As you read this, you would also be seeing the lights and barriers going up around the Clubhouse – an indication that the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix is nearing. We are excited to be organising the SCC Night Race again – our tickets sold out within minutes of opening, and our staff are working hard to bring you a fun weekend of exciting action, excellent hospitality and Anotherentertainment.majorevent the Club will be hosting the SCC International Rugby7s Tournament . So far, we’ve confirmed international teams from New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Japan and Malaysia, and look to have a final team list soon. The tournament organising committee has also now opened bookings for corporate hospitality packages and there are also branding opportunities available – there are limited slots for corporate hospitality, so do book them early by emailing scc7s@scc.org.sg.
On Saturday, 13 August, the Club established two new Sections, the Mahjong Section and the Chess Section . These new Sections were principally member-driven initiatives through the Member Engagement Subcommittee and are in step with creating more opportunities and touch points to the Club for the wider membership. The initial responses to the events organised by the Sections have been highly encouraging. Dear Members, A significant highlight for the Club was the gazetting of the Padang as a national monument on National Day 2022. Below is the Club’s statement as reported in the Straits Times:
The Singapore Cricket Club has been privileged to have been allowed to use the iconic Padang these 170 years. Apart from the many significant national social, community and sports events, the Padang has been the site of many of our marquee events –including the world’s second oldest Rugby7s tournament, the SCC International Rugby7s, as well as our international Hockey, Football and Cricket tournaments.
Our Sports Sections have been back in full force with their training and activities, and winning performances in local and overseas competitions. Most recently, our Junior Sports Members Justin Yap and Ong Zhe Sim were named SG Squash Junior Athlete of the Year in the boys’ and girls’ categories. Bowls won the National Triples with the team of captain Edmund, Bryan and 11-year old Arman – read our special feature on Arman and the Bowls Sections Members who have been coaching and mentoring him. Team Singapore emerged as Champion of the Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy and have been promoted to the Asia Rugby Sevens Series – congratulations to the SCC Rugby players who represented Singapore and Suhaimi Amran - the National Teams’ Head Coach for both Singapore Men’s and Women’s Rugby team. The National Women’s Rugby team also emerged as the Champion in this tournament, which meant a double Gold under Suhaimi’s Ourcoaching!SCCLadies and U15 Girls Teams also shone in the Pesta Sukan Hockey 5s Tournament and won in their respective categories; the Hockey SCChool finished with a Bronze in the Mixed U12s as did our U15 Boys and U19 Girls, while our Masters finished with a Silver.
SCC Club life has certainly returned to full force these weeks, and we look forward to racing through the last quarter and coming up tops. Join us for the many events activities we have lined up for you, and partake of the delectable dining options specially curated for your pleasure – see you at the Club!
Over the next two months, the Rugby Section will play their inter-port match in Kuala Lumpur; the Golf Section will be headed to Kuala Lumpur and Kluang for their inter-port matches; Snooker & Billiards will be headed to Kuala Lumpur; Netball will be playing matches in Bali and the Squash Section will be competing in the 26th edition of the Triangular Cup in early November in Kolkata.
We appreciate your patience during this period too while we are in the midst of our windows replacement project. There was a slight unforeseen logistical delay that was not within our control but the renovations have been progressing well. While they continue, our F&B department has been looking again into our product and service offerings; look out for more information about our revamped menus and some new services soon!

SCC Netball teams also did well in the National League 2022, with SCC Eagles winning Champions for Division 5B, while SCC Ospreys won 2nd position for Division 7A. In the Football Sport Cares Hearts 5-a-side Tournament, SCC NFL were the Men’s Champions while our young SCC WNFL did well as the Women’s second runner up. SCC won the Mixed Doubles title in the Tennis Interclub Knockout Tournament and retained the Overall Championship title. With travelling opening up, the highly popular Sections’ tours are in full swing. SCC emerged as the overall Runners up in 6th Invitation Balut Tournament organised by The Sarawak Club. Tennis and Squash won their inter-port matches against Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Tennis won the challenge trophy against The British Club Bangkok. The Rugby section had tours to Phuket and Ho Chi Minh.
GENERAL ROAD CLOSURE
• St Andrews Road / Parliament Place – There will be no vehicular access into the Club from Wednesday, 28 September 0000hrs to Tuesday, 4 October 0530hrs.
• St Andrews Road / Parliament Place will be fully accessible from Tuesday, 4 October, 0530hrs onwards.
• Pedestrian access will be available on 30 September to 2 October via Gate 4 located near the Asian Civilisations Museum.
• Taxis may continue to call at the following taxi stands: i. Capitol Piazza ii. Peninsula Excelsior Hotel iii. Funan Mall iv. Battery Road v. Hitachi Tower along Collyer Quay as well as others not listed here
• Members who plan to drive are advised to exit the Clubhouse on Tuesday, 27 September, by 2300hrs before the road closure commences.
SCC NIGHT RACE TICKET HOLDERS
Road Closure Roads around the 2022 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix circuit will close from 0000hrs on Wednesday, 28 September 2022 (two days before the race) until Tuesday, 4 October 2022 at 0530hrs (two days after the race).
• As the Singapore Cricket Club is located within the circuit park, access to the Club will only be permitted for SCC Night Race ticket holders from Friday, 30 September to Sunday, 2 October.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
• Access to alternative taxi stands is subject to prevailing traffic conditions.

Partial (2 lanes) Cricket Nets closed from 12 September to end October. Multi-Purpose Court closed from 22 September to 6 October. Strictly no access to Cricket Nets.
• Members without the SCC Night Race ticket and membership card will not be permitted entry into the Club at all times, including after the race timing.
• Sports Facilities will be closed on the following dates: Padang closed from 12 September to end October. Strictly NO ACCESS to Clubhouse from Padang field and vice versa, due to pre-event construction and tear-down of the 2022 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix. Heavy traffic by way of heavy goods vehicles and other associated machineries can be expected onto and out of the Padang field from St Andrews Road and Connaught Drive respectively.

Appreciating our Senior Marker, Mr. Sabidullah Bin Osman After almost 30 years of service to the Singapore Cricket Club since he joined on 12 April 1993, our senior marker Mr. Sabidullah Bin Osman officially retired on 31 July 2022. A special presentation ceremony was held at the Men’s Bar to present a SCC Plaque to Osman in appreciation of his dedication to the Club. In attendance were Club President Mr. Zoher Motiwalla who presented the plaque to Osman, past Club President Mr. Manu Bhojwani, Billiards & Snooker Section Convenor Mr. David Yim and many Section Members who came to personally thank him. General Manager David Jones and Osman’s colleagues from the Sports & Recreation Department were also present to celebrate his long career with us.

The Padang was officially gazetted as Singapore’s 75th National Monument on 9 August 2022, making it the first green, open space to join the country’s list of National Monuments. The iconic site is a social and community space that has borne witness to many significant national events, and today, continues to serve as a venue for recreation and sporting events. In view of its strong national, historical and social significance, the Padang has been preserved and accorded the highest level of protection in Singapore under the Preservation of Monuments Act. With the gazette, the character and appearance of the Padang will be preserved for future generations, while ensuring all current uses can continue.
The gazette of the Padang as a National Monument will protect it, as it is now, from alteration and change which would affect its character and significance, while allowing it to continue to be a social and community space enjoyed by Singaporeans.”
The Padang stands out amidst the other edifices surrounding it in the Civic District as well as the larger commercial core of the city centre in its south-west. It has been retained as an open green space despite the many development changes in its vicinity since Singapore’s colonial days. It is also bordered by several National Monuments all around its perimeter – the Cenotaph, Lim Bo Seng Memorial, Tan Kim Seng Fountain along one of its longer sides, the Former City Hall, Former Supreme Court and Saint Andrew's Cathedral on the other, as well as the Civilian War Memorial and Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall at either end of its shorter sides. The historic site is associated with key milestones in Singapore’s history, including the victory parade celebrating the formal surrender of the Japanese in Singapore on 12 September 1945; the victory rally of the first fully elected Legislative Assembly on 3 June 1959; the installation of Mr Yusof Ishak as the first Malayan-born Yang di-Pertuan Negara (head of state) and the unveiling of National Symbols on 3 December 1959; as well as the inaugural National Day Parade on 9 August 1966.

The Padang is also one of Singapore’s oldest spaces for public recreation and celebrations, and hosted sporting events during the colonial period such as New Year’s day sports and cricket matches. Celebrations for royal birthdays, jubilees, coronations, Lunar New Year, Thaipusam and the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday have also been held there. Today, the Padang continues to function as a key recreation and commemorative space for members of all communities, hosting major sporting events such as the Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby Sevens and serving as the starting and end-point of the Singapore Marathon.
The Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) and Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) sit on either ends of the Padang, and are key community stakeholders involved in the maintenance and use of the site. Mr Zoher Motiwalla, President of the SCC, said, “The gazette has been long overdue in recognising the Padang’s position as the site of many significant national events, and its importance as one of the roots of our country’s history and heritage. The SCC has been privileged to have been a part of the Padang since we were established in 1852, and to have been able to witness Singapore’s growth and development around the field into a sovereign nation and our home.
The gazette was officiated by Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, who was present to preview some of the commemorative initiatives which will be launched in conjunction with the gazette. Minister Tong said, “The Padang will be the first green, open space to join our list of National Monuments. Together with our 74 other National Monuments, it preserves and celebrates the stories that define Singapore and our people. Generations of people have gathered here and witnessed key milestones in Singapore’s history. It stands as a testament to Singapore’s historical journey, anchoring our Singaporean identity and reflecting our place in the world.

Together with our 74 other National Monuments, it will contribute to the architectural and cultural diversity of our nation’s built heritage, and be celebrated as one of the many places that define Singapore and our people.”

Some evidence suggests that the Padang could have been the site of negotiations between the British East India Company and the Sultan of Johore and Temenggong leading up to the eventual signing of the treaty on 6 February 1819 which allowed the establishment of the settlement of Singapore.
• A demonstration by 500 students of Nanyang University protesting perceived government bias against Nanyang University and its leader, Tan Lark Sye, on 7 October 1963.
• The declaration of merger with the Federation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963.
It was a key commemorative space for people to gather and participate as witnesses to key milestones in Singapore history. These included:
• The victory rally of the elected legislative council after Singapore was granted internal self-governance on 3 June 1959.
The installation of Yusof bin Ishak as the Yang di Pertuan Negara of Singapore and introduction of the state flag, coat of arms and national anthem on 3 December 1959.

• Today, besides cricket, other sporting events including the Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby Sevens, and the starting and end-point of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon are at the Padang. In addition, the Singapore Grand Prix circuit passes the Padang en route to Anderson Bridge and the Esplanade.

It is an easy-to-learn sport and it is fun as well. It is a sport which is not so fast pacedbut it helps me improve my fitness and coordination.
This was a great moment of joy and pride for the Club and the Bowls Section, especially Arman’s contribution to the win as it is a sweet fruit borne out of the Section’s devoted mentorship of this energetic and dedicated boy.
In December 2020, when SCC held a series of sports clinics in partnership with SportCares, one of the kids who participated in the Bowls clinic was Arman, then nine years old. Even though it was his first experience with lawn bowls, Arman was very focused and enthusiastic about understanding the sport and eager to learn. By the end of the clinic, it was clear to the Bowls Section Member mentors that he had a lot of potential! The Section worked with SportCares, Arman’s mother, and the Club to explore how it could support Arman and his desire to learn and play bowls and on 7 June 2021, Arman officially became a SCC Junior Sports Members and started training with the Club. In this issue, we speak to Arman and his mentor-coaches, Rosemary Tessensohn and Ganesh Ramanathan, and Bowls captain Edmund Lin:
During training I enjoyed learning how to roll the ball as the lawn bowl ball isdifferent from a usual ball - the lawn bowl ball is not proportional so it was somethinginteresting for me - and also getting all the knowledge from my mentors about thegame. The most difficult feeling was when I started, I could not get my ball as closeto the jack and so it was frustrating. How did you feel during the National Triples competition?

Through the National Pairs, we already learnt that Arman is ready for the bigger stage, but just lacks a bit of composure. His mentor and pairs partner, Ganesh, humbly suggested to Edmund that Arman needs someone more experienced in the game to guide him through the triples. As part of Edmund's role in developing the sport in high performance for Singapore, he took Arman into his team with his National Pairs partner Bryan Lim. Edmund and Bryan had previous progressed into the knockout stages in the National Pairs when COVID-19 cruelly struck Edmund and ended their run in the competition.
In Edmund's mind, winning or losing is not a factor. With a team that included two relatively new bowlers (Bryan also started playing a little more than one year ago), the team naturally became a dark horse in the National Triples. With a lack of expectation, and some supreme teamwork within the team, they managed to overcome their deficiencies and surpassed all expectations by winning the whole thing altogether. An unbelievable feat against an experienced group of players in the competition, many of whom represented Singapore on different occasions! When it comes to the ceiling for both Bryan and Arman, it is indeed limitless. ARMAN:
Firstly, I want to thank Rosemary the most as she taught me a lot and guided methrough how the sport is played and gave me a lot of knowledge. Secondly, I want tothank Ganesh who was very encouraging and taught me patiently with his guidance.Thirdly, I want to thank Edmund who gave me the opportunity to join and learn thissport, and his encouragement throughout the National Triples also motivated me alot. I would also like to thank my other teammate Bryan for pushing me when I didnot do well during the games and giving me advice along the way. Lastly, I want tothank SCC for giving me all the opportunities that the Club has offered me and allthe training I received. How were the representatives for the National Triples selected? Why was Arman one of the chosen?
When you first started training, what did you like most and what didyou feel was most difficult?
To be honest I was nervous as it was my first time taking part in the NationalTriples. During my first few rounds, I lost a few games in the beginning and was abit disappointed but my teammates were very encouraging and I tried my best formy team. How did you feel when you won? I was extremely happy and proud of what I had achieved. Super excited to have won.
WINNING FORMULA FOR BOWLS MENTORSHIP
His training program is taken care of by Ganesh and Rosemary for the time being, and Ganesh has recently taken more ownership of it. However, when he first joined as a JSM, we sent to his mother our plan to develop him into a top player over a three-year period. The particular milestone of playing in National Competitions (15 months target achieved within timeframe) was achieved when he partnered Ganesh in the National Pairs. Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out in qualification to the knockout stages by finishing third in their group (top 2 qualifies).
What do you like about Bowls?
In late July 2022, SCC won the National Triples with the golden team of Edmund Lin, Bryan Lim, and eleven-year-old Arman Tahar – one of, if not the youngest to win a Bowls competition in Singapore!
Who planned his training program?
Arman now at 11 years old with Rosemary and Ganesh.
Training programme: Because of his school timings, curriculum schedule and other commitments, he could only come down on Thursday afternoons. The training time was set for 5pm – 7 pm. Training for beginners in bowls basically involves getting the line and weight correct. For a 10 year old like Arman, it was important to let him enjoy playing and not get bored. As Rosemary had laid a good foundation for him, I basically continued to get him to be more consistent with his line and weight control, to see that he is not bored and has some fun while playing. Why did you decide to be involved in Arman’s training?
Between July to September 2021, there were more newcomers joining the SCC Bowls Section and Rosemary had more newbies under her wings to coach. I offered to help her to coach Arman. The day and time generally suited me. I started to coach Arman on 9 September 2021. We bonded quite easily as he knew me from earlier. The main reason I wanted to be involved was that he was the first youngster in many years who showed interest in Bowls. We needed younger players, at the Club and at the national level. So when he showed interest, I was happy to be involved in his training and development in the sport.
Challenges: The attention span of children in his age group is limited. They need to take breaks, take time to understand instructions, take their time to do things, and they can get distracted etc. Arman was a typical 10 year old. Those are the challenging parts. Fortunately, Rosemary kept an eye on us and reminded me to cut him some slack while at the same time be firm with him. Given his young age and that he was coming to SCC after school, I understood the limitations, and basically just tried to get him to enjoy the sport. Over the past year, he is now more disciplined.

What have been the challenges and rewards for you mentoring Arman?
How has Arman grown since he started playing Bowls, both as a player andyoung man?
Training and mentoring young players are important for the transition of the younger playersto replace the older players who eventually retire. The young are physically and mentally veryalert and pick the skills of the game fast. Training them can promote personal and professionaldevelopment and high performance. Mentoring can help youngsters go through challenginglife transitions. It creates trusted relationships and realistic goals. They can be taught goodbehaviour, both social and emotional and positive attitudes. The results after the training aremost encouraging and very rewarding as a coach.
Rewards: I could see that he was trying, and most important was that he continues to be interested in the sport. This inspired me to come down regularly to coach / play with him. And it gave me a sense of satisfaction to be playing a part in grooming one of the next generation of Bowls players. To keep him engaged in the sport, I partnered Arman in the National Pairs (Men’s) competition in April this year. We won two games, drew one game and lost 2 games and finished third out of five teams in the group. Not surprisingly, he was happy when we won and upset when we lost. But he understood that this was just a start. And now with the National Triples (Men’s) competition, Edmund together with Bryan has given Arman another experience in playing competitive bowls. It has come to a nice circle because it was Edmund who was Arman’s first coach during that day on 4 December 2020! And we hope this circle will continue and I’ll continue to be a part of his development in bowls.

Bowlers learn a skill, positive attitude, discipline, mental toughness, teamwork, and fitness. Theenjoyment from the game is derived from social interaction and is a great way for players tobond and form many lasting friendships.
Q&A WITH GANESH: What was the training program planned for Arman?
I first met Arman on 4 December 2020 when he came as part of a group from SportCares to try out Bowls at SCC. At the end of the session, he informed the person in-charge of his group that he had a good time playing Bowls, and she informed us. I was then the Convenor of the SCC Bowls Section and Edmund was the Captain. Together, we followed up to get him to sign up as a Junior Section Member (JSM) of the SCC Bowls Section. For years, the Section has been trying to get younger ones to pick up the sport of Bowls, with little success. So when Arman showed interest, we were not going to let it slip. For various reasons, it took a while, but he was eventually registered as a Bowls Section JSM on 7 June 2021. Rosemary was initially tasked to coach him, and she started with him in July 2021.
Q&A WITH ROSEMARY:
Edmund Lin of the Lawn Bowls Section introduced Arman to the game through a SportCaresProgram. Ever since then his interest has never wavered. He loves a challenge and is keen indeveloping his abilities and potential. His concentration and his understanding of the game hasimproved tremendously. He is persistent and hardworking. He has matured into a confidentyoung man in the last year. He is comfortable playing in teams with older players and is alwaysopen to advice on his game. He wants to represent Singapore in future competitions and knowswhat he has to do to achieve his goal.

TANGLIN GIN DISTILLERY TOUR
Members learned how to trace, cut, saddle-stitch and assemble leather goods, and how to care for them. The enjoyable workshop ensured members brought their own leather masterpiece, with their names embossed on them, home at the end.
Members had the opportunity to peek inside the Tanglin Creations Lab and learned about Tanglin Gin and the process of how it’s made. The tour finished with a tasting of Gin & Tonic Cocktails, plus some tips on choosing the appropriate garnishes to enhance the taste of each cocktail.

The Wine Circle organized a Barbeque evening on 30 July at the STUMPS Terrace which was a lot of fun and experienced good participation. During the evening, one of the Wine Circle members – Rajeev Malhotra was gifted a bottle of wine for referring five new members under the Member-get-member referral programme run by the Circle. He is the secnd winner of the award. (photo on right)
Another interesting discovery of his visit was the Pride Mountain Vineyards, on the border between Napa and Sonoma, which must sell wine under two different appellations and even keep two different sets of books!

In this issue, we’re highlighting winery visits by a couple of Section Members: “Rags” Raghavan and Laura Goddard.
Laura made a surprise visit to see her mum in the UK who in turn ended up turning the tables and surprising her back with a visit to a winery in Yorkshire. “I have been a big fan of English sparkling wine for years, but even I wasn’t expecting still wines from the north of English to show so much potential,” Laura said.
Champagne’s famous limestone soils are part of a “chalk seam” that stretches as far north as Yorkshire. In a tiny hamlet near Driffield, Laura visited Laurel Vines, a vineyard that’s growing classics like Chardonnay and Pinot Nero as well as diseaseresistant crossbreeds like Solaris.
Rags celebrated the reopening of travel by visiting the Napa and Sonoma wine regions in California. At Robert Craig Winery in the Russian River Valley, the hosts were most gracious and poured liberal quantities of wine. At The Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars (not to be confused with Stag’s Leap Winery) Rags experienced an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon.
A red blend of Pinot and Rondo reminded her of a mountain wine or even a youthful Bardolino or Valpolicella. As climate change comes to Europe, the evolution of UK wines has been interesting indeed.

For July, we arranged an alternative social game at NUSS Kent Ridge Guild House on 13 July. The premises at Kent Ridge were recently renovated and we had a very enjoyable evening with our good friends from NUSS. This match was a friendly game so the scores do not count towards our annual in-house championship; the results are:
We had a record-breaking 39 Members and guests for the monthly game held on 14 June which included guest of honour Sam Sharp, Chairman Games Control Board. Sam came to find out what Balut is all about and after a quick coaching session, gamely stayed on for all six rounds. It was evident he enjoyed the game as the evening wore on. He didn’t do badly too as a beginner and came in nineth position. We look forward to having you with us again, Sam, and we hope your interest in Balut will be sustained.

• For individual scores, our best scorer was Rolv in fourth placing with 839 points. Scores aside, a great time was held by all. Sarawak Club did very well in the organization of the games, the food and ample liquid refreshments and entertainment at the prize giving dinner.
The icing on the cake was an announcement that The Kinabalu Club will organize this Invitational in 2023 at Kota Kinabalu. And topping off that announcement was another one made that The British Club Bangkok has agreed to host the 2022 Interport in Bangkok come 25 -26 November.

So we have a couple of overseas matches to look forward to; Members will be further notified as and when more details become available. Thanks to Sunita and Soma for donating respectively a whisky and a wine bottle for this game. The Section also contributed four bottles of wine which were matched by NUSS and allowed for a wider range of prizes to be awarded that night. We look forward to making this an annual event between the two clubs and we will keep Members posted once we have finalized plans to reciprocate and host NUSS.
SARAWAK CLUB INVITATIONAL BALUT
INTERCLUB BALUT TOURNAMENT 2022 Round Two was also held at SRC but hosted by Eurasian Association on 29 June. Despite a very good start in the first round, we stumbled in this second round and could only manage a fourth placing by our Team 1. NUSS took the top two positions followed by Khalsa in third place. As mentioned, only our Team 1 managed fourth placing while our three other teams came in last. Our players who did well in Round Two are:

Our contingent of 15 players had a very enjoyable and memorable time in Kuching on 22 - 23 July for this annual Invitational Inter-Club Balut Competition. It was special coming as it is after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. A total of 84 players representing nine clubs from Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore participated in over eight rounds.

Congratulations to Glenn Yeo for wining the National Billiards Championship in February. The tournament was played in ROSSA and Glenn played well to beat Alex Puan 2-0 in a best of 3 final. Our Section AGM was held on 25 Feb and we had a good turnout and lively discussion over how Men’s Bar should evolve after the COVID-19 relaxation rules kick in. The elected Section Members areDavid Yim, Tan Bak Choon, GP Yap, Peter Gilchrist, Jason Teo and Jason Tan. We wish to welcome our new Marker Winston Tang who has joined the Club
The Padang Shield match was a closely fought event. The format was three singles and two doubles. SRC started well and won the first singles 2-0 against Peter Gilchrist. Glenn bounced back with a draw 1-1 in the second singles. Then we took the next two doubles 2-0 with Gerard Ee / Clive Cheong and Matthew Lim / Tom Bilyard. The score stood a 5-3 in favour of SCC in the 10-frame event. We needed one more frame to win the match and Jason Tan secured it with a 2-0 win in his singles match.
The final score was 7-3 for SCC. Well played guys! Thanks to all the Section Members behind the scenes who helped make the event a success. That same evening, we had a surprise visit from Joseph Schooling who tried his hand at Snooker.

We had a group of nine players and supporters from SCC that made our way to Bangkok. It was good to see so many familiar faces after a two-year break due to the pandemic; RBSC and RBSC Polo last visited SCC in 2019. We played a series of singles and doubles matches on Saturday and were treated to a wonderful RBSCdinner. and RBSC Polo will be visiting us in 2023. Our next upcoming event include the 6 Red Tournament in Lake Club, Kuala Lumpur, on 16 September.

When I formed this team, I communicated a very important message to the team that the key is to do our best and enjoy the game. The results were secondary, although we were confident of getting past the group stages given that the top four of each group qualifies.
Always stay humble and keep learning from more experienced players. As you become established enough, remember what you have benefitted from in terms of guidance and pay it forward. The Bowls scene can only prosper if there are more participants and thus we become more competitive collectively as a nation.
To conclude, with no expectations, good team spirit and a nothing-to-lose attitude really got us through. Now, we can happily declare that Arman at the age of 11 is part of the team that is the current National Men’s Champion for Triples! This will probably be a record that is hard to beat for many years to come. I can already see the headlines: “National Champion before PSLE”. Hahahah!

6) As the head of development squad, what’s your advice for up and coming bowlers?
The fist pump from Arman when we finally won our first match. The moment we huddled together jumping for joy when we won the tournament, although Bryan was SWEATING A LOT.
Bowls is really a mix of social and competitiveness. It doesn’t discriminate, so anyone can excel in it as long as you treat it seriously enough. Last but not least, Bowls calms me down from the daily grind. For the 120 minutes when I’m playing Bowls, everything else that keeps me awake at night will be blocked out. Therapeutic!
To be honest, we didn’t start off the tournament too well, losing to tough opponents of seasoned National Squad members (Anthony Loh, Bernard Foo and Thomas Leong) and to another very strong SCC team (Srini, Hui Kai, Harriman). However, the fact that even after the two losses our shots difference were merely -3 gave us hope that we could eventually persevere and qualify for the knockout stages. In fact, we were leading all the way through these couple of matches until the lapse of concentration caused us to lose the matches in the final stages. Therefore, the team was able to focus our efforts on where we needed to improve, as the cause of our defeats was easily identified. Hence, after the two losses, we never looked back but instead we tightened our defence (even when we are down on the head) to start winning the remainder of the matches comfortably. As we progressed, the youngsters’ confidence in the team grew and we collectively felt less intimated by our opponents. Having said that, the team’s expectations remained grounded, and we took every progression as a bonus.

Another key success factor for the team was that we understood one anothers’ imperfection, so at no point did any of the teammates get frustrated with one another. We were just laughing off our mistakes, and soon found mistakes to be far and in between. In fact, it was such a learning journey that Bryan and myself found ourselves focusing on coaching the mindset and “getting the weight and line” for Arman during game play itself. Arman is already demonstrating a perfect delivery stance thanks to the great coaches in SCC that guided him along the way. As overused as the phrase “sky’s the limit” is, it is thoroughly fitting to describe Arman.

SCC did it again! Under leadership of Captain and skip of the team – Edmund, young Bryan and 11-year-old Arman clinched the gold at the National Men’s Triple Captaintournament.Edmund
Always stay calm, no matter what situation you are in when bowling competitively. You certainly can’t be bowling well when your hands are trembling due to nerves. A related point is that you have to constantly believe in yourself and your teammates. In a team game, I’ve told many that success is derived from 80% teamwork, and 20% skills; this tournament win definitely proved that to a certain degree.

5) Advice for newcomers?
1) How did you persevere through the many rounds of the prelimi naries tournament, with two considerably new and young bowlers?
As I mentioned early, the game doesn’t discriminate. Treat it seriously enough, and it may soon be a part of your life and provide you satisfaction that you never imagined before. I’m actually still buzzing for Bryan and Arman now as I’m writing this.
Not since 2008 have we been able to say this: the Club 1st XI, the Lions, are the champions of Singapore. What a moment for the Club to celebrate and, as I write, a ‘victory lap’ festival is scheduled for one Sunday at Stumps. Indeed, as the name of our august institution suggests, cricket is central to our Club and it is only fitting that SCC is once again national champions. The road to victory has been rather a romp, with the Lions having won all seven of their games played so far this season. The final game on Sunday is against SRC Kings and captain Arit’s army are resolutely focused on ensuring a clean sweep. Whilst it has been a team effort, individual highlights have been Aditya Mallik registering 305 runs (the highest total in the league) at an average of 76, and Sachin Banamali and Anish Paraam topping the wickets table with 13 Butapiece.itiscricket, in the great majesty of the Padang, that has been the winner in 2022. Not only has the full league season made a comeback after a two-year hiatus, but we have launched a ladies team for the first time. That, rather than a national title for the men, will rightly be considered the greater milestone for Singapore cricket in 2022. Led by national captain Diviya GK, the ladies team held regular training session during the first half of the year, before making their debut on the Padang in a T15 game vs. CSC on 17 July. A goal of the Cricket Section Committee this season has been to get as many people as possible playing cricket this year. At the end of the year, the launch of the ladies team should be deemed the crowning glory of that quest.
Lastly, we must also toast the faithful veterans of our Saturday XI side. Week in, week out, they provide huge opportunity for senior cricket participation, tirelessly playing more games than any other SCC team and, equally tirelessly, ensuring they top the table of the Section’s F&B spend.

Across the wider Section, we have fielded six other SCC teams in the men’s league this season. In Division 1, the Tigers remain in charge of their own destiny despite a recent loss as they lead the title chase. The young Cougars squad are also still in the race too. In Division 2, the Cheetahs are riding a five game winning streak and are well in contention for the title. The Panthers and Jaguars have endured mixed seasons in Division 3, but both have had impressive wins in recent games. Our U21 Pumas side have had a fantastic start in Division 5 with just one lost across the first six matches. We’ve also had a regular dollop of Club XI fixtures, which continue to provide plenty of opportunity for those outside the league teams.

The next event that followed was the Inter-Club game with Changi Golf Club (CGC) on Saturday, 2 July 2022. The highlight of the day was when our Section Member Vikarna Chaudhri achieved a Holein-One at the 2nd hole. Our heartiest congratulations to Vikarna; well done indeed! We are coming into the final quarter of the year. We have planned more games and social events for the rest of the year. At the time of writing this article there will be a social game on 12 August 2022 at the Marina Bay Golf Club. Thereafter from 8 - 11 September we have the Interport game with the Royal Selangor Club and a game in Kluang. The response from our Members has been fantastic for both the social and Interport games.

The day began with the registration of golfers from 11am onwards and thereafter lunch was served. Players gathered for the photo session prior to the shotgun tee-off just after 1 pm. Upon conclusion of the Event, our players proceeded to SCC for the after-game dinner of fun, music and dance at The Padang Restaurant. Prizes for the AGC division winners and runners-up including the Overall Champion were presented at the dinner. Our congratulations to the winners of the respective categories. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank our generous sponsors for the Event. We in the Golf Section Committee are grateful to our Members for making the Event a momentous success. We will endeavour to continue the tradition and look forward to your continued support and participation.
The SCC Annual Golf Championship (“the Event”) was played on Friday, 24 June 2022 at the Sentosa Golf Club. We were blessed with a full turnout and excellent weather. Clearly the Gods were with us on that day! It was great to see the regular faces and many new faces taking part in the tournament and festivities before, during and after the game.
Finally, we are pleased to announce that the Golf Simulator is being installed in the Multi-Function Room (former Jackpot Room). It is expected to be up and running sometime in late September 2022. We highly encourage our Members to use the facility once it is up and running. We will keep you posted on all developments.

After a hiatus of two year, the all-new Mens Hockey League and Womens Hockey League returned. Although the league is an abridged one where teams only play a single round robin, the return to sport has been most welcome by all, albeit safely. Our Mens 1s were looking to win an unprecedented fourth national title on the trot. But an exodus of players during the last two years and a unfortunate wave of COVID-19 in our two crucial games put paid to our title defence and we finished third in the league with five teams. Since 2014 we have consistently without fail been on the podium and that is something we should take some consolation from and work on rebuilding our team and regaining our title in the 2023 season which promises to be a full one. Our Ladies 1s were also defending their national title but despite some talented recruitment, the absence of some key players meant they could not retain the title. Their narrow 1-0 loss to eventual champions Hockey Innovative proved to be the defining result. The ladies finished with a silver stretching their medal finish back from 2010 without fail. They too will rebuild and work on regaining their Meanwhiletitle. our Ladies 2 had to go through a massive overhaul as we lost 90% to graduation or relocation. The new-look team did well to finish fifth. We will work hard to strengthen this team to compete for a medal next season. Our Mens 2s did very well and one stage could have won the title but a narrow 2-1 loss to eventual champions Khalsa and a disappointing defeat to Barkerites meant we finished in fourth spot. But this is a vast improvement from our sixth place finish previously. The boys look to have turned a corner and next season they will be going for a medal in this tough league. Our Mens 3s are top of their pre-season 9-a-side Liga with the decider to play. They will play in MHL5 from September.
Finally, Our Ladies and our U15 Girls teams won the Pesta Sukan Hockey 5s, taking our title tally up to six for the year. Our Hockey SCChool finished with a Bronze in the Mixed U12s, as did our U15 Boys and U19 Girls. Our Masters finished with a Silver. The Pesta Sukan is the unofficial National Hockey 5s championships held in conjunction with National Day over two weekends prior to National Day.
