCC won 9-2 against the CSC.
FAREWELL FOR ADRIAN All good things must come to an end, but the Squash Section was definitely not ready to let Adrian go without a proper farewell! Dinner, drinks and some squash games were lined up for the farewell. While the wide smiles in the photos already speak volumes about how well-liked Adrian is in the Squash Section, we also had Rahul, our Squash Section convenor, to share a few words in tribute to Adrian: “How time flies? It’s been 16 years that Adrian has been with SCC and it’s time to say goodbye to him. There are so many fond memories but if I were to summarise the best of Adrian in one sentence, it would be “Great Uncle Captain”.To someone who doesn’t know him, they won’t understand what each of these words mean but they do mean a lot on their own. “When I say Great, it means that Adrian is leaving behind a great legacy where he truly built a cohesive grade E team that had the widest age difference between the players. At one end, we had a few 13 year olds and on the other, Adrian himself. This team was not to be taken lightly and in 2018 the team proved it by winning the League Challenge Cup by beating teams far stronger than them. “When I say Uncle, Adrian really was the uncle who would nurture and guide you both before and during the matches. Even if you played a horrible match, he would still write such glorious accounts of your match in his post-match summary that you felt that you must do better the next time you were selected. “As captain, he was always impeccable in his communications with the team as well as the opponents. He would also arrange for the team to come together and have a hit. He truly believed in the concept of team even though Squash is an individual sport. He would be present for all matches, whether playing or not, and constantly egging the players on. “As he leaves the sunny shores of Singapore for the grey and gloomy skies of UK, I do hope that whenever he longs for a ray of sunshine, he remembers Singapore and with it, the time he spent with us at SCC. We’ll miss you Adrian!”
