PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, Greetings to you and your family for what I wish will be a fantastic new year! Moving back to dining for groups of five pax this last month, the Clubhouse was once again buzzing at full capacity with every table in our F&B outlets occupied with Members, their families and guests. Sports activities and camps safely resumed and our festive events and activities for adults and kids, both the physically-held and virtual ones, were well attended. As we start the new year, do take note of the permanent closure of Fullerton Road and Anderson Bridge to vehicular access. Members will now need to drive to the Clubhouse via Parliament Place. For more information, please refer to page 5. We have been strategizing for the new year, and to help us ensure we meet our Members’ needs, we launched a Club Survey in November with question segments covering every aspect of our Club life – including sports, events and activities, F&B, facilities and other services. About when you receive this Padang magazine, you would still have a few days to submit the survey, if you haven’t already done so. Your feedback via the survey would help the General Committee and Club Management serve you better. As a little bonus for your efforts, 20 participants stand to win a $50 F&B voucher each in our Survey Lucky Draw. The survey link is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/J366B3B We have started evaluating the many proposals which Members had sent in for alternate uses of the former Jackpot Room. Suggestions range from a multi-function activity room, a golf simulator, library and reading room, business centre, member’s bar etc. We are carefully considering your ideas and will be sharing the final decision after further consultation with the Membership. In the meanwhile, Lunar New Year festive preparations have kicked off. Our F&B team have put together a delectable menu of takeaway options – including cookie goodies, various types of Chinese roast meats, and yusheng platters. You can also enjoy your reunion dinners with our Steamboat set menus and dine in with our Chinese ala carte specials.
Exactly a year ago, in my address to you in the 2021 Jan/Feb issue of our Club magazine, I talked about how we were seeking to develop more contact points to SCC for the wider segment of the Membership. Since then, the SCC Book Club has flourished, as well as other activities such as our SCC Running & Brisk Walking Club, Trail Walks, and Cycling Club. In that issue, I also raised the possibility of starting new interest groups such as Chess and I am happy to announce that since then, we have started the SCC Chess Interest Group which meets regularly most weeks. You can read more about it on page 30. Our community outreach and engagement activities are also continuing. In addition to our work with the Willing Heart soup kitchen, we got involved late last year with Project Blue WaVe movement’s regular activity to kayak along Marina Bay, pick up rubbish and clean the waters. Member participation was positive and we are continuing with this this year, so do join us. We have also, in partnership with ItsRainingRaincoats - an initiative that aims to improve the lives of migrant workers in Singapore, donated our under-utilised pool table to a dormitory located in Kaki Bukit. We hope the migrant workers will enjoy their much-deserved breaks and relax while playing pool. On behalf of the General Committee, I would like to thank all Members for their strong support and patronage of the Club and participation in everything we’ve organised this past year despite all the uncertainties and pandemic-related rules we have had to navigate together. We see a brighter year ahead as we shake off pandemic fatigue and look forward to stepping strongly into 2022 with you. I wish all Members and their families a Happy New Year and abundant good health, happiness and success.

Chateau Pontet Reynard, France (AOC Grave Blanc)
Brancaia – Toscana Bianco Sauvignon Blanc, Italy
This wine offers a bright silver colour with light golden highlights and a smooth and rich appearance. It reveals a powerful nose characterized by notes of citrus, white flowers. In the mouth, this wine is very rich and unctuous, keeping a hint of freshness with a long finish.
The fruit flavors of grapefruit and gooseberries pop out in the beginning and end on floral notes. The inhibition of malolactic fermentation gives the wine an enchanting freshness, while a five-month aging on lees for one third in barriques and two thirds in stainless steel tanks ensures an excellent structure.

$75.00 per bottle / $16.80 per glass
Chateau Pontet Reynard, France (St Emilion Grand Cru)
Brancaia – Toscana Maremma Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon, Italy
A dense purple colour along with a big, sweet nose of blackberries, coffee, forest floor and camphor. This is a seriously endowed, surprisingly full-bodied effort that is atypically rich and textured for the vintage.
This medium to full-bodied wine strikes with its beautiful blue fruit flavors and very smooth tannins, which are typical for the Tuscan coast. This wine is a fresh and elegant combination, which makes it easily accessible.

The Wine Circle continues its onwards journey with its monthly events. The Circle was able to successfully pivot to virtual events and has been consistently organising wine tastings each month.
OCTOBER’S “INSIGHT INTO THE WORLD OF CHINESE WINES For October, the Circle organized an event titled “Insight into the world of Chinese wines”. Only a few of us know that China is not just a big market for wines but also produces and exports wines of a high quality. The event featured some of the top wineries from some of the best wine-growing regions of China, namely Ningxia & Xinjiang. It was a maiden event on Chinese wines for SCC and it was well received. The speaker, Ms Purple Gao, gave a well-researched and informative talk on the Chinese wines. The surprise was the speaker from Grace Vinyard - one of the leading wineries featured in the virtual wine event.
NOVEMBER’S “FONTERRA VIRTUAL WINE & CHEESE TASTING For November, the Circle curated a unique event wherein they had Fonterra - one of the world’s prominent cheese companies - sponsoring the event. Fonterra organised a speaker who spoke of the pairing of different cheeses with different wines. It was indeed a unique twist to the conventional pairing of wine with cheese. As in the past, this event also had a full house with vibrant interactions between the speaker and the attendees. The icing on the cake was the value delivered to the members wherein each attendee was delivered five samples of wine, five slabs of cheese (750gm with two of them being very premium cheeses) and home delivery – all at a price of SGD 18. The actual cost of the event was over SGD 85 and offered at an 80% concession to the Wine Circle Members. As for all the events, the sponsors of the above events made an extremely attractive one-time offer to the attendees for any purchase of their products. The Circle also announced the offering of a Wine Circle logo embossed premium 100% cotton polo shirt complementary to all its Members. This is in addition to the lapel pin which had already been offered complimentary in September. The Circle continues its strong march and has already offered its Members a value which is several times their annual subscription, thus making joining the Section an easy decision.

Flame of Gratitude in My ‘Willing Heart’ SCC Community Outreach with Willing Hearts on Sunday, 31 October 2021 Written by: Siddh Narayan Sharma, (Grade 10, Canadian International School, Singapore) I recently got a chance to attend the SCC Community Outreach with Willing Hearts once again. Because we had been there previously, I already had a lay of the land and wasted no time diving right into the work. Over the course of the last year, my experiences working alongside the Singapore Cricket Club to complete community service and give back to the community have been plentiful, and I have found myself leaving each experience with new knowledge, new skills, and new relationships. SCC’s October trip to Willing Hearts, in particular, showed me a new side of the soup kitchen as I completed tasks all around the facility. We first started at the vegetable cutting station, but was soon called upon for some manual labour, and I, along with some of the other boys my age, were handpicked to help out with the heavy lifting. We helped move some heavy bins and also unloaded supplies for food production from the supply trucks. This was an added bonus to an already meaningful activity - a bonus workout! Two boxes of vegetables and 45 minutes later, a group of men approached the chopping area, began frantically pointing at every teenage boy in sight, and asked us to follow them into the foyer. In a state of initial confusion, I joined the other kids my age as we followed the men to an area, fully crowded with 6-foot tall garbage bins. The men then asked us to wheel the bins to the outside carpark, where they would be collected by garbage trucks later on. I leaped at the challenge, and helped pushed some heavy bins around until the last bin was wheeled onto the tarmac. This additional challenge made the experience all the more entertaining for me, as I explored an entirely new side of the facility, meeting new people along the way. Still buzzing with energy, I ran back to the peeling station for a rematch with the box of carrots, looking to maximize my productivity. Barely 10 minutes passed before a new duty called for a second time, and the group of teenagers assembled for an encore. Because the men did not provide us with any information about the task at-hand, this created a lot of suspense during our long walks from the vegetable chopping area to the carpark. Nothing could have prepared me for the job we were assigned to do during the second trip. A colossal pickup truck pulled into the carpark, absolutely loaded with Styrofoam containers. When I asked the driver what was in the back, to my absolute shock, he said live fish! Apparently, the soup kitchen places orders directly from Kranji fisheries to deliver live fish, maximising the freshness and quality of the food being prepared. Accompanied by the rest of my team, we got to work unloading the many boxes. After what seemed like hours of endless lifting, we were finally relieved of our duties, and went back to our respective stations. On my way back to the chopping station, I stumbled across an assembly of volunteers who seemed to be cooking giant pots of laksa. Eager to try something new, I went into the kitchen and was quickly briefed on how the assembly chain worked, and what my role in the system would be. After getting acquainted with my team and familiarising myself with the job at-hand, I got to work, unpacking boxes of seasoning and stirring laksa pots like a well-oiled machine. After completing dozens of tasks, and working with hundreds of volunteers, it brought a smile to my face to see that everyone was still unified through our collective goals despite being from different walks of life. I even got to meet Uncle Lawrence for the second time (he was just as crabby as ever!). This trip to Willing Hearts was a perpetual reminder that you can work hard to give back & enjoy yourself at the same time. I also gained some much-needed perspective, as my work in the kitchens and chopping stations gave me a small taste of a day in the life of a worker, jam-packed with tireless labour. I was especially glad to find out that the meals I prepared would feed migrant workers, the disabled, low-income families, and others in need of hot, healthy & fresh meals. I am lucky to have had this experience that helped broaden my perspectives. By taking time out of my day to work hard in the kitchen, I managed to ignite a flame of gratitude in my ‘willing heart’, as I used my own two hands to give back to society. I learnt that – at the end of the day, our deeds unite us more than our individual titles, as when it storms and rains, it falls on all of us the same. JAN / FEB 2022 THE PADANG

A Member’s Experience: SCC Community Outreach – Kayak & Clean On Sunday, 21 November 2021 Written by Todd Rosin As an environmentalist, avid scuba diver and surfer, I have seen first-hand the amount of plastic waste polluting our oceans and waterways. So when I saw the flyer for the SCC Kayak & Clean Community Outreach event, I was excited to do my part and thus signed up right away. I had participated in the SCC East Coast Beach Clean Up earlier this year and knew that this event would be well organized as well. When I got up, it was a bright sunny morning. I gathered my gear and headed to PAssion WaVe @ Marina Bay. When I arrived, Cassie Wong of SCC was there getting everything organized. This was the first time I had been to Passion WaVe and was impressed with the facility and all the sports equipment they had. There were altogether seven SCC Members that joined the 9am – 11am event that day. I met my kayak mate, Talib Dohadwala and we proceeded to organize our kayak, life vests and paddles. The staff of Passion WaVe were very efficient. They conducted the safety briefing, explained the kayaking regulations and showed us how to handle the kayaks. They provided us with buckets and tongs to collect the plastic and other waste. As we got set, Talib and I kayaked off in search for plastic and other waste in the bay. Admittedly, looking out over the bay from the shore, everything seemed very clean and so I wasn’t too optimistic about collecting a lot of trash. However, as we set out, we started to see some plastics bags floating in the water. A slew of plastic bags, masks, bottles, cans and lots of straws later, we continued on collecting more whilst being careful not to reach too far as we might tip over the kayak. We crossed over the grassy side of the bay and found even more trash. Some had been there a while and some looked like it was just discarded there. With our buckets full, we headed back to dock. The group collected a total of 7.2kg of trash, most of which was plastic – not too bad a haul as we did it by kayak. As we know, traditional plastics waste can stay in the bay for hundreds of years, breaking down into micro plastics that would eventually end up in our drinking water. It is our responsibility to clean up the bay now and not leave it for our children or grandchildren. Thank you, SCC, for organizing this socially and environmentally responsible event. Let’s keep Singapore green.

SCC Chess Interest Group Written by Brian Woon & Tristan Tan
“I watched the Queen’s Gambit and loved it! I would love to learn how to play!” We imagined how wonderful it would be if the Club had a Chess Section. We could meet and play regularly with other likeminded members, challenging and helping one another improve, studying and reviewing genius moves and subtle mistakes. Alas that dream is slightly closer to reality, with the start of the Chess Interest Group in September, meeting in the Gilmour Room every Wednesday evening for two-hour sessions.
When Netflix released its mini-series “The Queen’s Gambit” in October last year, it garnered sterling viewership numbers and was widely lauded for its screenplay, art direction, character development and riveting plot. On a social level, it led to an explosion of interest in chess, evident in the rapid rise in the sales of chess sets and books, as well as millions of new users registering on Chess.com, in the weeks and months to follow. For many who were uninitiated, the series suddenly made a centuries-old board game cool and popular (again). For others who had first encountered or fallen in love with the game in their youth, including the authors of this piece, it rekindled a fire to be a student of the game once more - not only to play more frequently, but to play better, smarter and faster, to learn or relearn the numerous moves and openings in the game, such as the eponymous title of the series (yes, there is also a King’s Gambit). Such is the beauty of chess. Everyone can play and excel at it, regardless of gender, race, social status, physique and most importantly, age. Few other games or sports can boast of a child being on an equal footing, and even trouncing an adult opponent, on such a regular basis. Nor do the powers diminish into the golden years; much evidence exists about the medical benefits of playing chess in keeping the mind alert and agile to combat dementia.
From the first session with less than 6 people, we’re now receiving 10 or more attendees each session. The group has a good mix of beginners and intermediate players, plus a couple of more advanced players including a wunderkind aged 10. It has been equally heartening to see the progress of our first timers who have been diligently coming back each week, eager to learn the basics and put them into practice through live games. Little did we know how much we enjoyed teaching the game and imparting our limited knowledge to them. We can’t wait for the time when they’ll be ready to learn how to castle or the meaning of en passant. We are openly hopeful and optimistic that interest continues to grow and the word spreads further afield, such that come 2022, the Club might welcome the game of chess as a new sports and games section. In the meantime, please feel free to join us - whether you just want to play a quick game, or if you’re completely new and wish to learn how to play, even if it’s just to gain better context when watching reruns of The Queen’s Gambit in the coming holiday season.
For us, it started with casual games in The Oval & Verandah where we would have dinner after tennis sessions. A classic oak chess set and pieces positioned in the middle of the table alongside our dishes and utensils, as we plotted and schemed, protected and created diversions, whilst guzzling down the best food and drinks. We often heard from onlookers: “What’s that you’re playing?” “I love chess but haven’t played it in ages!”
Chess Club will meet every 2 nd and 4 th Wednesday in January, 6pm to 8pm, at Gilmour Room.
Please contact us on WhatsApp for any enquiries or information about our sessions: Cassie - 9477 7228 / Bryan - 8739 2652 / Tristan - 9661 4992 30

Book Review: “Educated” by Author Tara Westover
M E M B E R E N GAG EMENT
Written by Claire Monk I know a book club doesn’t sound like a standard SCC sporting activity, but our group has the same amount of camaraderie as any of the SCC teams. The combination of cultures, personalities and variety of life experiences always leads to a lively and interesting discussion about the book we have been reading. There is never a wrong opinion or point of view, and often hearing someone explain their perspective leads to further discussion about topics related to the book. It has even been known to send us off on such a tangent that it lead to the next book being decided as we all want to know more. The last book the group read and discussed was “Educated” by Tara Westover. The book is a memoir of the author’s childhood as she grew up in a survivalist Mormon family in rural Idaho. Tara recounts the life of her family who lived off the grid and under the radar, as her father suffered from a paranoid fear of government interference. He refused to allow his children to attend school, have a birth certificate or receive medical attention. As you read through the book, she recalls how working for her father’s scrap metal business and her mother’s herbal remedies impacted on her and her siblings. She doesn’t hold back and has you living through the sibling support, fights and abuse of her childhood. Finally at the age of 17, she manages to pass herself off as homeschooled and gained a scholarship to college. If you think that is the end of the story, you are very much mistaken; the story continues as it twists and turns through her life as she fights for the education she has always wanted until she finally gains a PhD in history from Cambridge University in England. She then looks back at what this has cost her in the way of family but also what she has gained in pride in herself and the independence she has established. The group scored the book a firm 4.5 out of 5 and would highly recommend it to the other groups; it led to one of our best discussions. The next book which our group - which next meets on Tuesday, 11 January 2022 at 2pm – will discuss is “The Code Breaker“ by Walter Isaacson.

SCC Cycling Trip to Labrador Park On 16 October 2021 Written by Fathima Mohietheen – Chairlady, Member Engagement Subcommittee
We had a fantastic turnout from our fellow SCC cycling enthuasists for our trip to Labrador Park on 16 October 2021. We started cycling from the club at 7.30am. We had awesome weather after a thunderstorm the day before and I must say we have been very lucky on the weather front so far. The feeling when the breeze hits our face while cycling is just out of the world and we truly enjoyed every moment of it away from our daily busy lives; it gave us a little more time to appreciate and pay more attention to our surroundings. To Labrador Park from our Club, we mostly cycled on the road till we hit Keppel Bay before we connected to the PCN onto Labrador Park. We clocked around 30km and it was truly breathtaking. We took a short break at Labrador Park before we headed back to the Club for our breakfast. We looked after one another, ensuring everyone reached our destination back and forth safely. Cycling has garnered a lot of interest in the Club and our SCC Cycling Group has grown; the Member Engagement Subcommittee is glad we are able to organise activities for our SCC Members. We have a great varied demography of cyclists in the Club, including both the road and PCN bikers. A very special mention on behalf of SCC Member Engagement Committee, we want to thank both Wilfred Diepren and Bastian, who had been very kind and volunteering their time for our SCC Cycling Group: we have been extrememly fortunate to have SCC Member Wilfred, who is an avid road biker, and his friend Bastien taking time off to bring our SCC Members for these adventure rides. Wilfred had also kindly volunteered to design our SCC Cycling Jersey. Please do order them, and you may want to gift it as well. With every purchase of the jersey, a portion will be donated by us to a charity organisation. Do support us! Importantly, thank you very much to our SCC President Zoher Motiwalla and also to all our SCC cyclists who turn up for our cycling activities - they are the most caring and considerate cyclists who ensure everyone is safe and patiently wait for one another during our cycling trips. Thank you to Member Engagement Subcommittee and Cassie and her team who are always providing us with all the necessary administrative support. We have also had feedback from Members they feel more confident now cycling on the road!

SCC CRICKET ACADEMY
From our Director of Cricket, Scott McKechnie: It seems almost unfathomable that 18 months have passed, since the day our children flooded the Padang together with our new friends at Northamptonshire County Cricket Club in what was an absolute celebration of Cricket at the Club! That day remains so fresh in our minds. It feels, slowly but surely, that we’re now moving towards a day where such incredible memories can be presented once more & we thank you so sincerely for your patience and support through this almighty storm that we’ve all had to weather, together. Pleasingly, Junior Cricket at the Club is in excellent health. Participation numbers hold true and the financial health of the program has enabled us to navigate these stormy waters without any loss of resource or key personnel, for which we are so, so pleased. Our human resource in fact has grown through this phase with the integration of David Bennett who is now installed within a full-time administrative role to the program! And my word, are we lucky to have him. We are in the process of planning for a 2022 rich in opportunity, both home and abroad. I think we will all be more appreciative of just about everything that touches our lives in a post-COVID-19 era & we can’t wait to continue to use Cricket as a vehicle that enriches so many lives across our Junior, Senior, Community and Corporate Engagement programs. Warmest wishes towards a calm & wholesome holiday period ahead; we can’t wait to see you on our return in 2022! Better times are afoot.
From our Head of Junior Cricket Pathways, Anish Paraam: The last eight months have personally been very fulfilling. Cricket has always been my first love. To have the opportunity to be around it 24/7 and teach the sport to the younger generation has been a blessing. Also, it is a privilege to be able to call my office a playground. COVID-19 has indeed impacted the Junior Cricket Program. The restrictive and unpredictable phase has made it difficult for us to execute our set plans for the program. However, in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. This turbulent period gave our kids the opportunity to focus on their fundamentals. It also allowed our coaches to spend more personalised and quality time with the kids. On a personal level, my learning curve has been steep and I have been pushed far beyond my comfort zone on many occasions which has been instrumental in my growth. To counter the volatile nature of the ‘beast’, adopting an ‘Onward and Upward’ mentality is essential. Being versatile and adaptable has served the program well and we will continue to strive to remain so.

SCC TENNIS ACADEMY We have had an exciting year with many new faces from all the other Sections at the Club taking an interest in tennis, and it's been amazing to see everyone enjoy the sport so much. Our coaching team has been working around the clock to make sure the ice hockey slap shots turn into pinpoint topspin. We want to thank coach Michel Van De Sanden for his commitment, sometimes doing 5+ straight hours on the hard courts getting all of you ready for the next interclub Singles League at the start of 2022.

New Tennis Academy Coach - Agustin Velotti With the opening of Doubles for Adults and Kids Groups, we are thrilled to welcome Agustin Velotti and Amar Saletovic, who will be helping to guide the academy to new levels in 2022. A quick search of Agustin Velotti will reveal his career as a tennis professional that included winning the French Open Boys to representing Argentina in the South American games and winning a Silver Medal. Agustin also held a highest ranking of 160 in the world and played Grand Slam tennis. “I left home when I was 18 years old; I lived in a small town in the north of Arhentina and I went to live in Buenos Aires to form a better team,” Agustin started explaining when we asked him how and where he got started in tennis. “That year I won the Junior Roland Garros (French Open), the most important tournament of my career. I actually did not want to go to the tournament; I had arrived in a very bad moment of tennis and I was forced to play for my sponsors. I had been losing the previous tournaments in the first round, I felt that even the ball boys could beat me!” However, things took a turn for the better for him: “I took the pressure off of wanting to win the tournament and ended up playing a great tournament. That week I had many cabal; I played the entire tournament with the same shirt and shorts, and I felt that I was winning because of that, so every night I washed my clothes by hand and the next day I played with exactly the same clothes. I can say that I became champion the JuniorRoland Garros champion with only one shirt and one pair of shorts!” Agustin is currently the only player in Singapore with a ranking inside the top 500 on the ATP tour, and we look forward to his skills and experience inspiring the junior and senior team players at SCC.

NATIONAL 7-7-1 SINGLES The search for a representative at the World Bowls Indoor Championships in Bristol this coming April saw nine men and four ladies represent SCC at the recently concluded inaugural National 7-7-1 Singles. This new adopted format brings a whole new twist to the game, ensuring you have to be sharp right from the go, and gave underdogs a chance to upset the more seasoned competitors. Six out of the nine men progressed into the knockout stages, causing some major upsets along the way. Edmund won his group undefeated, taking Anthony Loh, the winner of the 2021 National Singles out in the process. Fellow finalist Thomas Leong needed a win against Christian to progress. After claiming the first set comfortably, a mid-match slump allowed Christian into the game, eventually surrendering the second set and the thrilling one end tiebreak to bow out of the tournament. Meanwhile, Melvin and Srini went through undefeated while Zoher and Alan progressed as well. After the round of 16, Zoher, Srini and Edmund survived their way into the quarterfinals. Edmund’s unbeaten run came to an end against Pang HH from ELBC, but Zoher claimed a semifinal berth with victory against LBAD’s Khirmen, while Srini delivered some last bowl magic to snatch a win against Bernard from an almost impossible position, leaving his opponent devastated. They both went on to win their semifinals to set up an all-SCC final. The Section was thrilled that this inaugural tournament is going to be won by an SCC Member and cheered both bowlers on. Zoher’s experience eventually saw him defeat Srini in straight sets to claim his first-ever National Singles title. All our ladies - Mary, Josephine, Anne Marie and Amira - qualified from their groups, with Jo and Anne Marie the only all-SCC match in the quarters . Mary, Anne Marie and Amira all won their games in straight sets to ensure there were three SCC bowlers in the semifinals. An exciting SCC semifinal saw Mary and Amira up against each other. Amira took the first set, but Mary came back strongly, leading 7-5 going into the last end of the second set. A stupendous last bowl by Amira overturned the set, awarding her a spot in the finals. In the other semi, Anne Marie was unable to regain her form from the previous day and dropped her match to May in straight sets. Even though Amira put up a strong fight, May was ultimately the better bowler in the final and deservedly won the title and her ticket to the World Indoor Championships with Zoher. Well done to all participants!

TEQBALL We are excited to announce, at the time of writing, that some of our players will be taking part in the inaugural Teqball Challenger Cup this December at OCBC Square. This competition is organized by the Teqball Association of Singapore and the winners of the tournament will be given a chance to represent Singapore in the international arena next year. The tournament is also a partnership with The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) as part of their fans engagement during the AFF Suzuki Cup (Southeast Asia’s premier football competition). Teqball is one of the fastest growing sport in the world ever since it was recognized by the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA). It is a sport that is played on a curved table, combining the elements of football and table tennis. The players are allowed to hit a football with any part of their body, except for their arms and hands. The game can be played between two players (singles) or four players (double). A Teqball match consists of best-of-three sets and each set is played until a player or team reaches 12 points. Also, a player is not allowed to touch the ball with the same body part and to return the ball with the same body part twice consecutively. Our Football Section is extremely excited for the event and we wish all our players the best. We are confident that you will make the Section proud!

COME HELL OR HIGH WATER, GOLFERS NEVER STOP PLAYING… NOT UNTIL THE LIGHTNING GOD STRIKES! 1 NOVEMBER 2021, CHANGI GOLF COURSE Game registration flew off the charts for the long-awaited Golf Section game at Changi. Nothing less than a full SCC turnout played the 18 holes with such pent-up energy that even our regular Changi host wild boars and monkeys decided to enjoy a nice afternoon nap and leave us to cut the grass with our clubs. We whacked and chased that dimpled golf ball doggedly through 18 holes of wet fairways, sand bunkers and a game-stopping short thunderstorm. Some knocked back a few cans of beer with homemade savoury bites when the course was temporarily closed (sic!) The SCC Golf Section camaraderie is legendary. And, yes, we observed strict safe distancing protocol while we enjoyed a light aftergame dinner and drinks under the stars. The balmy cool sea breeze wafting the beautiful sea front lawn of the Changi Golf Club set the perfect backdrop. Enough said. Enjoy the photos!!

2 DECEMBER 2021, ISLAND COURSE, SICC Again, registration was pleasantly over-subscribed. This truly warmed the cockles of the Golf Committee’s hearts. The weather teased golfers who teed-off on the early flights but then, the Weather God is an old golf kaki who has a soft spot for the SCC golfers. He knew that many of us were golf-starved for too long and since we paid quite a few dollars to play at SICC, he favoured SCC golfers with a light drizzle to cool our nerves and waves of fresh breeze to keep us calm, our putting hand steady and our head down. Indeed, we had all the ingredients for a truly enjoyable afternoon golf! Our loyal fan club of macaque groupies were on hand at several holes. They knew that we had to leave our buggies parked on track while we walked to our balls on the course. These kind groupie cousins nonchalantly helped themselves to our beer, snacks and small towels in our buggy. It was certainly quite a fun rare sight to see a band of near punch-drunk staggering monkeys crisscrossing the fairways. I am happy to report that no monkey was injured by a stray SCC golf ball. Dinner was a safe distanced quiet and copiously supported dinner affair at Kola Restaurant. The six-course meal was brilliant. Can you spot yourself in the photos? Cheers!

NEW BLOOD AND NEW POSITIONS FOR SOME IN HOCKEY SECTION COMMITTEE FOR NEW TERM The Hockey Section held its AGM on Saturday, 20 November 2021, at The Padang Restaurant. The matters of the AGM were carried out smoothly of course with the devoted assistance rendered by the Club’s staff from the Sports, Housekeeping and Banquet departments. At this juncture, it would be good to introduce every single member of the Section Committee as we move on from yet another year of no competitive hockey due to the stubborn COVID-19.
SUBHAS NATHAN - CONVENOR Let’s start with our convenor. The half centurion Subhas is a battled hardened financial services director. He starts his third term as convenor; the first two were dominated by COVID-19 restrictions. The father of three lovely kids is a career center-forward with a penchant for scoring the sneakiest goals. The Section is thankful that it will be well looked after under Subhas’ keen eye for goal.
MARTIJN DE BLAUWE – MEN’S CLUB CAPTAIN Martijn has been in our Section Committee in various roles. Serving more than 10 years, the Dutchman set a gold standard on minutetaking. Martijn briefly took over as Treasurer last term but has risen to the occasion to become our Men’s Club Captain. The Director of Global Quality Improvement hopes to hold the good name of this position like the stellar men before him. It is noteworthy that his four-year son is looking to strut his stuff on the Padang with the other Hockey SCChool kids in the near future – grooming him for this office one day.
JANICE TAN – LADIES’ CLUB CAPTAIN Janice has been a mainstay in the Ladies 1s and I believe this would be her fourth term as Ladies’ Club Captain. Largely quiet off the pitch, the former Singapore international is a Lioness and a half on it. The utility player filling positions that is asked of her. She does a similar role with the Hockey Section. An independent computer engineer, Janice is very dedicated to her hockey. Managing her unpredictable work assignments can be challenging but Janice rather be playing hockey than coding anytime.
JOSHUA CHAN – SECRETARY Joining the Section as a Junior Sports Member more than a decade ago, Joshua has grown up with the Section and after stints of being co-opted into the committee, the advertising professional has stepped up now to become the Section Committee’s Secretary. The utility hockey player, Joshua has been versatile in his roles in the committee by taking on social media and communications roles within the Section previously. We look forward to creative minutes from him in the near future.

NICHOLAS WARNER - TREASURER The career numbers man has finally done the sums to land the Treasurer role at our beloved Hockey Section. Nick has been at the heart of the SCC Men’s 1st XI defence since joining the club some six years ago. Possessing a rare quality of deriving great amount of joy defending rather than scoring, the Club has appreciated his presence. Our funds are certainly going to be well looked after by this father of a beautiful girl.
PAUL TOPFER – MEN’S SOCIAL SECRETARY Paul has been a livewire since joining our Club in 2019. Bringing with him loads of experience, the Australian technology, energy and utilities executive also packs a punch and a half on the humour front. The witty goal scorer extraordinaire is a perfect fit for the Social Secretary role. He thoroughly enjoys a laugh, some bites and a drink (even if it’s Heineken Zero) but not more so than sharing the same with fine company such as the people of the Hockey Section.
ABIGAIL RHODES – LADIES’ SOCIAL SECREATRY The talented Abi has brought a lot of colour and design to the Section. The English graphic designer designed our latest kit and probably will have a hand in the new one too. The highly sociable goal scoring left half is always in the right place to make a party come alive; who better to deliver many memorable socials (when we can have them) for our adoring Section Members.
JEREMIAH THONG – JSM REP One of the factors in our Section’s prowess on the hockey pitch has been our youth development. Managing the highly busy lifestyles of the younger Members is tricky and complex. Our Section Committee have always dedicated a person to look after these valuable Members and Jere has done this amicably well over the last two season. Jere also is the official assistant coach of our teams and he has built many strong bonds with our juniors, ensuring that many of them have converted into Ordinary Members when the time came. Another one of our Men’s 1st XI defence stalwarts, the 30+ year old enjoys coaching a little more than playing these days.
BALA CHANDRAN | PHILIPP FARENHOLTZ | JULIAN MICHAEL | NATSUKO YOSHIKI – COMMITTEE MEMBERS Bala stood down from his secretary position as he wanted to pave the way for new blood to take over. His timely council is always appreciated as his goalkeeping skills when needed. Bala, who is a lawyer, is also an avid football fan that enjoys a kick around on the Padang and seeing Spurs do well in the Premier League. However, he sleeps better knowing that our SCC hockey teams always have a better chance of success in the top flight than the Hotspurs. Philipp is new to the committee and has been very involved in the Section’s activities. From attending all the AGMs since he has joined and many of the training sessions, the international investment professional has weathered the pandemic storm better than most because of the hockey he could play at the immaculate Padang. The German will assist the Section with fund raising for events and attracting new Members to the Section. Julian has been on the committee a number of years and he has contributed in many areas of the Section’s work. The young lawyer will be looking after social media presence and assisting the Secretary and Social Secretaries in their work. Equipped with a razor sharp wit, Julian has committed to delivering a class act on the hockey pitch in the near future. Natsuko is amongst our quietest Section Members, but the seasoned banking professional is loudest on the hockey pitch. A very busy woman but she always makes the time to come to training and has been helping on the social front and will continue to do so. The charming Japanese utility player has been asked to fill many positions on the pitch and she does it with her unmistakable smile each and every time (seen before COVID-19 times)
INTEKHAB KHAN – PAST CONVENOR (CO-OPTED) Ever since becoming the convenor five years ago, Inte has thoroughly enjoyed his ride in the Hockey Section. Leaving behind his hockeyplaying days the lawyer has gotten his hand dirty on the administration front. He agreed to be co-opted to assist the Section in delivering meaningful experiences for all our Members. Despite enjoying playing football more these days, Inte always keeps an eye on the hockey and played a telling part in bringing The Hockey SCChool to fruition.

WORLD SQUASH DAY On 9 October 2021, the SCC Squash Section celebrated as best we could with the number of players per court being limited to two at each time. Not to be deterred, we decided to hold a backhand backwall drive challenge, popularized by World No. 9 Joel Makin. The rules of the challenge were simple. The challenger has one minute to hit as many consecutive backhand drives as possible, and each backhand drive has to come off the backwall. The competition was fierce and our two joint first winners, Chua Man Tong and James Nicholas, both completed 35 drives in one minute, equaling Joel Makin’s score. Besides the challenge, the Singapore Squash Rackets Association also delivered a physical “Instagram frame” to the SCC courts specially to celebrate World Squash Day. This frame was delivered to other squash court venues in Singapore as well. Even though squash players could not gather in large groups to celebrate World Squash Day, players expressed their solidarity through the simple action of posing for photos within the frame.
WE EVEN HAVE MERCH NOW As if there weren’t already a zillion reasons to be part of the SCC Squash Section… We now have merch, which is exclusively for all Squash Section Members (excluding JSMs), and at no cost. The drawstring bags and towels have been distributed to Squash Section Members at social nights and during Saturday socials. Squash Section Members who have not collected their drawstring bag and towel can check how to do so through the usual Squash Section communication channels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 June 2021 An eloquent and entertaining account of a memorable childhood in Singapore during the waning years of British colonial rule. The author writes with wit and style about the remarkable history and daily lives of her distinguished family and their characterful cast of household staff. Her writing is imbued with a generous seasoning of the lively vocabulary and expressions of Singaporean English - Singlish. She paints authentic and atmospheric word pictures, accompanied by evocative illustrations, of aspects of Singapore that have all but disappeared from the modern metropolis of today. D. G. Williams
